re: your tags on that recent supernatural gifset, i am truly OBSESSED with the way dean always responds to implied threats of sexual violence. like, he's not oblivious and he's not shocked, either. it's like, oh, this again. the RESIGNED DISGUST, exactly. maybe some very dark gallows humor about it. and it's there even before hell. like, that's not a man for whom this is unfamiliar or unexpected.

right - it goes all the way back to the pilot, where one of the cops who bent him over the car hood is talking about how much trouble he's about to be in and he fires back "we talking misdemeanor trouble, or 'squeal like a pig' trouble?", referencing an infamous male rape scene in Deliverance. which is another tendency (catching a creeper vibe and jumping to Make It Weird first) that goes hand in hand with the resignation - if he can expect and brace for and taunt would-be assailants about it pre-emptively, it loses some of its power to wrong-foot him. or at least that seems to be the hope.

(early s1 Dean also insta-clocks at least one regular guy checking him out - in 1x04 when he's going down the plane aisle with the EMF meter scanning passengers - and brushes it off with mild exasperation, in a reaction that seems habitual and not particularly threatened. it's a silent, blink-and-you'll-miss-it, unscripted exchange of Looks; implications within implications.)

anyway i'm obsessed with jackles' delivery in the actually-threatening situations - it's this alchemical mix of defiant bravado, pointed lack of surprise, genuine disgust, practiced resignation, and (on an actor rather than character level) positioning himself for the camera to dwell lovingly - one might say lecherously - on his reaction to sexual menace. as a character, Dean's revulsion and wariness always read as genuine, even when that cuts against a script that might be leaning into "what man wouldn't be turned on by this" tropes or treating the whole situation as joke fodder. but SPN also looooooves beautiful men in distress, and as an actor Ackles is so clearly participating in making those moments erotic, despite or maybe because of his character's aversion to them.

for this exact reason, i get kind of annoyed when people leave "look what a sub Dean is" type comments on gifsets of those scenes, or use Dean's supposed "enjoyment" of clearly-unwanted encounters as evidence of any particular sexual preference... but on the other hand, i do see where the reaction comes from. as Sheila O'Malley, professor emerita of Dean Studies and number one cheerleader for Jensen Ackles derangement, put it, "his aversion looks like desire." (if you haven't read her s1-3 episode recaps, jfc, run don't walk. i don't know that i always agree with her SPN takes, but they always come from the best possible place: strapping on one's sicko goggles and devoting way too much thought and expertise to the implications of a show that's constantly writing too much into it.)
