#It's a THING that Clover should have been a druid
Note
For Clover: ✨ and because my weird little mortician brain wants to know all about everyone’s funeral whether they actually exist or not: 🌓
- @heylittleriotact
🌓 - What would your OC’s funeral be like? Would they prefer a tomb, cremation, or to be given back to the earth?
Okay so first thing you need to understand about Clover is that she's more Druid than Ranger, and her mother is a retired Cleric of Chauntea. She's also half wood Elf lmao.
She's very much a "return me to the earth" girly. Don't even put her in a coffin, she wants to nurture the land with her body. She wants her friends and family to gather to remember her fondly, not mourn. Don't cry because I'm gone, smile because you got to know me, type. There should be music and her favourite foods for everyone to enjoy.
Plant a tree or flowers or something to mark her grave, visit her often and have picnics there.
Honestly she's pretty chill about death as it is, seeing it as just the next part of life. And honestly, presuming this happens a century+ after the end of the game? She's literally fought Myrkul... she's not afraid of death

Witchcraft 101: 10 good luck charms and their origin
Tumblr media
Celeste vecteur créé par rawpixel.com - fr.freepik.com 🖤🍄🕸️🌿🪵🌙🕷️🦋🧹☕🔮
Down on your luck ? Things not going your way lately ? Need an extra boost of good luck and fortune to help you suceed ? Omens, charms, totems and spells have long been relied on for such purposes ! We all know well the old adages about lucky pennies, the old wives' tales about horseshoes and the stories about four leaf clovers.
Good luck charms and totems are extremely varied and there is just as many stories about them as representations of them. If you need a little boost of good luck and good fortune, here you have a list of some good luck harbingers in no particular order !
-Four leaf clovers: The druids of old Celtic Ireland believed four leaf clovers were able to ward off evil and bad luck, as they would allow one to see fairies, spirits and bad portents. Celtic druids would then carry one with them to protect themelves against misfortune and evil magic, and over time their meaning changed and became more associated with good luck and good fortune.
-Horseshoes: There is a debate over how and why horseshoes are lucky. Some people say they must be hung pointing up, others that it should point down and some that it doesn't make a difference. Horseshoes might have come to be associated with good luck thanks to Chaldeans, who saw in them a representation of the moon and moon goddesses, while others insist their lucky properties are caused by the fact they are made out of iron, which protects against fairies !
-Lucky pennies: Finding money laying around is always lucky, even if it is a single penny. The belief that finding a "lucky penny" brings good luck might have its origins in the ancient belief that metal is a gift of the gods, who would leave them in the path of those that they wanted to protect. The story says that finding the penny laying face up is extra lucky as that might mean you have extra fortune on the way. Finding a penny in your path is not the only way pennies are lucky, as you can toss them into wells or over your shoulder for wish fullfillment and manifestation !
-Dandelions: Dandelions are often connected to dreams and wishes but they are also said to bring good luck. Ancient belief says that if you pick up a dandelion and blow all of its seeds off while asking for a wish, that wish will come to you. In the past, dandelions in bloom were also gifted to newlywed couples to wish them good luck, a successful marriage and financial prosperity.
-Elephants: Many different cultures believe elephants will bring you good luck. According to the Chinese precept of feng shui, elephants represent wisdom, protection and good luck ! In Hinduism they represent Ganesha, the god of good luck, fortune and protection. Elephants are harbingers of those boons and positive energies: jewelry or clothing featuring them, and home decor such as elephant statues, will bring luck and positive energies to you.
-Rainbows: Rainbows have long been associated with good luck, hope and good fortune. This might be due to the Celtic belief that states that at the "other end of the rainbow" there was a pot of gold that originated it ! Leprechauns were said to hide gold at the end of rainbows for safe keeping, and should anyone stumble upon this gold they were free to keep it. That is why rainbows have come to be associated with good luck and fortune.
-Ladybugs: Ladybugs have come to be considered lucky because they are of great help to farmers. Those well acquainted with gardens and plants know that ladybugs are fierce predators and eat pests such as aphids, which destroy crops. Seeing ladybugs in your plants meant that aphids weren't eating them, which meant they would survive and probably produce a bountiful harvest !
-Tortoiseshell cats: Tortoiseshell cats (those with a fur that combines red and black) are said to be good luck in many different cultures. Celts believed that sheltering one would bring fortune upon your household, and Japan it was believed that boats that had a tortoiseshell cat would be protected from storms, shipwrecks and ghosts. Male tortoiseshells are very rare, so they are extra lucky !
-Acorns: Acorns are a symbol of good luck and fortune that are particularly dear to witches. In Celtic tradition, when witches would meet up for Sabbats and to carry rituals they would often exchange acorns with one another to let each other know they were in safe company. Getting an acorn handed to you meant you had been recognized as a witch and you were in the company of equals. In Greek mythology, the oak and its acorn were said to be fortunate as they were blessed by Zeus the almighty, and in Norse belief oaks (which are often the tallest in a forest and thus attract lightning) were associated by Thor, the god of lightning. After storms, druids would go out and collect acorns which were "miraculously and luckily untouched by the lightning".
-The Glückspilz (Amanita muscaria): Amanita muscaria is said to be particularly lucky in german folklore. This bright red capped mushroom with dainty white dots is a common Christmas ornament in Germany, where it is called the "lucky mushroom". This mushroom honours the beauty and prosperity of nature, and it is said to be lucky during Christmas and the turning of the year !
I hope you have enjoyed this short article. I am experimenting with this new format to give witches different ideas on how to use different symbols and charms in their spells. If you enjoyed it let me know and I will be more than happy to make a part 2 !

a little gift for @silverdecepticon93 for their amazing writing. some klarion content!
written by Persephone. Anastasia did some editing and helped me write Klarion correctly. It's a bit of a slow burn, and I probably got some story facts wrong, but I hope you enjoy!

It's not that the weather wasn't pleasurable, it was, really. the sun was out, reflecting off the oceans subtle waves and warming the grey pavement just enough for beach-goers with no shoes to begin to hop from foot to foot. The wind was perfect, swaying the tall palm trees that lined the coastal road, every now and again, causing a hat to fly off in its cool breeze, making it's owner run after it with calls of protest. A girl in her late teens leaned back on a uncomfortably tacky faux beach chair just outside the open air cafe. Her hair moved slowly, partially from the outside breeze and partially from the squeaking old metal fan making slow rotations just inside the door. It blew no dust, so it was clearly well used considering the heat.
Happy Harbour seemed just that, happy. Everything had been calm the past few months, villain attacks were incredibly low, no major plots had been uncovered, and the group known as The Light was seemingly inactive after the league and teams triumph over them. The lack of attacks had Robin and Kaldur on edge anticipating something being planned in the shadows, but Y/n, Artemis, Megan and Wally had taken the opportunity to enjoy Rhode Island for what it was. In the ginger speedsters words, a paradise just waiting to be explored.
Zatanna Zatura was across the round table from Y/n, in casual clothes with a black baseball cap and a vanilla milkshake in hand, sipping on the straw slowly. Y/n herself had her favourite flavor smoothie resting on the table, her phone in hand as the camera on the device recorded what was happening in the small grass patch to their left. Wallace West swore on his life that he had landed a back flip the day before, which the rest of his friends refused to believe. In trying to prove his ability, he was attracting some strange stares from passers by, and rather ice filled glare from a mother who corralled her three kids, most likely in their early preteens, away, hurriedly muttering about 'unethical teenager'. Quite an interesting thing to be thrown their way, but the teen heroes had had worse hurled at them in their exploits as protectors of justice.
"Wally" Megan laughed, a short snort escaping her lips as she watched the boy try to land another flip. " You're going to break something". The Martian was resting on the grass, watching what was happening unfurl.
"cheers to that! please do!" Artemis' words were filled with sarcasm. The blonde teen making her way towards the table and picking up her drink to take a sip. Wally dropped to the ground again and sprawled out on the grass, crushing the green blades under his body. Y/n cringed slightly.
"you girls are no fun, even Connor is more fun to hang out with, at least he encourages me to improve my wicked moves" Wally pulled himself to his feet with a bounce and brushing off his pants with little success, the mucky dew soaked dirt already staining them brown at the knees. Y/n was glad he did his own laundry, she didn't want to be the one to wash those stains out. The girl stopped the video on her phone with the press of a button, dropping her hand to her side and turning the object off.
"I'd like to argue with that" Connor complained, he seemed to have appeared out of no where, walking towards them, ebony shirt still sporting the superman signal. He seemed a little happier today, perhaps it was the immaculate weather. Y/n reckoned it could put anyone in a good mood, even Connor, who hadn't been as happy has he could have been lately. His relationship with Megan had be strained.
"The man, the myth, the legend, how could you betray me my main man? You're really going to let the girls pick on your best friend?" Wallys drama queen was showing as he rested a hand on his head in a damsel in distress motion.
"Wolf is my best friend, you are" Connor faked a thoughtful expression, "an unfortunate acquaintance". Y/n could see the joking sparkle in Connors eyes. It was strange. Strange, but good. He deserved some joy in these darker days. "anyways, the reason I'm here for two reasons, reason one being because Robin decided to have an identity crisis, he's changing his name"
"Please tell me it's not another bird, I don't want it to be a bird" Artemis groaned, dropping heavily into one of the chairs. It groaned in protest from the sudden and violent weight.
"I don't know what he's gone with, but second reason I'm here is because we've got a new team member, Batman just made a visit and brought someone with him-"
"Batman was at the cave! and you didn't tell me! is he still there?" Wally began to vibrate from excitement, sparks ran down his arms and legs.
"When I left he was, bu-". Wally was gone in a literal flash, leaving the remaining team looking around frantically, glade the citizens of Happy Harbour seemed content in being too interested in their own lives to notice a super-powered boy and his friends.
"we should probably make sure he doesn't break anything, and welcome the new team member huh?" Zatanna said with a sigh, getting to her feet and stretching her arms up, elbows cracking slightly. As the group collected their drinks, waving goodbye to the cafes owner, who they knew well due to their frequent return to the place, Y/n saw something that peaked her interest, making the girl pause and turn towards it.
"Y/n, you coming or what girl?" Zatanna called out. The group somehow was a good ways away from her now, standing, ready to cross the pedestrian crossing at the coastal road. The curious frown on her face must have given something away.
"um, I'll catch up, yeah? say hi to the newbie for me?" the uncertainty in her voice made Zatanna pause, but nod, turning back just in time to walk with the others across the road.
Turning back towards the curiosity, it stared at her with dark eyes, watching her movement. Y/n walked over and bent down, petting the feline behind it's ears, coaxing a purr from the familiar cat-daemon.
"Hello Teekl" the teen greeted, "what are you doing here?" her hand continued to pet the creature, before it shook it's head, pushing your hand away with the action and going to work on licking its paw. Cats were always strange, but she supposed their sudden mood changed were due to their nature.
"I feel like you're just in this for the cute cat" the voice was monotonous and Y/n recognised it immediately. Turning her head slightly, she spied the source of the voice. He looked different, slightly older, taller, and dressed in more civilian esque clothing. Perhaps to attempt to blend in with the surrounding crowds of people.
"The cats a bonus" Y/n gave one final pet to Teekl before walking to the table she was sitting at previously, Klarion Bleak now occupying Zatannas previous location. "How are you? I haven't seen you since the whole light thing". I'd been about five months and the league was still recovering. Klarion got a sour look on his face, pausing, he fiddled with the hem of his shirt, a neat black button up dress shirt. He looked, perplexed.
"I've been keeping my head down I guess, Savage lose his mind after we lost, been hounding anyone who talks to about it" the strange look remained on his face. "I've been banned from annoying the justice brats, no offence, until he comes up with something new"
Y/n dismissed the nickname for her team and frowned herself. "Robins noticed, it's got him freaked out, running crazy circles trying to figure out what Vandal Savage is planning" a small grin rose on her face. Klarion noticed movement, seeing small clovers begin to crawl their way out of the cracks in the pavement. That caused the small smile that few saw to appear.
"your magic is getting better". That was how they met. Before the team. Both of them were young magic users, each pulled down a different road. One good, One evil. But between them there was balance, peace. Order and Chaos meeting in the middle for a calm chat and shared news on a sunny day.
"I've been getting better at it, but there's always room for more practice as Aqualad says" Y/n laughed. Silence entered their conversation. It wasn't awkward however, as it sometimes was among friends or co workers. It was a comfortable silence of enjoying a summers day without the chaos of the world. It be nice if things stayed like that, balanced, forever. But soon, Unfortunately, their friendship would burn and break. Being torn to their sides, ripped from the comforting friendship, forced to fight each other to prove loyalty to each side. No. Order and Chaos were balanced, but wars tended to tip that scale and break it. In the process, something much more important was shattered.

the more I think about the saving Anne quests the more dissatisfied I get
why weren’t we armed to the teeth with every magical item we have to protect ourselves? we knew thought Dark Core wasn’t going to give up Anne without a fight, we knew thought they’d be waiting, so why didn’t we have our rune wand and fragment of Aideen’s light? Why did we go into Pandoria unprepared?
But more importantly, we did have our horse. Which brings up why wasn’t our horse with us when we went back in to get Alex? the only reason we didn’t get back up on our horse was because we had to be helpless to watch Elizabeth die and frankly...?
that’s so...
Tumblr media
Like canonically the druids and soul riders are tragically underprepared for anything and everything, us going in without any supplies and without us receiving any offensive or defensive training just lines up with the druids being awful at fighting a war or training their agents or using anything effectively (if you’re gonna have child soldiers commit to it, don’t half heartedly train them and let them nearly murder people because you neglected to train them)
So I’ll let that part slide with just a grumble and a
Tumblr media
But our horse? Our horse backs us up. Our horse does whatever it needs to do for us, be it sneak into Dark Core for us or jump off an oil rig into the ocean and sprout wings. It comes when we need it.
So why didn’t we jump up on our horse when Elizabeth charged back in to get Alex? Why didn’t our horse follow us? What stopped our horse from going “that’s my human I’m protecting my human get out of my way” and running after us? Because for some reason Elizabeth had to die, so we had to be powerless to stop it.
and the hilarious thing is, I wasn’t even sad when Elizabeth died because I immediately thought of the clover. I know that quest affected a lot of people but I just... “oh we’ve got a wish granting clover that we haven’t used on Fripp or Concorde, I guess we’ll be using it on Elizabeth, because why else would we hold off on using a wish granting clover that could have healed Fripp???”
especially since “we’ll bring her back” is a dialogue option with Alex.
and yet I have a feeling SSO will keep the clover for something else and Elizabeth will be perma-dead. idk maybe this is so they can introduce a new druid leader (why Elizabeth has to be out of the way idk???)
Tumblr media
in all of this I can only hope that getting Anne back hurts us. If Dark Core let her go and Anne doesn’t end up hurting the soul riders/druids in some way then
Tumblr media
I want the villains in sso to be competent. Letting go of Anne with a distraction fight either means they are 1 - setting us up with Anne somehow or 2 - really that incompetent as an enemy.
I also want there to be a reason why we couldn’t save Elizabeth. Tell me why my horse didn’t come with me. Tell me why the game made me powerless.
I acknowledge there is no way for SSO to win with me in this scenario, if they don’t use the clover for Elizabeth I’ll be frustrated they made us powerless to save her then gave us a wish granting object and still made us unable to save her. If SSO does use the clover to save Elizabeth great she’s back I still don’t trust her and we just wasted an incredibly valuable object on someone we should have been able to save in the first place but were unable to save because of Alex Suffering Plot Reasons I guess idk.

The entire party continues to get hard...in different ways
Picking up right where we left off in the square (munching on pretzels), the party returned to the temple to ask Winstrock’s new “friend” if she could recommend a lawyer who understands the relevant law to their predicament, and hopefully dwarvish culture as well. It turned out her brother, Huavraem, is just such a lawyer and his offices are nearby, close to Castle Never. However, she also mentioned that one of her acolytes, Modrouth, was overdue to return from assisting with a research expedition off to the northeast by the volcano Mount Hotenow. The party agreed to set off in that direction to see what might have happened.
Tumblr media
Enlisting Huavraem’s services, they deputized him to act on their behalf and ensure they were protected. Before setting out, however, they did make the rounds of the city searching for new armor for Winstrock. Soliciting recommendations from Theryis and Toram, they visited many shops but were unable to find affordable armor. They did, however, purchase a dozen potions of healing from Wahim the apothecary using their letter of credit, despite Ander’s beginning to wonder just how much they would be able to get away with in using that document.
Tumblr media
They decided to rest back in the temple for the night. Sleep was only mildly interrupted by the rhythmic squeaking of springs, and breakfast was only slightly awkward the next morning.
Tumblr media
Finally they exited the north gate of the city near Vellgard Manor and began tracing the steps taken by the research expedition. Along the way, they ran into a pair of bronze dragon wyrmlings.
Tumblr media
Sha’shi’ was able to speak with them in draconic and convince them that they intended no harm. The wyrmlings did warn them to look out for dangerous gnolls in the area.
Sure enough, they soon came across some dead horses and discovered the tracks of a gnoll war band heading off into the woods. Following this trail, they came across a clearing containing numerous gnolls and an unknown beast of some kind chained up very near the dwarf they were intending to rescue and two other women.
They took a moment to concoct a plan: Daskan would summon his bears at the edge of the clearing at the exact moment Sha’shi’ used another fireball on the gnolls. Ander and Droop would circle around near the captives and rush in to untie and pull them away from the…thing…in the back. Sedoris would rush in with Daskan and Winstrock to mop up the remaining gnolls, allowing them to hopefully then surround and contain the other entity.
Tumblr media
The first part of the plan went off without a hitch, perhaps even better than intended; the bears were able to mop up the gnolls before the rest even entered the clearing. The demon in the back, which turned out to be a vicious shoosoova, was on a fairly long chain and was more resilient and potent than anticipated. As the battle dragged on, they wondered if they had perhaps bitten off more than they could chew.
Sedoris, frustrated that she didn’t feel like she was accomplishing much in combat, charged forward to meet the demon head on. She attracted its attention as a result and suffered a painful swipe of its claws. It was then that she summoned a powerful, hellish rebuke, in her rage turning the demon to a pillar of fire and reducing it to a pile of ash. The rest of the party stood there in shock, evidently revisiting their assessment of their newest member and vowing to never, ever piss her off.
Tumblr media
Gnolls do not value treasure like most races, but they did discover one of them was wearing mithral armor that Ander claimed, greatly increasing his defenses while its impossible lightness would not hinder his stealthiness as a rogue.
Tumblr media
Returning with their rescued captives (unfortunately the male human who had been with the group was eaten by the shoosoova before they arrived), they were startled to bump into a pair of yuan-ti abominations. Sha’shi’ to the rescue again! As a yuan-ti pureblood, she was able to make the proper gestures of respect and deference, presenting them with a large diamond and begging their leave to return to Neverwinter. Her knowledge of yuan-ti culture served them well and helped avoid a bloody confrontation.
Tumblr media
Winstrock took the lead upon re-entering the temple, playing up his part in the heroic rescue. Androsli presented him with a greater healing potion and a lucky four leaf clover.
They returned to the square outside (for another quick pretzel) and ran into another bard, a human named Ristaer who was an old acquaintance of Sedoris. It seemed he was mugged after leaving The Fallen Tower, the tavern in the River District (controlled by the Many-Arrows Orcs). His beloved lute, his only means of earning a living, was stolen, along with the 10 gp he had earned that day.
Tumblr media
The party agreed to investigate and find out what became of the lute.
They first set off to the Protector’s Enclave and sought out The Mute Lute, the store where they knew the lute had been crafted, where they thought the owner might know more about where lutes are bought and sold in the city. The ancient luthier, Rebeth Laeryyryn, was not much help, but Sedoris was sorely tempted by the countless instruments hanging on the walls. They soon discovered why it was called The Mute Lute when, screwing around with some instruments, Rebeth cast a powerful spell to silence all sounds within the shop.
Tumblr media
With no real leads, they decided to head to The Fallen Tower. They had Sedoris lead the way with the others lurking at a distance, hoping to bait the same bandits into trying to rob her. This was unsuccessful, so she entered the tavern and spoke with the barkeep who was alarmed to learn of Ristaer’s mugging. He suggested that there was a pawn shop near the river that was known to fence stolen goods, so the party regrouped and head off in that direction.
Tumblr media
They entered, with Daskan in the form of a cat, and discovered that there was a lute (which Sedoris recognized as Ristaer’s) for sale. They tried to interrogate him about its origin, only to be rebuffed. Daskan tried breaking things on shelves and eventually lunging at the orc’s face with his cat claws. Unfortunately, Hagub had an axe under the counter which he swung into the cat, causing Daskan to revert to his lizardfolk form.
Tumblr media
From there, however, they again used their intimidating tiefling’s presence, with the backup of an ominously quiet yuan-ti, to intimidate Hagub into betraying the source of the lute as an orc named Yar, as well as surrendering the lute to Sedoris. They went straight from this pawn shop to the Cloak Tower where Vansi Bloodscar, leader of the Many-Arrows Orcs, made his headquarters. He was not pleased to hear about this threat to the very fragile peace he was maintaining with the rest of the city. He gave them 20 gp to reimburse Ristaer with interest for his suffering, and vowed that Yar and his group would be hunted down and dealt with. Ristaer was overjoyed to be reunited with his beloved lute when they returned to the temple.
Tumblr media
From there, they decided to make another visit to Thundertree, recalling that Reidoth knows the entire Sword Coast like the back of his hand; perhaps he would recognize some of the symbols on their map fragments and provide some clue as to what they mean.
Soon after leaving the city again, they stopped as they were approached by two hulking beasts who immediately attacked. They were unsure of how dangerous bulettes could be, but learned very quickly when one leapt forward to trample Daskan and incapacitate him in a single hit.
Tumblr media
Sedoris rushed to his rescue while the rest of the party quickly spread out to make it harder to catch multiple people with one leap. The battle dragged on for quite some time, but eventually they emerged victorious.
Thinking they had gotten their bad luck of of the way, they were not happy to soon attract the notice of two large, metallic-looking creatures resembling huge bulls. These turned out to be gorgons, which they did not realize in time to avoid clustering together for their petrifying breath weapons. They noticed with great alarm that Droop and Sedoris were beginning to turn to stone.
Tumblr media
While Sedoris soon shook off the effects, perhaps her skills as a healer giving her some protection, poor Droop was not so lucky. The stone crept over his little goblin body, turning him to a statue with a look of unfathomable terror frozen on his tiny face.
Tumblr media
Sha’shi’ stood between her petrified protege and the gorgons, unleashing the full fury of her magic. Daskan similarly began to heat the metal armor plates and bake the gorgons in their own skin, while Ander found gaps in the plates through which he could poke his rapier. Ander scored the killing blow on both gorgons with this technique before they could unleash their petrifying breath again, but it was too late for Droop.
Tumblr media
Carrying the statue with them, they continued the short distance to Thundertree. They left the status with Ander and Winstrock, who they thought Reidoth might not be too pleased to see, given their behavior last time, and Sedoris, Daskan, and Sha’shi’ approached Reidoth’s house. He was not pleased to see them initially but came around quickly when they told him the tale of meeting Venomfang again and finishing him off, after which he agreed to help them.
The map, it seemed, was of an area he knew well in the Starmetal Hills on the other side of the Neverwinter Wood. The symbols on the map corresponded to a configuration of geological formations in the desert, including a large, delicate stone arch. One of the symbols, however, didn’t correspond with anything he remembered, but they should be able to track it down using the other landmarks as reference points to figure out the general location.
Tumblr media
Reidoth did not understand the Deep Speech writing, though.
Fortunately, as a high level druid, he also knew a greater restoration spell which could restore Droop to normal. Daskan ran off to retrieve their fallen friend (cleaning off the graffiti Ander and Winstrock had scribbled on his face), and presented him to Reidoth. The spell would consume a large amount of diamond dust, so Sha’shi’ presented him with the other large diamond she was carrying, willing to give anything to save her sidekick. He took the diamond in payment and to replenish his stocks, as he then used his entire stock of pre-ground diamond dust to perform the ritual. It succeeded, and Droop was restored!
Tumblr media
With this new information in hand, they journeyed back to Neverwinter to check in with Allis Lhyssich, whom they had met in the course of Winstrock’s quest for new armor and knew to be the only maker of weapons forged from starmetal; perhaps he might have more information for them.
The return journey was uneventful, though they observed a brontosaurus drinking across the river and Daskan kept up a running commentary of new animals he spotted. Unfortunately, Allis did not have much more information for them, but he did at least recognize the stone arch landmark, so he was able to point out the more specific area of the Starmetal Hills where it is located.
Tumblr media
As prepared as they could be, they returned to the temple to plan their route to the hills and rest, preparing to head back out on the road the following day. If they could travel quickly, they had just enough time to get to the hills, spend a few days exploring, and return just before the supply convoy would be ready to return to Phandalin.

About the time Mae left Virkove for a year to train and become a bonafide handsome druid man better at what he wants to be and do.
Homegirl Friday Lars’ perspective. XD
She’s known the day would come for weeks and weeks now, but it’s still with something of a heavy heart that she drags herself out of bed in the morning. It’s bright out, and fairly warm for Northern weather, and the breath of spring brings with it the light fragrance of the earliest blooms. No doubt Cel would be pleased with them.
The Naveau house is shrouded in activity, the family engrossed in a flurry of activity. Mae is nowhere to be found; she figures he’s busy with the remnants of his packing, and decides not to bother him. He doesn’t need me any more, he’s got better teachers to train with, waiting for him in Scosglen. She’s happy for him, but she knows that the cold pit in her stomach is a sign of envy, and of abandonment. No, Lars, he’s not abandoning you or his family. He’s wanted this for so long, and he deserves this. A chance to learn what he wants, a chance to be who he is, without the trappings of expectation.
She finds Cel in the kitchen, elbow-deep in snacks, dried foods, and oiled papers. They say nothing, sharing sentiment through the brief grasping of one another’s hands, a gentle squeeze, and a vague sort of smile. Together, they pack up the food, and ever so often, Lars finds herself plucking blooms from the small vase of flowers that decorate the table, and pressing the tiny, pretty things into the wrappings. Dandelions and tiny clovers make her smile.
Over the course of the morning, Mae’s family dart in and out of the kitchen, picking at the food and sharing their thoughts on the impending trip. The twins are of two minds at the same time, at once excited and unhappy to be missing their brother for so long. Cel is concerned; Theone is envious, and spends the morning arguing with Tychol about why she should be allowed to go with him too. Ceth and Iliev are both excited, and leave express orders for Mae to document every new herb and healing method he finds in the Druidic lands.
She knows Aunt Chryse approves, and is excited for her son’s travels. But it is Uncle Lochi’s reaction that she looks forward to most of all. Over the course of the morning, he moves between the kitchen and Mae’s room, Kyri fast on his heels. He dotes on Cel, patting his daughter on the cheek each time he comes in, and she laughs, passing him bits of shortbread between each affectionate squeeze of the shoulder.
He does not even like shortbreads, Lars knows. But she understands that these are the things a father does for his daughter; he protects her feelings, enjoys what she makes, loves her with all his heart, as her own father does. As harsh and overbearing as he had been with Mae, Lars knows she cannot fault him as the father of her best friend. He does it for the good of his family, she thinks. He only wants Mae to be excellent.
For his part, Uncle Lochi tries – heavens, he tries, and even an outsider like her can see it. Mae had told her about their talk, those expressive, warm eyes brightening at the mention of how his father had apologised as they’d discussed the prospect of Scosglen. Scosglen, Lars! He’d been so excited; he’d grabbed her by the hands, that day of their last session together, spinning her around in the training grounds as laughter filled the air. Scosglen, where I can learn, and make more friends, meet more people, he’d said. Later, Uncle Lochi had thanked her for training with his son, expressed his apologies for the sore beatings she’d taken as a result of the magic. She’d laughed it off.
But it has only been a week since they had stopped training together, and already, she misses him. Her brothers are too busy fighting one another and none of the other young men want to bruise or scar the General’s daughter. And with Mae bound for Scosglen, she finds herself at a loss.
She tells herself it is merely this, the loss of a training partner, and not the other thing that has festered in her heart over the past years. How long has it been? Since that night, Lars?
Cel pulls her from her thoughts. It’s time, she says, and the sun is high in the sky. The horse is packed and ready, and so is the young druid. She runs out with his cousins, hand-in-hand with Cel, and waits her turn as he hugs his family in turn. He lingers with Cel, and presses his lips to her forehead for several seconds longer, his smile a tender, gentle thing. Uncle Lochi holds his shoulders, and though both his face and voice are impassive, Lars can tell he is proud, and a little bit bereft. Her father shakes his hand, and the two are broad grins and good cheer, and she thinks, not for the first time, that Mae is the son her father never had. It tears at her a little to think how much her own brothers must hurt her aging father with their indifference, and how he must hurt them in return.
When Mae comes up to her, it’s with a bounce, a spring in the step, and happiness in his eyes. I’ll write, so you write too, Lars, he says, and she can only nod and smile in return. Let me go too, she thinks. But it is not her place, nor is it her time, and so she tells him that she will train hard in his absence. When I get back, you’ll be taller and even stronger, he tells her. Don’t wait that long to get back, she retorts. Don’t forget us. Don’t forget me.
She watches him as he rides away, his back getting smaller and smaller until he is just a tiny speck upon the slopes close by the gates. There, he turns back, and she barely makes out his arm as he raises it to wave, and knows he is smiling that smile. And then he is gone, and the training grounds are empty once more.
She runs through new training partners like a wild animal in hunt. They are not fast enough, they lack the tenacity, they are afraid to hurt her. News comes from Scosglen, and she is overjoyed to hear that Mae is improving himself in every way. New teachers school him every week, and he tells her that it is the plan until they find one whose love affair with nature is similar. I have to be stronger when he returns, she tells herself, but how, if no one will train properly with me?
Daddy steps up. It is strange, at first, and she knows he holds himself back most days, but there is none of the yielding she is used to with the other boys, and he is not afraid to knock her off her feet. After, he is there to pick her back up, and mummy makes sure there is salve and ointment for the worst of their wounds. The first time she manages to bring him to the ground, he spends the evening boasting to her brothers about what she has accomplished. The pair of them consent to join in their training sessions the next day.
Eventually, she ceases to feel envious for her faraway friend. He is out there making something of himself, she thinks. He is becoming better. He is happy.
She’s grateful for it, but still, she misses him. And eventually, she accepts the why of it.
She accepts it’s because she loves him.

Eve’s Diary - Entry #54
Tumblr media
Date: 18th of March, 2020
Dear Diary,
It's the time of year where the daffodils and narcissus start to bloom, and pop up everywhere. They’re… perennials? I think it’s spelled. And their seeds are shaped like bulbs. Did you know that narcissus is my birth flower? And elder trees are my birth tree. My birthstones are blue topaz, tanzanite, and turquoise, but I don’t like those gems so much. I wish it were amethyst or rose quartz or… opal would be lovely. Fire opal. Anyways, what was I saying?
Today was St. Patrick's day! It’s been one year since I met Bonnie - well, I already knew her, but formally met - and one year since I watched her cast green sparks on that man to make him fall in the snow! That was a fun day. I can’t believe how much I’ve written in you, it’s a little nuts really.
To celebrate the holiday, Ressy and I walked around the grounds to find four leaf clovers. We found quite a few, actually! I’ve pressed some into this… er… you? Between the pages. It was fun to hunt around for them, even if it was pretty muddy.
Speaking of Ressy, my dad sent me one of his old, old dungeons and dragons books, and a set of used dice. Said he was about my age when he started playing, and that we’ll probably have a group in the summertime! So Ressy and I went and made our own minis and stuff in the artificer room and had a little mini campaign! We played for hours and honestly I think we missed a class or two.
It was this dungeon where we had to basically learn some magic and solve this mystery, we both played mages and walked around this castle doing puzzles and stuff. It was so much fun, and we even invented a potion of our own with a bunch of cute sounding ingredients! I hope I can invite her to the group my dad wants to have in the summer. Anyways, we finished the little mini campaign we had over two days, and I kind of miss it already. I think I might make a bard or a druid sometime, or maybe a warlock… Dad says I should stick with a simpler class like fighter, though. I’m not sure. We’ll see!
Ostara is in a couple days. It’ll be on Thursday. I’m not sure how I want to celebrate it this year. Maybe I’ll just eat a lot of eggs in the morning? That doesn’t sound so fun, though. I like eggs and all but I wanna do something… to actually celebrate it. Maybe I’ll talk to Dracheblume or Durmoney about starting my own plant project, and having a plant to grow that I can keep in my dorm!
I’ve been also exercising more lately. Trying to run in the mornings on the pitch when the doors are unlocked. But it’s hard! I get tired so quick and I feel like I’m dying or something. But I want to be more in shape for quidditch! I hear people say that they can’t drink pumpkin juice or have sweets or anything if they wanna stay fit, so I… I don’t know, I don’t think I can give up sweets. I love baking and I love eating pastries! I love quidditch too, though…
Sometimes I wish I could just grow big wings. I know I’ve talked about wanting to be a fairy, but I think it’d be cool to have huge, feathery, powerful wings. Carry me everywhere but it’d still be exercise just… flying exercise. Fun exercise. Wonder if magic could give me some?
As for what’s actually happened in the past few days, well, today I made one of those enchanted pumpkin friends Bonnie had this autumn in Artificer club! A punkeen. He seems to like sharp things and he can be very loud. I’ve been trying to keep the sharp things away from him. I’ve also been walking around with my PMRA a lot, and it’s like having a friend with me all the time but the friend plays music instead of talking. He’s fun. He likes to dance.
In Dueling Club, Bonnie and the Head Boy Cary explained that they’ll be doing a competition of sorts for who can win duels and such, and have different prizes and categories and stuff. The most exciting part about it is that the competition will be themed as the ‘Summer Faerie Court.’ Isn’t that the most romantic and magical thing you’ve ever heard of? Maybe I can get some nicer fairy wings made to wear to it! I don’t think I’ll place for anything, I haven’t won a duel yet except for that one against Aures, but I’m excited to be there anyways!
In Defense Against the Dark Arts, Lane has been speaking to us about patronuses and the older students have been practicing them. I wonder what my patronus will be… I adore rabbits and frogs, and horses and mice and rats… And bears. Chickens, cows. I love lots of animals. I just don’t know what mine would be. An owl? No, I don’t think that’s right… What if it’s something silly like… Like a naked mole rat or something. Not that I have anything against those! Or what if it’s something cool like a unicorn or a dragon… or a phoenix? I’m not sure. I should ask some of the older students what their patronuses are. I bet Bonnie’s is something really cool.
Talula’s birthday happened, and she had a star-themed party in the astronomy tower. There were a lot of people there and it looked really pretty. Someone got paint all over the place… I think it was Ressy, actually, but it was hard to tell, my glasses got smudged in the paint. We ate cake and played some games and it was a good time! I gave her this pretty bottle I found. It was shaped like a heart and had this floral sort of design on it.
There is one bad thing that happened this week, too. On Sunday, I was running up and down the stairs for exercise and such, when I bumped into this Slytherin girl, Abigail Bluetooth. She ended up falling off of the stairs, and would’ve fallen to the ground if Aloy hadn’t caught her. It was terrifying, she was hanging off the ledge and this moving staircase was gonna like crush their hands or something if they hadn’t moved in time. I managed to successfully cast the levitation charm to lift her shirt by the neck enough to help Aloy pull her up, and she was fine it was just… terrifying. She could’ve died. I could’ve killed her. Because I was being stupid and wasn’t paying attention! I’m still trying to figure out a way to make it up to her, but what says, ‘Sorry for almost killing you for a really dumb reason?’
Anyways, that’s about it. I’m sleepy and it’s technically not St. Patrick’s day anymore. I should really stop staying up so late.
Much love, Everly

Rebecca finds Concorde, Dark Core unfinds Concorde.
(7/11/2018 update fic) (continues from Setting Up A Circus (Again))
“Anne is going to be pissed,” Rebecca muttered when she rounded the corner of the maze and finally saw Concorde for the first time.
“Any chance you didn’t die and just got foalified for easy handling?” Rebecca asked more to herself than the foal, reaching out to touch the colt. Xin didn’t let her, taking her and the rest to see Ydris inside the circus tent. She got her hopes up when Ydris said he was waiting for her, until she realized he still did not recognize her.
Rebecca remained silent during the monologuing, annoyed that Linda cut off Ydris’ explanation of Garnok. It concerned her, Linda of all people should have been open to learning new perspectives. Had Linda been conditioned to reject all information of Garnok that wasn’t from the druids? Or was she so set that she knew the truth, even to insult the person holding Concorde hostage?
It took every ounce of self control to not squeal and clap her hands when Ydris began to explain Garnok and Pandoria. Oh it was terrible to be sure, the druids were no doubt responsible for banishing Garnok to Pandoria, or at least keeping him there, meaning that Pandorians saw the druids as the enemy. That would be an issue. But finding out Garnok was not from Pandoria to begin with? That led to a whole new set of fascinating questions!
Her happy thoughts of theories and puzzles were cut short by a mocking apology from Ydris directed at her.
“Forgive me, my sweet. I promise this won’t hurt… much.”
Rebecca had a feeling she was going to be turned into something.
Sure enough it felt familiar, and didn’t hurt a bit. Had this been the first time she was turned into a horse it probably would have freaked her out, but Ydris had done this before. Even if he didn’t remember.
Rebecca tossed her head and shook, adjusting to her horse body, and noticed a second man standing with Ydris. She snorted a laugh and played along with Ydris’ race.
“Uh,” Ydris glanced at the dark man standing next to him in a familiar jacket.
“You really don’t remember, do you?” Midnightwarrior asked, smirking and raising an eyebrow before he looked around. Human eyes saw so many more colors, and he enjoyed a chance to see the world as Rebecca did.
“Where did you get those clothes?” Ydris asked, only half paying attention to the race now.
“You let me keep them once I learned how to get them on. I’m just glad I didn’t transform naked this time,” Midnightwarrior gave a sardonic grin, “the clothes bringing anything back?”
“Who are you?” Ydris demanded.
“Was it the druids that got to you? Did they wipe your mind for teaching us?” Midnightwarrior didn’t answer, asking his own questions instead.
Before Ydris could fumble an answer the race ended, the golden mare crossing the finish line and triggering the teleportation spell that put them all back inside the circus.
Rebecca tossed her head and trotted over to Ydris and Midnightwarrior, whickering and nuzzling the dark man.
“You look different this time,” Midnightwarrior commented, noting her color change.
At that point Ydris realized that Rebecca’s horse was not standing in the circus tent, and connected the dots. An unsettling sensation wriggled at the back of his mind, near the base of his skull, as he studied Rebecca.
The Bobcat Girls had all transformed into colors that roughly matched their human forms, Ydris had to make them all into matching white horses. Rebecca should have been the same, yet she had turned out completely gold. A glance back at Rebecca’s horse-turned-human and the wriggling sensation dropped into his stomach, the human turned so dark he was a void cloaked in clothes.
“Turn her back!” Justin shouted, Linda yelling in agreement.
Rebecca neighed and took off with a high stepping trot, tossing her head and stepping around Justin and Linda.
“You look scared,” Midnightwarrior muttered to Ydris, smirking at the taller man. But he was back to normal human colors.
“She seems quite content,” Ydris declared to Justin, concealing his confusion behind a showman’s mask.
Rebecca trotted back over to Ydris and Midnightwarrior, playfully taking Ydris’ hat and putting it on Midnightwarrior.
“You make a wonderful horse. Are you sure you want me to change you back?” Rebecca blew in his face as an answer, “Very well. I am a man of my word.”
Ydris was put off by the fact that he was not the one to change them back, as he moved his hand to cast the spell there was a flash and the pair were in their original bodies.
They were showing off. Trying to show him something, but not the other two humans present. So, Ydris was not the only one putting on a performance. He could play along.
“Poor Zee. I warned her that you would put up a fight. I just hope her pride will heal before opening night,” Ydris noticed the look of interest on Rebecca’s face. The girl certainly was curious.
“As for Loretta and my other stars, I am supremely disappointed. Perhaps they would be more effective as carousel horses. Round and round, up and down! Wouldn’t that be delightful?” he didn’t let them answer his rhetorical question, banishing the intruders from his circus.
With his audience gone he bit his lip before he retrieved his fallen hat. He was glad Midnightwarrior hadn’t trotted out with it. To his embarrassment he jerked back in surprise when a green thing dropped into his face. He checked his hat for anymore hidden items and, finding none, looked on the ground. He bent down and picked up the clover from the ground, feeling the power from the little five leaf clover.
But it wasn’t freely given, it was… returned?
The wriggling returned, his heart pounding. This was his five leaf clover. How had he lost it?
“What did the druids do?” “You really don’t remember, do you?” “Did they wipe your mind for teaching us?”
That’s what they had asked, Rebecca and Midnightwarrior. They were also the only ones who had touched his hat. And Midnightwarrior had worn his clothes, if those really were Ydris’ own clothes, then it was entirely possible that one of his clovers was tucked away inside…
“Fleas… those foolish, wretched fleas!” Ydris snarled, the realization sinking in. The druids would pay.
