I’m a 34 year old, straight, paralegal for a criminal defense attorney. Although I have my life together, and have for the better part of the last decade, I haven’t always made the best decisions in life. Also, I come from a great family, my parents are still married, and I’ve always had a big heart, as well as an inclination to do the right thing. However, my choices and geographical circumstances have led me to make some very questionable decisions in life, as well as associate with some of the shadiest of characters (all behind me now).
As a kid I was verbally and physically abused my alcoholic father. It’s important to note that he has changed his ways, rarely drinks now, and has ditched his abusive ways. We have an amazing father-son relationship now. I grew up watching him beat my mother, my siblings, and of course, myself being on the receiving end of the brunt of the physical abuse. I credit playing his biggest punching bag due to being the oldest male. That all changed when I grew in stature and started rolling with gang members at 14. The abuse to my mom stopped as well. He learned I wouldn’t stand to see my mom beat anymore, and I always challenged him from that point on.
I always wanted to become a police officer and move up to detective. Since a child it was my dream! I always fantasized about living a high class life, like Batman. Balls, tuxedo dinners, waltzes, daily suits, the works. I wanted that lifestyle, I had to have it.
I joined the Air Force as a Military Police, or Security Forces. My traumas followed me and I got into lots of trouble since a kid. Those troubles exacerbated when I got my freedom and a paycheck, living independently in the military at 17. I was free from Him (my father). But the abuse only trickled down to the next sibling in line, and my mother. I felt the guilt of leaving them vulnerable. They didn’t have big brother to stand up to Him. I carried the guilt and drank to wash my sorrows away. At least I thought I did, but they learned how to swim.
I received a positive discharge from the Air Force, even after getting in a lot of trouble. Lots of underage drinking incidents and fights. I was a scrappy little Mexican. The positive discharge came from being an exemplary cop while on duty. I was a leader, naturally. I like to say, I was born to work with law. Others have told me the same.
I’m a year away from finishing my undergrad degree, then it’s straight into law school.
After looking at 14 years max for an ugly fight with my father in law and others, I fired 3 lawyers then represented myself at my own Preliminary Hearing. I had some charges dropped and highlighted many weaknesses in the states case. Then, right when I was sick of fighting against the odds and many lies against me, my now current boss came along and refused to let me take 2 years in prison without first taking a crack at my case. I’m so glad he pissed me off at the time by not letting me take that “deal”. I was home a few weeks after he worked my case. The first lawyer that worked my case. The other 3, well in the famous words of a retired judge, we won’t comment on them. A judge, DA, and others praised my litigation for myself. They even suggested I went to law school and become a lawyer. My 4th and final attorney throughout that horrendous nightmare, took a chance on me and is now my employer/attorney. We work very well together. Very professional as well. The two of us.
It is very important to also note, I in no way deflect blame for my actions. I wasn’t a saint the night of that incident. But I also wasn’t on an even playing field with all the fabricated accusations and lies against me. I was jumped by 3 people while I was unarmed. One had a high powered revolver aimed at my head, one had two knives, while the third beat my head to a wooden post. My biggest mistake was being hooked on steroids and displaying my rage. That is all behind me now and has shaped my future for the better.
Life has been great, but it’s also thrown many curveballs at me. I’ve never given up on life, and now I’m on a great trajectory to living the life I always wanted. The life I was destined to live. I will become an attorney.
A wise DA recently told me “it’s never too late to be whom you could’ve been” and she changed my life forever with those kind words of wisdom.
Follow me on a journey through a past of adventure, emotion, tragedy, and so much more. Also, I will take you into my current life and into my future.

♛- PLAY-HARD I
1st part/ 2nd part (Mature Audience Community Label)
Series Masterlist ⋆⁺₊⋆ ☀︎ ⋆⁺₊⋆
Tumblr media
➳ INTERESTS; - olo’eyktan!jake x fem!omatikayan reader
➳ BACKGROUND; - working alongside Mo’at has helped you and your family in various ways, as a way to repay her for your free working she pairs you along side Toruk Makto to aid him in small departments he needs assistance in, but more importantly to find a Tsahik suitable for the Olo’eyktan, but he isn’t always cooperative.
➳ WARNINGS; - 3.1k wc slight age gap (25 and 21), takes place after the great war, eventual smut, slow burn, sexual tension, use of alcohol, vomiting (mentioned once), wet kisses, hickies, jealousy, power imbalance, pet names, fluff, bit of angst if you squint, nipple!play, slight p!play.
➳a.i; first fic i’m very very nervous, but i hope u all enjoy ^^, i take requests so just hit my inbox 🌸
*na’vi translation will be provided*
Mo’at was not joking when she spoke of Jake Sully and his stubbornness, the reason why she decided you’d be a perfect aid is due to your patience, which was running very thin at the moment.
“I’m here to assist you, but i cannot do my job if you refuse to go against my requests.” you stated sharply, his ears pinned against his hair and his lips tightened into a straight line, he simply crossed his arms. This was the 3rd date you’d set up for him that he’s rejected.
Not the first, or the second, but the third time. To make matters worse whenever you’d complain to Mo’at she’d simply tell you to just push a little farther.
“I told you I didn’t like her” he said sternly, repeating the same statement he has for the past 2 weeks. “skxawng, [moron] you’ve said the same thing for the other 2 na’vi i’ve tried to pair you with, do not be selfish, think of the future of our people-“
“That’s all I think about y/n, I might be many things but selfish isn’t one of’em. You can’t just force someone with me, if im going to be with some girl for the rest of my life at least let me make my own decision.” He quickly cut you off, now unfolding his arms and placing a hand at his side, eyeing you up and down. You’d be lying if you said he didn’t make any good points, if you were in his place you’d be more than frustrated, but regardless you’re job here was to help and provide for the olo’eyktan, which is exactly what you were going to do.
“Mr. Sully, please-“
“Jake. It’s jake kid” He buds in, smiling softly.
“Jake, I understand what you’re saying and how you feel, but part of my job is providing, and what i’m doing is providing for you and your future” You correct yourself, giving him a pleading look, searching in his eyes for a look of understanding, which you soon found. He relaxed a bit and wasn’t as tense as before, nodding in approval. You quickly smiled, thankful this situation didn’t have to escalate to a serious argument like it has before hand. Those times were the worst times for the both of you, and thankfully you’ve both been able to talk them out and set boundaries and learn from past mistakes, if anything Mo’at would repeat how times like those strengthens the relationship you two share, and she wasn’t wrong.
“m’sorry” He said quietly, but loud enough for you to hear, rubbing his hands together and sitting down, his tail curling up beside him with his head down. “syeha si tam [breathe, it’s okay], you have nothing to apologize for, i’m sorry too, the position you’re in isn’t easy, trust me I know” you said calmly, slowly walking over to him, just for him to open up his arms. You slowly walked over to him, quickly embracing him just for him to do the same with you. You sighed and smiled softly, your head resting on his.
Come to think of it Jake was always a physical kind of person, “touchy” is what the term is. Whenever things would go wrong with him or the clan he would drain out quickly, before he didn’t have anyone to rely on, not a friend close enough for him to talk to so he would create a relationship with Mo’at, asking her for advice and methods to aid him, right before he came across you. You would be seated with Mo’at, mixing herbs for her while listening to their conversations, on specific days jake would speak about certain na’vi women attempting to court him, which made you giggle when you first heard it
“Who is she?” Jake asked quickly glancing over at you, as you quickly covered your mouth to stop any other laughter. Mo’at turned to you and back at Jake softly smiling. “Her name is y/n, I love her like a daughter of mine,she’s been under my arm for the past 12 years” She said proudly, Jake nodded his head, not taking his eyes off of you, watching as you walked over and stood beside Mo’at.
“Ohe ahasey sa’nok” [I’ve finished mother] You said, placing the bowl in Mo’at’s hands, smiling at her, she thanked you and introduced you to Jake. “Te suli, this is y/n, y/n this is tsyeyk suli, our olo’ektyan” She stated, directing her hand to you than back to jake. You quickly signed the “I see you” gesture saying “Oel ngati kameie” as he nodded and repeated the same action. You looked him in his eyes, just to realize he was looking at you this whole time, you quickly looked to the side and began to distract yourself.
He had such an intense gaze, does he look at everyone like that? You asked yourself, your tail thrashing back and forth recalling the scene that happened just seconds ago.
“If you need extra assistance I can always have y/n accompany you, she’s always wanted to to explore other fields of work, I think she could help you a lot” Mo’at spoke soothingly, placing the bowl you gave her down and adding bandages to it. Jake continued to watch you, listening to Mo’at’s words carefully, still grinning ear to ear.
“I’d love that” He said, slowly standing up to take his leave.
That was 4 months ago, since then Jake has been very open with you, always in need of a hug and consolidation, which you were happy to give. Although it was painful how often you’d have to remind yourself not to mix pleasure and business, you’re helping you’re olo’ektyan, he’s just worn out and exhausted. Surely tonight would help him, deeming the celebration would be in his favor, celebrating his successful raid with his party and no injuries or casualties were gained.
“I’ll see you tonight?” He asked,slowly releasing you from his grasp and looking up at you, you just looked down at him smiling and nodding softly. “Of course, just don’t expect me to be there early, i’ll be coming with Za’yukto” You said, slowly backing up ready to leave, jake quickly grabbed your hand as soon as you turned around.
“Who is that?” He asked, you turned to face him to see his demeanor quickly changed. His jaw had clenched and his grip on your hand was getting tighter by the second. “Just a friend of mine, he didn’t want to go alone so I volunteered to take him, just for a while” You said harmlessly, he tilted his head, looking at you up and down before responding. He opened his mouth just to slowly close is and take a deep breath, making direct eye contact with you. “Just… just don’t be too late okay? I’ll be waiting for you” He said softly, his ears lowering slightly as he let go of your hand.
“Of course, and if you ever get too bored you can talk to all of your other friends there” You joked, quickly getting your belongings and leaving shortly.
✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿
You glanced in your small reflection for a final time before leaving your small hut. You haven’t done much to your appearance other than brushing out your braids and changing your purple beaded top to a red one, you’ve always liked how the colors looked on you.
This’ll do. You thought, it was too late to turn back and change now, you’ve already gone so far anyway. You looked pleasant, eye-catching, which was the exact look you were hoping for, hopefully you’d get someone to look at you during tonight’s celebration, or maybe a specific someone. Of course that specific someone being non other than J-
“Y/N!! Are you here?” You stopped dead in your tracks quickly walking over to the entrance of your hut.
That’s Za’yukto’s voice. “Hi, sorry, ohe am lonu to sìltsan” [I’m ready to go] You stated, stepping outside and quickly setting down the entrance of your hut with a smile, looking up at him. He smiled in response and complimented you, to which you thanked him and began making your way to the spirit tree for the celebration.
Soon after you two arrived, you quickly began to adjust your top, brush off your loincloth and hair, saying your goodbyes to Za’yu as you made your way to look for Jake, thankfully finding him quickly-
He’s with someone, you thought, seeing him off to the side laughing with a large drink in his hand, obviously being alcohol, of course stronger than any human substances and yet tasting even sweeter than anything you’ve ever had before. Seeing him happy like that did nothing more than make you smile a bit, he’s been stressed lately, he needs some sort of release. You quickly walk to the side getting closer to him just to see he’s doing more than just talking.
More than just laughing, and not with any someone, with a woman.
And he’s…. he’s kissing her? They’re kissing, they’re definitely kissing, and he’s not kissing just any woman, it’s the first na’vi you ever brought towards him to consider that he immediately rejected, simply telling you “There’s nothing special about her”.
Ewya.
You didn’t even bother making your way over to him, you’d already seen enough, feeling your face heat up out of sheer embarrassment and your eyes beginning to burn. On one swift motion you turn around to find Za’yu and to your surprise he already had a large cup waiting for you. You quickly grabbed it and chugged it down, your face immediately going from a sour look to more relaxed.
“Syeha si y/n!!” [Breathe y/n!!] Za’yu said, quickly taking the now empty cup from your hands as you just smiled at him. “I’m fine, come dance with me?” you asked, holding his hand. He just shook his head and placed the cups down on a table beside him, quickly taking you to the center of the dancefloor and began dancing with you in his arms.
This is a party, a place to let loose and celebrate, and that’s exactly what you planned on doing. You hooked your arms around Za’yu’s shoulders, pulling him a little closer, and looking at him intensely. You’d be lying if you said Za’yu wasn’t attractive, he was insanely attractive and overall perfect, everything a woman would look for in a man, he was skilled, intelligent, good looking, and strong? A complete package. Especially with the fact he’s such a gentleman, that’s what triggered your friendship so quickly.
He looked down at you, his hands traveling from your back to your waist, grinning at you. You slowly pushed yourself up against his body, feeling your beaded top clink against his broad chest. You slowly climb up on your tippy toes closer and closer to his face, as he too moves in closer, just for you to reach towards his ear and kiss it.
“Can you get me another drink please? I’m so thirsty” You ask him playfully, rubbing your 4 fingers against your throat slowly, licking your lips at him. He nodded and reached down to your collarbone, kissing it softly before leaving to get you a drink.
Soon after dancing by yourself you feel a hand rest on your stomach and trail down to your pelvis, holding you securely as your back rests on his back, you lift your head up quickly to see Za’yu, with your drink in his hand as he smiled down at you. You slowly got onto your tippy toes and kissed him, just to taste residue of alcohol that he previously consumed, smiling at the sweet taste, and taking the cup from his hands and quickly finishing it, dropping the cup and turning to face him, kissing him again.
Honestly at this state you’re wondering where jake was, if he was enjoying himself with his dick probably down that girls throat, but at the same time you were too fucked out and having way too much fun to care. Your shared kisses with Za’yu quickly became more intimate and more active, exchanging saliva and practically moaning into his mouth while still dancing, now slowly beginning to grind yourself onto him.
“Za’yu-“ You moaned softly against his lips, barely being able to catch your breath. “I know tìyawn, I know, mawepey” [I know love, I know, be patient] He said softly, his kisses trailing from your lips to your jawline and down to your neck, beginning to suck on you softly.
You rested your hand on the back of his neck, slowly playing with his hair and mewling softly, your ears perked up and your tail curling around your leg. He continued however, lowering down to your collarbone, kissing it softly before continuing his assault.
“ ‘Yu, can w- can we go back to my place? Please” You whimper softly, as he slowly moves his head up to look at you, kissing you softly. “Whatever you want y/n”. He said, quickly going to hold your hand, just as you turn around someone crashes into you spilling their drink all over you.
Of course it was none other than Ninat, whos throat Jake was previously shoving his tongue down. “Shouldn’t you be all on the olo’ektyan?” You muttered quietly, thankful no one heard you. Before listening to her pleads and apologies you simply just shoved past her, clinging onto Za’yukto tightly. “Don’t worry we’ll get you cleaned up, come on” He said.
Soon enough you both arrived to your hut , walking straight into the back of your hut and dragging him along, to which he quickly obliged. You stepped into the small pond behind your hut and began removing your strained top and loincloth, ushering him to do the same, which he quickly did.
“I’m going to clean you up first” He said, smiling down at you and grabbing a nearby rag to wipe any access alcohol off of you. He was gentle and caring, he only looked above your collarbone and refused to look lower, to make sure ‘you felt comfortable’ was his excuse, you found his caring and respectful nature cute though, knowing there were a lot of navi men out there who would not do the same. You just helped guide his hand to where he had to clean off until he kissed you again, letting his hands trail up from your waist to your soft breasts.
“Is this okay?” He asked softly, looking in your eyes for complete confirmation, to which you nodded and smiled in response. He let his fingers graze against your nipples a few times before toying with you, lowering his head before taking your left breast into his mouth, rolling his tongue onto your nipple, making you moan softly, quickly gripping onto the back of his hair softly. “That’s not the only place that needs attention, i’m still dirty elsewhere” You teased, he looked up at you repositioning himself, giving you a cocky look before answering.
“Oh yeah? Where would that be?” He asked, you quickly took his hand to show him, hovering over your stomach, but before you could continue a wave of sickness hit you, making you pause. Za’yu quickly took notice of this and how your expression changed. “Hey, what’s wrong what happened” He asked, now completely serious as you now grabbed onto his shoulder for support. “I feel a little sick” You managed to make out weakly, he quickly finished cleaning you off and immediately got you out of the small pond, drying you up and taking you inside to get you into something, but not before you threw up on the side of the mossy ground twice before crying.
“It hurts” You said, your voice hoarse and dry, which reminded Za’yukto to get you some water, he instructed for you to stay in your room and get dressed as he fetched you something to drink along with a small herb to help with the burning of your throat.
You quickly got changed, sitting patiently for Za’yu, and he soon came telling you to swallow one of your own handmade herbal medicine and a glass of water behind it, which you did. “You need to get some rest, you’ve had a long night” He said, placing his hand onto your shoulder, rubbing it softly and smiling at you. You didn’t respond, only placing the glass down and sprawling yourself against your bed, your back now facing Za’yu.
A moment of silence has passed, he hasn’t left and you haven’t fallen asleep yet, why is he still-
“I’ll stop by tomorrow to check up on you” He quickly stated, interrupting your thoughts, you don’t answer and he takes the silence as a sign you must be asleep, big mistake.
“Hopefully tonight didn’t change anything within our friendship, i’m not looking for a mate or to court anyone now, it was never my intention to move so quickly with you” He mumbled, but loud enough for you to hear, and shift in the bed as a response, you waited to hear the flap of your hut close before letting the tears in your eyes roll out over your nose and stain your bed.
This was going to be such a long night, and tomorrow morning even longer.

stupid fucking kid
part 2 of “stupid horny fucks”
chris sturniolo x reader .
angst .
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
warnings : language , talk of sex . angst . depictions of depressive episodes. regret .
not proof read cuz i don’t have time for that. 😀
———
it’s been a week . seven days of avoiding conversations with him , seven days of “oh sorry i’m busy” messages to nick when he asks to come over . i cant even think straight .
one week ago .
“he flops down next to me , his chest heaving and loose curls wet slightly around his neck with sweat .
“what the fuck just happened” i say looking over to him
he just stares at the ceiling .
what the fuck just happened .
“i’m gonna go-“ i try to continue but the sight of chris’s eyes closed and soft hums of sleep stop me .
my mind races with scenarios and past conversations. he doesn’t want a relationship. i don’t even know if i do . i just fucked my best-friend. how the fuck did that even happen . the same kid that i see allmost everyday , i’ve known him for years , what the fuck have i just done .
“chris i’m gonna go .” i whisper to his sleeping body , while getting out of bed and grabbing the sweatpants and tank top from the floor , and leaving the room . as i walk downstairs my vision gets blurry as regret and guilt sets in . i can hear nick and matt ask questions but before i know it i’m in my car and speeding home .
what the fuck just happened.
now.
the ceiling seems to move as i stare into the white space, shadows curve and shift with stars before i blink them away and look towards the notification lighting up my dark room . i notice the time . 2.36 , jesus . not bothering to read the notification i silence my phone and turn over in my sheets . the cold kisses my face as my cheeks slide over my pillow , fingers numb at the temperature as i place them both under the cover and curl the duvet up to my neck . closing my eyes allows the thoughts to run wild , my estranged relationship with the triplets , the fact i haven’t left my house in days , my plants are wilted as i’ve neglected them. chris .
i open my eyes and see the mascara stained bedding from last night . grey droplets seeping into the fabric left marks . a physical reminder for everyone to see . well. that’s if anyone bothered to check on me . it’s not their fault , the moment matt called me to check if i was ok i changed the subject, called him stupid and laughed , deciding to let him talk instead of me . it worked the first two days , then the missed meetings rang alarm bells for nick , he showed up at my house , ringing the doorbell to which i ignored . i shouldn’t have done that . the thoughts that were once plaguing my head were cut off as i hear a car pull into my driveway . the sound of my dogs nails tapping into the wooden floor confirms it , she knows the sound of matt’s car .
as i reach the door i take a breath before opening it , gripping the handle for stability , nuckles whitening at the force . i’m met with shy blue eyes and stubble , his hair flowing around his hat and vivien westwood necklace swaying on his chest .
“hi”
his voice is hourse , it allmost sounds deeper, my lips twitch at his nervous tone but it never quite meets a smile as i know why he’s here . “hi chris.” my eyes focus on the car and i notice matt behind the wheel looking angry , probably at being dragged out the house , but his eyes soften when he meets my gaze . i shift out the way for chris to enter the house , it’s only now i realise the state im in and cover my body with my arms .
i close the door behind him and turn to look at him sheepishly. he looks nervous, his hands are in his pockets and he won’t meet my eye contact . i’m not sure if it’s embarrassment or anxiety but whatever it is , it’s not chris .
“look y/n i’m-“
“does matt know?” i cut him off unintentionally, something changes in his features. this is something he can answer . an easy thing to talk about . “no , i figured it’s up to you to tell him.” he answers confidently, like he’s doing me some fucking favour . quickly the pain turns into anger , and i feel adrenaline fill my chest , as much as i wish it was a different feeling i’m happy to feel something.
“what the fuck does that mean? u give me the job to tell him ? what are u too embarrassed to tell him?” i snap at him . i subconsciously curse myself , knowing this is not what i wanted to say . but this is easier then watching him walk away all together. this he’s good at , this he knows how to do . argue .
“what ? no of course not? y/n i just-“
“you just what ? too embarrassed to say we fucked and u ghosted me ?”
“ghosted you ? i didn’t fucking ghost you , you just left ? u literally fucked then dipped ? what am i supposed to do tell him hm?” he raises his voice , his calm demeanour slowly melting away . he takes a step towards me and i take a step back , my back hitting the radiator attached to wall and i wince at the pain . he notices and takes a step back again , taking a shakey breath in and bites the inside of his lip . “look y/n , im sorry okay ? i don’t know what i did or how to fix it but i’m sorry . i thought u wanted it as much as me but i’m sorry if you-“
“no chris i did, i thought i did , but i just don’t think it should have happened, i feel wierd . i cant believe i fucked you literally minutes after u meant to send a dick pic to another girl” i calm myself down now , matching his energy, my neighbors did not want to hear two teenagers shout about dickpics at 2 in the morning . “ i feel disgusting , u took my fucking virginity and-“
“what” he cuts me off confused , looking away in thought i watch as his shoulders relax and eyes glaze over for a second . “i’m so sorry i didn’t even know , i didn’t think , that picture was stupid , it was a mistake in itself i don’t even know that girl . she just looked like you so-“
what .
———
yikes y/n seriously needs some therapy

Too Sweet (Ch 3)
Harvey x Reader
Ch 1 ~ Ch 2
Summary: picking up off last chapters cliffhanger and diving straight into Harvey’s 4 heart event. You resolve the conflict after the incident with George, Harvey gives you a checkup, and you two share a jar of pickles in his apartment. 💘🥒
Authors note: I know nothing about the Air Force I’m so sorry. It’s just for the plot and vibes. He needed a backstory!!
Word count: 1.7k! A longer chapter as a treat
Tumblr media
“Harvey! Oh my god why are you here? Wait, no, I don’t mean it like that” the surprise visit from the doctor had you stumbling over your words. “You scared me. And I don’t actually think your mustache is stupid. I just… I was really embarrassed about what happened earlier.”
“I actually stopped by to thank you for backing me up earlier. George can be stubborn, so I’m glad you got him to listen to you.” The doctor averted eye contact and stuffed his hands in his pockets. “Do you mind if I join you?”
“Oh uhhh, sure. How much of what I said did you hear by the way?” You hoped silently that he hadn’t heard you call him cute, especially since you’d been talking to a chicken.Harvey slid down and sat next to you on the floor of the coop.
“Just the part where you insulted my mustache,” he replied, stroking his own facial hair. “The farm is coming along nicely. You must be very dedicated to make such a turn around in such a short time.”
Oh thank Yoba you thought to yourself. “Thank you. I guess I’m trying to make up for lost time; I want to honor Grandpa’s memory because he loved this farm and the community. I used to spend a couple weeks here in the summer when I was growing up. I haven’t been back to the valley since I was a teenager. I didn’t think Lewis would recognize me when I came back.” You laughed quietly, an image of you as a gawky adolescent with braces coming back to you
“About earlier, we can put that behind us if you’d like. I didn’t mean to be short with you either. I was startled so I apologize for being curt.” Harvey looked at you with a kind expression before rising from the floor. “I’d like for us to be on good terms going forward.” He extended his hand and helped you up.
———————————————————————————
The bell on the door chimed as you walked in and Harvey’s head poked up from his paperwork. “Hey! Just the person I wanted to see today actually.”
“Oh?”
“I was about to write you a letter recommending that you schedule your annual checkup. If you don’t mind, I’ve got time today actually for a cursory exam.” Truthfully you weren’t very fond of hospitals, or doctor’s appointments. But you were also a terrible liar and had no time to think of an excuse. Better just to get it over with, you supposed.
“I can make it work.” You set the jar of pickles aside temporarily and followed Harvey to an exam room. You sat down on the paper, uncomfortable with the sudden formal shift in your dynamic. You’d gone from friend to patient in a matter of minutes. Harvey placed his stethoscope just under the collar of your shirt and you flinched at the touch of the cold metal.
“Sorry it’s chilly,” Harvey said. “Your heart rate is a little high. Do hospitals make you nervous?” He asked with a slight furrow in his brow.
“A little bit” you admitted. It certainly didn’t help that this was the most physical contact the two of you had shared since you met. He placed his hand on your shoulder and your eyes met. You felt your palms start sweating.
“Take a deep breath for me please” you did as instructed and tried to focus on anything else but the feeling of his hand on you. “Your lungs sound strong.” Harvey was in his element as he checked off the boxes of a routine checkup. He tested your reflexes, examined your ears and eyes, writing down his observations on his clipboard. “So far you seem to be in good health. I just have a few more questions about your lifestyle”
“Ask away, Doc.” Harvey seemed slightly flustered at the nickname but made a quick recovery. He pushed his glasses back up his nose and stood up straighter, clearing his throat
“As I was saying. Working on the farm involves a fair amount of physical labor I assume, so I’m sure you get enough exercise. What do you usually eat in a day?”
“Oh I usually just eat the foragables I find around the valley. There’s a lot of leeks and wild onions out now. I saw a weird looking berry the other day and I ate a couple of those. Sometimes I eat eggs from the chickens, or buy something from Gus for dinner.” Harvey was visibly stressed as he absorbed the information you gave him.
“I would highly advise that you eat a more balanced diet. Foraging is fine as a snack but it won’t provide enough energy for your activity levels. Eggs are good, but I’d implore you to try and eat from all the food groups”
“So this probably isn’t a great time to say I also eat the algae I find in the mines?” You’d never seen the poor doctor so stressed; you imagined most of his patients weren’t quite as odd as you.
“Let’s move on. How much sleep do you get at night?”
“6ish, sometimes less, sometimes more”
“Well, 8 hours a night is recommended but 6 isn’t terrible I suppose. But I’d encourage you to try and find a healthier routine. Farming is labor intensive and if you don’t give your body the care it needs you won’t be able to keep up sooner or later.” He had a look of genuine worry in his eyes and it pulled at your heartstrings. You’d only known each other for several months, but you sensed the beginning of a deep connection.
“I’ll try to be better,” you replied softly. You weren’t used to being chastised, but you understood he meant well.
“Thank you. You’re free to go and have an official clean bill of health from me”
“Well I stopped by to ask a favor actually”
“Oh?”
“I was wondering if you’d do me the honors of being the very first taste tester of my first batch of farm fresh pickles” you grinned and gestured toward the door “I left them on the counter.” Harvey smiled back and held the door open for you.
“I’d be honored. I’m actually about to close up for the day, would you like to come upstairs?”
The two of you headed upstairs to the small apartment above the clinic. Furniture was sparse and well loved, and there was a small kitchenette off the main room. The back wall held a large bookshelf that boasted an assortment of books and some small trinkets. Another shelf was lined carefully with model planes. There was a radio station in the corner by the window. “It’s not much, but it’s home,” Harvey said sheepishly.
“It’s great” you replied, eyes scanning the room with eagerness. You were itching to learn more about him. You took a seat on his small sofa, your heart nearly skipping a beat when he sat next to you, his knee inches away from yours. “You can have the first one” you offered, extending the open pickle jar toward Harvey.
“Don’t mind if I do.” Harvey reached in and plucked out a particularly large pickle before biting into it. His eyes lit up as he tasted it. “This is delicious! You’ve really never made pickles before?” You shook your head. “Well you certainly have a knack for it.” You grabbed a pickle for yourself and were pleasantly surprised at how good they were. You were glad he wasn’t lying to spare your feelings.
“What’s with the planes?” You saw Harvey get a far off look on his face while he thought about his response
“I’ve always been fascinated by aviation. I did a stint in the Air Force years ago. I wanted to become a pilot but it didn’t pan out. It ended up paying for my med school tuition though. The model planes are something I like to do in my free time. I find them relaxing, and they remind me of my time in service.”
“I would have never guessed that. Pilots and doctors are pretty different. What led you down this path?”
“I think I’ve always had an affinity for helping people. I joined the Air Force to serve my country; this feels like a way to serve the community in a different way.”
“That’s actually really selfless.” You toyed with images of Harvey in uniform as you reached for another pickle, not realizing that Harvey had the same idea. Your hands met in the rim of the jar and you flinched back instinctively. The small touch left you wanting more. You adjusted your legs slightly, tentatively letting one fall against his. Harvey made no effort to break contact.
“Tell me more about yourself. You said you explore the mines. Are there really monsters in there?”
“There are! I haven’t made it down very far but there’s all kinds of creatures down there.” You animatedly described the things you’d encountered on your adventures: colorful slimes, stealthy rock crabs, large buzzing insects, agile bats and more. Harvey looked on with a mixture of awe and fear.
His voice grew soft as he spoke “please be careful in the mines. I’d hate to see you get hurt.” Suddenly it was as if a switch had gone off in his mind and he got up from the couch. “Wait here one second!” He bolted across the studio and down the stairs. You heard rummaging from below before Harvey emerged again holding an armful of various medicines and first aid supplies. “Take these.” He thrusted the bundle of supplies into your arms.
“Harvey I can’t just take these from you. These are expensive” you insisted, trying to hand them back to him. A roll of gauze unraveled on the floor. Harvey plucked it from the ground and placed it on a table.
“Nonsense. Consider it part of your checkup.” He looked you in the eyes with a pleading expression. “Please take them. And promise me you’ll keep them with you in the mines”
“I promise.”

Melting the Dragon King’s Heart (Part 2)
Fandom: Twisted Wonderland Malleus Draconia/F!Reader Summary: After falling down some stairs, you wake up in the body of a villain from one of Idia's cheesy romance books. Destined to die a fiery death, you have to figure out a way to change your fate. Word Count: 8,000 Notes: I decided to split this part into two. The original is about 11k words and counting. This way I can work on the final part but also provide everyone with something. Reader uses she/her pronouns Warnings: Physical abuse, emotional abuse
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
After revising the proposal and sending along the messengers, you spent a lot of time filling out paperwork. Malleus seemed to trust you to do more, so you found yourself given more work. Though you’re glad he trusts you more, you hate all the new work.
Because of all the work, you’re unable to do much besides hole up in the office. Thankfully Diablo is always there to bring snacks and remind you of the time. You often get lost in the paperwork and forget to do the basic necessities such as eating dinner. Malleus is always happy to answer any questions you have, and having his office across the way is very handy.
It’s a few weeks later that you notice the castle is abuzz with more activity than usual. You can hear everyone rushing back and forth while signing off on a few things. You can see staff rush by with vases, flowers and linen.
“Diablo, what’s going on?” you ask the butler, who places a new cup of tea down.
“The palace is preparing for his highness’s birthday,” he informs you. “It is a national holiday so Briar Valley throws a party for the citizens. There’s also a ball that is hosted in his honor where we invite the surrounding kingdoms. This year's theme is a masquerade.”
You had completely forgotten about his birthday. Setting aside your work, you lean forward on your elbow while strumming your fingers on the desk. “What should I get him as a gift?” you muse aloud.
Glancing over at the butler, he pretends to stare straight ahead. After a moment, he sighs before shaking his head. “I apologize, your highness, but I do not think I should tell you what to get his highness.”
“But I don’t really know what he likes…” That’s not completely true, but it would be nice to get something that you know Malleus will like.
“My advice is that as long as the gift has your thoughts and feelings, his majesty will like it.” Diablo bows slightly before leaving.
Letting out a deep sigh, you jot down a list of things you know Malleus likes and dislikes. From your previous conversations, you do know some things. He likes gargoyles, abandoned places, and cold treats. He dislikes whole cakes and gargoyles that serve no function.
“What to get him…” A maid gently raps on the door, disrupting your thoughts.
“I apologize for disturbing your highness, but a letter just arrived.” She hands you the cream colored envelope with a rose wax seal.
Once she leaves, you open the rather thick letter. Reading through it, your eyes slowly widen with each word. Excitement and trepidation fill every fiber in your body. Leaving your study, you make the very quick trip to Malleus’s office next door. Your sudden intrusion startles him from the paper he’s reading.
“He responded!” you exclaim, slapping the letter down on the desk.
He quizzically looks at you before taking the letter. You watch as he quickly scans the contents. “Riddle Rosehearts wants to meet about our proposal,” you explain. “It’s a good sign, right?”
He sets the letter down and nods. “It would seem he wants to iron out the details. I’m surprised he responded so quickly, since I’ve heard he’s the type not to make decisions without careful consideration.” He ponders, “Perhaps he’s been wanting to establish relations with us and this gives him a good excuse.”
“Right! So, when do you want to go?”
“You wish to do this soon?” he asks.
Nodding, you explain, “I think it would be ideal to do this sooner rather than later.”
“Hmm… I have a few meetings to attend with some diplomats from other countries. And then there’s the banquet…” He shifts through a notebook containing his day-to-day schedule. “Maybe we could go… no that won’t work.”
After a while of going through his schedule, he sighs deeply. Brows furrowing, a small frown appears on his lips. “It seems I will be busy for a few months. We may not be able to do this as quickly.”
There’s a pause before you throw out a suggestion. “What if I go and meet with him?”
“Alone?” His frown deepens.
“Yes. I believe I can work on this with him. We won’t sign anything, but it will at least iron out the details.” You want to do this. It’s something you worked on for a while, so it would be nice to be the one to close the deal. And you can’t say you’re not curious to see what the Queendom of Roses is like.
“I know you might be worried about my abilities, but I would like the opportunity to prove myself beyond paperwork and readings.”
Malleus regards you quietly. The frown has left his face but his brows are still creased. “I do not doubt your abilities. I just worry about you being in another country alone.”
A small laugh escapes your lips. His concern for your safety is endearing. “I can bring a guard or two with me, if that will ease your worries,” you quickly add.
That seems to alleviate some of his worry. “Yes, I think that will be fine. When would you like to leave?”
Taking the letter, you fold it back into the envelope. “His highness said he could meet starting next week. How about a week from now? It should give me enough time to send a response back and prepare for the trip.”
“So soon…” he mutters. Letting out a huff, he waves off whatever is concerning him “I will instruct Silver and Sebek to accompany you. Diablo will help you prepare everything else.”
You’re surprised he’s having his two closest knights go with you. “Are you sure? I could take someone else.”
He shakes his head. “These two are one of my most trusted knights, so it would be appropriate that they guard you on your journey.”
Seeing the firm set of his lips, you know not to argue. “Thank you. I will gather some material and start packing.”
Turning to leave, Malleus calls to you. “How are your parents doing?” he asks suddenly.
You halt, almost stumbling in your steps, before slowly turning toward him. “They’re fine. Why do you ask?”
“I was thinking we can send them an invitation for my birthday ball,” he explains. You can’t read his expression.
Every fiber in your being wants to scream ‘no’ and that you never want to see them. But you know you can’t. You have to keep up appearances for now. “If that’s what you would like, then please invite them,” you respond as calmly as you can.
He’s quiet as he studies you before nodding. “If there is anyone else you want to invite, please let Diablo know. The invitations will go out in about three weeks.” He returns to his papers.
You suddenly have an idea. “Is there anything you want for your birthday?” you inquire, walking over to stand in front of his desk.
“Nothing in particular,” he says, not looking up.
“Really? Nothing at all?” You’re hoping he’d give you some ideas. Buying birthday gifts for Idia was easy since he usually wanted something related to his games or anime.
Malleus finally looks up from his papers. “I’m sure whatever you decide, I will like.”
You resist the urge to groan. “Diablo said something similar, you know…” Placing both hands on his desk, you give him a stern look. “If I give you something you hate, let me know right away. Okay?”
He blinks twice. “I doubt you’d ever give me something I’d hate.” He pauses when he sees the slight turn of your lips. “...but I will let you know if that happens.”
“Great!” Turning on your heel, you leave his office. You miss the smile on his lips as he watches you go with a fond look.
---
The trip to the Queendom of Roses is an uneventful ride. Silver and Sebek do accompany you on horseback. Neither say much so you’re left going over things in your head. You’re not sure how this will go, but can only hope you don’t start a war.
The Queendom is lush and green with picturesque homes. Everything reminds you somewhat of images from the Victorian era. When you arrive at the castle, you’re greeted by the queen’s personal advisor, Trey Clover.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, your highness,” he greets with a deep bow.
Taking his offered hand, you step out of the carriage. “Thank you for having me, Mr. Clover.”
“Please call me Trey. If you’ll follow me, his majesty has prepared some tea.” Silver and Sebek follow a few paces behind as you’re led through the rose garden. Some of the roses, you notice, are white while others are red. And some of the red roses almost look to be dripping in paint.
When you arrive at the heart of the garden maze, you are greeted by the queen himself, Riddle Rosehearts. He’s dressed impeccably, though you wouldn’t expect less from someone who follows rules strictly. Though much shorter than Trey, there’s something about his presence that seems to tower over everyone.
He greets you with a bow. “It’s nice to meet you in person.” He’s polite but firm.
“Thank you for having me.” As you dip into a bow, you can’t help but marvel at his composure. For someone who’s around your age, he carries himself as if he’s much older and wiser.
“Trey, please place her highness across from me,” he orders. Silver and Sebek melt somewhere into the background without a word.
As you take the offered seat, you give him a tentative smile. “You can call me by my name. I’d like to think we’ll be good friends soon.”
He seems to sputter a bit before finding himself. “If you insist. Please just call me Riddle, then.”
As tea is served, you engage in small talk. Though you’re eager to get on to the topic of the proposal, etiquette dictates you share pleasantries. It would be considered rude since the tea and treats were specially prepared. The strawberry tarts are delicious so you don’t really mind.
After enjoying the tea, Riddle wastes no time getting onto the business. “Your proposal is indeed interesting to us, however, I want to ask you something.”
“Go ahead.”
He leans forward, hands propped under his chin. “What would you do if we said no?”
There’s a pause. You hadn’t actually considered they would reject your proposal. After a moment, you carefully choose your words. “I would respect your decision. Ultimately, you do not need to accept the proposal. We are not the type of country to force our will on to another. Though, I do think it would be foolish not to take the deal.”
He gestures for you to explain. “Though the Queendom is rich in crops, you do lack magical resources. As you’re aware, Briar Valley is old and has many deposits of magic, which have been refined into its purest form. I’m sure trading between us would help increase the Queendom’s magical might.”
Riddle leans back as he mulls over your words. Your heart beats rapidly in your chest, wondering what is going through his head. After a few moments, he smiles. “Let us draft up an official agreement, then.”
“You accept?” you ask, a bit surprised considering how serious he had been looking. He almost looked like he was about to reject the offer.
“Yes. I’ve always thought it would be good to become allies with our neighboring countries,” he explains. “I realize we haven’t really interacted in the past, but I hope this will be the start to a good relationship between our kingdoms.”
Relief washes over you. “I agree. I think this will be beneficial to both of us in the long run.” There’s a loud commotion that causes you both to turn and look around. “Is…is everything okay?”
Riddle frowns. “There shouldn’t be any problems… Trey?” The green haired man from before does not appear, which causes Riddle’s frown to deepen.
Then, there’s a loud shout. “Get back here!”
A gray blur bursts through the bushes and makes a beeline toward you and Riddle. A redhead and a brunette follow suit, both looking disheveled. “You can’t be here, Grim!” the brunette shouts.
The gray blur stops short and you realize it’s a cat. A strange cat that can stand on two feet with blue flames coming from its ears. You can’t help but stare as you realize who this cat is. And just as you thought, another person comes through the maze, out of breath. Yūki, the protagonist of ‘Melting the Dragon King’s heart’ and the one who saves Malleus, stands before you.
“Grim! Trey said he’d feed you some tarts later!” Yūki shouts.
“Mrrrawh! I want a tart now!” Grim howls.
Riddle stands up, his chair falling to the ground. His face is bright red. “What do you think you’re doing! We have an important guest and you make a spectacle!”
“Uhh… uh oh!” The cat slinks back at the sudden anger rolling off in waves from Riddle.
The redhead manages to grab Grim by the scruff of his neck. “Gotcha!”
Trey steps in along with Silver and Sebek. “I apologize, Riddle. We weren’t able to catch him.”
You, however, can’t take your eyes off the protagonist. In the books Yūki is a magicless human in a world filled with magic. However, that never stops them from traveling to different places and having adventures with their friend, Grim. It’s during one of their trips that they happen to meet Malleus, and everything else falls into place.
You never thought much about where Yūki’s last adventure was before coming to Briar Valley since the story glossed over everything. But to see them before the start of the novel is strange, yet you’re curious.
Feeling your gaze, Yūki turns to you. Their eyes are bright and filled with wonder. “Hello, your highness.” They bow. “I apologize for interrupting your meeting.” They ignore the others who are still squabbling. Riddle doesn’t look ready to calm down any time soon either.
“It’s nice to meet you…?”
“Yūki! And that,” they point to the cat who’s munching on leftovers, “is Grim. We’re adventures.”
Though you’ve only spoken a few words, you can feel their warmth and sincerity. No wonder they’re able to break the magic on Malleus so easily. They’re like an early spring day coming to thaw the remaining coldness from winter. Ironic, you think.
“An adventure? Where else have you traveled?” you asked, genuinely curious.
“Well, we just came back from visiting the Island of Woe. But we’ve also seen the Shaftlands, Scalding Sands, Coral Sea, and the Sunset Savanna.” They tick off each location on their fingers.
From your memories, you’ve never been anywhere besides your home and then to Briar Valley. The Queendom of Roses is the first place you’ve ever visited. “That’s a lot of places! You must have a lot of fun.”
Yūki chuckles, rubbing the back of their neck. “Yeah… we always manage to get into some kind of trouble, so it’s not that great. I’ve heard Briar Valley is a nice, quaint place…”
“Yes, it’s quiet but the people there are wonderful. You should come visit someday.” The offer is genuine.
They smile, making their face light up. “We definitely will. I think right now Grim and I are going to rest a bit more here.”
“Is the food good there?” Grim suddenly butts in. There are crumbs all over his mouth, which Yūki begins wiping off with a napkin.
You nod thoughtfully. “I would say so. If you come to visit the castle, I’ll make sure to have our chefs whip up a wonderful meal.” You haven’t had much complaint about the food. Though there are some comfort meals you miss from home.
“Sweet! Let’s go there next, Yūki!” The cat’s eyes light up at the prospect.
They groan while crossing their arms. “I still need time to rest from our last adventure. Anyways, Riddle said we could stay as long as we wanted, which means you’ll have access to unlimited tarts.”
Grim huffs but doesn’t seem too bothered. “I guess you’re right…”
Riddle, having calmed down, sits back in his seat. “I do apologize for the abrupt intrusion from my knights.”
The two who had been trying to catch grim, kneel. “We apologize for intruding, your majesty,” they both say in unison
Trey shakes his head. “Honestly… this is Ace and Deuce. They’re newly appointed knights, so they’re still rough around the edges.”
“I don’t mind. You’re knights are a lively bunch.” The two have the decency to look embarrassed.
“A bit too lively,” Riddle mutters. Letting out a sigh, he gestures to Yūki and Grim. “These two are esteemed guests.”
“That’s right! Me and my henchhuman are super important!” Grim boasts, crossing his short arms while puffing out his chest.
Yūki glances at you with an apology in their eyes. “Don’t go getting a big head, Grim,” they warn jokingly.
“Too late! His head is already huge,” Ace teases.
“My head’s normal sized!”
You hear Riddle sigh once more as he rubs his temples. It seems any talk about the proposal is over, but you don’t mind. With how lively everyone else is, things are bound to never be boring.
Your gaze once more turns to Yūki. They’re different from what you expect. Seeing them laugh without a care in the world reminds you about something in the book. In the story, Yūki does lament the fact that they won’t be able to travel anymore once they marry Malleus. They put their adventures on hold. You don’t remember the story ever saying that Yūki laughed in such a carefree way.
Meeting your intense stare, they regard you curiously. “Is there something wrong, your highness?”
You wave them off. “No. It just seems like you’re really close with everyone here…”
They nod eagerly. “The thing about adventuring is that you meet people from different backgrounds and walks of life. I enjoy adventuring for that very reason. I guess I can’t imagine staying in one place for too long when there’s places I still haven’t seen.”
“So, would you want to adventure your whole life?”
“Yes, that’s the goal!” Their grin is infectious.
As Deuce and Ace draw their attention away, you find yourself thinking. Seeing an enthusiastic Yūki and Grim compared to the more subdued versions in the story is so jarring. It’s almost like once the events of the story happen, all of Yūki’s personal dreams and goals get pushed to the back.
By now you’ve accepted your life as the queen. And perhaps with you here, the story has changed. Perhaps you don’t have to follow the story in order to live. A very selfish part of you doesn’t want to leave Briar Valley like you had originally planned. And maybe that’s okay.
As you watch the two adventures talk animatedly, you make a decision. You’ll figure out how to stop your parents your own way.
---
Returning to Briar Valley after a few days away, something has changed. It seems like Malleus has started following you around more. The moment you stepped out of the carriage, Malleus was there to greet you, which you thought was sweet. However, he’s started coming into your office for nothing in particular. He’ll sit in one of your chairs pretending to read whatever papers or book he’s brought with him. You can often feel him hovering, gaze following your every move. It’s like he’s watching and waiting for something to happen.
It’s much like how your parents were always watching you, and if they couldn’t monitor you, they had one of the maids do it. Like a bug under the microscope, you never had peace to yourself until you slept. By then, you were too tired to do anything more than just sleep.
It’s starting to get on your nerves. When you ask him what he wants, he simply says he doesn’t want anything. But you can tell he wants something! But he won’t tell you!
SNAP!
You blink as you stare down at the now broken pen in your hands. Black ink oozes out and drips onto the paper you were working on. Malleus immediately perks up from his spot across from your desk.
“Is everything alright?”
Letting out a long breath through your nose, you summon some magic to clean up the mess on your hand. The broken pen is tossed in the trash. “I’m fine,” you mutter, not looking up.
There’s a pause though you can feel him staring once more. Finding your spare pen, you crumble up the ruined papers. “It seems you’re upset,” he muses. “Is there anything I can do for you?”
“No,” you reply curtly.
Perhaps your tone is a bit too icy because when you look up, you can see the hurt in his gaze. Sighing, you lean forward and cover your face. “I… I didn’t mean to be snappy with you, Malleus. …Why are you hovering so much?”
There’s silence before he answers, “I missed you. Lilia said that if I missed you, I should spend more time with you.”
Looking up once more, you’re not sure what to say. You let out a dry chuckle. “I see… If you want to spend time together, just let me know. I don’t mind spending time together, I just don’t like you hovering.”
“I didn’t realize. I’m sorry,” he apologizes sincerely.
“I’m sorry too for not communicating with you better about this.” You sit back, body suddenly feeling tired. “I’ve spent a lot of my life being watched, and it wasn’t pleasant. I want to spend more time with you, but not like this.”
You glance at him tiredly. There’s a harshness in his gaze but it vanishes too quickly for you to fully understand. “I apologize for making you uncomfortable. It was never my intention.” He lowers his head, his lips are pressed in a firm line.
“I know.” He would never do anything to intentionally hurt you.
“Do you want to take a walk in the gardens?” he asks suddenly.
A break would do you some good. Following Malleus to the gardens, you stroll through the roses. Though the Queendom had lovely roses, there’s something about these roses that you like more.
He leads you to the center of the garden where you sit. You lean against his side, eyes closed, enjoying the fresh air. Malleus traces patterns on the palm of your hand. You sit like that for a while before Malleus breaks the silence.
“While you were away, I walked into your office wanting to see you. It made me realize how little time we spend together outside of our work. I’d like to spend more time with you doing things like this,” he admits.
You hum in agreement. “I’m always open to spending time together.”
Malleus weaves your fingers together with his. “Even if we don’t do anything?”
“Yes. Sitting here and enjoying each others’ company is enough.” Opening your eyes, you smile back at him. “I prefer this over you hovering.”
He nods. “I will keep that in mind. Perhaps next time I should be more clear with Lilia on my question…”
“Or you could ask me. Why not go to the source?” you suggest. It’ll save you from any miscommunication.
“Alright. I’ll come to you if I have any questions or concerns.” He chuckles as he squeezes your hand.
There’s a pause before you ask a question that’s been plaguing your mind for a while. “Why did you marry me? I don’t come from a country that can offer much, so it’s not like Briar Valley gained anything.”
Pulling away slightly, his brows crease. “Did your parents not tell you of the deal?”
“No. They just told me it was an honor to be marrying you.” They had told you nothing beyond that you were to marry a complete stranger. The glee in their gazes as they concocted their scheme to take over Briar Valley remains fresh in your mind.
He mutters something under his breath before shaking his head. “One of your ancestors from long ago sought out my grandmother for a blessing. Apparently their land was on the verge of collapse and my grandmother offered to bless the land once more. In exchange, they or their descendants would have to marry off their first born to her grandson. I wasn’t born then, but it seems grandmother already knew I would be eventually.”
You slowly process the information. “So essentially, it was just timing that it happened to be me?”
“My grandmother never really explained but when the time came, she told me I’d be marrying you.” He runs his thumb over your knuckles. “But I am glad it was you that I married.”
Your face warms as he gazes at you sincerely. “I’m glad too,” you manage to sputter out. Sometimes Malleus can say the sappiest things with a straight face. Yet, you know he’s always true to his feelings. It never fails to make your heart flutter.
Your gaze drops to his lips and stays there for a bit longer than you mean. You haven’t kissed him, and now you’re wondering how it would feel. You wonder if he would be a gentle kisser or would he bite at your lips with his sharp fangs. You wouldn’t mind either way…
Feeling your face warm at the sudden thoughts, you realize that Malleus has shifted a bit closer. Peering back at him, he watches you with half-lidded eyes. His usual bright eyes are dark with swirling emotions.
“Malleus…?” Your voice is barely a whisper.
He reaches up to stroke the right side of your face. He traces the curve of your jaw before gently grasping your chin. There’s a fire burning in his gaze as he leans closer. You stay completely still, barely daring to breathe.
His lips are inches away from you before he asks, “Can I?” His gaze flickers to meet yours.
You nod wordlessly and he-
“KING MALLEUS!” The voice that echoes through the garden causes you to jerk back in surprise. You almost stumble off the bench if not for Malleus’s quick reflexes as he steady’s you with a hand to the small of your back.
“Sebek, I don’t think you need to yell so loudly,” another voice admonishes with little heat.
Nervously clearing your throat, you quickly stand up. “Looks like your knights are looking for you.”
Warily turning in the direction of where the voices are coming from, his eyes narrow. “It would seem so.” He hands clench and unclench a few times before he stands. “I should go see what they want…”
“Right… See you later!” You make haste to leave before he can say anything else. You rush past Silver and Sebek on your way out of the garden.
“Your highness?” Silver calls to you, but you’re too busy running away to stop.
Face still warm, you can’t get the image out of your head. The way Malleus looked at you was like he wished to devour you whole. And you wouldn’t have minded.
---
The birthday party is as lavish as you could have imagined. A full orchestra plays music while guests mingle, eat food and dance. As guests arrive, they each approach Malleus to wish him a happy birthday. Presents are left in a different room as they’ll be opened later. Standing beside Malleus, you can feel your mouth aching as you politely smile at everyone that comes over.
Speaking of the birthday boy, he’s dressed impeccably in black silk accented by silver thread embroidery. His black mask is much like your own except the gems match the color of your eyes. His hair is slicked back though there are still a few stubborn strands that refuse to stay put. You can understand why he’s the love interest with how beautiful he is. Your heart did a weird flip when you saw him before the party.
“Are you alright?” Malleus asks once another guest leaves.
Meeting his gaze, you give a tired nod. “I didn’t realize how strenuous just greeting people can be.” From what you could remember, no one ever approached. You spent most parties trying to melt into the wall.
His lips turn slightly down in a frown. “You may rest if you wish. I can handle the guests.”
Shaking your head, you chuckle. “I’ll be fine. It seems like there aren’t too many more people coming.”
“If you’re sure…” He trails off as another guest arrives. This time, you recognize the guest as none other than the ruler of the Queendom of Roses, Riddle Rosehearts.
“Happy birthday and thank you for inviting me,” Riddle says, inclining his head in greeting. You admire the vibrant red mask he has. The design incorporates a subtle rose pattern.
Malleus greets him just as politely. “Thank you for coming, Rosehearts. We are both glad you’re able to come.”
With how many times he’s said the same thing, you can repeat everything word for word. “Is Yūki and Grim here?” you ask.
He shakes his head. “They went to the Coral Sea for something. They should be back in a week or so.”
“Oh…” You did want to speak with Yūki a bit more. You wanted to hear more about their adventures.
Riddle pauses as if wanting to say more. He shakes his head. “This is a celebration, so I will not bring up business. But perhaps we can meet again sometime. I’ll be in Briar Valley for a few more days.”
Nodding, you gesture for Diablo, who stands a bit away. His sharp eyes never miss anything. “Diablo, please discuss with his majesty when we can meet.”
“Of course, your grace.” To Riddle, he bows. “Please let me know when you would like to discuss scheduling, your highness.”
The redhead nods. “I’ll have one of my men reach out.” He turns to you with a smile. “It’s nice to see you again.”
As Riddle leaves, Malleus shifts closer to you. “It seems that the agreement with the Queendom is going smoothly.”
“Yes. Riddle Rosehearts is fair but has a firm hand.” He has his eccentricities, but from your conversations, he’s a good ruler. From the rumors you heard while in the Queendom, he’s loosened up a bit from when he first ascended the throne.
“You should come next time we’re invited to the Queendom of Roses,” you continue. “It’s a lovely place and so vibrant.”
“Do you prefer the Queendom to Briar Valley?” Malleus asks. The way he’s looking at you, you can almost hear sad puppy dog whines.
Biting your cheek to keep from laughing, you shake your head. “Of course not. The Queendom is different from Briar Valley. But Briar Valley will always be home because the people I care about are here.” And that’s the truth. You’ve come to like the people in Briar Valley. And though you won’t admit it aloud, you’ve come to like Malleus a lot more.
Before he can say anything else, a voice that sends chills down your spine breaks in. “Happy birthday, our dear son-in-law.”
Malleus turns to greet your parents as you try to contain your fear. Though you’ve only experienced them through old memories, your body involuntarily stiffens as you try to hide your shaking hands by clasping them behind your back.
“Duke and Duchess Wynters, thank you for coming,” you hear Malleus say. However, his voice becomes muffled as those old memories try to resurface. To outsiders, they look like a sweet older couple.
However, you know the truth. Their eyes are too cold. Their smiles filled with malice. Their hands are covered in your blood and the blood of others. Their hearts are darker than any ink and colder than ice. You force the memories that are trying to surface and adopt a neutral expression. You’re glad for once that you have a good poker face.
When you meet your father’s eyes, you almost forget to breathe. “Dear?” The sickeningly sweet way your mother calls to you fills your mouth with bile.
You managed to force a smile. “Mother, father, I’m glad you could make it.” As much as you didn’t want to, it would look suspicious if they weren’t invited.
“How could we miss our dear son-in-law’s birthday?” she chortles. “And we miss having you home. You haven’t been home at all since you got married. Your father and I are starting to think you don’t want to see us anymore.” She feigns hurt, but you know the truth.
You bow your head slightly. “I’m sorry. I’ve been so busy with everything that I didn’t realize how much time has passed. I promise to visit soon.”
“You should come too, Malleus,” your father says. “We’d be all too happy to host you for a few days.”
Digging your nails into the palm of your hand, you gently touch Malleus’s arm. “I think I will check in with Diablo,” you murmur.
Malleus nods though there’s worry in his eyes. “Of course. I will see you later.”
“Father, mother, if you’ll excuse me.” You force yourself to walk even though every fiber of your being wants to run.
When you’re out of their line of sight, you head outside to the garden. More guests mingle in the rose garden. Floating lights illuminate the garden making everything seem almost dream-like. Feeling the cool night air on your skin, you let out a big breath. The anxiety is still there, but at least you no longer feel like throwing up.
You didn’t think you’d have such a reaction to meeting the parents. You had memories, so you knew about the vile things they did to their own child. Yet, you had thought since you hadn’t seen them in awhile, things would be fine. But the moment you heard their voices, you lost all control.
Wandering away from the guests, you find a secluded area of the gardens. It’s quiet though the music from inside drifts faintly by. Taking off the mask, you breathe deeply for a bit. If you can avoid them for the rest of the party, you should be fine.
After a few more minutes alone, you decide to return. However as you turn to go back, something catches your eye. In the low light, it looks to be a rope of sorts. You reach down to pick it up but when your hand brushes against the rope, it moves.
You let out a startled gasp as a voice from the bushes grumbles, “You’re either brave or a fool for trying to touch my tail.”
The bushes rustle before a figure sits up. You stare wide eyed at the sleepy-eyed guest. His cat-like ears twitch as he regards you with annoyance. “Are ya gonna just stare at me with that stupid look on your face or apologize?” He glares at you as he pulls himself up and out of the bushes. His mask is nowhere to be seen.
Finding your words, you raise an eyebrow. “Well if you didn’t just leave your tail hanging around, I wouldn’t have mistaken it for something else. Maybe don’t go napping in other people’s bushes,” you bite back.
His eyebrow twitches but you can see the way his emerald green eyes light up. “Heh… you’re a brave one to be speakin’ to me like this.”
Standing up straight, you regard him coolly. “You speak so freely for being one of my husband’s guests, Prince Leona.”
You remember him now as he came with King Falena of the Sunset Savanna. He barely gave Malleus a glance before stalking off, though his nephew immediately ran after him. You’re pretty sure he didn’t even notice you as he seemed to want to get away as quickly as possible. You had read about Beastmen in the books, but this is your first time meeting them.
Leona was decked out in brightly patterned material that showed off both his lean physique and the wealth of the nation. The deep reds and turquoise complemented the gold mask that hung at his hip.
He scratches his ear nonchalantly. “So, you’re the one married to the lizard. Huh… you’re not what I expected.”
“And what did you expect?” You tilt your head to the side. He has a few leaves still stuck in his hair. Your hand twitches but you resist the urge to remove them.
He smirks. “A weak little herbivore. But it seems you actually have a spine.”
You feel your own eye twitch and his smirk grows wider. “So, what were you doing in the bushes?” you ask, changing the subject before you decide to do something un-royalty like.
Yawning, Leona stretches. “I was trying to take a nap.” He notices you’re staring at him intensely. “What are you looking at?”
Pointing to your head, you gesture around. “You have some leaves stuck in your hair.” He lazily swipes at his head but it does absolutely nothing. “No, you missed! No, no, a little more to the left.”
Grunting, he gives up. “Why do you take them off for me, huh?” He leans closer with a wicked glint in his eyes.
“Honestly…” You know you shouldn’t since you’re a queen and all, but the leaves are bothering you. Reaching up, you gently pick the leaves out of his hair. His hair is surprisingly soft to the touch. “Done!”
Looking up, his face is much too close. “Thanks, herbivore.” Your cheeks suddenly feel warm as his gaze doesn’t leave your face. His eyes are hooded as he watched you like you’re some kind of prey.
“…”
“There you are.” Whatever spell Leona had you under breaks as Malleus steps forward. You move away to a more respectable distance from the second prince.
The look on Leona’s face could kill a man. He scowls as Malleus places his hands on your shoulder. “Kingscholar, it’s nice to see you again.”
Leona mutters, “Whatever. I’m heading back inside.” He walks off without another word. Seems he can’t stand being in Malleus’s presence for even a second.
“He left in a hurry,”  Malleus muses.
Taking Malleus’s hand, you ask, “Did you need something?”
“I was just wondering where you wandered off to.” He glances at the direction Leona left. “You seemed to be very close to Kingscholar…”
“I found him napping in the bushes. He had some leaves in his hair, so I was just helping him get them out.” You chuckle when you notice the slight pout on his lips.
“Hmm… I see.” Sometimes he can be quite childish.
Deciding to distract him, you lead him to a back entrance to the palace. “I know it’s early, but I do have a birthday gift I wanted to give you.”
That perks him up. “You didn’t have to get me anything.”
“Of course I have to. And since you weren’t much help in figuring out what to get you, I had to do a lot of thinking.” You lead him to the kitchen, which is empty. “Stay there.” Finding what you’re looking for, you bring over a plate that holds a miniature cake.
He stares at the cake. “...”
Slicing the cake in half, you hand him a fork. “Just try it.”
Malleus hesitantly takes a piece. You watch as his confused expression melts into shock. “Ice cream?!”
Grinning, you nod vigorously. “Yup! It’s an ice cream cake. The pastry chef helped me make it since I’ve never done it before. It took a few tries but we got it eventually. I used some ice magic to keep it from melting.”
He chuckles as he sets his fork down. “You know I don’t like whole cakes, but you played quite a trick on me.”
Taking a bite of your own slice, you’re surprised how tasty it actually is.  “I thought a small one wouldn’t be so bad, and one filled with ice cream sounds even better. You don’t have to eat cake alone, Malleus.” You set the plate down on the table. “You have Lilia and your retainers. You have Diablo and the rest of the staff, who would love to share with you. And you have me.”
Reaching for his hand, you give it a gentle squeeze. He leans forward pressing his forehead against yours. “Thank you for the present. And thank you for being here with me.”
You recall your almost kiss in the gardens two weeks ago. Not quite brave enough, you gently grasp either side of his face. Moving back, you meet his tender gaze. You press a kiss to his forehead; his breath hitches. The scale markings on his forehead are cool to the touch. Pulling away, you watch as the apples of his cheeks slowly turn red. It spreads to his ears as he stands there frozen.
He doesn’t speak and you wonder if you broke him. “Malleus?”
Blinking a few times, the red has faded away. It’s honestly cute how the tips of his ears are still red. “Can I…can I kiss you?” he asks.
Heart thumping in your chest, you nod. No interruption this time.
You move your arms to drape around his shoulders as he grasps the side of your face. Leaning closer, you admire his long lashes. Closing your eyes, you feel his lips brush against your like a whisper. Then a little more firmly. His lips glide against yours in a sweet and hesitant kiss. He smells like magic, old parchment, and ink. He spends so much time working, you’re not surprised the smell has seeped into his very being.
He pulls away all too soon. He stares at you with the same look as in the gardens. He wants to swallow you whole. His hands have drifted to your waist as he hesitates to make another move.
You’re not quite done with him. “Come here,” you mumble before dragging him back for a better kiss.
You lead him in the kiss. It’s not hesitant as your mouth moves against his. You nibble at his lower lip before giving him a nice, sharp bite. He grunts before you soothe the sting with your tongue. His body shudders. You slip your tongue into his mouth causing his grip on your waist to tighten. Your fingers play the hair at the nape of his neck, twirling the strands around your finger and gently tugging. Your heart feels like it's going to beat out of your chest as your lungs beg for air.
Finally, you pull away with a gasp. Your face feels hot. He breathes heavily as he holds you flush against his body. Meeting his gaze, his pupils are blown wide. He licks his lips as he regards you. A pleasant shiver runs down your spine when you see his sharp canines glint in the light. You wonder again what it would feel like if he were to bite you.
He leans close again. “Can I have another?” he asks in a hoarse whisper. You’re all too eager to agree.
---
The party goes on long into the early mornings. After your alone time with Malleus, you both returned hand-in-hand. Thankfully it seems the guests are all too tipsy to even notice the birthday boy had disappeared. Only Sebek, Silver and Lilia notice. The green haired half-fae frets over where his master went. Lilia has a devilish smile on his lips while he gives you both a knowing look.
Malleus bids the guests goodnight, though the party continues. You’re about to follow when your parents stop you. Your grip on Malleus’s hand tightens for a second, but you quickly try to relax.
You smile as sweetly as possible. “Is there something you need?”
Duke Wynter picks off invisible lint on his jacket. “Your mother and I have something to discuss with you, dear.”
Glancing over at Malleus, you want to tell them to fuck off. However, you know you can’t. “Diablo, can you bring my parents to my study?”
“Of course, your majesty.”
As he leads them away, you turn to Malleus. “I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“Of course.” He leans forward and kisses your forehead. Your face grows warm at the gesture. His eyes sparkle as he smiles, amused. “Goodnight.’’
Letting out a deep sigh, you head to your study. Diablo is there waiting at the door. “You may leave, Diablo.”
“Your grace…?”
“You don’t have to stay. I’m just having a chat with my parents.” You offer a too bright smile.
The old butler hesitates before giving a bow. “As you wish. Goodnight, your highness.”
Stepping into the study, you close the doors. Your parents are busy looking around. Walking over, you square your shoulders. “What did you want to talk about?”
Your body tenses before your brain can process the pain.
SMACK!
Your mask flies off and clatters to the ground. The force of the backhanded slap causes your ears to ring. The left side of your cheek throbs painfully and a metallic taste fills your mouth. You stare at the ground blankly.
“You idiot!” your father hisses. “What did you tell the king!?”
You count backwards in your head from five before answering, still keeping your eyes on the ground, “I don’t know what you mean, father.”
He scoffs. “The war with the Queendom of Roses! We were supposed to have a war with them!”
You had almost forgotten about that. “I thought that making a deal for resources would be more beneficial. The land would have been otherwise destroyed beyond repair if a war broke out. It would be useless to you, father.”
The man paces back and forth. “We could’ve expanded our territory…”
Your mother’s shoes come into view. She grabs your face, tilting your head up so she can stare into your eyes. She squeezes your cheeks together and digs her nails into your skin. Your cheek hurts even more. “Oh, our silly, dumb child,” she tuts, clicking her tongue. “You don’t need to think. Just do what we have instructed and leave the rest to us.”
Her cold, sharp eyes gaze at you with disgust. She releases her hold. “Come, dear, no need to be agitated. We can always start a war after everything is complete.”
Your father stops pacing and sighs. “You're right.” He glares at you. “Stick to the plan,” he orders. You recoil when his hand raises, but by some miracle he decides not to hit you again.
The two brush past you. “Make you sure you heal that unsightly face,” your mother calls. “We don’t want anyone to get the wrong impression, do we?”
The door to the study opens and then closes with a thud. Staring at the wall, you fall to your knees. Hand resting lightly on your cheek, you run on autopilot as you heal it. There are many memories of something similar to this happening. And each time you’re left to tend to yourself.
You can’t tell Malleus. Not yet. If you reveal your parents’ plans, they’ll make sure to bring you down with them. You’re not sure how Malleus would react if he finds out you were trying to control him. Anyone in their right mind would be upset if they found out the truth. He might be understanding, but you’re pretty sure Lilia and the others wouldn’t be.
And there’s still the issue of the weapon. In the story, your parents find a dagger that can kill anyone, including a being as strong as Malleus. Yūki is able to get their hands on the dagger before it can be used. Yet, the story never explains where or how your parents got this magical dagger. It also glossed over how Yūki was able to get it. You need to find out.
So even as your body shakes, you’re determined to take them down.

♡ The little things ♡
Tumblr media
Summary: Matt has always been pressured to live up to his father and everything that he expects him to be. Y/n has always been very quiet and has been pressured by her whole family to step out of her comfort zone and live her life free from her worries. What will happen when they unexpectedly run into each other at a random ice cream shop?
(Warnings: Toxic family members (Nothing happens though dw it’s only mentioned)
Pt.2
(Matt’s POV)
“You want me to leave?! Fine then, I’m done dealing with this shit.”
I shout out across the house before slamming the front door behind me.
This is the third fight we've had this week.
Ever since my dad found out I've been ditching classes he's been on my ass about everything.
So what? I skip a couple of art classes. It's not like it actually matters.
The thing is my dad is a stern man. Ever since I was a child he told me that I needed to learn how to be a real man.
So that means I shouldn't ever talk about how I feel. I should just suppress my emotions, so I do that.
The only downside is that my emotions come back up in bursts of anger that I can't control.
It's not like I want to be this way, it's the way I've been wired since I could remember.
But the truth is I’m scared.
I’m scared that I’m never going to escape these emotions.
Everyone is going to forever know me as the miserable grump, Matt Sturniolo.
I wish I could change it around but nobody gives me the chance.
Maybe… when the opportunity arises I might have a chance, but I know that's not true.
As I start to spiral into worse thoughts, a hot pink neon sign in the shape of an ice cream cone catches my attention.
I find myself squinting my eyes as I try to make out the letters.
“Gelato Galore”
No way they’re being serious…
GELATO GALORE?
That's ridiculous but I might as well try it, all I want is to be alone and what better place to be alone than an ice cream shop during winter?
I step through the door and I’m instantly overwhelmed by the bright colours, I feel like I’m drowning in an ocean of pink.
It’s everywhere I look!
As my eyes dart around they land on the only person in the shop besides the workers.
It’s a random girl and she seems upset, I feel like I know her from somewhere but I can’t place it.
The way she looks is something you could only describe as a depressing portrait made by a struggling artist, her hair falling in front of her face as tears roll down her cheeks.
The redness on her nose matching the small cherry on top of her sundae that she seems to be refusing to eat by the way she pushes it aside.
I feel a strong urge to check up on her but I don’t know if I should. I’ve never been good at helping people in need.
I sigh as I walk up to the counter. Whatever she's going through is none of my business.
~~~~
(Y/ns POV)
I let out a couple of sad sniffles as I push the little maraschino cherry that's on top of my ice cream to the side.
He was supposed to be here fifteen minutes ago…
I keep telling myself that he must be stuck in traffic or maybe he's just running late and I'm overthinking it all.
I've been repeating all the different scenarios in my head and reasons why he could be late.
My nails impatiently tap against the pink plastic spoon they gave me, I feel as though I’ve been here for hours when in reality it has only been around twenty minutes.
Why can’t he just call me or even text me if he’s running late?
That's when I see my phone light up on the table. I quickly pick it up and I'm met with his contact name.
As I read the message he sent me I could physically feel my heart drop, all of the hope I had was crushed within a second
“I can't make it.”
What the fuck? No sorry? No explanation? Nothing.
I can't believe he could treat me with such disrespect.
I feel like such an idiot…
I sigh in defeat, I place my phone down on the table and dive straight back into my ice cream to distract myself from the current heartbreak I'm feeling.
As I scraped some ice cream from the bottom of the tub, I noticed that the chair in front of me had just pulled back and someone had taken a seat on it.
“Hey, I hope you don't mind me asking, but I couldn't help but notice that something seems to be bothering you. Is everything okay?”
what? I lift my head and I'm met with the sight of a stranger.
But he's not really a stranger, It appears to be Matt Sturniolo.
Although I have seen Matt at school and around the small town that we live in, we don't necessarily run in the same social group.
I sigh as I sit up straight and put down my now-empty ice cream tub.
“I'm fine, really. Don't worry about it.”
I look back down at the table, silently praying that he goes away but he stays.
“So…you a fan of ice cream?”
His small voice catches me off guard, I’ve never heard him talk with such little confidence.
Every inch of my body screams at me to get up and leave. To ignore the boy sat opposite. To run straight back to my room and rot in bed. Run back to my comfort zone.
But I hear my mother's voice ringing throughout my head.
“Come on, Y/n. You're not going to go anywhere in life if you don't put yourself out there. Just try it once, you might be surprised by what could happen.”
So I swallow every anxious feeling screaming at me to leave.
“Yeah. I mean… who isn't?”
A small smile on my lips. I lift my head to look at him, noticing the corners of his lips curled up slightly.
~~~~
I feel a peaceful smile tug on my lips, the scent of cold crisp air filling my senses.
I've always loved the winter. It has a sense of comfort that has always overwhelmed me.
I feel myself dipping deeper and deeper into a state of tranquillity when suddenly the boy next to me speaks up.
“You never answered my question earlier.”
He peers down at me. I sigh.
“What question?”
I know what question he's talking about. I've been asked the same question for years and I've grown to become annoyed at it as I grow older.
“I asked you, why are you always by yourself? Don't you have any friends?”
I tense up and he notices. He stops walking and grabs my wrist, forcing me to stop in the middle of the pavement.
“I'm sorry…”
I watch as his face contorts into a remorseful expression. His eyebrows knitting together.
“I didn't mean to come off as rude. It's just… I've seen you around school and you're always alone, I'm curious.”
I sigh as I look away from him. This is the last thing I need right now. I don't need someone here pointing out stuff that I already know.
It's frustrating. I tug my wrist out of his grip.
“Why don't you… oh, I don't know… mind your business.”
My tone is filled to the brim with annoyance. The way his face falls causes a twinge of guilt to seep into my heart but I push it down.
“Look, I'm just trying to help.”
He speaks through gritted teeth.
That was my last straw.
Without saying another word, I spin around on my heels and walk in the other direction. Completely ignoring the sound of his voice calling out for me.
So much for trying to make a friend.
(A/N: omg this literally took me weeks to finish 😭 I’ve been having an INSANE and extremely frustrating writers block but she’s done 😋 thank you so so much for reading <333)

Day 22
PHYS 302: Quantum Mechanics
It’s only a few weeks into the semester, and this class is already demanding way too much of my time. Ellie and I are still sitting next to one another. I think both of us are too proud to move. Our first exam is coming up in less than a week, and to say I'm nervous is an understatement. I can tell Ellie is stressed out about it too. She’s been studying every free second, biting her nails down to a nub, and she wore that same shirt yesterday. Not that I’m keeping track! We are spending a significant amount of time together between our class schedule and work. I guess you begin to notice little details about someone when you’re with them almost everyday. Even if it isn’t by choice.
I can’t think straight. So many variables are swirling around in my thoughts. Ellie. My increasing anxiety. This exam. Being the best at what I do. The professor lecturing is only background noise to the ardent contemplation of the current state of my life. Quite   frankly I’m struggling to understand what a quantum state is or why I should care about it. I’m only brought back to reality when I realize that Dr. L is talking to me.
“Are you listening?”
“I’m sorry. Can you repeat the question?”
“Can anyone else tell me what the variables are that define the quantum state of a system?”
Ellie quickly speaks up, “Compatible and Incompatible.”
“Correct, Miss Williams.” Dr. L glares at me as she turns back around to the dusty chalkboard.
I want to throw my head down against the desk. I knew that, and now I’ve made myself look like a fool in front of the class. I’m just so distracted by Ellie lately. Ever since she got in my face and said she intended to get the same lab position I’ve been dying to have, I feel frozen in time. I knew she wanted it, but it’s real now that she’s said it out loud. Getting into Dr. Ramsey’s lab could mean I have a fighting chance at grad school or even a future in research. It’s fucking important to me. It occurs to me that maybe Ellie and I could have an alliance. After all the saying goes, keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.
In the corner of my eye, I see Ellie chewing on her pencil. She’s studying again while I’m stuck explaining basic calculus to a freshman. It’s 8:07 p.m. Only 23 minutes till the end of my shift, but I tell her anyway that we’re closed for the night. I needed to escape the monotony of derivatives and integrals.
Ellie’s head lifts up as she hears me escort the girl out the door. It seems I piqued her curiosity, “Why did you tell her we’re closed?”
“She’s going to fail calculus with or without my help." I slump back in my chair knowing I'm barely conscious from my lack of sleep. "I’m just exhausted today. I don’t want to explain integrals again.”
A smile appears on Ellie’s face. She looks down at her hands before looking up at me again. I think I almost made her laugh.
“Trust me. I heard you explain it to her multiple times. I get it.”
Before I know it, a smile is materializing on my face too. I laugh knowing we have a mutual understanding. To be honest, Ellie kinda intimidates me. Maybe that's why when I’m around her it makes my body feel like it’s on fire. I can hear my heart pumping as she starts to move in closer to me ever so slightly. I know she’s waiting for me to say something else. Maybe I should say something else. I hope she doesn't notice how I choke on my words as I try to speak.
…
“Um, while we’re uh talking… I was just wondering how you felt about the exam on Friday.”
Ellie settles into her seat. Confidence seeps out of every pore of her body. I watch as she sets down the pencil she was once chewing on. “It’ll be easy. Maybe not for you, but it will be for me.”
“Sure… Ellie." I mirror her position. Trying to emulate the confidence she exudes. "I was just going to offer you some study tips in case you needed them.” I remark back at her.
She leans forward in her chair. Without warning, the air between us seems to thicken. “You could barely keep up today in class. I certainly don’t need any of your help.”
I lean forward too. “Really? Because I think that you’re studying every second you get because you know I’m better than you."
I stand up, and walk toward Ellie. As I begin to close the space between us, Ellie lifts herself out of her seat. She almost looks like she can't believe I'm saying this "..and you can’t stand the thought of it.”
Ellie looks like she's about to say something. Her mouth opens but closes. She turns around and opens up her bookbag. I watch as she rips a piece of paper out of a notebook. She writes something down.
She turns back around with a paper crumbled in her hand. Ellie inches toward me just like she did on our first night working together. My breath catches in my throat as my mouth goes dry. She pushes the piece of paper into my chest as I stumble backward.
She swivels on her foot and begins to pack up her things. I grab the paper and look at it. She remarks “It's my number for when you realize you’re the one who needs my help.”
…
As I walk out of work, the cold of the night makes goosebumps appear all over my arms. I am still in shock of what just happened. Ellie pushes past me and into the emerging nightfall. Her perfume lingers behind. She smells of mint and eucalyptus. Not wanting to disturb her, I continue walking a few paces behind her.
My head feels clouded. I feel overwhelmed by all of the thoughts spinning around in my head. Did she seriously just do that?
The moon brightens up the night sky as Ellie exits my view. My apartment building is only a few blocks away. I need to tell someone else about what happened tonight. I pull my phone out of my back pocket to text Dina.
8:33 P.M
you will never guess what just happened to me tonight
D: What??! Spill please!
Well... I asked Ellie about the exam in 302 and she basically said it’d be easy for her, but not me. So i said well maybe i could give you tips so you wouldn’t have to study every second of the day. then she gave me her number?!!! and said to text her when i realize that i am the one that needs help??
D: oh my fucking god.
isn’t she crazy?
D: I mean.. I think you both are.
D: but i’m curious if that’s her real number?
D: send it to me and i’ll let you know.
you have her number?
D: we might’ve exchanged numbers at some point..
???
D" well…. we kissed once or twice.
D: but we're not talking anymore
omg. DINA! why didn’t you tell me!!!
D: I thought you'd be mad and it was casual!!
D: send me the number!!!
I threw my phone onto my bed after I sent the number over to Dina. I doubt Ellie would give me her real number. She probably just wanted to fuck with me. Not that it matters if its real or not.. I wouldn’t text her anyway.
I’m disappointed that Dina didn’t feel like she could tell me about her and Ellie. I’m supposed to be there for her like she has been for me. I let this stupid rivalry get in the way of our friendship. Although when I look back on it, I don’t think they tried to hide it either. Maybe I’ve been too caught up in the fact that she was my nemesis to realize that Ellie and Dina were practically sitting on top of each other at parties or both missing at the same time. How could I have been so naïve to miss this?? My phone vibrates on my comforter. I feel my stomach drop. I’m not sure I even want to know. I open my messages with one eye open.
8:47 P.M.
yep. that's ellie’s number.

Day 26
PHYS 302 : Quantum Mechanics
The sun is shining in through the cracks of my blinds. My eyes are barely open. I feel the fatigue wash over me. The warmth of my bed is all-encompassing, but I know I have to pull the covers aside. My legs feel like lead as I walk into the bathroom to brush my teeth. The darkness under my eyes looks deeper than usual. I pulled an all-nighter studying for the exam today. I’m debating if I have enough time to run to the coffee shop down the street. I’m in desperate need of caffeine.
I end up walking to get coffee.I don’t think I’ll be able to keep my eyes open without it. The wind is starting to have a chill to it as summer slowly bleeds away. The bell rings as I walk in the door. This is the coffee shop I originally met Dina in. Her hair was shorter then. Our friendship continued to develop the more and more I came here. Then we found out we were working together at the tutoring center, and well the rest is history.
Walking into class with my iced latte in hand, I see Ellie. Her hair looks more disheveled than usual and her clothes wrinkled. Maybe I’m not the only one who pulled an all-nighter.
I’m not sure if the caffeine is helping me or just making my anxiety worse. Despite my fear that I may not have studied enough, I feel confident. I tell myself today is going to be the day I’ll be setting the curve. Not Ellie. Staying up all night is going to be goddamn worth it when I see that smirk Ellie wears off her face.
I look over at her as I sit down. She’s still biting her nails, but she doesn’t look at me.
I shift my body to look at her. She finally looks up from her notes. I whisper to her “Goodluck Ellie.”
Ellie looks at me and winks. She is wearing her exhaustion on her face, but her self-assurance is ever-present, “Goodluck to you too, sweetheart.”
I turn back around seething. The heat is rising to my cheeks, but I don’t have time to think further because Dr. L starts handing out our exams. I’m ready for it.
…
I’ve been anxiously pacing my room. Biting my nails even. I think Ellie is rubbing off on me. I dismiss the thought of becoming more like Ellie. The grades are going to be out tonight in 20 minutes. I continue walking back and forth on the hardwood floors of my room. I need to distract myself for just a little while longer. Instead, I keep brooding over my conversations with Ellie and the moment this exam score will come out.
Only a few minutes are left until the email will pop up in my inbox. I spend this time running over the exam in my head again. I’m pretty confident I answered everything correctly. Well maybe except for question 25, but I think I’m overthinking it.
My laptop pings, and I know it’s the results. My hands are damp as I lift open the screen. The subject line reads Exam Results. I click on the link
9:30 P.M.
Subject : Exam Results
Congratulations,
You’ve received the top grade on exam one with a score of 100%. Take pride in this!
Sincerely,
Dr. L
…
I am buzzing with excitement. I shoot up out of my seat and sigh with relief knowing my hard work was worth it. I subconsciously start thinking of Ellie. How she feels in this moment knowing that I did better than her. I take pleasure in thinking that she’s jealous of me. Thinking of me right now too. I catch sight of Ellie’s note crumpled up on my desk. Before I know it, her number is in my phone, and I’m typing out a text to her.
9:32 P.M.
Need my tips now Ellie?

Flings | Frankie Morales x f!Reader
Tumblr media
Pairing: Frankie Morales x F!Reader (no use of Y/N) Word Count: 3,975 Warnings: Mature, no smut smut, but illusions to maybe some smut? Talk of food, alcohol, and a little angst - I think that's it, I apologize if I've missed something, please let me know if there's something needing adding. Summary: Five times things were supposed to be a fling between you and Frankie until it wasn't... AO3: Linked
A/N: Bookstore Frankie has taken on a life of his own, the original piece that this all came out of will be finished soon and I hope it lives up to expectations - I'm determined this week to get my WIP list down!
Fling. noun 1. a short period of enjoyment or wild behaviour. - a short, spontaneous sexual relationship.
1. Just a Fun Night Out
You had thrown caution to the wind and sent Frankie a text message that night after Cat had left your apartment. As she had said, different was good and what was the worst that could happen? No sooner had you sent the message, you had a response almost instantly.
Frankie: I thought I wasn’t going to hear from you Maverick ;)
You hadn’t gone to bed until three am and called in sick the next day.
When he wasn’t participating in ‘military stuff’ the two of you were engaged in a back-and-forth of messaging. Seeing him again would have come sooner, but between the both of you, your schedules didn’t align until two weeks later. It had been intentional on Frankie’s part to arrange to meet at the same bar you’d had your first chance encounter.
Neither of you were under any false pretenses that this was going to be more than just a night of drinks, laughs and maybe, just maybe a nightcap at your place when closing time was called.
No sooner had you closed the door behind you his hands were in your hair, his body pressing you up against the door. It was a furious tangle of limbs as you both tried to free one another from your clothes. His hat was the first thing to go, thrown across the room. His fingers fought with the button of your jeans causing him to curse furiously in Spanish before your fingers took over. The air was thick with want and need, your bodies aching for each other. With precision, you unbuckled his belt and slid it off him, throwing it aside after his hat.
As you stumbled down the hallway towards your bedroom, the anticipation between you and Frankie grew more intense. At the edge of the bed, his hands roamed over your skin, leaving a trail of hot kisses on your neck and collarbone.  The atmosphere was electric as his hands slipped under your shirt, swiftly pulling it off. Your hands mirrored his actions, fingers deftly navigating the buttons of his shirt. Desperate to feel his skin against yours, you made quick work of them.
Together, you fell back onto the bed in a tangle of arms and legs. Taking a moment to catch your breath, Frankie framed your body with his, his arms holding him up over you. He dipped his head to kiss the tender spot between your neck and shoulder. His lips tracing your neck before his teeth nipped at your ear.
Your fingers snaked up his back, his shoulders before they tangled in his hair and with a tender tug you pulled his face to yours, your lips meeting his in a hungry and passionate kiss. There was a weight behind it, something more that neither one of you were able to think straight about, more focused on something more physical.
“I’ve been thinking about doing this since the moment I saw you tonight,” he said, his voice low and rough when you finally broke apart.
You smiled at him and ran a hand through his hair. “Likewise,” you replied.
As Frankie kissed you goodbye in the morning, you’d both smiled and agreed to meet up the next time Frankie was in town.
Somehow, conveniently, your schedules never had an issue of conflict from there out again.
2. A Chance Meeting in a Different City
A couple of months later, fortune seemed to pull you and Frankie together again in a momentous twist of fate. You found yourself in San Francisco for a work trip, your nose buried in a book at a coffee shop down on the pier. Frankie was there too, a coincidence that neither of you could have planned. Military aviation drills were taking place that week, and he was in the area for the events.
The day had been long, and you were lost in your thoughts when an imposing shadow suddenly crowded your space. Annoyance bubbled up inside you, but as you looked up, ready to voice your irritation, you were stopped in your tracks.
Standing there, looking just as surprised as you felt, was Frankie.
“Maverick,” he said, flashing that teasing grin of his.
“Frankie!” You exclaimed, jumping up and nearly knocking over your coffee. “What on Earth are you doing here?”
“Could ask you the same thing,” he said, sliding into the seat across from you.
The initial shock quickly turned into pleasure as you both recognized the serendipity of the situation. Plans were hastily rearranged, and the two of you decided to seize the opportunity to explore the city together.
Over the next few days, you found yourselves walking the bustling streets and enjoying the tourist sights of San Francisco between conference meetings and Frankie’s own commitments.
Nights were spent in your hotel room, it seemed no matter the city you both seemed to gravitate towards your bed. The past months had consisted of frequent visits to Seattle by Frankie and you'd even made the journey down to Pierce County to see him once or twice.
“You ever think about how this all started?” Frankie murmured, his breath warm against your ear.
“With your pilot pickup line?” you teased, snuggling closer to him.
He rolled his eyes, “Yeah, that, and everything else. I mean, what were the odds we'd meet like that? And then run into each other again here?”
It all felt so natural, so effortless, that neither of you questioned it.
3. New Year's Eve
Cat and her husband were throwing a New Year's Eve party and you had casually asked Frankie what his plans were two days before. He had told you that he was free and so you’d asked him if he wanted to join you, and you told yourself it was because no one should be alone for the new year and that was the only reason you’d extended the invitation.
The insanely large Costco-sized TV illuminated the living room playing the start of the countdown of the New York Times Square ball drop.
Ten.
You laughed at the party hat Cat had just unceremoniously placed on Frankie's head, she told him that it was strange seeing him out without his standard hat on, so in her tipsy state had written Standard Oil on the paper cone hat in Sharpie and plopped it on his head before giving you an equally garish one to wear also.
Nine.
The bubbles of the champagne tickled your lips as you brought it up for a tiny sip, ready to toast the New Year once the countdown was complete.
Eight.
Frankie reached around you to grab his own glass, he shifted closer, his hip knocking into yours, he didn’t step back.
Seven.
Your heart started beating a little faster, a mix of excitement from the impending new year and the unexpected intimacy of Frankie's proximity. The scent of him, familiar yet always exciting, mingled with the festive air around you.
Six.
The room was getting louder as more people appeared from around the house to watch the ball drop. Frankie’s hand rested on your hip as he turned you to face him.
Five.
You tried to dismiss the fluttering in your stomach as just the champagne, but deep down, you knew it was something more to do with the man in front of you.
Four.
The countdown was nearly over, and the room was filled with anticipation. But the only thing you could focus on was the look in Frankie's eyes.
Three.
As the countdown was close to reaching its climax, the room started to fill with shouts of excitement. But amid the festive chaos, you were drawn into an intimate bubble with Frankie. He leaned in, his breath warm against your ear, and whispered, “I'm glad I came tonight.”
Two.
You turned to face him, your eyes locked, the world around you forgotten. “Me too,” you whispered back, your voice filled with emotion.
One.
As the crowd around you erupted in cheers, and the New Year was ushered in, Frankie's lips met yours in what started as a sweet kiss before your arms wrapped around his neck and his around your waist. The kiss deepened and the two of you tried not to spill the drinks in your hands.
“Happy New Year Mav.” he grinned as he pulled back to look you in the eye.
“Happy New Year Frankie,” you echoed, your voice catching a little.
Frankie's hand found yours, his fingers intertwining with yours. He leaned in to kiss you again, happy that you had messaged him two days before with an invitation to see in the New Year's. He hadn’t cancelled plans so fast before, furiously texting Santiago that something had come up and wouldn’t be attending the arranged party on base.
“Want to get out of here?” he asked before draining his glass.
You nodded enthusiastically as you finished your own drink, “Let’s go.”
4. Valentine's Day
The salty taste of the bacon from your sandwich left its mark on your lips, and Frankie couldn't help but admire your quick tongue poking out to lick them away. In response, he licked his own lips appreciatively.
You were both in your bed, the sheets dishevelled and the only reason Frankie wasn’t as naked as you were was because of the breakfast you were both eating. He’d not long returned with the food and coffees for you both from the bakery down the street after the two of you had enjoyed a lazy morning bed. You'd fallen back asleep and the breakfast was a welcome surprise.
What had also been a pleasant surprise was the bouquet of red roses that had turned up at your door the day before his arrival in town, Valentine's Day, with a card attached that simply said: “Just because.” You hadn’t questioned him on them. Just breathed in the aroma of the fresh flowers before finding something to put them in. Then spent the day working from home admiring the display out of the corner of your eye
You glanced up shyly from your sandwich as Frankie’s gaze on you grew more intense.
“What?” you asked, feeling the heat creeping up your skin.
He leaned forward and brushed his thumb over your bottom lip before pressing his own to yours. He pulled back, smiling. “Nothing, I just can’t take my eyes off of you.”
You feigned indifference to mask the effect his words had on you, trying to make light of it.  Placing your now empty plate on the bedside table you looked back to Frankie, laid out on the bed next to you. His arm was folded under his head and you could see the bottom half of his tattoo poking out from under his shirt sleeves. The lines of which you had become very familiar with over the past months.
Shuffling over you straddled his hips, your knees nestled on either side as your hands pushed up his shirt to pepper kisses over his chest. With little fight, it wasn't long until his shirt was up and over his head and flung to the floor. He buckled his hips up and there was no missing the small "mm" that escaped from his lips.
“Mav,” he breathed as his hands pulled you down to crash his lips against yours.
His kiss was a sudden rush, igniting butterflies in your chest. Your lips parted instinctively, and the soft touch of his tongue against yours sent shivers down your spine. In that moment, all resistance melted away as he gently guided you onto your back, his weight settling above you.
“Thank you for the flowers,” you murmured quietly as he trailed your jaw with kisses.
You could feel the smirk forming as he continued his trail to your ear where he nipped your ear, “No clue what you're talking about.”
5. A Wedding
You weren't sure when you both started relying on phone calls rather than texting one another. But it had become commonplace for either of you to carry out everyday tasks with the other's voice in your ear, chatting about any and everything.
It was during one of those calls that Frankie had asked if you would be his plus one. Get out of town for the weekend, free drink, free food, good company and two nights in a swanky hotel he'd jokingly said he had no business staying in, and maybe your presence alongside him might bump up his status allowing him to get away with staying.
You don't know what made you say yes - but you did.
You'd danced, flirted, enjoyed one another's presence and finally met the elusive men that formed the operative group Frankie was a part of.
“So,” you grinned over the glass of wine in your hands, “you're all real then.”
“Yes ma'am,” Will replied from across the table, tipping his drink to you.
“For a while here Francisco,” you said his name slowly and deliberately, savoring the way it rolled off of your tongue. You'd noticed that each time you called him by his full name, he'd let out a slight smile at the corner of his lips, “had me believing that his whole pilot thing was some elaborate ruse.”
Frankie chuckled, taking a sip of his own drink. “I'm not that good of a liar,” he said with a wink. You knew he was telling the truth about being a pilot; after all, the private tour of the barracks he'd given you shortly after you met cleared that suspicion.
You shook your head smiling, “No, you're not.”
Santiago smiled widely as he gave Frankie a friendly pat on the back, “She's a catch, Frankie.”
Frankie held his hand out to you, beckoning you sincerely. “C'mon Mav, come dance with me.”
So you allowed him to lead you out to the dancefloor, it was a slow song that the two of you swayed along to. His hips pressed against yours, his hands at your waist, yours around your neck.
As the song ended, Frankie didn't release you from his hold. Instead, he dipped his head down, his lips brushing against your ear. “You look stunning tonight,” he murmured, his breath hot against your skin. “Thank you for coming with me.”
Your heart fluttered in your chest, his words sending a shiver down your spine. “You don't look too bad yourself,” you replied, a hint of teasing in your voice. “and you're welcome.”
Amidst the laughter and the champagne toasts, you both found yourselves watching the newlyweds with a strange sense of longing, though neither of you mentioned it to the other. Choosing instead to brush it off as nothing more than a fleeting emotion, but it lingered, nagging at you both for the remainder of the weekend.
The One Night.
He never came into town on a weekday, it was always between a Friday and the weekend. That should have been your first indication that something was up. He also hadn’t used the ridiculous nickname he’d bestowed on you, Maverick, that outwardly you voiced your displeasure at but inwardly you had grown quite fond of it.
The other bigger tell that something was going on was the fact that he hadn’t kissed you. He’d kissed your forehead when he’d walked through the door, hugged you a little longer once he made it through the threshold and was now sat as far as possible at the other end of your sofa.
It was just a year shy of the night the two of you had first met.
Your relationship had defied conventional labels, existing in the spaces between dates and casual encounters. Though words had never been exchanged, the unspoken understanding between you both was a bond that had grown stronger over the last year. But with the way he was acting, you were convinced this was it. That this was him telling you that he'd met someone.
So when the words, “I'm being stationed in Colorado next month.” came out of his mouth, he'd had to ask if you'd heard him because you were still processing that there wasn't another person.
“You're...what?” you finally managed to stammer, looking at Frankie, his eyes filled with a complex mixture of excitement, fear, and uncertainty.
“I've been reassigned to a new base in Colorado,” he repeated, his voice firm but his eyes soft, searching your face for a reaction, “but I... I don't want to go without talking to you about it.”
You blinked at him, your mind still reeling, the weight of what he was saying sinking in slowly. This was more than just a fling. It was more than just a casual thing between two consenting adults. This was real, and the very real possibility of losing him was hitting you like a sledgehammer.
“You want to talk about it?” you asked, your voice trembling, tears threatening to spill over. “What is there to talk about? You're leaving.”
Frankie's face fell, and he moved closer, reaching out to take your hand. “It's not that simple, and I know you know that.”
“Know what?”
Removing his hat and tossing it onto the coffee table, he ran his hand through his hair with a frustrated sigh. His gaze fixed on you with a mixture of exasperation and affection. “Come on Mav, I know you're not this obtuse,” he stated with a playful grin, as if the answer to the unspoken question was written across your face.
You swallowed hard, “Frankie, I–” you attempted to find the words as your brain struggled to catch up.
“Look, whatever this is,” he didn't wait for you to find your voice, “I'm not ready to walk away, at least not without at least asking you first,” you watched his shoulders raise in a deep sigh as it let it go slowly, “will you come with me? To Colorado, will you come with me?”
The air was sucked out of your lungs and the room was filled with silence, your mind racing as you processed what he was saying. It was true, the two of you had become more than just a fling, but this was big. This was a life-altering decision.
You stared at him, disbelief written all over your face. “Come with you? To Colorado? Frankie, I have a life here. A job, friends, family.”
“I know,” he said, his voice cracking, “I know it's a lot to ask, but I can't imagine being there without you. I, I can't imagine my life without you.”
The tears were flowing now, and you were unable to stop them. A year of emotions, a year of denying what you felt, what you wanted, was crashing down around you, and there was no escaping it.
“You're asking me to give up everything,” you said, your voice filled with doubt. “You're asking me to take a huge risk.”
Frankie wiped away your tears with his thumb, “I'm asking you to decide if this is something you want, if you're willing to take a chance on me, on us… me.” he took in a deep breath, “But if you're feeling anything like I do about you, then you know that I'm serious about this, about us.”
When you didn't respond he sighed, “Look, I'm going to go and let you think about this. I'm not leaving for another month. If you don't want to come, then–” he drifted off, he hadn't really contemplated the possibility of you saying no, “then it's been an amazing year and–” his voice caught in his throat, “and I think I can be happy with that.”
He leaned in and kissed you. It was a deep embrace, his lips lingering on yours. His stubble gently scratched your face as if it were the last time he would feel you this close to him. He lingered for a moment, his forehead resting against yours as he took in a deep breath before he stood and left your apartment.
You sat in the silence of your living room, the click of the front door an echo as you processed what had just happened.
Frankie was leaving for Colorado in a month.
Frankie had asked you to move to Colorado.
Frankie loved you?
You looked at the coffee table, Frankie's hat was still there where he'd left it.
You snatched the hat from the table and grabbed your keys before sprinting to the door. With no time for an elevator, you took off down the four flights of stairs. When you reached the lobby, it was empty.
You opened the door to your apartment building and frantically scanned the street, looking for Frankie. There he was, standing beside his truck down the street, his hand in his pocket for his truck keys. You watched him run a hand through his hair and curse when he realized he didn't have his cap. You didn't waste any time as you watched him fish his keys out of his jacket and unlocked the door of his truck.
“Frankie!” you shouted, he looked up startled, his hand on the door handle.
You continued to run towards him, your heart pounding in your chest. When you finally reached him, you practically collided into his chest, wrapping your arms tightly around him. He stumbled back a few steps, but quickly regained his footing and returned the embrace.
You were talking into Frankie's chest, a rapid, breathless spill of words that tumbled out in a rush. He couldn't make out what you were saying, but he held you close, his arms strong and reassuring around you.
“Mav,” he said gently, trying to calm you down. “I can't understand what you're saying. Please, slow down.”
You stepped back, your eyes wide and filled with a mixture of fear and determination. You took a deep breath, trying to steady yourself.
“Frankie,” you said, your voice trembling. “I'll go with you. Wherever it is, I'll go with you,” you said with more conviction to your voice. “I don't know how this is all going to work and logistics,” You said with a small laugh, “but I do know,” you took in a deep breath, “I love you and I'm not okay with the idea of this between us just ending here.”
“That's all I need to hear,” He dropped his forehead to yours, there was no missing the smile that lit up his face, “I love you too Mav.”
He slipped one hand around your waist as he softly thumbed your lips with his other, before leaning in to kiss you. The kiss was sweet at first, but soon turned into something more. Something hungry, something desperate to make up for the both of you failing to acknowledge what had been growing between you for so long.
“Do you have to be back on base tonight?” you asked breathless.
He shook his head, letting out a laugh. “I took a couple days off,” he admitted with a shy smile. “I wasn't sure how this was going to play out—it was either ending in your bed together or drinking beer in mine alone.”
“I think I have a couple of sick days I can cash in if you still want to finish this in bed? I mean, I have beer too.”
Frankie chuckled, “I'd like that,” he leant down to place another kiss to your lips, the admittance of your feelings for one another giving him no restrictions in letting you know how he really felt. “I think we have some catching up to do,” he said softly
You nodded, smiling through the tears that still lingered. “Yeah, we do,” you murmured, and hand in hand, the two of you headed back to your apartment.

Ties to The Past
Tumblr media
Death x ghost/soulmate!Reader
“Wait…is it really you, old friend?” If you had any blood in your body, it would’ve run cold. There was no mistaking that voice. The wrinkled old spirit in front of you, the soul who was standing next to the lifeless body in the bed, the person Death had come to reap, was a former friend of yours from when you were alive, years and years ago.
A/N: Sorry for the lack of a post yesterday. After posting something nearly every day for about a week, it felt weird not doing so last night. However, I come bearing a 3k part two to this 2 am post, aka Red String. This story has shifted a bit, but I hope you all enjoy. I have more planned out for this AU. It shouldn't be more than five or six parts, and I'll hopefully finish it by the end of next week, if not the end of this week. In the meantime, this is a little reminder that my requests are open (guidelines in pinned)! Thank you for all the love on Red String!
Part One | Part Two |
Tumblr media
“I’m sorry, mi fantasma. You can’t come with me on this one.”
Your eyes widened in shock before narrowing in suspicion. “Why not?” You floated over the wolf’s head, peering down at him. After what seemed like forever, you figured out how levitation worked, and it was now your favorite means of getting from place to place. Being a ghost had its perks, aside from the whole being dead thing.
Death, however, was not tolerating this at the moment. He batted you away with a grim expression on his face. “I can’t tell you.” Seeing your hurt expression, he sighed. “You won’t want to see this particular soul. They’ve done some…unpleasant things.”
You groaned, floating a bit further ahead of him as you gestured around you. “We’re in the middle of a small little seaside town,” you said incredulously. “What kind of ‘unpleasant things’ could this person have done?”
You had a point. The town the two of you walked (or floated) through was the epitome of an idyllic seaside life. The mid-afternoon air carried in from the sea was crisp and smelled faintly of brine. The red roofed houses were full of life and color. People, unaware of Death’s presence and certainly not of yours, called out to one another, selling wares, fruits, and fish, and children raced down to the seashore. Seeing the ocean’s horizon and the endless shades of blue filled you with excitement.
Slowly, you returned to the earth and walked alongside Death on the cobbled road, your red thread growing warmer at the physical proximity. “I’ve seen you work a ton of times before, Muerte. Good people, bad people. Old people, young people. I think I can handle another soul collection.”
“Don’t get cocky now,” he chuckled. He tugged on his hood to further obscure his face, though no one could see him at the moment. “I mean it, cordero,” he muttered. “When we arrive at the house, I want you to stay outside.”
You had died a long time ago. But when you did, your red soulmate thread appeared and connected you to Death. And not metaphorically or rhetorically or poetically or theoretically or in any other fancy way. Your soulmate was Death, straight up. Ever since he cut the silver cord connecting your soul to your physical body, you’ve traveled with the wolf and kept him company. Though he never said it aloud, you could tell he appreciated this, and that a small part of him needed it too.
Wolves are social creatures, you thought to yourself as Death changed the subject to a cat who was shot out of a cannon not too far from these shores. Death loved stories. His tail always wagged a bit whenever you told him a story about your life. Even after you thought you had run out of stories to tell, he always managed to dig up a memory of yours that you had thought you had completely forgotten. It amused and interested him to hear you talk about your life, and it kept you sane too. After all, it must have been…decades since you died. The fear of forgetting your life always haunted you, which was annoying because you were a ghost, and you were supposed to be the haunter and not the haunted.
At least if there was one person you knew you were haunting successfully, it was Death. Your red thread made sure the two of you were never too far from one another, but even without that thread, it would be practically impossible to separate you from his side. If being by his side and providing each other company as the world moved on and on and on was supposed to be your “happily ever after,” you weren’t going to complain.
But you were going to complain if he didn’t let you join him on this one little job. “Why don’t you think I can handle myself?” you asked him one last time. “Don’t you trust me?”
The wolf stopped suddenly. If you had a physical body, you would’ve walked straight into him. You stood in front of him now with a stern glare. The thread felt heavier than it usually did. An unreadable expression was on Death’s face. His eyes twitched a little as he spoke. “It’s not that I don’t trust you.”
“Alright then.”
“It’s that I’m worried for you.”
This wiped the glare off of your face. You faltered. “What?”
Muerte pointed up at the window of the large house you two stopped in front of. “Up there in that bedroom is the soul I have to collect. An elderly person who has lived a life full of popularity, wealth, and status and died peacefully in their sleep during a post-lunch nap.”
“Sounds…pretty nice,” you mumbled. A scowl crossed your face. “So what? You think I’m going to get hurt because I’m going to see a person who lived a full life? I’ve seen plenty before!”
“It’s not just that, mi fantasma,” continued Death slowly. “They did not live a truly full life. They’re alone right now. And no one will know that they’ve died for quite some time. Despite their riches and ranking, no one was truly ever close with them. At least, there is no one they hold close anymore.” He placed a paw on your shoulder. “I have the feeling that they might resist me while I try to do my job, and I don’t want you to have to see me get…” He paused, tilting his head a bit and chewing on the words. “Violent.”
Realization dawned on your face slowly, softening your features. “Oh.”
“Oh,” he nodded. The wolf sniffed the air a bit. “I have to go in now. Stay here, alright?” He gently tugged on the string, warmth filling your bodies. “I’ll be right back.”
He began to whistle his eerie little tune, and in a blink, he was gone. Your thread showed that he was already up in the bedroom. You sighed. You weren’t going to complain. You were going to listen and be a good little ghost and respect his wishes and stay outside.
But you were worried about him.
You had no doubt that Death could handle himself in a fight. He was tall and strong, and his reflexes were terrifyingly quick. Though you’ve seen him use his sickles to cut cords, you knew he could use them very well in a fight. He was an immortal being, for folk’s sake. No one escapes Death. But even so…
A chill went up your spine as you tried to lean casually against the wall of the house and fell through to the other side. You jolted upright, finding yourself in the living room of the house. You could hear quiet murmuring upstairs. Well, you were already inside. One small peek wouldn’t hurt would it?
Right?
There was a loud crash and your chest suddenly burst into pain. “Muerte!” You phased upwards through the floor and found yourself in the bedroom.
Death stood with his back to the wall, startling when he saw you. He didn’t look hurt, but his eyes were burning a violent scarlet.
You rushed to the wolf’s side, hands searching for injuries. “Muerte, are you alright?”
He tightly shut his scarlet eyes before shaking his head and opening them. They were a bit less red, but the intensity remained. “I’m fine. But that,” he said, pointing to the other side of the room, “That’s a problem.”
On the other side of the room was the phantom. They were still connected to their physical body by their silver cord, but their spectral form was fizzling in and out of existence in anger. Black and red, hazy and undefined, its aura was one of nothing but anger.
“Here’s what I think we should do,” Death began as he struck his sickles together. “We- what are you doing?” he sputtered as you left his side and walked up to the phantom.
It screeched and it hissed, and the air around it seemed to burn hot, a sensation you hadn’t truly felt since your death. Everything sounded like static, but you stared intently at where you hoped their face was.
“You’re dead, and there’s nothing you or he,” you added, gesturing towards the wolf, “can do about it.” You glanced at the spirit’s physical, lifeless body. Their wrinkled face was in a grimace. Shutting your eyes tight, you focused on being able to touch the body and shifted the face’s expression to one of peace.
The phantom was less agitated, letting out a small confused shriek. “You can’t go back to your body or the life you used to have. I know it hurts,” you added quietly, “Having to let go. Realizing you can’t wake back up. But that big wolf over there?” You gestured at Death, who stood silently behind you. “He’s a really nice guy. And he’s going to cut that cord of yours and send you off to the spirit world. You’re going to be alright.”
The phantom’s edges began to sharpen, becoming less blurry. It drew closer to you. Behind you, you could hear Death’s low growling. The red thread in your chest seemed to bunch up in a tight knot. You held your breath. And the intense air in the room was gone, and the phantom was no longer a faceless specter, but a spirit more akin to the body in the bed. In fact, that face looked very familiar.
“Is it really you, old friend?”
If you had any blood in your body, it would’ve run cold. There was no mistaking that voice. The wrinkled old spirit in front of you, the soul who was standing next to the lifeless body in the bed, the person Death had come to reap, was a former friend of yours from when you were alive, years and years ago. You had a falling out just before you died actually, if you remembered correctly.
“H-hi..” you said quietly. You offered a small wave.
They didn’t wave back. “You don’t look like you’ve aged a day since…”
“I decided to stick around the mortal plane for a while,” you said lightly, trying to lean back against the wall before realizing Death was behind you. You heard him quickly sheathe his sickles, and he caught you as you stumbled into his arms. But his hands were tight on your shoulders as he set you back up while you laughed nervously. He didn’t let go.
Your former friend blinked slowly. Oh, this was going just splendidly. You plastered a bigger grin on your face as you left Death’s grip and walked around the room jauntily. There were paintings all over the walls of different people with your old friend in golden frames. As you took a look around the room, you realized how lavishly it was decorated with bright cushions and heavy drapery, unusual for a seaside house. “Glad to see you lived a nice and full life! It looks like you had a lot of fun and are- were- erm, doing really well for yourself!”
“I did.”
“I’m kinda jealous, you know. I died pretty young,” you chuckled, enunciating the ‘t’s and wagging a finger.
You cast a glance at Death, who still stood in front of the spirit. His gaze was… questioning. Are you okay? he asked silently with a slight tilt of his head. The red string connecting the two of you tightened.
You shook yours slightly in response, but circled back to your old friend. “But I’m still hanging around and all that. I might not be alive but I feel alive getting to hang out with Muerte everyday.” Oh, what the hell. That was such a stupid thing to say.
The spirit raised an eyebrow. “You hang out with this guy? Isn’t he Death?”
The wolf rolled his eyes. “Yes, I’m Death.” He drew his sickles again. “And I think it’s time for you to go.”
“Hold on, hold on. Why are you sticking around him?” Your friend’s brows furrowed. They took your hands in theirs. “Why don’t you come with me?”
Death stiffened as you let go of their hands. “Well, the funny thing is…he’s my soulmate.” You splayed your hands out awkwardly, letting the statement sink in.
The room was still for just a moment. “Your red string. Is connected. To Death?” The spirit said slowly. And then they burst out into laughter. They wheezed, clutching their sides as you stood awkwardly in front of Death. “You?” they laughed. “With Death? Oh, I’m so sorry. That’s some really messed up luck. Fate was not on your side.”
“I’m starting to remember why we had that falling out,” you said through clenched teeth.
“Oh, please. Relax. I just thought you were doomed to die alone without a soulmate. I mean, you remember all those people you’d talk to. You were so desperate to find your soulmate. And you end up dying and this guy is your soulmate? What, is he keeping you captive or something? Come on, let’s just get to the spirit world. Together! Then I can introduce you to all the famous people I met. Maybe one of them will really like you, who knows?
“This entire thing with Death was probably just a mistake. Who could ever love a big bad wolf like him?”
You were ready to punch a ghost in the face, but Death beat you to it. “It’s time for you to go,” the wolf growled, stalking forward.
The spirit raised their hands over their head as if that would stop Death himself. “W-wait!”
With one clean swipe, Death slashed their silver cord. The spirit was freed from their physical body. Death gave them no time to react. With an upwards motion, his sicles cut through the fabric of the universe. The light of the shimmering doorway to the spirit world blinded everyone in the room momentarily. But the light didn’t stop Death. Before the spirit began to process what was happening, he shoved them through the door before deftly grabbing the edges of the ripped seam and pulling it shut. He slashed the air with his sicles to clear the air.
It was all over in the matter of seconds.
He stood still, breathing heavily. His hands gripped his sickles tightly, shaking.
You could feel the string grow taut, and you hesitantly drew closer to the wolf. “They’re wrong, you know.”
He blinked, suddenly remembering you were there. He stepped towards the window, laughing as he looked outside. He refused to meet your eyes. “I know. But I’m Death. They don’t get under my skin. They can think whatever they want. They can’t escape me and they certainly can’t change who I am. I’m fine, really.”
“I hate to break it to you,” you said gently, “But I’m pretty sure you’re lying to yourself right now.”
“I’m not,” Death grumbled. He sheathed his sickles. Looking back at the body on the bed, he gently tucked it in before heading to the door. “Let’s get out of here.” He stomped out of the bedroom, leaving you to follow.
“Wait!”
You quickly ran out to follow him.
“Muerte!”
On the stairwell, his ears twitched a little. He turned to look at you, halfway out of the bedroom door. “¿Sí, mi fantasma? What is it?”
You opened and closed your mouth, trying to figure out what to say. You stepped forward, while pulling him closer by pulling on the red string. “Don’t believe a word they said. I chose to stay  in the mortal realm. I wanted to get to know you and I wanted to be there for you. All my life,” you choked out, “All my life, I looked for a soulmate. I met so many people with so many fascinating stories and lives. But even though I wasn’t alone, I still felt lonely.”
“Are you trying to say that you think I’m lonely?” Death teased.
“Yes!” you blurted out. “Yes, I think you’re lonely! But I don't want you to have to be lonely anymore! I don’t think you’re a big bad wolf! You’re- you’re a big good wolf! You’re strong and gentle and- I can’t believe I’m saying this- you are really attractive!”
What.
The.
Folk.
“Oh my fairy godmother.” Your hands flew to your face as you knelt to the ground, unable to process your outburst. “I want to die. Again.”
“I love you too.”
You looked up. “What?”
“I love you too.” Death looked down with a smirk. He bent down, elbows on his knees. His smirk softened to a smile as he placed a hand on your shoulder. “I know what you were trying to say. Thank you… I needed that.” He hesitated. And then he kissed your forehead, gentle and sweet.
The red thread seemed to come alive and your entire body felt like it was burning, but in the best way possible. Without thinking, you grabbed the string and tugged it down, leading Death to your lips. He didn’t object. And for however long that kiss lasted, you finally felt alive again. You could smell the dirt and seabrine in his fur, soft and cold under your hands. You felt the phantom sensations of your heart racing. He was tender and soft, though as you both pulled away, you could see a hungry look in his eyes, as if he were ready to devour you in an instant.
God, you wanted to kiss him again.
“We better get going,” you coughed, rising to your feet quickly.
Death followed suit. “Certainly.”
The two of you walked out of the house and into the street. Death didn’t put on his hood. But your hand did find its way into his. He gave it a small squeeze.
“I love you, Muerte.” You said quietly when you reached the edge of town. The two of you stopped. Dusk was quickly settling down over the seaside town. The two of you stood on the edge of the main road. He gave you a long look, red eyes cutting through the dark. “Do you believe we’re soulmates?”
“I do.”
He said this without hesitation or doubt. And by the look in his eyes, you knew he believed it.
==x==x==
“I must say though, I’m surprised you find me attractive. I didn’t think I’d be your type.”
“Please. I don’t want to die another time out of shame.”

Chapter 7: "As Long As I Have You In My Life"

Chapter 6:
Osamu..I think you’re a good man.
Six little words, six little words brought his entire world to a stand still.
The foolishness of them danced across Dazai’s brain over and over again trying to decipher anything and everything about them only to come up empty. He couldn’t comprehend them, he couldn’t form them into reality no matter how hard he tried.
So much so, that time passed by in a millisecond, Dazai staring at absolutely nothing, not present in the world at all.
The bustling laughter of children as they made their way to school, the soft music from the speakers of the nearby shops, the feeling of a soft breeze across his features, none of them registered inside his brain.
The only thing that did was the weight on his back, both emotional and physical as Asagao’s form slept motionless, unaware of the malfunction she had ushered by saying those six stupid, foolish and dangerous words.
Just then, his phone started to sound inside his pocket only for the executive to finally look down and pull the object out, the move causing Asagao’s lips to let out a disgruntled groan in the process in order to shift the back of her head further across his shoulder.
Answering the call, Dazai then heard a very familiar voice, pissed off per usual. “Hey Dazai! Where the hell are you!? I’ve been waiting for you to start this raid for three hours! You better get your sorry ass over here right now before I kick ya into next week, you hear me?!”
At that, the boy’s eyes couldn’t help but flash with realization. Oh yeah, that’s right. Chuuya and him were supposed to raid a rival organization's hideout today.
You see, the thing was, that whole little plan had slipped his mind because it was so utterly unimportant to him in every possible way.
So much so, the bandaged menace lifted an eye in amusement. “Oh yeah, I decided I’m not coming! I got more important things to do. So do your best in my place, kay?”
Lifting the phone away from his ear, he then waited as Chuuya’s voice shouted straight through the speaker, peaking the audio from how close he was to the device. “Ha?! You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me! You can’t just ditch!! What the hell do you gotta do instead?!”
Dazai then put a finger up to his lips before humming back teasingly. “So nosey Chuuuya, are you jealous?”
Almost immediately, the hot headed boy replied, disgusted by the notion. “Why the fuck would I be..!
Yet that’s when the mafioso smirked before reaching forward in order to wrap his fingers around one of Asa’s crimson strains of hair hanging by her back in order to speak suggestively. “If you must know, I’m spending my day with a beautiful woman. So now you see why I can’t be there for your little raid. I’m already gonna have my hands full with something else.”
The way he spoke those words, it was like he was implying something. Like he had just found another whore to sleep with and break for his own pleasure. And although that wasn't the case this time, Dazai knew that Chuuya would make the incorrect connection for him.
And a moment later, the idiot man did just that. “You sick bastard! I swear to god I’m gonna..”
Dazai only cut him off though, satisfied with the rage he had incurred before cheerfully replying back in a devious tone. “Oops! Seems like there's a bad connection. Gotta go, Chuuya! Now go be the good dog you are and capture that organization for me! Kay, byeee!”
Then before he could interject, the brown haired mafioso quickly hung up the phone before throwing it into the grass with a large sadistic smile.
Ah, that was better. Nothing like Chuuya’s idiot thinking to snap him back to reality.
Glancing back towards the sleeping Asagao, Dazai then lifted his hands up in order to physically push her head off of his shoulder only for the girl to groan in irritation, still not awake yet.
Dazai then turned his body only for Asa’s head to fall onto his lap instead, the sudden warmth causing her to snuggle deeper only for the boy to tense at the sudden contact. Did this girl have no shame? She was just cuddling up with a murderer like nothing.
Forcing himself to relax at the contact, the man then looked at her in exasperation. Damn, this girl slept like a rock. He supposed he’d have to try something else.
Lifting his hands up, he then slipped his fingers around the large circular frames of her glasses in order to pull them off slowly with hum. “Time to wake up, sleeping beauty. Being so defenseless around a man like me, it’s not a wise decision.”
She didn’t respond though, causing the boy to then narrow his expression before pressing his forefinger straight in the middle of her forehead roughly and poke the surface only for her to finally flop her eyes open with a whine. “Samu..”
What was going on? She was so warm, so comfortable.
Hold on, why was Osamu in her dreams?
Just then, Asa then seemed to register the situation before she blinked in realization in order to propel her head off of his lap and gasp. “Osu?!”
Laughing at her confused state, Dazai  then turned his head towards the fumbling girl. “Good afternoon, sweetheart. Glad you could join us today.”
Asagao was still groggy though, the events of last night not fully registering as she placed a hand to her head. “W-What? What happened? Why was I…”
Yet Dazai was happy to cut her off, his voice coming out pained and over dramatic as he held his back with a fake little pout. “You fell asleep on me and now my back really hurts. You’re so mean, Asa-channn making me stay here like this. Owwie..It was so uncomfortable!”
It wasn’t really, but the boy wasn’t about to tell her the real reason why he had stayed complacent the whole time.  He didn’t want her to know that he had malfunctioned beyond basic human understanding.
That just the mere belief in him had caused the boy to unravel.
Asa only turned her head though, not really buying his “poor me” act in the slightest. “But you stayed here this whole time? Why didn’t you wake me up?”
Almost immediately, the girl was confused. She knew Dazai wasn’t a touchy kind of guy, so the fact that he had willingly let her sleep on his shoulder for hours wasn’t in his character. So why had he done it? Why had he allowed such a thing?
And that was the question wasn't it? Why didn’t Dazai wake up, why did such a simple yet foolish statement cause him to lose sight of reality. It was stupid, he was stupid for it. Those words didn’t even mean anything. So why was he so enamored by them all the same?
But of course, he said none of those things, his mind an impenetrable fortress as he only smiled goofily in order to cover up his own conflict. “How could I when you looked so cute?”
Asa didn’t even blink though, seeing through his facade in an instant. “I’m being serious Osu, you didn’t have to stay here for hours. You should’ve just thrown me off. I’m sure you had something important to do today.”
That’s what he should’ve done, both of them knew it. Dazai wasn’t the kind of man to just selflessly allow such a thing to happen. Usually he’d just leave them in the grass and abandon them all together.
But this time, for some reason that Asa couldn’t figure out, he stayed.
Not wanting to talk about such things anymore, Dazai then glanced towards the phone a couple inches away from him before recalling Chuuya’s pissed off reaction.
And yes, he did have something to do today but letting his partner struggle was way more fun. So maybe this wasn't so bad after all.
Because of that, the boy simply shrugged before fixing his crumbled black jacket carelessly. “Nothing interesting, but I must thank you, love. You gave me something far more entertaining in return.”
Not understanding Dazai then watched Asa bat her innocent little eyes and turn her head in return. “And what’s that?”
Already feeling his lips curve into a smug sadistic smirk, he finished cheerfully. “Why, an opportunity to mess with my favorite dog!”
In fact, Dazai could already picture the stupid dumbfounded look on Chuuya’s face when he told him that he was ditching. It was music to his ears. Now he couldn’t join the raid, not when he had already gotten such a satisfying reaction from his favorite toy.
And though Asa didn’t fully understand what he was saying, his twisted response didn’t bother her in the slightest. In fact, it was the opposite, the girl thinking he would’ve been pissed after hours of having to be her pillow.
Brushing the dirt and grass off her skirt, Asagao then pushed her feet to stand before looking out towards the bustling sounds around her. “Well, I’m glad you’re not mad but I guess I should be heading back. I already took up way too much of your time.”
After this annoying night, the only thing she wanted now was to crawl back in her bed before she died of embarrassment from drooling on her brother’s best friend's shoulder without knowing. In fact, she could already feel the heat emerging to her cheeks at the memory.
Yet that’s when Dazai paused before glancing towards the girl. “That might not be the best idea, love.”
Asagao then paused only for the mafioso to grab his phone in order to show her the message he had received just a couple minutes prior. “I had my men stake out the place and it seems like Ango is still there. If you go back now he’ll probably try to drag you back again..”
Then all at once, she felt her face fall. Oh yeah, Ango. She had forgotten about that stuck up, straight laced, government agent. Damn it, looks like she couldn’t relax like she wanted to now that he was chasing after her again.
Grumbling to herself, Asa then ran a hand across her face with frustration before shaking her head in exasperation. Just when would he give it a rest? “...Great...looks like I can’t go home after all..”
She then closed her eyes, trying her best not to show her annoyance before Asa sighed in order to turn back to the bandaged boy with a wave of her hand. “Either way, thanks again, Osu. I’ll let you get back to your illegal activities now.”
Dazai then watched her start to leave, already knowing that she was going to bumble around the city in order to kill time until Ango left. The question was, would she even make it back home with her blurry offset eyesight? Now that was to be determined.
Just then, last night's events began to play in his mind like some kind of punishment. There was her voice again, mocking him into still silence.
Osamu..I think you’re a good man.
Just great. First Odasaku was haunting him and now his sister was doing the same. Why couldn’t he get her foolish little statement out of his head?
It’s not like he was happy about it, it was just a delusion on her part after all. Although now that he thought about it, Asagao seemed to delude herself about everything.
She deluded herself by hoping that life had meaning, she deluded herself into never looking at the negatives and she deluded herself into thinking her big brother resented her even though it was not true.
But the biggest mistake she seemed to make was picking Dazai to be her constant, her unmovable tangible source of Odasaku’s life. Sure, letters were one thing, they were physical, unchanging, but him? He knew that he wasn’t reliable in that sense.
Yes, Dazai knew himself better than anyone else. He was fragile and flighty, a flicker in this pathetic life that could burn out with just a slightest blow of air. He was wavering and artificial, and the fact that she had so openly stated that he was her lifeline was something that the boy found incredibly foolish.
Because he couldn’t give her what she desired, what she needed more than anything.
She couldn’t ground herself with him, even if she wanted to.
Because Dazai didn’t want to live, he didn’t want to wake up tomorrow and carry on with this joke of a life. And one day he was sure he would succeed in his wish to finally disappear from this world entirely. It was inevitable, and yet Asagao still clung to his physical body simply because she had nothing else to prove Odasaku’s writings.
And Dazai knew she would be ruined like that, that putting such desperation into an already dead man would result in a cataclysmic detonation beyond human prescription.
Because of that, the boy felt himself move, reaching forward in order to grasp onto Asagao’s hand and pull her against his chest. “You know, since we are now both suddenly free. Why don’t we go on a date?”
Asagao only paused though, feeling the warmth from the proximity before turning to look at him in confusion. Did she just hear that right? No, it couldn’t be. “You’re asking me on a date?
Lifting his hands up with excitement, Dazai then spoke back. “Why not! My darling girlfriend has planned two of them already. I think it’s time I do the honors this time.”
And he thought Asa would jump for joy at that, although it seemed she only stared at him with disbelief, like she couldn’t comprehend what he was saying. “I didn’t think you’d care about that kinda thing..”
Pouting his lips, Dazai then jumped back from the girl in question before dramatically whining back. “How mean, Asa-chan. How could you say such hurtful things to your boyfriend like that? Did you ever think I just wanna spend some extra time with my cute girl?”
Once again though, Asa deadpanned, not buying his boy-ish act. “Not really no..”
Gasping at her blunt reply, Dazai then shoved his hand over his heart in order to hunch over like he had been shot. “Ouch. You wound me, love! I don’t know how I’ll ever recover now!”
Although that’s when Asagao simply shut her eyes before giving a heavy sigh in order to turn back to the boy with a light smile. “Osamu, I appreciate the gesture but you know you don’t have to push yourself like that for me. I’ve already bothered you enough by going past our agreement and fell asleep on your shoulder without asking. I couldn't expect more.”
At that, Dazai couldn’t help but pause. Ah, she knew he was going out of his character and pushing himself past what he would normally do. What a clever girl, picking him apart like that. He couldn’t help but admire it.
And though she was right in a sense, it wasn’t about want or not. It was more of a need. The need to give Oda’s sister something more reliable and tangible then just a sad suicidal boy like him, something that wouldn’t fade from her fingertips without warning.
Because of that, Dazai simply reached forward in order to hold onto both her hands, a new sparkle in his eyes. “Aww Asa-chan, you’re so sweet for worrying about me. My heart has been restored! And don’t worry about the agreement, just think of this little outing as a freebie!”
Asagao still didn’t seem overly convinced though, the girl trying to decipher his hidden intentions silently as Dazai smugly smiled. Oh, she was working overtime to get into his head, wasn’t she? Too bad he wasn’t going to reveal this little secret.
And just as the boy predicted. Asa was stumped. She knew he wasn’t being genuine about asking for a date, that he had some kind of plan underneath it all. Hell, the boy didn’t even care about her, that much was already established. So why all of a sudden had Dazai asked for this strange request?
She was curious, sure, but Oda’s sister still tried to stay strong, knowing she had already burdened him way too much today. Who cares if he was trying to manipulate her right now into something, their agreement was only about the letters. Nothing else.
And she had already broken that rule tonight. No, she couldn’t break it any further.
Yet that’s when Dazai lowered his eyes slowly before adding nonchalantly. “Oh, and did I forget to mention we are going somewhere that has to do with Odasaku?”
Then all at once, Asagao felt her head immediately snap back to his. Wait, he was going to take her somewhere that her brother visited? Damn it, he knew she couldn’t resist that, not when she had been searching for traces of him all throughout Yokohama.
Dazai on the other hand was smiling like a fiend, knowing that he had her right where he wanted her. From just the look on her face he knew she was squirming with conflict right now. Just the way he liked it.
A moment later, Asagao replied, her voice slightly desperate. “Where?”
The mafioso then darkened before pushing a mocking finger up to her lips in order to cut off her curiosity. “Ah ah ah, you gotta say the magic words first. Now, let’s try this again..”
Pushing his fingers away, Dazai then dipped his head down in a dramatic bow in order to lift his hand out to the girl in question, already knowing she was trapped against a metaphorical wall. “What do you say, love? Will you go on a date with me?”
And for a moment, Asagao paused, not wanting to give him the satisfaction. But the more the silence clung onto the air, the more her fingers began to fidget and twitch with the idea of finding out more about her brother.
Then all at once, her resolve faltered before muttering under her breath with embarrassment. “As long as you don’t mind..”
Yet Dazai only shook his head at the weak attempt, wiggling his fingers in front of her before humming back in dissatisfaction. “I need a yes, love.”
And then he waited, he waited for the submission that was a guarantee. Yes, Asagao was clever, she read him a million different ways but it seemed he still knew how to get what he wanted. And this time, he would win their little game.
Taking a heavy breath, Asagao then closed her eyes before lifting her hand out to the devious man in question, already knowing she had lost this round. “Yes, Osamu. I’ll go on a date with you...”
Although before her fingers could make contact with her hand, Dazai immediately closed the distance before grasping onto her hand with an excited cheer. “Yay! Now that wasn’t so hard, was it? Come on, let’s go!”
He then shifted his fingers down to her wrist before turning around in order to drag the poor girl down an uncertain path as Dazai beamed happily, pulling his tamed little puppy along the way.
And with that, he marked another tally in victory.
Dazai Osamu: 2  Oda Asagao: 1
----
Chapter 7:
Throughout her blurry uncertain vision, Asagao felt her body pulled towards the unknown as she focused on the solid black mass that had consumed her whole world. And whether he realized it or not, the girl slowly felt the outside murmurs and voice disappear into her own mind.
Because nothing else but him mattered to her.
Osamu seemed to have that effect on her every time she saw them, Asa always desperate to soak in everything about the oblivious boy regardless of the barriers in front of her eyes. His words, his actions, the way he held himself, the cadence in which he spoke, she categorized it all.
Which was why his decision to take her on this date was so odd.
Because as far as she knew, Osu wasn’t that kind of man. He was a cruel, manipulative, mafia executive that only did things out of pure entertainment or for some kind of tactical advantage.
Yes, her brother was different but Asagao knew that the blood in her veins didn’t fully protect her from Dazai’s real character.
Which was fine. She didn’t care that he was incapable of emotion and kindness. That’s not why she was here in the first place. She wasn’t that simple minded, and the last thing she wanted him to do was force himself out of that box and make him uncomfortable.
But it seemed that today he wouldn’t take no for an answer which meant that he either had some other intention with their date or he was pushing himself to do something strange for the sake of Oda.
Sighing to herself, Asagao then paused as her body collided with the mafia executive, not realizing the man had stopped completely. Oh, were they here already? She didn’t recognize this part of town.
Yet that's when she felt his fingers reach forward in order to snatch the large circular frames from her face, eradicating her safety net as Asa’s eyes widened in fear. What was he doing? She didn’t want to see the world right now. “O-Osam..”
Although before she could protest, Dazai replaced the object with his hands, pushing her back against his chest in order to darken her surroundings before she could have time to process them.
Then she heard his voice, sharp against her ear. “You’ll want to fully see this, love.”
Fully see it? No, that was impossible. She didn’t want to see anything, she didn’t want to decipher anything fully. Then she would see the darkness, she would see the cracks in the perfect facade that life displayed.
Dazai seemed to sense her distress though, his tone teasing as his fingers pressed deeper across her eyes to show her that they weren’t going anywhere. “What’s wrong, don’t trust your boyfriend? Afraid I’m going to hurt you while you’re defenseless like this?”
He was trying to scare her, to intimate her per usual. But if he thought that she was going to crumble between his fingers then he was sorely mistaken. “You know that’s not why..it’s just..my eyes..”
Asa then heard him laugh in pure amusement before his bandaged arm brushed against hers in order to lift the surface and place it on an unknown doorknob in front of them. “Don’t worry, darling. I got you.”
Did that mean he was going to keep her eyes covered for her until they got to where he wanted her to see? But what if he slipped up, what if he let go accidentally or for some kind of joke? What he was asking for required a lot of trust, trust from a boy that thrived on sadistic games.
But even so, Asa complied, her fingers turning open the door as Dazai urged her forward in order for her breath to lodge inside her throat with each step. She had nothing to guide her, nothing but his body to rely on.
Just then, his fingers found her wrist before lifting them up in order for her to register a railing as the mafioso hummed back into her ear. “Count the steps, love. There are twenty of them.”
And so she did, the girl gripping around the railing for dear life as she counted each invisible step in her mind, careful not to trip as her back brushed against Dazai’s body in order to ground herself.
Finally reaching the bottom, Asagao then sighed in relief only to hear him speak once again, the sound causing shivers to run down her spine. “Good girl, here’s your reward.”
Yet that’s when she felt the safety of his fingers start to disappear from her eyes, causing Asa to gap in horror. Wait, what was he doing? He hadn’t given her glasses back. Was he serious about her seeing this place with her eyes? No, that was too scary.
Blinding lights then filled her vision, causing the girl to squint before she couldn’t help but freeze at the very sight before her. And in a millisecond, she seemed to forget her own rule about viewing things from a blurry lens.
Because staring back at her was a small cozy little bar, the atmosphere warm and secluded with rows of stools and the smell of liquor wafting through the air.
Wait, she had seen this place before.
Aggressively shoving her hands into her pockets, Asagao then pulled out the picture that Dazai had shown her last night before her eyes couldn’t help but widen with realization in order to lift the photo in front of the place slightly.
Her assumption was right, it was a perfect match.
Feeling any response fall silent in her throat, Oda’s sister whispered. “Is this…”
Dazai finished for her, his hands in his pockets as he looked at the place in nostalgic sadness. “Bar Lupin, where the picture was taken.”
And almost immediately, Asagao felt her throat fill with emotion in order for her vision to blur with tears only for her to immediately blink them away.
No, she didn’t want to only see the blurry picture of this place. She needed it to be real, to soak in every nook and cranny into it was permanently etched in her mind.
Now she knew what Dazai had meant by saying she would have wanted to fully see this place without the barriers of her glasses. He was right, he was so incredibly right. This feeling, these physical floorboards under her feet. They felt so real.
Her big brother had stood in this same exact spot, he had breathed in the same air and had seen the same view.
Sure, she had been living in his old apartment for some time but Asagao had no proof that he had ever inhabited the place.
But with the photograph between her fingers, Asagao knew that her mind wasn’t playing tricks on her. Oda was here, and now so was she. The idea was so simplistic and yet it brought her so much joy, her hands unable to stop the shake and smile towards the empty bar.
Then she turned to the supposedly heartless mafioso before speaking through her tears. “Osamu, this is..thank you..I’m so happy..”
So this is what he was trying to show her? He must have gotten the idea after hearing her outburst to Ango about not having anything but Osamu to cling to. How sweet, he knew she needed this more than anything.
He always tried to act so scary but he really was like this, huh?
Dazai on the other hand stared at the empty place in silence as a mix of grief and familiar comfort coursed through him all at once. He had promised himself that he wouldn’t come back after Odasaku's death, and yet here he was all the same.
The memories, the feelings were all so suffocating, he wished he never felt them in the first place. But this was the only place that Dazai knew Odasaku in, this was the only place that he could give Asagao. Because of that, he had gone against his own wishes.
At least this place wouldn’t fade like himself, and that was enough for Dazai.
That’s right, now when Dazai finally succeeded to die, when he left this world he knew that she could wallow her sorrows here, she could find her big brother in these walls.
Now the boy wasn’t the only physical tie to Odasaku she had.
Yeah, now he could die with peace again without the guilt of destroying the last piece of his best friend that resided in this shitty little life. Did that make him a good person? He wasn’t sure but this was something he felt like he had to do.
For Odasaku, and for his precious little sister that the man had left in his fingers.
Closing his eyes, Dazai then tried to wash away the feeling before settling into his usual seat by the bar in order to wave over the girl in question. “Let’s have a drink, love.”
He then watched as she complied immediately, slipping into the stool beside him only for an unpleasant deja vu to fill his throat. Without her glasses she looked even more like Odasaku, especially from this angle.
The bartender turned to him immediately, his tone plain. “What will it be, Dazai?”
Tapping his fingers onto the top of the table, the mafioso already knew the answer. “Whiskey.”
Then the boy turned his gaze towards Oda’s sister only to rest his head on the palm of his hand with a slight tease. “Well, what about you, darling? Don’t worry, they have apple juice.”
He didn’t expect her to actually drink alcohol of course. She was just a fifteen year old girl, hardly old enough for liquor.
And hey, so was he but being in the mafia gave him a free pass. Besides, considering his other crimes, underage drinking was pretty low on the list of immoral behavior.
Yet that’s when Asa pushed her lips together cutely before pushing her hand up in order to shield her hollow eyes and reply to the bartender. “Make that a double, please..”
At that, Dazai couldn’t help but raise an eye, not expecting her response.“Ooooh, I’m impressed. But your brother would’ve had a heart attack hearing that.”
And he really would have. In fact, Dazai knew Odasaku would’ve definitely shut down Asagao's request for alcohol. Unlucky for her though, the boy wasn’t that considerate about laws and such.
What could he say? Ango was right, he was a bad influence.
Two amber colored drinks then slid into view as Asagao lightly traced her finger around the rim with a hum. “Would he? Then he better not find out that I started years ago.”
Years ago, huh? Perhaps Asagao wasn’t as good of a girl as he once thought. “How scandalous, Asa-chan. Should I tell Ango about that?”
At that, he watched her scrunch her nose up in disgust. “And what about you, Osu? You’re the same age as me.”
Dazai only hummed though, knowing it wasn’t the same. “I’m also a criminal, love.”
Asagao was silent, like she was processing the words before she threw the entire drink into the back of her throat before whispering bitterly. “Yeah well, so was I.”
The words were so small and yet Dazai heard every symbol before curiosity and intrigue couldn’t help but take up his entire throat. Now why did she have to say something like that? Now he wanted to pry into her mind and pull out an answer.
And there were many ways to do it, but none of them were savory in any way. You see, Dazai was skilled in manipulation and exploitation. He could seduce and coax even the strongest willed people.
So trying to make Asagao talk about her life was as simple as blinking for him.
It didn't matter if she seemed bothered when Ango brought it up last night. He’d get her to talk about it one way or another.
Lifting his hand up excitedly, Dazai than beamed towards the bartender before waving. “Two more!”
And as two more sets of liquor appeared in his vision, the boy simply slid them over to Asa with a fake innocence and a smile. “Go ahead, Asa-chan. And don’t worry about the price, it’s on me.”
He then watched Asagao look down at the new glass before picking up the object between her fingers.
And for a moment, Dazai thought he had succeeded in his bribe.
Although that’s when the girl simply closed her eyes before speaking into the glass plainly. “You know, Osamu. You don’t have to get me drunk. I’ll answer any question you want.”
At that, Dazai felt himself pause before his smile dropped all at once in order for him to change into his true cruel nature.
Ah, he should’ve figured it wasn’t gonna be that easy to coax her into his plans. He still wasn’t used to that, having someone that could read him almost instantly like a book.
Although that’s when he truly processed her words. Wait, did she just say that he could’ve just asked her about her life? Interesting, Dazai had never had that before. Usually they shut him down and he had to resort to dirty tactics.
How refreshing and yet utterly stupid on her part to open up to a man like him
Parting his lips to reply, he then watched as Asagao quickly downed the two drinks he had given her anyways, causing his eyes to flash with confusion.
Hold on, she had already figured out his plans to get her drunk and yet she was still going along with that anyways? What a strange girl. He thought she’d just push the glasses away.
And with no answer to his intrigues, Dazai couldn’t help but speak back. “Then why are you still accepting it?”
Pushing the glasses down from her lips, he then watched as Asagao paused before answering with a small smile. “Cause if you think I should be drunk for this conversion then I figured I should take you up on that offer.”
She still wasn’t looking at him though, and Dazai concluded it was because she still felt uncomfortable because he hadn’t given her glasses back yet. It’s not like he minded though. She was really cute when she hid her face like that, all shy and meek.
So instead, the boy didn’t speak about it, watching her call for another round of drinks before Dazai started his interrogation now that there was a rosy pink color to her cheeks. “Ango called you a hellhound. ”
Almost immediately, Asa laughed under her breath before swirling the drink between her fingers. “Ah, so that’s what it is. You were right to order those drinks.”
Dazai then watched as the girl threw back another shot before speaking distantly, like she was wrapping herself in some sort of memory. “The Hellhounds are an elite level of assassins, brought up from birth to be the perfect tools to those that hold their leash. Oda and I were orphans that were brought up into the same faction but because of my different way I saw the world,I was chosen as a candidate to be a hellhound.”
Smiling bitterly, Asa then lifted a finger up to her throat before ghosting across the skin. “By age five I knew how to run a knife across someone's throat and put a bullet in their brain without them knowing. My ability allowed quick, precise and clean kills. You could say I was a bit of a prodigy, just like you are.”
She then pushed, her face falling with unpleasant memories. “But the training..was intense...”
And as Dazai listened to her explanation things started to make sense. He didn’t know much about Odasaku before he joined the port mafia. He knew he was a freelance assassin but that’s about it. It made sense that he got those skills from somewhere.
But try as he may, he couldn’t see sweet little Asagao as a bloodthirsty prodigy like he was. Sure, she had fought him before but the girl never seemed to intend to kill.
Unless she was holding back on him this entire time.
 Ah, what a sneaky little princess. So hypocritical to tease him about playing around with her when she was clearly doing the same thing. She threw that gun away on purpose and limited her ability use during their fight to make it seem like he had the advantage.
Now he wanted to fight her for real to see just how scary she could really be.
Turning his head in curiosity, Dazai then pointed his finger towards her distant expression. “Is that how those pretty little eyes of yours became so hollow and empty?”
He then watched as she clutched the empty glass between her fingers before the mafioso silently slid the rest of his drink over to her only for Asa to accept it gratefully.
Damn, the answer to that question must’ve really been traumatic given that she needed more alcohol in response.
And though most men would’ve changed the subject, Dazai only let her compose herself, silently watching as she closed her eyes before replying. “They made me see the darkest part of the world, they waterboarded me, disoriented me and then forced me to analyze every single depravity that the human mind could conjure up. It wasn’t for the weak of heart and… it broke something in me permanently...”
Then before she could process it, memories and past feelings couldn’t help but creep up her spine. They were blurry and out of order but Asa got enough to know that her time as a hellhound wasn’t the most pleasant.
Even now, she could feel the sharp cold chill of the icy tub as her ears drowned out any semblance of noise only to be assaulted with fingers on her face in order to scream at her to analyze the situation before her. She felt the blinding feeling of pepper spray in her eyes and blows to her head as she tried to answer the prompts that her captives had given her.
She even felt the lingering sensation of cloth around her eyes as they plunged her into pitch black darkness for months on end only to blind her with bright lights and disorient her further.
Her spine then began to shiver before forcing her eyes back open in order to blankly stare at the amber colored liquid in front of her. “I can’t turn it off anymore, I can’t help but see every fucked up corner of people’s intentions. My eyes catch every spec of darkness, every disappointment. So much so that it hurt to see, still does. I hate it, this thing they made me into..”
And that was the thing she hated more than anything. It wasn’t that those people had molded her into a robotic mold of their perception. It wasn’t that they essentially tortured her into their own design.
It was the fact that she was now permanently damaged, doomed to live the rest of her life in a sacred manner. She couldn’t look at the world anymore without seeing the bad. She couldn’t escape the sharp headaches and nauseous feelings in her chest just by wishing she was any semblance of normal.
Some days she even thought about ripping her own eyes out of her sockets, to perfectly gouge them out and blind herself so that she didn’t have to perceive anything ever again.
Forcing herself to carry on, Asagao finished robotically. “But one day my body couldn’t keep up. They left me to die because I was no longer sufficient and Oda found me. Then he faked my death, hid me away, gave me my glasses so I didn’t have to see anymore and became an assassin in my place.”
At that, Dazai felt his fingers slip into his pockets before feeling the metal of her glasses in order to pull out the object and place them on the table.
He had taken them for her benefit but now that the boy knew the full story of such insignificant objects, it didn’t seem right to withhold them anymore from her.
Sure, Asa had vaguely told him about the reasons for her glasses but now that the details were all laid out, Dazai couldn’t help but look at her with a new light.
These lenses weren’t just a preference, they were a necessity to her.
She needed them just like Dazai needed his bandages, and that was something the fifteen year old boy could understand quite well.
 It seemed like they had more in common than he originally thought.
The girl accepted the glasses immediately, her fingers wrapping around the objects before placing the safe guard around her eyes before smiling softly in return. “And now, I’m free, my big brother gave me freedom.”
Freedom? The term was incomprehensible for the young boy. What did that feel like, to be free? To not be tied down by the darkness of the past? He didn’t know.
Just then, Dazai’s mind filled with that same twisted mindset he had come to know. What a stupid girl, she was talking about freedom when she was sitting next to one of the most dangerous men in Yokohama.
She had just dangled her skills and past resume in front of his face so carelessly.
Swirling his finger around the rim of his drink, the mafioso threatened back. “Shouldn’t you be a little more cautious about telling me all of this so easily? I am the demon prodigy after all. I could force you back into that life..”
And he could. If he really wanted to, Dazai knew he could pull her into the port mafia and use her talents for his own selfish desires. She had to have known that.
But then why was she just spilling such dangerous secrets so easily?
Asagao only hummed though, his threat leaving her unshaken. “Hypothetically yes, and I’m sure you’ve thought about it at least once or twice. I’m a tempting offer after all. Any executive would jump at the chance to use me..”
Then he watched as Asa narrowed her eyes for a moment before adding lightly. “But unlike what Ango believes, I know you won’t actually do it.”
Wouldn’t actually do it? Now that was a bold statement. He wondered what proof she had for that. “And why is that, love?”
Although that’s when Oda’s sister turned her body towards him for the first time since their conversation in order to speak with a victorious tease. “Cause it’s not what Oda would’ve wanted.”
At that, Dazai felt his lips curve into a bitter smile. Ah, she was right. She knew that Odasaku’s blood in her veins was keeping her safe. It was almost like she was rubbing that little detail in his face. Low blow.
For as dark and twisted as his mind was, Dazai knew that Odasaku had spent years trying to keep his little sister safe. Sure, having her in the port mafia would be a great benefit, but it would also ruin everything his best friend had ever worked for.
And that was something Dazai couldn’t do, no matter how evil he claimed to be.
Feeling himself laugh under his breath at her correct assumption, the boy then turned his head, playing devil's advocate just for the hell of it. “And let’s just say I didn’t care about that. What would you do then?”
Asagao then paused, thinking about his question before answering back with confidence. “Then I would let you drag me into the port mafia. But the only orders that I'd ever answer and respect would be yours.”
Dazai was certainly taken back by that. Was she serious? He knew her dedication to him was rather irrational but would she seriously put herself back in the darkness for his sake? Would she really disobey her big brother's last request that easily?
Trying out to laugh off her foolish joke, the boy pushed his hand under his chin before teasing sensually. “I’m flattered, love. So you would be my loyal subordinate then?”
But there was no hesitation or humor in her response. Only straight laced honesty. “Yeah, cause I need you by my side in order to see my big brother. Subordinate, girlfriend, they are just titles. An excuse, a way to keep each other around. In the end it doesn't matter what I’m called as long as I have you in my life.”
And try as he may, Dazai couldn’t help the bitter, unpleasant taste that built up in his throat. No, she wasn’t serious. There was no way. Her admiration, her desperation to find her brother, would she really have gone that far just for Oda’s sake?
He hated it, he hated the very little self respect she displayed, knowing that Odasaku would’ve also been horrified by what she was saying. She didn’t need Dazai in her life. Hell, her life would’ve been so much better without even knowing him.
And he knew that their titles of boyfriend and girlfriend were a sham but he never thought it would go this deep, that she would so desperately grab onto whatever excuse she could find in order to connect the two of them together.
Because of that, Dazai felt his mind run wild with possibilities.
In another reality, if that actually happened, if he had dragged Asagao back then did that also mean that Oda’s sister would’ve killed for him? Would she have snapped back to her old ways just in order to please him, to give him a reason to keep her around?
Didn’t she know how dangerous that was?
How could she possibly give a demon like him that much power to abuse?
Stretching her arms up in the air, Asagao then gave a goofy smile before beaming towards the boy all at once. “Like I said, it doesn’t matter what we call ourselves. In any universe or reality it would still be the same. You’re not getting rid of me anytime soon, Osu!”
She said that so proudly, so confidently that Dazai couldn’t help but allow his eyes to fall back on his drink. How could she be so passionate about him? He was a mess in every possible way. No one wanted to hang around him, and for good reason.
Their lives were so similar, both filled with horrors and brutal truths, and yet Asagao always wore a smile while he drowned in the pointlessness of it all. How could she do it? How could she feel so free when he was still chained by his own mind even today.
Because of that, Dazai felt his own tipsy lips move without permission, whispering into his glass with a sadness he rarely let free. “After seeing all that evil, how can you not want to die like me?”
And then he waited for her response, his shoulders tense and anxious from the sudden spilled murmur before Asagao lifted her head up in silent thought. “Mmm I don’t know. By all aspects that should be the case, right? But I’ve never felt that way, not once..”
Then her lips formed a lighthearted smile in return. “I guess it’s because I’m waiting for life to pleasantly surprise me. Just like you do, Samu.”
At that, Dazai lifted his head up in confusion. “How have I surprised you?”
Pushing her hands across the bar in explanation, Asa then replied lightly. “Well, you showed me this place to make me feel better, right? Even though I’m sure it brought back unpleasant memories, you still took me here for my sake..”
And Asagao knew that Dazai could act all he wanted but he had shown his true colors tonight. Sure, he may have used an underhanded tactic to bring her here but he had knowingly done the one thing she needed more than anything else.
Dazai though, didn’t feel the same way, knowing this date wasn’t as pure as she was making it out to be. The only reason he brought her here was to shift her devotion and admiration to something else, something more permanent than a dead man walking.
Pushing his hand up to his lips, the boy frowned under the skin. “Did it ever cross your mind that my reasons were selfish?”
And for a moment he thought she’d be disappointed, that she’d yell at him or cry once she realized the fabrication he had set up to make himself feel better.
Although that's when he watched the girl turn to him, her hand to her heart in absolute passion. “So what? Selfish and selfless, those are just small details. The results are the same. Doesn’t change the fact that you gave me such a precious gift..”
Lifting her hand to rest against her head, Asagao then gave the stunned boy a toothy smile of glee before adding wistfully. “But then again, nothing could ever be as precious as you, Dazai Osamu.”
And with those words, Dazai’s eyes widened in order to find himself slipping back into the very same malfunction that had plagued him just a couple hours ago.
Precious?
Him? There was no way. He was just a pathetically depressed kid. He wasn’t anyone, especially anyone precious. She was the precious one, she was Odasaku’s beloved sister and he was..well..he was nothing of value..
So much so, the boy tried to wipe the compliment away, not knowing how to take it. “You’re drunk, love.”
He then watched as Asagao’s lips turned into an adorable little pout in order to whine back to him through her rosy pink cheeks. “Whaaa, am not! I was being serious! I really do think you’re precious to me, even if you don’t feel the same. And anyways, It takes a lot more than..one..two..three..a bit of booze to knock me down!”
Dazai then watched as the red haired girl looked down at her fingers before failing to count the number of drinks she had ingested only for the boy to snicker under his breath.
Oh yeah, she was definitely drunk.
So much so, the boy lifted his hand up before patting the top of her head like a little puppy in order to break her concentration. “Careful, sweetheart. You’re gonna burst a blood vessel if you think that hard.”
Seemingly jumping back to life, Asa then lifted her finger in the air. “The point is..!”
Her eyes then began to daze in order to slowly drop her head with confusion. “What was the point again..”
Yet before Dazai could answer, Asagao was back at it, her expression changing back to one of passion in order to lean closer on her stool. “Oh yeah! The point is, why would I wanna die when there are still so many opportunities for the world to be beautiful? I don’t wanna miss one by giving up so soon..”
Leaning even closer, the girl then gasped as she slid out of the stool completely only for Dazai’s strong bandaged arms to catch her before she hit the ground.
Asagao didn’t seem to care though, her eyes showing through her glasses in order to lift her finger up and boop his nose with a slight giggle. “And neither should you, love”
Then the girl seemed to gasp in excitement before completely slipping out of his arms in order to turn to the small radio next to the counter. “Ah! I love this song! Turn it up Mr. Bartender!”
Skipping over to the open area, Asagao then began to bounce and dance to the song in child-ish glee only for Dazai’s eyes to travel down to the hands that once held her before balling his fists with a bitter chuckle.
What was she saying? He shouldn’t give up on life? Foolish girl, he gave up a long time ago. It was too late for those kinds of words. She should’ve known that.
How dare she put such pointless and toxic thoughts inside his head like that.
Lifting his head to look up at the carefree girl, the mafioso then watched in stunned silence as she twirled and giggled across the bar without a care in the world.
She looked so free like this, so unchained and open. He wondered how it felt, to radiate such genuine happiness and to be unequivocally herself. Because Dazai had never felt happy, not in that kind of way.
He used happiness as a tool, as a mask to further his manipulation. He knew the concept, sure, but actually conceptualizing such a thing? He had realized from a young age that it was impossible for someone as broken like him.
But Oda’s sister, she seemed to radiate the emotion with her entire soul, she knew the wonder and mystery of it. And Dazai couldn’t help but be jealous of such a fact, knowing he would never experience such a human emotion to the level that she was.
That’s when his eyes couldn’t help but flash with painstaking realization.
Oh, he had it wrong this entire time, didn’t he? Dazai had connected the similarities between their backstories, their intelligence, their manipulation and their necessity for his bandages and her glasses.
But looking at her now, the boy knew they weren’t anything alike.
In many ways Asagao was like a sun, her light always exuding positivity and hope with every response. She was unreachable, a fragile yet strong flower that was just barely out of reach in every possible way.
And Dazai, well he was a black hole, unable to find anything of value but the darkness that always consumed every part of his twisted fucked up soul. And while she was unreachable, he was a ghost, flickering in and out of this life, unable to touch anything or anyone.
They shared so many similarities and yet Asagao still saw the good, she saw the very best the world could offer while Dazai couldn’t even find one beneficial thing around him.
He almost wished that they didn’t weren’t so alike, simply because then the boy could excuse their lives as plain nativity on her part.
That’s what he thought all that positive bullshit came from in the first place, thinking that she was just a spoiled and sheltered girl that Odasaku had protected.
But she wasn’t, she had seen just as much evil and pain as Dazai had. And yet, her responses were so vastly different. She had managed to keep her humanity while the boy had descended into a full blown monster.
And Dazai would be lying to say he wasn’t both incredibly jealous and yet so genuinely intrigued by her in every way.
No, that wasn’t the right word.
He was enamored, he admired her resolve more than anything else. What a beautiful, enthralling sight. It was intoxicating, and enchanting in every way, seeing how she defied the corruption of the universe.
Although that’s when the bartender interrupted his thoughts, his eyes also gazed towards Asagao in question. “Dazai, who is that woman?”
Shifting his body to rest his back against the bar, Dazai then smiled to himself before answering honestly. “She’s Odasaku’s sister.”
The bartender then felt himself freeze before looking at the girl in a whole new light. “I can see it.”
Lowering his eyes in admiration, Dazai then felt his lips curve a bit wider. Ah, she’d be so happy to hear that. “Me too.”
And he really did, he saw Odasaku in her so clearly, especially now. It was in her carefree attitude, it was in the sense of unbothered calm she always had when she was around him. If only Asa realized just how much she brought her big brother to life by just merely existing.
Lifting his head to the sky, the boy then closed his eyes in order to speak to his old friend. Oh Odasaku, why did you give me to your sister like this? Don’t you see I’m no good for her? Did you really trust me not to corrupt her?
Yet that’s when he heard another voice enter his mind only to watch a drunken man try to make his way up to Asa only for Dazai to darken his eyes in order to quickly jump off his stool and lift an arm out to the girl in question.
Asa then felt his bandaged arms wrapped around her waist a second later, pulling her into his chest only for the girl to look up in her drunken daze. “S-Samu?”
She was then met with his endless brown gaze, staring at her in order to slip his hand into hers with a light chuckle. “Can’t leave my girl hanging, now can I?”
Feeling his head tilt towards the unwelcome presence, Dazai then pushed her body closer to him before glaring wordless in silent threat for the depravity that lay behind the drunken man's eyes.
The stranger then stumbled away in order for the mafioso to hum in acceptance before his hands traveled to his “girlfriend’s” hips as she hummed to the music. “Didn’t think the great executive liked to dance.”
Smiling under his breath, Dazai lowered his head, meeting her eyes. “What can I say, you’ve inspired me.”
Yet that's when Asagao’s lips turned into a frown before turning away from his gaze with a mutter. “What am I gonna do, Osu? I can’t go home..Ango is gonna say annoying things again..”
At the mention of Ango, Dazai felt his throat tick with unpleasant memories. Ah, that’s right. Ango was still staking out her place, hoping she’d come back. Well, it wasn’t like she could show up drunk either, then he’d really have a conniption.
But it also wasn’t as if he could let the clumsy glasses-wearing girl out free in Yokohama. She couldn’t even find where she was going sober, which meant she definitely wasn’t going to be okay like this.
Which only left one option left.
Asagao then felt his lips brush against her ear before she heard Dazai’s next words, the meaning causing her entire body to shiver and her eyes to widen all at once.
“If you really have nowhere to go then how about you come to my place, sweetheart?”

Ashrym Week Day 2: Been a While
They don't like the unsteady way that Orym is stumbling away from the battle. “Hey, you need a hand? Let me call F.C.G.”
Orym shakes his head. “I don’t think they got a hit in.” And after a quick circuit around the halfling, Ashton has to agree; he doesn't have a scratch on him. “I guess it’s just been a long day, we could all use some dinner and some sleep.”
Despite his request for dinner, Orym only picks at his meal before starting to nod off in his seat. “Hey . ” Ashton reaches out to give him a shake, and it ' s only then that they notice the heat radiating from Orym’s body. Shit. He wouldn ’t normally do this, but he scoop s Orym into his arms to carry upstairs.
“Hey, you should get out of that armor,” Ashton mutter once they manage to settle Orym onto the bed, not wanting to take the initiative on that front.
He still end s up having to help out a bit, or a lot, as Orym clumsily struggl es with the buckles. But eventually they manage to get Orym stripped down to his smallclothes and tucked under the bedsheets. “I’m going to get you some water.”
Ashton returned with a full pitcher and a towel, managing to rouse Orym enough to drink before filling the basin and laying the damp towel across Orym ’s forehead. F.C.G. had told him they could try to cure the illness, but it would have to wait until morning, so all Ashton could do now was try to bring his temperature down.
He sleeps fitfully, sitting with his back against the bed frame, jerking awake every so often to freshen the cloth on Orym ’s brow. Eventually, they’re awakened by the squeak of F.C.G.’s wheel as he scoots through the door. They place a hand on Orym, and Ashton sees a faint pulse of blue light, just for a moment before it fizzles away.
“Any luck?” F.C.G.’s magic has been tricky lately; they’d reported themself that the Changebringer was becoming harder and harder to reach, and Ashton isn't sure if the spell actually took hold.
“I don’t know. I felt something, but I think he might need to get better on his own.”
Ashton look s at Orym now, and put s a hand on his shoulder, and the sheen of sweat tells him that the fever has broken, at least.
Orym stirs at the touch, and a soft smile spread s across his face as he meets Ashton ’s eyes. “Hey, Ash. What’re you doing here?”
“Keeping an eye on you; you were pretty out of it last night. How’re you feeling?”
“Like something big and nasty just pounded me into the ground. But I’ll manage.” He moves to sit up, but it barely takes any pressure from Ashton to keep him in bed.
“You need to rest. You’ve got the flu or something, we're gonna hole up here until you’re better.”
“There’s no time.” But Orym’s words lack the steel Ashton would have expected from the statement and Ashton can tell that he’s fighting himself more than anything. “You should go, then. Don’t want you to get sick, too.”
“Nah.” Ashton let a smile creep across his face. “Thing about being made of rock, it’s surprisingly disease resistant. I’ve barely gotten a cold since I changed.”
“Still, you shouldn’t have to be stuck here…”
“Hey.” Orym was sounding an awful lot like… them, Ashton realized. “When’s the last time you let someone take care of you?”
“A while,” Orym admits quietly. “Will. Although I probably took care of him more; he was such a baby when he got sick.”
“And no one after? Because I’ve met your mom and I refuse to believe that.” Ashton knew what it was to lose the most important people in their world. Granted he’d lost a lot more than that, but still.
“That’s not the same. I didn’t need—”
“What, because you wouldn’t have straight up died otherwise? Because you were technically physically capable? Because I’ve had more than my share of days I didn’t want to get out of bed, and it wasn’t from the pain. Now, I'm gonna find you something to eat. Assuming you're feeling up to it."
"Yeah. I could eat." And a long silence hangs in the air until Orym's next words follow them out the door. "Thanks, Ash."

Gen V and the V is for Vendetta Pt. 2
After the 15 minute walk back to the dorms from dusties the group parted ways. Marie accompanied Jordan to their room and just as they entered the room, door barely closed all the way Marie spun around in a fury.
“Jordan what the fuck was that?!” She asks.
“What the fuck was what Marie? Is it a crime to stand up and protect your girlfriend now? I’m so sorry for breaking the law. sad face mean it.” jordan says sarcastically.
Marie was annoyed by the earlier altercation but Jordan’s smart ass remarks were actually enraging her now.
“Jordan you don’t think about the consequences you can face. He is the deans son first off and second you know he pushes your buttons to get any kind of reaction in hopes to ruin your ranking and third you didn’t let me get a word in. I appreciate your need to protect me. It goes both ways but there are some battles you and I can fight ourselves.” Marie stated irritated.
Jordan stumbles “I-I know Marie I’m-“
“You’re what?!” Marie raised her voice from frustration.
“Jesus Christ Marie I’m sorry ok! You’re right but the way he was degrading you just sent me to another level. I couldn’t even think straight I was so fucking pissed.” Jordan confesses.
Marie sighs “I get it but he is my partner on a project. He’s someone I am going to have to work with. That should’ve been my moment to set him straight and lay down boundaries.”
“You’re right ok. I’m waving the white flag. I lost my temper and I need to do better.” Jordan says.
“Thank you that’s all I wanted.” Marie says reaching out to pull Jordan in for a hug.
Marie’s hands wrap around Jordan’s wider physical form and she rests her head under their chin.
Jordan pulled her in tighter and kissed the top of her head.
After a few beats of silence they ask “So does that mean we’re going to see him multiple days this week?”
Marie leans back and looks up to see Jordan’s head tilted to the side like they’re contemplating what days they have available to tag along.
“NO! You two literally just tried to kill each other. You need to be 100 feet apart at all times and I need you to trust me.” Marie says softly leaning in pressing her lips quickly to Jordan’s.
Jordan breaks the kiss professing  “I do trust you. I have 100% faith in you but unfortunately it’s the entitled asshole I don’t trust.”
“Well do you want me to tell him the legendary story of how Rufus has to piss sitting down now?” Marie says grinning ear to ear.
“I’m going to be like hey! back off before that becomes you!” Marie says jokingly while lifting her hands in a defense position.
Jordan chuckles then pulls Marie in to whisper between kisses into her forehead and cheeks “you’re the most sweetest, prettiest, badass girl I’ve ever met. I don’t know how I got so lucky Moreau.”
~~~~
The next day Jordan woke up missing the presence of Marie next to them. They had rolled over and saw the sticky note Marie left on their pillow.
Hey sleepy head. Left early this morning for class. Miss you already! Meet for coffee at 11? Text me if that works 🖤 marie
Jordan couldn’t help but reread the note again with the dopiest smile. they then heard the pinging of their phone. Grabbing the vought phone they see it’s a message from cate.
Cate: Hey. Talk after our crime fighting class k. Don’t try to book it!
Greattttt they forgot about her wanting a talk with them about last nights shenanigans too.
Jordan rolled their eyes as they went through their closet focused on dressing their smaller frame. Ugh todays going to be a long one.
~~~~
Just as crime fighting let out cate had already caught Jordan before they could even leave the class.
“Ready for that talk?” cate asked surprisingly chipper.
“No” Jordan responded shortly.
“Well too damn bad. We can talk and walk.” Cate said.
As they take off into the narrow hallways Jordan sighs “whatever you’re going to say Moreau probably already beat you to it ok. I’m short tempered, It was her fight not mine, and be smarter about where I beat the dean’s son’s ass.”
“I almost agreed til the last part.” Cate grinned.
“Ok that wasn’t exactly what she said but how I would say it.” Jordan laughed.
“Jordan if I wasn’t there you could have got into serious trouble and honestly we potentially still could if his memory starts to come back or we missed erasing someone’s phone. You’re number 2. Telling you to be smarter is the nicest way of putting it. Don’t jeopardize your future because of jealousy or insecurity or whatever the hell it is. Ok?” Cate says with a serious tone.
“Yeah ok you’re right. It’s just I’ve never felt like this with anyone other than Marie. She gets everything about me and accepts me for me and well to be honest I can’t stand the thought of anyone disrespecting her or threatening what we have especially that little shit.” Jordan says releasing a deep sigh.
“Don’t tell Andre or Luke about this talk either.” Jordan sternly says. “I’m serious.”
“Ok ok no need to get worked up because Jordan Li s finally wearing their heart on their sleeve.” Cate teased. “I won’t tell a soul scouts honor.”
“You weren’t even a fucking Girl Scout.” Jordan says rolling their eyes with a grin as they walk off from cate to go meet Marie at jitterbean.
~~~~
As Jordan rounds the corner to get to jitterbean they immediately spot Marie in khaki cargo pants with a tan crop top and her locs in a half up half down style. Jordan could feel that stupid grin spreading on their face at the sight of her. The grin disappeared almost as fast as it had materialized when they realized who was next to her talking it up. Fucking Daxton. Jordan had to do a quick breathe in breathe out and remind themselves that Daxton doesn’t even remember the altercation they got in at Dustie’s. It still doesn’t help that they know he admitted he wants Marie but who wouldn’t she’s legit the hottest girl on campus, no scratch that in the world. Jordan releases a deep sigh remembering they promised Marie and Cate they would be on their best behavior with this world class jackass.
Jordan pastes the biggest fakest smile as they approach “Heyyyyy babe.” They say as they approach Marie and give her a kiss on the cheek. They side eye Daxton and leave it at that.
“Nice to see you too jordan.” Daxton says sarcastically.
“Heyyyy Daxton saw me in line and came over to ask about us scheduling times to meet. Glad I have a partner who doesn’t play about school work.” Marie says as fast as she can trying to cut the tension.
Before either one can reply Marie hurriedly says “But Daxton yes the library tonight at 6 works for me. I’ll see you then.”
Daxton’s eyebrows raise at the dismal. “Ok cool can’t wait for our study date.” He says smugly looking at Jordan before turning on his heels and heading off.
Jordan grits their teeth and involuntarily clenches their fist in annoyance.
“IT’S NOT A DATE GROW UP!” Marie exasperatedly shouts. “Jordan ignore him. He doesn’t remember the fight or anything he’s just being an ass.”
“Are you sure you don’t want me to come with you? I don’t want him to make you feel uncomfortable or anything.” Jordan asks before pulling Marie in for a hug.
Marie returns the hug pulling Jordan’s more petite frame in tighter and giving a quick peck while trying to ignore the bystander’s who pulled out their phones to capture the moment.
“I’ll be ok weirdly he only acts like this when you’re around. I genuinely don’t believe he’s into me. I think it’s just to get under your skin and unfortunately he can tell it’s working.” Marie sighs.
“Marie I think you’re being a little naive on this one. The way he looked at you at the party was full of desire like the creepy guy at a gas station kind of desire. So fuck yeah it’s a little alarming.” Jordan says frowning.
“I don’t think I am and I can handle it. Ok?” Marie asks while nuzzling Jordan’s nose.
“Alright.” Jordan responded less enthusiastically.
MarieJordan  your order is up!
Marie leads Jordan with intertwined hands to grab their orders.
“I’m glad I got to see you before my next class” Marie says leaning in for a kiss.
 Jordan met halfway lips full of longing and want for this moment to never end.
Marie broke apart “ok I’ll probably see you tonight after my library session with Daxton.“
Jordan rolled their eyes “I’m serious babe if he steps one foot out of line let me know.”
Marie yells “I will! Promise!” As she turns to head to her next class.
~~~~~
It was 6:10pm. Marie had already found a table in the quiet section of the library and laid the notes for the project out. Daxton was 10 minutes late. Typical. Marie hears a sudden shuffling sound from behind. “Sorry I’m late” Daxton says as he pulls the chair out to sit in. He looked a bit more disheveled than normal. His normally slicked blonde hair more so resembled bed head and the bags were heavy under his eyes.
“Hey this might sound weird but is your memory kinda hazy from the party this past weekend?” Daxton asked hesitantly.
“I mean it was a party at dustie’s filled with alcohol and drugs. Whose memory isn’t hazy?” Marie says keeping her eyes on the papers sprawled out on the table.
Daxton hesitates “Yeah I guess —“
“Let’s focus. I don’t want to be here all night. We have 3 pages to fill with Who is an ethical hero and why.” Marie cuts him off trying to change the subject.
“Yeah ok sorry” Daxton mumbles.
~~~~
They were 2 hours in at the library and an hour away before the library would close.
“Daxton you have actually been tolerable and respectful. Why are you the complete opposite anytime Jordan’s around?” Marie asked inquiringly.
Daxton smirked then said with a shrug “I personally can’t stand their smugness and rude attitude. So I just give it back ten fold.”
“Yeah well Jordan has the right to be that smug they worked really hard to get to #2. The attitude is…well. They wouldn’t be Jordan without the attitude. Get over it and stop bringing me into you two’s bullshit rivalry.” Marie responds bluntly.
“I am sorry for that.” Daxton blushes in response.
Marie scoffs “that’s hard to believe.”
“No really. I-I mean you’re obviously attractive but I shouldn’t make you uncomfortable. You know the study date thing was a joke.” Daxton responds looking down.
“Well I didn’t find it funny. I’ll accept your apology if it never happens again. If it does happen again I’ll blow your balls off. Understand?” Marie asked staring Daxton down.
Daxton’s eyes widen and he stutters out “ye-yes damn Marie. I’m sorry.”
A familiar laugh rings out from the bookshelves nearby and all Marie could do was rub her head to try to help the headache this entire situation was giving her.
Daxton pushed back his chair to follow the laugh to find who Marie already knew it to be. Jordan Li whose face was bright red from trying to hold in their laugh with a book resting open against the highest shelf in their taller form.
“Really you’re this threatened by me?” Daxton said crossing their arms with a smirk. “I can’t blame you , I too would be threatened if my competition looked like…well me.”
“Fuck off dickhead.” Jordan spat.
Daxton cocked his head to the side with narrowed eyes “what did you just say?” He asked.
“You fucking heard me.” Jordan snapped.
“You-you’ve said that before.” Daxton mumbles in realization.
“Wha-“ Jordan starts before he is cut off from the mini fireballs Daxton sends flying at their face.
As Jordan’s arms go up in a defensive position they hear Marie’s voice ringing out “IN THE FUCKING LIBRARY??? YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!”
Notes: I was planning on this being only 2 chapters but it might wrap up in the 3rd chapter 💛
Remember when last year I went to a massage for 2 months straight and we couldn’t fix my body because it kept returning back to its original state and the masseur didn’t know what was wrong with me?
I had to go again to a massage (I’ve been in so bad condition I slept whole yesterday, getting up around 10pm). This time I went to a different person near me. She was wonderful! She saw me and went “Oh dear! Your head is pushing too much forward and you’ve got a  too curved lower back, Lordosis, too!” Then she gave me a massage which included pressing acupressure points and tending Meridian lines and went “Your liver, gallbladder and bladder aren’t working as they should. There’s also issues with your gut and especially in large intestine. You’ve also clearly got a hyper active nervous system. All these together cause your stiffness. It’s nerve related mostly”.
Guys, I was sweating SO MUCH when she worked on the acupuncture points and energy lines! I’m still sweating afterwards. I also feel so rejuvenated compared to the other masseur who only treated my muscles.
We agreed to try shiatsu next week as she thought I would benefit the best from a treatment which takes care of the physical and energetic body.  I’ve wanted to try shiatsu for many years so wish me luck! ...Too bad that she will move away from the nearby studio... In a case shiatsu works for me.
I also got instructions to work with my vagus nerve (and how to do it) and concentrate on calming down my hyper active nervous system (wasn’t a surprise to me).
I can add 4 new things to my forever growing list of What Is Physically Wrong With Niu - The Forever Extending Journey of Being Chronically Ill and Disabled.
A full list of warnings for the fic can be found on the Series Master List and will be updated as we go along.
The silence is suffocating.
It wraps around her lungs making it hard to breathe. Sadness that feels all too familiar climbs up her throat, burning a path on its way up and she swallows thickly in an attempt to push it back down, left with the bitter taste of pre-emptive disappointment in her mouth. She turns to look at Aaron, his finger still lingering over the playback button on the machine, his eyes conveying the same surprise she felt.
“Play it again,” she says, speaking before she was even aware she was going to. Aaron looks up at her, his eyebrows furrowing as he shakes his head ever so slightly, his constant need to protect her, even from a voicemail from her estranged mother, as endearing as it could be irritating.
“Em-”
“Play it again,” she repeats, harsher than she intends to be as she cuts off his refusal, whatever his soft and kind words would have been. She can’t take them right now, can’t hear them, because she knows they will be her undoing. He stares at her for a second, his lips pressed together as he physically holds back his rebuttal, and he presses the button.
“Emily, it’s your mother. Of course, you know it’s me, it’s probably why you haven’t answered. I know you don’t want to see me, and I know why, but I wanted to speak to you. The incident a few months ago opened my eyes and…well I’ve been going to AA for two months now. I get my two-month chip in a week. My sponsor asked if I was going to invite you and I thought I’d call. It’s at the same place as last time. I hope to see you there. But I understand if I don’t. I lov-”
Aaron watches his wife as she folds in on herself as the message comes to an end and once again plunges them into silence. She crosses her arms so tightly over her chest that he can see how her fingers dig into her triceps from where he’s standing. He can see the tension in her jaw, her teeth clenched together as she desperately tries to stop herself from being affected by her mother.
He knew it was a lifelong battle, one Emily often lost. Her relationship with Elizabeth as complex as it was broken. Torn apart and patch repaired countless times, stitches running over stitches, barely a single part of it without damage. He wished more than anything that he could fix it for her, that he could take away her pain. All of his promises to not give Elizabeth a piece of his mind all but choking him, lodged in his throat as he steps towards his wife.
“Em-” He starts, but he’s cut off by a sharp cry from upstairs, the echo of it coming across the baby monitor between them on the counter. “I’ll go get-”
“I’ve got her,” Emily says, snapping into action and interrupting him as Lily continues to cry. It’s easier to do this, to look after her daughter than it is to think about her own mother, to consider once again reshifting what their relationship looked like.
“Sweetheart,” Aaron says, placing his hand on her arm and squeezing, “It’s ok, I can do it. You-”
“I said I’ve got it,” she repeats, her voice harsh as she all but spits the words at him. She felt tightly wound, her back straight and shoulders pulled together, weighed down by disappointment and the feeling of being blind-sighted, furious at herself for allowing her mother to affect her like this. To sneak under her skin and make her feel off-balance with nothing other than a voicemail. She sees the concern in Aaron’s eyes, how he’s clearly doing whatever he can to give her what she needs, always there to love her in whatever way she needs. She sighs and places her hand on his, linking their fingers together as she squeezes, “Just give me a couple of minutes, okay?” She asks, a hint of desperation to her eyes he hasn’t seen in a while, “I just…I need a minute.”
Despite it going against every instinct he has to pull her close, to delete the voicemail and act as if they’d never heard it, he knows it’s not his decision. That his need to protect her and their family overrode all sense of anything else, her happiness his highest priority at any cost. He nods and leans forward, pressing a soft kiss to her lips.
“Of course, sweetheart,” he says, kissing her once more before he pulls back, “I’ll give the two of you some time.”
She smiles gratefully at him, hoping that he sees everything she wants him to in it. Her love for him, for the way he loves them. She squeezes his hand before she turns away, walking out of the kitchen and towards the stairs quickly, taking them two at a time so she can comfort her little girl. She steps into the nursery and switches on the light, some of the tension in her belly easing just a little when she sets her eyes on Lily.
“Hi sweet girl,” she says, crossing the room and smiling down at her daughter. She unzips the sleepsack Lily was in and lifts her into her arms, her lips against her dark hair as she settles her against her chest, “What’s wrong, huh?” She says, a quick pat of her onesie-covered bottom enough to let her know it wasn’t a diaper change that was needed. She chuckles as Lily sucks on her tiny fist and she kisses her head again, “I see, Mommy’s got you.”
She settles into the chair they keep in the nursery, big enough for her and Aaron to both snuggle into if they want to, and she adjusts the neckline of her dress as she settles Lily into the crook of her arm, wincing when she sees the top of her breast has started to turn red. She sucks in a breath as Lily latches on, the discomfort sharp like it had been right at the start. She watches Lily as she feeds and she strokes her knuckles softly over Lily’s temple, feeling the soft dark hair and letting it ground her.
No matter how much she tried not to, she’d always think of her own mother in quiet moments like this. Questions that she knew she’d never get the answer to about what the early months of her own life looked like flooding her brain. Whether her mother ever looked down at her and felt the same way she did about Lily, the love all-encompassing and overwhelming just as it had been the very first time she’d looked at her.
“I love you so much, Lily,” she says quietly, stroking patterns on her daughter's skin as she continues to eat, “And I hope you never ever doubt that.” She looks up as she hears the door open and she smiles at her husband as he stops in the doorway.
He has a large glass of water in one hand a cut-up banana on a plate in the other. He clears his throat as he steps towards her, still trying to keep his promise to give her space.
“I figured she’d be hungry, so I brought you a snack for whilst you feed her,” he says, crossing the room and placing the plate and the glass down on the small table next to the chair.
“Thank you, honey,” she says, endlessly grateful for him, for how he looked after her even when she didn’t want him to. How he knew the difference between when she didn’t want him to look after her but needed it, even when she didn’t see the difference herself. He turns to leave, but she stops him, the idea of being anywhere without him suddenly making her breath catch in her chest, “Stay,” she says, the one word stopping him in his tracks. He turns to look at her, his lips pressed together as he tries to see if she means it. She smiles softly and reaches the hand that isn’t securing Lily to her out to him, “Please, stay.”
Aaron doesn’t need asking again, and he sits next to her in the chair, his arm around her shoulders as she settles next to him, “Is she okay?”
Emily nods and tilts her head to look at him, “She was just hungry,” she says, smiling softly as she looks back down at Lily, scrunching her nose up at the continued discomfort, “I think I’m getting an infection again, though,” she says, feeling relief when Lily pulls away, “It hurts.”
He nods as he takes Lily from her carefully, throwing a muslin cloth over his shoulder as he settles his daughter against him to burp her. He rubs his hand on the baby’s back as Emily readjusts her clothing, a barely disguised wince on her face as her bra makes contact with her skin.
“I’ll call your doctor in the morning,” he says as he continues to rub circles on Lily’s back, “See if she can get you an appointment.”
She smiles and stops herself from saying she could call the doctor herself, well aware that this was something she could let him have.
“Thanks,” she says, popping a slice of the banana he’d prepared for her into her mouth before she rests her head on his shoulder, her eyes fixed on Lily resting on his other one. She stares at her sweet face, the nose she’d given her and always hated until she saw it on her baby, her chubby cheeks and dark brown eyes. She sighs, her heart growing so big in her chest that it feels hard to breathe, “Sometimes I wonder how I made something so perfect.”
Lily chooses that moment to burp, something that draws a laugh out of both of her parents, and Aaron kisses the baby’s forehead.
“She’s perfect because you are, sweetheart,” he says sincerely, turning his head to kiss Emily’s temple, “She gets everything from you.”
Emily hums and reaches out to stroke Lily’s cheek, smiling sadly the infant is already falling back asleep, content and safe in the embrace of both of her parents.
“When I was growing up everyone always used to say I looked just like my mother,” she says, sharing something she’d shared with him countless times before, all the more poignant this evening with a message from the other woman still on the machine downstairs, “I never used to see it,” she says, looking up at him, shaking her head at her younger self, “Which is ridiculous because I do look like her, which means Lily does too,” she presses her lips together and laughs humourlessly, “I guess I just didn’t want it to mean that I was like her, you know? That the similarities only went skin deep.”
“You’re nothing like her, Emily,” he says with no hesitation, barely waiting for her to stop before he speaks, as if he’d been holding it back all evening. She smiles at him and cups his cheek, her thumb skating back and forth over his skin.
“You’re sweet.”
“It’s true,” he insists, looking down to see Lily was now fast asleep against him. He stands up and walks her over to the crib, laying her down and zipping her sleep sack back up around her as he continues to talk, “You love everyone around you so entirely it sometimes makes me worry you don’t keep any of it back for yourself,” he says, turning back to look at her, slipping back into his space on the seat, his arm back around her shoulders, “And you’re a fantastic mother. There’s a reason Lily always wants you, and it’s not just because you’re the one with the boobs like you always like to joke,” he quips, raising his eyebrow as pre-empts her usual follow up comment, “It’s because even now she knows how much you love her, how safe you make her feel.”
She stares at him, all her words caught in her chest as she tries and fails to know what to say. She settles on kissing him, her hand on his cheek again as she holds him in place. She sighs as she pulls back, her forehead against his as she blows out a breath.
“I don’t know what to do.”
He cups the back of her head, his fingers tangling into her hair, “I know, baby, but you don’t have to figure it all out now” he says, once again wishing he could make the decision for her, “If you do decide to go, I’ll come with you.”
She shakes her head as she pulls back, “No, if I go…I want you to stay here with her,” she says, nodding towards the crib.
He doesn’t agree, she can feel it in the way his grip tightens on her, his protective nature of her, even if it was her he was protecting her from, as much of an instinct to him as breaking, but he nods anyway.
“Okay,” he says, kissing her, “I’ll do whatever you need me to do.”
She smiles and leans in to hug him, her arms tight around him as she presses her face into his shoulder, breathing in the scent of him, the scent of home.
___
She purposely stays near the back.
As she walks through the doors it feels like she’s stepped back in time, as if she’s a twenty-something who was here to support her mother all by herself, as lonely as she’d ever felt as she sat and listened as her mother was handed a small chip by a stranger. A round piece of plastic that was supposed to signify the start of a new stage of their life. It feels like history repeating itself, and she has to remind herself that while she’s physically here by herself, she isn’t alone. She has a baby and a husband at home who love her, the latter of whom had looked at her with complete sincerity only an hour ago when he said he could come with her if she changed her mind.
She might be alone right now, but she wasn’t lonely. She hadn’t been in some time, and she knew she never would be again.
She sits in the back row of the seats that had been laid out, her hands twisting together in her lap, her fingers grasping her wedding rings, as she watches and listens whilst a handful of people are handed their sobriety chips. She can’t breathe when her mother steps onto the small platform in front.
She looks the same. She doesn’t look sick, or like she’s lost any weight. She looked the exact same as she had the last time Emily had seen her over a year ago at her house when she’d gone over to confront her about her drinking. For a reason she can’t explain the reality makes her ache. The fact it had been a year, that her life had changed beyond recognition in that time, seemingly insignificant as Elizabeth shakes hands with her sponsor and takes the chip she’s offered.
Emily considers sneaking out the moment the meeting is over, not sure why she’d come in the first place, but she locks eyes with her mother and she knows she can’t. She sucks in a deep breath as Elizabeth politely finishes her conversation with who she’d been speaking to and she crosses the room.
“Emily,” she says, her voice calm, her armour impenetrable as always as she stands in front of the daughter she’d been estranged from for so long, “I didn’t think you’d come.”
Emily presses her lips together and looks at the floor as she clears her throat, “Honestly, I didn’t think I would either.”
They fall into silence. It’s tense and thick and rests over them like a cloying blanket, the heat of it making Emily’s cheeks feel like they are burning red. It’s awkward, like it always had been, and Emily hates that it feels normal.
“Would you like to get a coffee? I think we should probably talk,” Elizabeth says, and Emily nods, her arms tight over her chest as she looks over at the coffee machine in the corner, some of the other attendees standing around it, “Not here,” Elizabeth adds, following her line of sight, “The coffee here leaves a lot to be desired, but there’s a cafe down the street where it’s more bearable.”
She nods again, “Ok, sure. I can stay for a coffee,” she says, smiling tightly as she follows her mother out of the church, a building nestled away on a nondescript street. A place that was hiding in plain sight, where many recognisable names in DC sought anonymity that only being them could buy.
They walk in silence during the short journey to the cafe, neither one of them sure where to start, the fractures of their relationship deeper than they had ever been. It’s only when they sit down and have given their coffee orders that Elizabeth speaks.
“It’s not like you to order decaf,” she says, looking at her daughter curiously across the table they were sitting at. Emily folds her hands together, once again twisting her rings around her finger.
“Well, I do have a baby,” she says, the fact this was the first time she’d ever spoken to her mother about her daughter not lost on her, “It’s a bit late in the day to give her breast milk laced with caffeine.”
Elizabeth nods, a tightness to the movement that Emily not so subtly hopes is regret, “I suppose that makes sense.”
Their coffees are brought over, and the waitress clearly picks up on the tension between them and leaves without small talk. Emily wraps her hands around her mug of coffee, the heat of the ceramic against her skin a relief from the ache in her chest.
“When Aaron…” Elizabeth trails off, almost immediately choosing to rephrase her choice of words, “When I last saw Aaron he said you’d had the baby. He wouldn’t tell me much,” she says, raising her eyebrows, the movement making a flash of anger burn through Emily’s gut, “Did everything go okay?”
Emily swallows thickly to push back down the fury she doesn’t want to let out here, not sure her mother deserved even that from her let alone anything close to forgiveness.
“We had a bit of a scare when she was being born but she’s okay,” Emily says, purposely giving Elizabeth a little more information than she knows Aaron had all those months ago when he’d picked her up from the police station, “She’s perfect actually.”
“She? I have a granddaughter?” Elizabeth asks, and Emily sighs, already desperate to protect her little girl as if she were right here with her.
“Yes,” she replies, sipping her coffee, “Her name is Lily.”
“Can I see a picture?”
Emily couldn’t explain her resistance to the question if she tried, everything in her screaming to say no even though she knew it was harmless, that showing her a picture wasn’t going to change anything. She nods, pushing through her initial instinct as she pulls her phone out of her pocket and unlocks it, quickly finding a picture of Lily that she’d only taken the night before. Lily is laughing in the picture, content in Aaron’s arms as she giggles at his serious face, apparently having inherited the lack of effect it had on her from Emily. She passes the phone to her mother who smiles as she looks at it, a brief softness to her eyes that Emily had only ever seen a handful of times in her life.
“She’s beautiful,” Elizabeth says as she passes the phone back over, “She looks just like you did when you were a baby.”
Emily locks her phone and slips it back into her pocket, “Thank you,” she says, the two of them falling back into silence again, the tension making Emily want to do nothing other than leave and go home to her family. She sighs, “Look, Mother-”
“I know I owe you a lot of apologies,” Elizabeth says, her eyes fixed on the table between them, “You know better than anyone I’m not any good at them.”
Emily laughs and nods, “I guess I do.”
“You were right to be angry the last time we saw each other, and Aaron was right to be the last time I saw him,” she says, looking up at her daughter, “You deserve better.”
She looks at her mother and blows out a steady breath, her lips pressed together as she tries to stop a sad smile from breaking out over her face.
“I do deserve better,” she says, “I know addiction is complicated,” she says, not put off as her mother flinches at the word, “I know that it’s a disease, but it doesn’t make coming second to it any easier to take. I’ve been a mom for four months and I can’t imagine ever putting anything before her. ”
“I’ve made a lot of mistakes,” Elizabeth says, “And my sponsor says an important part of recovery is making amends-”
“Is that what this is?” Emily asks, her brows knitting together, “You’re here hoping I’ll accept an apology and then what? We go back to not speaking?”
“No,” Elizabeth insists, shaking her head, “I want to be a part of your life. Of…” she trails off and Emily feels the anger burning in her belly again.
“Lily.”
“Of Lily’s life,” she continues, “But I know it is going to take a long time for you to trust me again. For us to be anywhere near where we used to be.”
Emily scoffs, “We weren’t exactly in a great place anyway, Mom,” she says, shaking her head when Elizabeth looks somewhere near shocked, “There’s so much we’ve never spoken about,” she says, looking at the time on her watch, seeing it was already later than she said she’d be home to Aaron, “And we aren’t going to fix it all tonight. I need to get home.”
“I’d like to try at least, Emily,” Elizabeth says, the sincerity in her voice making Emily make eye contact with her, “I know you feel the need to protect your little girl, but please don’t forget that you’re mine.”
Emily blows out a breath and shakes her head, wiping away a stray tear that escapes as she does so.
“Haven’t I already given you enough of myself?” She asks, addressing the liver donation for only the second time in her life, “Where does it stop? When do I get to be the one who doesn’t always have to give?”
Elizabeth looks like she wants to argue with her but she stops herself, “I’ve asked a lot of you over the years, often without even saying thank you,” she says, “I am sorry about that.”
Emily swallows thickly, the apology she’d waited years for lacklustre and not even touching the surface of the hurt she feels, of the hurt that felt like a permanent part of her.
“Can I ask you something?” Emily asks, and Elizabeth nods in response, “Why now? Why get sober now after relapsing for so long?”
“Well,” Elizabeth says carefully, “When I saw Aaron-”
“That was three months ago,” Emily cuts her off, crossing her arms over her chest, her short nails digging into her own skin through her sweater, “You’ve been sober for two. Why now?”
Elizabeth stares at her for a second, her lips pressed together in a firm line before she nods.
“The secretary of state came to me. Apparently, news of my… indiscretion with the DC police department made it to her. She had concerns.”
Emily laughs bitterly and shakes her head, “So, your boss came to you, your job was at risk and that was when you decided to stop?” She asks, her mother’s silence the only answer she needs, “I should have known.”
“Emily, you know how important my work is. You love your job too.”
“I changed jobs,” Emily says, “After I had Lily I changed departments so I can be the mother she needs, so she knows she’s more important,” she feels on edge, her skin itching to get out of here, “I need to go,” she says, signalling for the waitress and asking for the check, “I’m happy to talk again at some point, to try to get back something but, I can’t do this right now.”
If her mother disagrees with her she doesn’t say anything, she simply watches as Emily hands her card over to the waitress, her eyes fixed on the small piece of plastic, her eyebrows raising as she reads the name on it.
“Emily Hotchner?” She asks, “You changed your name?”
Emily nods as the waitress puts the bill in front of her, signing it quickly, “Yeah,” she says, providing no explanation, “I changed my name. I am married after all.” She stands as soon as she has settled the bill, “I’ll call you, okay?”
Elizabeth nods as she stands too, “Okay, I…thank you for coming today.”
Emily smiles tightly, unsure what to do as she steps outside, her mother only a couple of paces behind her. She isn’t aware that she’s going to pull her Elizabeth into a hug before she does it, her body working on some kind of baser instinct, the inner child that lived deep inside of her still aching for her mother’s comfort even now. She winces as her chest presses up against her mother’s and Elizabeth looks concerned as they pull back.
“I have mastitis,” Emily explains, pulling back and putting some space between them, “I’m okay, my doctor put me on antibiotics.”
Elizabeth smiles at her, “Good, I’m glad,” she says, the silence between them awkward again, “I’ll see you soon?”
Emily swallows thickly as she nods, “Yeah, soon,” she replies, not entirely sure if she’s lying or not. They exchange goodbyes and Emily walks back to her car, numb to everything including the cold winter air around her. It’s only when she settles into the driver's seat and looks at the reflection car seat in the back in the rearview mirror. It’s the simple reminder she needs that she’s not doing this alone this time. That she has family, a solid foundation beneath her feet. She blows out a breath and starts the engine, desperate to be back with them as soon as she can be.
___
“Okay, Lily-Pad,” Aaron says, looking down at the little girl strapped to his chest, his smile widening as she looks up at him, “Mommy is on her way home and we are going to make her some hot chocolate.”
He wanted to go with her. He’d made no secret of it, every part of him itching to sit by her side as she saw her mother for the first time in over a year, but he also wanted to be supportive. To walk the fine line of knowing when to push her and when to simply let his wife do what she thought was best. This time he’d done as she’d asked, stayed home with their baby so she had something to come home to, a reminder of what she had now in comparison to the last time she’d been through this.
He makes hot chocolates to keep himself busy, narrating every step to his infant daughter as if she understood or cared, aware that more than anything his voice was still as soothing to her now as it had been when she was still in Emily’s belly. He pulls the marshmallows out of the pantry just as he hears the front door open and he places the packet down, his hand on Lily’s back as he leaves the kitchen.
“Mommy’s home,” he says to his daughter as he walks towards the front door. He smiles when he makes it, his eyes locking with Emily’s as she slides her shoes onto the rack, “Hi sweetheart.”
“Hi,” she breathes out, a weight lifted from her chest as soon as she sees them. She walks over and presses a kiss to Aaron’s lips, her hand resting over his on Lily’s back. She smiles as he wraps his arm around her waist, holding her close as his thumb sneaks under her shirt, rubbing gently at her skin. She leans down to kiss Lily’s head before she looks back up at her husband, “Have I ever told you that you look really good when you’re wearing a baby?”
He chuckles and presses a kiss to her cheek, “Only every time I do it,” he replies, smiling at her, his hold on her hip tightening, “How was it?”
She sighs and rests her head on his shoulder, “It was…she’s trying,” she says, her eyes sad as they meet his, “I just don’t know if it’s enough.”
He knows better than most when she means, how it feels to be the child of someone whose life was ravaged by addiction, and he simply pulls her closer, his lips against her temple as he replies.
“You don’t have to decide anything now, Em,” he says, pulling back to look at her, his smile loving and kind, “We can figure it out together.”
She nods and smiles at him, pushing hair from his forehead, “Yeah, together.”
He kisses her once more before he pulls back enough to guide her towards the kitchen, “Come on, Lily and I were making you a hot chocolate.”
She gasps in fake surprise even though she knew would have done that, her mind drifting towards the sweet treat the entire drive home.
“Really?” She asks, looking down at the little girl who was halfway asleep, “And Lily helped?”
“She was essential to the whole thing,” he says, squeezing her hip again, “You can even pick how many marshmallows you have.”
“Oh, you do spoil me.” She chuckles, shaking her head at her ridiculous, sweet, man as they walk into the kitchen.
After her mother had stopped drinking last time she’d gone to a few of her presentations and had always gone home to an empty apartment afterwards. She’d stared at the wine in her fridge before pulling a box of Swiss Miss out of the cabinet, one sachet left that was likely expired, and making herself a hot chocolate, unknowingly starting a tradition she would continue for years.
It was different now, better. And not just because Aaron had bought an expensive hot chocolate maker for her, or because he bought the best chocolate for it, but because he was here. Because he had made her one without her asking him to with their little girl strapped to his chest. Their house warm with love and comfort.
She’d think she was lucky, but she knew she’d fought hard for this, and that she would continue to do so for the rest of her life.
player: Mats Hummels words: 1k+ request: Mats Hummels - no pref - 250 - 500 - Them decorating the tree together and she gifts him a new bauble (they have a collection of silly and memorable ones) to tell him they’re gonna have a baby
A/N: ... so this is why it's taking so long for me to write these. I can't abide by the word limit.
A/N 2: in my haste to get this posted, I (wrongly) forgot to thank @percervall for helping when I was getting inside my own head and couldn't think straight.
Tumblr media
“I didn’t realise ornaments held so much until you.” Mats says from his sprawled out position on the floor. He’s not a grinch, but he’s not the first one banging down the door to get a tree up and decorated. That being said, he does enjoy seeing the result and though he tries to deny it, he revels in watching her getting excited about the small things.
“They just capture a moment or two in your life.” she says, holding one in her hands while she scans the tree for the perfect place. She wouldn’t say she had a need for things to be perfect but Mats absolutely would and he takes every opportunity to move some around when she’s annoyed him, just to watch her staring at the tree for far longer than needed trying to work out why it no longer looks right.
Some have been passed down through generations and obviously hold sentiment to her, some are funny little ones that either Mats himself had picked up or they’d both purchased together once he learnt of her love for decorations, some just simply looked good. Some, like the ones they’ve been looking at today, are from key moments. Like their first christmas together and she’d brought her favourite one to his to put on it to cement her place in his home. Or one that they’d purchased together when they moved into their new home. There’s even a new one today to symbolise his man of the match award, a small tree trinket that she’d picked up as a joke but he had to chuckle when he saw it.
But that’s not the only new thing for the tree that she’d bought for him. And nerves are building in her belly as the thought of it creeps back in once more. She knows if she doesn’t get it under control, she’s going to go to pieces and the announcement is ruined. She’s wondered how to do this for far too long and figured that since they were now making this a tradition where the two of them both put a bauble on each, that this would be his main bauble to hang. She hasn’t seen him eye any up yet which makes this even better for her to be able to pass him the one she needs him to look at.
“I think I’ve left my drink in the kitchen, do you mind going to get it for me?” She asks as she places her bauble on the tree. Her hand moves to her stomach, a move that has become so instinctive since she’d see the pregnancy confirmation on the pregnancy test(s) that she’d taken, but also to try and physically settle herself. She’s kept this to herself for a few weeks while she tries to work out what she wants to do and weighing up how he’ll react to the news and now that the time is here, she realises it’s probably the waiting to tell him that’s got her into this anxious state.
He grumbles as he gets up but he does as she asks. The moment he’s out of the room and she hears him moving away, she goes to where she’s hidden the surprise, retrieves it and puts it in with the other decorations. She needs to remain calm but she heard the way her voice crumbled a little when she asked that question. Mats, for all his dumbass-ery, was quite smart and he knew her better than she liked to admit. It wouldn’t take much more voice wavering for him to figure out something was wrong.
“I gave it a little sip,” he declares as he walks back into the room. “Had to make sure it was still warm,” he justifies when he catches her expression. She lets him off the hook, but only because of her nerves.
“Thanks.” she takes a little sip herself once it’s in her hands and she throws a look in the direction of the decorations. “Can you pass me the white one over there please? I’m trying to think where to put it.” She says as nonchalantly as possible.
She keeps her back to Mats as she hears him rummaging through the packaging until he picks one out. “This one? With the black writing that says…” Mats trails off as he reads it to himself. She wants to turn to look at him, to see what his initial reaction is but she also can’t stand to see if it’s a reaction that’s less than happy. “Baby Hummels coming summer 2024” he repeats, his voice taking a tone that she’s never heard before.
It’s only now that she turns, eyes raking over him to see his body language. He’s standing there with it in his hands, unable to look away from it, fingers gently stroking over the words written in acrylic pen. She wants to disturb him, wants to ask what his thoughts are but she knows oh too well what it felt like to see those two lines on the test. This was his test.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“How sure?” Only now does he look at her face.
“Quite sure. I took five that first day and I’ve taken two weekly ones since.”
“You’ve known for two weeks?” He asks quietly.
“I needed to get to 6 weeks for it to be classed as a pregnancy. Anything before then is…”
“Right.” Mats nods and looks back at the bauble.
“Are you ok with that?” she nervously asks.
“We both agreed for you to come off your pill months ago. Yeah, I think I’m ok with it,” he grins and pulls her into a hug. “Our last Christmas as a two. Hey there, Mama.”
And even though it’s a name that she’s thrown around to herself, saying it softly as she’s stroked over her stomach which, thanks to the increase in hormones, has made her lower belly a little more bloated and giving her a false belief that this is her bump.
“Hey there daddy.”
_
It's worth noting here that week 12 is generally considered the safe week for pregnancies, the week where you can tell people because the rates in which you can miscarry drop with each week.
Week 24 means that your baby has a chance of survival should they be born early.
However, in order for your pregnancy to be classed as a pregnancy, you need to get to week 6. I know this first hand. This is when they can perform an ultrasound scan.
So while it may seem in the fic that she means week 6 is the "safe" week, it just means that she can now be classed as pregnant from a medical perspective.
