Reviewing all the stories in junji ito maniac because I can, fuck you :)
The strange hikizuri siblings - uhh okay. Not scary nothing even happened. Okay a guy was a jealous simp, little kids are just like that, some guy threw up bread dough ig, then a ghost stared at everyone for a while and dipped the end
The story of the mysterious tunnel - Jesus Christ that was pretty spooky what the hell. Lost my marbles when he assumed the drop was water, and the kid in the ceiling fucked me up with her voice (dub) and screams
Ice cream bus - im never eating ice cream again. Jokingly compared the driver to William afton fnaf in the beginning but he was somehow worse. The dad pushing the kid away jumpscared me, then horrified me, and I needed a break from the show
Hanging balloon - so absurd it was kinda funny. The nonlinear storytelling added a bit if spook as I slowly realized who was at the window but idk the concept was just funny to me. Also I was so happy someone finally showed up to a horror plot strapped until I saw the result. Sorry random Chad with a crossbow, wish you coulda helped…
Four x four walls - thought something horrific would happen outside and he wouldn’t hear it but it didn’t, thought soichi was famous for being scary but he wasnt, I think this was like a comic relief in episode form. No spook, kinda funny
The sandman’s lair - *laughs nervously* what the fuck. No clue what happened, why would you tape yourselves like that, let me see his dream form damnit, the nature of humanity is we reinvent homestuck etc
Intruder - these kids are based tbh. Balls of steel, don’t blame the redhead, just move on with their lives
Long hair in the attic - also based, i had wondered where her head had gone but i shoulda known by the title, that grinding sound pissed me off tho
Mold - thank. God. It was in black and white. I choose to believe its dust. Also idc about culture or taboo if your floor is coated in inches of ropes and pools of mold just wear your damn shoes. Jesus Christ
Library vision - this one felt like it was calling out all of my anxieties about losing the things and memories precious to me. Also 10/10 Sean chiplock that final recital of hell of thorns was incredible and spooky. Also what the fuck was the ending
Tomb town - im never driving again. Also just call the cops surely you get a reduced sentence for actually reporting the crime. Other than that not scary lol
Layers of terror - im never picking my skin again. god ALMIGHTY why did i bear witness to this. Fuck that mom bro she sucks. I was thinking about how the proportions of human anatomy change as you age and how a toddler with such short limbs and a thick torso could fit inside an adult but uh… then they answered my question. And then it got worse. Funnily enough the 2yo looked like a monster id design
The thing that drifted ashore - was this supposed to be scary…? Oh boy they turned into fish people and promptly fucked off good for them ig
Tomie • photo - wow what bitches lmfao. Idk why she has a face growing out of her scalp hut I didn’t need to see the removal process. Or how botched the removal process was. Based that the photographer just fuckin moved on. “Damnit the blood ruined my pictures :/“ incredible.
Unendurable labyrinth - probably woulda been scarier if they were lost for longer but to me it looked like they took five steps, found the brother, seven steps, “aaaah we’re lost,” two steps, “theyre looking at me!” then suddenly the mummies have eyes, fade to black. Cool
The bully - I was sooo ready for retribution, then I got reconciliation and got even happier, then it turned into child abuse and I wanted to kill a bitch
Alley - pfft idk if its based that she killed those kids or not but it was extra based that they got revenge on her lmao shoulda brought a ladder bro
Headless statue - Jesus fuck that’s gross. Stop it. Also smash the statues again it worked brilliantly earlier. Or maybe jump out a window idk
Whispering woman - mega based. The nervous girl gains support and confidence, the attendant is freed from her abusive friend, the abusive friend gets violently killed, its just wins all around
Soichi’s beloved pet - once again a comic relief episode but tbh it was pretty funny, soichi was a lot less hateable this time too!

Okay so, after the rollercoaster ride of today's Silent Hill transmission from Konami, I do have some preliminary thoughts.
(I'll link to the individual trailers as I go; the full transmission is like almost an hour long, I don't want to subject anybody to that lmao)
The full slate of media being worked on is at least 5 separate projects:
Silent Hill 2 Remake, a RE2-make style traditional remake developed by Polish studio Bloober Team (Layers of Fear, The Medium) in collaboration with the core remaining members of Team Silent, Masahiro Ito and Akira Yamaoka
Return to Silent Hill, a new film by the 2006 film's original director Christophe Gans and produced by Victor Hadida, his late brother Samuel Hadida's production partner, that largely follows the plot of Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill Ascension, some sort of livestreamed semi interactive evolving media production created as a partnership between Bad Robot (JJ Abrams' media company), dj2, Behaviour Interactive (creators of Dead by Daylight), and Genvid Software
Silent Hill Townfall, a mysterious character driven piece created by Annapurna Interactive (Stray, Kentucky Route Zero) and NoCode Games (Observation)
Silent Hill f, a title left deliberately vague, set in 1960s Japan and developed by the creator of j-horror landmark Higurashi: When They Cry, Ryukishi07
I have mixed feelings about all of these! I love the original developers and appreciate the depth of care and affection all these new partners have for the franchise--multiple people at each satellite company have stated how deeply formative they found the original games--but like... there's so much going on at one time here.
Out of all of these? I have the highest confidence in Townfall and f. Annapurna Interactive has shown (to me at least) that they understand ambience, the importance of quiet spaces and environmental storytelling, emotional nuance, and no fear of taking risks or being left field. That's EXACTLY what the franchise needs right now, after years of being trash trapped in the doldrums. Likewise, Ryukishi07 (whoever they are, single plural or otherwise) has a veteran pedigree in Japanese psychological horror, and could do a lot of good transforming the games into the new world with their talents. How much it ends up feeling silent hill y is up for debate, considering how juxtaposed their normal style is from the American cinematic homage Silent Hill normally reads as, but still.

With regards to the movie: I do like Christophe Gans, and think he's a competent filmmaker with an appreciation for the source materials and atmosphere that other directors might lack (such as MJ Bassett, the director who botched Revelation in 2012).... but. I simply don't trust the vision he's outlined in his recent interview with Konami to be a captivating movie. Why watch his movie at all? If Return to Silent Hill is going to be like they said, pretty much a straight adaptation of 2, they're not going to have the room to grow and develop from the source materials to make it feel like its own Thing the way the 2006 film managed.
I'm a bit of an outlier in that I did genuinely like the 2006 movie! Despite its problems with pacing and the corporate interference of adding the B plot with Sean Bean, and the flashbacks detailing Alessa's backstory being a bit mishandled (also likely due to upper management's demands of rewrites), the tone, the environments, and performances were really effective. It haunted me for quite a while after my first viewing, to the point where it helped develop my affinity for horror in general and the series of games in particular, which imo is a hallmark of a good movie! But the way Konami and Constantin Pictures have outlined their project for RtSH, I have no reason not to just skip it and watch a compilation of cutscenes from the game on YouTube instead and call it a day, or pony up for the remake, which is going to deliver the same story almost shot-for-shot.
I have no idea what they're doing with this Ascension bullshit. It's supposed to be interactive and crowd operated in a live setting, but like. How does that work here. This franchise has always been a very independent experience from the jump, and the only deviations have been utter failures (notably Book of Memories, a top-down roguelike co-op game on the PS Vita relentlessly hated by fans and critics). How do you translate the fear of isolation and claustrophobia and violence and the unknown into a livestream? I just don't see it being good honestly. I'm happy to be wrong! Please I hope I'm wrong here. But... considering "executive produced by JJ Abrams" has been the blood in the water for more than one esteemed franchise, because he can't fucking write his way out of a paper bag but people tell him he can, I just don't see it having the nuance or subtlety the brand needs.
youtube
The SH2 remake is just an utter wildcard, but I'm leaning towards "eh" at this point. I just think, like... we don't really need a film adaptation of 2 AND a remake. It's so redundant, telling the same story in the same ways, when 2 is already a beloved central pillar of horror gaming to begin with. There's so much potential and so many stories to work with in the franchise already! Or even an original screenplay set in the universe could be good too. But what sounds like a 1-1 adaptation of the original game is, well. Not what I want all that much, either from the movie side or the game side. I don't know whether I like the focus in the game so far, considering it's supposed to feel quite hazy and unsettling, while the trailer feels a bit too grounded and emotive. But it's hard to say this early whether that means they miss the mark or nail it in terms of atmosphere. The discourse is pretty evenly split from what I've seen. As a good sign: Masahiro Ito and Akira Yamaoka are both involved as core members of the SH2R team, which means creatively the Bloober Team should be on a comparatively tight leash with regards to the liberties they can take with the game's direction. Bad sign: apparently Bloober Team are known for bungling topics around mental illness in some of their work... and idk if you've ever played Silent Hill 2, but that's a pretty significant component of the title lmao.
youtube
Overall? My feelings are certainly mixed, but the fact that the series is being brought back to life after nearly a decade of silence and development hell? I'm glad. I certainly hope all of these end up good, but won't hold my breath and choke on it if I can help it. High hopes for f and Townfall, though. If any of these can make it, it's them. And as always, remember
"The fear of blood tends to create fear for the flesh"

Song I'm listening to: one of my two favorite tracks from the debut album of siraph (who also just put out a new ep i gotta jam), a group formed in part by former members of school food punishment, one of my fav bands. that unexpected break into a salsa vamp 2/3 of the way through always puts a grin on my face lol
Show im watching: aura battler dunbine with a friend (it's uh...extremely uneven and has been more boring than good for awhile), rewatch of the more recent dororo adaptation with a partner (still excellent), and the og 80s urusei yatsura solo off and on (kinda just waiting for the oshii/ito influence to really start showing itself since I'm still early on but it's cute)
Book i'm reading: aberration in the heartland of the real: the secret lives of timothy mcveigh by wendy s. painting. discovered via one of my fav podcasters, sean mctiernan (go listen to sf ultra and support his patreon), and while it's outside my usual wheelhouse I'm about ~100 pages in and finding it v interesting thus far! painting seems to have her head on straight and I admire the skill and clarity with which she navigates the accumulated bullshit surrounding the topic; strikes me as more or less "left" in approach if not necessarily like historical dialectical materialist or what have you
Current obsession: other than my crush (not anyone I know from here so dw lol), I guess making decals in armored core 6? I'm stuck at the end of chapter 1 boss fight against balteus and need to grind for money to buy more parts and create a new build but I've been putting it off lol
tagging @halftype @assaultmystic and @phallomedusa plus anyone else who sees this and wants to participate!

REPOST DO NOT REBLOG !!
Tumblr media
NAME :  sean!
PRONOUNS :  he / him
PREFERENCE  OF  COMMUNICATION : tumblr ims, but im also open to giving out my discord if we talk enough here first !
NAME  OF  MUSE(s) : i have FAR too many muses to list ( i may just have a problem lmao ) but i write dipper and mabel  (mabel is on @shootiinstars for anyone that doesnt follow her yet!), on my canon multi muse ( @calamityshrine ) i roleplay tomie ( junji ito’s tomie), yoshiki kishinuma (corpse party), merlin (bbc’s merlin), seiko shinohara (corpse party), and link & zelda of TLOZ breath of the wild. i also have two original character multimuses ( @stridshundar & @wickdcreatures ) with 14 original muses between the two of them, and a single original character muse @ambrosiian . all of my characters and blogs (including this one and mabels) have strong emphasis on horror, and the trauma / mental illness that can spawn from tragedy.
EXPERIENCE  /  HOW  LONG  (  MONTHS  /  YEARS? ) : my first tumblr rp blog was actually an ask blog created in early 2012, which has long since been converted into my main personal blog, but ive been seriously rping on tumblr since around 2016. i’ve been rping online pretty much since i was able to access the internet lmao
BEST  EXPERIENCE :   any experience with @ohfiendangelical and all of her various blogs has been the best experience <3 love writing with that bitch <3 she was the one that convinced me to start rping on tumblr and helped me SO much in the beginning by making me icons and teaching me the little photoshop tricks and whatnot. i’m really grateful that she did because this particular creative outlet is really fun and im having an ABSOLUTE blast
RP  PET  PEEVES  /  DEALBREAKERS :   1. PLEASE list your triggers if you have them, even if you think they might be “silly”. they ARENT silly, if it makes you upset please tell people, or if you dont tell people your triggers, dont get mad at them for not knowing. 2. i think everyone can agree to some extent that godmodding is. so annoying. minor godmodding like having your muse push mine out of the way makes sense, but i absolutely hate it when the muses are “suddenly omnipotent” to whats happening or what my muse is thinking without reason.
MUSE  PREFERENCES  FLUFF,    ANGST  OR  SMUT :  oh lord do i love angst and horror, fluff can get really boring really fast, and i think i would rather die than write smut LMAO i dont really write smut with ANY of my characters, not even my ocs.
PLOTS  OR  MEMES :   i’m usually more of a plotting kinda guy, sometimes the sentence memes will be a good place to start by other times they sit in my ask box collecting dust because i really have no idea how to answer them --- what im saying is plotting is easier on my little stinky smooth brain <3
LONG  OR  SHORT  REPLIES : i.... i am known to ramble so even if i said “medium” replies i think it would be considered lying LMAO
BEST TIME TO WRITE :    i write best in the evening/night, honestly i feel like my best writing comes right before or long after i was supposed to be in bed. better than that is early evening during a rainstorm, too bad california doesnt have many rainstorms 😭😭
ARE  YOU  LIKE  YOUR  MUSE(S) :   for eases sake im only going to be talking about my similarities with dipper and mabel, because i have WAY too many muses to list lmao. my similarities to mabel: i like to think i’m outgoing when i can muster it, im artistic and love to draw, glitter and the color pink have a stranglehold on me at all times honestly, and i too would love to wear sweaters all the time but i am not as strong as her and cant wear sweaters in the summer time. my similarities to dipper: i am a naturally very anxious person, always quick to overthink, and i too am very obsessed with the occult, though for different reasons! i, however, would NOT run head first into chasing the paranormal without doing VERY THOROUGH research on how to protect myself
TAGGED  BY  :   @cultleads thank you angel! <3
TAGGING  :  @themysterytri0 , @prophecylinked , @damagcdsouls , @inseparableduo , @crybabydemcn , @cryptculted , @promiseofdawn , @a-shy-mage , @tailedteeth
