#I love solitaire so much

Tori is cold, sad, depressed Michael is warm, angry, and filled with emotion. They balance each other out. Tori cools Michael down calms Michael allowing his anger to subside she cools him down (once again the hot and cold dynamic). Michael brings warmth and happiness into Tori's life allowing her not to be so cold and detached from everything and making her hate herself a little less. They both hate themselves which is funny because they both love each other and want to be more like each other. I think they both saved each other to be honest and they know it by the end. I hope they find a way to teach each other how to live a more balanced way after the book. I really love these two characters I just wanted to dump all these thoughts somewhere I have more but there's too many and they are hard to put down and they are just swirling around. Also yeah I just finished reading solitaire at 3am and I don't regret it <3 <3

My favourite quotes/lines from Solitaire by Alice Oseman (spoilers warning!)
I have many more favourite quotes, these are just the less depressing ones :)
All the people are chatting and laughing and smiling and it sort of makes me feel a bit sad, like I’m watching them through a dirty window.
I guess Solitaire think they’re being intellectual and deep. Making us watch that video and writing with such eloquence, like people who think that they’re hilarious for using the word ‘thus’ in school essays. It half makes me laugh and half makes me want to shoot them.
“Just one one thing.” I stare at him, hoping that it’s enough to paralyse, if not kill him.
“Are you going to try to talk to people tonight?” she asks.       “Is that an actual question or an order?”         “An order.”       “I make no promises.”
“I asked if you were all right. You look like you’re having a mid-life crisis.”    “It’s not a mid-life crisis. It’s just a life crisis.”
Michael cuts the cake into cubes, not slices, and, when I query him on this, he simply replies, “I don’t like to conform to typical cake-cutting convention.”
We visit all the antique shops. I play on the second-hand violin and I manage to remember a surprisingly large number of pieces. Michael jumps in on a piano, and we jam until the shop owners decide we’re too annoying and chuck us out.
We find this amazing kaleidoscope. It’s wooden and slides outwards like a telescope and we take it in turns gazing at the patterns until Michael decides to buy it. It’s expensive too, I ask him why he bought it. He says because he didn’t like the thought of no one ever looking into it.
“When you and Lucas are finished… canoodling.” He loves his eyebrows up and down.      I slowly shake my head. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone use that word in real life.”       “Well then,” he says. “I’m glad I’ve just made your day that bit more special.”
“Happiness,” he says, “is the price of profound thought.”      “Who’s that quote from?” I ask. He winks. “Me.”
“I think a lot of people wish for disaster because it’s the only thing with the power to turn heads.”
“I think I’ve loved you since I met you,” he says as we draw apart. “I just mistook it for curiosity.”    “Not only is that hideously untrue,” I say, feeling like I’m about to pass out, “but that is also the dumbest romcom line I’ve ever had to endure. And I’ve endured many. What with me being such a fabulous guy magnet.”

i absolutely love that Tori already knows that Michael is going to be in her life for a long time (hopefully and very very probably till the end)
"He'll say he's fine with it now but in like two years he'll start having regrets"
she knows they're going to be in each others life always and forever

there are no happy people.
One of the main themes of Alice’s books is that there are no happy people. In Solitaire, Tori says it and thinks it throughout the book, and Alice continues with that theme throughout all of their books. In solitaire, there are no happy people. Micheal isn’t happy, Charlie isn’t happy, Lucas isn’t happy, Becky isn’t happy, Tori isn’t happy. There are no happy people. Radio silence, there are no happy people. Aled isn't happy, Frances isn't happy, Dan isn't happy, Carys isn't happy. There are no happy people. Loveless, there are no happy people. Pip isn't happy, Rooney isn't happy, Sunil isn't happy, Jason isn’t happy, Georgia isn’t happy. There are no happy people. In I was born for this, there are no happy people. Rowan isn't happy, Juliet isn't happy, Angel isn't happy, Lister isn't happy, Jimmy isn't happy. There are no happy people. Heartstopper, there are no happy people. Nick isn't happy, Tao isn't happy, Elle isn't happy, Tara isn't happy, Darcy isn't happy, Charlie isn’t happy. There are no happy people. In every one of Alice’s novels, she starts with a character who isn't happy and knows it, who isn't happy and doesn’t know what to do about it or how to help it. And then throughout the novels, the character learns more about the people around them and realizes that, there are no happy people. Everyone they thought was happy and had perfect lives, doesn’t. And then towards the end of the novel, the character feels less alone in their sadness because they realize they are not the only one. There are no happy people, and that’s what can make the not-happy people happy again.

The way Becky—the normally fashionable and put together teenager—rushes to school at 6 in the morning with no makeup, her hair in a messy bun, and in Superman pyjamas just for Tori. The way she admits to be “putting on a smile” for her friends to seem “normal”. The way Tori finally realizes that perhaps Becky is as deranged as she is. That perhaps they aren’t so different after all, and that her best friend is willing to do anything for her.
