I’m resigning. I will stay until we find a replacement but not longer than necessary. I thank you for your generosity during my time working for you, but I’m ready for a fresh start as I think it’s what would be best for me right now.
I’ll see you soon,
Y/N
That was the text Harry had received at 11am, just one hour ago. He’d called profusely, probably ten times in total, and sent out a pathetic amount of text messages that had all gone ignored and unanswered.
Harry had lashed out— he could see that now; he’d been horribly unfair and he had taken advantage of Y/N’s inability to express herself in situations of distress. Harry’s worst trait was his short-temperedness and while he had gone through years of therapy to work on it, sometimes it took ahold of him in ways he couldn’t realize until after the fact.
Of course the last thing he’d wanted was for her to resign, which was exactly why her message had twisted his stomach a bit more intensely than he would’ve liked; he had no idea how to rectify this situation. Most things in his life went as he wished and if they didn’t, he found it was easy to make it so they did. But not now— no, he had to think about this carefully.
It had turned one when his phone rang; he was typing away in his office, trying to distract himself.  Her caller ID flashed on his screen, but it wasn’t her voice that caught his ears— it was a man’s. A man’s who’s name was Andrew.
“I’m from the viper,” he said, and Harry could swear he started seeing red, “your friend Y/N got a little too drunk for me to feel comfortable sending her away on her own. Is there any way you could come pick her up?”
Harry couldn’t help the string of curses which left his mouth as he gathered his house key. “Is she okay?” He asked, only to receive a conflicted hum.
“She had too many martinis and she was crying earlier. She said something about a fight.”
“Yeah, okay. Thanks, man. Will you keep an eye out until I get there?”
“Of course.”
As Harry got into his car, he felt the overwhelming urge to chastise her, to keep talking until she finally listened to him when it came to her own safety. Not even one day had passed since he’d had to pick her up the last time— no lesson learned, no regrets.
But then, as he neared the bar, the rational part of his brain advised him against it. Y/N was no child, she was aware of her actions and she knew what was best for her— so for Harry to act high and mighty would be wrong and uncalled for.
He needed to just be there for her. Drop the barrier and be there.
He was ready to offer that to her.
Y/N could swear her eyes were playing tricks on her. It wouldn’t be unrealistic, really, her vision had become blurry about an hour ago— but, well, she would probably recognize that silhouette anywhere. He wore jeans and a shirt and his hair was still styled for work; Andrew was pointing at her, and so his green eyes followed. When he spotted her, Y/N felt naked under his gaze.
And before she knew it, he was walking toward her.
“What are you doing here?” She demanded, lower lip jutted out in a pout. Y/N had gone drinking in the hopes of distracting herself— and yes, maybe it wasn’t exactly working, but it definitely wouldn’t start working if he was physically here.
“Andrew called me. Stand up, I’m taking you home.”
Andrew was somebody she‘d met a few hours ago. Originally he‘d flirted with her, asking questions about her as she sat at the bar willing to answer all of them soberly— but once eleven had struck, all she could talk about was Harry. Y/N wasn’t fond of airing dirty laundry so she‘d left the gory details of their fight out, but Andrew knew of a fight.
She was starting to regret it now that Harry was here.
Instead of doing as he’d asked— or ordered, more like, she leaned into the booth further.
“No.”
His eyebrow raised, “no?”
“I don’t leave or go out with dickheads. You taught me that.”
He looked ticked off and it satisfied something within her that had been needing it all night. When he breathed a sigh, eyes closing momentarily, she knew she had him.
“Y/N, would you please humor me and let me take you home? We can keep talking in the car, but not in front of these people.”
“What if I don’t want to go home, huh? Why are you always telling me what to do like you have the right? You’re not my dad.” Her words were slurred and her expression loose. Then she laughed to herself, giggled actually, ridiculously loud. “That’s funny, of course you’re not my dad cause he’s dead! Dead, six feet underground, you know? Probably lower, cause he definitely didn’t go to heaven! He’s, like, really deep underground.”
Concern warped his features.
“Y/N,” he warned, “please.”
She’d turned heads.
“But you know what you and my dad have in common? Yelling. Just yelling, for no fucking reason— yell yell yell, make it feel like my fault even though it isn’t. Right? That’s what my dad used to do to my mom, you know that? That’s why he’s in hell.”
She was pointing an accusatory finger at him, slurring even more than before.
“And you know what I said to her when she left him? That I would never let a man treat me that way. Never! Promised, hand on my heart and everything, I promised. But you’re different, aren’t you? Cause I like you, cause you’re not like my dad.” Her face fell again into the surfaces of her palms, “you’re not like my dad, but you reminded me of him. And I feel— feel like I’m betraying my mom.” Y/N hiccuped quietly, stumbling over a few words.
The gravity of her words were not lost on him— in fact, he’d never felt as guilty in his life.
“Hey,” he beckoned her to look at him, placing his tentative hand atop her arm, “we’ll talk about it. About everything. But not now. Not here.”
“You’re so confusing, you know that? One second you’re really nice to me and then— and then you aren’t.”
“Sweetheart,” he grasped her face as a last attempt to catch her undivided attention. Harry thumbed at her cheek and stared dutifully into her clouded eyes, “let me take care of you tonight. I’ll make it better.”
In all fairness, she’d lost the fight the second his eyes had met hers. There was something about them, maybe their deep shade of green or how effortlessly she could read them, that could probably persuade her into doing anything.
“Fine,” she mumbled after a minute, letting Harry wrap an arm around her waist as they walked. On their way out Y/N said goodbye to Andrew and stayed quiet otherwise, choosing to give Harry the silent treatment. Harry knew he couldn’t expect her to speak to him, so he didn’t force it.
As they drove, Harry couldn’t help glancing over every once in a while to study her expressions. There was barely a moment she wasn’t staring out the window watching cars drive by; even when his hand instinctively landed on her thigh she didn’t react, only moving it away slightly from his touch.
“Are you driving me to my apartment?”
And although both of them knew he’d really been directed toward his house, Harry still pretended to have chosen to take another route. “Course,” he muttered hoarsely, trying to mask his embarrassment with a quiet cough. Y/N sighed, her eyes pressing shut for a moment as she tried to let the guilt roll off of her back. He doesn’t deserve your sympathy.
“Where’s Jamie?”
He clicked his tongue. “Still at my mother’s.”
“Oh.”
The stubborn thing she was, Y/N refused Harry’s help getting out of the car. Instead she opened the door by herself, almost tripped when she jumped down from her seat and kept a distance anyway. Harry still watched, though, ready to help if needed.
Y/N unlocked the door (failing to find the keyhole several times) and kept it wide open for Harry to follow behind. The first thing she did was toe off her shoes followed by falling into bed.
“Y/N, have some water.”
“Stop telling me what to do,” she uttered, but accepted the glass of water anyway.
He ignored her. “Are you hungry?”
“I’m tired.”
“You can sleep as soon as you’ve changed and washed your face.”
She groaned, pulling a blanket over her head, “Harry…”
“Y/N.”
That stern mention of her name was enough to get her out of bed, limbs pretty much hanging loosely from her body as if she had no control over them— and honestly, it felt like she didn’t. Her eyes closed as Harry wiped a cool cloth over her face, ridding it of a light layer of makeup and sweat, everything that had accumulated at the bar. There were times she leaned into him, forehead falling to his shoulder and arms wrapping instinctively around his waist for support. She could swear that for a moment he’d pressed his lips to her forehead, but the daydream she was in barred her from really registering it.
“Why’d you go out drinking again?”
“Wanted to.”
“Told you not to do that. I meant it.”
“Well people keep hurting my feelings,” she mumbled, “and drinking your pain away is kind of a tradition in my family, so.”
Y/N had never really shared personal details about her family to Harry, but… well, the words were flowing right out of her mouth and the memories reincarnated newly in her head. She was referring to her mother, the former alcoholic in the family. Growing up her mother had drunk so much that she’d almost died from liver failure. As a small child Y/N had promised herself never to end up like her, but she was starting to understand more and more why her mother spent so many years drinking.
Harry‘s thoughts stayed internalized, but he made sure to make her feel heard. Rubbing over the top of her eyebrow, his breath hit her forehead as he spoke,  “I’m so sorry, sweetheart. You didn’t deserve it.”
Her eyes peeked open, the previously warm towel no longer warm. Harry ran it under water again. “Deserve what?”
“Everything, especially the way I behaved earlier. I should’ve taken a moment to myself, instead I lashed out on you.”
It wasn’t until now that Y/N noticed the close proximity between her and Harry— obviously she knew he was cleaning her face for her, but it didn’t really click until now, she supposed. She could see everything, but it didn’t really matter; there was nothing about Harry, especially on him, that could deter her from thinking of him as the most beautiful man alive. Imperfections and all.
The towel met her neck this time, the other side held upright by his steady hand. She could feel his thumb tracing shapes on the surface of her skin and although she was trying very hard not to think of him in any inappropriate way, the image of his hand wrapped around her throat awakened something horrible within the confines of her intoxicated mind. It stayed there.
It was self destructive how often she spent thinking about him, really.
“You still there, baby?”
And he was so gentle— whenever he wasn’t yelling at her, of course— and soft, knowing the lines of what she could handle and what she couldn’t. No man had ever been this considerate and while it may just be his nature, it meant everything to Y/N. As the boundaries had begun to blur more and more, it became easier to misinterpret normal gestures for something more, something so much realer than it could ever be.
But he was calling her baby, and nobody had done that before.
“Yeah.”
“You were much more mouthy back in the bar,” he breathed out, an amused smile tugging at his lips. “Don’t wanna yell at me anymore?”
“No, I‘m not like you.”
“Ouch.”
Harry was humoring her and while it was really really nice; this whole thing, the gentle touches and the giggles shared in between a serious conversation, Y/N couldn’t let it get to her head.
“You were really mean to me and I didn’t do anything.”
His eyes searched for hers, but hers were stuck to his chest. “I know. I don’t know how to make it up to you, but I’ll spend a long time trying, I promise. You’re so sweet to me, so nice, I don’t mean to hurt your feelings. You know that, right?”
And although her heart was still furiously bleeding out, she was willing to ignore that for now. Throw bandages on and refuse a trip to the hospital because really she was just fine. There was just something about how he spoke to her that made it feel like she was floating— like she really was fine.
“Yeah.”
“Good, it’s very important to me that you do.”
Y/N’s eyes nearly glazed over when she thought about Harry being like this on the regular. It was a dangerous game they were playing.
“Look at me,” he breathed, beckoning her to do so with the grip he still had on her throat. Her eyes looked so innocent in this moment and although Harry knew Y/N was nothing if not tainted, she looked like she’d never been touched by the realities of life. “So pretty, you know that? So beautiful.”
She felt smaller in his gaze. “You think so?”
Y/N didn’t think anyone had said that to her ever. Nothing of the sort.
“I know so.”
“Thank you.”
“How about we go find you something comfortable to sleep in, yeah?”
“Yeah,” Y/N shook her head, willing to rid herself of this weird tension in her body before allowing Harry to lead her back into the bedroom. She sat on the edge of the bed as Harry retrieved some clothes and looked up at him expectantly when she could barely keep upright.
“You sure?”
“I physically can’t stand up, Harry.”
And though he looked torn, he ended up reaching for her sweater to pull it over her body, revealing the lacy bra she hid underneath. Y/N’s breasts had always been the biggest ones amongst her skinny friends and growing up she often felt ridiculed for it, though she supposed she could count on Harry not to judge. They were just there, so why pretend like they weren’t?
For Harry, taking off Y/N’s sweater was a completely different experience and although he didn’t wish to be a creep, he couldn’t help but letting out an awkward but knowing cough when he accidentally stared right down them. He hastily threw the shirt he’d brought her onto her torso, scared of what would happen if he were to delay it any longer. Harry prided himself on being a respectful man, but being with Y/N had always tested that quality of his.
“What?” She asked, a touch of feigned innocence to her tone, and he rushed to shake his head.
She knew what.
“Nothing.”
“M’kay.”
“Stand up for me?”
Y/N felt less amazing about her thighs, to be frank. She couldn’t really explain it, but they weren’t visually pleasing to her; cellulite littered the back of them and she obviously didn’t have a thigh gap, but that had become less of an issue. Y/N felt like her thighs had no real redeeming quality. It was a destructive way of thinking, she would admit, but… well, she’d carried that around since childhood.
As Harry pulled down her jeans, she felt void of anything. She didn’t exactly feel great, but better than when other guys had taken off her trousers. It was probably his age. She figured maturity increased as age did, and if Harry were to dislike the look of her body, he would be graceful about it.
“Hold onto my shoulders and lift your right leg.”
He got on his knees in front of her, pulling one leg in after the other. After doing so successfully, he allowed her to get under the covers.
“I’m still mad at you,” she mumbled into the covers, eyes fluttering to a close.
He hummed, “I know.”
“But thank you.”
“Don’t have to thank me for taking care of you.”
“Mhm,” she breathed, “it’ll be the last time, I promise.”
Sleep was pulling at her eyelids.
“Last time what?”
He received no answer. Upon a closer look, he saw Y/N completely overtaken by sleep. Her lips were situated in a pout and her foot peeked out of her thick comforter in the way he had already seen last time he’d brought her to bed.
He allowed himself more time to watch over her this time, scared that if he were to leave it would be the last he saw of her. The anxiety settled on his chest in heavy waves and the image of a precious Y/N was slipping further away from his mind. He had been a horrible person, allowing himself to become the type of man he’d always tried not to be… and he couldn’t do that to her. He couldn’t let this be that with her. He couldn’t bare it.
Harry had always thought of himself to be tattooed with imperfections. As he stared down at Y/N’s sleeping body, he couldn’t help the guilt that wrapped around him like a torture blanket. To him, she was perfect. She was kind and beautiful, she carried her heart out on her sleeve and overcame her past to grow in spite of painful trauma.
What he didn’t know, though, was that she thought the same of him. She thought of him as the most capable person, strong and kind. Her heart yearned for him in ways no one could comprehend.
She thought of him as everything but instead of embracing it, he’d pushed her away… and now both of them had to suffer the consequences.
Harry had stayed the night, but he hadn‘t slept; he‘d spent the night lying on Y/N‘s uncomfortable couch with various thoughts swirling around in his head. At eight he‘d stood up, started preparing breakfast and wasted time looking through social media to distract himself from the girl sleeping in the next room.
Y/N slipped out thirty minutes later, surprised when she saw Harry moving through her kitchen as though he knew it like the back of his hand. She coughed, not knowing where to put her arms and folding them in instead.
“Hi, sweetheart,” he tried to smile, “I hope you’re hungry, I made you a bagel with eggs if that’s okay.”
“That’s… yeah,” she swallowed a lump in her throat, stepping close to the counter, “thank you. You didn’t have to.”
“My pleasure. You—“ he pointed at the side of her face, “you have something there.”
“Oh, I—“ Harry reached forward to swipe at it, wiping his finger clean on his trousers and stroking her cheek once for good measure. “Thanks. Probably toothpaste.”
“Probably.”
Silence decorated their next few seconds, awkward glances and uncomfortable tension felt down to the bones. Then Harry straightened up and breathed in, simultaneously Y/N opened her mouth.
“I—“
“Are you— oh, sorry.”
“No, you go on,” she urged, waving a dismissive hand at him.
Harry smiled, “are you okay?”
“Uh, yes. Yeah, I am actually. Bit of a headache but that‘s expected. Thanks for…picking me up, I guess. I didn‘t want to be a burden, but I kind of told Andrew about you and he got a hold of my phone…“
Harry’s eyebrows drew together, “no, I’m glad he called. You should always reach out to me when you’re in trouble.”
“Yeah, but last time didn’t go over very well, so…”
Harry cleared his throat. “Right, I’m sorry about that. I was out of line, but that doesn‘t mean I don‘t want you to call when you need help getting home. There’s nothing more important than your safety, Y/N.”
“Yeah, but…” Y/N shook her head, overwhelming thoughts swirling endlessly inside rendering her speechless. There wasn’t anything she could say to efficiently express these concerns to him— Y/N had always been bad at communication and the last thing she wanted was to poke the bear even more.
“No go on, tell me.”
“I just… I don’t know. I felt like shit after last time.”
“I know,” he breathed out lowly, “I know you did, and I’m sorry. I didn‘t mean it.”
“But clearly you did if you felt the need to say it. I mean, it doesn’t just come out of nowhere, those accusations. You felt them. And I was thinking about it all day yesterday and… you were probably right, we are too unprofessional.”
“No, sweetheart. I enjoy our dinner sessions and I appreciate that you feel comfortable to talk to me when something bothers you—“ It didn’t matter, though. There was nothing he could say to change her mind.
The words that left her mouth were mostly involuntary. They were a protective barrier, a reason to say no, back off and a clear indication that she had no capacity for this. And although it hurt somewhere deep within her chest to express them, to become a viscous reminder of last night, especially when Harry’s eyebrows drew together in deep regret, it needed to be said.
“Harry, I meant it when I quit last night.”
A reasonable response was lost on Harry. For a moment he needed to think, to gather his thoughts— not that there were very many. He had to admit, he’d hoped they would gloss over her drunken text and pretend as though it hadn’t been. He’d hoped that Y/N felt a small spark of embarrassment when she thought about it, that she looked back on it with regret. Alas, she didn’t.
“Oh.”
He pulled back, shoulders tensing when the gravity of her statement had pulled him down along with it.
“Yeah. I mean, I love working with Jamie, I do, but I—“ I’m scared that I’ll form an attachment I will never recover from. I’m scared of the proximity we share, of how sometimes you let your fingers brush over my thigh. I’m scared because I don’t know what you mean, scared because psychoanalyzing doesn’t work on you. Or maybe— maybe I’m scared of love. With you. Or with anyone. Maybe I’m not capable of being loved. And maybe I’m not even capable of loving and maybe— just maybe, this will be the end of me. And for what? For you to say that the affection you extend to me is customary? That I have a tainted perception of reality, of love? Because I know I do. I know I do, and yet hearing it from you would hurt much more. And so maybe… maybe in this case, finding out isn’t worth the hassle. You’ll probably find I’m not either.
There was so much to say and such little capacity to say it. All Y/N could think to do was sputter words she didn’t mean and hope he understood because the alternative was ridding herself of every. little string of dignity she still possessed and she simply couldn’t do that. She couldn’t allow herself to unfold in front of the only person who’s perception of her she wanted to nurture. No one had stayed. Even if he would come to leave, she wanted him to leave with a sound picture of her.
“But you…”
“I can’t.”
“You can’t… because of yesterday?”
“No. I mean, I guess that was a bit of an eye opener, but I—“ Y/N breathed in, “I think I’m getting too attached to you. You and Jamie.”
His eyes widened just a bit and he took a small step toward her. It was so small she hardly felt him entering her space. “I don’t mind that, Y/N, you don’t need to quit—“
“I do though,” she interrupted him, a stern undertone to her voice. She coughed and said again, “I mind.”
“I think you’re still angry about yesterday.”
She had to contain the urge to roll her eyes, “I’m not. This is separate from that.”
“So it’s the attachment that’s the problem?”
“Yes.”
Harry scoffed, “that’s ridiculous. There’s nothing wrong with attachment.”
“It depends on what kind, doesn’t it?”
“Enlighten me then.”
Y/N’s mouth closed. She couldn’t do that.
So she deflected.
“Harry, my contract says that as long as I stay long enough to find a fitting replacement—“
“Fuck the contract, Y/N,” the volume of his voice almost caused Y/N to flinch into herself, “I know what my contract says. What I don’t know is why you’re giving up a job that you love, a job that pays you well, for reasons you can’t even explain to me.”
“Is my resignation not enough for you? Would hearing my reasoning really change anything if I will keep insisting on resigning no matter how often you’ll advise me against it? I doubt it matters. I doubt you would even so much as give a shit, Harry."
Y/N shook her head, tears building in the ducts of her eyes. Her father had been of great emotional abuse, her mother had spent half of her life drinking herself to liver failure and her brother had moved to Madrid as soon as he’d turned eighteen, leaving Y/N to fend for herself in a household that contained not one ounce of love— and yet this felt worse. This felt like her heart was being ripped from her chest, dropped on the floor beating and bleeding.
“You think I don’t give a shit? Really?” Y/N couldn’t help rolling her eyes, huffing when he tapped her on the wrist, muttering with a steady furrow in his brow, “don’t roll your eyes at me.”
“You know why I’m quitting and yet you want to hear it come out of my mouth. I’m not going to do it.”
“I don’t know.”
She almost laughed, “sure”
“Sweetheart—“
“Don’t call me that.” She gave him a sharp glance before heading back to her bedroom, arms falling to the sides of her timid frame. Harry stopped her just short of the door, a steady hand gripping around her wrist. She couldn’t help the gasp that left her mouth, built up tears finally streaming down in heaps— embarrassment brewed in her stomach and she couldn’t bare to look him in the eye anymore. Harry’s touch elicited a spark on her skin, blistering with uncomfortable heat. “What?”
“You’re being rude. I really think you should consider this.”
“There’s nothing to consider, okay?!  I… I feel too much for you, there’s too— there’s too much, okay? There’s too fucking mu—“
What would transpire between them next was a kiss. Initiated by Harry.
It was barely a kiss, more of a brushing of the lips— tentative movements, gentle breaths. It was the minimum and yet it was more than enough. There was an electric feeling that dragged through Y/N’s entire body as she closed her eyes and let herself feel. Harry didn’t seem very much like a gentle lover— generous, without doubt, but Y/N had always pictured him as a pin-to-the-wall, bite-to-the-lip type of man and she quickly received confirmation when he began squeezing her hand as if feeling restrained.
Y/N hadn’t kissed many people; less than five, probably, but she could say with certainty that this was already better than all of the other ones combined. She knew why. She knew the reason was that she genuinely liked Harry, that he made her feel things she’d never felt before.
But then again, Harry was her boss. He was off limits, taboo. And he was absolutely out of his mind right now.
“Wait.”
His breath fanned against her chin. “You don’t want me to?”
“No I do, I just—“ she shook her head, thoughts in a disarray like they’d never been before.
“Tell me to stop and I will.”
Her mouth opened but nothing came out, merely staggered breaths as she tried to regain the ability to think. The interruption came when Harry’s phone rang on the counter.
He groaned, took a glance at the screen and broke away when he saw his mother’s name flash as the caller ID.
“Yes?” He called into the speaker, frustration molding his features as he kept on listening. “Yes, okay, tell him I’m on my way. Give me twenty minutes… Love you too, bye.” When he turned to her, phone slipped into his back pocket, she could tell that he yearned to say more, that he yearned for her to say more. She knew he would halt his actions, leave time for her to get her words out before he left for whatever emergency he’d been called in for, that if she only said something he would consider putting her as a second priority after his son. She knew that he would make her feel important. But she said nothing. And nobody, not even the most patient person in the world could work with nothing. “Jamie’s asking for me. I need to go get him.”
She only nodded.
He sighed, running a tired hand down his face. “Alright. I need to go. I’ll see you around, Y/N.”
She stood at exactly the same spot as Harry slammed the door shut, unwavering.
Her heart was still pounding as the words she should’ve expressed minutes ago died on her lips.
Résumés had been sent to him, interviews were lined up, and Y/N had received no reply back. She hadn’t received anything, really, just a text on Thursday that he would arrange for another babysitter to come in for Jamie while he left for his late meeting, to which Y/N had typed a dry ‘ok’ and left it to sit in her inbox.
The week had started fresh and Y/N had finally left home again (only to her classes, but still). After days of not working, she was scheduled to pick up Jamie at two thirty and hoped for these last weeks to resume seamlessly. She’d gotten the car from the house, locked the door back up again and made the ten minute drive down— everything was fine.
Until now. Until Y/N set foot on preschool grounds and noticed another woman hugging her arms around Jamie’s shoulders. She seemed unfamiliar at first— glasses tipped back on her long blonde hair, a pencil skirt concealing her toned legs. Y/N had no idea who she was dealing with until she took a closer look and recognized this woman to be Stacie. Y/N had seen a picture of Stacie up in Harry’s study— she seemed to have changed a little, but the structural features she associated with her still remained intact through all these years (big blue eyes, defined cheekbones).
As soon as Jamie’s eyes set on Y/N, though, Stacie’s hands were torn away from his shoulders as he ran for her. She got on her knees, his familiar smile melting away all of the cold spots she’d developed in over a week of not seeing him.
“I miss you!” Jamie pulled away to plant a kiss right on the top of the apple of Y/N’s cheek, something he only started doing recently. She guessed he’d only really learned how to. “Daddy said you pick me up today.”
“I missed you too, buddy. I see somebody else came to see you?”
“Oh, Stacie. She wants to take me home but daddy said you pick me up.”
“Yeah, okay. Do you want to wait a second while I talk to her?”
Jamie nodded, moving to stand next to her (small hand clutched in hers, of course) while Y/N greeted Stacie. Well, greet was a bit of an exaggeration; she didn’t get to before Stacie decided to introduce herself first.
“I’m his mom, I called Harry in the morning telling him I’d come for pick up. I have a packed schedule, so I’d appreciate it if you could let go of my child.”
Y/N almost laughed, the audacity of this woman a damn near mystery to her. “Wait. Don't talk about him like some sort of property. Harry never told me about anyone else coming to pick up Jamie.”
“He must’ve forgotten. He’s a busy man, I’m sure he would confirm—“
“Well then let’s call him, shall we?”
Stacie wanted to interject, she could tell, but Y/N had dialed way too fast for that to happen. The phone only had to ring once before Harry picked up, his voice coming in clear.
“Hey, you‘ve got Jamie?”
“I’m here at preschool but Stacie showed up before me and wants to take him home. You didn’t tell me, so I…” she trailed off, hoping he’d fill in the blanks.
It seemed to take a minute to click. “Stacie? His mother showed up at school?”
“Yes, was this arranged beforehand or…”
“No. No, don’t let her take him home. Shit, we talked about this last week, I don’t—“
“You… you talked about this last week?” The confusion dripped from Y/N’s voice and all she could hear was Harry’s attempt at concealing profanities. “What did you talk about last week?”
“It doesn’t matter. Just get home, tell her to call me to clear this up. I don’t want Jamie knowing Stacie is his mother yet, okay? So just get out of there before she tells him herself.”
A frown settled over Y/N’s features before she continued to end the call, scoop Jamie up into her arms and walk away after quick word. Stacie protested, but both her and Y/N knew she wouldn’t do much more than that in fear of causing a scene.
Y/N failed to pay attention to Jamie as she fastened the belt on his seat, only registering when she looked back into the rearview mirror and noticed the little pout starting to pull at his small lips.
And when he finally asked her, little quips of fear polishing his quiet tone:  “is Stacie my mum?”, all Y/N could do was pretend she hadn’t heard and hope he would forget, knowing he wouldn’t.
Y/N bombarded Harry with questions the second he‘d unlocked that front door.
“Y/N—“
“No, I’m entitled to know this time. I’m entitled to know when she ambushes us at preschool. Don’t you want me to know what I’m dealing with if it happens again? That woman almost fucking kidnapped him—“
“Calm down, Y/N. Sit down and I’ll explain it to you.”
She huffed in annoyance, listening nonetheless. She set herself down on one of the kitchen stools and tried to take control of her breathing. She watched as he took a seat opposite her.
“Stacie came to visit last week on Wednesday. She’d called beforehand, asking if it would be okay. She came and we had dinner, we talked some things out while Jamie was in bed. She apologized, asked if we could start working things out again. I agreed under the condition that she would approach the idea of Jamie as a friend first. She said that she would respect my wishes and that she wouldn’t come near him unless I gave my permission. That’s it. So far all Jamie knows is that she’s a friend of mine. I didn’t—god,” Y/N felt bad when Harry buried his head in his hands, itching to reach out in comfort. She chose to play it safe, settling a gentle touch over his thigh. “I know I should’ve known but it seemed real when we spoke last, you know? I didn’t think she’d do this.”
Y/N hadn’t seen Harry this distraught over anything. “I’m sorry. That’s heavy.”
“It’s—“ he sighed, “it’s something I keep having to deal with. All she wants is to have him on the weekends, have him pose as her cute son. But she doesn’t actually care about him.”
Y/N couldn’t do much more than nod. She was caught between playing the comforting role and being honest. She wasn’t sure if this was the place, if her opinion would be welcomed or if it would contribute to Harry’s sorrows. “She seemed… uncooperative when I spoke to her at school. Like she was in a rush or something, it scared me.”
“Yeah, she’s hardheaded.”
“Right.” Y/N pulled her hand away when Harry lifted his head, clearing her throat and averting her eyes. The change in her behavior didn’t go unnoticed, though he knew he shouldn’t ask. “So when you talked… when you agreed to working things out, you meant that in a friendly manner? Or were you going to be… a couple again?”
“We… I don’t know. We kissed— well, she kissed me a few days ago when we met up again for a playdate with Jamie. Never discussed it any further.”
“Do you love her?”
Y/N had begun to hold her breath in, but she didn’t notice it.
Harry did. He noticed the suction of a deep breath and he noticed how his own hands got clammy with sweat.
Harry looked skeptical, as though there was something on his tongue ready to peek out tentatively, only it couldn’t because he had to spare her feelings. Because there was little Y/N, intimidated by everything she’d ever had to face in her lifetime— little Y/N who had rejected him and still expected loyalty. Little Y/N who couldn’t have him, but had always wanted to.
“I think a part of me will always love her. I mean, she gave me Jamie and he’s… the best thing to ever happen to me, really. I love him, and I will always love her for giving birth to him. I will always love her for the good parts of our relationship.”
Y/N hated herself for hating his answer. It was a perfectly reasonable answer, truthful as Y/N expected, yet her mind wandered past the barriers, past the barbed wire. She couldn’t fully grasp how he could still love her— and yet she understood perfectly. There was Jamie, of course, but there were many other things. There was her hair, her bright complexion, the beautiful curve of her hips and the effortless look of her makeup. There was the fashion, the business-casual look that seemed to mesh so well with Harry’s. There was this calling when Y/N pictured the two of them standing side by side, almost like they were destined to be together. She could imagine it perfectly, the many years they had spent together. She could see it. And it looked perfect.
Y/N coughed, head nodding along to his words as if she were listening to instructions and not some heartfelt confession. It seemed instinctual, though.
When it came time for her to speak, she let a smile mold her lips into a perfect crescent moon. She never thought faking a smile could hurt more than a physical injury, but she’d been proven wrong. Everything looked intact— Y/N was sure she almost seemed unaffected from the outside. She wasn’t, though, and she wondered if Harry would recognize that.
“That’s… yeah. I get that.”
This was the first time Y/N actually felt the age gap between her and Harry. He sat here, ready to air it out. He spoke about his concerns, about the state of his son, and the only thing she could fret about was herself. Her sadness had no weight, it was too insignificant in comparison to his and it made her feel pathetic. It made her feel young and stupid and pathetic.
Harry deserved better than this. He deserved careful consideration, security for his child. He deserved trust and honesty, a sort of transparency Y/N couldn’t afford to offer to him yet.
“That’s not to say that I want to approach her in that way, especially after today, but…” he trailed off, only finding his words when it’d clicked that she wasn’t responding, “I just want you to understand that it’s complicated.”
Y/N nodded. Then she cleared her throat, ready to rid herself of this spotlight. She always messed up in the spotlight.  “Um, Jamie asked me if Stacie was his mum today. I didn’t answer, but you might want to think about what you’ll say to say to him next time. I also sent you a few résumés, I’ve talked to a few people and have set up interviews, the first one is scheduled for tomorrow—“ she visibly flinched when his hand came down on her thigh, “please, Harry. I can’t. Please just let me finish this.”
“Okay.”
A deep breath, “it’s scheduled for tomorrow after you come home from work. Do you want me to come on the call, or are you okay interviewing yourself?”
“I’d like you to come.”
“Okay. I’ll stay longer tomorrow.”
“Can we talk about us now? Properly?”
“There’s nothing to talk about.”
Harry almost laughed, “there’s a lot to talk about. We just added on a good bit today.”
“I’m quitting. That’s it.”
“You know, I don’t understand why you insist that there’s nothing going on—“
“Because there isn’t,” she snapped. “There isn’t. I’m going to check up on Jamie.”
She was teary-eyed as she slipped from the stool, ready to conceal it all for the ball of sunshine sitting in the living room. She could do it all for Jamie— she would do it all.
Before he could say any more, Y/N disappeared behind the door. Harry could hear the two of them converse in the next room and his heart felt heavy as the gravity of the situation dawned on him. Harry had always known what to do— he was a CEO, for god’s sake. He was trained to find solutions, take control of seemingly unfixable problems, to make life easy. And yet, this girl thoroughly baffled him. He had no idea what the fuck to do anymore.
And yet, he was determined to keep trying.
Two people had interviewed over zoom and Harry had hated every one of them. His excuses were vague, something about the lack of experience (even though they both knew that Y/N hadn’t had any when she’d started either) and the supposed ‘wrong vibe’. One time he’d criticized a woman for her ‘ridiculously shrill voice’, at which point Y/N had rolled her eyes and proceeded to walk home in a fury.
The next day Y/N showed up again, ready to interview three more people. She sat beside Harry as he set up the video call and listened as he asked questions. Y/N was mostly in attendance to listen and give her honest feedback by the end (she really did want to find someone spectacular for Jamie), so the difficult part came later. For now she could be quiet.
This woman, aside from qualified, seemed very kind. So far, it’d been the best candidate.
“So how flexible is time for you?”
“Very. I do online classes for uni, so I can very well manage my time how I see fit.”
“That sounds fine. And you’ve had plenty of experience, I see.”
“Yes, I started babysitting when I was fourteen, so for more than ten years now. The last family I worked for just moved out of the country, which is why I’m looking for something new, but I was with them three years.”
This woman had nothing but good evidence she would be the best for the job; no doubt better than Y/N. She had the experience, she seemed mature, she looked kind— she would act in a professional manner, something Y/N had never quite figured out yet.
That didn’t matter to Harry, though, because as soon as she’d gotten off the call, he muttered a ‘no’.
“Why not?” Y/N asked, bewildered by his blunt response, “she was literally perfect for the job.”
Harry lifted his shoulders in a shrug, busying himself with his laptop, “just didn’t feel right.”
“Okay, this is just getting too unreasonable at this point. You didn’t like the lack of experience, fine, that one woman’s shrill voice, fine— but this? She just didn’t feel right?”
“I don’t expect you to understand—“
“No. We’re not doing that.”
“It’s a feeling, Y/N. When I interviewed you, I got the feeling that it’s right, that I’d feel safe leaving Jamie with you. It takes trust.”
“But she’s— she’s so qualified, she—“
“Experience isn’t everything. It’s important, but not everything. You weren’t experienced when you came for your interview but you gave me the right feeling. Thus you were qualified for the job.”
And she understood, really, but it still fucking pissed her off. “That’s fucking— you’re being too picky.”
“For good reason.”
“At least two of the people we interviewed were qualified enough for a test run.”
“We still have about fifteen to go and there’s no rush.”
Y/N found this ridiculous. She muttered under her breath, pushing some hair back with a sweaty palm.
“Why is it that everything I do makes you angry?”
“Because you’re fucking infuriating.”
He breathed a chuckle, “that’s nice,” and closed his laptop. “Are you hungry?”
“No.”
“Don’t lie to me. I’ll make your favorite pasta.”
“I don’t—“ but Harry had already gotten to work, tuning her voice out without much trouble. He smiled at her, almost mocking.
“Do you have another job lined up?“
“Uh,” Y/N didn’t want to admit no, that she hadn’t even begun looking properly (save for that one café down the street from her apartment), knowing the consequences and aware of the tiring reprimanding from Harry ahead. A pitied glance. A pathetic speech. “I’ve applied.”
“Where?”
“A cafe.”
“Where?”
“You wouldn’t know it.”
“Are you hired?”
She huffed, “no.”
“Where else?”
“Um, a… another café. It’s in... near my apartment.”
“Would be bad if it wasn’t,” he quipped, paying her a shortened glance from over his cooking pot. “Do you need help?”
“No.”
“Financial help, maybe?”
Y/N groaned, “no.”
“Because I wouldn’t mind sending you some money—“
“Harry,” she cut him off in an instant, glaring daggers at him, “I’ll just send it back. I’ve saved up enough to get by for a few weeks.“
“That doesn’t exactly ease my—“
“Can we just— can we not?”
And they didn’t. Harry closed his mouth— forced it closed, actually— having to clench his jaw to stop himself from voicing unwanted thoughts.  Y/N looked away, pretending this conversation hadn’t happened at all. It was easier that way, to pretend he hadn’t conveyed such an open and honest display of care, to pretend that it hadn’t ripped her heart to shreds.
There was so much he wanted to say, but he couldn't. It was the first time in a while that Y/N stayed (somewhat voluntarily) after her shift, and he couldn't risk pushing her away further.
For now, he had to be okay with this.
Y/N couldn‘t keep her eyes off of Harry, images of last night flashing in between conflicting thoughts.
She was in bed. She was clutching her blanket, a wet spot and the outline of her body marked by sweat on the sheets. He‘d looked so real fucking her, he‘d sounded so genuine whispering into her ear as he thrust up into her cunt.
He‘d called her a good girl, and she‘d run with it, afraid to look back.
But it hadn‘t been real, had it?
It‘d been a dream. But god, was it a good one.
Would he do it all the same? Would be hold her close, spreading his fingers over the expanse of her breast as he kissed her neck? Would he glide them up, and wrap them around her throat? Would he— fuck. No. She couldn’t.
But he would. And they‘d look so pretty resting there. And she‘d feel so pretty as he overwhelmed her with his presence, his chest pressing against hers. He‘d look so right as he danced along the fine line of praise and degradation— the line of rough and sweet, cold and warm. Because he would know. He would know exactly what she would need.
Wouldn‘t he?
He would. As she watched him move through the space of his living room, she knew he would. She‘d always known, really.
And Jamie wasn’t here anymore, he’d fled up the stairs. And Y/N really, really shouldn’t be here with him alone.
She was biting on her nails, eyes cast downwards in avoidance as Harry read his book on the other end of the couch. He had an arm stretched along the back of the couch and her legs were tucked to her chest as she scrolled on her phone, trying her hardest not to let her gaze run wild. It proved especially difficult when his arm fell mere inches from her legs. And when he touched her, warm thumb rubbing comforting circles into the cold of her skin, she couldn’t help biting her lip.
“You okay?”
“Hm? Yes. Why?”
A smile stretched his mouth wide, “just seem distracted, is all. Squirmy.”
“What? No, I’m fine.”
God, she was feeling small under his gaze.
“You sure?”
“Yes,” she mumbled. Harry saw her eyes, though, tired dark circles resting where they don’t belong. He saw how they widened, how desperate they seemed for something she didn’t want to disclose to him and he wanted so badly to satisfy that need for her. “I should go home.”
His grip tightened ever so slightly. “Would you like me to drive you?”
“Um, no. It’s okay. Thank you.”
But she failed to move.
Y/N had shut him out for so long that the effect he’d always had on her multiplied by ten. It was much much worse and the finger on her leg burned through her skin with ease.
“Sweetheart?”
“Hm?”
“Come here,” he demanded softly, watching as a war unfolded on her face. He could read her like a book, sensing the exact moment her heart won and her head gave up. He pulled her to him, fingers dancing up and down her shoulder. “You seem tired.”
Y/N cleared her throat, tips of fingers holding onto the edge of safety and threatening to let her cascade into the depths of danger. “I had three classes in the morning and I’ve been writing this paper, so—“ she allowed him control as he made her face the other way, legs outstretched, her back just inches from his chest and his hands massaging her tense shoulders. Her eyes closed in pleasure at the sensation. “And last night, I—“
“Last night you what?”
“I had… I had this dream and—“
She didn’t want to finish and he didn’t need her to.
“Is this okay?”
His voice felt soft and comfortable against her neck. “Yes, thank you. You’re good at that.”
He hummed.
“I really should go home though,” she mumbled, getting quieter with each word. She knew she wouldn’t dare push him away now, but she supposed it was more about convincing herself that she’d tried. “Cause I have classes early in the morning.”
“It’s only seven.”
“Yeah.”
Harry snickered quietly, her awful try at resistance not surprising him in the least. He had never seen her quite like this though, weak and smitten in his arms, on the verge of purring like a cat.  He definitely couldn’t complain when she inched closer and dropped her head so it could rest comfortably on his shoulder.
“Can you do my arms?”
“Of course, baby.”
She could’ve melted. In fact, she probably had without noticing.
And when she felt his lips pressing to her skin… well, then it was game over.
“Is this okay?”
She nodded promptly, heart racing.
Y/N was tired of rejecting this feeling, tired of pretending as though she didn’t want Harry’s affection. Because truly, it was all she wanted, all she’d longed for.
A love like his would feel so great.
“You look really beautiful, you know that?”
“Thank you,” she squeaked, sensing Harry’s chuckle rolling against her back at the response.
“I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you.”
“Me neither.”
“You’re the one who keeps running.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
Y/N took her time answering, grateful when Harry didn’t rush her. He would sit here waiting for an hour if he needed to, she was confident in that. There was no hurry, just soft hands on scalps and warm kisses on necks— Y/N hadn’t experienced such an overwhelming feeling of comfort in the arms of a man.
“I’m scared to stay.”
He sounded unfazed, giving her a surge of confidence when he asked, “why?”
“Because we’re such different people. You’re a dad, a very accomplished ceo. I’m a student, so much younger—“
“Don’t make me out to be so old, love.”
Her eyes rolled. “A little younger than you. And last week when I saw Stacie, I don’t know… it did something with my brain, I guess. You seemed so right together, you know? I didn’t want you to wake up one day and regret anything, don’t think I could bear that.”
“Look at me,” he muttered, tilting her head so that he could pin her down with a stern stare, “I couldn’t regret you, sweetheart. I regret much in life, but I wouldn’t regret you.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Eh, I’m a pretty good judge of character.”
“Harry,” she warned, “I’m not the most lovable person once you get to know me.”
“I doubt that,” he retorted.
“Past experiences have proven as much.”
He gave gentle strokes to her cheek, a glaze he didn‘t expect overcoming her eyes, pulling him in, “so let me show you.”
Y/N’s breath hitched, his nose mere inches away from hers. “Show me what?”
“How easy it is to love you.”
Time stood still, but it couldn’t not have with a statement of that kind. It seemed so easy for him to brush off concerns as something undeserving of thought, to create an allusion of simplicity where it didn‘t belong. Those words meant everything to her.
“You must know how wonderful that sounds coming from your mouth.”
Harry breathed a chuckle, nose nudging against hers softly. When he asked for permission, Y/N couldn’t deny him of another kiss.
And if it could’ve gotten any better than their first kiss, then it definitely had. There was a newfound sense of freedom and security with this kiss, unspoken thoughts reduced to small details rather than what had been when they’d spent time together last.
When they parted, nothing needed to be said. They already knew it all.
A month later.
“Y/N, will you hand me another bowl for the soup, please?”
As Y/N fulfilled Harry’s plea, she couldn’t help but let her giddiness dictate her movements. Things were fresh, things were good— but they were also scary. He was scary. Anxious butterflies spread in her lower tummy at the mention of his name and infested it with the low sound of his voice.
She waited by his side as he tidied up, ready to be of assistance. It was pathetic, really, how awfully smitten she’d become for him.
“Thank you, sweetheart.”
She hummed in reply, scared that if she were to speak all that would come out was a squeak. Harry chuckled, smirk molding into his cheekbones as he grasped Y/N by the waist and pushed his lips against hers in a gentle kiss. His hand slid lower, giving her a squeeze.
“Are you nervous?”
“Yeah.”
“It’ll be great, I promise. And whatever he says, we’ll work it out.”
“Okay,” a surge of confidence rode her to sunny dry shores, shoulders sacking in comfort, “yeah, okay. I trust you.”
“You ready then?”
“Yes.”
Things proceeded as they always had; Y/N and Jamie shared funny anecdotes of their day as Harry mostly listened, admiring the two of them with love filling his eyes. It wasn’t until desert had come that the setting changed, unbeknownst to Jamie, and Harry took the lead.
“Jamie, we want to talk to you about something.”
Jamie stared between the two of them, waiting.
“Do you remember when you came home from school and told me about Katie and Josh? That they’re boyfriend girlfriend?”
“Yes, they still are.”
Harry chuckled, “and do you remember what I said when you asked if I had a girlfriend?”
“You said that you don’t.”
“I did. And while that may have been true for that moment, things have changed.”
Her heart melted and sank all the same when his little green eyes lit up, “do you have a girlfriend now?”
“I do,” Harry laughed, “you know her.”
“Who?”
Harry smirked, motioning to Y/N with a nod of his head to draw Jamie’s attention away. Jamie’s gaze landed on Y/N and in the matter of a second it filled with excitement. His mouth dropped open in surprise.
“Are you okay with that?” She asked, timid at first but becoming more confident when a genuine smile imprinted small dimples in his cheeks, a feature he’d been lucky enough to receive from his father.
He nodded, full of movement, and hummed in confirmation.
When Y/N and Harry had put Jamie into bed later that night, and had vacated to the kitchen to enjoy a glass of wine together, things finally fell into place. The thought of happiness within a relationship was no longer a distant one— no, it had become a reality. Harry had kept up with his promise, he had shown her easy, he’d shown her effortless, and while there was no doubt in her mind that hard times were still to come, she was confident that no matter the circumstance, her gratitude for his open portrayal of love could never be put into question.
“I love you,” she shared, eyes glassy, head tilted. “You don’t have to say it back, but I just want you to know. I think I’ve loved you for quite some time, I just didn’t want to realize it.”
The silence was short lived.
He placed his glass back down on the table and smiled, though to her it almost looked awkward. “Wow.”
“I know, you don’t have to… cause I know it’s a big deal, so you don’t have to say anything.”
“I do too,” he then offered, hand traveling to rest on her knee. “I love you.”
“Really?”
“I do.”
This stumped her.
And now it was her turn: “wow.”
Harry’s laughter spread everywhere on Y/N’s skin, engraving itself into her soul and staying there to be kept and remembered forever.
“Good. Now that that’s cleared…”
She couldn’t deny him of a passionate make-out session, hands on thighs and lips everywhere they fit, everywhere they felt right. A moan slipped from her mouth, his smirk molded into her hot skin.
“Move in with me,” he muttered, dirty against her mouth, “we’re finding a new nanny for Jamie and you don’t have a new job planned yet. Just focus on university, move in with me, with us. Let me take care of you.“
“Harry—“ his mouth collided against her neck, her eyes closed shut, “I don’t know if that’s a good idea.”
“Why?”
“We’ve only been together—“
“Doesn’t matter, I’ve fought for a long time to have you. I believe in us, I trust this.”
“I…“ Y/N felt torn— on one hand, she really wanted to move in with him. On the other, was that really wise? To move in with a man after a month of dating him? Albeit this was Harry, and she trusted him too. Fully. It was herself she didn’t trust. “Are you sure?”
And when she looked into his eyes, there was no not one ounce of doubt in them. They welcomed her.
“Jamie would love it just as much as me.”
“Would he?”
“Are you kidding me? He loves you so much.”
“I love him too,” she played with a strand of his hair.
“Then move in with us.”
A smile began to pull at her lips. “But I pay for groceries.”
“No,” he mumbled, “you’re too broke for me to let you do that.”
“Harry!”
“It’s true!” He laughed, massaging her thigh. “Baby, I don’t expect you to pay for anything living here. I’m more than capable—“
“I know you’re capable, but I just… I was taught not to burden other people.”
“You’re not burdening me,” he insisted, finger sliding under her chin, “it’s okay to let other people do things for you. It’s okay for others to show their love.”
“I know that.”
“So please don’t worry about it. Focus on your studies and make me proud in that way.”
“I need to make money somehow.”
“No you don’t. I’ll support you.”
“No,” she breathed right away, “I won’t depend on you for money. You’re not my… my sugar daddy.”
“Why not?” He grinned, “you call me daddy either way—“
Y/N’s eyes rolled, “shut up.”
“Told you not to roll your eyes at me.”
“Sorry.”
Harry hummed, “try it for a month. If you want to move in after, you can. If you don’t, I’ll help you find a new place. Or I’ll pay your rent while you’re here so you don’t lose out on money.”
Comfortable silence dictated the next few seconds as Y/N thought about her boyfriend’s offer, and then: “fine. We’ll try it for a month.”
Harry’s smile widened, “yeah?”
“Yes.”
“You won’t regret it."
He'd been right.

Tumblr media
Melissa would never admit to anyone how much she liked the effect she had on you. She loved to watch your head duck down nervously when she complimented you or guided you along with a hand on your lower back. Every single time she left the light tremor of your body, but not once did she mention it. You were glad she couldn’t feel your heartbeat the moment her attention was on you.
The first time she noticed it changed her entire perspective on you.
Melissa wasn’t the kind to talk to the new hires, the turnover rates at Abbott were laughable and they never stayed more than a couple of months. But after a few months, she started to pay attention. Over time, she got to see just how much you really cared for the kids. She had stopped by to ask if you had an extra purple whiteboard marker, but she was met with the sight of you kneeling in front of one of your students, big, sad tears in her eyes. She could just barely hear the mutterings of I know it hurts sweetie and the one that made a little smile cross her lips, of course I have shark band-aids, what am i? A chump? She sees you start to stand to grab the bandage and decides to move now before she gets caught staring.
Right as she steps close to you, you rise and spin around. Your action staggers as you notice her form too late, and nearly falling as you try to avoid running into her, nearly. Strong hands grasp your upper arms, saving you from landing flat on your ass.
Your head tilts up to face her, finally registering that it was Melissa. It takes you a second to breathe before you let out a little, “thank you.”
“Of course, hon. My fault anyways,” she says with a small smile. There’s an almost too long pause before she realizes her hands are still on your arms, dropping them immediately to fold them across her chest. You’re almost in a daze just looking at her, but you have to keep up appearances.
“Did you need something?” You say with a soft smile. Melissa noticed how your eyes never left hers for a second after she called you hon, she also thinks that you’d never looked her in the eyes before then. It had never gone unnoticed that you always looked at her bangs or the frame of her glasses whenever you’d spoken before.
Interesting... Melissa thinks to herself.
And then Melissa began to see a pattern.
You’d given her the extra dollar she needed for her iced tea, four quarters stacked tails-up in front of her. She didn’t ask anyone, only sighed when she checked her purse.
“Thanks sweetheart,” Melissa said without really thinking.
Your eyes widen for a fraction of a second before you catch yourself, accompanied by a quick inhale. Licking your lips and averting your eyes from her, you quietly say, “yeah. of course, anytime.”
Barbara must notice Melissa’s intrigue suddenly and speaks up, “dear, why don’t you come sit with us? I don’t think we’ve gotten a chance to know each other just yet.”
This marked the start of yours and Melissa’s friendship.
“You got plans Saturday?” Melissa says as she pours a cup of coffee into her Tucci mug.
You look up from your phone and take a breath in, “I have lunch with my cousin at noon, but I’m free later on. Why, what do you have planned?”
“That flea market’s coming back around, the one with the good antiques and the petting zoo,” you almost speak but she cuts you off, “oh, and that apple cider you liked.”
You smile at her remembering that detail before responding, “yeah, that sounds perfect. I can text you when I leave the diner.” Your voice thankfully doesn’t seem to give away how nervous you were trying not to seem. You take a sip from your mug to hide yourself for a moment.
“Great. I’m looking forward to it, babe,” she says through a sip of her own coffee. She stays just long enough to watch you nearly choke on your tea, and then slips out to walk to her classroom with a satisfied smirk on her face.
At the development week meeting, she turned to see you looking around for a place to sit. When you miss her wave to get your attention, she decides to yell your name across the gymnasium to get you to look in her direction. Your head whips her way, a grateful smile on your face when you see her waving you over. She decidedly loves the shy smile that was reserved for only her.
Stepping over nurse Makiah to get to the free seat, you finally plop down next to the redhead. Something possesses Melissa and her arm moves on its own to rest across the back of your seat, hand resting on your arm. She feels you stiffen for a moment, almost thinking she’d overstep, but you relax into her touch.
“You didn’t have to save me a seat. These are prime real estate to bleacher-leaners,” you mumble to her as one of the eighth grade teachers goes on about something that wasn’t as important as her fingers tracing little patterns over your shirt.
Melissa chuckles lightly, squeezing your shoulder lightly. She leans in to answer, “but then I wouldn’t have you sitting here, tesoro.” Your eyes go to your lap as you fail to hide the smile from her words, making the redhead’s heart rate pick up.
“You’re too nice to me, Schemmenti,” you say as you lift your head, with what little courage you have, to look at her and smile, leaning into her for a second.
Then an idea struck Melissa
Tuesday was vending machine restock day. Tuesday was your new least favorite day of the week. Totally unrelated.
Gary, the vending machine guy, had started a habit of flirting with Melissa. He started with giving her a free iced tea straight from the truck, and then chatting, then complimenting, and then just straight up checking her out with no shame. Every time he entered the room, your voice died in your throat, and your eyes stayed trained on him with a special kind of hatred. You were at least thankful Melissa hadn’t noticed the rage you felt when he had a conversation with her breasts. Melissa, in fact, did notice.
She watched how you stared daggers into his back as he spoke to her, completely unaware of her attention flicking to you every now and then. Your fork angrily stabbed at the lunch she’d brought you, not a single bite being taken since the vendor walked in the door. The more forward Gary got, the quieter and angrier you became. Once he left and Melissa’s focus went back to you entirely, as it always was, your shoulders relaxed and the assault on the pasta stopped.
Melissa decides she has a theory to test. She plays into Gary’s flirting some more, enough that the man is clearly picking up on it, and your hand stills. By the third week, Barbara is begging her to go on a date with the man.
“Girl, he likes you. You should give it a shot, he’s a nice man. Handsome too,” Barbara says with enthusiasm. Your eyes roll as you look at your phone, trying to tune out this conversation. Your resolve cracks a little when Ava mumbles that’s generous in response to Barbara’s comment, a tiny chuckle espacing you.
The kindergarten teacher nudges your hand, “don’t you think she should go for it?”
You struggle with trying to not just flat out say no so instead you settle with, “yeah. Gary seems really nice.” The thin smile on your face is unconvincing to both women, and it’s easy to read on both their faces. You quickly grab your stuff and stand, “I’m gonna head back to my room and pass out their math quizzes. I’ll see you later.”
Once the door closes behind you, Barbara looks at Melissa, “what was that?”
Melissa just shrugs, feigning obliviousness.
When Gary finally gets the nerve to ask her out, she laughs and agrees. You think the gods above must have it out for you, not letting you escape any interaction between the two. The fork in your hand just stabs harder at the food in the tupperware. After watching with a tinge of regret, Melissa finally speaks up.
“You alright over there, gioia?” She asks, her voice filled with real concern. You look at her for a moment, considering what to say, but settle with a nod. When your gaze drops again, you miss her lips dipping into a small frown.
Monday morning after the big date, you realize that being in the lounge was a mistake. You should have known to go straight to your classroom, but the need to see Melissa overrode your actions.
As you walked in, everyone was facing Melissa and asking her about every little detail of the date. Where’d they go? Was the food good? Did he offer to pay it all or ask to split the bill? What did she wear? She gives them all they want to hear, and only Ava asks what you didn’t want to know.
“Cut the bull. Did you let him hit or not?”
A chorus of AVA! goes around the room.
The redhead just sighs before answering, “why did you say it like that? And no, I did not ‘let him hit,’ Ava.” You hate that some tension leaves your shoulders after that. The rest of the time is spent with your eyes trained at the floor and ringing in your ears.
Melissa regrets her idea a lot more when she stops seeing your smile altogether and your eyes stop meeting hers.
She finally snaps.
Janine had planned to make a whole outing for the Abbott crew, inviting everyone out to a new arcade-bar that Erica had told her about. She’d told Melissa that she should invite Gary, saying that everyone wanted to meet him in a social setting and not just in the ten minutes he was in the school every Tuesday. Inviting Gary couldn’t hurt, she reasoned.
Gary’s phone went to voicemail for the fifth time and all eight of her texts were unanswered. He said he would come, that he wanted to meet everyone for real, but now he was a no show. Melissa felt like a teenager again, getting stood up by her date to homecoming while she waited outside for him. She turned to walk back in, almost running into you as you were coming to check on her.
“Everything alright?” You ask, knowing the answer already since she can’t hide her emotions well when she’s upset.
She huffs a laugh, “peachy. Jackass said he would be here almost an hour ago and won’t return my calls or anything.”
“Want me to beat him up for you?” You ask jokingly, but there’s a certain hope she’ll say yes that sits in your chest. Your heart almost can’t handle it when she smiles at your words, arm looping with yours as she drags you to the pinball machines.
You’d probably lost a student-loan payment in quarters by the time either of you had even won a single game you played. In the course of two hours, both of you had only managed to get a collective hundred tickets that could maybe win you each an eraser. Melissa pretends to not notice you cheating in the driving games, and you pretend not to notice her taking quarters from your cup.
You watch an equally competitive Ava and Melissa play a scary-good match of air hockey, each of them likely to have bruises on their knuckles by the end of the night from how hard they played. Each time she scored, the redhead’s eyes moved to you for approval, and each time she’s met with a little applause and smile from you.
“Wasn’t your man supposed to be here? Or were the Kit-Kats not behaving?” Ava says when they finally take a break from the game to take a drink.
Melissa just shrugs, “he hasn’t answered anything. If the gavone decides to say anything, then he’ll be getting an earful, or a bat to the head. Depends on what he says.”
“Do you even like this idiot?” Ava asks incredulously, saying exactly what you’d been thinking for weeks since they’d had their first date.
Melissa shrugs, “he’s alright. The first date was nice, but the rest have just been him trying to get in my pants.”
“Well,” Ava’s brows bounced a couple times, “are you gonna let him in or not?”
You check out entirely before listening to Melissa’s answer, not even caring how suddenly you left the conversation, just letting your legs carry you until you could finally breathe. You find yourself back with the old pinball machines that no one but you and Melissa had played. Only a few seconds of silence manages to pass before you hear the muffled stomp of boots on carpet, stopping right behind you.
“You gonna tell me what that was?” Melissa asks with your back facing her.
You should have known it was her that would follow you. Part of you wanted to lie and say that the drinks made you feel sick, but you both knew that they were too watered down to even intoxicate a toddler. The other part of you just wanted to scream about how it should be you on those dates with her, driving her home and walking her to the door. You turned to meet her eyes and any courage you had left, feeling like putty when she was so focused on you and you alone. Even though you know what her response will be, you just say, “it was nothing. I’ll be back inside in a minute.”
“It wasn’t nothing,” she says, stepping closer, “you’ve been doing that a lot lately. Just... I dunno, just leaving. You can be in the same room as me and it feels like you’re miles away.”
Your gaze drops to your feet, suddenly feeling insecure now that you know she’s noticed your behavior. You put all your energy into stabling your voice and keeping your lips from quivering at the thought of upsetting her. All you can muster in a tiny voice is, “I’m sorry.”
Melissa surprises you by pulling you into a tight hug, whispering to you, “is this about Gary?” Your heart stops at her words, knowing you’d been found out. The lack of answer and the way your body stiffens tells Melissa everything she needs to know, what she already knew.
Melissa knows that you’ll likely try to explain away anything the second she loosens her hold on you, that you’ll run and she’ll never get this close ever again. So she does the only thing that she can think of at this moment.
As she pulls away, Melissas hands cup your face, pulling you into her lips. Your eyes nearly bulge out of your head as you feel her lips press against yours, soft and eager. After a moment, she realizes you’re not kissing her back, her heart cracking as she pulls away from you, ready to run. Her hands drop from your face, eyes blinking rapidly as doubt clouds her mind. Your mind catches up, realizing what had just happened. Melissa begins to turn to leave, but is stopped by your hand in hers. You tug her back to you, cupping her face and leaning forward to finally kiss her back.
She tasted like lipstick and watery vodka, her hands were warm against your wrists where they held tightly. Your mind was in hyperdrive as you took in her lips and her touch, hardly noticing her moving you until your hips met the game behind you. Melissa’s lips parted, her tongue brushing across your bottom lip to ask for entry. You were quick to allow her in, letting her dominate your lips as her hands dropped to grab at your waist. The taste of her lips and tongue became quickly addictive, the feeling even more so. Your hands migrate from her face to her hair, pulling her even closer to you as the kiss turns sloppy from the sheer desperation radiating from both of you.
Melissa’s hands grab at your hips harder as you tug at copper strands, cold fingers creeping under your shirt to rest against warm skin. The force of her body leaning further into you boggles the machine you’re pressed against making a loud buzzer sound and the automated voice yell just a quarter to play! The sudden noises make you both jump, breaking the kiss. Your eyes meet and you both stifle a laugh at the whole thing. Her lips immediately gravitate back to yours, this time softer. The smile you feel against your lips brings your own out, breaking the kiss again. You drop your head against her shoulder, basking in her presence and her hands on your skin.
“You knew,” is all you say, voice muffled against her shirt.
She smiles and rests her head against yours, “I did.”
“How long?”
“The whole time, give or take,” she’s a little surprised when your head pops up, almost smacking her chin.
Your eyes stare straight into hers, “and you said nothing?”
“You didn’t say shit either, don’t even start,” she says with a laugh, no malice hiding in her voice. Her only response is a grumble that sounds something like touché.
There’s so much love behind your eyes, it chokes her up. The way your eyes never left hers, something she missed in the last month, made her feel like the most precious stone. She looks at you for a moment longer before quietly asking, “can I kiss you again?”
The smallest smile crosses your lips as you answer in an equally quiet tone, “you can kiss me whenever you want, Schemmenti.”
feedback appreciated as always <3

but i'm not her
₊˚ପ⊹ summary: reader is part of spider society and in this multiverse you have soulmates, miguel is your soulmate but you aren’t his
₊˚ପ⊹ warnings: angst, lots of angst, death, betrayal, plot twist!!
₊˚ପ⊹ relationship: miguel x fem!spider-reader
₊˚ପ⊹ wc: 1.5k
you were invited to the spider society when an anomaly entered your world and after wrapping up the fight you were greeted by the leader of the spider-society who had offered you a spot on the team which you had happily obliged to.
at first, it took some time to get used to all the different spider-people who were just like you, there were all sorts of variants, animals, peni’s, gwen’s, miles, and a ton of peter parker’s.
but the one that stood out to you the most was spider-man 2099, miguel o’hara.
sure he was a cold fella when you first met him but he had to have another side to him right?
over the next year or so you started to crack miguel’s shield until you two began to lean on each other for support.
one night that stood out very clearly in your memory between the two of you was a night when you had almost lost your life during a fight.
“y/n, are you crazy?? if i had been one second too late you would have fallen to your death, do you realize how serious this is?”
you stared at miguel in a daze as you had felt your life flash before your eyes. your webs had jammed and you were falling from a building 50ft in the air and all that raced through your mind was that you were gonna die.
fortunately for you, miguel had caught you in a blink of an eye and was now scolding you for what had just occurred.
“okay okay i get it, it’s my fault and i’m sorry i scared you like that..”
miguel let out a loud groan before pulling you into a hug and whispering something only the two of you could hear.
“don’t ever do that again, it scared me, i care about you.”
you let out a small chuckle as you relaxed into his embrace and as you stroked his back you realized you had fallen for the stone-cold man
over the next course of the weeks, you two had practically been inseparable other than the time he spent in his universe you two were stuck like peas.
the two of you hung out so much to the point you felt like he also had feelings for you.
but you were proven wrong when she stepped into the image.
she was a girl who miguel had met in his world, she was funny, smart, and could cook! but most of all, she was another variant of you.
eventually, miguel drifted away from you and started to cozy up on the other you which left a void for you to fill with absolutely nothing.
it was heartbreaking to know that miguel loved you, just, it wasn’t you. but i mean, shocker right? the man who absolutely loves keeping the canon intact and risking it all for some relationship that could cause an anomaly? no way that was happening on his watch!
you watched in sadness as you saw the two of them getting along so happily, laughing and cracking jokes— just like how you and miguel used to.
“miguel, if you ever need someone to lean on, you know i’ve always got your back!”
miguel’s breath hitched a little at her words, it gave him a sense of deja vu, almost like he had heard it somewhere before.
before he could put a finger on the familiar sensation, he had a sense that someone was watching him and as he scanned his office as he caught sight of a spider lurking.
“mi alma, wait here for a second while i go and take care of some business okay?”
he gave his variant of you a quick kiss on the head before he swang off to go find the individual who had been spying on the couple.
"y/n, what are you doing?"
you flinched as you heard his low voice behind you and muttered a small lie.
"was just going to report a mission, usual business, sorry for interrupting."
"if there's nothing left, have to go back to my universe, kinda got something big going on!"
miguel watched as you disappeared into the orange vortex and even after several minutes you had been gone he stood in the same place waiting for you to just pop out but you never did.
"Si tan solo supieran por qué lo hice, creo que entenderían."
"the anomaly is in sight, be prepared y/n"
"alrighty, here we go lyla!!"
the anomaly was a variant of your doc ock except this one was extremely more futuristic than yours.
swinging from side to side, you manage to dodge the incoming attacks and land a few hits here and there eventually being able to slow her down.
"is that all you've got?" you yell as you disable her tentacle attachments.
unfortunately for you, that seemed to have fueled the anomaly's anger causing her to bring out some sort of technology that you've never seen before.
dodging the incoming attacks became harder and harder as fatigue started to dwell in your muscles, after a period of time, she manages to catch you off guard which resulted in you slamming straight into a building.
"holy shit, now that one sure did hurt.." you groan out in pain as you clutch your abdomen.
you pick yourself up and quickly call into your watch to call for backup as you swing yourself onto a higher building to get a good angle.
what you didn't expect for who to come was miguel, it had been quite some time since the two of you had even talked ever since that small little conversation.
it seemed he hadn't expected you to be there either as he flashed you a sort of look you couldn't quite put a finger on to what he was thinking.
"well, a little help here?" you mutter as you feel the adrenaline in your body wearing off.
before you could hear a reply he swung into action to clean up the mess you couldn't have finished which left you to catch your breath for a few seconds.
following the brief moment of rest, your watch started to chime indicating something big was happening.
"canon event happening.." you whispered as you stared at the hologram.
who's canon event? there couldn't possibly be another spider here other than you and miguel, but maybe there was, whatever it was you swung yourself back into action hoping to find miguel to explain what needed to happen in order for the canon to occur.
you saw his figure clearly 7ft away and called for him.
"MIGUEL! CANON EVENT, WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO?"
hearing your voice he gazes over at you and his mask depicts one of surprise like he hadn't seen it coming either which was odd. he manages to snap out of it and yell back at you.
"STAY OUT OF THIS Y/N, GO BACK TO HEADQUARTERS OR SOMETHING!"
your face contorts at the sudden command, rather than obliging you swing yourself into combat once more syncing with the man beside you.
it had been going oh so well, but you should have known that it was too good to be true.
just as the two of you held the villain down with your webs, some sort of green fog pursed out of its tentacles enveloping the area you and miguel had been in.
you coughed as the weird fog made you feel weak, faltering you felt yourself drifting in and out of consciousness, miguel sensed this and dropped the villain quickly into prison before rushing to your side just as your grasp loosened on your webs.
as the two of you dropped onto a ledge, miguel pulled your mask off revealing a horrifying sight. your body was bruised and battered up, the haze you consumed not making it any better.
"Joder, esto no se suponía que sucediera."
your breathing was irregular as you stared at the man whom you've loved oh so much in the past time you've been a part of the society.
"miguel, i think it's time, i just want to tell you one thing," you choke out as the oxygen flowing into you made it even harder to continue your words.
"please don't die, it wasn't supposed to be you, i thought i fixed it, i thought i changed it." he rambled as tears threaten to spill from his eyes.
you smiled softly as you understood what he meant, he wasn't trying to replace you, he was trying to save you.
"thank you for everything, thank you for inviting me to your society, i've learned many things over the years, and most of all, thank you for letting me love you."
the tears gushed out as he heard your last words, the water prickling her face, with all her remaining strength, she cupped his face and caressed it softly until her body falls limp leaving the leader of the spider society to mourn as he clenches her battered body close to his own.
"canon event completed."
₊˚ପ⊹ translations:
Si tan solo supieran por qué lo hice, creo que entenderían. - if only you knew why I did it, I think you'd understand.
Joder, esto no se suponía que sucediera - fuck, this wasn't supposed to happen

all you wanna do is kiss me - pt 2
summary: a follow up to the first part 🤭
warnings: alcohol consumption & people being tipsy
a/n: I HOPE THIS ISNT BAD LMAOO
Tumblr media
it was two nights after the grammys, and billie was fretting. you had given her your number at the end of the night, but billie was still too scared to text you. she lay in her bed, not knowing what to do. you were very nice about giving her your number - eager, almost, but billie was still too nervous? what if she said something weird? what if you didn’t want to talk to her? there were so many bad scenarios possible.
billie looked at the time. it was 5 to midnight. would you even be up? would you be asleep? were you talking to someone else? she was scared. very scared. she went downstairs and made herself some coffee, and sat at the breakfast table. she contemplated what to do. as she was scrolling through instagram, she saw you had made a new post. two images, both very risqué. the caption was just the telephone emoji. billie blushed, and took it as a sign to text you. so she did.
billie sent you a simple ‘hey’, not expecting you to reply till morning. but within five minutes you responded back with ‘who’s this?’. billie had forgotten that you had only given her your number, and you hadn’t exchanged them.
it’s billie
oh hey!! how are you?
i’m good, hbu?
the conversation continued well into the night. it was 4am when you finally said ‘look, i’ve gtg now. it’s really late.’ billie was sad but responded with ‘yeah it’s super late’. but before you went to sleep you asked her ‘would you like to come round to my house tomorrow? well, technically today.’ billie immediately typed back with ‘i’d love that’
sounds good. i’ll send you my address later. also - bring a swimsuit. we can get in my pool!
that sounds really nice! what time should i be there for?
uhhh, maybe at half 6 or 7? i’ll cook up a bit of dinner.
sounds great! see you then!
despite billie’s coolness over text, she was absolutely freaking out. dinner at your house??? getting in your pool???? she wasn’t able to sleep after that, too nervous to focus on anything else. thankfully she wasn’t doing anything that day, so she could try to figure out what to wear and should she bring anything.
fast forward to midday, billie was eating her lunch, still thinking over what she might wear? a tshirt and jeans? a dress? a jumper? the options were endless, but none seemed right. she couldn’t just ask you what to wear as well - that’d be weird. billie finished her lunch and went back up to her room to decide what to wear. as she opened her wardrobe, something caught her eye. a top she had worn from a concert she did in dublin, with marilyn monroe’s face as a pattern on it. she knew she’d wear it, but she had to find a swimsuit to wear first. she rifled through a drawer until she found a simple black one, nothing too special but nothing too drab either. she took off the pyjamas she was already wearing and stuck the swimsuit on. after that, she put on the top and paired it with some black shorts, nearly replicating the previous concert outfit.
five o’clock came quicker than billie thought, and soon after that she was on the way to your place. although you both lived in LA, you were pretty far from eachother. so billie decided to be safe rather than sorry & left early. when she got to the door, she hesitated to knock. your place was so big & modern that she was slightly intimidated by it. but after a minute of careful consideration, she knocked. you answered the door in seconds, dressed in a short dress. billie’s heart skipped a beat as you led her inside. she followed you to the kitchen, where she smelled the familiar aroma of her favourite noodle soup.
“i followed the recipe from your insta highlight,” you said, “so i hope it’s alright. i’m sure you make it better than i do.” billie thanked you for the meal as you both sat down at the table and began to eat. you talked about a lot of things… the grammys, the media, upcoming tours, etc. billie found herself falling more and more in love as the conversation went on. about 20 minutes later, billie finished her noodles at the same time you did, and again thanked you for it. you smiled and said it was no bother. “how do you fancy getting in the pool now?” you asked. “that sounds really good,” billie smiled, “i’ve got my swimsuit on under this, actually.” your smile lit up even further as you replied “i do too!”
you both got out of your clothes and hopped into the pool. “its so warm.” billie remarked. “yeah, i have heaters in it.” you said smiling. billie looked you up and down, in awe of your swimsuit that made you look like a goddess. you swam around together for a while before you left the pool, saying you’d be back in a minute. “ok, see ya in a minute.” billie replied, wondering what you were doing. billie was surprised when you came back with two wine glasses, and a bottle of a really expensive red wine. “wow,” billie said, “is this for us?” “well, who else would it be for?” you laughed. you poured the wine into the glasses, and handed billie one. she took a sip, and watched as you did the same. “it’s really good,” billie commented, “don’t think i’ve had this before.”
as the evening went on, you and billie drank more wine, and slowly got more tipsy. you smiled at billie as she told you about a song she was in the middle of recording, her face lighting up in excitement. “you’re so pretty.” you said abruptly without a warning. billie blushed. “so are you.” she responded, the alcohol making her more confident. “like- really pretty,” you went on, “super pretty.” billie didn’t know how to respond. being complimented by the woman she had a massive crush on? she was blushing like mad. “i could- i could just kiss you.” you said, a smirk on your face. billie didn’t respond as a shocked expression took over her face. you waited a few seconds before leaning in and kissing her. billie kissed back immediately, setting her glass on the side of the pool. you kissed her passionately, and she did the same. you continued like that for a while, until you were making out with eachother.
“wow.” was all billie said. “you’re a good kisser.” you remarked, a hand still on billie’s cheek. “i- i really liked that. like, really liked that.” billie confessed. “me too.” you smirked, before leaning in to kiss her again.

SNOWFALL OF HEARTS ; CORIOLANUS SNOW
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: coriolanus snow x tribue!oc part: three summar: coriolanus is torn between his harsh pursuit of victory and the growing warmth in his heart for erykah, his tribute from district 9 warnings: ooc coriolanus, murder/death (arachne), violence a/n: sorry this is a late update, been busy cause of thanksgiving! i also may or may not have watched tbosas in theaters for a second time... previous parts: one, two word count: 1.6k join taglist!!
Erykah sat behind the zoo’s bars as she waited for Coriolanus to show up. She looked around and saw many of the other mentors conversing with their tributes, most didn’t seem happy to be there. Coriolanus isn’t like that. He doesn’t act like the other mentors do.
Her thoughts began to spiral as she wondered about his real motive. What’s different about him than the rest of them? He probably only cares about the reward.
Before she could make more assumptions, she saw the blonde walking up to her. She got up from the mossy tree she sat under to walk over to him.
He held a navy blue napkin in his hands that contained a sandwich cut into two halves and two cookies. Erykah’s mouth watered at the sight of it. “This for me?” She asked him eagerly, her stomach growling at the thought. Coriolanus nodded warmly in response to her hunger and gave the napkin to her. She took it from him with a grateful smile.
She turned her body to the left to see a mentor taunting her tribute with a bottle of pink liquid that Erykah couldn't recognize. “One thing I learned from living in the districts is that hunger is a weapon. Your friend over there seems to know that already.” She spoke to Coriolanus in a slightly disgruntled tone. “She's anything but a friend, trust me.” He reassured her.
His voice quieted slightly as he leaned in closer, though the bars prevented him from getting as close as he wanted to. “I might have a chance to help you from out here. I’ve made some suggestions to the game makers and their talking about having the audience send gifts, like food and water.” Maybe he does care about me, Erykah thought as he explained to her.
“You just need to get their attention. Maybe you could try singing like you told the interviewer yesterday?” He brought up the idea cautiously, not knowing if the idea sat well with her. She pondered for a second. “Do you have a guitar? I usually play that back in nine.” That was her only reason for hesitation. “I’m sure I can ask around.” He said with a reassuring nod.
Erykah nodded back at him before taking a bite of the sandwich. She hadn’t had a real sandwich since before her dad passed, that had been six years ago. “Thank you, Coriolanus.”
She thanked him as she swallowed her bite. She looked up at him as he stared at the food in her hands. His eyes moved up to hers as she caught him. “Just call me Corio.” He changed the subject, hoping you couldn’t tell. “Well Corio, you can have some if you want.” Erykah offered him some of the food as she tested the new nickname out. “No it’s for you.” He kindly insisted. “I saw you staring…” Coriolanus got nervous from her comment as he gave in and took the cookie from her hand.
“I always thought that there was plenty of food in the Capitol.” Erykah told him as she went to sit down. “Not in my case.” He responded with a nonchalant shrug.
She turned around to see one of the younger tributes resting her head on her district partner’s shoulder. The girl didn’t want to be here, then again who would? “That little one. She’s just so young, so sweet… She reminds me of my little sister, Magnolia. Can’t stand to think how she’s doing without me.” She told Coriolanus sadly. All he could muster up was, “I’m sorry,”
There was a moment of silence between the two before Erykah spoke up again. “You seem like a good man Corio. Wish I met you differently…” She told him with a sad smile. “Maybe you could’ve come to one of my shows. Had a drink, maybe a dance or two.” As she spoke, Coriolanus’ eyes didn’t leave hers. He was hanging onto every word she said. “Yeah… that would’ve been nice.” He agreed with the same sad smile she wore.
Their conversation ended abruptly as the tribute from earlier finally got the bottle from her mentor. She pulled the pig-tailed girl in closer, so her neck was poking through the bars. The redheaded tribute smashed the bottle on the bars of the enclosure and drove the bottle into the mentor’s throat.
Erykah watched as Coriolanus ran over to the mentor and grabbed her body, holding her in his arms as she choked out blood. He called out for help as he sat there helplessly. Erykah hid while peacekeepers shot at the tribute. She could hear the girl's body collapse as the peacekeepers stopped their shooting, now moving over to drag Coriolanus away from the mentor’s body.
Erykah sat up after the chaos. She saw that most of the other tributes in the cage didn’t want to leave their hiding places, fearing that there were peacekeepers waiting for a chance to shoot at them.
She was scared. If the tributes don’t have a problem killing their own mentors, then they’ll have no trouble killing me. Who could she trust? She didn’t have any allies. She supposed Panlo counted, but they had only talked a couple of times. Likewise, she would be alone in that arena. Let’s hope I don’t die alone.
Tumblr media
Erykah sat on a bench with her left hand chained down waiting for a short man, who she assumed was Coriolanus’ teacher, to finish talking.
“Dr Gaul wishes you all to preview the arena this afternoon with your tribute. Later this evening there will be a televised presentation of each tribute. You'll have an hour to discuss strategy.” The man walked off and took a small vial out of his pocket, gulping it down. Coriolanus sat down with a tense look on his face.
“I'm sorry about your classmate.” She uttered apologetically. “It's fine. Are you doing okay?” He attempted to change the subject. “The dress is my mom's, it's the only thing keeping me calm right now. Reminds me that I still have them waiting for me at home.” Erykah choked out. She sounded as if she were going to burst into tears any second.
“My mother used to smell like roses. She died in childbirth, I would’ve had a little sister.” Coriolanus smiled sadly at the memory of his mother. “I'm sorry Corio.” Erykah attempted to move her hand to hold his, the cuff attaching her to the table prevented her from doing so. He moved his to hers instead after seeing her try.
“What about you Erykah, how’s your family?” He changed the subject, gripping her hand slightly. Nobody around them, tributes nor mentors, seemed to notice the gesture. Erykah did. Her heart fluttered at the contact.
“Well… My dad passed away when I was twelve… so it’s just been me, my mom and my sister since then.” A look of grief as she told him. “I’ve been providing Maggy since then.”
“What about your mom?” Coriolanus asked her with a concerned look on his face. “She left us after it happened… she’s back now but I just… I can’t look at her the same.” She got a tighter grip on Coriolanus’ hand as she talked more about it. “I’m just worried that if I dont make it back she’s going to leave like last time. I can’t leave my sister Corio.” Her voice shook as tears threatened to spill out.
“Good thing you’re not going to. I'm going to get you out of that arena, Erykah. I don't care what I have to do. I'm going to get you back to your sister.” He looked into her sad eyes and rubbed his thumb over her hand in hopes it would make her feel better. Her lip quivered as she tried to give him a smile.
“Well I’ve heard there were some interviews that the tributes had to do. I’m going to sing.” She changed the subject, sniffling as she spoke. He nodded at her, “You’ll do great, I know it.”
“Snow, Dovecote.” His teacher interrupted their conversation. Coriolanus squeezed her hand one last time before getting up. Another mentor with long black hair, who Erykah assumed was “Dovecote”, followed after him.
Not long after their exit, the tributes were instructed to enter the same car that had brought them to the zoo; it would now take them to the arena. A majority of her time at the Capitol has been taken up by moving around. This is where she either died or beat the odds.
Tumblr media
Erykah stood in line waiting for entry to the arena. She fidgeted with her hands while she waited to go in. She heard footsteps across from her, Corio. He showed up by her side and gave a comforting nod as they began to walk in.
The red lights of the entryway did not help with the uneasy feeling she had. “Enjoy the show!” An upbeat voice sounded as they walked through the turnstiles.
In a nervous reflex, she slowly moved her hand into Coriolanus’. He tightened his hand around hers. They continued to walk slowly and let go of each other at the sight of cameras.
They walked around nervously as one of the mentors forced the camera on his tribute. “Hey, you! Get that camera on her!” Erykah scowled at him as you glanced around the arena. Where can I hide? It’s all open.
The sound of the doors closing startled her out of her anxiety. She looked up at Coriolanus who seemed to be just as confused as her. The loud windows of the arena started to open as the rest of the mentors and tributes were snapped out of conversation. Everyone looked up as the dark arena was brightened.
“I know you said you would get me back to my family, but I don’t know if I’m going to make it,” Erykah whispered to Coriolanus just before the arena exploded.

“What are we doing Friday night?”
“I have a date on Friday.”
The two of you spoke at the same time, and you stared wide eyed at him while he chuckled nervously, drumming his fingers against the countertop. You rocked back and forth on your heels before taking a step back and creating a pointed distance between each other.
“But we…we always hang out on Friday nights,” the mixture of annoyance and sadness made you sound so whiny. Fucking pathetic. You scratched the back of your neck awkwardly as he seemed to look anywhere but your face, “I just…assumed. We’d said we’d go see that new movie.”
“Well, I mean, we - all of us were going to go,” he shrugged, his nonchalant tone making this even worse, “you’ll still have Robin, Nancy, Munson, the kids.”
“Yeah,” your breath caught in your throat as you just tried to play it off. There was no reason that he needed to know about the odd mixture of feelings settling low in your stomach, “of course.”
“You understand, right?” his eyes finally met yours, as the two of you looked at each other for a few long moments. His gaze was piercing and you felt like he could see right through you, “it’s just that Allie asked me and I figured…why not, ya know? No reason not to.”
“Allie,” you repeated the name as your stomach churned and you felt like you could throw up. It wasn’t that you didn’t like Allie; she’d always been nice, kind, funny, pretty, all of it. She was a perfect little package. That was the worst part - you couldn’t even dislike her. Or blame him for saying yes. But the feeling it brought up was…strange, “wow. Yeah, no, totally. I-I’m sure that’ll be great.”
“You don’t like her?” he raised an eyebrow as you fervently shook your head, feeling your face flush with warmth, “what’s up with you-”
“I like Allie! She’s…great,” you insisted, your voice pitching up several octaves and making you sound like you were seconds away from crying. You were, “she’s, ugh, great.”
“Are you…okay?” he asked and you just nodded, giving him a tight lipped smile that felt as fake as it probably looked. He was going to see right through you. He was going to know…fuck. You were jealous. Plain and simple. You were jealous of Allie getting to go on a date with Steve, potentially kissing him, potentially fu- no. You were definitely not going to picture that, “babe-”
“You know, I’m late,” you lied as you pointed to your watch before stumbling your way to the door, “I’ve got umm…that thing. I’ll see you around Stevie.”
You ran out the door and over to your car without casting another look back towards Family Video. You were breathless, your chest in pain from a combination of the wild beating of your heart and that stupid, dumb feeling of heartache.
What had you expected? You’d never made a move, neither asked once asked him on a date date, never let him know you truly left. You couldn’t blame him for being in the dark about your feelings. Steve was allowed to go on dates, he was a free man. Hell, you’d already had feelings for him when he was dating Nancy and you hadn’t felt like this. Nancy was your friend, and while you had been jealous, you were happy, even if it meant your own heart breaking. If Steve was happy and Nancy was happy, that was all that mattered. But you’d been secretly overjoyed when they’d broken up. And yet still hadn’t made your move. It really shouldn’t have been a surprise that he was going on dates again.
“Fuck,” you groaned at yourself as you hit the steering wheel. The stinging pain spread throughout your hand immediately and only made everything worse. Warm tears had pearled up and run down your cheeks before you knew it, causing you to cry loudly, “fuck, fuck, fuck!”
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
“That was…something,” Robin stepped out of the back, a twizzler in her hanging from her mouth as she raised her eyebrows, “and by something I mean painful. That hurt me and I wasn’t even involved.”
“What are you talking about?” sure, it had been…something but Steve hadn’t quite put all the pieces together yet, “she must be feeling…off or something. She gets weird sometimes, I dunno.”
“Steve, you just broke her fucking heart,” she groaned as she shoved his shoulder, causing him to make a small sound of protest. He opened and closed his mouth like a fish out of water, unable to find the right words, “did you not…get that?”
“It’s just one Friday night,” he shrugged it off and turned to organize some of the rental returns. She grabbed his arm and shook her head. She really liked Steve, but damn, he was stupid sometimes, “there’ll be plenty of others…”
“You don’t get it, do you?” She was incredulous at how he didn’t realize that you were in love with him and the fact that he didn’t understand that he was in love with you too. She muttered something under breath that sounded a lot like complete idiots before throwing the last of her twizzler away, “Steve. She was jealous. Of your date. With Allie.”
“Oh,” he said as he nodded but then what she had said hit him all at once, “oh? Why would she be jealous? She’s my best friend.”
“You really don’t get it, do you? How can you be so blind?” she was laughing, both at how annoyed she was by both of you and how utterly sorry she felt that you both were foolish, “Steve. She’s jealous because she’s your best friend. Because she doesn’t want to be just your best friend.”
“Robin, just say what you’re getting at,” he ran a hand through his hair, mussing it even further than it already had been. How was she even friends with a fool like this?
“She’s in love with you,” she reached over and patted his cheek just as the door opened again and a new customer strolled in, “you’re such an idiot sometimes, Harrington.”
Robin left his side to greet the customer as he stood there, dumbfounded at her words. No. No. She had to be wrong. There was no way that you loved him. You loving Steve Harrington? The idea was almost laughable. You were the pretty, funny, smart girl and he was…your dumb but handsome other half. Oh. Oh. His other half. He’d always considered his other, and better half. You were the first thought on his mind in the morning, often at night, and so many other times of the day. You were the first person he turned to whether it was for something good or bad. Holy shit. You’d always been.
The revelation hit him like a ton of bricks as he paced around behind the counter. All those thoughts and feelings and everything…it had always been love. For you. Because he was in love with you. He thought back and realized he’d never once had the same intensity of feelings for Nancy. Even when he thought he was crushing on Robin, she hadn’t come close. Granted, he did love both of them, but he’d never loved someone like he loved you. Fuck. Steve Harrington was in love with you.
And Robin had said you were in love with him.
“No way,” he smacked himself on the forehead when he’d realized just how blind he was. To his own fucking feelings. And to yours. Maybe. If Robin turned out to be right. Which she sometimes was. But you…how could you love him? You were you and he was just…Steve, “fuck me.”
“Finally put it all together?” she called from across the store as he just waved her off, “took you long enough!”
If Robin was right, then he’d was sure he’d just royally screwed things up. He had to figure out how to fix it, if he could fix it…if you even wanted him to fix it.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
“Hey Eds,” you grinned as soon as you saw his mop of messy curls. You were waiting outside for the boys to finish their Hellfire session, sitting on the hood of your car as they ran out in excitement. You walked over and gave him a hug which he effortlessly reciprocated. You’d always liked him, falling into an easy friendship with him over the years. He was, surprisingly, one of the most reliable and present people in your life. Just like Steve. Fuck. Steve. You’d almost forgotten about him.
“Hey,” you liked his smile, it was all dimples and teeth and softness. It was a nice smile. You’d be lying if you said you didn’t find him attractive. If anything, he was much more your type than Steve was, “what’s up? You’re looking at me all funny.”
“Do you wanna go out with me?” you asked softly as his eyebrows raised up in surprise.
“We hang out all the time…”
“Like a date,” you blurted out before shrugging your shoulders and looking away in embarrassment, “like a date with me and you. A, umm…date date?”
“Oh…kay,” he was grinning now, watching you in amusement. Eddie, despite what people often seemed to think, was a smart man. Plus, he also wasn’t blind. He knew you were Steve’s in all but name and that you had him wrapped around your finger as well. He did find you attractive and everything and sure, he knew if you hadn’t been so gone for Harrington, he might have asked you out too, “why are you asking me on a date?”
“I dunno,” you flailed your hands lightly, “just a thought. God, I made this awkward didn’t I? I seem to be doing that a lot lately. Sorry, Eds.”
“You’re fine,” he had a smug little grin on his face. He reached up and put a finger gently under your chin before turning your face up to his, “listen. I totally want to say yes, but I, being a man of superior morals, can’t say yes.”
“Eddie-”
“You’re attractive, you’re smart, you’re nice. Probably too good for any of us,” he insisted softly, “but I know you don’t like me like that.”
“You’re hot-”
“I know,” he grinned cheekily, “you’ve told me that many times after a few drinks when you weren’t trying to make out with me. But you know…there’s the whole…Harrington thing.”
“There’s no…there’s nothing with him,” you sighed as you grabbed his wrist, trying not to cry, “I’m just his friend.”
“For now.”
“For always,” you took his hand and held it tightly in yours, “he’s going out with Allie on Friday. And knowing how perfect and wonderful she is - I want to hate her but I can’t - Steve will fall for her in seconds. Or someone else. Just not…me.”
“You’re so blind,” he laughed, his shoulders shaking as he tried to calm himself down. When you looked at him in confusion, clearly not following what he was getting at, he stopped, “wait. You really don’t…you don’t know Harrington’s in love with you?”
“I - what?” you looked at him with such wide, worried eyes that he immediately grew serious, “Steve’s not in love with me, Eds. Don’t joke about it when you know how I feel about him.”
“You think - you think I’m joking,” he scrubbed a tired, ringed hand over his face as he shook his, “everyone knows, but you apparently.”
“Eddie.”
“Listen,” he held up his hands to signal his innocence, “I’m just telling the truth. I would never lie to you. I-”
“Can we hurry this up?” Dustin shouted from the car as you both flipped him the bird, “there’s pizza at home!”
“You wanna grab dinner on Friday? We can ditch the kids after the movie and then talk,” he suggested as you nodded slightly. One of the kids honked the horn as you sighed heavily, “you better go before they lose it. See you Friday.”
“See you Friday,” you pressed a kiss to his cheek before turning around to the car, yelling at the trio in the backseat as you climbed into the driver’s seat.
Eddie waited there until you drove off, waving at the younger boys. He shook his head in amusement, laughing to himself, “oblivious idiots.”
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
Even though your hot date consisted of a bunch of young teenagers, along with a too cozy couple in Jonathan and Nancy, and the chaotic duo of Robin and Eddie, you’d decided to dress up. You’d been feeling off all week, well aware of the reason why, but couldn’t shake yourself out of it. Sure, you could theoretically just have called Steve, gone to his house, or work to talk. But you found yourself doing the exact opposite. You’d ignored his calls, and whenever he stopped by your house, you pretended you weren’t home. At one point he’d climbed up to your window and tapped on it, but it was late enough to pretend you were asleep. So you did just that, thankful that you’d had the forethought to lock it for once.
Was it pretty and childish? Absolutely. But you weren’t ready to face him and have your heart broken. Because you were positive that as soon as you told him  ‘hey, dumbass, I’m absolutely and irrevocably in love with you,’ he would laugh in your face and think you were joking. Your heart couldn’t handle that. Instead you broke your own heart by simply ignoring him.
So by dressing up, you figured that might lift your mood slightly. It did, and combined with spending time with your friends, you did feel a little better. Plus, the movie wasn’t as terrible as you’d thought it would be. All in all…okay.
Once you were all out of the theater, you nudged Eddie’s arm as you said your goodbyes to the rest of the group. He wrapped an arm around your shoulders without a second thought and started leading in the direction of the diner that you both loved. It was shitty, run down, and completely sketchy, but they had the best pancakes and milkshakes in Hawkins so it was worth the risk.
You were halfway there when you heard the shout of your name from across the street. You thought you’d imagined it until you heard Eddie’s name too. You stiffened as you both stopped and turned to look for the source of the voice. You already knew who it was long before you even saw him.
There stood Steve Harrington, hand in hand with Allie Miller, watching you with a scowl on his face. You heard Eddie giggle likely as you pinched his side and cast a small wave at Steve to placate him.
“Move,” you hissed at Eddie, nudging his hip with yours in a desperate attempt to get away from Steve. He took his sweet time, and of course, Steve and Allie had made it over to you within moments. Fuck. You were going to kill Munson for that later.
“Hey,” Steve’s eyes flicked between the two of you as you politely said hi to Allie, “what’s ugh…what’s going on here? Thought it was movie night?”
“The movie finished,” you shrugged and willed the ground to open and swallow you whole. You did not want to do this right now. Or ever. But life had a strange way of forcing its will upon you, “just grabbing dinner.”
“Just…the two of you?”
“Umm…yeah?” your whole was warm and you felt bad for Steve’s poor date. She had no clue what was going on, unlike the rest of you, “is there a problem, Steve? You’re the one that didn’t come out with all of us.”
“Are you on a date? Is that what this is? The two of you are going on a date together?”
“No-”
“Yes,” you insisted over Eddie’s soft no and you heard him sigh lightly. You knew he was trying to get you to tell Steve how you really felt. But you weren’t ready. You just…couldn’t, “yeah, we’re on a date so we’re just, umm…gonna go. Enjoy your evening.”
“Wait - you can’t just…”
“Is there a problem, Harrington?” Fuck, Eddie was mentally begging for the two of you just to get it over with. You were so close but both so damn stubborn. It was a quality that he loved in both of you normally, except right now.
“I…no,” he tried to keep his expression nonchalant, “not at all. The two of you want to date, that’s fine. Who am I to stop you?”
“Right, so we’re going now,” you tugged on Eddie’s hand and hurriedly pulled him away before anyone could say anything else. You sighed heavily as Eddie tutted at you, “don’t say a word, Munson.”
“It was the perfect opportunity,” he insisted, “he was practically staring me to death. He reeked of jealousy!”
“No,” you felt tears of both confusion and frustration well up in your eyes, “Eddie, can you please just drop it? Let’s just get dinner and forget this ever happened.”
“Y-yeah, sure,” he swallowed thickly and he suddenly felt horrible. All he wanted was his friends to get over whatever little game they had going and to finally confess their feelings. Fuck, he wasn’t into overly sentimental stuff, but even he was rooting for it to happen, “whatever you want, princess.”
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
“Robin? Are you ready to go?” you walked into Family Video without a second thought as you’d promised to pick her up after work so the two of you could get snacks and have a movie marathon. It was a cold, rainy day and nothing sounded better than getting under a pile of blankets and eating to your heart’s delight. When you didn’t hear anything, you rapped your fingers across the counter, “Robin?”
You heard someone coming from the back but to your shock it wasn’t Robin.
It was Steve.
You panicked immediately, your heart racing as you contemplated just running out. He wasn’t supposed to be here, Robin had said he wouldn’t be. He was supposed to have the day off. But there he was…right in front of you with an unreadable expression etched onto his handsome features.
“Hi,” he said softly as he held up his hand in a small wave. You hated this, this awkward and foreign feeling hanging between the two of you, “Robin’s not here. She was off earlier.”
What the actual fuck. No way. There was no way…she’d planned this. She’d totally schemed to get this happen. You had no doubt Eddie had been right there with her.
“O-oh,” you looked at the floor, “she, umm, she told me she was off now. We were supposed to have a movie marathon, but ugh…I’ll go.”
“How’s Munson?” you looked up and met his eyes and found out that he’d almost closed the distance between you, leaving just enough space to be appropriate. Was he…could Eddie have been right? Was he jealous?
“Eddie’s good,” you nodded, “umm, we’re all hanging out again on Friday. Game night at Nancy and Mike’s. I dunno if you were planning on coming by or whatever now that you’ve got…what’s her name.”
“Allie,” he replied, although you were both well aware that you knew her name.
“Right,” you cleared your throat before moving towards the door, “I, umm…see you around. Maybe.”
You were out of the door and in the middle of the rain before he could say another word. The universe was definitely conspiring against you as the downpour increased on your trek across the parking lot. You’d go home and change and then kill Robin and Eddie. You hoped the two of them had enough sense to at least pretend to be sorry for this mess.
“Wait!” you heard Steve’s voice before you turned around and found him running towards you, “it’s raining too hard! You shouldn’t be driving right now.”
“I’ll be fine!” the two of you almost had to shout at each other over the sound of the pouring rain. Both of you were already drenched at this point, “go back inside, Stevie! You’re already soaking wet.”
“I’m not going out again with Allie!” When did he get so close? He was standing in front of you, only a small gap between your bodies as you found your heart beating rapidly, “are you going out again with Munson?”
“Steve,” he reached up and brushed a few wet, stray locks of hair gently out of your face. His fingertips ghosted against your jaw, “I wasn’t on a date with Eddie. I’m not dating him. We’re just friends.”
“Then why did you say you were on a date?” his face fell slightly as you just shook your head, already feeling the tears stinging at the back of your eyes.
“Why aren’t you seeing Allie again?”
“You know why!” a crack of thunder roared in the distance as you almost jumped into his arms, “you’ve always known why!”
“Stevie-”
“You’re the only person that’s ever been allowed to call me that,” he insisted, the corners of his mouth ticking up ever so slightly, “I hate when anyone else calls me that. I’ve always hated that nickname.”
“Why do you let me do it?”
“You know why,” he repeated as he leaned in closer and you found yourself doing the same. Even in the pouring rain you could smell his delicious cologne clinging to him, mixing in with the sweet scent of skin. It was intoxicating and all consuming, just like everything about Steve Harrington.
“Tell me,” you insisted softly, “please, I need to hear you say it. Why aren’t you seeing her again?”
“Because she’s not you,” his hands found the sides of your face as he gently cradled it in his large, warm hands, “why aren’t you dating Munson?”
“Because he’s not you,” you wrapped your fingers around his wrists and let out a shaky breath. When you allowed yourself to meet his eyes, you found him watching you with the same soft, dopey expression he always had for you. Oh. It was because…oh. He never looked at anyone else like that because -
“I’m in love with you,” his words rang out loud and clear against the pounding of the rain and crackles of thunder in the distance. Your mouth opened lightly in surprise and shock at actually hearing him say those words. You’d pictured this moment at least a thousand times in your head, but none of these scenarios were ever like this, “I-I feel like an idiot because I just realized that. I’ve always known, you but it never fully clicked until-”
“Robin and Eddie,” you finished for him as he nodded in agreement, “I don’t know whether I’m happy or mad at them right now!”
“Can I kiss you?” you knew the moment was coming but his softly spoken question still managed to make your heart beat wildly as you just looked at him with big doe eyes. You leaned in and closed the little bit of remaining distance, crashing your lips onto his. Steve was taken aback for just a moment, but quickly realized what was going on and kissed you back, pouring every single unspoken word into the kiss, trying to get you to understand just how he felt.
You both pulled back when you were breathless, grinning at each other like fools. He pressed his forehead against yours as a wistful little sigh escaped from your lips. Holy shit. You’d just kissed Steve Harrington. Your best friend, your biggest supporter, your…everything. He’d kissed you back. He wanted to kiss you. He was in love with you.
“I don’t think I’ll ever be able to top this moment,” he laughed, that easy sound reaching your ears. It had been too long since you’d heard that sound.
“What? You mean running after me and kissing me in the rain?” you teased as he touched your face and gently brushed his thumb over your cheek, “that’s pretty romantic, Harrington. You could always try though!”
“For you?” he leaned and pecked your lips a few more times, trying to memorize the touch and taste of your lips, “I’ll always try.”
A few flashes of lightning illuminated the sky, quickly followed by rumbling thunder, causing you to cling tightly onto him.
“Let’s get inside!” he insisted as laced his fingers through yours. You marveled at how perfectly your hands fit together, “you’re gonna get wet.”
“I think it’s a little late for that Stevie,” you grinned, “hey.”
“What?”
“I love you, Steve Harrington,” his face practically lit up at your words and that alone made everything worth it, “even if you are an idiot sometimes. You’re my idiot!”
“I love you,” he promised, “you’re my girl.”

Chibs Telford x F!Teller!Reader

Warnings: Angsty. Mentions of death, murder, emotional distress, emotionally heavy.

A/N: I've been thinking about these two a lot </3 Part 1
Tumblr media
Your chest was rising and falling as you caught your breath and stared at the ceiling. It was the moment where all your wits and sanity came back over you and the thoughts of what just happened came flooding in. The smell of his Scottish cologne and cigarettes filled the empty space on the bed next to you, it was still warm to the touch. You heard the water from the faucet turn off and any thought that was sneaking in your brain was now being rushed out as Chibs reappeared in your room. His hands were tangling through his shirt as he put it back on. Your eyes darted from him to his kutte, waiting to see if he was going to put it on. That’s when your heart began to race even more. The thought of him leaving made you uneasy, he had come all the way up here to the farm to see you and explained nothing. It was partially your fault too, you made pleasantries, some quick small talk but before any explanation was given you were kissing him and dragging him into your room.
“What’s with the face, love?” Chibs spoke as he grabbed his kutte, your heart sinking with it.
“Leaving already?” Your eyes moved back to his.
A smile grew on his face as he shrugged the leather over his shoulders. “You promised me uh tour, didn’ya? If I ‘member correctly you said sum ‘bout chickens?”
The way the relief washed over you made you sad for a minute. You knew this was a feeling you’d feel again, that it’d be heavy when it happened, but you took a deep breath and tried to stay in the moment.
“Earl, Tootsie, Olive, and Jameson.” You named them off as you stood up and re-dressed.
Chibs was now grinning as he waited for you to get ready. “Jameson, huh?” He asked pulling out a cigarette to hang in his mouth, eager to get outside and smoke it.
“Abel and Thomas named them when they were young kids, but I made sure I suggested one.”
Chibs was holding out your sweatshirt for you. You approached and grabbed it from him but instead of letting go he pulled you closer. “Not tha only thing you have ‘round here as a reminder of me.” His face was dangerously close to yours as he looked down at the sweatshirt. It was the one item of his you could still wear around. There were no SAMCRO tags, just a black zip-up that barely had his scent left on it.
“I’ve got pictures too.” You said stealing the zip-up back from him and placing a kiss on the left side of his mouth where the cigarette wasn’t dangling from his lips. Moving past him you made your way to the backdoor, the barn dog you got quickly getting up from her bed and moving to the sliding door just waiting to run around to herd the few goats you had.
“Where’re the boys?” Chibs asked as he walked behind you.
“Thomas is with Nero. Tuesdays he picks him up from school and takes him to basketball practice.” You spoke as the door slid open and the door ran past your legs. “Abel is 16— I’m lucky if I know what he’s wearing for the day. I thought Gemma was being exaggerated when she’d talk about the “Teller Terrible Teens” but Abel has made her words an understatement.”
Chibs looked to you with a frown as you stepped onto the back deck and made your way down to the farmland.
“It’s not horrible. He’s not a dick to me, he helps out when I ask. He just– he questions everything, he’s asking about Jax, he’s getting into trouble at school.” You shook your head thinking about these last few weeks and how Abel had been acting out.
“The worst part is, he reminds me of him so much. The way he looks, the way he talks.” You laughed as you unlatched the barn fence and moved around it to look at Chibs and invite him in with the sway of your arm.  “Yesterday, we were at the grocery store and he looked at the girl bagging our shit and said, “thanks, darlin’” I swore I was looking at Jax, I froze for a minute and just stared at him.” You laughed again.
Chibs laughed with you knowing it sounded just like the boy’s father.
“He’s probably out with his friends on his dirt bikes in the back trails.” You spoke as you walked through the goat pasture. “They probably do real stupid shit but I’d rather them do it on the property than at some random’s house or parking lot downtown. I’ve turned them into real country boys.” You turned back to see Chibs admiring everything around him. He was still listening to you but he was taking in the sight around him.
“This is the goat pasture, Billie girl, our dog, loves herding them, honestly I got ‘em because I don’t have to mow the lawn as much. We’ve got 1 horse, Delilah, real beauty, she’s back in that red barn over there. Then there’s the chickens. We had more but they aged out, now we’re down to the four. Waiting to get 12 more, can’t go to the Farmer’s market with only 2 dozen eggs, you know?” The words were falling out fast as you spoke, nervous habit, but it didn’t stop you from beaming as you showed Chibs around.
“You seem happy.” Chibs couldn’t help but smile as he took in every word you said. The both of you approached the back deck and plopped down on the rocking chairs Nero insisted you kept back here for company. It was an argument between you two when you first moved onto the farm. You looked at him like he was crazy when he mentioned company. It was hard to believe a normal life with having people over could exist when you were running from what you were running from.
You looked over at Chibs as he looked right back at you after making his last comment, the smile on your face wasn’t at his words but at the memory of Nero’s.
“I don’t know about happy.” You began to shake your head. “But, I don’t know I’m content, I’m…” Your mind wandered to find the right word.
“At peace.” Chibs nodded as he finished your sentence, not even bothering to look at your eyes to see if his words were correct, he knew they were.
You would have agreed with a nod but Chibs was looking out at the farm, his fave had fallen into an expression that was hard to read. He seemed…bittersweet. Happy but yet sad.
As he stared out at the barn he nodded his head and said something under his breath.
“The Universe will never give you peace in something you were never meant to settle in.”
“What?” You leaned forward, frown filling your face as the familiar sentiment fell from his lips. It was hard to really pinpoint anything since he spoke it at a mumble.
“I, uh.” Chibs reached into his back pocket and pulled out a small pocket notebook. “found this. In the garage. S’why I came out here, figured you should have it.” He handed over one of Jax’s notebooks. You knew what it was immediately, it matched the style of the other one you had.
“I read it.” Chibs said those three words with multiple emotions behind it. Regret and apologies, for intruding on whatever privacy there was there, but also firmness and understanding like something in there just made sense.
“And?” You rested your elbows on your knees.
“‘nd, it’s’y I came here and didn’t mail it out.” He looked troubled now. “I wanted to make sure you were settled.”
Now that statement held more weight knowing what he had just mumbled under his breath.
“I guess I am.” You hated that the words felt like they were breaking his heart.
“You are, love.” Chibs spoke with certainty.
You looked out onto the farm, taking in the life you had. It was different than the life you had been born into, forced into. The life that took pretty much everything away from you.
“It’s impossible to be at peace in that town.” You said the words outloud. It felt relieving to say it. All this time you had never said it outloud, they were just thoughts that danced around you head.
“Don’t I know it.” Chibs agreed with you.
That made your head turn to him, a little shocked. All your conversations when you were together, or involved was probably the better word, back in Charming never were really about the big problem. Sure, you two talked about club stuff, the things members told their ol’ ladies, about your brother, about Jimmy O, about a lot, but never the real source.
“What are you saying?” You questioned him, more bold than you ever would have before.
“Things are different. Things are messy.” He wanted to share but you could tell he was hesitant, that he was trying to ease back into your dynamic and add another layer to it. But the loyalty to the club ran deep, that was a multi-decade long habit that he was trying to break for the first time.
“Doesn’t sound different.” That was the new you coming up to speak. The you that lost your brother, your brother’s best friend, your mother, your father to the club.
Chibs nodded at that. “We’re getting into it with the Mayans. Other charters, they’re falling apart, it’s bleeding into SAMCRO.”
“Yea, doesn’t sound different at all.” You crossed your arms and fell back into the rocking chair.
“Your brother–Jax–Jackie boy,” Chibs went through all the names he’d call Jackson Teller, smiling at the last one before letting his lips fall, “this wasn’t what he wanted, he worked hard to leave everything in a good place and it’s like shit unraveled.”
You could tell he was venting to you, you could tell he hadn’t been able to do this with anyone else in his life, no one from the club, no one in his love life, it could’ve made you feel special, a characteristic Chibs never failed at with you, but this wasn’t so much of a fail but just not something you could ever feel special about again.
“As someone who's seen it before, from the outside but up close and personal. This doesn’t seem different at all.”
It was the same statement you kept repeating, but this time, the way you said this, it made him look at you. His eyes were low, tired, and you could see the gloss and redness in them as he held back tears. Two strands of his long salt and pepper hair escaped from his sunglasses and fell in front of his eyes, oily and dirty you could tell he was going through it.
He didn’t need to say anything, you knew he was looking at you to elaborate.
It was mean to laugh, but you felt that you had the right to after everything you’ve been through and talking about it now was bringing that bitterness up.
“You’re so deep in it, you don’t even see what’s plain in front of your eyes.” You closed your eyes and took a deep breath letting the irritation leave your tone for the next sentence out of your mouth. “Your next. Everyone who's held that gavel ends up in the same place, making the same mistakes as the one previous, no matter how hard they try not to.”
Chibs took in what you said.
“Jax tried so hard to be JT, then tried so hard not to be him. Both of those things dug that grave for him. He loved the club more than anything and the club couldn’t love him back.” You were saying things that you had locked away in your mind for years, things you thought about as you buried your brother, as you packed your life up and left. “The club will never love you back.” You looked at Chibs. “Those guys might love you, but the club never will.”
“Do you?”
You weren’t sure if he was trying to change the subject, at first your head snapped to him with a smirk and a snappy remark to shoot back at him but you saw his face that was looking out at the farm.
“Never stopped.”
The words made him look at you and you smiled at him. Your head tilted and lowered to meet him at eye level since he was leaning his elbows on his knees. “Best part is, the farm,” you tilted your head a little more before leveling it out, “it loves you back.” You nodded. “Every animal, every acre of land, the boys even when they fucking hate you for embarrasing them in front of a girl,” you laughed at that one and smiled hoping the last one was going to be enough to convince him, “me.”
The tear dropped at that one. His eyes shut tight as a couple more fell.
“Move here. You can open up a garage, we have the buildings for it, Nero would even let you put something up closer to the road, you can come with me to the Farmer’s market, you can drive me to the vet at 2 in the morning when I’m worried that Billie got into something or that one of the chicken’s has a fever,” you chuckled, “you can ride dirt bikes with the boys and tell them about Jax, not SAMCRO president, but your best friend, how you fell in love with your best friend’s sister, you can wake up and feel settled, feel at peace.”
Chibs wanted to say yes. He wanted to build a fire and burn the kutte right here right now, but he knew it wasn’t that easy. In this moment it was but as the thought settled, as the days would pass, he’d think about it, he’d dwell in it, wonder if he made the right decision, miss the kutte, miss the guys.
“It’s not that easy, love.” Chibs tired to level with you.
“Doesn’t seem like the life you’re living now is either.” You would beg him, it wasn’t below you to beg. “It’s going to kill you.” You were firm in your words, it wasn’t begging but you thought it might have an impact on him. “The club is going to kill you.”
“A normal life would too.” He answered too quickly and immediately you knew it was a losing argument.
The sound of an engine and the gravel dirt being stirred up and you knew it was Thomas and Nero coming back home. Chibs looked over and saw them pulling into the driveway when he stood up.
“Was really good seeing you, love.” He put his hand on your cheek and looked down at you. “Really good.” His thumb caressed your cheek and he smiled.
You nodded in agreement and thanked him for the journal. His hand was still on your cheek when you shut your eyes tight. “Don’t come back here unless the ink is blacked out and the kutte is off.”
The words broke you to say, but it was more than just you that you had to look out for. You had two boys to think of and the man who was generous enough to give you half of his acreage to live on.
“Ay.” He agreed with no disdain in his voice, if anything it was littered with understanding and what you hoped was well, hope.
Your eyelids remained shut as his hand dropped and he walked off the back porch. You heard the car doors close but no words exchanged. If you weren’t dealing with everything that just happened in your head right now you’d be imagining the way Nero was probably lifting his sunglasses while Chibs was lowering his, the nods both would give to eachother, the curious questioning look on Thomas’ face as he tried to place the visitor.
“You alright?” Nero’s voice was filling your ears and you wished it offered up the level of comfort it normally did.
The tears were wiped from your face immediately and you stood and smiled. “Yea, I’m good.”
Nero knew you weren’t but he also knew you weren’t going to share with Thomas two steps from joining you on the porch.
“Who was that?” Thomas was asking as he looked down at the snack he was fidgeting with to open.
Your gaze looked at Nero and said so much while not speaking at all. Before you either had a chance to answer, another voice was coming from the other direction as the back door swung open. “Was that guy on the bike here at the farm?” Abel’s voice was like a knife to your heart.
“Yea, it was someone looking to sell me something.” You lied straight through your teeth to both boys.
“Oh.” Thomas said as he passed by both you and Nero without second guessing your statement and walked right past his older brother into the house.
Abel looked like he might need more convincing but you could tell he decided to drop it. “I’m goin’ out later but I picked up the feed order and left it in the ATV wagon.”
“12AM curfew.” You pointed at him and he waved you off but you knew he’d be back before 1.
“What was he sellin’?” Nero asked you, the only one besides you who knew exactly who it was that was here.
You looked at Nero and shook your head at him.
“A dream.”

Part 1 🖲️
Part 2 - enjoy :)

„I haven‘t seen you in forever – where the hell have you been Y/N?“
You took a sip of your mocha latte and thought of an answer. Your best friend looked at you worriedly, her green eyes full of concern. If it wasn’t her, you’d come up with a lie: work was killing you, you studied a lot, you visited your family or simply decided to take a social detox.
But since it was your best friend asking you decided to tell the truth. “I spent most of my time sleeping”, a smirk escaped your coral lips.
“Sleeping? Why are you sleeping so much? Oh my god, are you sick?” She took your hands into hers and scooched closer. Your best friend smelled like roses and nicotine – a scent that you grew up with. If it wasn’t her, you’d lie but why bother? Surely, she’d understand, no matter how ridiculous it sounded.
You took a deep breath before answering: “No, I am not sick. I’ve been sleeping a lot because”, you gathered your confidence to tell her the truth, “because that’s the only way I can still see him.” You looked at you lap silently.
Your friend’s bewildered eyes observed you cautiously. “See him? Him? Him as in Hyunjin?” You nodded your head, still facing your lap. “What do you mean you see him? Does he appear in your dreams?”
You smiled, thinking back of the first time it happened. It was a cold winter night in Seoul, the air was crisp and the heater in your apartment barely worked. You put on everything you had in your closet before you wrapped yourself in a thick, wool blanket. After Hyunjin broke things off you became a homebody, not really wanting to engage in life anymore.
Instead, you spent countless nights in front of your window looking at the moon, wondering if he was doing the same. You understood why he had to end it between you two but that didn’t soothe your pain, at all. You often fell asleep thinking about him, wishing it were his arms around you and his love illuminating the night instead of the moon.
One night it just happened. It was as he was sitting right next to you, holding you, talking to you. You saw his features so clearly – his black hair framed his beautiful face, his eyes turned into crescent moons when smiling and his plush lips turned into a smirk when he caught you gazing at him.
Ever since that night you tried to sleep as much as you could, just to be close to him. You knew it was a dream, but it felt so real, you felt as if he was right here with you and that was all you needed in that moment.
“So? What does he say in your dreams?”
You blushed. “Oh, sometimes he just says things, like, how much he misses me and stuff.”
When it happened the first time, he took the blanket off of you and embraced you in his strong arms. He smirked, looking at you dressed like the Michelin male. “Are there actually any clothes left in your closet?” You slapped his chest, pouting. “Okay, okay, I am sorry”, he laughed. “You better be. After all, it’s your fault you’re not here to keep me warm anymore.”
Even in your dreams you felt the sadness in both of your chests. “You are right, Y/N. And I’m so sorry. I miss you like crazy; you have to believe me. I started seeing your name everywhere, the guys are already fearing I’ve become mental.” He tightened his grip around you. “I know this sounds selfish, but I’m happy you haven’t moved on, yet.”
You looked at his face – his lips smiling happily but his sorrowful eyes giving him away. Before you could say anything, he placed his index finger on your lips, silencing you. “No please, let me go first. I know that this is my fault. I should have never dated you in the first place, Y/N. I never wanted to hurt you like that. I never wanted us to part like this. I am sorry but I-”
Beep. Beep. Beep.
Your eyes shot open, your whole body tense. It took you a couple of minutes to understand what had happened, to process all of this. And then you remembered – Hyunjin being there with you. You felt the loving warmth in your body, your chest expanding and smiling. You thought of him being with you, holding you, apologizing to you, still loving you.
And then it hit you – the sadness rolled over you like a vast tsunami. It was a dream, nothing but a stupid dream.
You started to cry, clenching the blanket wishing it was him. The pain was unbearable – why couldn’t he stay with you?
Weeks went by until you had the next dream – ironically, it was the night of your cousin’s wedding. It took all your determination to power-through that day, to be happy for her while you felt in shambles. And when you fell asleep that night, he visited you again. Hyunjin was dressed in a tuxedo, as if he had been wanting to accompany you to that wedding.
“I can’t wait until it’s our turn, love!”
He smiled at you brightly. You giggled while lacing your fingers together. “Yeah, you’re going to be a fantastic bride, Hwang.” Hyunjn faked a shocked expression, loving every minute of it though. “Listen, I mean it. Don’t you ever think about our future together?”
“No way, that’s too creepy!” Your friend interrupted you. You smirked once more: “Ya think?” She moved closer, basically sitting on your lap now. “I mean, I don’t get it. Didn’t you know that you were broken up in your dreams?” You sighed, heavily. “I guess, kind of? But do you know when you’re dreaming, like flying, you don’t even notice you’re dreaming, because it feels real? And when I saw Jinnie in my dreams, I don’t know it felt as if we’re together. As we should be.”
You paused with a heavy heart. “As we were.”
Your friend squeezed your hand. You tried to smile once more asking her if she wanted to hear the rest. “Sure, but let me order some real drinks first. I feel like I’m gonna need those.”
She came back with a tray full of tequila. “Bottoms up. We need these, trust me.” The alcohol burned your throat, but you kind of liked it. You gathered your thoughts: “So, where was I?”
“I mean, I think of our future all the fucking time. Like, when this whole idol thing is over, I want to get married. To you Y/N!” He practically beamed at you with love. You believed that he loved you but marriage? As if he could read your thoughts, he started to explain himself. Hyunjin took your hands into his and drew small circles on them while declaring his love for you.
“Y/N, you know how little girls dream about their wedding? Well, I guess I did the same, just as the little boy-version, I guess. I always fantasized about being married to the woman of my dreams. I even built a small vision board, silly right?”
Your eyes widened in surprise. “What was on that board?” He was glowing, eyes turning into half moons again.
“Well, I put a lot of things on it, actually. I wanted her to be beautiful and cute, of course. I wanted to parade her through town and show off, because my girl was the prettiest in the whole wide world. I also wanted her to be charming and funny – even as a small boy I knew that life could get hard, and you needed some giggles. Furthermore, I wanted her to be smart and expressive. That makes totally sense, right? Like I love to draw, and I want her to have a passion of her own. I also wanted her to be compassionate and kind. I guess I wanted to date my best friend.”
You were in awe of him – even at such a young age he knew exactly what he wanted. “And as for the relationship, or marriage I should say, I wanted us to feel happy and loved. I wanted it to be fun yet peaceful. The feeling you get when you come home.” He squeezed your hands tightly. “That is the feeling I have when I’m with you. You exceeded my every expectation Y/N and that’s why I want to marry you.”
Your friend started heavily sobbing, the tequila probably adding to that. “You alright?”, you asked worried. “Am I alright? What do you mean am I alright? Are you alright? I can't believe this!” Her cries and screams got the attention of the other guests, so you tried to calm her down quickly.
“Y/N, this breaks my heart. You two belong together. Hyunjin can't even let you go in your fucking dreams! Are all of your dreams emotional like that?”
In fact, they were not. Sometimes, when you got really lucky, you dreamed of him being intimate with you. You shuddered just remembering this, but he always had that effect on you. Hyunjin loved to tower over you, taking advantage of his height. He grabbed you by the chin, tenderly, while looking into your eyes with the most intense gaze.
“Baby girl”, his lips touching yours slightly, “do you know what I’d love to do to you, right now?” His hands roamed your body, squeezing all of his favorite parts before breathing into your ear seductively: “I want to pin you down on this mattress and make love to you all night long. I’m gonna make you cum over and over until you can’t scream my name anymore. And when we’re done, I’m gonna hold you in my arms and praise you. I’ll tell you what a good girl you were for me while kissing your bruises. Will you let me do that to you, baby girl?”
You poured that shot of tequila in one go. Your friend was right – you needed it. Bullshit, what you needed was Jinnie. Ever since you started dreaming of him that nagging voice in the back of your mind got louder.
“Do you think he’s dreaming of you, too? Or maybe he’s using some kind of dark magic to communicate with you?”
You laughed whole-heartedly, the first time in weeks. “Magic? What are you, nuts?” Your friend scoffed at you. “Listen you punk, haven’t you seen Harry Potter? Remember when Voldemort was writing to Harry in that ugly notebook? What if it’s something like that? What if Hyunjin got himself a notebook, probably one with flowers on it because he’s a sissy like that and writes to you from time to time. And when he does, he appears in your dreams!”
You got up from your seat and grabbed your coats: “I think we’ve had enough tequila and I think we need to go home. And sleep!” Both of you left the bar and got greeted with the chilly air of springtime Seoul.
“Y/N, I fucking mean it. What if-”  she looked up at the full moon, “-what if Hyunjin was talking to the moon right now? Hey moon, it’s your boy, Hyunjin from Stray Kids, and I need to tell you something!” You crackled up at your friend imitating Jinnie.
“Listen, moon, I see you are shining especially bright today, and I wish I could say the same about me. But I can’t. Because I made a big fucking mistake some months ago. I let go of the LomL, oh right, the moon doesn’t know that term, it’s love of my life, sorry moon, anyway and now I am miserable. I might turn ugly from sadness, is that possible? I miss her so fucking much. Do you miss her, too? You probably don’t because you still get to see her every night.”
Thankfully, you were so drunk that you forgot how painful all this felt for a short moment. You looked up at the moon and felt peaceful for once. “Hey moon”, you whispered, “you can tell him that I miss him, too. Send him my love, alright?”
You felt your friend lay her arm around your shoulder. “Let’s go home and sleep, shall we?”

I sighed and leaned back onto the chair provided as the family argued in front of me, Nightwing seemed very untrusting of me which was sad but to be expected, Jason however was valiantly defending my honour saying that it calmed down the pit rage. I really need to look into these pits, both because they’re clearly ectoplasm of some sort and also yum.
I watched them argue back and forth but when Jason didn’t try to kill any of them or storm away (poor guy really needs to get his system cleaned) they seemed to accept that what I had done had worked, they also did a few blood tests and with some assurance that I knew how to take non dangerous levels of blood they left it alone.
Jason turned around to talk to me but I was already in mist form to watch his reaction, he gave a smal sigh and muttered something about asking him to do that more often, ooh, good. I flew through the layers of stone and walked to Arkham Asylum to see Jazz, she’d moved there as a psychologist and apparently had the longest streak of staying alive or sane as one, weird.
A guy with a face full of clown makeup skipped happily down the street and everyone turned their gazes away and not say anything, Gotham truely does reminds me of home but with more crime and more normal stuff, like nice normal clowns instead of freakshow or ghost clowns.
I walked into the asylum “Hi! I’m here to see Jazz!” I said, he glanced at me and then my teeth and claws
“Poor Jasmine, if you kidnap her can you set it up to look like Joker? I’ve got money riding on him.” the guy asked, I gave him a look and went to where Jazz was, waiting until some guy with an impressive nose walked out of the room
“Danny!” she cried as the ran over and hugged me
“Jazz!” I said back “Have you heard about the Bats?” I asked
“I’m Jokers therapist, I know about them.” Jazz said and I laughed
“Okay so here’s the story
I walked down the street sipping my ecto, it’s blood red was kind of disorientating but whatever, better than having to pay for food. Suddenly two guys jumped me! I sighed and kept drinking, I punched the first guy into a wall a bit harder than I intended to but he’d be fine, the second guy I knocked out easily, and the third guy tripped me but I caught myself by flying and tripped him up then gave him a purposely harder punch which winded him, no need to knock my lunch out of my hands.
I turned around to pick up my thermos and saw Batman, BATMAM. Look, maybe hissing then turning into mist and flying at him to get it might not have been the smartest choice, but I don’t have fully human instincts anymore so there was no fear stopping me and no one in the world needs any more sources of ecto, and I had spent hours tinkering around with that so it filtered ecto from the atmosphere just right no way was I doing that again!
Anyways, he thought I was a vampire so I decided, giw are after me so I decided to be a vampire, I got jumped about a week later. I’m living in the Bat cave.” I said
“Are they treating you right?” Jazz asked, I nodded “I have a story too. I’m liminal, we all know this, anyways, I saw this lady whos on greyscale and could be from the victorian era. So I met Lady Gotham!” Jazz said “She’s cool.”
“Oh awesome, I left some gifts for her when I moved in. She said I could live here but I only met her that once.” I admitted
“Good.” Jazz said with a nod “Listen to what Frostbite and Clockwork teach you about Ghost etiquette.”
“There’s this guy who has really good tasting ectoplasm too, it’s fermented and in his blood.” I mentioned, Jazz blinked
“Huh. What do you think of him?” she asked
“He’s strong, keeps mentioning ‘pit rage’ I think these pits are old ectoplasm, good ectoplasm, it’s delicious.” I said
“Is this guy Red Hood? Lady Gotham mentioned him, he died and got revived by a pit of ectoplasm, but he didn’t come back as a ghost, just the same human as before, so the ectoplasm is keeping him alive but he’s probably makes way too much for a human to filter.” Jazz suggested “He was probably frustrated about something, and then it amplified that frustration which led to more frustration and anger which got amplified, creating a positive feed back loop. He probably has no control over the anger now though.” Jazz said, I knew enough about coding from listening to Tucker to know what a positive feedback loop was.
“Huh, poor guy.” I said, Jazz nodded solemnly when there was a knock on the door and the gruff voice of someone who’s seen some stuff
“Your next patient Ms Fenton.” he said
“Bye Jazz!” I said and I walked out.

An Altercation with Death Part 2
He was late. Incredibly late.
You were not surprised though: your hopes and expectations of seeing him were dwindling. Finishing work for the rest of the afternoon was a struggle when you just had him on your mind, but also on what you had just done.
Was I being too forward? Was he just being polite?
You finished up work in the early evening, walking away from the vibrant town, up the cobbled slopes towards your secluded home. It was quaint, yet sometimes lonely.
You sighed in the cooling air, hugging yourself with your cardigan as the only source of warmth. “Of course, I overstepped, like always.”
“Buenas noches, corderito.”
You looked up, eyes darting over to the dead, wilting tree, a shadow emerging from its rotting bark, tall and imposing, the wolf appeared with red eyes gleaming.
“Lobo,” You breathed a sigh of relief, certain your heartbeat could be heard, erratically beating. “I didn’t know you were there.”
“Apologies for startling you,” he lowered his hood, his pointed ears spoking upwards, grey smoke fur standing out in the contrast of the moonlight. “I have been quite busy.”
“I can tell.” You murmured, and the realisation hit you like a ton of bricks; the height difference! You barely came up to his hip, and he stood imposing and towering.
It had come to you to realise you had been caught staring at him, noticing the way he stalked closer and closer towards you, gauging how you would react or even at all when you were caught in a daydream once again. Dios mío, think, Y/N! Think!
You coughed awkwardly, trying to find the right words and to not feel so uneasy. “So, what do you want to do?”
There was amusement and intrigue mixed in his crimson gaze. “What do you mean?”
“Well, we’re both free all evening… would you like to go and do something?”
“How about going for a meal?”
Your expression lit up, it was an indication to him that this was a great idea. “Of course! Ooh, I’ve heard of this really good tapas and patatas bravas.”
Something in his eyes lit up too; was it fascination, interest? It was uncertain. The wolf, close enough, knelt to be eye level with you, his long snout gracing your ear as he whispered lowly. “Wherever you, go, I’ll follow, chica.”
You could’ve mistaken your face had betray you: the way he whispered so huskily in your ear, the warmth of his face so close to yours, the pure power that was raw and radiating off of him. He could’ve easily pinned you down to the ground and ravaged you whole, and something about that both ignited the flight or fight mode within you.
“Okay!” You side-stepped closely away from him before he could sense your bashfulness. It was amusing for Lobo, watching you stumble away from him as he sauntered behind you.
He followed not far behind you as you led the way, back down towards town as life filled the streets in the late evening. All walks of life were situated everywhere: music filled the streets, food and smells of all flavours filled your nostrils. It gave you the best idea for everything: how would Muerte think if you got him a sweet treat?
You found the small restaurant, surprised when the waiter asked if it had been a table for one, when you looked back over behind you. “Oh no, it’s me and—” You were expecting the wolf’s looming figure to stand behind you, instead, met with the open, cooling air. “Ah, I’m waiting for someone.”
“Of course, señorita.”
The waiter directed you to a small table in the corner, forgotten and left for all to ignore, as the waiter ran off to grab two menus, you felt a warm, familiar hand press into your waist, something fuzzy and soft brush up against your side. “This is a nice table.”
“Lobo! Where did you run off to?” You scolded lightly, the two of you sitting as the waiter returned, taking your orders. It was odd: how the waiter didn’t even regsiter Muerte sitting there opposite you. Where you losing your mind? How could anyone not spot him there?
“I swear I seem strange to others.”
Muerte was sipping his drink when he met your gaze, “How so?”
“Well, that waiter looked at me like I was having a meal with an imaginary friend.” You couldn’t help but laugh to yourself. “I mean, it’s not hard to notice you. I thought it would’ve been the opposite way round.”
“Well, it’s hard not to miss a corderito like you.” He said, but there was a indiference to his words. It was as if he was never bothered by being unnoticed. How could someone like him want to be ignored? You thought, observing him.
“Do you come out often?”
“Many times, actually,” he chewed at his meal. “Though never once have I been invited on a date before.” He grinned when he said that one word, and your heart nearly collasped in your chest.
“Date—where did you-”
“You said to that cabra idiota yourself, you were seeing someone, hmm?”
You buried your face in your hands, trying your best not to scream in embarassment. If the earth could swallow you whole, it would’ve done so by now, but no, you were faced with the teasing of a wolf who enjoyed it clearly.
Would you have called it date? Or was he just teasing? “I—It was never discussed, I just thought-”
“Oh, so you didn’t want to go for one?” He smirked.
“Yes! I mean no! Ah, you’re making this difficult for me.” Your fur felt hot on your face, and when you heard the light, easy-going chuckle come from in front of you, you couldn’t help but think he was just doing it to annoy you.
“Ah you’re really cute when you get flustered.” He sighed, continuing on as if he hadn’t put that compliment out there in the open. He finished his meal and you gave the rest of yours for him to finish (it was hard to when you remained flustered for the rest of your ‘date’).
The two of you paid and left with few words spoken, except your mind was whirred and spinning with all sorts of questions. The less you spoke and the minutes ticked by, the more you panicked.
“Hey, I’m sorry for making it this-“ You turned on your heel as you kept walking, clumsily your foot got caught on a broken cobble piece, stumbling forwards so quickly, you didn’t have any time to register that your body was falling too fast.
The ground was what you expected to meet, and when you braced for the hard earth, you didn’t expect to be enveloped in the warm and soft arms. A smell of cedar and pine surrounded you gently, arms catching you with ease.
“Falling for me, huh, corderito?”
You blinked, warmth spreading through you, heart racing in the cage of your chest. No way did you catch you. It was only until it dawned on you that your feet weren’t touching the ground, you found yourself eye to eye level with Muerte.
“Ah,” you looked away from him, trying not to look directly in his teasing gaze, his bloodshot eyes were vivid and glowing, “I wasn’t expecting that to happen.”
Muerte didn’t seem bothered by the clumsiness that came from you, rather there was amusement in the way he held you. “Careful now, you may fall into the arms of the wrong guy.”
“Why, you worried I’ll jump into some bad guy’s arms?” You were the one to inquire teasingingly. Muerte met your gaze, and that alone had made you shudder. He didn’t need to lean that far into your face, inches from you. “Puede atraer a las personas equivocadas.”
It took everything in your body not to surge forward and kiss him: the way he was so close and inviting. The silence could’ve been broken with a pin dropping, neither of you speaking yet only staring for some time. With some relcutance, he settled you back down, and you almost realised how badly you missed the way he held you.
“Come now, let’s get you back home.”
-
The walk back up the hill was silent yet not as awkward as you thought it would be. The air was filled with the growing sounds of music, growing quieter the further you left the town. When you looked across the town, it was tiny in comparison to how it felt being surrounded down there; you felt like a giant, looking over tiny ants.
“It’s peaceful, isn’t it?” You asked Lobo after some time.
“It is, but wouldn’t you grow restless after some time up here, alone?” His voice dragged the last word out. It was like a hush or murmur of the wind, starlting and haunting, yet his presence alone made you feel surprisingly safe.
“I’ve been up here for quite some time. And though, I’m jealous of my friends who live directly there, I don’t think I could ever be down there, all the time.” You laughed to yourself, hugging your smaller body.
Lobo hummed in thought, moving ahead as if he knew the way back to yours. “It is something I would rather agree on.”
Neither of you said anything again as he led, but you had time to think about what he said. Was he lonely? How could he be—it wasn’t as if you knew what his personal life was before the two of you met, but it was a curisity you held the more you were with him.
“Do you ever get lonely?”
He paused in movement, and you observed the way his long ear twitched, unaffected by the chill of the night. “Sometimes,” he drawled thoughtfully. “I think I’ve grown used to being ignored, only for a time.”
“How so?”
“I wander these lands, watching. It is rather what I would say my job is in this world, and I’ve been doing it for some time. I watch, observe those, watch them live their lives; get married, have kin, have their highs and lows in life, and when it begins to draw to an end, I come in, give them a hand and we move on.” He spoke matter-of-factly. “Though, I do get a thrill in those who don’t spend their life well. It’s quite fun to get a change once in a while.”
“Lobo,” you spoke carefully. “When you said your name was Muerte, you weren’t joking-“
“I am Death, yes.” He spoke coolly, the flickering of his cape came up for a moment, and something silver glinted on the side of his thigh, disappearing before you could even register what it was. “I come and go when it’s time for being to move on, and I’ll do the same with you.”
You felt rigid in your spot, looking up at him in both horror and twisted curiousity. “Do you know when my time will come? It’s… not tonight, is it?”
“No,” his was a odd sense of reassurance, “You will live a good, long life, I know that.” He knelt down to you, approaching you as if you were an injured animal. “I have enjoyed this one night of a break, and I enjoyed it with you.” He was kind and careful to press a chaste kiss to your forehead, standing back to his full height once more. “We will meet again, sometime, Y/N.”
“Yes.” You didn’t understand his words at first, too hopeful, too joyful to see him, and when you blinked he was gone once more.
No, it wasn’t a hopeful expectation you would see him soon, it was a see you again when your time comes.

who follows the rules anyway?
Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4 / Part 5 / Part 6 / Part 7 / Part 8
pairing : anthony lockwood x reader
summary : y/n gets fired from Fittes and seeks refuge with George, only to find out he works with the worst guy she's ever met
word count : 4.5k
content : in this part you get angst, reader and lockwood’s backstory and some plot with a side of ‘i didn’t know where else to go’ in subtext :)))
---
They ate dinner in silence. It was clear that the two guys she had in front of her weren’t used to having people over. They were sitting around the kitchen table, notes and drawings covering the cloth beneath their plates. She read the messages closest to her. Many were about cases they probably worked over the past couple of weeks. But here and there she noticed some insults directed at Lockwood and she was glad to see she wasn’t the only one who thought those things. A drawing of a visitor caught her attention. It wasn’t very detailed but its expression seemed sad and lonely nonetheless.
“Who’s that?” she asked.
“That’s the ghost we have to take care of tomorrow. It’s probably a Type One so we should be done quickly.” George answered.
“Where is the house you have to take care of?”
“Hopkins Street in Soho.”
“I’ve been on a case near there! Though it was more dangerous, the Type Two we had to contain was more threatening than we had anticipated. And the house was big too, are you gonna be okay just the two of you?”
“I’m sure we’ll be fine.” Lockwood cut in.
“We could always add a third person, worst case scenario they just stand by…”
“I’d be happy to be there in reinforcement… And that way I could pay you back for letting me stay here.”
Lockwood was far from enthusiastic about the arrangement. y/n saw his jaw tighten as George accepted her offer to tag along.
“I’ll go to Satchell’s to restock.” He got up and aimed for the door. “You and y/n can prep the bags so we can leave when I come back.” He left the table without looking back. There was no room for discussion. It’s like he couldn’t get out fast enough. I guess the feeling is mutual then. But who cared if he couldn’t stand to be in her company either? At least she could repay George by helping him out back. And that way she didn’t have to figure out what her next move should be for another day. She could pretend to be a proper agent one more time and forget about her disgrace.
George immediately filled her in on all the research he had done on the case. Apparently even for a Type One explaining every little detail couldn’t wait until tomorrow. She listened to him ramble on about the history of the house on Hopkins Street and felt at peace for the first time that day. It reminded her of their walks back from a job early in the morning. She paid attention as much as she could until her eyes decided to close on their own.
----
It was getting unbearably cold and the fact that she was restrained to a small iron circle didn’t help her condition. The night had been a disaster so far. It made her regret Fittes, her old teammates, her decision to stay here and help. She wanted to be a true professional and apply her impeccable methods. What could be better than to follow Marissa Fittes’ instructions to the letter? What could possibly be worth denying everything her supervisors had taught her her entire career? Anthony Lockwood’s sheer will apparently justified changing everything.
It had started as soon as they had set foot inside the house. She wanted to be thorough and efficient. She offered that the group went through the house together to look at each room and possibly locate the source before facing any type of ghost. But their leader had decided otherwise and didn’t even bother to listen. He sidelined her immediately.
“You’re here in reinforcement, right? So we’ll come get you if we need a hand.” He had told her before leaving her behind surrounded by an iron chain. It made her furious. Sure, she hadn’t exactly been warm yesterday, or even polite, but still. He could really use her training and her talent. His stubbornness was really stupidity at this point. And what kind of agency didn’t have supervisors?
She was going on and on in her head about everything that was wrong with this situation when George interrupted her train of thoughts as he entered the room.
“We still haven’t found anything, we’re taking a break in the kitchen. Care to join us?”
Of course, Lockwood wouldn’t have bothered to tell her that. Instead, he greeted her with
“That tea is really awful. Who made it?” he said with a wince.
“I did, and at least I was nice enough to bring tea for everyone.” She went to pour herself a cup from a thermos she had packed.
“Well, it was your job.”
“My job was to prep the bags with George, not play housekeeper.” She said coolly without looking up. She turned her back to him so he couldn’t see the look on her face. That tea really was terrible.
“The tea isn’t the only thing that’s bitter tonight.” He said with a smirk.
She turned around to face him.
“Tea isn’t part of a regulation kit.”
“In our agency it kind of is.” He cut in.
“What I’m trying to say is that you could appreciate the intention instead of making your snide comments. Earlier you literally walked through the door shouting orders without helping us even a little and now you keep criticizing me. You can’t spend the evening reprimanding everything I do.”
“I’m in charge and I can when the work isn’t done properly.”
The room fell silent. She wanted to scream at him, hit something, anything. But this was still a haunted house. She needed to keep her emotions under control. No matter how much she wanted to put him in danger specifically, George didn’t deserve this. Ignoring the satisfied look that Lockwood gave her, she turned to George.
“Is he always so difficult to work with? I’m surprised you haven’t lost your sanity.”
“He’s actually tolerable most of the time.”
Lockwood smiled at her with a “I told you so” grin.
“But you obviously have quite an effect on him.” He told her with a wink.
His smile disappeared instantly and it was George’s turn to laugh.
“Instead of having you two brooding in separate corners of the room, maybe we could try and do the job we were hired to do?”
They went for another tour of the house, using all their senses to try to detect any activity. The only result they got was a drop in temperatures which was a start. They settled into the coldest room, figuring the source was probably nearby. They set up a circle in the center and the boys started to search anything that could be the cause of the haunting. As y/n went to pick up a figurine carved in ivory on a shelf an annoying voice interrupted her.
“I need you to stay in the circle while we look for the source.”
“But my Touch is better than yours and George’s combined! Stop being a jerk and let me do my job for the first time this evening.”
“We’ll tell you if we need reinforcement.”
As George was about to protest she raised her voice.
“I’m getting really sick of your behavior. Stop treating me like I’m a beginner. I can handle myself. I worked for the most prestigious team in the most prestigious agency for God’s sake!”
“Well, you’re not anymore. Your behavior hasn’t been much better and until I know that I can trust you I’m not letting you touch anything in this house.”
“Fine. If that’s how it’s gonna be I’ll be better off anywhere else.”
She left the room in a rush. She was putting both of her teammates in danger anyway with how angry she was getting. It was better for everyone if she left.
She went down the stairs in a hurry and slammed the door on her way out. The fresh air outside helped a little. But she would need a two-hour walk at least to calm down. She started to walk down the street as she heard footsteps running behind her.
Lockwood caught up with her and grabbed her arm to make her turn around.
“Where do you think you’re going? You don’t have anywhere to go and we organized the night with you as backup. If we don’t have you standing by you’re putting both of us at risk if something goes wrong.”
“I’m putting you two at risk anyway with how angry I am at you. I thought getting to know you would change the opinion I had of you but I was right from the start you’re just an arrogant jerk.”
“And I was right to think you were just pretentious and helpless that night we met. If it weren’t for me you’d be dead but instead you disrespect me in my own house and act surprised when I don’t trust you on a case.”
So he did remember that night. She tried to hide her surprise.
“Oh right so I’m supposed to be grateful for you ruining a perfect opportunity for my career.”
“You didn’t need me to ruin your career you handled it very well yourself.”
That stung. She turned around before he could see the tears that prickled her eyes and stormed off into the night.
“Nice one Lockwood! And I’m the one with zero social skill.” George said from the doorstep before going back inside, leaving Lockwood alone in the deserted street.
---
“y/n I need you to keep the visitor under control while we look for the source!” Kipps shouted as he ran up the stairs, followed closely by Bobby.
“But wouldn’t it be better if-” She tried to point out that her talent would be most useful if she went to look for the source herself but the boys were already gone. Reluctantly she went back to the living room, using her senses to see if the visitor had come back yet.
She was alone for now. Just her and her frustration to keep her company. After a week of strenuous efforts and late nights, her leader still didn’t seem to warm up to her. Obviously if he kept her aside and gave her tasks that didn’t let her show her full potential he could never be impressed with what she could do. But she kept her head down, it was only the first week, she needed to follow his directions to remain on his good side, or at least his neutral side. And if the visitor showed up she would do her best to fight it, maybe that would show him. She tried listening to reason the best she could, but the truth was that Kipps’s behavior vexed her. She couldn’t help feeling underestimated and a kind of sorrow rose in her. What more could she do to make him notice her? His approval was the only thing she sought at the moment. It consumed her so much that she didn’t realize the visitor had resurfaced. It started creeping up behind her when suddenly she felt a presence as the temperature dropped several degrees.
She ducked at the last minute and narrowly avoided the ghost that flew above her reaching for her neck. The phantasm was now hovering between her and the iron chain, she had no refuge. She drew her rapier unaffected and ready to fight. The ghost tried to attack again, it was aggressive and used her frustration to its advantage. She formed complicated patterns with her sword to keep it away from her. They stayed face to face like this for several minutes with no sign from Bobby nor Kipps. Her arm grew tired of this face to face. It was getting harder and harder to draw the ghost off but her mind stayed focused. Fortunately, it was hard to break her spirit. That was until a cramp painfully twisted the arm that held her rapier. The pain was so sudden that she grabbed her arm and dropped her weapon as a reflex. Probably the worst reflex to have in this situation. As her iron defense touched the floor the visitor attacked. She ducked again, getting closer to the iron chain. As she went to step inside, she tripped and broke the circle. Her rapier was out of reach. She grabbed the chain and tried to fend off the ghost with the chain, not using the flares at her belt that certainly would have caught fire inside. Where were Bobby and Kipps? She could really use a hand right now. As the phantasm got very close to touching her the door flew open.
Finally. In the darkness she only saw a silhouette in a long coat drawing the visitor’s attention away from her. She was thankful but she didn’t recognize who it was. Bobby or Kipps would have been coming from upstairs so she wondered how this stranger could have known when to barge in. Nevertheless, the diversion was enough for her to grab her rapier, ready to fight once more. The living room was lit by the ghost lamp outside. She turned around to see her rescuer fending off the phantasm. He was quick on his feet, the movements of his sword clear and precise. His posture looked elegant even in a fight. He seemed completely at ease and it didn’t look like he needed her help. Once more she felt rather useless. She remained alert but couldn’t do more than watch the scene unfold. It was like the visitor had forgotten she was in the room standing right behind it. As the fight went on the guy in front of her tried tempting it more and more each time he dodged a sudden move from the ghost. She slowly walked around to join him on the other side of the room as the ghost was getting closer each time it tried to reach him. What was he doing? The point wasn’t to tempt the ghosts but to keep them away. It’s like he found it amusing somehow. She felt a burst of energy and a shiver ran down her spine. It was getting particularly angry. She hurried to reach his side telling him to get out of the way. She held her sword high, ready to fight off the new blow she was expecting when instead she was pushed behind. She lost her balance as she was shoved against a sofa sitting in the corner of the room and tripped the reckless idiot in the same movement. He held on to the armrest to quickly stand up and stood between her and the visitor. It was getting close, too close. At the last moment it disappeared. The air warmed up and the tension that filled the room was replaced with relief. Only for a moment though.
“Are you crazy? You could’ve gotten us both killed if my team hadn’t just located the source!” She pushed him away as she stood up from the sit he had pushed her into.
“A good evening to you too. What a lovely night isn’t it?”
She looked at him in disbelief.
“You’re not even gonna acknowledge the fact you almost got killed three seconds ago?”
A voice came from the hallway.
“Tony! To what do we owe the pleasure?”
The boy rolled his eyes at her before turning around.
“Shouldn’t you be alone in your big house at this time of night?”
She had never seen Kipps like this before. Sure, he was proud most of the time, but never to that extent.
“You should thank me for saving your teammate from a certain death. I did your reputation a favor here.” He talked about her like she wasn’t standing right next to him. How could someone she met 5 minutes ago irritate her so much?
“I’m sure she could handle herself just fine.”
“I could but he didn’t really give me a chance.” She said, glaring at him. “I didn’t need your help, I had the situation under control.”
“A simple thank you would have sufficed. Next time I’ll just enjoy the show from outside then.” He gave her one last look before exiting the room.
He left the same way he had come without looking back. Or at least she thought. Outside he had glanced one more time through the window where he had first seen her battling the phantasm, his lips curving slightly as he made his way back home.
---
The memories of that night kept coming back to her, fueling her rage as she made her way down Wardour Street. He didn’t let her do her job then and he didn’t let her do her job now. And he was acting like an arrogant prick with a smug look on his face while he was doing it. Her head was heavy with the events of the past two days and she felt overwhelmed. She was angry at the universe for turning her life upside down. She had a plan and she was following it. Why did things have to change so suddenly? She was mad at her instincts for misguiding her and she hated the way she kept overreacting. The further she walked the more anger she realized she had to unpack. She had weeks of frustration from all the efforts she made to gain Kipps’s trust and approval and the ironic twist of fate that undid all that in just one day. She also had the hurt from El’s betrayal that still twisted her stomach. The uneasy feeling that something wasn’t right with Mrs Dufour. The shame of being fired. The unbearable weight of figuring out her future now that she threw away the one that she had designed for herself. She wasn’t ready to deal with that just yet and decided to focus on tonight instead. Who cared if she didn’t have a future, at least she still had a friend in the city that very kindly accepted to take her in. Well, until she left him and his colleague alone in a haunted house that is.
She regretted taking her anger out on Lockwood, though some of it was well deserved. She actually didn’t know how to feel about him. Somehow she was convinced he could have been very nice to work with if she had given him a chance from the start. On the other hand, she still wasn’t over how he literally kept her from doing her job all those weeks back. And the fact he behaved the exact same way tonight certainly didn’t help. Still, she hoped they were safe even with her gone.
The stroll did help a lot. She had been gone for half an hour but the fog in her mind already started to lift. She still needed some alone time but she really should apologize for her behavior later. The guys wouldn’t be home for a couple more hours anyway. No need to rush. She could always apologize tomorrow. And she would owe them one less night at their place.
She made her way to the border of the Thames, passing Scotland Yard on her way. It was one of the only buildings with light coming from the windows. She followed the river south, taking deep breaths to try and ease her mind. A gentle breeze rustled her hair and she finally allowed herself to relax for the first time today. The water made her feel safer and the quiet streets made her appreciate the city even more. It was a shame she couldn’t do this more often without taking risks. She could have stayed there for hours but as she leaned on a banister she noticed a boat getting weirdly close to her. It kept coming her way until a girl with a straw hat on came into view. She pointed to somewhere behind her mouthing something. Was it directed at her? She frowned mouthing “what?” back to the girl. She insisted. ‘Watch out.’, she finally understood. She turned around to see men gather and she ducked on instinct. The only people out at this time of night couldn’t be good news.
Curled up behind a brick wall, she slowly craned her neck to try and see what this was all about. There were three men standing a few feet away from her. They were partially hidden by a tree. She moved slightly to her right to have a better view. Relic men. It was very clear that this meant trouble and she needed to get out of there. She turned around, hidden behind the wall to thank the girl on the boat but she was already out of sight.
The easiest way for her to get out of there unseen was to go back the same way she came, practically on her knees the whole time to remain covered. She made slow progress but she would soon be able to reach Scotland yard and from there she could keep walking the other way. She didn’t really care where she was going as long as she was out of danger. She was reaching the last few feet when she heard a familiar voice that made her blood run cold.
“Good evening gentlemen.”
George was right. She was right. Mrs. Dufour was standing there, casually chatting with relic men. Her dismissal seemed even more unfair now. She wasn’t in such a hurry now. She could finally get her answers and get to the bottom of this.
“Did you bring it?” one of the men asked though it sounded more like an order.
“Of course I did. Here, I’m sure you’ll get a good price for it but I want 25%, no less.”
The man closest to her laughed as he dismissed her with a hand.
“Yeah, right.”
“It’s an original from Mrs. Overton’s ancestors. A piece from a prominent family like hers has got to be worth a lot more than the other pieces I brought you. And I’m putting my job on the line for this. 25 or I’ll find someone else.”
Did she really say Mrs. Overton? She was selling the clock she was supposed to bring back in a few days? y/n couldn’t believe it. How was she going to justify the missing piece to their client?
The shock made it hard to breath. She had flashbacks from the day before when she heard voices outside Mrs. Dufour’s office. She tried to step away slowly and discreetly but the friction of her feet on the ground made a sudden noise that made the group look in her direction. She stayed ducked but she heard one of the men get closer to investigate. She only had one option if she wanted to get out of here unharmed. She stood up and immediately started running. She could hear one of the men yelling to go after her from afar but she didn’t turn back to check. She hoped the supervisor didn’t recognize her but now was not the time to worry about this detail. She had more chance losing them if she got lost in the streets instead of following the river. She made a turn on her left, hoping they would lose sight of her. Instead she felt a sharp pain in her left arm. How could she get a cramp in this part of her body while running? Without slowing down she passed a hand up and down her arm to ease the pain. Instead of finding the soft fabric of her jacket her fingers met something wet. She looked down at her bloodied fingers trying to keep up her pace. Not only were these men chasing her but they were throwing knives at her. Letting them catch her wasn’t an option from the start but even less so now. She tried to ignore the sharp ache and kept running until she found a hiding spot in a deserted alleyway. She used the trashcans and piles of cardboard boxes to avoid her pursuers. They ran past her without looking back. She waited a few minutes trying to calm her breathing down.
The street was silent again, she couldn’t hear any voices or steps coming her way. She peered out from her hiding spot and only saw the ghost lamp at the end of the street. She came out and sighed in relief. Her mind had gone completely numb but as she stepped out of the alley she became painfully aware of the situation. Panic started to rise inside her. She wanted to curl up in the middle of the street as her breathing accelerated. Somehow she still wasn’t getting enough air. Her lungs hurt, the world started spinning around her. The wound in her arm was burning, she felt blood running down her arm. All her senses were blinded by the pain and the stress, she couldn’t think straight. Behind her she heard something crack. A leaf, a branch maybe or just a rat passing by. But that was enough to send her running as fast as she could. Her instinct was the only thing guiding her at this point. She needed to get help, to find people she could trust. She needed to go somewhere safe.
---
All the lights were out inside the house. They probably hadn’t gone home yet. The case could have turned more complicated than anticipated. But she didn’t feel like waiting for them in the street with blood trickling down her arm. She felt dizzy and lightheaded, her throat was sore from the cold autumn breeze and her wound wasn’t getting any better. She climbed the few steps in front of the door, her right hand in front of her in case she tripped. As she got to  the door, she kneeled and retrieved her hooks from the sock where she always kept them. Her dad had always told her this skill would come in handy. At the time she didn’t believe him but still let her teach her. It was a fun father-daughter activity after all. But right now, with the pain she was in, she truly blessed him for having weird hobbies.
In three clicks she unlocked the door and stepped inside without worrying about the noise she made. Her head was heavy and relief flooded her as soon as she closed the door behind her. It didn’t matter that her day had ended up worse than the day before. It didn’t matter that this seemed unconceivable yesterday. The fight, Dufour, the chase, all of it was behind her now. She was safe. As she stepped deeper into the house the walls started spinning. The masks on the wall looked like they were mocking her. She felt the urge to dismiss them with the back of her hand. A sharp pain shot through her arm as she lifted it. She cried out and didn’t notice Lockwood coming down the stairs.
“y/n? What are you doing?”
She hadn’t heard him coming and jumped in surprise, prompting another sharp pain in her left arm.
“y/n? What’s wrong? Wait how did you get in?”
At that she smiled faintly. But her head was spinning too much. Her knees buckled. She saw movement in front of her as the floor got closer before she collapsed in the hall.

Russia was big. But Sova’s hometown wasn’t. He didn’t know if he was thankful for that or not. You didn’t seem to mind bumping into him though, so maybe it wasn’t such a bad thing.
Buying groceries for his babushka turned into inviting you to his home while his grandma made hot chocolate for both of you. It was like the old times, as he remembered it fondly. But somehow with all the stress he had in his work and life, he didn’t seem to remember how time flew by so fast.
You were perplexed when he invited you for a quick chat when your carts collided in the supermarket. He was still himself, although aged and battle scarred. Nothing out of the ordinary for a hunter.
“It’s been too long. Since when did you get back?” You asked him, parking your cart to the side to face him. He was leaning on the handle bars with his arms, bent over his groceries. His silvery blonde hair was braided, laying on his shoulder, lose hairs framing his face. Tilting his head to the side, he recalls the time. “About two days ago. I was too tired to explore immediately so I’ve only been out today.”
He smiles up at you with an almost puppy like grin. “You’ve changed,” he comments, eyeing your face then body, noticing how you dressed more womanly. You smile a tight-lipped smile, primping your hair behind your ear. “Well, it has been years. Time has aged us both.” You chuckled, and he shakes his head. “You’re still full of life as I remember you. Even more so now.”
Sova couldn’t help but stare at you even as you caught him doing so. He longed to see a familiar face when he got back for a break. And yours was the one he longed for most. He blushed as he eyed your silhouette. Somehow, he still feels giddy whenever you’re around, even years later. As the saying goes: first love never dies.
As you both pushed your carts around for things you needed, you talked about life. You were happy that he was more confident now, in contrast to how shy and meek he was before despite towering over most people.
“It is similar to the army, but very different at the same time. I’m able to put my hunting skills to good use,” he says about his job in the protocol. “I’m glad it faired well for you. Seems like there were no regrets in leaving all those years before,” you speak in an almost sullen voice. His mouth opens to protest, but he doesn’t say a word and just nods. His heart clenches at your comment.
When you both arrived at his little home, his babushka was already there to greet you. You hug her warmly, greeting your usual greetings. You met her occasionally, and in those times, she’s always mentioned how much she misses seeing you with her grandson. You could only laugh; those times were long gone.
When he got involved in more confidential jobs, it required him to travel more. It put a strain on your relationship, which often led to fights about commitment and future plans. About how much you really loved each other, and what you were willing to sacrifice. You were both young back then, and you were each other’s first lover.
Your principles did not align: you wanted something serious, and he was looking for the next big thing. You focused on this small town, while he had his sights to the vast hunting grounds he could venture in. Out of naivety, you were left out from the bigger picture. He was finding himself, and in turn, lost you.
And as the time that passed would prove it, not all of his decisions were the best ones.
You both sat in silence for a moment, facing the window as the snow crashed against it. It was warm inside his home, the fire pit burning brightly in the corner. He tipped his glass towards him and looked at his own reflection. He felt a familiar feeling in this exact same scenario. With both of you holding hot cups of chocolate, sitting side by side, watching the window. He smiled to himself before he spoke.
“I missed you,” he admits, looking at you. You return his gaze with a sad smile. “I missed  you too… it’s been years since before. Sometimes it feels just like yesterday we were here in these very chairs… planning our lives,” you chuckle.
“We wanted a small house with a large yard,” he recalls.
“Flower beds on both sides,” you follow up.
“Near the woods so I could hunt anytime I wanted.”
“A stable for horses.”
“A tree house for the kids.”
“How many kids did you want Sasha?”
“Four, and you wanted only one.”
“I got what I wanted,” you smiled excitedly. He raises a brow, smile dropping. “What do you mean?” He asks wearily, and you pull out your wallet. Taking out a photo, you hand it to him. “That’s my child. Turning 3 this year,” you smile, pointing at the photo, leaning closer to him. His heart beats against his chest; he could hear it against his skull.
You had a family.
“It all went well in the end, didn’t it? We both got what we wanted,” you continue, taking your photo and staring at it. He looked at you with a different thought now. He couldn’t tell what it was until you spoke again. “I got my house with a family, you got your job and glory. We both got our happy ending.”
He felt a sting of regret. Regret of leaving you, and regret for what could’ve been.
You sipped on the hot chocolate as he clenched his own glass, his heavy sigh visible. He avoids your eyes. “I cannot say that I got my happy ending.” He chuckles sadly. “This… what I have now… the family I found… I would not trade it for the world.” He starts, remembering the Valorant protocol. Brimstone, Sage, Viper, Jett, Phoenix and everyone else. He clenched his fist and smiled fondly. “But I will always wonder what could have been. If I had stayed and made it work.”
You look at him with an empty look, hoping he’d explain more. Setting your cup down, you observed his face. He was looking down at the floors, his hair loose from its braid, smile wavering. “I love you. I still do.” He admits, raising his head to look at you again, the pain in his chest was almost unbearable.
Impulsively you chuckle at his confession, gritting your teeth. His chest felt tight at that moment. “It’s a little too late for that, don’t you think?” You joked, but you meant it. “When you left, I wanted to wait for you. But things never really end up the way we want them don’t they?” You smiled at him, caressing his arm.
He flinches at your touch but does not pull away.
“Do you think we would’ve worked if I stayed?” He asked curiously, hopefully. He wanted to at least have this closure.
You stare into his eyes, and you could see all the pain he felt at the moment. He was still the same as his younger self: naïve and vulnerable. As much as he’d aged, he did not move on from the past. He could not forget you. And he was shocked to see you so mature and moving on without him.
You smile at him gently and reach for his cheek, caressing it gently. “In that other world, you would have made me the happiest person alive,” you answered honestly. He leans against your touch. It would be the last time he’d ever feel something like this.
He drove you back to your home. It looked exactly like what you both wanted. A small house with a large yard, flowerbeds covered in snow, a tree house in the works. As he carried your groceries to the front door, he was greeted by a young child that had your eyes and hair. She calls for you as you take her into your arms. “Uncle Sasha! Say hi, say un-cle Sa-sha,” you tell her, and she mimics you.
Sova shakes hands with your child, her hand so small compared to his own. It took all of him not to cry at that moment. She looked just like you.
“Take care Sasha. I hope you find your happy ending,” you smiled at him, waving your child’s hand goodbye. “Take care as well. I hope you don’t mind me sending you gifts for the little one?” He asks, waving back, and you nod in response. Before he takes off, he says one last thing.
“Your happy ending is my happy ending.”

Can we have some platonic or romantic reader x Zane from lego ninjago?
Sure! I’m gonna go with romantic <3 (also this will take place in the time skip between seasons five and six)
Warnings: food/eating mention, some sad Zane
Relationship: established Zane x gn reader
Tumblr media
Dating Zane would turn out to be pretty hard. Of course, your new boyfriend was practically perfect— he was smart, kind, funny, and he could cook! But he was also a nindroid, which made him stand out in public.
Zane was by nature a quiet person, and would much rather stay home instead of go out only to be mobbed by curious people, or fans of his.
On one of these date nights, you sat on a bench near the end of one of Ninjago’s fishing piers, waiting for Zane to pick you up. The Destiny’s Bounty usually sat idle in the open ocean, so when you went to visit, Zane always have you a lift on his ice dragon.
Though ninjago city had been warm and sunny all day, the setting sun and proximity to the ocean made you shiver.
Something caught your attention. Blue light glowing against the darkening sky, reflecting off the calm sea. Yep, that’s Zane.
You smiled up at him as he landed the barely-corporeal ice dragon on the pier, making the old wooden planks creak.
Zane slid off of the dragon to meet you. “You look nice,” he said with a big smile.
You blushed slightly, thanking him. Zane gave you compliments often, but it still made you so happy.
Zane helped you climb onto the back of the dragon before quickly jumping on to sit behind you. He gave you a quick hug. “Are you cold?” He asked, having noticed you shivering.
“Maybe a little bit,” you said with a shaky laugh. In truth, the combination of Zane’s elemental dragon, the chilly wind from the ocean, and his cold metal body against your back were making you freezing.
“Don’t worry, I prepared a nice hot meal for when we get home.”
You smiled. “That sounds great!”
Once Zane’s dragon took off and began flying, the rushing wind made it hard to talk. The lull in conversation gave you an opportunity to reflect on your time together.
You had been dating Zane for a little over a year now, and things were going great. At first it was hard to get used to his hectic life— soon after you started dating, he got swept up in a huge fight with a bunch of ghosts, and that had been pretty stressful— but other than that, it had been smooth sailing.
It had been pretty funny when you first met his team— the rest of the ninja certainly were just as odd as Zane, in their own unique ways. Though you didn’t see them as often, they were really friendly, and you got along well.
When you reached the Bounty, Zane helped out off the dragon and onto the swaying deck of the ship. The dragon disappeared, and the two of you were left in near darkness, the dim glow of Zane’s blue eyes casting you in light.
Zane breathed a sigh. “It’s been a while since I’ve had to keep the dragon out that long… next time we should just pick you up with the boat.” He said with a small laugh.
“I thought conjuring an energy dragon was about conquering your fears,” you said as the two of you made your way into the cabin of the ship.
Zane shrugged. “Well, I’m always a little nervous when you fly with me— I don’t want you to get hurt.” He led you into the kitchen
You smiled warmly. “That’s sweet, Zane— I’m never worried, you know… I feel safe with you.” You said shyly, avoiding eye contact by taking a look at the food he’d prepared.
“Aw, thanks—“ Zane started, but was quickly interrupted.
“How did you know my favorite!” You said excitedly, grabbing a dish to serve yourself. “It looks so good!”
Zane laughed, beaming. “Well, Nya told me you mentioned it to her a while back…”
You smiled wide. He went out of his way to do this… you thanked him, getting yourself a portion of the food.
“Of course, I love seeing you happy.” Zane said earnestly as he put a pot of tea on the modern-looking hibachi in the dining room. As a nindroid, Zane didn’t have the organs to eat food, but he did love tea.
You sat down on the cushion next to where Zane always sat— you usually sat across from him (better for talking, you know) but that night you wanted to be close to him.
“So how’ve you been?” You asked, still focused on your food.
“Well, I’m pretty pleased— we’ve had the day off from training, so that was nice.” Zane said, with a smile in his voice.
You looked up to catch him staring at you— he quickly turned forward to pour himself a cup of tea, spilling a little.
“What are you looking at?” You asked, wanting to tease him a little.
“You,” he answered truthfully as he used his sleeve to wipe up the spill. He then took a sip, burning his tongue. “Ow!”
“How can you get burned if you’re a nindroid?” You asked conversationally. “Plus, you’re the master of ice.”
“I can feel some things, you know.” He said, sticking two cold metal fingers in his mouth to sooth the burn. “Mostly on my face.”
Your face heated up. “You can feel when we kiss?” You weren’t quite sure why that made you embarrassed.
“Of course!” Zane said, going back to drinking his tea, slowly and carefully this time. “What did you think?” He smiled, amused.
You laughed awkwardly. “I don’t know. I guess that’s normal.”
Zane nodded. “I like it, by the way.”
“What?”
“Just so you don’t worry about it. I like kissing and hugging you.” Zane stated plainly.
You smiled, looking down at the table. “…Yeah, you too.” It took a lot of getting used to to be so physically affectionate with someone who was literally made of titanium, but it was nice.
Zane was quiet for a moment. “Does it bother you that I’m not normal?”
You were surprised at the question. You didn’t think rational, smart Zane would be insecure about something like that, if at all. “No way! I think you’re great just the way you are.”
Zane smiled. “Even though I’m cold?”
“Yeah, I don’t mind!” You said reassuringly, hugging him.
“I used to be more human. Have I ever told you?”
You shook your head. “Well, I know you got rebuilt…”
“Here, check this out.” Zane pulled out his phone and scrolled through most of his photos, all the way back to the beginning. There was a group photo of the entire ninja team.
It took you a moment to recognize him. Zane zoomed in on a smiling face in the middle. You saw a tall teenage boy with short blond hair wearing a white ninja gi. And he did look human.
“Wow, that does look pretty different,” you didn’t really know what to say.
Zane nodded, smiling at the picture a little sadly. “You know, I used to think I was a human for a while. Funny that I never realized.” He turned off his phone and put it away.
Zane still smiled as he sipped his tea, but the energy in the room was different. Bittersweet.
“Sorry for all that. I didn’t mean to ruin the mood.” Zane said, trying to laugh it off.
You leaned against him, still eating your food, knowing it would diffuse the tension. “No, it’s okay. I like hearing what you’re thinking.”
Zane nodded. “I… sometimes wish I could be human again. Well, not again, but you know…” he said. He sounded so tired.
You nodded, though you didn’t really understand.
“…so thanks.“
You met Zane’s eyes again. “What do you mean?”
Zane leaned his head against yours, a genuinely happy smile on his face. “My life is very… weird. I always have to save Ninjago from ghosts, and snakes, and even other nindroids. Being with you makes me feel normal.” He explained.
You felt the exact opposite, but in a good way— as an average citizen of Ninjago City, you didn’t have the most exciting life. Meeting Zane and the rest of the ninja had made your weekends very eventful. This new friend group was a lot of fun.
“I love you, Zane.”
Zane’s smile broadened. “I love you too.”
Zane kissed you then. It was cold, but not bad. In fact, it was the best kiss you had ever shared.
A/N: hi I hope you like this! I had fun writing it :) Zane is one of my favorite characters to write for in Ninjago!

Stupido | A Station 19 fanfiction
A/N: A quick follow up to this fic. Requested by the travic ceo @travichughes! Be sure to check her blog out.
Warnings: All the Italian is from google translate so don’t come for me! Happy reading!
-
To say Carina is angry is an understatement.
When she first met her wife’s team, she could immediately tell that Travis Montgomery and Victoria Hughes were inseparable.
So, she never expected him to leave her out to dry.
Vic instantly became one of her favorite people. The youngest firefighter is a ball of sunshine, and her personality and humor sometimes reminds Carina of her stupid baby brother, who left her too soon. Seeing Vic so broken, so hurt…nearly shattered the Italian into two.
And, typically, her sadness grows into anger. This circumstance is no exception.
Maya contacted Chief Ross, letting her know that Vic and her would be taking the day off. The chief held a lot of sympathy for Vic, knowing how strongly the firefighter held her emotions. She also complimented Maya on how good of a friend she is, which surprised Maya.
However, Carina decided to go in, as it is a clinic day and she has patients. She held in her anger for Travis until he approached her.
“Hey Carina. Do you know where Vic is? I haven’t seen her since yesterday morning. I tried calling her but she hasn’t answered.”
Carina feels a bubble of anger, and doesn’t respond, but drags Travis into his bunk and shuts the door.
“Do you have any idea how much of a thick headed stronzo you are?! Mio dio, ti preoccupi solo adesso?!”
Travis is incredibly confused. First, he only understands half of what Carina just said to him, second, the last time he saw her this angry was last year when Jack ordered pineapple on pizza.
“What are you…” He begins, but is cut off by the raging doctor. “No, no, no, you do not speak. Only listen. You have been so caught up in this stupid mayor race and your new idiota boyfriend that you have completely left vic behind! How could you?” Carina rants.
“Carina I-.” Once again, Travis is cut off. “It is not my place to tell you what happened, but Victoria was on a tough call yesterday, she was so distraught that Maya and I found her sobbing in her bunk. Victoria Hughes, the most bright, beautiful ball of sunshine looked completely broken. Maya and I took her to our home, and she is still there with Maya.”
Travis sighs. “I know I’ve been shitty, and I’m sorry. I really am. But Carina, she’s everything to me. I can’t lose her.”
“You won’t, Travis. But, you’ve been a bad friend. You need to make it up to her, and promise you won’t leave her behind. I don’t doubt that she’ll forgive you for this, but still. Be her person, like you always have been.” Carina explains. Travis nods, thanking Carina before they both go back to work.
He has some serious apologies to make.
-
Vic snuggles closer to Maya, enjoying her warmth. Maya has always been so comfortable to cuddle with, and gives the best hugs. Despite how upset she was yesterday, Maya has been making her feel so much better.
“God, these reality tv shows are so lame.” Maya complains. “Yeah, but they make me feel better about my own life.” Vic laughs. Seeing how much of a mess these people are makes her feel like she’s doing pretty okay.
On the screen, a woman slaps her now ex-boyfriend, and Maya whoops. “DESERVED!” She yells. Vic giggles, shaking her head.
“Hey…you know I got you? Always, ok? I’ll always be here.” Maya reassures Vic. Vic nods. “Yeah, yeah. I know.”
-
Later on in the day, Vic hears a knock at the door to Maya and Carina’s apartment. “I’ll get it.” She murmurs to the two, and opens the door to see a guilty looking Travis.
“Hey…I know I’ve been really shitty lately, but can we talk?” He requests. Vic hesitantly nods. Maya and Carina quietly move to their room, giving the duo some space.
Travis takes Vic’s hand as they sit down. “I’m so sorry, Vic. I’ve been such an oblivious idiot that I forgot what’s most important to me. And that’s you.”
Vic feels tears pool in her eyes. “And I’m sorry that Theo has been being such a douche to you lately. It’s not fair, the way he is treating you.” Travis continues.
“Carina mentioned you had a rough call yesterday, and I just wanted to say I’m here. If you need to talk, cry, anything. I’m here.” He promises.
“Thank you, Trav. But you still have a lot of making up to do.” She tells him. Travis hugs her. “I know. Don’t you ever forget that you are my number one, ok? You’ll always be my number one.”
The duo continue to hug for a moment, before Vic pulls back. “I don’t know what to do about Theo. He’s been so busy being captain and has his head so far up his ass he might see god himself.”
Travis chuckles at the end of that sentence. “Look, Theo doesn’t deserve you. If he finds that his job is more important than you? Then let him, and leave him. He will eventually realize what he lost.”
“Thanks, Travis. I needed to hear that.” Vic murmurs. “And take it from someone who is man and attracted to them. They fucking suck sometimes.”
Vic laughs loudly at that. “Trust me, I know. If I could choose I would totally be attracted to women.”
They laugh for another moment before Travis sobers. “How can I start making it up to you?”
Vic grins, throwing her feet on Travis’ lap. “Foot rub!”
Travis rolls his eyes. “Fine. But only because I love you.”
“I love you too, dumbass.”
