My September & October Reads
Festival Days, Jo Ann Beard - An essay-writing god who cares about dogs just as much, possibly more, than I do. Incredible.
The Mutual Friend, Carter Bays - A coworker convinced me to put this on hold by describing it as "like reading a TV show." Specifically, it feels like reading How I Met Your Mother, which makes sense because Carter Bays created that show. I didn't want to stop once I started, and I've recommended it to all of my book friends. Twists! Turns! Lovable characters! New York City!
Nora Goes Off Script, Annabel Monaghan - Ideal for a Friday night when you're stuck at home with a cold. It's fun and funny but there are actual stakes, I loved the protagonist (a relatable queen!), and I was rooting for the relationship the whole time. I flew through it in one sitting, if you don't count the 20 times I walked across the room to grab cough drops or make more hot tea.
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, Gabrielle Zevin - This is my third Gabrielle Zevin book and what I want to know is: how does she do it?! Each book is wildly different from the last, but they're all extremely well-written page-turners. Tomorrow is my favorite so far because I knew it would be a perfect novel to recommend to my older brother, which I rarely get to do.
Exteriors, Annie Ernaux - This year's Nobel Prize was announced as I was walking in to work, and since I work at a library, I grabbed the first book of hers that I could find before heading to my desk. I had never read Ernaux, but based on her fans' ecstatic tweets, she is mainly a memoirist who writes about sadness and extramarital affairs—okay, I'm interested! This one turned out to be a slim book of diary entries written when she moved to a neighborhood outside of Paris; short observations from the grocery store, the dentist's waiting room, the train.
Flight, Lynn Steger Strong - If you're in the mood for a heartwarming holiday story, this ain't it. But! If you love: Christmas, your unfortunately faraway siblings, the Jodie Foster/Holly Hunter film Home for the Holidays, and being sad, then this very much IS it.

“I think we should brace ourselves in case something bad has happened,” I say to Mary. She nods. “Just in case. It won’t hurt to be braced.” I realize that I don’t know what “braced” means. You hear it all the time but that doesn’t mean it makes sense. Whiskey is supposed to be bracing but what it is is awful. I want either tea or beer, no whiskey. Mary nods again and heads into the kitchen.
Within an hour there are seven women in the dim living room, sitting. Switching back and forth between CNN and the local news reports. There is something terrifying about the quality of the light and the way voices are echoing in the room. The phone never stops ringing, ever since the story hit the national news.

his character sucks, his design sucks, his voice sucks everything about him sucks. I don't get why people like him, he's a selfish bitch who cares for himself. Randomly beefing with people for no reason, Brick tried to be nice to him multiple times on the show but he didn't give a shit and still tried to hurt him. Then when we get the merge he's basically treating lightning and Cameron like shit.
In episode 1 he was already beefing with people the second he appeared om screen. Scott wad just minding his own business then all of a sudden jo of course had something to say "stay of my way If you value your kiwis🤓" girl wtf are you talking about, scott didn't do anything to you. After chris McLean crahes the boat he's basically drowning people so he could get 1st place. Then when he arrives 1st he keeps bringing up he's a girl like who give a fuck. Yes we can all see your an girl.
Episode 2 and he's still a bitch. I wish he got voted off instead of staci. At the start of episode 2 him and brick was both running then suddenly they both crash into each othim 😱😱 and then yet again jo starts beefing and being a bitch in general for no reason like stfu for once your so annoying and then in the trivia game he's basically forcing Cameron and brick to embarrass themselves and even before the challenge he was being rude to Cameron saying he had a giant head while him chin is just as large.
Yet again in Episode 3 he was still annoying, at the start of the episode he basically racing with brick for the 29292 time and then he nearly chocked him and then omg 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 jo is actually nice to someone he actually "compliments" svetlana and then for the rest of the episode he's breaks bricks arm and is being annoying to anne maria. Istg If I was anne maria I would've beaten the shit of him.
Don't even get me started on episode 4 omg, in this episode he was just being a selfish annoying jerk. The whole episode he was bullying brick for passing his pants acting like he don't work out naked. Anne maria and Mike had the right to insult his attitude. he needs to get his attitude problem fixed istg. The more I talk about him in this episode the more my blood boils so let's just get to episode 5.
Episode 5 this bitch starts complaining about how no one can do shit on their tteam like oh my god shut the fuck up no one made you team leader. anne maria shouldve let that bitch fucking drown. if i were him i wouldve cheered zoey on for stepping on the air hose because then it wouldve gotten rid of the worst contestant of all time. then jo almost kills cameron like how much of a stupid fucking bitch can you be??????? no wonder no one likes you oh my god you asshole. and after brick basically took a bomb for the team all he has for him is a "nice job kid!" and a thumbs up????? what the fuck??????? hes a heartless asshole. can we also talk about how fucked up him back is????? why does he look like that??? girl looks like a humpback whale. fucking big ass feet as well. he needs to join the rates. no wonder lightning thought you were a man look at you. big ass chin.
then in episode 6 the only thing they do with him is talk about how hairy and ugly that bitch is. "ill pass on the frilly girly hair care thank you" WE GET IT YOURE NOT LIKE OThim GIRLS. CAN YOU SHUT UP YOU ANNOYING ASSHOLE. i wish anne marias hairspray killed him on the spot. no wonder anne maria and zoey looked so disgusting at jo shaving whatever he was doing in that scene because id be disgusting at that ugly ass bitch too. then the only othim thing he does is say hes hairy like ugh we get it nobody asked. girls out hime acting embarrassed like "Omg silly me did everyone hear me mention my pit hair? xoxoxoxoxo ahahaha i hope no one heard that" fucker has a beard. and normally i wouldnt care if girls have body hair but this bitch dont need to be acting like this and getting all embarrassed that someone heard him mention him beard. then chester fucks up him makeup lmaoooooooooo good on him. everyone shouldve laugehd at him harder, if anything that ugly ass makeup made him look even better. then he cruhes bricks hand like "welcome to my team" who tf r uu go away ur knew.
Then in episode 7 he has to mention he works out naked like um????? weirdo???? fym "finally work out like the ancient olympians" like ew thats actually disgusting. have you been WAITING to do this? kys. then he makes that dumb alliance with lightning for some reason although brick is a giant simp and will do whatever he says and it wouldve been a better strategy to keep him around because he constantly rides him dick. hes so fucking stupid for that move. then he has him whole "and ive never kissed a guy" moment ugh shut the fuck up youre not a gay twink. "ermm im not a dude!!!!!" WE KNOWWW hes the reason i hope gay marriage gets criminalized in every country in north america. then hes all like "brickkkkk abandon ur code for me!!!!!" like you just wanted zoey mike and cam to die?????? hes actuallly so fucking twisted. how awful of a person can you be. then he voted out brick even tho he didnt even vote for him so if he voted out lightning he couldve kept him around and manioulated brick. but he voted brick anyway. you know why? because jo sucks.
Episode 8 he doesnt even do jackshit he just wakes lightning up from his sleep and starts yelling at him with those corny ass nicknames like please shut your face no one ever wants to hear you talk you sue sylvester wannabe. since sues a republican i bet joes a republican too. fucking trump voter. i cant even remember what he does this episode becauses hes so useles?????? and then he beats lightning with a metal sign for no reason. like girl thats your only ally why dont you kill yourself while youre at it. god i hate republicans.
Then in episode 9 he pushes lightning into a shark like stoppppppppp thats ur ally you dumb fuck. whyd you just abandon him while everyone else hates you. lmao. i really wish scott eliminated joe that episode because then he wouldt have made it to the final 4 but nooooo scotts also stupid. s4 wouldve been SOOOO much better if joe wasnt in it. then she wants to be spoiled and pampered by lightning like stop itttt
Finally she gets eliminated in 10 but the entire time shes like "why is lightning mad at me?? i only pushed him into a shark ahahaha teehehheeh im so sillyyy" please sotp it you look liek you have xy chromsomes!!!! thens he bullies cameron for no reason??? and acts like a 90s school bully like ahahahah do my homework for me NERD!!!!!!!!!!!!! you dipshit i hope you kill yourself lmao look at meeeee. then she acts all surprised when everyone votes her off loolllll love it when he gets his karma. no wonder lightning misgendered you when you have a full beard that you cant shave off jackass
Even in the finale he cant shut up "im not rooting for cam or lightning ://// look at me guys im so different ahahhaha im one of the boys lmao!!!! im not like other girls!!! XDDDDD" nobody asked. :/
anyway jo dick riders dont come after me its just my opinion and im correct xoxo. dont come at me with all bis issues r just internalized misogyny !!!!!! bc i dont care i hope he joins the rates!!!!glad he didnt make it far in AS bc if he did i think i wouldve shot somebody lollll okay goodnight

end of year reading 2023
classics:
norwegian wood by murakami (i was on vacation, my phone was dying and i only had this book)
secret garden by burnett (our library copy has a missing page so i had to go to gutenburg.org to finish)
daddy-long-legs by webster (only to cross off the “letters” category in my reading bingo; i also considered this “(not so) dark academia”)
manga:
usotoki rhetoric by ritsu miyako (period mystery; couldn’t get enough)
daddy, the beard gorilla and i by koike sadaji (bittersweet slice of life about a widower and his kid moving in with his younger brother)
series:
elemental logic by laurie j. marks (hurts so good; some ugly crying but could not get enough of it and i love the glyphs)
haley and nana stories by maggie hogarth (cozy and cute litrpg with calligraphy but found myself arguing against the religious views)
fave library discoveries:
linnea at monet’s garden by bjork and anderson (children’s book with gorgeous illustrations; counted this and sequels as my “cottagecore” reads)
a month in siena by hisham matar (wonderfully written about art and author’s grief for his father)
chord by rick barot (amazing poetry by filipino-american queer author; enjoyed it more than his galleon book)
other people’s recs:
one long river of song by brian doyle (savoured the heck out of this essay/poetry collection; reccd by austin kleon)
kamogawa food detectives by hisashi kashiwai (loved the japanese drama so I didn’t need the rec; saw it on ig and immediately got a copy)
at the amberleaf fair by phyllis ann karr (jo walton rec; i discovered a lot of older sff via walton’s blog at tor)
new release:
salvage right by lee and miller (i am obsessed with the liaden books)
other memorable reads: t. kingfisher’s minor mage and wizard’s defensive guide to baking and dorothy gilman’s clairvoyant countess picked up on sale at work.
I enjoyed the reading bingo so much I made another one for next year with old & new categories and added a 3x3 mini movie bingo as well.
I read about 126 this year aiming for at least one more, but next year, I’m lowering my goal to 75 to ease the pressure.

June Rodil : Master Sommelier from Jo Ann Santangelo on Vimeo.
June Rodil was born in the Philippines and raised in Texas, June joined Houston-based, freshly formed Goodnight Hospitality as a partner in 2019 and opened two new concepts the same year: Montrose Cheese & Wine and Rosie Cannonball, a 2020 James Beard Award semifinalist for Outstanding Wine Program.
Previously, June was VP of Operations for McGuire Moorman Hospitality, based in Austin, TX, and headed operations for 11 concepts. She remains a partner in June’s All Day, her namesake restaurant that was named one of Food & Wine magazine's Restaurants of the Year in 2017, I was AGM at June's during this time. June is one of 29 women in the Americas to earn the Master Sommelier credential.
To me, June will always be a mentor. Very early in my role as General Manager of June's All Day, June and I were sitting in our then-shared office space when the silence was broken by a very stern June "June's P&L is horrible, fix this shit" and then she started rattling off categories that were out of wack. Honestly, I had heard about P &L's, sat through many weekly manager meetings with the MMH executives, and listened to these numbers but I was never personally responsible for them. Now here I was in charge and asked to fix it. I told June, sure show me, walk me through the P&L, and she did that day and regularly whenever I needed. Always available to me, and willing to share her knowledge.

Famous Five Art Nostalgia #09
Introductory post
Five Fall into Adventure – Le Club des Cinq et les gitans / Le Club des Cinq pris au piège
Original publication date: 1950 (UK), 1960 (France)
Tumblr media
(Original cover art by Jeanne Hives, 1960)
This book was re-titled in newer editions for similar reasons to the fifth volume in the series: like “saltimbanques” (fair-folk), the word “gitans” (gypsies) was originally simply used to designate a certain group of people, but it has come to hold some derogatory and xenophobic connotations over time. The title was thus changed to “Le Club des Cinq pris au piège” (Famous Five Caught in a Trap).
~~~~~~
Plot summary (adapted from Wikipedia):
The Famous Five meet up at Kirrin Station and learn Aunt Fanny and Uncle Quentin will be holidaying in Spain, leaving the Five at home with the household's cook, Joanna [Maria]. On the beach, the Five meet a gypsy girl, the "ragamuffin", called Jo [Jo].
Tumblr media
(Jo making a pest of herself and bombarding the Five with cherry pits)
Jo and George almost get into fight and Dick, who intervenes, gets a punch from Jo and retaliates in kind. The others find Jo and George very much alike. After finding out that Jo is a girl, Dick is very sorry, which moves Jo who is not used to kindness. After this Jo is devoted to Dick, but Jo and George keep disliking each other.
Tumblr media
(Dick’s charm at work!)
After the house is burgled, George is kidnapped, and Jo comes with a card requesting some documents to exchange for George. The wrong papers are provided, so George is not released. Jo is helping the villains, but decides to change sides, mostly because she wants to please Dick, and tells that George is likely hidden in Raven's forest [la forêt de Courcy] by the villains, among them her father Simmy [Antonio].
Tumblr media
(Jo enjoying Joanna’s delicious breakfast)
The children find Simmy's caravan, but no George or Timmy in it. Instead, they found George's writing on the wall of the caravan which says "Red Tower" [Mesnil-le-Rouge] over and over again.
Tumblr media
(Julian, Dick and Anne get lost in the forest and caught in a storm, resulting in a very uncomfortable night)
Jo knows that Red Tower is a man, a dangerous fellow who lives in a castle-like house on a cliff-top. Jo eventually leads Julian and Dick to the cliff-top house, where George is captive in a tower. Anne is left home with Joanna. At the foot of the cliff, the children find an underground tunnel which leads to the house. In the tunnel they meet Red Tower, a giant of a man with a flaming-red beard and madman's eyes.
Tumblr media
(The ferocious Red Tower is thoroughly pissed at his impertinent henchmen Simmy and Jake [Antonio and Manolo] for daring to request further payment for their shady work)
Red captures Dick and Julian, but not Jo who escapes. Jo frees the boys from captivity and climbs up some ivy and swaps places with George. Jo later locks up three of the kidnappers, including her own father. Timmy is doped, but wakes up just in time to protect them from the villains. She and Julian, George, Dick and Timmy manage to make a getaway by boat. The police are alerted. Three of the criminals attempt to escape but their helicopter crashes. Jo is admired by everyone, even by George, who first hated her. Joanna says that her cousin would like to look after Jo, as Jo's father will be sent to prison.
Bonus:
Tumblr media
(Dick, you shameless flirt 😏)
(Disclaimer: This is not an exhaustive list; sometimes the dates are difficult to pinpoint; and I have purposefully not included editions that re-used similar cover art, with differences only in layout and font style.)
Tumblr media
(Original cover by Jeanne Hives, Hachette, 1960 – that’s a nice scene. I can’t remember if it is ever mentioned that Jo plays music, but I happily embrace this headcanon!)
Tumblr media
(Jean Sidobre chooses to focus on an action scene from the end of the book – Hachette, 1973)
Tumblr media
(Jean Sidobre again with some snooping in the forest – Vermeille collection, 1975. Er, what is George doing here? Isn't she currently kidnapped? 🤔)
Tumblr media
(A similar setting from J.P. Morvan for France Loisirs, 1978… and the same question about George’s presence in the scene 🙄)
Tumblr media
(Umberto Nonna opts for some dramatic seafaring action – Edito Service, 1982)
Tumblr media
(Yves Beaujard also illustrates the escape scene – and this time it is Anne's turn to be where she isn't supposed to be! Hachette, 1989)
Tumblr media
(Stuntwoman Jo in action! Julian, Dick and Timmy are suitably impressed. 😯 Paul Gillon, Hachette, 1993)
Tumblr media
(A tense meeting on the beach! I like the kids’ outfits, particularly George and Anne’s overalls. Munch and Prunier, Hachette, 2000)
Tumblr media
(Fun times at the gypsy camp - Unknown illustrator, Hachette, c. 2000)
Tumblr media
(For once I quite like this cover by Frédéric Rébéna. It gives a feeling of mystery and tension, and George is suitably absent from the scene – Hachette, 2006)
Tumblr media
(Auren also takes us on a trek in the forest – Hachette, 2019)
a tragedy that jo ann beard’s “forth state of matter” short essay/story isn’t like. a household name. what a deeply sad and lonely and loving and heartbroken work. major warnings for gun violence and discussions of pet death but like. i would recommend this to anyone in the headspace for reading it
📚, 📋 for writers asks
Thank you for the ask!
📚 What are some books that have influenced your style?
The book that's probably influenced my style the most is The Thief Lord, by Cornelia Funke. The character development plus the dynamic setting plus the way the mystery was woven into the plot so neatly (and the way the ending was hopeful but realistic at the same time) really stuck with me. I've also been really influenced by nonfiction, both short and longer-form -- Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand and The Boys In The Boat by Daniel James Brown are both excellent examples of taking details from a person's life and using them to set up a story arc, and I'll throw All The Frequent Troubles Of Our Days by Rebecca Donner into the mix although I've only read it once. For short nonfiction, "The Fourth State of Matter" by Jo Ann Beard and "A Sea Story" by William Langewiesche have been really influential on me. I've read both of those multiple times.
📋 Do you consider yourself organized?
I'd say I'm not unorganized. I name my files in a pretty structured way and keep my folders organized, and I keep planning notes in the same spot every time + I have rules for what's allowed to go into the planning note versus what I have to save for the actual writing. But as far as keeping my WIPs organized, nope. It's a mess in there/up here.
"The house is empty and dim, full of dogs and cigarette butts. The collie has peed again. The television is flickering “Special Report” across the screen and I turn it off before the pictures appear. I bring blankets up, fresh and warm from the dryer.
After all the commotion the living room feels cavernous and dead. A branch scrapes against the house, and for a brief instant I feel a surge of hope. They might have come back. And I stand at the foot of the stairs staring up into the darkness, listening for the sounds of their little squirrel feet. Silence. No matter how much you miss them. They never come back once they’re gone." - Jo Ann Beard
