The line between public road and private driveway is thin and always shifting. The difficulty is that if you find yourself on a private county road, you will not be able to turn around. You will have to go wherever it leads and there is no telling where that might be. Do not try to turn off the road. What lies in the dark fields on either side is worse.

Coal reached out an arm, allowing his short-fingered paws to brush across the toughened, leafy stalks of the maize plants, now rising taller than he stood. The Nekoto allowed his lips to lift into a smile, exposing his fangs as he felt a surge of pride well up inside him.

He had done it!

Even with the import restrictions, and even having to be extra careful about surveillance, he had done it! Coal-and-Embers of the Takaiyama Clan had managed to increase the crop yield without magic! This research would be of great help to the impoverished citizens of the City of Fuldair, when the Hand were driven out. They would be able to get their lives back on track without having to worry about food anymore!

Coal looked about him, the stalks of the maize plants blocking his view, but knowing that this sea of greenish yellow stretched for a good ninety-five feet in every direction. It wasn't a large field, by any stretch of the imagination. But it was the most important one he had. It was his most prized work! He couldn't wait to let his Lordship know about the good news!

“Your brother is adorable.” The cashier cooed at Danny, peering over the counter with a smile. “What’s his name?”

Danny looked down to the surly, scowling little de-aged Batman currently holding onto his hand, glaring up at the cashier with bright blue eyes.

Things had already been bad enough when he’d gotten caught in a fight in Gotham, but things went from bad to worse when a magician had hit Batman with a de-aging spell and then shoved them through a portal.

Into a different fucking dimension.

Because of course neither of their lives could be easy. And now the two of them were stuck in Iowa in the middle of nowhere, at a truck stop gas station, trying to go on a cross-country roadtrip to reach the nearest hero city and get home.

He looked up and smiled awkwardly, trying to come up with a name off the top of his head — one of the heroes called Batman ‘B’ when he got hit right? B for Batman, right. B… B… Bee… Bees.

“Buzz.” He said, and tried not to grimace as the cashier’s face warped with surprise. “Like the astronaut.”

This was gonna be a long trip.

Okay, so first of all Dan would like to say it’s not his fault. Ellie was the one to bring some unknown object into the speeder and Jazz was the one driving. Or had Sam been driving- didn’t matter! It wasn’t his fault, he wasn’t the one shooting at them, he wasn’t the one to break whatever, he was not the one to open a stupid portal, and so it wasn’t his fault!

So why is he now like, five years old, and why is the speeder crashed in some sort of corn field. Why is everyone- except for Jazz whose now like six- also like three at most?! And- oh fuck the door just opened and… okay that’s a kid. Like, nine at most.

A kid and an adult, who he hadn’t noticed at first so again, it’s not his fault if he hissed at them and tried to hide his not-siblings behind him. It’s also not fair they’re apparently stuck to ghost speak for who knows how long, but at least they can understand the people.

“Martha, get some blankets, it’s happened again!”
