Alphonse Brengard. Justice delayed, but not denied.
When New York cop-killer Alphonse Brengard walked his last mile at Sing Sing on September 6, 1934 it may have been with a firm sense of time and his crimes having finally caught up with him. Brengard died for a murder effectively committed years before, but he was not to wait in Sing Sing’s infamous ‘Death House’ for very long. After evading the law for several years after the shooting, Brengard…

Ongoing Mike Malloy script
So I have a long standing aspiration to take my love of researching random bullshit and turn it into a podcast. Mostly to PUT it all somewhere.
Anyway I've been reading about Iron Mike Malloy and I gotta tell you I know they pulled it off eventually but sometimes the Gods really do look after fools and children. THEY TRIED TO KILL THAT MAN LIKE 5 TIMES! And like I have no idea why some of this shit didn't work.

Galladrabbles - Still into...
This week's @galladrabbles for the prompt set by @crossmydna "Still into you" by Paramour. I love a good song prompt!
This is the 11th part of my True Crime!AU. You can read it from the beginning: HERE
|||||||||||
Mikhailo “Call me Mickey, asshole!” Milkovich’s a walking and talking encyclopedia. At least when it comes to crimes.
Ian can’t get enough of listening to him.
Currently they’re walking through the park. Shadowy whispers all around them.
“So you’re saying this guy survived three shootings, at least six stabbings, countless fights, liver failure and all that shit?”
Mickey grins. “Yup.. Found him buried in the snow here once.” He nods to the trees. “He was blue. But alive. Fucking Frank.”
Ian nods. Makes notes. Mickey just keeps talking. “Knew you’d be into his story, North Side.”
“Why?”
“You’re both Gallaghers.”
One of my favourite true crime podcasts did an episode on Michael Malloy. Immediately I was reminded of Frank Gallagher. You can read about Michael "Iron Mike" Malloy here in this wikipedia article (beware: there's a picture of dead body in the article!) or google to find a podcast episode of your liking. His story really is wild! (and quite tragic in the end).

Michael Malloy AKA Mike the Durable AKA Iron Mike. During the Great Depression, five men took out a life insurance policy on a homeless alcoholic that they were sure was going to drink himself to death. The owner of a bar allowed him to drink for free, but he kept drinking and didn’t die. So they tried to poison him with antifreeze. Didn’t work. The turpentine, horse liniment, rat poison, methanol….still didn’t work. A sandwich made with rotten sardines and tacks. Still no luck. Then they took his drunk body out in the cold and poured water on him. He lived. Then they ran him over with a car. He was in the hospital for three weeks, but survived. Then they poisoned him with carbon monoxide, and he finally died. They were all convicted of murder.

Mike Malloy, an Irish Immigrant, former fire fighter, homeless man, and noted drunk, was a man who was as unlucky as he was durable. He was the target of a life insurance scheme. The killers took out three life insurance policies against Mike and tried to get him to drink himself to death. Being a 60 year old alcoholic, Mike was willing to get plastered, and since one of the killers owned the bar Mike drank at, they were willing to give him an open tab.
But Mike didn’t die. Even when he was served turpentine, antifreeze, a sandwich with tacks and rotten sardines, he still didn’t die. Then, the killers waited until he passed out and left him in the cold New York winter to freeze after pouring water on him. Mike woke up and went to a homeless shelter to warm up. He was even later run over with a taxi (Intentionally) and Mike went back to the bar after spending three weeks in the hospital.
Eventually, they finally killed him with a gas tube shoved down his throat and a gas lantern. But by this time, people were starting to ask questions and all four men were sentenced to the electric chair.

Iron Mike, the indestructible Irishman
Mike Malloy was an Irish man who lived in New York. Once employed as an engineer, the Great Depression meant that there were few jobs. Mike was struggling to make ends meet and ended up drinking most nights.
Times were desperate for a lot of people in the 1930’s, but few would go as far as a gang eventually known as The Murder Trust. The men decided to take out some life insurance policies on someone, kill them and claim the money. They just had to find an easy target.
In December 1932, a bartender named Joseph Murphy created 3 policies for his “brother” Nicholas Mellory. Nicholas didn’t exist, but they planned to pass their victim off as the deceased when they went to claim the money. The other members of the gang were Tony Marino – the owner of the bar, Frank Pasqua an undertaker and Daniel Kreisberg – a fruit seller.
The life insurance money was worth over $30,000 in todays economy. Mike Malloy was the perfect person to play Nicholas Mellory, he just had no idea of his role.
At first they tried to kill him with alcohol poisoning, Mike was broke so when all the drinks were suddenly “on the house” he was ecstatic, but no matter how much he consumed, he was still standing.
The gang tried methanol and some highly poisonous ethanol that wasn’t suitable for human consumption, but it seemed as though Mike Mallory was indestructible.
They came up with a new plan, a sandwich that would surely kill him, carefully prepared with gone off sardines, carpet tacks, glass and shredded tin. Mike asked for a second helping.
They then tried some oysters mixed with denatured alcohol, something that would kill most people, not Mike Malloy.
Next they left Mike out in the freezing cold, soaked him in water and left him to succumb to the elements, Mike was back at the bar the next day.
The next to join the gang was Hershey Green, a cab driver who agreed to run Mike over.
On January 30th 1993 Mike was brought to Fordham hospital after being found on the side of the road. He suffered from a concussion, broken shoulder and a possible fractured skull.
The gang kept their eyes on the headlines for news of the Irishmans death but just a week later Mike was back at the bar, ready for a drink.
There was a botched machine gun attack, the time they just hit him over the head and finally they took a tube from the gas light in a hotel room and placed it in his mouth while he slept off yet another night of free drink.
Mike was finally killed on the 10th attempt.  A doctor signed off on his death as pneumonia and listed him as Nicholas Mellory, for a fee.
The gang had spent about half of the money they would receive from the policy just trying to kill Mike and give him free food and drink. He wasn’t offered much in death, his funeral was little more than $20 and the Murder Trust didn’t even have his remains embalmed. A mistake that would come back to haunt them.
When the authorities got wind of what happened Mike Malloy was exhumed and given a full autopsy, revealing he had died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Mike Malloy
The 5 members of the Murder trust were put on trial and convicted, Green was sent to prison and the 4 others were executed in the electric chair the following year. It took ten attempts to kill Iron Mike, but just one to kill the cowards who pretended to be his friends.

Concluding that it was unlikely that anything Malloy ingested was going to kill him quickly enough, the group decided to freeze him to death. On an extremely cold night, after Malloy drank until passing out, he was carried to a park, dumped in the snow, and had 5 US gallons (19 l; 4.2 imp gal) of water poured on his bare chest. Malloy reappeared the following day for his drink.

Michael Malloy (1873 – 1933), later known as either Mike the Durable or Iron Mike, was an Irish man and former firefighter who lived in New York City during the 1920s and 1930s. The events that led to Malloy’s death began in January 1933. He was, at the time, an alcoholic and homeless. A group of men who were acquainted with Malloy, later dubbed “the Murder Trust” by the headlines, plotted to take out three life insurance policies on Malloy, and then get him to drink himself to death. the conspirators were Tony Marino, Joseph “Red” Murphy (bartender), Francis Pasqua (undertaker), Hershey Green (cab driver), and Daniel Kriesberg (grocer), Nicholas Mellory (florist), and a group of petty criminals: John McNally, Edward “Tin Ear” Smith (so-called even though his artificial ear was made of wax), “Tough Tony” Bastone, and his slavish sidekick, Joseph Maglione. The first part of the plot was successful, presumably achieved with the aid of a corrupt insurance agent, and they stood to gain over $3,500 (more than $66,000 by 2017’s standards according to the CPI) if Malloy died an accidental death. Marino owned a speakeasy and gave Malloy unlimited credit, thinking Malloy would abuse it and drink himself to death. The prior year, Marino, 27, had befriended a homeless woman named Mabelle Carson and convinced her to take out a $2,000 life insurance policy, naming him as the beneficiary. One frigid night he force-fed her alcohol, stripped off her clothing, doused the sheets and mattress with ice water, and pushed the bed beneath an open window. The medical examiner listed the cause of death as bronchial pneumonia, and Marino collected the money without incident. The plan didn’t go as easily with Michael Malloy, however. Every morning he showed up at Marino’s place in the Bronx and requested “Another mornin’s morning, if ya don’t mind.” And although Malloy drank for a majority of his waking day, it did not kill him. To remedy this, Marino substituted Malloy’s liquor with antifreeze, but Malloy would simply drink until he passed out, wake up, and come back for more. #destroytheday https://www.instagram.com/p/B8tmjtGBRKf/?igshid=1cev51qb1nwb8

305 US Climate Mayors commit to adopt, honor and uphold Paris Climate Agreement goals
STATEMENT FROM THE CLIMATE MAYORS IN RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT TRUMP’S WITHDRAWAL FROM THE PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT
The President’s denial of global warming is getting a cold reception from America’s cities.
As 305 US Mayors representing 61 million Americans, we will adopt, honor, and uphold the commitments to the goals enshrined in the Paris Agreement. We will intensify efforts to meet each of our cities’ current climate goals, push for new action to meet the 1.5 degrees Celsius target, and work together to create a 21st century clean energy economy.
We will continue to lead. We are increasing investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency. We will buy and create more demand for electric cars and trucks. We will increase our efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, create a clean energy economy, and stand for environmental justice. And if the President wants to break the promises made to our allies enshrined in the historic Paris Agreement, we’ll build and strengthen relationships around the world to protect the planet from devastating climate risks.
The world cannot wait — and neither will we.

On This Day in 1932, Michael Malloy – The Man Who Would Not Die
One of the cases in my book ‘Murders, Mysteries and Misdemeanors in New York‘ is that of New York legend ‘Iron’ Mike Malloy. Malloy’s story is part of the city and state’s history and his death led to the destruction of the so-called ‘Murder Trust’ that had killed already and would no doubt have continued doing so. To help promote the book here’s the chapter on Malloy free, gratis and for…

Michael Malloy (1873 – 1933), later known as either Mike the Durable or Iron Mike, was an Irish man and former firefighter who lived in New York City during the 1920s and 1930s. The events that led to Malloy's death began in January 1933. He was, at the time, an alcoholic and homeless. A group of men who were acquainted with Malloy, later dubbed "the Murder Trust" by the headlines, plotted to take out three life insurance policies on Malloy, and then get him to drink himself to death. the conspirators were Tony Marino, Joseph "Red" Murphy (bartender), Francis Pasqua (undertaker), Hershey Green (cab driver), and Daniel Kriesberg (grocer), Nicholas Mellory (florist), and a group of petty criminals: John McNally, Edward “Tin Ear” Smith (so-called even though his artificial ear was made of wax), “Tough Tony” Bastone, and his slavish sidekick, Joseph Maglione. The first part of the plot was successful, presumably achieved with the aid of a corrupt insurance agent, and they stood to gain over $3,500 (more than $66,000 by 2017's standards according to the CPI) if Malloy died an accidental death. The plan didn't go as easily with Michael Malloy, however. Every morning he showed up at Marino’s place in the Bronx and requested “Another mornin’s morning, if ya don’t mind.” And although Malloy drank for a majority of his waking day, it did not kill him. To remedy this, Marino substituted Malloy's liquor with antifreeze, but Malloy would simply drink until he passed out, wake up, and come back for more. #destroytheday
