DRAMA REVIEW | Not Others (2023)

This drama was a pleasant surprise. It's not that common to see a kdrama that has as leads a single mother and her grown daughter, mostly because of the stigma this kind of family stills carries in South Korea.

Thankfully, Not Others manages to not make it all about the stigma of teen pregnancy or single motherhood, it finds a good balance between every day life events, criminal investigation and rom-com. Particularly because Mom and Daughter are so unbothered by it that they carry on with a "it sounds like a you problem" when someone points out they are, within their society, wildly unconventional.

At the heart of it, there's a story of two women making their way in the world through hardships, love and growing pains. About how it's possible to choose your family and make that unit be whatever you want, not what it's expected.

My favourite part of this drama was the performances. Jeon Hye Jin and Soo-young shine as the outspoken Mother-Daughter duo. Their characters are kind, smart and brave about their life choices. They have great chemistry with each other and make you feel everything.

The rest of the cast delivers solid support. Kim Hye Eun plays the rich, cool aunt and she's a hoot in every scene she's in. Park Sung-hoon in a great counterpart for Soo-young and Ahn Jae Wook delivers as the lovable fool supporting whatever his ladies wish for.

There's also a murder mystery surrounding the central story that manages to keep it all very centered and makes all the characters interact with each other making their world better developed.

Don't miss out on this found family! Their affection it's the real deal.

Cien años han pasado, el templo continúa destruido: la madera erosionada por el pasar de las estaciones, el oro y las finas telas arruinadas, velas e inciensos quemados hace mucho tiempo atrás. La luz se filtra entre las grietas y el polvo danza. El templo ha escuchado por un siglo los gritos que ahora permanecen como ecos guardados entre los muros. El espesor de la sangre y el resentimiento han mantenido alejado a cualquier forma de vida.

–¿Valió la pena? –Pregunta una voz masculina, sin más ira para dar, solo cansancio y vacío. Una duda genuina–. ¿Obtuviste lo que querías?

–Lo que te hice no se trataba sobre el poder, se trataba de sobrevivir. No me dejaste otra opción –la segunda voz responde suavemente, casi en un susurro, sonando tan cansado como la primera voz–. Yo no quería hacerlo.

Jin GuangYao se levanta. Aunque su cuerpo está roto, sus movimientos son graciles, su largo cabello fluye con el viento en una ligereza casi antinatural. Sangre que podría ser suya o no se adhiere a su piel.

Nie MingJue fija su mirada en los suaves movimiento del hombre más pequeño, emociones conflictivas arremolinándose en sus ojos.

El ex líder de la secta Nie se levanta también, como una fuerza de la naturaleza. El piso debajo de él podría partirse en cualquier momento con su poder. Hay un crujido siguiendo sus movimientos, pero son solo sus huesos una vez fragmentados. Hilos se entretejen por todo su cuerpo manteniendo unidas sus extremidades.

–Tú tampoco me dejaste opción, Meng Yao. Te dirigías hacia un terrible camino.

–Con todo respeto, no era de tu incumbencia, Da-ge. No tenías derecho a intentar asesinarme. Era una guerra, hice lo que creí mejor, pero ahora me doy cuenta de que quizá debí dejarte morir, ambos estaríamos en paz entonces, habrías tenido una muerte digna de un guerrero, y yo no hubiese vivido tanto tiempo aterrado de ti. En ese entonces solo intentaba salvarme –una pausa para respirar profundamente, casi parece que no dirá más, hasta que continúa en un débil susurro–, y, erróneamente, traté de salvarte también. Sé que no crees que mi vida valiera algo, pero, más allá del poder, sobrevivir es todo lo que siempre he buscado. Puedes culparme todo lo que quieras, pero no me arrepiento –Los ojos de Meng Yao se llenan de lágrimas, pero se niega a llorar más–. ¿Qué se supone que hiciera? ¿Dejar a todos humillarme y lastimarme una y otra vez? ¿Dejarte asesinarme? ¿Por qué matar te vuelve justo a ti y un monstruo a mí?

–Lo lamento, Meng Yao –interrumpe Nie MingJue, una de sus grandes manos colocada con cuidado en el hombro de Meng Yao. Es el toque más tierno que han tenido entre ellos incluso antes de sus muertes.

–¿Disculpa? –Jin GuangYao no puede creer lo que escucha. Su respiración, más una costumbre que una necesidad real, se detiene. Siente la mano en su hombro apretarse, como intentando que no huya, pero por primera vez, no lo lastima.

–Tienes razón, debí hablar contigo, realmente escucharte por una vez. Pero estaba enojado, me engañaste una y otra vez, Meng Yao. Fuiste hasta el punto de apuñalarte a ti mismo, ¿Cómo podría creer una sola palabra de ti?

–Estaba asustado. Tu juicio o el de mi padre, ambos me importaban, y ambos acabarían conmigo.

Los dos hombres permanecen en silencio, solo mirándose entre ellos por varios minutos, imágenes de cada momento juntos reviviendo en sus mentes aleatoriamente. Nie MingJue finalmente deja caer su mano, y da un paso atrás.

–Antes de mis últimos momentos, te escuché hablando con XiChen sobre mí, en ese entonces pensé que mentías, dime, no más engaños, ¿Realmente me temes, Meng Yao?

–Ya no. Estuve aterrorizado por ti durante mucho tiempo, pero cuando me tomaste del cuello antes de arrebatarme la vida y arrastrarme aquí, ya no te temía más. Solo había odio y resentimiento. El miedo se había ido.

–¿Aún hay solo odio? –Pregunta Nie MingJue, su mirada se posa intensa en el rostro frente a él, pero no hay juicio en su voz o su expresión. Parece incluso arrepentido.

–No. Ya no hay odio ni temor. Solo... Estoy cansado, Da-ge.

Le toma un momento a ambos asimilar las palabras de Jin GuangYao. Ninguno está seguro de qué significan, pero ambos saben que no son más mentiras.

–Yo también, Meng Yao.

La frase igualmente sincera. Es lo más cerca que ambos han estado de la paz.

–No puedo arrepentirme de haber intentado sobrevivir, Da-ge, pero te aseguro, lamento nuestro final, nunca fue mi deseo que ambos termináramos así.

Nie MingJue se gira mientras Jin GuangYao habla y vuelve a sentarse. Da unas palmadas al lugar a su lado antes de hablar él mismo:

–Acompañame, Meng Yao. Creo que tenemos mucho de que hablar aún.

Jin GuangYao duda por un momento, hasta que nota la mirada de tranquilo anhelo de Nie MingJue, y su propio rostro se suaviza en una pequeña sonrisa.

–Si aún ha quedado algo en este templo, permíteme preparar un té para nosotros antes, Da-ge.

He had his gifts prepared before he even met the girls who got through

But he had 3 gifts prepared for his top 3.

Once he had met you, he knew you were going to get the best out of the three

But he had a lot of trouble choosing the other two to give the better gifts too.

He only decided on seol-hyun and eun-bi because the eunuchs ‘liked’ them

But after hearing stories from the other boys who had spent time you, he knew that if he was to win your favour, he would also have to gift your friend something nice, and as he only had 7 gifts prepared, and there was 8 of you, he had a new gift prepared, for yeji

When he gives you his gift, he has the same reaction as jin

His heart goes BOOM, fireworks exploding everywhere

Not that he’d tell anyone, he had a reputation to uphold

The very next day, it was Min Yoongi’s turn to hand out his gifts to the ladies, each one staying in the same spot that they had chosen the day before. Again, everyone waited for the Dowager and the man to arrive before they sat down. And once they had, everyone finally sat down.

“As you all know, I am Min Yoongi, and I am sure that you know why you are all here. Today you receive my gift.” he says, a barely there smile on his pale face. His outfit is much the same as the time before. He wore a black hanbok with golden detailing of a dragon on the edges, his hair in his usual ponytail, and the mesh band covering his forehead. He looked enthralling. You couldn’t stop looking at him.Once he finishes his introductions, he makes his way down the stairs in much the same way that Jin had, although quicker. Again, they started on the furthest edge, Suzy receiving her gift of a hand held fan in black, decorated with the same golden dragon detail on his hanbok. The ladies next to her (Si-Jeong, Mi-Yeon and Sun-Hwa), all receive the same gift. Then it was Yeji, who received a dainty golden ring with the royal name engraved within the band. Seol-Hyun and Eun-bi were next, receiving a dainty gold necklace with a small golden dragon hanging off of the end of it. The looks on their faces when they received it, made it obvious that they thought they were the ‘chosen ones’. Finally it was your turn for your gift. Yoongi stood in front of you, perched comfortably on the pillows before him.

“Lady Seo, I sincerely hope you find your gift as beautiful as yourself” he told you, handing you his gift himself. You opened the box excitedly to find the most beautiful pair of golden earrings you had ever seen. You looked up with a giant smile on your face, when something shiny caught your eyes. You noticed that Yoongi himself was wearing earrings, and when you inspected further, you noticed that they were almost identical to the ones you were just gifted. In your happiness and excitement, you nearly forgot to thank the man, so you quickly smile at the man, bowing as low as you can, and thanking him deeply and graciously for your present. He nods, and returns to his spot on the stage, taking his seat once again to watch the ladies inspect their presents further.

Looking down at your gift, you decide what better time to wear them than the present, you were already wearing Seokjin’s moisturiser, why not wear Yoongi’s earrings. Carefully, you take out the small earrings that you had been wearing and replace them with the large yet delicate earrings that were in the box. Once on, you desperately wanted to look in the mirror, but you didn’t have anything near you that you could use. So you sat there happily, waiting to be given the instruction to go about your day again.

Whilst waiting, someone you recognised as one of the Queen Dowagers guards approached you with a small piece of Hanji.

“Lady Seo,

The earrings become you chin-aehaneun. I believe the Head Directorate agrees with me. The smile on his face is one rarely seen. Please join me for a luncheon with my ladies again today. The man who gave you this letter will be waiting for you outside the courtyard should you accept my request to join me.

And please, call me Eomma.

Kim Eun-Ji, Queen Dowager of the Kim Empire”

You read the letter quickly, and told and nodded at the man, signalling that you would join the dowager at her luncheon once more. Today felt like a good day.

SFD rewatch, episodes 1-5

One of the best first episodes of a series. Quickly and indelibly establishes the characterization of all the major players.

Love the kid actors, but mainly Lee Re as Boon-yi.

Piglet scene still as unacceptable as the first time. Come on.

Absolutely in love with the theatrical scene constructions, including how we meet Jeong do jeon (stealing a potato); the farce at Yi In geom's residence, Ddang-sae telling the story of "Viper", and the first time we see the Do Dang. I do love Jeong do-jeon inciting a riot (and Kim Myung-min's sexy sexy voice) but also? I think on the first watch and now, it felt a bit off. Mostly because the song becomes a swelling soundtrack over the scene- I wish they had just let it be Jeong do jeon's voice going hoarse and a few people singing it.

Got impatient with the segue into Gongmin's assassination, and at some points the name drops become tiresome. I know SFD was written for an audience familiar with these characters, and so this is on me, but having to pause every few minutes to look up wiki or bodashri's tumblr (seriously MVP of the SFD fandom) is not a great viewing experience for me.

Gil Tae mi -11/10 no notes, especially in that mango-yellow robe. Park Hyuk-kwon completely pussy out in this drama, playing twins who are polar opposites in everything except that they fight like ballet dancers.

Had to ffwd Yeon-hee's rape scene and aftermath. Yes, we get it, losing his mother and his lover are foundational to everything about Ddang-sae, but hoo boy, how about they'd...just not?

I just really, really enjoy Hong In-bang's villainy- his turn to it makes 50 times more sense to me that whatever is going on with that little psycho with his murder grove. [When he went on about justice preventing evil, my eyes rolled back in my head so hard. OKAY, you pathetic little meow-meow, if that works for you, I GUESS.]

Love that the writers re-used a line from TwDR- paraphrased, it's that "the people endure, while monarchies rise and fall". In TwDR, when Sejong says it to Jeong gi-joon, it's to refute his rather nihilistic view of the chaotic future where people are able to choose their own leaders; here Hong In bang uses it to justify raising taxes on an already overtaxed population. Writers nim, your minds.

Boon yi is THE BEST

Moo-hyul is a baby. Imagine watching the extremely boring Jo Jin-woong playing this character in 2011 and then waking up to Yoon Kyung-sang's adorable himbeaux portrayal in this.

Byun Yo-han is such a genuinely lovely actor; I just wish that Ddang-sae's whole trajectory wasn't unmitigated misery. It's harder on the rewatch because at least the first time I had hope. I think writer nims are fond of reminding us that being born poor , and consequently often powerless to resist constant degradation, is a lifelong curse that only a few escape- you see it in Kang Chae Yoon's fate as well- but I think Kang Chae yoon's fate felt like less of a punishment by capricious gods than Ddang-sae's.

Ok, but Byun Yo-han and that marketplace performance. LOVELY.

Ddang-sae's leaving Baek Yoon's dead body in the street like a prom invite for Sambong. (and then he went and left and actual note that says "whom do i kill next?") made me laugh. C'mon Sambong, take some time out from fulfilling your divine purpose to give this boy the railing he deserves. I feel like so many of both their problems would have been solved by this.

Mi pequeña hija,

Hoy con tu padre fuimos al cine. Vimos una película que significó mucho para mi. Era sobre una chica que conoció a un hombre, qué visitaba lugares abandonados, para ocuparse de cerrar la puerta que vinculaba al más allá con nuestro mundo.

La verdad no sé cómo funciona aquello del más allá. A veces espero tener sólo una cosa clara o pensar que ella es cierta, y es que existe. Si existe, tu tio abuelo Iván, está allá.

Está película fue muy importante para mi, por que creo que en la vida ocurren cosas así. Por dolor y temor a la muerte, quizás hasta rabia con ella, una parte nuestra se queda atrapada allí. Vemos la vida corta y muchas cosas comienzan a carecer de sentido. Pero a veces esa forma que adoptamos nos aleja de todo aquello que muy seguramente compartimos con esa persona que ha muerto. El amor y los lazos son algo único de vivir y experimentar. Las historias que construimos y cada uno de esos momentos que guardamos con fuerza en nuestro pecho nos hicieron, y también nos hicieron llorar al volverse un recuerdo lejano.

Tu padre vino a mi vida como ese hombre de la película. Vino a recordarme que mi dolor seguía ahí, el me recordaba a estar hablando de nuevo con mi tío. Eso me lleno de pena, por recordar. Por darme cuenta que sólo podía recordar. Pero me lleno de valor, porque enseguida supe que no quería perderlo.

Cruzar ese umbral no nos hace recuperar a quien perdimos, pero notar ese valor nos hizo buscarte, nos hizo valientes de traerte a este mundo, como muestra de ese lazo qué si existe, de esa soledad que se vuelve diminuta, de ese sentido que vuelve a aparecer cada mañana en tus ojos, en tu bella sonrisa.

Tu eres nuestro futuro y yo quiero acompañarte hasta que la naturaleza decida qué es mi momento de cruzar el umbral.

Recuerda también, si un día estas triste.. Los momentos hermosos en la vida son intensos, pero a veces pueden ser muy pequeños, muy cortos, muy chiquitos. Y en comparación, el dolor, la angustia, la tristeza puede ser muy grande y verse muy enorme y amenazante. Pero ambos, como el gato blanco y el negro, el jin y el yang, te van a ayudar. Escuchalos a ambos, aprende de ambos y sé bondadosa con ambos.

Te amo hija. Y también estoy segura de que tu padre te ama muchísimo.

¡Los 59th Baeksang Arts Awards han anunciado sus nominados para las categorías de cine y televisión!

Los candidatos fueron elegidos entre dramas, programas y películas que se emitieron o se estrenaron entre el 1 de abril de 2022 y el 31 de marzo de 2023. Sin embargo, las obras que se estrenaron durante el período de proyección del año pasado también se incluyeron en el grupo de este año. Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area.

Calificación del drama: 4/5 (⭐️).

Opinión del drama:

Como una persona que disfrutó y vivió todo el fenómeno que fue “La Casa de Papel”, no sabía qué esperar del primer remake de una de las series que cambio al mundo.

Me agradó la manera en que manejaron a las coreas y el impacto tan grande que sería unirlas, considero que fue una manera de mostrar los conflictos políticos que, considero, la serie original a veces no llegaba a abordar y que mejor manera de mostrar la “unión” de las coreas con el saludo en la línea que las divide.

El saludo, la esperanza estaba por los cielos de que las coreas estuvieran en paz y pudieran unirse en un futuro cercano, la manera en que se quita de la maqueta la línea divisoria del sur y del norte, simplemente cine.

Son muchos detalles que se aportaron a un mensaje tan fuerte como lo fue en la versión original, Corea se arriesgó con este drama pero no decepcionaron. Algo tan polémico como la cultura de Corea del Norte y trataron de mostrarlo en este drama, las diferencias entre los Surcoreanos y los Norcoreanos, pero a la vez las similitudes que los acercan a simplemente tratarse como personas y alejarse de las etiquetas y prejuicios del pasado.

Siempre se hablará de como se muestra a los Norcoreanos en los dramas, que tal vez Corea del Sur se trate de mostrar como un “héroe” y tal vez como extranjera nunca termine de comprender lo que las hizo dividirse y lo que las sigue dividiendo, pero es un tema que tiene que hablarse, pues simplemente, en ambos hemisferios hay personas con sueños, metas y ambiciones.

No es simplemente quitar la frontera, sino la unión de una comunidad, de dejar la etiqueta “Es del Sur” o “Él es del Norte” para simplemente considerarse ciudadanos coreanos.

Opinión de los personajes:

No hablaré de todos los personajes detalladamente, porque son un montón, pero destacaré lo que más me gustó de su interpretación.

Tokyo (Jung Jong Seo): Para mí, Tokyo siempre debe de estar primero. La actriz es simplemente magnífica en cada papel que interpreta. Esta interpretación creo que le dio más sentido a la misión de Tokyo, no solo como acto de rebeldía ante la situación de seguridad en su país, sino en todo lo que conlleva ser un Norcoreano en Corea del Sur.

Seon Woo Jin (Kim Yoon Jin): Pura diosa y bad ass woman en este proyecto, qué bendición. La inspectora se convirtió de mis personajes favoritos en esta versión.

Profesor (Yoo Ji Tae): Estuvo bien, solo que considero que hizo una copia exacta del profesor y no aporto al personaje.

Berlín (Park Hae Soo): GRAN ACTOR, GRAN PERSONAJE, EXCELENTE INTERPRETACIÓN. Miren, se dicen muchas cosas del Corea del Norte y no sé cuáles son ciertas, pero el flashback y lo que nos hizo ver porque Berlín es como es, simplemente magnificó.

Moscow (Lee Wong Jong): Bien, me cayó bien. Este personaje siempre merece algo mejor.

Denver (Kim Ji Hoon): Mi crush, me enamoré. Denver de por sí ya era de los personajes más carismáticos que nos pudo brindar “La Casa de Papel” y Kim Ji Hoon logró mejorarlo.

Río (Lee Hyun Woo): Me cae muy bien, por lo que pude conocer del actor, se alejó de los dramas un tiempo por críticas a sus actuaciones, pero en este papel me gustó mucho. Brindo una parte más humana y personal como lo es la cultura del estudio en corea y lo que debes llegar a ser si eres de una familia con poder.

Oslo (Lee Kyu Ho): Bien, me sigue dando miedo.

Nairobi (Jang Yoon Joo): Qué pedazo de mujer, de verdad que la quiero mucho. Yo siempre la defenderé, tú tienes todas las razones para hacer lo que quieras y no le debes de dar explicaciones a nadie.

Helsinki (Kim Ji Hoon): Bien, me sigue dando miedo.
