Do you have any tips on drawing the Swatchlings?
frankly i am happy that i have gotten good enough at drawing these bird boys (gender neutral) that someone wants my opinions. anyway
i see a lot of fun ways to draw swatchlings tbh and i don't really know what you want tips on Specifically so i will just make notes on a few of the main things i think about when i draw them, most importantly: just make them bitches broad and fluffy, man. they're all canonically Ripped, but an important thing to remember is that they are likely completely covered in feathers! that's going to smooth out those muscular details, so you wont be able to see them, just the broadness of them.
my style is all based in gesture and shapes, so i use a lot of blocks so they look nice 'n sturdy. it's okay if you don't nail the anatomy on the sketch, i am constantly nudging things around all the way into the coloring phase trying to get the shapes right. frankly i would probably bulk out even this Example Bird if i were drawing them all the way. i usually add more fluff or muscle or chub or whatever when i detail them but the absolute bare bones of them is dedicated to blockie
i give mine these sort of vestigial wings on their arms to make them look softer, and i think about how feathers move and stick out on real birds to help inform how they'll sit on these birds, too. and i carry the soft, pointed feather shapes into the fingers so they also look soft.
tip for drawing Soft: don't get caught up making too many individual strands or feathers, soft things tend to come together in big tufts. you want big gentle shapes, not a bunch of little ones. unless you want your bird to look wet or scared in which case you're doing a great job and you've probably just drawn spamton instead
their faces are really tricky so i think of them as these kinda... non-euclidean semi-hollow pentagonal cones. there's five "planes" with the top two dedicated to eyes and the bottom three dedicated to mouth placement. sometimes you can see the far eye even though, in real life, you would not be able to see that "plane" of their face. you don't always have to understand things sometimes they just look cool, especially when characters are cybernetic birds made out of Magical Darkness. there is no rule about when to draw one or two eyes. it's just whatever looks better.
biggest and bestest tip of all about drawing swatchlings! very important! write this one down in your most favorite gel pen and Really Big! give them either tails, or tail coats. i don't care that canon has neither, canon is wrong. you can switch it out, even - my birds have tail coats as part of their standard uniforms but they can wear their real tails out on special occasions.
lastly, if you want to stick closer to a canon interpretation, i would not try to make the birds too unique, when they're on the job anyway - they like being coordinated! tasque manager is very particular about keeping them coordinated as well. but if you just want to have fun then you can make your birds as fun and unique as you want :) even though i draw them all about the same i personally love love love seeing super funky swatchling designs, making them different colors and species and such.
course summary:
make them Large. make them Fluffy. use really broad, blocky shapes and draw big, thick tufts of feathers instead of trying to detail them too much.
their heads are silly magic nonsense. draw a triangle and get funky with it. no rules, only vibes. if it vibes it stays
they always need some kind of tail or tail equivalent and i don't care what Anybody else says
if you want to follow canon, draw all the birds except swatch just about the same. if you're just here for a good time, throw that out completely and have fun with it.

the designs i have in mind are kind of a whole spectrum from like working off existing costumes for the different aliens to totally winging it but ive had an idea to draw klingons in something inspired by the thierry mugler macbeth costumes for sooo long and then um also just kinda doing whatever i love inventing things that make no sense costume wise for bajorans tho i wanna go for more natural real clothes look but with weird asymmetrical pattern work and lots of warm tones ive had this collection of very dramatic vulcan hairstyle inspiration saved as references for sooo long and already a bunch of vulcan costume sketches from my failed attempt at making a dress up game i have this fun idea of a giant fluffy white fur coat on an andorian because tbh tho i think black leather is very fun i am trying to change things up and i have multiple black leather ideas for klingons and like wheres the andorian cold weather fashion oh other klingon idea i really love the weird spinal cord they have on their military uniforms i wanna try and incorporate other stylized bones as well as try some kind of muscle cuirass mixed with goth fashion.. something really crazy pattern wise for the ferengi gotta really push the limits of taste on that front also excited to tackle elaborate cardassian hairstyles and tbh i dont think i could invent a betazoid character as entertaining and stylish as lwaxana so i will maybe just try my hand at designing something she would wear which idk if i am worthy of such a task oh and i have some fun ideas for like 60s sci fi looking stylish borg very mod metropolis cuz i think it would be fun :3 as well as some weird biological and mechanical hr geiger art stuff for the borg queen mayhaps anyways i somehow got the vision for almost all of this while lying in this insane not really sleep not really awake state tossing and turning in the dark after sleeping for 10 hours but still gripped by the sleep demon i was having coherent thoughts but only about star trek zine projects i was also writing out theoretical recipes in my head during this 2 hour devils awakeness thrown from the bounds of sleep but not embraced by the waking world either situation

Platonic Matchup: Hisirdoux Casperan
Well Ritz seems our resident wizard is your destined best friend/ platonic soulmate. As someone who's lived a long time and has come across every manner of magic he is very familiar with changelings. He knows your a very oppressed race and is glad to know you somehow slipped through the Orders fingers and are just living your life as a half human half troll. He's very protective of you and makes sure to keep an eye out so none of the magic things of Arcadia bother you. He respects that your more netreual in this war but he won't hesitate to hurt one of the bad guys if they threaten you.
As someone who suffers anxiety himself he's there if you need someone to talk too. He always has treats for your bad days and understands being a more passive person even if you have that anger bubbling underneath. If you ever feel like it's a bad day Douxie will cast a sound bubble so you can just scream and let it all out. When your done he has snacks and blankets so you two can make a book fort in front of one of his fireplaces in his store and drink tea together as you decompress.
He'll teach you to fight and defend yourself if you don't already know how too. He may look tiny but he's actually pretty strong and he'll match your strength. He's fought with all manners of magic and weaponry so if you want to learn how to use a spear, a javelin, or something else he'll be there every step of the way so you don't get hurt learning.
Douxie would love to match outfits with you!!! Those purples, dark blues, and navy colors your talking about are some of his favorites outside of black. If you were ever interested he'd dye the tips of your hair navy blue/purple so you could match. He'll totally share his punk clothes with you and dress you up if you ask as well. Also if your ever cold he carries an extra hoodie on him so that belongs to you now (beware the familiar cat hair though. Archie tends to shed)
As a fellow artist he encourages your work and is very interested even if it's just some spare doodles. Anything you draw him is hung proudly in his little apartment and he likes looking at it to remind him of his best friend when your not around. If you want to improve your work and share it with him he's the best guy to give your critique and as someone who lived through several artistic periods he knows exactly what to say to help you improve. He also enjoys his fair share of comics and has a large stash so if you ever want to borrow some to read he's more than happy to lend them to you. You can chill in a quiet corner of his bookstore and enjoy any novels/comics you find around.
He's not the biggest fan of Steve at first but the big lug is growing on him along with his dorky friend Eli. If your friends with Steve you likely know about the CreepSlayerz. As a changeling it's even more likely your apart of the little ragtag group. If you are, expect Douxie to extend his training to your friends and take you all under his wing. He'll teach you to protect yourself from the darker parts of Arcadia hidden from regular people. Under him you'll learn all about the supernatural and exterrestial in no time.
He has his own rock collection!!! Different crystals, minerals, and just cool looking rocks he keeps for whatever reason. Some have ritual purposes for magic but most are just things he likes keeping close for fun. So if you ever want to swap with him or look at his collection your more than welcome too.
All in all you two are two peas in a pod. As long as you can handle all his dad jokes and big brother overprotectiveness you should be fine :)

omfg dude... i've got two eps left of lucifer s6. but so far i am already absolutely blown away at the writing?? maze and eve's relationship stuff and ella dealing with finally realising the truth?? RORY— can't wait to see how that plot line ends. amenadiel dealing with institutional racism as a cop is the most impactful arc to me rn, it's kinda strange that it took them this long to examine the issue again, but i'm glad that they pointed out so many levels to the issue when they finally did, and in such simple ways. those episodes were so good on their own didn't even feel like it was 'lucifer' necessarily? had me on the edge of my seat with the stomach sickening suspense of reiben fucking shit up ugh
tbh you're so damn right??????
this entire season was literally so goddamn satisfying in every sense of the word. like shows rarely go this all out for their final seasons and have it all be satisfying nd completely go with the flow of the show all in one go, and the Lucifer team managed to do it in spades.
amenadiel experiencing racial bias - especially within the police force where nobody really likes to bring it up - and the lady who was working with him? the lady cop? hearing her talk about how kids feared her and what she does just because of the uniform she wears because "the uniform took their mother away, or it took their brother away"........that all broke me ngl.
and honestly, i was wondering why they were keeping ella out of the loop for so damn long because she is an integral part and member of lucifer's entire story, and then they have her find out all the major plot points through reading linda's fanfiction first draft of her book 😂😂 it's fucking amazing. and of course they would bring her into everything now during probably the most unexpected arc of the show's whole run, which i find really cool.
and every single fucking character gets their own happy ending/gets what they want in the end.
lucifer finally realizes that he can actually, definitively help people but not by doing what everyone else says that he should do.....but by doing it in his own way.
amenadiel gets to ascend to god's throne like he said he wanted to back in season four/five (i believe???? i know he said he wanted to, i just forgot where lol)
linda and charlie are happier than ever and charlie's wings came in!!!!
maze and eve worked through their relationship and trust issues to finally see the other as they truly were, and are now kicking ass and taking names together.
ella gets to help other girls go into STEM fields and become just like her - an inspiration to their communities - and she's getting closer to dan's friend in the process.
speaking of dan, he finally gets to be in heaven - AS HE FUCKIN SHOULD - and finally, finally gets to be with charlotte.
rory finally understands why lucifer was gone for her whole life, and relinquishes the hatred that she had for him.
and for chloe......despite the hardship that's gonna come with raising rory without telling her why lucifer had left them, she knows that it's for the best cause in this life and the next. and when she finally passes, she gets to be with him for the rest of however long, solving problems as the partners they were born to be.
i've never been this satisfied with a show's series finale because it's just so damn good. everything gets resolved, everyone gets what they want, everyone's satisfied.
this show is a goddamn masterpiece.

Maybe it was his midnight-blue hair, or perhaps it was his ocean eyes, but the very moment I laid my eyes upon him my mind immediately thought, “Wow, he’s very good looking… charming... I really like his vibe.” That was the first reason why he piqued my interest, rather, the initial reason why I fancied him. My eyes were drawn to him and the fact that Kay bombarded me with a truckload of his pictures didn’t help at all, I just fell deeper into the hole. But as if that wasn’t enough, she started spamming me with utapri songs and I fell in love immediately. They are all such good singers but there’s one of them who sticks out to me the most, as expected, it’s Tokiya. His voice has this intricate and refined softness that seemed to caress my ears and touch my soul. He has such a sweet (and might I add a handsome) voice, kudos to Miyano Mamoru for that.
So I started watching the anime and through that, I got to know him better. At first, he seems cold with an air of loneliness and uneasiness dawning on him. But as the series progresses, I discovered that he’s a good-natured, warm, and dedicated person who loves singing and music with all his heart and all. He’s hardworking, dedicating everything to his craft. He has pride in it, so when he was told that his singing has no ‘heart’ it affected him a lot. That caused a lot of distress in his system, and the fact that his company is pushing him to pursue other things than being a singer added to that. His passion for his craft is burning, a fire that no one could put out. That’s one of the things that I love about him. He’s dedicated to everything he does. He’s a perfectionist but he’s also a caring person who cares a lot about the starish members. He’s genuinely a good person but that doesn’t mean he’s perfect. He strives for improvement and development all the time. He helps the members whenever they need. Most importantly, his attitude towards his passion is respectable and admirable.
I might’ve said a lot of things but I guess that only means I love a lot of things about him. He’s such a beautiful soul that inspires me to be more dedicated to my passion, to make my dreams come true no matter what it takes. His path towards his dream was rough, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows but that’s life, isn’t it? Despite that, he kept walking towards his dream. He’s admirable, respectable, and irresistibly loveable. That being said, I love all the things that made his character; that made Tokiya Ichinose be the kind of character that he is right now.
PS. Miyano Mamoru played a big part too. His insane talent gave life to Tokiya’s character.

When I first watched the Utapri anime like 6 years ago, having a best boy didn't cross my mind. At first, I was just most interested in Tokiya out of all the boys because I just thought he looked cool. I liked how mysterious he seemed and also, his hair, probably just because it was blue tbh. Either way, good design.
However, what really got me attached to him wasn't his looks. I then liked Tokiya's serious personality. I like how he starts off cold and stoic but how throughout the games and anime, he slowly softens up. I didn't just like his personality, I could also relate to his perfectionism and hard-working side, even when he exhausts himself, which is something I admit I also have. I continue to relate to him now after all this time, and that's why he's such a good character to me.
Besides that, his songs are nice to listen to and he has just a very pleasant voice. It's nice just to go listen to his voice after a long day. In a way, liking Tokiya also got me into the whole Utapri franchise: made some friends, made a couple of good memes, all that kinda stuff.
Also, I feel like it's a crime not to mention this so: he thicc. Like, dang, no wonder the guy only eats salads because all the fats he eats goes straight to that ass of his. (I am sorry that you had to read that.)
Overall, I just think he's neat. To me, he's relatable and has a nice character development. Tokiya is and will continue to be my best boy. :)
REN JINGUJI

Ren Jinguji, the 5th member of Starish is without any shame my favorite character of the Uta no prince sama series. Though often disregarded Ren is and always will be my most favorite and I firmly believe that he has one of the most, if not the most depth in his character. I love Ren a lot however because of his surface charismatic attitude he is usually labeled as a “playboy” or a “lothario”. This is not correct and it should never define him, as he actually is one of the most gentle and compassionate characters of the series. Ren has a very deep surface characterization and personality that is never usually recognized unless you truly take the time to understand WHY Ren acts the way he does, and WHY he makes the choices that he makes. My favorite part about loving characters is being able to accept them for their demons and embrace what others would see as the “imperfections” in them. That Is the best way to truly love them. I love Ren because of his motives, choices, and most of all his passionate loving heart. Although the pain he hides and the personality of who he really is, is hidden under a mask of charisma, he never loses himself deep within.
He’s misunderstood, but he’s beautiful. He’s so deep, from the everlasting devotion to loving his passed on mother, to always cherishing memories and the past bond he had with his childhood best friend Masato, to going against what his brother wants of him because he wants to fight to have a choice and to be passionate about something that he wants to love, because HE wants to love it. Ren didn’t have the love that a lot of people had at such a young age, he made a path for himself and along the way succumbed to the human faults that we all falter from within the hardest times in our life or even dicult events. He almost gave up, just as I know many of us had almost done before, as I know and can relate to, and still do now.
But he dusted himself o and picked up where he left o, making himself happy from once the feeling of being a hollow shell with no reason why he even existed to realizing that the most important thing in the world to him was cherishing the people who made him see the world in colors and seeking the choices that had been stripped from him at such a young age. He broke free from the chains of his family, his past, and his regrets to spread a beautiful pair of rose wings, his own wings to fly. And I hope he always flies. I will always love him, and wish nothing but the best for him whatever that be.

Ren Jinguji- the sexy, charming and flirty member of the STARISH boys. The youngest of the Jinguji family, a troubled child who grew up without a mother. A person who possesses many charms and is blessed with the gift of beauty. A red rose he was, beautiful yet his thorns are to be avoided. Beneath his passionate and seductive mannerisms there is a boy that craves genuine affection, from the one he truly adores and cherishes.
Ren Jinguji to me initially was one with a beautiful, attractive deep baritone, who is voiced by none other than the legend- Suwabe Junichi himself. The voice is an accurate fit of how this stereotype of a charming bishie should be, youthful and sensitive, and at times warm and seductive. His portrayal brings out the appeal of the character, the emotions and thoughts a troubled young adult such as the ‘useless third son’ lived through. Many would see him as a romantic one, one who showers those around him with attention and passion. Within however lives a rebellious soul who distrusts many, but still somehow desires that ray of sunshine that brightens his lonely soul.
Ren Jinguji is one that deserves real love, someone who appreciates him for who he is.
SYO KURUSU

Why do I like Syo, huh? Well, there are a lot of reasons! Some of them are more personal ones. First of all, Syo has always been my best boy, since UtaPri (the anime) exists. So ten long years now.
His fashion style is the first thing I noticed and it immediately intrigued me. I remember that my first thought, after seeing him in season one, was “Woah, he looks really cool!” even though Syo was just in his school uniform! I think what also made me interested in him was his energetic persona. The way he looked up to Ryuya Hyuga and wanted to follow in his footsteps was really sweet to me as well. Syo’s enthusiasm and positive attitude actually encouraged me to become stronger in a way too, if I’m being honest. I, personally, have always found his songs motivating and they made me feel better. I really came to love Syo in his episode in season one. When he talked about his childhood and how weak he was, I really felt with him. From that moment on I cheered him on and Syo definitely became my favorite character. My interest never wavered over the next seasons either.
I also have personal reasons why I love him so much. I just feel very connected and relate to him a lot, y’know? We have quite a few things in common. Syo and I have the same eye color, we have both played the violin since we were little, and were born weak and with pretty much the same health and heart issues. I like to say that Syo “saved” me, which is true. There is also the fact that the blonde and I are both on the shorter side (and regularly get teased for it), too! Though, I’m even a little shorter than him.
But to be more positive again, there is just so much more to him than meets the eye at first! Syo is more than just the stereotypical short sporty character. He really cares for his friends and wants the best for them. Syo’s friendship with every STARISH member is different but still close. He’s also protective of the ones around him. Syo really cares about his little twin brother too, which can be seen in the games and the few times he talked about him in the anime. Syo’s big heart easily balances out his, sometimes, tsundere behavior and I love him for that. This blonde idol is just a great guy and deserves all the love he’s getting and more.
Seriously, stan Syo Kurusu, guys!

Syo Kurusu is my favourite idol within the utapri games and any other form of media pertaining to the franchise. He is my favourite idol because of several factors, one of which being that his voice actor is Hiro Shimono, who voices Zenitsu from Demon slayer and Lucifer from “Devil is a part timer”. Syo is a very outgoing character and is talented in many aspects athletically. Born with a heart disease, he continues to persevere throughout the myriads of life’s problems in front of him.
He’s extremely outgoing and is proficient in the martial art of Karate and desires to strengthen his body more than what it is currently. He is best friends with Natsuki and can communicate with each other proficiently. Syo is my favourite character within the franchise because of his resolve, perseverance and great chemistry with Natsuki and his teammates. Hiro Shimono did the character justice by making his voice one of young, adventurous and energetic. With that said, Syo is a character I truly enjoy within the franchise and wish to see more of him.
CECIL AIJIMA

Greetings, princes and princesses, and welcome to a world of princes, questionably talking cats, and magic! I’m of course talking about Cecil Aijima, our foreign prince of UtaPri! So, why do I like Cecil Aijima? It’s borderline ridiculous, but it’s because of Cecil’s birthday. More specifically, Cecil’s Birthday Cruise card. But, I should start at the beginning.
Back when I first watched the anime, I thought Cecil was a little bit of a brat towards literally everyone, and one of my least favorites at the time. After watching through the rest of the anime though, I started to like him a lot more than I did before. To me, he had matured a lot after season 2, and never turned back to that bratty self. And so, when playing SL, he might not have been my favorite, but I didn’t hate him. Then, that one fateful day, I decided to pull in his birthday gacha. To my surprise, I had gotten the card in my first pull! Then the story dragged me into the Cecil Appreciation Group. I thought the story was incredibly cute. Then I got more Cecil cards so I could read more stories. Then the cycle repeated itself again. And now, well, if I’m writing this, I think you know what happened to me afterwards. I’ll be here, doing my best for him.

The boy with childish like demeanor but continues to have a heart of gold for his friends and wonderful composer.
I remember first watching Utapri in middle school and questioning. "Well shit- this is my life now..." and I didn't really have a favorite character at the time. I was always bouncing between characters like Syo, Otoya, even the teachers. However it was season 2 that made me realize who my true favorite was. Despite his at first cocky nature when he was first introduced, Cecil to me was amazing! His singing was magical, his origins even more fascinating. You wouldn't think Utapri would turn that down the magic route but it somehow did.
As the seasons went on, and as I got more into the series, he just became more of a love to me. His kindness and child-like nature and curiosity, he felt different than the other characters.
I love the other characters, yes but him?
Something about him just felt right! He not only seems to be a protector for those he cares about but also feels like he would be the best person to be around. Always wanting to do anything new and exciting just to peak his curiosity and to learn more. Ever since then, he has always been my favorite. The one and only Annapolis Prince, Aijima Cecil.

hockey!jj: road to the nhl
the ncaa and the stress of being an nhl prospect
@sunnypogue and i are back at it folks - and with this, we’ve finally established all of jj’s backstory
(the next thing we’re working on is the masterlist linking all of our hockey!jj and coho!rafe content - we’re posting on both of our blogs and @sunnypogue has a ton of coho!rafe stuff written already for you to catch up on his backstory)

Ward knew the Major-Junior leagues were a great opportunity and that they funneled players straight into the NHL - JJ’s end goal
The OHL came knocking as soon as JJ was draft eligible, but the idea of leaving the outer banks during high school to move somewhere way up north to play with even richer kids than he already did was intimidating to him
Then Rafe started looking at college hockey and opened the ncaa option to JJ, which he much preferred
As soon as Ward learned that JJ was considering college hockey, he started contacting coaches from the top hockey schools in the nation
Ward had a whole whiteboard full of schools and corresponding contacts posted up in his office
He sent out JJ’s highlight tape to any D1 school he could get in touch with
(JJ was oblivious - just playin’ hockey & working at the mechanics in his free time)
Actually, outside of playing hockey, JJ had very little to do with the process
Ward would send the emails, field the calls, etc.
Ward even accompanied him on a few recruiting trips, asking all the right questions.
(Did Ward miss one of Rafe’s games to attend the BU recruiting trip? Yes.)
And it paid off - JJ had a lot of college offers from some really good schools
Most of which JJ had no idea existed - Quinnipac? Northeastern? Clarkson?
Of course, there were a few he recognized - Michigan, BU, Denver
(tbh his favorite was Arizona State, but Ward refused because - “what kind of hockey did they play on the West Coast?”)
(JJ imagined it was similar to the hockey they played in North Carolina, but kept his mouth shut - for once.)
After much debate, he decided to attend University of North Dakota
JJ had grown up watching Toews & Oshie college highlights - he couldn’t help but have a soft spot for the school
Plus, the concept of living in North Dakota was hilarious to him
Ward moved JJ in mid-June, sticking around for an additional week to “keep an eye on him”
Despite Ward practically adopting JJ, he still didn’t really trust him
JJ caught Ward hovering at his practices, chatting up the coaching staff, the Athletic Director, his RA - JJ could only imagine what Ward was instructing them to do.
JJ dealt with it the way he dealt with most Ward-related things - he put his head down and played hockey.
JJ’s birthday was mid-September, so he had the luxury of being able to enroll at UND without worrying about the upcoming draft - he wasn’t eligible for another year.
UND was great, the guys were really nice and it was like a fresh start for him - no Ward, no Luke.
No one knew he was just a poor kid from some beach town on the Atlantic Coast with a deadbeat dad - he was “just JJ”
Road trips were his favorite - he’d never really gotten to travel in this region of the US before
He loved the bus rides with his teammates - even the early morning ones.
Plus, his teammates actually LIKED him - unlike his travel team back in NC, who never really embraced him as “one of their own”
(Ward said they were jealous - JJ knew better.)
The team was significantly more laidback than his travel team - despite being one of the best teams in the country
Most of the guys weren’t actively trying for the NHL and were a lot more chill which helped his nerves
Some of the older guys were already drafted, allowed to return back to UND for a year or two before joining their respective clubs
They took JJ under their wing, recognizing his talent immediately
They were always willing to hang around after practice, offering an opportunity for JJ to get a couple more drills in, or hit the gym with him a little extra.
They were full of advice for what to do and what not to do as a prospect
One thing they all advised? Attend the combine
JJ got an invite, late his freshman year, opting to attend despite being pretty unknown.
No one was really talking about him, this scrappy kid from North Carolina, who somehow got a full ride to UND.
He had a pretty impressive combine despite being on the smaller side; the physical testing went well, even though he almost threw up after the Wingate Test

The team interviews were harder, he was unfamiliar with it, unlike the junior hockey boys, his only experience coming from meeting with college coaches
JJ definitely said the Wrong Thing more than once
Ward had always handled the harder questions, the harder conversations - suddenly JJ was getting asked about his attitude issues, what he thought about legalizing marijuana, what he would do if there was a 25 foot python in a room with him - JJ was LOST.
(Also if he got ONE MORE question about his size, he was going to Lose It.)
He felt really alienated because they all seemed to know each other; it was like an exclusive clique.
Thankfully, one of his older teammates from UND was there too - they stuck together despite not really being good friends.
Somehow, he survived the combine (even after he snarked off in an interview when they questioned him about his height - JJ aptly responded with a “well, I’m taller than you, aren’t I?”)
Ward did not like that one.
His prospect status grew. Teams were very interested in him and he got on the media’s radar. Analysts predicted him going late first round, early second even.
Some of his UND teammates got wind of his newfound popularity and googled his name + elite prospects to check out his page
JJ was a little astounded to see how in depth they’d gone on his stats and a little embarrassed by all the teasing, but it was never mean-spirited
Kinda helped him feel like one of the guys which was unfamiliar after being ostracized in his younger years for not having the same economic status
JJ felt a little sick when he entered the draft.
He had been having a recurring dream where he attended the first and second rounds, only to not get picked at all, left sitting in the stands, desperately waiting to hear his name.
Deep down he knew he’d get selected by someone, but there was the inherent fear that teams hated him and would pass on him.
What if he didn’t get picked at all?
Of course, several teams were interested in him - he had a great freshman year, an excellent showing in the Frozen Four (UND lost in the semis, but JJ really put the team on his back), and his name was popping up all over Twitter as a “sleeper first round pick”
He had been in contact with scouts from Philadelphia, Columbus, Nashville and Dallas - he knew they were interested.
Ward regularly kept up with JJ, checking in to make sure his grades were good and he was getting his workouts in to stay in top form for the draft.
“Scouts are going to start attending your games, if they haven’t already.”
“They’ve even popped up at a few of Rafe’s games - they’ll be at yours.”
(That’s how JJ found out Rafe was interested in trying out for the Canes after graduation)
JJ felt stupid, but he was really praying Carolina wasn’t interested in him - he’d rather go undrafted than end up on a team with Rafe again
Hell, he was hoping they wouldn’t be in the same division, much less the same conference - the less he saw of Rafe, the better.
Silly boy thought he’d be in the AHL
JJ didn’t attend the draft because he wasn’t predicted to go super early (also, you know - the nightmares)
He ended up staying in North Dakota to keep practicing and working out with some of his teammates who stuck around
The night of the first round, the group of them ordered food and hung out in one of the boys apartments to watch together. JJ was pretty sure he wouldn’t go in the first round, but his curiosity won out.
He sat in a corner chair, staring blankly at his hands the majority of the evening, too nervous to really even watch
To his surprise, his name was called late in the first round, the Dallas Stars using the 28th pick on him.
(JJ was pretty dejected at this point - Philly and Nashville had passed him up, despite showing a ton of interest earlier in the week)
He was struck still and wordless, barely registering the boys jumping up and down, shaking him, and screaming all around him
“Fuck, dude, you get to play with Seguin and Benn”
Soon after the first round ended, the Stars GM called and he put it on speaker to talk to him
“We love your game, son, we feel you’ll be a good fit for our team. I’m calling to invite you to prospect camp this year, we want the opportunity to see what you can really do. Can’t wait to see you in a Stars uniform.”
Ward called him next, already talking about getting JJ an agent and flight details to get down to Dallas for camp. It was all a blur, and the fluttering in JJ’s stomach got stronger as he realized he’d really made it.
Well, almost made it.
Prospect camp was insane. He felt like he barely slept, it was just eating, media, and hockey. The facilities were amazing and the other guys were so talented.
The competitive atmosphere was nothing like he’d ever felt before, and he thrived, consistently rising to the challenge.
Everyone wanted an invite to training camp, but spots were limited.
The practices were on another level - JJ was bone tired the whole week, body aching from the constant skating & checking.
Scrimmages were fun - JJ loved playing with guys outside the NCAA, enjoying the challenge that came with playing with talented, older prospects.
At the end, he got an invite to training camp
Playing with actual NHLers, some that he’d even grown up watching, was insane.
He was legitimately starstruck when Joe Pavelski checked him into the boards during a practice scrimmage - it took him a couple of seconds to recover.
JJ was the youngest at training camp by far - living out of a suitcase in a random Dallas hotel, trying to figure out whether he needed to re-enroll at UND or not, fielding daily calls from Ward - it was stressful.
(And apparently, his stress was palpable, because the next day, after practice, Tyler Seguin smacked him on the head, demanding that he meet him for dinner that night at Nick & Sam’s)
(JJ did not know what the fuck Nick & Sam’s was, but he figured it out)
Tyler sat JJ down, ordered him a big ol’ steak, & told JJ to tell him what was on his mind because “you’ve been looking constipated for about a week, now.”
JJ just...unloads on him. Tells him everything he’s stressed about - leaving school, moving to Dallas, whether he’s actually good enough to stay on NHL roster - he’s nearly panting by the time he’s done talking.
Tyler, shockingly, is an excellent listener. He offers advice about signing a contract & reassures JJ that he’s talented (“dude, you’re not going down to Austin. They’d be insane.”).
They also discuss the merits of maybe playing an extra season of NCAA before committing fully to the NHL because he was young and it was intimidating
Tyler gave his perspective and mistakes he made as a bit of a warning to starting too young
If anything, the dinner made JJ more confused about his future - would he fuck everything up if he waited another year? What if he got injured at UND, and never actually made the NHL?
He didn’t sleep that night - or the night after.
Ultimately, Ward ended up deciding for him, pushing him into signing an ELC & leaving UND.
“At least you’re guaranteed some money, son. That’s gotta be enough inspiration.”

Rating Every Magia Record Design 3
Continuing.
Hey wow I have to split this into parts because of image limits, wild. Anyway let’s just get right into it.
Shinobu Oshino
And hey it’s our first Monogatari girl! Immediately I’m on the fence about this one, because despite not having met her in Monogatari yet (I’ve been 5 episodes into Bake for about 2 and a half years now) I do want to give it credit because I like Shinobu’s outfit in general, and hey the bat wings and donuts, those are Shinobu references, and that’s pretty cute. But then I also think the shape and colours are pretty boring, it looks like a magical girl outfit that you’d see be worn by a show within w magical girl, if that makes sense. Basically I like Shinobu’s design but this outfit doesn’t really do her loads of justice. So, 6/10?
Suruga Kanbaru
And hey our next Monogatari girl, I basically know nothing about her other than she has a monkey motif and is athletic. Hey that makes all the sports tape on her left are a cute touch, and then the monkey ears and tail also exist I suppose. I like this outfit both more and less than Shinobu’s, because it looks more distinctive and capes are always poggers, but it is admittedly less my style and I like Kanbaru’s design less than Shinobu’s to begin with too. Eh, 6/10.
Homura Akemi
And here we have our first appearance of a non-variant Holy Quintet member! And it’s an instant 10/10 by the way, I love literally everything about this design. Homura’s so fucking pretty, this outfit is so pretty, the shape is perfect, the dulled colours and almost school uniform look to it convey the idea that being a magical girl is secondary to Homura, she doesn’t place much value in it so her costume lacks flair to reflect that, it’s amazing. Like literally I have 0 issues with this and just love everything about it, genuinely perfect character design.
Mitama Yakumo (Haregi ver.)
Honestly better than her regular design, this is a stupid pretty Haregi and I love that the coordinator window is integrated into the pattern. Plus the like, frills at the bottom of the Haregi and on her sleeves look sorta like what she has on her regular design too, so it’s a faithful translation from magical girl outfit into Haregi. Like I said with Sayaka I’m not super into Haregis but this is sill a solid 8/10 from me.
Holy Alina
God, where do I even start with this one? First of all, I like it. It’s good at feeling Christmasy with the colours and the stars and those weird fuckin bauble heads plus I think goats are Christmasy? But then it looks totally like something she could wear any day of the year which is nice. I also like weird Inu Curry-isms so the weird shit all over this design is cool and I like it. I also like that this design does feel like an upgraded Alina in a sense - the skirt is the same shape and retains the bow and pair of chains, and then the entire top is basically the same but just fancier and with poofier shoulders. I do think regular Alina’s design is more my aesthetic though so this has to be stuck at 9/10.
Tsubasa Hanekawa
I’ve been doing first-name surname order for consistency’s sake but god does it feel weird writing out Tsubasa Hanekawa instead of Hanekawa Tsubasa. Anyway, meh for this outfit. It has the Shinobu problem of looking like a show within a show magical girl design, sans just having a bunnygirl suit for the top, and I don’t think that really goes with the rest of the outfit tbh. Obviously it’s like that for fanservice, and I’m not gonna complain about the fucking Monogatari girls having fanservicey designs, but I’m not really into Hanekawa’s tits so like, eh, 5/10 from me.
Mayoi Hachikuji
Oh I like this one a lot! They kinda just took Mayoi’s normal outfit and transformed it to look magical girly, it feels very retro in that regard which I really like! And then it’s also just super duper cute! Tbh it’s still not entirely my style and I prefer the general designs of the other Monogatari girls but as far as being converted into Magia Record designs goes, I’d say Mayoi’s the winner so far, 7/10.
Nagisa Momoe
I’m gonna be honest right, the key reason I prefer the Valentine’s alt is literally because I think it’s cuter and has a more obvious theme. But I still like this design and think it’s cute. The puffy shorts feel candy like and the colour scheme is generally quite candy-like, fitting for the eventual Sweets Witch. I think my biggest problem with this design is that she’s the 6th member of the main series’ cast, but she doesn’t fit in at all. She’s not got the matching hair and eye colours, her colour scheme is a bit less clear, she’s properly a loli, and her obvious match is Mami but she doesn’t contrast Mami in the same way Homura does Madoka and Sayaka does Kyouko. So basically my problems with her design are all meta. I guess I’d still go 7/10 because it is nice but like, I’d like her look more if she was from a spinoff or something.
Nadeko Sengoku
Well she doesn’t look like a show within a show girl, but she is still quite plain. These are some nice oranges and the outfit has a good shape to it but like, eh, the only response this gets out of me is “cute.” and it’s not even an excited cute or anything it’s just, oh yeah this sure is. 5/10.
Ultimate Madoka
Why are her eyes closed and why is there so much white space? I don’t know either. Anyway, 10/10. Noticing a theme for the Holy Quintet? This is just the ultimate god form for a magical girl, it’s exactly as poofy and elegant and extravagant as it needs to be and I love that her hair just doesn’t fit in frame ever again. Plus there’s the obvious prettiness of what’s inside that dress - the entire universe baby! Absolutely stunning, 10/10 again.
Iroha Tamaki (Mizugi ver.)
You can tell this was like the first swimsuit they did because it’s not overdesigned to hell and back lol. That might actually work against this though, because for as cute as this swimsuit is, it’s probably a little too plain, maybe? It’s like, everything that makes it feel magical girly is just an accessory as opposed to part of the swimsuit, which would be my preferred method. Or, maybe it wouldn’t? I don’t know, cause this is really cute and easy on the eyes and Iroha’s super pretty to begin with, Let’s just, 8/10. It is really cute.
Homura Akemi (Mizugi ver.)
This one both does and doesn’t have the same problem as Iroha’s, because it mostly looks way too plain for me to think it’s a really cool swimsuit, but then she retains the bow on her back which is similar to something Homu’s regular design has, which is more effort than was put in turning Iroha’s outfit from magical girl to swimsuit. Tbh though I actually don’t find this swimsuit as cute or, well, any other adjective as I do Iroha’s, which is odd since it’s fuckin, Homura Akemi yo, she’s my absolute favourite. It almost feels wrong saying this about anything Homura related but, 7/10.
Suzune Amano
Obviously Suzune came first but this design reminds me of Jun Kazari but just like, better executed by way of being less ugly. Anyway this design is like, eh? It’s not really very magical girly beyond the collared thigh-highs and the coat having a sailor fuku collar as well, and I guess the Soul Gem necklace obviously. I guess it’s hot still, colours are nice. Let’s go 6/10.
Liz Hawkwood
Eh, it’s alright I guess? I quite like the very long hair and fat feathered cape combo, but then the front of the design seems very light in comparison, like that cape seems too heavy compared to the rest of it and it’s a bit odd. I also think the front is a little plain, the midriff slit with white lining on the skirt is the only thing breaking up all the plain black in the front, also what’s up with those throwing knives or whatever just, dangling like that? I still think this is okay, decent shape, Liz is pretty, but like, 5/10.
Tart
It’s alright. I think the left arm being as armoured as it is looks a little odd since the rest of her body doesn’t have much armour at all, which Final got away with just by having a smaller glove, but this one’s fuckin huge. Right arm looking very plain even if being unarmoured makes sense still sort of annoys me. And then other than that it’s just a fairly pretty shape, not really over or underdesigned anywhere specific, feels like something you could see a 15th century magical girl wear. 6/10.
Sayaka Miki
Pretty sure I’ve gone on record to say that Sayaka’s magical girl outfit is my favourite character design uh, ever? Like, out of any and every piece of media, this one wins for me. Literally everything about this is absolutely perfect to me, the colours are so damn good and the shape and silhouette are so nice and clean and fucking cape, also because this is the Rebellion design we get the ff in the hair which really gives her previously somewhat bland head some nice charm that ties into her arc, the whole outfit reflects no what sort of magical girl Sayaka wants to be really well, this is just without flaw. Genuine 11/10.
Madoka Kaname (Haregi ver.)
It’s interesting to me that this is covered in Sakura petals of all things. Obviously those are pink and Madoka too is very pink, but Kyouko’s the one with Sakura as her surname, and I can’t say if Mami is specifically associated with sakura petals but they sure look similar to them. Madoka if anything is usually associated with roses I’d say, just looking at her bow. But like, whatever. It still looks nice I guess. I mean this is a pretty haregi and Madoka has a strong design to begin with but I guess like, Sayaka and even Mitama’s haregis felt more like them and like magical girl haregis too, this is sort of just Madoka wearing a pretty haregi but that’s it. Still 8/10 because she really do be cute but Sayaka won this one.
Holy Mami
This is certainly an interesting look. It’s pretty crazy how just taking Mami’s outfit and turning it fully white looks as good as it does, like the shape is just so good to begin with that it can still look strong even without colour, that’s wild. And then we get to the main Holy components of the gigantic fucking cape draped across her entire being, with the ribbons coming out of it over the front to keep it all together, I really like that touch. but yeah the thing itself does look pretty cool and combined with some basic touches of yellow on the main look, we now have a more interesting and Christmasy colour scheme than just pure white, and like with Alina it still feels seasonally appropriate for the entire year, even if Mami looks less like a Christmas tree than Alina did. There’s also the crown which looks nice, better than Yuuna’s crown for sure. Yeah I mean this is sorta just a nice and cool upgraded variation of an already strong design. I do like it less than base Mami but still like, 8/10.
Kazumi
I’ve not read Kazumi so I didn’t know she had no surname lol. Anyway this sure is uh, something. I think he white balls over sorta just look stupid, I get that they balance the black and white a little better but they don’t add to the shape at all, they also seem sorta too cutesy in a design that’s otherwise very much about the fanservice. I like Kazumi’s face and hair and her hat has a realy nice shape, so there’s some compliments. The main standout of this design is that fanservice though. And I think, it doesn’t look so stupid that I can’t take it seriously a la Himika and some others. But it still seems a bit unnecessary and moreover I think it makes this girl look very much not like a Madoka character. And of course I realise she’s by a different character designer and from a spinoff to begin with, but I just think there should’ve been more effort put into making her feel cohesive with the series she occupies. Because as it is she looks like she comes from something way trashier. 5/10 anyway because I’m generally weak to black and white colour schemes I feel.
Kyouko Sakura
Honestly I’d be surprised if you expected me to say anything other than 10/10 here. Kyouko’s design is so brilliant, it’s a great shape, never busy or underdesigned anywhere, they used the literal best red ever as her main red so that’s poggers as fuck, to being her weapon in for a second (since it’s already like the sickest weapon ever) Kyouko in combat animates super duper fucking well and this dress contributes to that, the contrasting yet complimenting elements of how she looks against Sayaka are great too. Once again, 10/10. We’re actually pretty close to the remaining Holy Quintet members so lock in your guesses for score right now!
Homura Akemi (Megane ver.)
I already gave Homura a 10/10 design. This is the exact same design but Homura has different hair and glasses. So basically it’s fucking adorable as hell and now she’s a funny meek cutie loser instead of an absolutely gorgeous stoic badass. Both are valid. 10/10.
Madoka Kaname
So do we all have our guesses for what I’m rating Madoka? If you guessed 10/10, well done! Madoka’s design is what magical girls from shows within in shows wish they could be, hell it’s what regular magical girls from rela shows wish they could be. This is just an actually perfect look, extremely pleasing colours, very identifiable shape, skirt is cute as all fucking hell, and yo this bitch do be having a martyr compelx though so let’s tie that collar right around her neck like a noose. Yeah it’s the little things like that that really elevate this look. Ume Aoki goin off.
Kirika Kure
Is this bitch supposed to be a nightmare in mirrors by the way? Because she is for me. Anyway I’m just not into this, it feels like it has a lot of conflicting elements at play. The tube skirt and collar and tie make me think office worker, but then the massive pointed out collar makes me think drug dealer, but then the massive coat hems make me think magician, but then the frills and white clothing around her waist make me think maid. I just don’t get what she is. 3/10.
Mami Tomoe
And here she is, the last Holy Quintet girl! Everybody’s locks ready? Well, my score for Mami Tomoe is... another 10/10! What a shock. Again just an amazing shape, really delightful colours that give off of all things a light steampunk vibe, I like that her sleeves mirror her thigh-highs, I love the fluff coming from her hat, feels very commander-esque befitting a leader lke her, that one thing about her tits suggesting motherliness amonst the other Holy Quintet members, the works. Mami’s design is my least favourite of the Holy Quintet just as a taste thing and because she doesn’t really have a cool contrasting character, i.e Madoka to Homura and Sayaka to Kyouko, but she still looks damn great, 10/10.
Hayate Yagami
Damn imagine being the lone Nanoha girl in part 2 because of how that wiki’s list was ordered. Oh well. Given that I’ve said I love black and white designs, and I love the Nanoha series’ designs in general, what do you think I’m gonna give Hayate? That’s right baby, another 10/10! Everything about this looks just sick as all fucking hell, the gold gives her a really ultimate feeling as do the 6 wings, which fits the ultra strong as all fucking hell Hayate, and then those wings are also Satan or whatever because some stuff to do with the Tome of the Night Sky, Nanoha plot stuff, don’t worry it’s cool. I also like this design in terms of finding it funny that such a big costume is on a girl as small as Hayate, it’s great. Beret is unbelievably cute too. I just love this design a lot.

Thank you SOOOO much for your ignihyde dorm tutorial...!! you saved me so much pain and agony 😭 Out of curiosity tho which of the twst dorm uniforms would you say are the hardest to draw?
Of course, fam! Anything to help a fellow artist! As far as the dorms altogether go though uhhh I guess I'll just rank them in order of easiest (in my opinion) to hardest to draw
7. Octavinelle. It's just a 3 piece suit and tie, really, nothing super unique or complex about it. The worst part of this uniform is just the hats and Azul's overcoat but tbh if you struggle with drawing suits there's so many tutorials and resources you can find to help that I think this is objectively the easiest of the seven.
6. Savanaclaw. Not super complex by any means since it's just a T-shirt, jeans, biker vest and boots, and optional assless chaps, but the patterns and beads and whatever the fuck all that is that they have hanging on their waists puts this slightly higher than the number 7 spot.
5. Ignihyde. I know a lot of people hate the Ignihyde uniform but honestly... it isn't all that bad. At least considering how complex some of the other dorms are. Ignihyde suffers in that it's super daunting at first glance but once you kinda wrap your head around how to simplify the top's pattern's it's really not that bad. Shading it is a bit of a pain, but again, could be so much worse.
4. Scarabia. Now we're getting into the unfair bullshit that is patterns. fucking. everywhere. As a personal rule of thumb the more patterns an outfit has and the more ornate they are in design the harder it gets for me to draw, and Scarabia's outfit is the perfect example of where that comes into play. It's not terrible for the most part but then you get to that belt. And that skirt around the back. Also I still struggle to figure out how the fuck the pants work with the crotch all the way to the knees and honestly... the sandals are just the worst. Putting my twstsona in Scarabia was the worst decision I've ever made but... it can still be worse.
3. Heartslabyul. Heartslabyul's uniforms have some areas where you can kinda simplify the patterns (like the checkerboard sleeve and caution tape belt) which helps a lot when you're drawing it, but it's still not easy. There's patterns on the vests and the roses suck too because flowers are naturally just hard to draw.
Though that said this dorm actually would be lower on the list if it wasn't for the fucking dorm head uniform. I never in my life want to draw Riddle in his dorm uniform because WOW is it a nightmare. Patterns everywhere, lots of loose, flowing fabric and lots of how do the pieces even work physically I cannot figure it out for the life of me.
Heartslabyul's gonna give me a Heartslab-heartattack.
2. Pomefiore. Oh how I loathe the day I'll inevitably have to draw the Pomefiore uniform.
This dorm has everything I hate most when it comes to drawing outfits: there's tons of different length layers that make up the top which all have different textures and transparencies, giant, shiny, complex patterns everywhere, on the top and on the boots, the ends of the gloves have lace which means even MORE details to work on, and as if all that isn't bad enough you have Vil's stupid fucking tiara which honestly looks like a gold-plated nightmare.
In short: FUCK the pomefiore uniform. It's beautiful, no doubt, but that beauty has a price and LORD is it a steep one. The ONLY saving grace for this uniform is you can pre-draw the decals and copy-paste them on, but it doesn't mean I don't still hate it.
1. Diasomnia. This outfit.... sucks. There's just no easy way to say it. There's not a lot of patterns that muddle up the design, thank god, but there's instead a LOT of layers that make up the top and oh my god are there so many extra details to focus on. Lots of zippers, lots of overlapping leather straps and belts and chains, the leather wings on the shoulders, the spindles of thread and wheels wrapped around the waist, and the stupid little hats that have no business being so hard for me to draw properly, and this isn't even touching on whatever the fuck that thick metal spine on the back is. Seriously, why is that there except to make my life difficult.
Malleus's cape and gloves have some weird pattern on it too that I'm in NO way interested in figuring out how it works, so yeah. I am no interested in the Diasomnia uniform whatsoever.

Do you have any advice on how to make a character look majestic/godly?
hwvdnab ah well;; im not exactly sure if you mean this literally or figuratively tbh lmao but I guess I can describe kinda how I do character design
I'm mostly self-taught so bare with me if my explanation is really bad lol, feel free to ask too if something doesn't make sense.
But pretty much when I'm designing a character, I take into account a few different things, such as their environment, time period, culture, and personality. These are probably the biggest four I pull from. Sometimes I give characters assigned colors or patterns, but usually if I do it's with a purpose, because while I love the aesthetic of color-assigned characters or a whole cast with the same color scheme (like, XTale? dream character design choices there tbh), I can never get it in a way that feels natural. But if you wanna use specific character colors to help design outfits and such, go right ahead!
"Majestic" and "godly" can be pretty relative based on what kind of culture you're working with. If it's something more Western-style, a larger character with imposing wings and a lot of white might be a better choice, while something more Eastern-style might be less extravagant in its body but more in its clothing and with a lot of gold. (Of course, this is very general, and when you really get into the detail of it, it really depends on where you're pulling inspiration from. Something German is probably gonna be really different from something Inuit, despite both living on the "Western" half of the world, and something Chinese is likely to be much different from something Russian, again despite being both on the "Eastern" half of the world. Even still there becomes more and more narrower cultures.)
"Majestic" and "godly" can also be different based on the time in which it takes place -- times like the European Middle Ages might see angels as more godly, but maybe in a more futuresc setting someone who has become more robotic or immortal through technology is seen as godly. There's probably a lot more examples, but that's really all I can think of right now tbh, haha.
It also depends a bit on how this character acts, too! If this character is a god of sorts but doesn't enjoy the role, maybe appearing as such or over-the-top doesn't appeal to them. Or, on the flip side, if the character adores being majestic, maybe they'll be adorned with as much things as they can possibly get their hands on so they can stand out and really show off how amazing they are. Or, of course, anywhere in between. Maybe they're casual or don't mind their godliness. Is there a "uniform" of sorts for this godly character, or are they even godly at all (do they just consider themself to be at a higher position above everyone else, but are in fact at the same level)?
The most broad topic is a character's environment, because that is wholly dependant on the work itself. Arguably, culture can be as well, if the culture is completely made up without outside influence, although this is rare since most people draw inspiration from something. Human brains in general are just really bad at coming up with entirely new ideas or images. (Fun fact, did you know you can never come up with an image of a face you've never seen before, even in your dreams? Any face you picture in your head is of someone you've seen before, and if it's someone you don't recognize, you probably just passed them on the street once or something. Anyway. Back to actual advice lmao.)
The environment of a work isn't necessarily the same as the setting, either. Two different works can both take place in South Africa, but one could have a happier tone while the other a more somber tone. If the tone of the story is happier or doesn't really divulge into any serious discussion, sometimes it's better to go with something more bright to fit that environment, while if something is more somber or dark, a desaturated color scheme might fit better.
Additionally, there's also what I personally love to use, and that's juxtaposition, which is a complete contrast between two close by or closely related things in a work. The number one example I can think of that is a clash between character design and environment is Doki Doki Literature Club, where all of the characters are very cute and happy looking, but the environment is dark and horrifying, which leaves the player with a very confused opinion of what is going on because of the mixed messages. Most works tend to not lean towards this because of the mixed messages it can leave or the misdirection is can have towards the consumer. But at the same time, it's an extremely powerful tool to use. I tend to have a lot of brightly colored things in darker-toned environments.
Another thing that I just thought of alongside juxtaposition is foils, which is similar to juxtaposition in a way, but rather it is directly related to two characters who are designed to be complete opposites to each other. A prime example: Sans and Papyrus! Literally everything about both of them is completely opposite, and their outfit and color choices are actually well-chosen to fit this as well. Blue and red are typically two colors that are considered "opposite" (although blue's true opposite color is orange, so when I draw UT!Pap I usually use a red-orange) and are typically used to represent "good" and "bad" as well. I could write an essay about their differences, but I'll spare you, since that wasn't the question lmao. But if you have a character who you're trying to contrast against this godly or majestic character, whether it be someone like a hero, a sibling, a demon, etc; using foils to contrast them with someone else in your cast list can be helpful too!

Hi there, now I've seen a lot of people complaining about how Yuga doesn't feel like a real yugioh protagonist. I'm here to put that to rest with the real facts.
Here's Yuga Odo
At first glance he may not seem fit for the Yu-niverse, but actually he's one of the best fit.
One of the first complaints I've seen is that his hair doesn't look anything like the other Yugibros, and I'd like to ask, what are the criteria?
One of the big criteria I've seen while looking through yugioh hair is most of them have AT LEAST two tones. So let's check:
Yep! Two tones! In fact, Yuga's hair almost looks identical to ANOTHER CHARACTER from another series:
IV from Zexal. Now I havent seen Zexal, so don't quote me on any of this. Sure IV has a cool uniform and Yuga doesn't but thats just blatant erasure of Yugi's school uniform.
Now I will admit that IV does look pretty swanky, but I can look at his hair without saying what in the god damn.
His hair has a general flow to it, kinda like it might resemble actual hair. Kinda like real hair, as close to real hair as yugioh can get.
Yuga's hair on the other hand looks like a literal dumpster fire
And I mean this in the most literal sense. It literally looks like fire. The award for blandest Yugibro hair actually goes to Judai who doesn't even fit into the Yu trope either
(Not ratting on Judai, I love him)
Another criteria though is eyelashes, all the Yugibros have great eyeliner game, and Yuga has about just as much as Judai so I'll call that a pass.
He even has the usual wing. Its the facts.
So, I'd call this case closed tbh, Yuga is more of a Yugibro than some. I have yet to see Sevens, but I am ready to see this kid in action.

Beth Liveblogs Black Widow
Bought that premium access on Disney+ so I can have the privilege of pausing for snacks and using subtitles as needed - so let’s go!
Beth’s Spoiler-Free Review: Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the movie - the plot was compelling, the characters were likable, and the stunts were really excellent. I felt like hair and makeup dropped the ball on realism multiple times which I was sad about, because how she looks seems to be pretty important to Nat so I expected it to be done well in her movie.
I did not like the way they framed the tail end (denouement - obviously because this movie is mid-series we know how it ends to an extent) - I felt like the connect-up to Infinity War was lackluster, especially compared to how enjoyable and dynamic the rest of the film was.

The movie begins with a young Nat with blue dyed hair and visible roots, showing her natural red. Do you know how hard it is to get natural red out of hair, enough to make it blue and not green? And I’m supposed to believe that a middle-school age girl in 1995 Ohio had access to these chemicals? I’ll give her the white hair in IW/Endgame because she’s an adult with a lot of experience as a spy altering her appearance. But as a child? In the 90s? While her family is apparently in hiding? Sus.
The scene with Alexei laying on the on the wing while Nat learns to fly? AMAZING stunts. Amazing. AND someone in an action movie is finally smart enough to shoot the tires.
Nice skills on young Nat, getting the gun. Since we know from Endgame that Nat’s father is named Ivan, we know that Alexei isn’t really her dad. She also refers to presumably the red room as going “back.” Was she lent out to these agents to legitimize their family?

Nat closing the door behind her is a small thing but I appreciate it - no sneaking up behind her.
When Yelena throws Nat in the kitchen and her feet hit the door and she spins before she hits the ground? That was a helluva stunt.
Oooooh honey. No body left to check is ALWAYS movie code for they lived.
Dreykov’s daughter? Another hint from Avengers 2012? C���mon, movie.
Riding the chimney down? Another incredible stunt.
Dreykov can scan his soldiers’ bodies and terminate them if they’re too damaged to keep fighting? Big yikes. With Nat where she is character development wise, the stakes are now much higher because if she injures an opponent they may be killed remotely.
“Do you want me to chase him down and un-steal it?”
The car door under the bike was an excellent stunt - as was the car going into the subway. Though I’ve never seen a subway entrance big enough to admit a car.
Who hasn’t wanted to slide down the middle to avoid the crowded escalators lol.
Yelena making fun of Nat’s sexy poses I am LIVING omg.
Running water for wounds. RUNNING WATER. NOT ALCOHOL. The vodka goes on the INSIDE for the pain - the running water cleans the OUTSIDE. If there’s a convenience store then there’s a bathroom, with running water. Cleansing with something like alcohol is a LAST RESORT and you do not look like you’re at that point resource-wise. I thought these ladies were supposed to be highly trained in all of the things?
“Could be fun though.” “I saw where he put the keys” “Top drawer green cabinet.” I love their chaos.
Yelena’s vest and its pockets and the resulting conversation are positively majestic.
“You are sensitive.” “You’re a very annoying person.”

“Such a poser.” Girl, you need to meet Loki - he does a lot of hair flips too lol.
The sibling energy between the girls during the rescue!!!
“Whooooooa... this would be a cool way to die.” Yelena, I’m not necessarily disagreeing with you but get your head in the game girl.
Poor Alexei - he never gets to do the dramatic escape from *inside* of the aircraft.
Hang on, no ovaries? So all of these women are now in immediate, surgically-induced menopause? The uterus part makes sense if the intent was to prevent them from getting pregnant if they have sex during a mission, but, what, they gotta be on estrogen supplements for the rest of their lives? That’s just really poor planning. Like it was hilarious the way Yelena went into the biology of it to make Alexei uncomfortable, but that really doesn’t make sense to do to your superhero kids. It’s just bad science.
Love that Yelena keeps her vest even after she changes into her matching white flight suit. That vest better make it to the end of the movie.

The singing between Alexei and Yelena was a really beautiful moment because it was neither auto-tuned-good nor hilariously bad - it felt really real, especially the way Yelena’s so choked up she can barely make sounds come out.
Uh-oh, mama has one of those monitor your vitals and kill your ass suits. The suits I understand - the eyeliner though... when and why did she do her makeup?? That’s not really the thing that comes to mind for me when I’m getting ready to do something athletic, like say kidnapping my supersoldier fake family.
“This is a much less cool way to die.” Also WTF why would they do that. Wouldn’t it be easier to get the information out of her while her brain is still attached to, y’know, her mouth??

Also, after the beating she took and how hard she had to wack her own face into the desk to sever her olfactory nerve and the amout of blood we saw her leave behind from doing that, her face should be a LOT more messed up, come on makeup department.
“Get as far away from here as possible.” And then keep going because General I-Collect-Supersoldiers-Like-Stamps Ross is about to turn up at your location looking for trouble and he’d snap you ladies up like there’s a fire sale and you’re going out of stock.

All of the aerial stunts were amaaaaaazing - the way Nat slowed herself by sliding down the panels so Antonia could catch up with her and she could deploy her parachute...

Fuuuuuck Ross is showing up and he sucks and I hate him and I’m super worried that he’s gonna take the vest from Nat if he takes her into custody. Please don’t let her lose the vest.
Okay, there is now zero reason for Nat to stay behind. They have an aircraft. She had plenty of time to just board it and leave?

Oh no. Oh no. That’s worse. That’s a lot worse. We are now setting up the Hawkeye series and I while I’m horrified that this was how they ended the film, I gotta say that’s going to make for some wonderful angst in that series on both Clint and Yelena’s parts and I am here for it!
OVERALL IMPRESSION
I really, really enjoyed this movie, I thought the story was compelling, the stunts were really excellent, and I liked the character dynamics and the twist
I did not like the ending - it just sort of fell off quickly and didn’t feel satisfying after an otherwise really fun movie. I also take issue with the hair and makeup as shown among the characters, as seen in my several rants to that effect.
I would have liked to have seen a few more childhood/training flashbacks, and absolutely would have loved a cameo from Jeremy Renner (not just his voice) and to see him and Nat meeting and him giving her the whole dad speech that he does so well - bonus points if she could have then quoted him to Yelena or Antonia, showing the way that multiple people had a formative effect on her (an answer to the “The Avengers aren’t really your family either” comment).

ok ok ok so the refs from today. im just talking as perap does so feel free to ignore this
- it was kind of like a test to see how i could balance out quality with quantity. my canvas size has bumped up in resolution since the post from last year and im finally coloring line art, hallelujah. (i cant believe it took me so long to start doing that my old stuff was SO washed out with just black line art)
- tbh i did most of the extras (alt outfits etc) bc i thought it would be fun. and it was! well, the line art was. the coloring... oh god, what a drag. its so boring. so much procrastination... but im glad i finally got it out and just a little over a year after the first ones.
- so ya i said galar was like 90% done and NOW its like 200% done, and with that being said
- "yOu DiDnT dO tWiLiGhT wInGs ExClUsIvE oUtFiTs OR ThE cOrViKnIgHt TaXi DrIvEr" and my response is: when does it end, susan? MAYBE i will end up doing them. but it took me two months along with all that art i posted earlier this month and im tired. im not doing them today, not tomorrow, not for a while. galar is DONE i want to move on
- so the take away from the test is. i am not doing that again. JDGFG. the alt outfits and designs (basically the entirety of part 3)... i wont be including those in ref batch posts from now on. it was a lot. when i draw extras like that, ill just do it whenever. im not making them priority like i did with the posts from today.
- tbh i MIGHT aim to get gen 7 done this year. i can try it. i ACTUALLY have a few sketches done already so theres hope.
ok so now for comments on specific things
- firstly, tumblrs image limit forces me to put multiples on the same canvas, which i finally decided to take advantage of and have a few interactions that i wouldnt have done if i could just post them all individually so i think thats neat. adds some substance i think.
- again mustard isnt urshifu bc i couldnt choose which one he wouldve been. tho ngl hyde wouldve been cute as a kubfu
- ik honey has a team but i didnt like any of them for her so its free real estate
- yes klara and avery are the ONLY ones with gloves and dynamax bands. shhh i know. i know.
- nia was also kinda free real estate bc her only known pokemon is tyrantrum and. i didnt like that. i also didnt like galarian meowth for her either. so tbh i did it to match her earrings, but also i dont have ANY pikachu girls as of yet and i wanted to fix that (i say that as i already posted a pikagirl a few weeks ago HDHDGS)
- sighs. sordward and shielbert... i NEEDED a reason to justify their stupid hair ok i DONT care about anything else. i THINK it makes them better. maybe. probably not. and also i copy and pasted them despite trying to not be lazy with my art bc i just fucking hate them i dont care.
- the macro cosmos employees were actually inspired by this made by flare-gamer-64! its the reason i didnt go with aggron for peony. and at first i thought mawile for one of my designs would turn out weird but i actually think its fine now

Behind the Bastards: This is my ABSOLUTE favorite podcast I paid 36 dollars to go to the live show and i would do it again. It’s a podcast going into detail about the worst people in history and it updates twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday. LOVE the host because I have chronic nerdy white guy brain and tbh he’s just a really good historian and researcher. In depth without being dry, although I don’t mind dry. When there’s a really good guest it slaps even harder
99% Invisible: A podcast mostly about design, architecture, and infrastructure. I got recced this by a guy I know who’s an architecture major and I fully expected to be bored out of my mind by it but I was pleasantly surprised. Lots of interesting stuff in there about the history behind certain designs that we take for granted today, in-depth research and analysis about stuff big in the art/design world i.e. Vantablack, the pattern on military uniforms. Interesting but like, a bit niche.
Worst Year Ever: I used to visit Cracked.com obsessively before it got bought out and honestly most of their columnists are still like, the funniest people on the internet. This is a political podcast by Cody Johnston, the guy who does Some More News on Youtube, his co-host Katy Stoll, and Robert Evans, the guy who hosts Behind the Bastards. They have excellent chemistry, they all play off each other really well, and they cover a lot of things that aren’t mainstream. Their episodes on Midwest Furfest and Milo Yiannopoulos are especially excellent and treat furries with way more respect than any mainstream coverage did. I stopped listening to Chapo Trap House regularly a while back and this is a more-than-adequate (and funnier) substitute
QAnon Anonymous: Anyone who knows me at all knows that I spend 16 hours online and, as such have been perpetually brain poisoned by weird insular shit. Anyways QAnon Anonymous is one of the niche-r podcasts I listen to because it’s literally about 1 thing and that’s the weird obscure right-wing conspiracy called QAnon. It’s a great podcast, the hosts are funny as hell and exactly my brand of Online Brain Poisoned, and it’s surprisingly insightful into the mindset of a lot of these weird, niche right-wing conspiracy theories. Also their theme song just kinda goes off
Revolutions: A history podcast about revolutions and revolts throughout history. This one is, and I say this with all the love in my body, dry as hell. If you like an information dump occasionally interspersed with a dry little joke, this one’s for you. If you do get into it, though, it’s incredibly informative and well-researched. I’m normally really wary of stuff like this that delves into things like leftist insurrections and revolutions because a lot of mainstream information about stuff like that is straight-up American propaganda and suchlike but Revolutions does a fantastic job of not falling into that trap

I know it’s first volume and the budget isn’t as big as it is now, but Ruby’s arms in her uniform are unusually long.
Blake is actually somewhat OOC during the ‘Banzai’ then again, Blake is one of Miles’s hardest characters to write and it’s Volume 1 so…
