Entity Caught on Camera in Squirrel Cage Jail, Iowa

When John R. visited the Squirrel Cage Jail in Iowa, United States for a paranormal investigation, he was hoping to come home with a few ghost photos. The spirits did not disappoint.

In this photo from the jail, a dark, shadowy entity appears with its back to the camera. Performing some research in collaboration with the staff, John was able to determine that the entity is wearing a jacket with patches that match those worn by local police in the 1930s and 40s. In addition, it appears to be holding a key fob similar to the ones used at this particular jail, suggesting that the entity may be the spirit of a former prison guard.

As I did with Canada, for US and other Anglo-colonized countries I'm reading a Native book.

When I first saw this cover small, I thought the character was caught in a snowstorm and that it must take place somewhere north. Nope! It's in Texas, and the snowstorm is actually ghost-dogs which is so much more awesome.

Review

Ellie (short for Elatsoe) is just a normal, everyday asexual Lipan Apache teen who can raise the dead. The technique is a family secret and she lives in the shadow of her 6x great grandmother's legendary powers. She resides in a normal, everyday contemporary United States where there are laws governing things like vampires and fairy ring transports, and scarecrows might eat you in Iowa. When Ellie's cousin Trevor dies in a car accident, he tells her he was murdered, and Ellie and her family and bestie Jake must investigate what happened.

This is a cozy mystery that is just so wholesome and a little quirky. You'd think throwing vampire people as an aside into an indigenous family's story would be kinda jumping the shark, but I like how the "melting pot" of America is reflected in the imported magic. And we get to view this from an indigenous perspective, like when Ellie mourns killing a Lipan monster that is probably the last of its kind.

But the mystery is the main focus of the story, and we get both amateur sleuthing and antics along with more serious reflections on both death and grief. Ellie's family is loving and supportive and wholly functional and that's refreshing to read. The characters are down-to-earth and funny. Also, she has a pet ghost-dog named Kirby!! [spoiler: the dog doesn't die, well, except for being already dead]

This was a fun and sweet read with just the right amount of seriousness and action.

You did it to yourself. You were the one solely responsible for scaring the hell out of yourself. You knew that.

And yet, you couldn’t stop.

You’d always had a love/hate relationship with scary movies and shows, since you were a kid getting freaked out by The Goonies or ET or the dog scenes in The Sandlot. Even so, you found yourself drawn to all things spooky, still to this day – willing to teeter fearfully on that line between thrill and terror. Ready to indulge your habit even if it meant nightmares for the next three nights.

Auston, on the other hand, stayed as far away from the spooky stuff as possible, and though he always encouraged you to save the scares for either daylight or for when he was there to comfort you, he was also ever willing to come to the rescue when you ignored his warnings, checking every room in the house for intruders before you fell asleep, or sleeping with the bathroom light on, or laying in bed with at least a hand touching your body at all times, or…

The list could go on.

And tonight… tonight was one of those nights where you really wished you had listened to him.

Auston and the Leafs were finishing out the back half of a home and home in Montreal, and, after watching the team win, you had decided to pop some kettle corn, snuggle on the couch with Felix, and throw on a Youtube documentary about the haunted Villisca Ax Murder house in Iowa, one you’d been meaning to watch during the day to avoid any unintended consequences… but watching in the dark, during a thunderstorm no less, just this once couldn’t hurt, right?

Wrong.

You should have known better.

You jumped at every sound the EVP picked up, every bang against the floors of the creaky house… hell, you even jumped when the furnace in your own house kicked on with a quiet click.

So of course, you nearly jumped out of your skin when you heard a pronounced thud coming from right outside your front door just as the power flickered, adding to the uneasiness of the already blustery October night. Felix’s head popped up from its resting place on your hip, and he stared at the door, letting out a single, warning ruff under his breath. You sat up at the next unnerving sound – the jiggling of your front doorknob.

You sunk into the couch as if attempting to disappear, pulling the hood of Auston’s stolen sweatshirt over your head and wrapping your arms around Felix’s body as you buried your face in his scruffy neck, your pulse quickening.

As the key finally turned the lock, the door swung open, and in from the shadowy night walked Auston, though not from his usual entrance through the garage.

“Sorry, babe – the wind is messing with the sensors and I couldn’t get the garage door to open,” he explained simply as he closed and locked the door once more. “And I knocked over the pumpkin on the doorstep trying to let myself in.”

You pressed a hand to your chest, shaking your head as you exhaled with a huff.

“You scared the hell outta me,” you complained, tipping your head back against the couch just in time to welcome the upside-down kiss Auston laid on your lips. He smiled wide.

“Why, you think somebody’s tryin’ to get ya?” he teased, poking you in the sides. Before you could deny it, his eyes flicked to the TV to see what was onscreen. He sighed.

“Well, no wonder. Babe, you have got to stop watching this paranormal investigation bullshit on Youtube,” he asserted, shaking his head and closing the app. “You’re gonna give yourself panic attacks.”

You pursed your lips, admitting to yourself that he was right, though you’d never concede it aloud.

Auston rounded the side of the couch to take a seat next to you, though Felix unabashedly plopped himself right between your thighs, drawing giggles from you both as you shared an amused look at his desperation to be the sole focus of attention. Auston pulled him close, snuggling Felix against his chest.

“Good boy, Felix. Were you protecting Mama?”

“I think homeboy was just as scared as I was,” you mumbled, tangling your fingers in the fur on his hip.

Auston poked his head out from behind Felix’s, giving you a skeptical look.

“I doubt it.”

You narrowed your eyes.

Auston shivered dramatically, still trying to shake the chill that had settled over him outside. He leaned into you, his head settling in the crook of your neck.

“S’freezing out there,” he complained. “Cuddle me.”

“You’re being mean to me,” you pointed out, though you wrapped your arms around his shoulders from behind anyway. “I shouldn’t share my body heat with you.”

Auston hummed. “Yeah, but who’s gonna be the one to keep the monsters at bay for you now that you’ve once again tortured that pretty little head of yours? Hmm?” He turned his head to smirk up at you before settling back against you, kissing your wrist. “So warming me up seems like a pretty nice way to repay me if you ask me.”

You pressed your lips in a tight line, then, with a defeated sigh, reached for your discarded blanket and threw it over his legs and yours.

“‘Kay, fine. You win.”

nano projects

ring of fire is an installment in undercover of darkness, a series @kaiusvnoir and I are working on. this’s about two paranormal investigators* as they’re investigating a little homegrown cult in nowhere, iowa. cas is skeptical, felix is concerned, I have already written the ending, approximately 20k is already written. it’s a good time. cas is tired, too trusting of strangers, plays the hero, and--I wanna give the ending away now.

the second is gray’s origin from the chemicals between us (also a collaboration with @kaiusvnoir**), a post-apocalyptic series after a chemical attempt to save the earth backfires. gray’s the leader of a small band of survivors--but before he was that he was just as scared and lost as the rest of humanity. mostly I explore that beginning. this’s also in progress, and a few thousand words have been written.

the third is I, victory, which is an idea I’ve been floating around my head for a while about a cyberpunk/futuristic scifi retelling of frankenstein. probably also gay, because this is me. monte, who lives out of an old cargo truck, builds a robot out of abandoned pieces and slices of code frankensteined together. as you might expect, things go awry.

and y’know, this is the Plan. we’ll see if I get to one of them, let alone all three... but I am really excited about gray’s origin, so... there’s that :p

Mathias Ham House  Dubuque, Iowa

The Mathias Ham House was built in 1837 by Mathias Ham in Dubuque, Iowa. The house was a small two-story, five room structure for his wife and five children. More rooms were added on after the death of Ham’s wife, going from five rooms to twenty-three.

Mathias made his fortune in the mining, lumber, agriculture and shipping vessel. He would sit in the very top room of his house, keeping an eye on his ships. One day he spotted pirates on the river and alerted the authorities. As they were being arrested, the pirates vowed vengeance on him. However, when the day came, it wasn’t Mathias they found.

It was the end of the eighteen-hundreds. Every member of the Ham family had passed on except for one, Sarah Ham. She was one of Mathias’ daughters and the only one living in the house at the time. While she was reading in bed one night, she head someone moving around on the floor below her. She slowly made her way downstairs to investigate and found no one.

The next night she was better prepared in case the intruder returned. Previously that day, she alerted her neighbors of what happened. Informed them that if the intruder returned she would put a lantern in the window as a signal for help. But that wouldn’t be the only preventative measure she would take.

That night, Sarah heard the same movement below her. She called out to the person but received no answer. Locking herself in her bedroom, Sarah placed the lantern in the window and picked up her shotgun. She waited as heavy footsteps made their way to her. They stopped before her bedroom door. Sarah fired two shots.

Her neighbors arrived shortly after only to find a bloody trail leading down to the river. They found the pirate captain who had threatened Mathias dead on the river bank.

Today the house is a museum and considered to be haunted. Paranormal reports include unexplained lights, noises, cold chills, old broken pump organ plays on its own. Footsteps and voices are also heard. It is believed Mathias Ham and possibly the pirate captain are the ones responsible for the haunting.
