The Dead Zone (1983)
You walk into The Dead Zone with certain assumptions based on the names on the poster. Though David Cronenberg has directed many different films in various genres, when you see his name next to Stephen King’s, you expect a lot of gross corpses and nightmare fuel. With Christopher Walken in the lead, you might think the film will be… a bit goofy? I mean let’s face it, he’s basically become a living meme at this point. That’s not what you’re getting. I’m not sure I’d even categorize The Dead Zone as a horror film; it’s a blend between several genres, a great Twilight Zone-type story with an excellent performance from its lead, strong emotions throughout and a great conclusion.
After a date with his girlfriend, Sarah (Brooke Adams), Johnny Smith (Walken) is injured in a car accident and left comatose. Waking up after five years, Johnny discovers he now has psychic abilities. By touching someone, he can learn about their future, past, or parts of their present even they may be unaware of.
In many stories, we’ve seen superheroes lament their extraordinary abilities - it’s never sat well with me. Rotten luck with the girl next door or not, everyone wants to be Spider-Man. In The Dead Zone, Johnny’s power feels like a curse. While he manages to save someone soon after waking up, news of this extraordinary skill quickly spreads and in no time, he’s being hounded by reporters who want to turn him into an exhibit and strangers who want his help for trivial matters like finding a lost dog. The man’s already having a difficult enough time accepting that he no longer has a job or a girlfriend, that he’s missed out on half a decade of living and now this? It’s no wonder he wants to return this gift.
What follows are a series of episodic “adventures” that always ultimately return to Johnny and his relationship with the rest of the world as seen by the way he interacts with children. When the film begins, he is a school teacher. When he wakes up from his coma, he has lost his job and learns that Sarah now has a husband and a young child of her own. She represents the life he missed because of his accident. Later, a 15-year-old girl is murdered by a serial killer and authorities briefly convince Johnny to return to the world from his self-imposed exile to help with the investigation. In another film, this hunt for a murderer with Sheriff George Bannerman (Tom Skerritt) would’ve been the whole movie. Here, it’s just a snippet of a bigger story as Johnny figures out how and when he wants to use his abilities. His desire to have a family, to keep children safe or to follow his calling as a teacher always bring him back to our world but his ability to see beyond pushes him away. Meanwhile, the mysteries to solve always remain secondary to the emotional journey. It’s a perfect marriage delicately balanced by director Cronenberg, who infuses so much humanity in this fantastic tale.
As Johnny, Christopher Walken delivers an excellent performance. You can feel the whirlwind of conflicting emotions within him. The heartbreak of losing his sweetheart, the daunting questions regarding his abilities, the frustration and isolation that come with his newfound fame. He’s aided by an excellent screenplay by Jeffrey Boam, who improves the novel by King by tying every episode together thematically and condensing the story into an efficient package.
The Dead Zone easily ranks among the best adaptations of Stephen King’s works. It’s so much more than its premise, which is saying something considering the potential of Johnny’s abilities. The characters are rich, the interactions are emotional and human. The conclusion is perfect. I’m not sure how it would play out a second time when you know the answers to each of the mysteries we encounter but I intend to find out. It’s a movie you’ll want to revisit. (August 20, 2021)

How do you stay so motivated to write? You’re so prolific, it’s honestly kinda awe-inspiring. The longest thing I’ve ever written is currently 68 pages (26.5k words) and I’ve been writing it for like a year and a half, and it’s still not even close to done 😭 so how do you keep your motivation and spark going strong? Do you have any advice?
(I hope it's okay that I'm responding publicly, and I apologize that this gets a little Soap Box-y, I'm very passionate about the art form of writing)
I'm sorry to say I don't have any super solid advice in this regard. Honestly, the whole reason I'm a writer in the first place is because I never get tired of doing it. I was literally sitting at my computer in collage, writing something, wracking my brain to figure out a major and a career I felt like I could do forever, and it dawned on me that writing was the answer.
It's not always easy, and sometimes it's tiring and frustrating, and you really just want the piece to be done already. I think writers, at any level, get into the bad habit of feeling like they have to write a certain amount, or beating themselves up for not being as prolific as they'd want to be. I think the best advice I can give to writers who are just starting out, or using it as fun, or practice, or for the sake of getting better, is to write what you feel like writing. Don't force yourself from one project to work on another, don't feel like you need to obligate something. Write because it's fun, and because you want to. And if you don't feel like writing, then don't. I feel like there's kind of this weird idea out there that if you're not writing, then you're failing as a writer. But sometimes you don't want to do it, and that's okay. Writing gets a lot harder when you're forcing yourself to do it.
Everyone is different. A writer shouldn't chain themselves to a single style or a single story or a single goal. It's a flexible art. Have fun, get experimental, write something that is terrible. Sometimes we stop because we think what we've written is too bad to continue, sometimes we stop because we loose the passion. Write because you want to, whenever you want to, however you want to, at whatever pace you can.
You don't have to write like everyone else, no one has to write like anyone else. We have a tendency to compare ourselves to others, and it's a bad habit, but I haven't met a writer yet who doesn't do this. (If you're a writer who doesn't compare yourself to others, I envy you lololol, this is just my experience.) I constantly compare myself to others. But doing that will never make me a better writer.
This is kind of a case of 'I know how to do this thing already, so I don't know how to properly communicate to you how to do it.' I have an overwhelming internal need to write, I'm like Spider Georg (not to bring memes into this) but I shouldn't be counted, and I shouldn't be compared to because I am a god damn Freak who writes like I'm going to die if I don't. (I hope saying that 'I shouldn't be compared to' doesn't sound arrogant or conceited, I'm not sure how else to phrase it)
Sorry this got so long, I hope that all makes sense. If anyone wants tidbits of writing advice in terms of craft, please feel free to ask. Honestly, feel free to ask me anything! I really appreciate everyone who reads and enjoys my stories.

i've been going on archaeological expeditions into the depths of the SPN tags on AO3, and tonight i got drop-kicked into an out-of-body experience so cursed that it'd require LAYERS of explanations to convey to a civilian how fucking funny it was:

and since SPN angels are all referred to as siblings (and are, of course, highly normal about that) it seems pretty common to just slap the same name onto other humanverse'd angels too
in the middle seasons one of Castiel's endless procession of dickwad angelic bosses is named Naomi

seriously though, it's incredible how much of my "maybe titties again?" goodwill tumblr torched in 30 seconds through obnoxious UX alone:
i am browsing around in the android app. i see a post about disabling some new content filter. this is the first I've heard of it, even though my version of the app does turn out to have it - they put it in place before adding any mechanism to let me know it's there. strike one.
i go to settings > dashboard, the place where all the settings about what you do and don't see are supposed to live. no sign of it.
i go back to the settings menu. squint at it. see an unremarkable entry near the bottom called "Content you see" that isn't highlighted or marked as new in any way (even though i can't even visit anyone's blog anymore without having to actively tap past an FYI tooltip that can't be turned off, every single time, shilling weeks-old gift features that I've already used)
...oh, that's where my custom tag and keyword filters went. no prior indication they'd even been moved!
i have a lot of filters set up. like. a LOT. i now have to scroll past every single one of them, tag AND keyword, uncollapsed and unabridged, just to see whether there's another setting hiding underneath. on mobile! even the desktop site is more polite than this, jesus
just to recap so far: the only reason i even know to look is that i saw a random post about new content settings, and i would never have bothered with all that scrolling if i weren't crusty and paranoid about sites that hide vital settings in the depths of Menu Hell. i mean, that'd be crazy, right? surely listing all those filters with no collapse is a signal there's nothing worthwhile underneath them.
oh no wait, there they are!
it's not just one toggle, it's FOUR new settings!
all of them are set to "hide everything and never even let me know it was there"
even though there is a "blur" option that would've let me know that stuff was being hidden from me without actually showing it
even though i have, in the past, gone into every iteration of the adult content settings that tumblr has ever rolled out and affirmatively ordered it to show me the titties
THEY ARE NOT TOGGLES. EACH ONE OPENS A SEPARATE MENU SCREEN. every single one of the FOUR new settings needs like 3+ taps in the android app just to put it back to normal.
does turning on the catchall "mature content" setting cause the three more specific ones to default to "show" and let me pick restrictions as needed like a goddamn adult? NOPE, i have to go into the stupid little menu for every single one
it's almost like you didn't want me to find them and, having found them, wanted to make me pay as high an annoyance tax as possible to opt out of being nannied
the dashboard banner that eventually shows up, btw, says nothing about having been voluntold for additional filtering, and also just dumps you out in the general settings menu and leaves you to fend for yourself, with no indication of where this shit is hidden or what "this shit" even is. and that's downright friendly next to the link in the announcement post that's apparently been kicking people out of the app and onto web.
this is not how you get a rightfully mistrustful userbase to be optimistic about putting scarlet letters on their own posts. this is not how you convince anyone that it's just a courtesy, not a scarlet letter, or that it won't be used to punish and stigmatize you the instant the wind shifts direction.
in the most practical here-and-now terms, this is also not how you get people to USE the new content warnings on their posts! artists, especially, are hardly gonna jump to flag anything as mature if it means every single one of their followers - regardless of age, previous adult content settings, or whether they're in Apple's walled garden or not - has just been silently opted out of ever knowing it was there. (this goes double if it requires more than one sentence to explain how to reverse it. which this new setting seems almost deliberately designed to do.)
look, i want the titties back, okay? i would be delighted if this turned out to be the first step towards bringing them back. i know Tumblr is under duress from Apple that affects how they can do whatever they're doing here. but the way it's being rolled out sucks needless ass, and if they wanted my hope and trust, well, those are easier to muster up when I'm not going in grouchy about the frustrating UX of an app that's just taken hostile action against my prior explicitly-affirmed preferences.

Yes i do plan to continue No Sway, but i'm sort of caught in a difficult place with it where it was originally supposed to be a fun kink meme fill, and then it grew a plot, and then i let it simmer for several years, and now i sort of want to re-write the whole thing into something that's more coherent with my evolved thoughts about the Legion DK stuff based on BFA and SL. I think i probably will end up doing re-writes because i do want to finish it (and actually get around to the very vaguely outlined sequel!), but if that happens I won't take down the original No Sway on Ao3, i'll probably just re-title the re-write and add appropriate notes about the change to both.
This isn't saying it will happen any time soon, unfortunately, because I've also just been exceptionally busy recently and also i have Many other wips for Warcraft and other fandoms that i'm slowly working towards completion on.
(✿◡‿◡) Very happy to hear that I have been successful in spreading the good word of Thoras/Darion, though! The sequel to No Sway is meant partially to focus on their relationship, which is another reason i want to finish it!
Some headcanons for them, off the top of my head:
One of Thoras' biggest struggles adjusting to life in the Ebon Blade has ironically been that he needs to cultivate hobbies! When he was alive he spent all his time being King and little else other than training to keep his martial skills sharp, now he has the opposite problem; where even Horseman Duties and extra training aren't quite enough to fill a day. The other Horsemen are obviously trying to help him figure out things he likes to do, but he hasn't figured it out quite yet.
Luckily, Darion is Hobbies Georg in my headcanons! He was a sickly kid who was often housebound, and when he was older Alexandros kept a very close eye on him (because Alexandros was convinced he was cursed, which is true) and moreover kept him very close to home. A short list of Darion's hobbies include: hunting, bone collecting, scrimshaw and woodcarving, herbalism and gardening, alchemy, reading military treatises (the more dry and technical the better), cooking, enchanting, smithing, and many more. Some of these hobbies he picked up as a kid, some he picked up during the Third War, some he picked up while in the Scourge as a student of Kel'thuzad, some he even picked up because he's a powerful enough necromancer that he wants particular reagents and can only get good enough quality ones if he makes/procures them himself.
In Darion's office on Acherus, jammed into a corner, is a terrarium filled with poisonous spiders. He occasionally uses them for alchemy or necromancy, but mostly he keeps them because he thinks they're neat and since he's dead he doesn't need to worry about the venom. Occasionally when he really wants to freak someone out he'll take one out of the tank and eat it.

Thinking about the various tumblr memes...
Something about a few of them... warms my heart.
I adore Spider Georg, Throckmorton, and the children's hospital jokes. I love Goncharov (1973).
Smth about how we've managed to create an entire movie (rather coherently, might I say) from a knock-off boot tag. Smth about how the "and" in Spider Georg is always spelled "adn", how Throckmorton was born from a math question and lives in stockphotos and no-context headlines. How red symbolizes joy and health :).
I'm a sucker for culture. I love seeing people interact and studying their norms, traditions, and jokes. This fucked up, abandoned/forsaken clown factory may have negative land value. I may hate it at times and want to burn it down (fuck the formatting system). But the psychological value? The value for studying how cultures develop and change and evolve as we move through the digital age? Beautiful. Exquisite. Horribly cursed.

every time I think about spiders georg meme and then all the memes about Americans not knowing what electric kettles are I remember that I, an American who owns 4 kettles (two electric, two stovetop) am the outlier and should never be counted.
