Novel Nuggets - All About Audiobooks (Part II)
Novel Nuggets – All About Audiobooks (Part II)
One of the ways I discovered that I might not be handling the stress of the past few months is that no matter how often I tried, I could never summon the energy or desire to sit down and write reviews. At first, I didn’t think anything of it, knowing I would eventually write them. Then a week became a month. A month became five months. One overdue review became five. Five outstanding reviews…

With The Beatles was released on November 22, 1963. The album features the first Harrisong — “Don’t Bother Me.” “We were doing a two-week season in Bournemouth [in August 1963] and I was sick and confined to the hotel. I was just staying in bed all day and going to the concert each night. I wrote the song [‘Don’t Bother Me’] one afternoon, composing it on guitar. I got the music first, with the title — then I filled in the other words later. I suppose it was just an excuse to see if I could write a song. I didn’t really have any songs together when the Beatles were formed — not like John and Paul. They started writing just around the end of school, but I’d never thought of writing until that time in Bournemouth. And I remember thinking then: ‘If they can write I’m sure it can’t be that difficult because, you know, they’re not that smarter than me.’ So really it’s like anything you want to do — you just keep on trying to get it better and you know you’re not going to be a sensation until you’ve really worked at it a long time. And even then it probably won’t be sensational. Of course, it was difficult with the prolific output of John and Paul to get my songs recorded at first and even if it hadn’t been, I’d have been pretty self-conscious about writing crummy songs. You have to go through all the bad things in order to get into the good things… you get hung up before you start because you think, ‘I can’t say this, and I can’t write that…’ so the biggest breakthrough is in eliminating the hang ups. I think that’s what happened with me; I suddenly realized certain truths about writing songs and it made everything come easier.” - George Harrison, Record Mirror, January 1, 1972 (x)

Richard Bowie Spikes
Tumblr media
-Richard Bowie Spikes was a prolific inventor with eight patents to his name. Primarily interested in automobile mechanics, Spikes also sought to improve the operation of items as varied as barber chairs and trolley cars.
On April 9, 1907, Spikes patented a beer-tapper. Connected to a keg, the tap used tubing to ease the release of beer from the barrel. His next invention was for a self-locking rack for billiard cues. He received the patent on October 11, 1910. A decade later, on December 14, 1920, Spikes, he patented a “trolley pole arrester”. According to the patent application, Spikes’ device would automatically pull down the pole when the circuit is broken to prevent the breaking of the trolley wire and injury to the pole.” Over the next forty years, Spikes would patent at least seven more items, including a break testing machine in 1921; a pantograph for conveying electrical current to trolleys’ wires in 1923; a combination milk bottle opener and cover in 1926; a device to obtain average samples and temperatures of tank liquids, for automobiles and industry in 1931; an improved gear shift transmission system in 1932; a horizontally swinging barber’s chair in 1950; and, finally, an automatic brake safety system in 1962 at the age of 84. Of all these innovations, the best-known are those related to automotive technology. Spikes’ gear shifting device aimed to keep the gears for various speeds in constant mesh, enhancing the turn-of-the-century invention of the automatic transmission. His automatic brake safety system was also significant; according to the patent application, it provided provide a reserve braking action in case of damage to the normal braking means and is still used in some buses as a fail-safe means of stopping the vehicle. Spikes is also widely credited with patenting an automobile signaling system (turn signal) in the early 1910s, Richard B. Spikes died on January 22, 1963 in Los Angeles, California at the age of 84.

Happy Birthday Charles Addams
Tumblr media
With the Wednesday series having done so well on Netflix, she has become a very popular character. Of course, if it hadn’t been for Charles Addams, there wouldn’t be a Wednesday, and January 7th, is her creator’s 111th Birthday.
Tumblr media
For a good part of the 20th Century, Charles Addams twisted look at life was very much a part of popular culture. Alfred Hitchcock was quite a fan, and went out of his way to meeting him in person. Hitchcock even gave him a shoutout in his film “North by Northwest”, while the house in Psycho was based on the houses he drew in a lot of cartoons. His series of Cartoons in the New Yorker were so popular, that the characters we now know as Gomez and Morticia, were referenced by Hannah Barbera, and in Rocky and Bullwinkle. He also did poster art for the 1957 film “How to Murder you Rich Uncle”, and the 1963 Hammer/William Castle remake of “The Old Dark House”. In 1962, dolls were even released by Aboriginal, where Morticia and Wednesday, finally got names. the 1964 series “The Addams Family” cemented Charles Addams as a part of popular culture to this day.
Tumblr media
So, why am I have such interest in not just the “Addams Family”, but the works of Charles Addams? As I grew up, I was a fan of the 1964 TV series, and when my mother rented a 16 MM print of “The Old Dark House”, I was fascinated to see the opening credits created by Charles Adams. I think being a misfit had a lot to do with being in the military in the early 1980s, that in an army recreation facility, there was a copy of one of his collections of cartoons among the books, and I finally discovered the wonderfully twisted New Yorker cartoons, and it has cemented my love of his work ever since. I have a love of spooky old houses, antique cars, and twisted humor. When you really feel that you are an oddball, it’s only going to make you love it when you feel you’ve discovered a kindred spirit.

The Subtle British Pop Culture/Timeline In CHICKEN RUN
On occasion, I've pointed out when the original CHICKEN RUN is set.
Tumblr media
It's often been written that CHICKEN RUN was "set in the '50s", a sort of vague descriptor of its rather dreary post-war England setting. One could assume that from the technology present in the movie, and the homages to 1950s prisoner-of-war films. The obvious ones being STALAG 17 (the number 17 is on the main hut that the chickens all plot in) and THE GREAT ESCAPE. The character Fowler was of the mascot division of the Royal Air Force during World War II. All that talk about his medals. Chocks away!
The easiest way to pinpoint when CHICKEN RUN is set, at the earliest, is knowing what the songs are.
The chickens, in a hut, dance to a cover of Joe Turner's 'Flip, Flop and Fly', Turner's original was released in 1955, an early example of a rock n' roll song. Britain certainly had rock n' roll in a pre-Beatles era, but it doesn't seem as well-known to the average American as American rockers - you know, Elvis, Little Richard, etc. - are to Brits.
Later in the film, Rocky the rooster is jamming out to 'The Wanderer' by Dion.
youtube
The song first appeared in North America in November of 1961 - both as a single and as an album track on RUNAROUND SUE (the title track another big hit for him), and if you look in the opening credits sequence, Mrs. Tweedy works with a calendar that says "November"... However, 'The Wanderer' was first released in the UK in January of 1962. And it doesn't seem like much time has passed since the opening credits and the end of the movie...
'The Wanderer' reached #10 in the UK, which was great for an American rock/pop song over there... If anything, the movie is likely set in November/December 1962, so that was plenty of time for 'The Wanderer' to climb the charts, and then be played on the radio every once in a while. Things took a little while in a pre-streaming age, ya know? *waves cane* *I'm actually not that old, nowhere near lol I just love this kinda pop culture history*
Tumblr media
So CHICKEN RUN is still kind of a post-war/pre-Beatles England, and it's set in a secluded location inhabited by a middle-aged couple who likely wouldn't have had any idea what was going in the teen beat scene. The Beatles' 'Love Me Do', the single that really put them on the map in the UK, was released in early October of 1962. Being their first true single (not the 'My Bonnie' recording they did in Germany with Tony Sheridan), it charted at a great #17 in the UK... Which of course was nothing compared to what was to come, the strings of #1s, or at least close to that. 'Please Please Me' was the second single, released in January 1963, it hit #2 in the UK. Beatlemania pretty much becomes a thing in the UK by the middle of 1963... It would take a little while for us yanks to catch the fever...
Anyways, CHICKEN RUN is set in November/December 1962. Or maybe it's 1963, who knows, but I think it's pre-Beatlemania rural England. Yorkshire to be exact.
It's kinda funny how the Disney animated ONE HUNDRED AND ONE DALMATIANS shares some similarities in this regard. That film was released in January 1961, and is set in both London and rural England. Its second half during the late fall/early winter no less. The puppies arrive in October, as stated in the film, and the film ends during Christmastime. Snow everywhere, dreary atmosphere, etc.... And then you have the Tweedys in CHICKEN RUN. Mrs. Tweedy is kind of a combination of Cruella de Vil *and* Jasper. She's got the contempt for animals like Cruella, and is taller and the brains like Jasper. Horace, the shorter, pudgier one in the equation - who is onto what the animals are doing but isn't believed, is totally Mr. Tweedy.
That brings us to the recently-released CHICKEN RUN: DAWN OF THE NUGGET... The sequel swaps prisoner-of-war movies and World War II imagery for James Bond and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE. Spy movies in general.
Tumblr media
One look at Mrs. Tweedy's high-tech new factory shows that in *spades*. But the folks at Aardman Animations did their homework, a lot of the details and background design and such, it legitimately looks like the lair of a supervillain in a '60s spy movie. Much like how Nomanisan Island does in THE INCREDIBLES, another very midcentury modern-inspired movie and franchise. There's also that charming UPA-esque cartoon on how the chickens are processed into nuggets, great stuff there. I also kind of get a bit of a Gerry Anderson vibe here, too. He was known for marionette shows - done in a process called "Supermarionation" - like THUNDERBIRDS and CAPTAIN SCARLET AND THE MYSTERONS. I assume most of the crew behind these movies grew up watching those shows.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And of course, a big indicator... Towards the end of the film, all the chickens - brainwashed by mind-control collars that make them all happy-go-lucky - are being forced up an escalator to a popcorn chicken death. In this pretty creepy sequence, they're all doing this while Cliff Richard's 'Summer Holiday' plays in the background. The bright, pastel-colored set adorned with simplistic countryside-looking hills that these chickens are brainwashed in before they are to be ground into fast food is reminiscent of vintage British and European children's programs. I was thinking of stuff like THE MAGIC ROUNDABOUT and such, which was also a stop-motion production.
Tumblr media
youtube
Oh yeah, 'Summer Holiday'. That song came out in January 1963, it was the title song for a movie that was *huge* in England when it first came out. Cliff Richard is the prime example of a pre-Beatles British pop/rock star, I feel he's almost synonymous with that period of British pop music before John, Paul, George, and Ringo showed up. So, CHICKEN RUN 2 is set *after* January 1963. Plus, Ginger and Rocky's daughter Molly needed some time to grow up a bit.
Either this was intentional or not, but it strangely adds up. It's pretty chronological, either by accident or they made sure they didn't have too many anachronisms... Other than the cartoonishly high tech of Mrs. Tweedy's Fun-Land Farms, but then again, the pie machine in the original CHICKEN RUN was kind of improbable too. But that's the fun of the CHICKEN RUN movies, so it's a staple.
And even in other Aardman works, there are fun nods to British pop culture and media. For example, in WALLACE & GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT, Art Garfunkel's 'Bright Eyes' can be heard on the car radio in one scene. Garfunkel is American, yes, but 'Bright Eyes' was composed and recorded for the soundtrack of the British animated classic WATERSHIP DOWN. Just in case you've never seen or even heard of that movie. WATERSHIP DOWN is about rabbits, and in the WALLACE & GROMIT movie, they're dealing with rabbits! Quite clever.
Another favorite of mine is in FARMAGEDDON: A SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE. Of course, Shaun the Sheep is spun off from WALLACE & GROMIT, he appeared in the short film A CLOSE SHAVE. The second SHAUN THE SHEEP movie brings in science fiction and aliens, a real 180 from the small-scale first film. At the end of the film, the Farmer accidentally gets onto the UFO and is not on Earth anymore! Before they get him back, a song called 'Forever Autumn' can be heard playing on a radio.
'Forever Autumn' is a rewrite of a Lego commercial jingle composed by Jeff Wayne in 1969, with lyrics by Gary Osborne and Paul Vigrass. The two lyricists recorded the first version of that song in 1972 for an album called QUEUES. A couple years later, Jeff Wayne got the idea to do a musical version of H. G. Wells' THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. A musical album, bringing in several mostly British talents to retell - through story and song - the British sci-fi staple. 'Forever Autumn' was covered for the album, with lead vocals sung by Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues. Of course, another British group... all for the section of the album in which the protagonist - a journalist - fears his wife had been killed in the Martian invasion. "'Cause you're not here." Which is the lyric heard in FARMAGEDDON when they realize that the Farmer went to outer space!
(It takes a special kind of skill to take such a depressing song and make it FUNNY in any context.)
Anyways, those are just a couple examples off the top of my head. Aardman's work is distinctly British, to the core. And the CHICKEN RUN movies give me a fascinating idea of when they are set, a very cartoon British '60s.

ELVIS PRESLEY'S INDUCTION IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME (1986)
— A part of George Klein's speech explained by Elvis himself.
youtube
George Klein - 1986 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Speech (accepting on behalf of Elvis Presley). During his acceptance speech on behalf of Elvis Presley, George Klein quotes the Jaycees Speech Elvis gave on January 16, 1971, during the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 1970 ceremony, but the most special part to me was listening to George saying:
I never saw Elvis Presley refusing an autograph. I never saw Elvis refusing a handshake. I never saw Elvis refusing to take a picture with anybody.
This made me go back to an Elvis interview from 1962. EP was filming "It Happened At the World's Fair" (filming took place between August 28 to September 17, 1962 and the movie was released in early 1963) when he took some time to be interviewed by Lloyd Shearer. To him, Elvis told his reasons why he never refused an autograph or picture. He was only 27 years old when he said:
August 17, 1962: ELVIS INTERVIEWED BY REPORTER LLOYD SHEARER.
Lloyd Shearer: Elvis, people's opinions of you seems to have changed since back in the old days. Now everybody thinks you're a model fellow... you know, you're a good guy... epitome of a young man. Now I'm just wondering, is it by accident of by design? What do you think it is? EP: Well, I've tried to be the same all through this thing. Naturally, you learn a lot about people, and you're involved in a lot of different situations. But I've tried to be the same, I mean the way I was brought up. And I always considered other people's feelings. I've never... in other words, I didn't kick anybody on the way (laughs). And I've always treated people just like the way I would like to be treated myself. And I consider other people's feelings. I don't assume the attitude of 'get these people out of here', like I have heard of being done, because those people are sincere in their feelings. And if they want autographs and pictures and things like that, I don't just sign the autographs and the pictures and so forth to help my popularity or to make them like me. I do it because I know that they are sincere. And they see you and they want an autograph to take home. They got an autograph book, or they've got their little camera and everything, so you have to know that. And if you don't do it, it will make them mad at you, they don't understand, you hurt their feelings and you make a lot of enemies that way. And for no reason, because it's as simple as this. Once you get involved in this racket... er, business (laughs), your life is public. Regardless of what anybody says... 'my private life is my own'. Well it is to a certain extent. I mean, everybody has to have a certain amount of privacy. But once you get involved in this business and you're doing a public service, you're trying to entertain people, your life is not your own. Because people are gonna want to know what you are doing, where you are, what you wear, what you eat. These things are natural, are normal, and you have to consider that. You consider that the people are sincere. They don't know the kind of life you lead. They don't know what kind of person you are. And do I try to remember that, that's all. It's simple. It's no problem. It's no big effort that I put forth. I don't have any plans or anything. I just act on my own initiative. It's the way I feel that is the right way, like I have [done] with everything else. Thank God I've been pretty fortunate. I haven't made any bad, bad decisions... and everything. But it's the way I was brought up, you know. My surroundings, my mother and my father and the whole family. We're always considerate of other people's feelings.
Deep inside our hearts, we, fans, feel Elvis Presley deserved much more than life gave him, beyond fortune, fame or recognition, but since we cannot change the past, I will keep saying until the very day I die, with profound conviction, about how Elvis deserves all the people's respect. Also, it would be amazing if the entertainers around the world, from today and from the times to come, could listen to Elvis' words from this 1962 interview, get inspired and try to live up to it.
About the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, well, George Klein did justice on his quick speech that day. One of the most important, special and unforgettable things about Elvis is how humble, down to earth and loving he was to people and this is something will always worth being addressed. EP may have changed his way of doing things but the important parts of him never changed indeed. There will never be another Elvis Aaron Presley, and the world wouldn't be the same without his blinding, bright shining light that still airs above us. ♥
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The August 17, 1962 interview is one of the few one-on-one lengthy interviews of Elvis' career and it's full of great insights on the King's mind, a few precious glimpses with the way he truly used to think and feel about many aspects of life. You can (and should) listen to the FULL INTERVIEW HERE.

THIS DAY IN GAY HISTORY
based on: The White Crane Institute's 'Gay Wisdom', Gay Birthdays, Gay For Today, Famous GLBT, glbt-Gay Encylopedia, Today in Gay History, Wikipedia, and more … January 4
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
1750 – France Bruno Lenoir and Jean Diot are caught having sex in public for which they are arrested. A year later they were executed. There was general surprise in France at the severity of their sentence. Their execution was the last in France for consensual sodomy.

Tumblr media
1877 – Marsden Hartley (d.1943) was an American Modernist painter, poet, and essayist. Hartley was born in Lewiston, Maine, where his English parents had settled.
In 1898, at age 22, Hartley moved to New York City to study painting at the New York School of Art. Hartley was a great admirer of Albert Pinkham Ryder and visited his studio in Greenwich Village as often as possible. His friendship with Ryder inspired Hartley to view art as a spiritual quest.
Hartley first traveled to Europe in April 1912, and he became acquainted with Gertude Stein's circle of avante-garde writers and artists in Paris. Stein, along with Hart Crane and Sherwood Anderson, encouraged Hartley to write as well as paint.
Tumblr media

In 1913, Hartley moved to Berlin, where he continued to paint. Many of Hartley's Berlin paintings were further inspired by the German military pageantry then on display, though his view of this subject changed after the outbreak of World War I, once war was no longer "a romantic but a real reality." The earliest of his Berlin paintings were shown in the landmark 1913 Armory Show in New York.
In Berlin, Hartley developed a close relationship with a Prussian lieutenant, Karl von Freyburg, who was the cousin of Hartley's friend Arnold Ronnebeck. References to Freyburg were a recurring motif in Hartley's work, most notably in Portrait of a German Officer (1914). Freyburg's subsequent death during the war hit Hartley hard, and he afterward idealized their relationship. Many scholars believe Hartley to have been gay, and have interpreted his work regarding Freyburg as embodying his homosexual feelings for him.
Tumblr media
In addition to being considered one of the foremost American painters of the first half of the 20th century, Hartley also wrote poems, essays, and stories.
Cleophas and His Own: A North Atlantic Tragedy is a story based on two periods he spent in 1935 and 1936 with the Mason family in the Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, fishing community of East Point Island. Hartley, then in his late 50s, found there both an innocent, unrestrained love and the sense of family he had been seeking since his unhappy childhood in Maine. The impact of this experience lasted until his death in 1943 and helped widen the scope of his mature works, which included numerous portrayals of the Masons.
He wrote of the Masons, "Five magnificent chapters out of an amazing, human book, these beautiful human beings, loving, tender, strong, courageous, dutiful, kind, so like the salt of the sea, the grit of the earth, the sheer face of the cliff." In Cleophas and His Own, written in Nova Scotia in the fall of 1936, Hartley expresses his immense grief at the tragic drowning of the Mason sons. The independent filmmaker Michael Maglaras has created a feature film Cleophas and His Own, released in 2005, which uses a personal testament by Hartley as its screenplay.

1946 – Arthur Conley aka Lee Roberts (d.2003) was a U.S. soul singer, best known for the 1967 hit "Sweet Soul Music".
Conley was born in McIntosh County, Georgia, U.S., and grew up in Atlanta. He first recorded in 1959 as the lead singer of Arthur & the Corvets. With this group, he released three singles in 1963 and 1964 – "Poor Girl", "I Believe", and "Flossie Mae" – on the Atlanta based record label, National Recording Company.
In 1964, he moved to a new label (Baltimore's Ru-Jac Records) and released "I'm a Lonely Stranger". When Otis Redding heard this, he asked Conley to record a new version, which was released on Redding's own fledgling label Jotis Records, as only its second release. Conley met Redding in 1967. Together they rewrote the Sam Cooke song "Yeah Man" into "Sweet Soul Music", which, at Redding's insistence, was released on the Atco-distributed label Fame Records, and was recorded at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. It proved to be a massive hit, going to the number two position on the U.S. charts and the Top Ten across much of Europe. "Sweet Soul Music" sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.
After several years of hits singles in the early 1970s, he relocated to England in 1975, and spent several years in Belgium, settling in Amsterdam (Netherlands) in spring 1977. At the beginning of 1980 he had some major performances as Lee Roberts and the Sweaters in the Ganzenhoef, Paradiso, De Melkweg and the Concertgebouw, and was highly successful. At the end of 1980 he moved to the Dutch village of Ruurlo, legally changing his name to Lee Roberts — his middle name and his mother's maiden name. He promoted new music via his Art-Con Productions company. Amongst the bands he promoted was the heavy metal band Shockwave from The Hague. A live performance on January 8, 1980, featuring Lee Roberts & the Sweaters, was released as an album entitled Soulin' in 1988.
Conley was gay, and several music writers have said that his homosexuality was a bar to greater success in the United States and one of the reasons behind his move to Europe and his eventual name change. In 2014, rock historian Ed Ward wrote, "[Conley] headed to Amsterdam and changed his name to Lee Roberts. Nobody knew 'Lee Roberts,' and at last Conley was able to live in peace with a secret he had hidden – or thought he had – for his entire career: he was gay. But nobody in Holland cared."
Conley died from intestinal cancer in Ruurlo, Netherlands aged 57 in November 2003. He was buried in Vorden.

1962 – Peter Steele , formerly Lord Petrus Steele , actually Petrus Thomas Ratajczyk , born in Brooklyn , New York, was an American musician . Steele was the singer , bassist and songwriter for the metal bands Carnivore and Type O Negative.
Known above all for his powerful bass-baritone voice, Steele first worked as a singer and bassist with the heavy metal group Fallout and then with the thrash metal band Carnivore. After Carnivore had disbanded for the time being, Steele, who was still working for the New York Park Authority at the time, founded the music group Type O Negative together with Sal Abruscato, Kenny Hickey and Josh Silver. Steele was particularly controversial in the early years of the band due to supposedly right-wing extremist ideas in the public. He himself always denied such allegations. He later created the Vinland flag , inspired by the Nordic flags and his own Scandinavian ancestors , which was henceforth to be found on the band's releases.
In August 1995, Steele, who was an imposing figure with his stature and height of 2.03 m, posed naked for the US edition of Playgirl. However, when he learned that around 75% of the readership are homosexual men, some of whom would now make advances to him and he was then exposed to the malice of the other band members and fans, he wrote the song I Like Goils (dt. I like girls ).
Peter Steele died on April 14, 2010 of complications from an aortic aneurysm . Steele's companion Sal Abruscato (formerly Type O Negative drummer) said they were in the process of getting Steele into an ambulance when he passed away before leaving the house. Before his death, Steele had been drug free for nine months and was in the process of making plans for a new Type O Negative album.

He graduated from Carmel High School in 1987, then from Fordham University in 1991, and began working at NPR in 1991 while still at Fordham. He became a news host and reporter at WNYC in 1992. He was openly gay.
He spent 28 years working as a radio news host, reporter, and producer. He featured on several local and national NPR programs, such as Morning Edition (which he hosted), Weekend Edition, All Things Considered, and On the Media. His documentary work includes "The Perfume of the Bronx" and the "Coney Island Cyclone Anniversary."
For his reporting, Hake was awarded accolades from the Associated Press Broadcasters Association and the Society of Professional Journalists. Hake made his Broadway debut as a chimney sweep in Mary Poppins.
In his Twitter profile, Hake noted his unique role in the bustling Big Apple, writing: "I wake people up and tell them stories on the alarm clock, the app, streaming, in the shower, in the car, etc."
As coronavirus cases surged in the city and officials told office workers to stay home, Hake set up a makeshift studio in his one-bedroom apartment, complete with an art deco "on air" light and various microphone flags bearing the station's logos over the years.
Hake died on April 24, 2020, at age 51, in his Upper East Side home. His manner of death was ruled to be a result of an accident, according to the City's Medical Examiner.

Doris Troy
Tumblr media
R&B Singer Doris Troy was born Doris Elaine Higginsen in Bronx, New York, on January 6, 1937. Both a singer and a songwriter, her biggest hit, “Just One Look,” was released in 1963 and peaked at no. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Troy’s father was a Barbadian Pentecostal minister, and she began singing in the church choir.  Her parents disapproved of R&B and rock ‘n’roll music and forbade their four children to listen to it. Despite their ban on that music, she became an usherette at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem where she heard and met many of the performers including James Brown, who was credited with “discovering” her.
In 1957, Troy formed a three-girl group named the Halos and began writing songs. A publisher paid her $100 for her song “How About That,” which became a hit for Dee Clark. To earn a steady income, Troy began singing backup and teamed with Cissy Houston and her cousins Dionne and Dee Dee Warrick for Atlantic Records in 1963. Calling themselves the Sweet Inspirations, they sang backup for The Drifters, Solomon Burke, and other established artists.
After writing “Just One Look” with Gregory Carroll in 1963, the couple took the demo to Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records who immediately signed them. The record was released under the name Doris Troy, as Higginsen changed her name to Troy after the legendary heroine, Helen of Troy.  “Just One Look” was a smash success and was later recorded by The Hollies and Linda Ronstadt. Unfortunately, Doris Troy was never able to match her first hit.
In 1964, Troy visited London and became enamored with the British music scene. She moved to the United Kingdom in 1969 and signed with Apple Records, owned by the Beatles. Throughout the 1970s, she collaborated with British artists and developed a loyal following. She once did a live show backed on piano by Elton John, who at the time was not well-known. Troy sang backup on George Harrison’s hit, “My Sweet Lord,” Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain,” and Billy Preston’s album That’s the Way God Planned It. Returning to the U.S. in 1974, she shared the stage with Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, and other noted artists.
Perhaps her most memorable stage performance was in Mama, I Want to Sing, a musical she wrote along with her younger sister, Vy Higginsen, and her husband, Ken Wydro. Based on Troy’s life, the musical featured Troy playing her mother, Geraldine. When it opened at the Heckschers Theatre in Spanish Harlem on March 23, 1983, it ran for 1,500 performances before going on a national and international tour. From 1986 to 1999 the musical toured Germany, Italy and Japan, and was performed at the West End Theatre in the UK. The musical was made into a motion picture titled Mama, I Want to Sing starring Ciara, Patti LaBelle, and Hill Harper and released on DVD in 2012.
Respiratory problems forced Troy to move from New York to Las Vegas, Nevada, for the dry desert climate. She continued to perform in supper clubs and casinos. Doris Troy died of emphysema on February 16, 2004, at the age of 67 in Las Vegas.

Song of the Day - “A Change Is Gonna Come”
Today marks the 60th anniversary of Sam Cooke recording his great civil rights anthem “A Change Is Gonna Come” - January 30th, 1964, at RCA Studios in Hollywood, California.
Cooke wrote it in the Fall of 1963 when he and his band were turned away from a motel in Louisiana.
While it wasn’t one of Cooke’s biggest hits, it is considered his most influential and powerful composition, and has come to be called among the the greatest songs ever released. It was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress and the National Recording registry sa being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically important”.
Besides the painful inspiration of being banished from a whites-only motel, Sam Cooke was also inspired by Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ In The Wind”, which he saw as an example of how a popular song could move people positively. He was further inspired by Dr. King’s dream speech from August of 1963.
Cooke gave his frequent collaborative arranger Rene Hall free rein with the instrumentation and orchestration. Hall recognized the power of the song and decided to add a full orchestra and design the arrangement like a movie score.
It was organized to present the song for the first time on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show” on February 7th, and a full orchestra was brought in to add to the Tonight Show band.
The tape of the performance wasn’t saved for some reason, and the planned bigness of the debut was completely overshadowed by the Beatles’ performance on the Ed Sullivan Show a day or so later.
Cooke decided that the song spooked him and reminded him of death. He would never perform it again.
The song was first released on Cooke’s album “Ain’t That Good News” in March.
A single version was cut and prepared for release in December of the year.
Sam Cooke tragically died just before it was released.
“A Change Is Gonna Come” got famously covered by Otis Redding, and the Fifth Dimension.
Spike Lee chose it as the music under the scene in “Malcolm X” where Malcolm is contemplatively driving himself to the Audubon Ballroom where he will be assassinated. Very powerful.
The song has been sampled by many rappers.
When Barack Obama spoke just after winning election in 2008, his first words, in reference to this song were, "It's been a long time coming, but tonight, change has come to America.”
Then, at his inaugural, the song was performed in duet by Bettye LaVette and Jon Bon Jovi.
It continues to be performed by many artists at events both political and tribute oriented.
Truly one of America’s best anthems.... and never doesn't give me chills...

Hi I’m sorry to bug you (pun intended) but do you mind explaining everything you listed in the 2023 tumblr bug poll. I’ve been here all year but I don’t think I understand all of the options. You have been really fun to follow this year I appreciate your presence in our community :)
Tumblr media
thank you Anon 1 that is very kind of you to say!!!! :)
All right, buckle up folks:
Get Back day-by-day re-watch (January): In January some people on decided to rewatch the bits of Get Back from that specific date, some also went through the nagra tapes of that day. They'd make cool compilation posts with moments that stuck out to them. I just remembered it was actually called Get Backuary :) I didn't really participate though because January is a busy time for me, in general.
Beatles poll wars (around February-April): once the poll feature reached bug tumblr we started having a LOT of polls and it caused a not insignificant amount of discourse and accusations of "bootlicking" or whatever lol. Interestingly, we discovered that Paul and George have roughly the same amount of fans (taking ~35% each) and John and Ringo also have about the same amount of and only about half as many fans (~15% each).
McLennon Conspiracy Blogger Disappearance Event (April): I explained this here, though I forgot to mention that in mid-April this blogger went scorched earth and dropped off tumblr completely. One time they made a post insinuating that no one's ever bothered wondering why John was depressed in 65/66 (and implied it was because THEY knew McLennon had broken up for a while or something)… Sir, this is the John Lennon Psychoanalysis Website.
Eyes of the Storm (June): Paul published a book and held an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery featuring tons of never before seen pictures from late 1963 to early 1964. Very fun time though people randomly claimed the majority of the pics were John when that wasn't really true lol there was just a general bias in which pictures from the gallery got shared.
Now And Then announcement + initial discourse (June): in a radio interview to promote said gallery, Paul offhand mentioned he had used Peter Jackson's AI technology to isolate John's vocal and "the last Beatles song" would be released later this year. There was a first wave of discourse from people thinking Paul was gonna use an AI-generated John vocal, rather than use AI to isolate an existing vocal (this was so frustrating because it was so clear in context what Paul meant but online news just ran with it). Then, there was a second wave of discourse (which was revived upon the songs release) over the extent of George's involvement and how much he would have wanted this.
Beatles song tournament (July–August): A sideblog was created to do a Beatles song poll battle. It got a bit intense lol. Everyone started hatejerking about Hey Jude beating A Day In The Life in the semi-finals.
Top Worm™ (August): Literally One Of The Greatest Moments On This Site. Also, let no one tell you John wasn't Top Worm. It is law.
Now And Then song + video (November): think this one's self-explanatory but basically Now And Then came out, we all reacted to it, the video came out the next day and was kinda hilariously bad but in the funniest way possible, George Discourse Part 2 and also How Much Is Paul Allowed To Change John's Song Discourse which I found puzzling lol. Someone said him removing a verse was "Paul Rewriting History". fantastic. no notes. what a time to be alive.

Thanks for your quick reply to my previous ask! I do know the scenes you are referring to, I was just wondering whether he rejected her before writers gave them their back story. I was referring to the follwowing ask: "So uhm, i wonder how did namor got so attracted to Emma? I read one of the issue that Namor basically told Emma to stop throwing herself at him and then I saw him basically throw himself at Emma in X-men title." Maybe you know the scene the person mentioned?
You're welcome, and yes I do know the scene you are referring to.
Emma and Namor first shown together in Secret Invasion (2008) #8
Tumblr media
However their first meeting with introductions (pre Emma regaining her memories and the flashback in Uncanny X-Men (1963) Annual 2 (2009)) is in Secret Invasion: Dark Reign which was released a month before in December 2008, so Emma never threw herself at Namor nor was she rejected by Namor prior to their past relationship reveal in January 2009.
(I know Namor looks bad here, I know. But the artist apologized later so I try to forget it exists. lol.)
Tumblr media
Uncanny X-Men (1963) Annual 2 (2009)
Tumblr media
As you see it's Emma who rejected Namor's advances the first two times they met.
The scene you're looking for is in Namor: The First Mutant (2010) #2, set during the Utopia Era, where Alantis was rebuilt under the island the X-Men were on, supporting the pillar/base of the island from sinking into the sea. Emma visits Namor in New Atlantis with Loa, a mutant who sorta becomes Namor's sidekick during this era. So yes, Namor rejects Emma but it's after the Cabal Era.
Tumblr media
This line doesn't make sense with literally every other appearance from Namor and Emma's meetings and throughout the Namor's X-Men era, he's smitten with Emma, always paying Emma compliments, trying to seduce her away from Scott. They have always had this sharp playful banter and crazy chemistry together.
Uncanny X-Men (2012) #2-3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Uncanny X-Men (1963) #527
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Uncanny X-Men (1963) Annual 2 (2009)
Tumblr media
However the writer did want to take Namor in a different direction and be romantically involved with their character, the Atlantean Logomancer, Abira, who was the main female romance for this series so I suppose that's why he wrote this, because otherwise it makes no sense when Namor was literally defending Emma's honor in her absence like in Uncanny X-Men (1963) #528.
Tumblr media
The Namor/Emma/Scott love triangle has it's cringe moments, but generally I really love and enjoy the Namor and Emma moments. I def have critic of how Emma is written in the First Mutant series, the writer literally refers to her as The Whore to Sue's Madonna, and the whole love triangle in general in X-Men comics, because Marvel likes to use Namor to stir up romance drama for couples.
