The Cafe by the sea by Jenny Colgan

Amongst all the crime, murder and dystopian fantasy, I need something lighter on occasion. Jenny Colgan delivered for me. This book follows Flora, who fled the quiet Scottish island Mure long ago. She lives in London where she can be as ambitious as she wishes, while remaining anonymous—which is impossible on Mure. 

When Flora is pushed back to the island, she is swept back up into the life with her father and brothers. It is loud, chaotic and eyeopening. Flora must do some soul searching and a lot of growing to finally give her life the direction she longs for. And as she rediscovers her love for cooking, she might just learn to open up a little more. 

This book was light, though there’s enough drama to keep me entertained. Unrequited love, competition and emotionally stunted people that never learned to deal with the grief they had been working hard to push down. But grief is a fickle thing and it won’t stay down. 

The characters are flawed, sometimes infuriatingly so, but that makes their growth and their journey so much more interesting. And all with a charming little Scottish island as the backdrop. (You might not be aware, but I LOVE Scotland.)

I cannot tell you how easily this book read. It was hard to put down, it was that fun, heartwarming and entertaining.

I love perfect timing! I finished this book with enough time to write my review just before the end of my shift today (about 3 minutes left as I’m writing).

This was such a cute book. I read it because we’re reading one of the Christmas books from the Mure series for book club later this year and I wanted to make sure I was in the loop with everything that happens with these characters (though, someone on Goodreads said you really don’t need to read the fist two books to be able to follow the Christmas book).

This book had such a Hallmark movie feel to it, though. And, I think had it not been for that, I would have given it 5 stars instead of 4. (I’ve watched so many Hallmark movies with my mom that I was predicting the ending of this book about half way through.) But it was still a good read and I enjoyed the story! I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series!

The Summer Seaside Kitchen Series - Jenny Colgan

This series by Jenny Colgan (The Summer Seaside Kitchen, The Endless Beach, and An Island Christmas), is about a small scottisch island called Mure. Flora MacKenzie was raised on the island, but escaped to London after the death of her mother. She’s certain that turning back is not a good idea. But then she has to turn back for her job, and is faced with everything that she has run away from. Fortunately, on the island she is not faced with her hopeless crush on her boss 24/7. But of course, that luck runs out as well as Joel has to come down to the island as well. 

These books are amazing for a lot of different reasons. The setting will make you want to catch a plane to the Scottish Islands to see the beauty of it for yourself, and the food mentioned will make you  mouth-watering hungry. But most of all, it’s the way love, friendship and family is woven into the story. These are, no doubt about it, the best feelgood novels for a weekend or vacation read. The fourth book of the series will be out soon. 

Jenny Colgan writes beautifully, and always succeeds in making the emotions jump out of the pages. She has written a lot of books (like, a lot), but sadly, after a while you start noticing some kind of pattern. On the other hand, the pattern is usually nature, food, and love, so it’s honestly really okay if you’re looking for a calming and satisfying read.

Concepts of love, the body, and art have always coexisted - with great emotion comes great art, and naturally, creators frequently work to find unique ways to express these complex and beautiful facets of being a human. The 3 new collections opening this February at Light Grey Art Lab feature an eclectic range of original illustrative works and artist produced goods, featuring the aesthetics of the figure, the humor of taboo, and a collection of illustrated dating profiles. Tasteful Nudes: The delicate curves of a body emerge through the settling dust of chalk pastel. The artist peers over their drawing board at a trusted model, reclining elegantly on their vintage lounge sofa. Their masterpiece is complete… An exploration capturing the inherent beauty of the human form. The Tasteful Nudes Exhibition includes 50+ creatives and is a celebration of the sensual, the subtle, and the sensory aspects of the human form. From sexy self-portraits and boudoir-esque paintings, to romantic reclining poses, to suggestive silhouettes, 'Tasteful' is the key word! Works include original drawings, digital illustrations, and more. Innuendo: It’s 7th period in high school, you’re in health class, and the teacher brings out the inevitable props… A banana, a donut, and all sorts of properly conservative allusions to the body. The class snickers, and for the rest of the day, innuendos are passed from friend to friend under the probing ears of the teachers.
