watched a majora's mask analysis earlier today with my fiancee. my verdict is that I actually really enjoyed the op's interpretations, but that I wished that they talked more about mm's literal level and what one can get from it, rather than talking about those events as if they are strictly metaphor. yes, of course the metaphorical layer of the game is rich to dig into, but it's also such an open-ended and surreal game that it's difficult to nail down every single distinct metaphor that can be derived from its events. which is why I consider it necessary to discuss the way the literal layer presents itself and what sort of motifs and ideas exist there as a baseline before you begin looking at it as metaphor

#narrates #zelda #^ longwinded way of saying that i think that both the impeding inevitability of death #the way the characters react to it #and the question of whether or not termina is even 'real' or can be saved are all intensely interesting aspects of the game #regardless of metaphor. you are existing in a world where you empirically cannot change anything permanently until your very last cycle #and in a world that is potentially not real or is doomed in other ways. but your task is still to help these people and save it #which is interesting even before you get into the symbolic spiritual and metaphorical reads of the game #again thats not to say those reads are bad. i think those reads are what people find the MOST meaningful about mm #most of mm's strength lies in its atmosphere and its ability to convey all these overlapping ideas #its surrealism and the richness of its ideas is what allows for an audience to draw all sorts of meanings out of it #it's just also very meaningful in its LITERAL events and I enjoy that quite a lot!#also... I feel like you heavily have to acknowledge death of the author when dealing with mm #you cannot rely on what you think the author intended. because thats both unclear and does a disservice to the games open endedness #which means that your analysis tends to be far more meaningful when you discuss how IDEAS are embedded in the game #and how you personally constructed meaning out of that #rather than relying on your ability to convince me that your specific read was completely what the devs were thinking #idc about the devs tell me about YOU!#this video was way better than most at doing that but I just prefer mm analysis that is heavier on death of the author #edit: i don't mean you should discount cultural context. thats part of the ideas embedded in ths game #i just mean that I don't like arguments that rely on the idea that the devs INTENDED that cultural context to shape the games metaphors

i’ve stopped expecting interesting animation from bones. the star and stripe fight is cool but like every other fight/moment in mha, it’s only cool bc the source material itself is cool; bones does nothing to elevate the manga

they rarely try to experiment with colour and style. i saw so many colourings of the moment star and stripe made a giant version of herself out of the air; people made her look like a cosmos, like it reflected and bent the sky around her, doing so many inventive things and for the anime to just make her an outline against that godforsaken sky? i’m disappointed

but people will take me saying i’m disappointed and spin it to me saying the fight was bad. it wasn’t, just like most fights and moments in the anime aren’t bad but that’s all bc horikoshi knows how to draw. they never do anything beyond that; they never try and adapt it. whether it’s bc of time, direction, budget, or what have you, they will never do something truly inventive with their colouring

i’ve said this before and i’ll say it again, it’s not just that the sky is blue; it’s what the blue sky represents and that is an unwillingness to broaden their colour palette or atmosphere to support the changes in the tone of the story. the story isn’t just “will midoriya get into his dream high school and achieve his dream job?” it’s child abuse and societal systems and their dysfunctions, it’s racism and morality and is it right to try and save someone who’s determined to destroy the world just bc they are also a victim?

look at the finale of atla, a show that mirrors the narrative tone of mha; it starts out bright and colourful and vibrant to match the happy and small stakes nature of the story and as the tone of the story changes, the environment changes to reflect that. the siege of the north pole? everything goes blood red when the moon spirit is threatened, then goes completely desaturated when it is killed with only fire bending having any colour. the day of black sun? uses a solar eclipse to change the lighting. the entire sozin’s comet fight? has red skies and lighting to show the threat

bones abject refusal to change anything about the art itself is a detriment to horikoshi’s complex narrative

#its not just about the colour of the sky #lets get that straight #we’re doing some real the curtains arent just blue shit here so keep up #colour and lighting are a very deliberate choice in any visual medium #and choosing to ignore it and not take advantage of it will just be a detriment to whatever youre creating #i see so many colourings of manga panels where they do insane things and really do next level colourings #and to then see the anime that has so much money and talent behind it just for it to be flat and emotionless with no atmosphere?#it sucks #when you can pick out a scene from something called the WAR ARC and it looks the same as the sports festival arc? come on #and i know theres more to making a scene out of a panel then there is to colouring one #but when these indie creators doing visually gorgeous colourings its hard not to feel like the anime is lacking #and when your colours are flat and your camera angles are uninteresting then what is the point of an anime adaptation #even if they do change things here and there like the endeavour v hood fight or all might v afo #it doesnt change that the majority of the time its the exact same #and when the storm eventually comes round? that wont satisfy me either enless they change the colors of everything as well to be desaturate #and fully embrace the new atmosphere that horikoshi has very deliberately drawn #class a v deku is the one time they did a sustained colour difference and theres a reason that went over so well #coming out of my cage and ive been doing just fine.txt #go beyond plus ultra #mha #bnha #my hero academia #boku no hero academia #star and stripe #shigaraki tomura #izuku midoriya #bakugou katsuki

Little do they know, he’s actually survived thanks to a certain Junior Deputy who, tired of using violence to try to solve everyone’s problems, impulsively took the unconscious Baptist to the bunker in which she has taken up residence. She’s only been stuck in this situation for less than two days, but it’s already becoming more complicated by the minute, and Taylor still has no idea how to get out of it.

(I know it looks like they’re already very close since she’s wearing his shirt, but they’re not. Not yet.)

completely unsurprising that Sam Lake loves Twin Peaks: The Return and how it involved Cooper

#when watching play throughs of alan wake 2 it was the season of tv that kept coming to mind #and the entire atmosphere - the way it changes style and plays around with mediums - Mr. C/Dougie/Cooper and Scratch/alan/zane #the list could go on forever #I have more complicated feelings on twin peaks the return tbh #I REALLY enjoy parts of it and I’ve seen the entire thing twice #but had a lot of criticisms too. still annoyed that Tammy was this investigator for the official book #then in the show one of her only scenes is an ass shot with David Lynch and Agent Rosenfield checking her out #i love the inspirations Alan wake 2 took from it but I also love how remedy made its own rich story #(and imo did certain things better)#alan wake 2 #sam lake #twin peaks #this info is from his recent interview with Games Now! on twitch btw

-and then she asks for the trust back and omg its! hard! for gray! but he does it and she looks so...happy for that second before they fall, -and then he ASKS HER TO COME BACK IN THE QUIETESTSOFTEST VOICE FOR SUCH A VIOLENT SCENARIO I CRY.

like what the push and pull and together is how they can survive to the next step of their story

carmen admitting that the reason he tracked her down at all was because it was him and she wanted to see him. its such a show off way to do it [oh you think you can bait me PSYCH I'M 3 STEPS AHEAD] but the real emotion that she wanted to see him one last time literally !!!! shines thru still imo. and basically makes me go...omg you let him track you cause its him as the story keeps going

the way that the maybe date has matching faces frames of them looking at the other from across the street

i think that the fight at the jail scene is underrated angst because once again the framing is that gray is disappearing from her sight and SHE CAN'T STAND IT. THE FADE FROM THE CLEANERS! THE ROBOT GRABBED HIM AND TOOK HIM AWAY! HE SHOUTED HER NAME!

i honestly love how in opera actually that gray can't help slipping out that he doesn't have a good memory and she follows up on that and he answers sincerely, like their conversations have this earnest tinge to them even at their weirdest points. grays openess is met with her compassion and her sadness gives way to their light jokes and his reaching out

and carmen obviously doesn't like that he's forgotten his year with her

and then in kiwi where they flirt "you're late, fashionably i hope" and it leads into a sincere apology that she couldn't be there

him recognizing she needs help in kiwi and going for it

the forest scene where she decides the safest place to be if she's worried about his sticky fingered ways is with either hands next to his sides

every single time that carmen interrupts at the himalayas [kiwi memory/ the psychological test/the window breaking]

GRAY PUTTING DOWN THE CRACKLE ROD. [she's in ur head boy let the light win let-]

Gray explaining that he knows carmen is good and true and needs their help and no strings attached they can lock him up if needs be just. PLEASE.

SO BASICALLY

1] don't let go scenes never miss and not just because of the repetition [please come back is haunting me tho especially because gray went from separating her into a league of her own into someone who needs to BE BACK and he's gonna be the one to help do it .]

1.5 the hug is my header for a reason omg she looks so ! happy going to hold him.

2] carmen admitting gray on the train is there because she wants him there (and basically anytime its from carmens pov that yes gray actually does have enough real estate in her heart to deserve this) it has the added bonus of a gray so grumpy he "lost "

3] gray's himalaya episode chipping him down to his truest regret is so visually pleasing to me and the way it ends with the current carmen breaking the window...yes...

[tied with explaining to ACME why carmen deserves mercy and they can deny it to him if that helps]

4] the forest pic. you know.

5] gonna placeholder the opera convo in particular here but

the earnest streak that is in their conversations that happens all the time even when something is a bit off. even tense as enemies they talk about the past and have investment in it, the casual opera date set up is light but also sad at what was lost while hoping for new, the flirtation of kiwi has a real apology in there, carmens open worries are met with him fighting his prickly nature to be there on that mission, carmen answering his questions/concern as dark!carmen with smiles, like...they're always so fond of each other and it breaks thru all the time and creates a softness in the atmosphere because someone ...bends

6] the framing of the date spot and that it never gets dropped really. gray looks at her and she looks at him in the frames. looking forward to each other even when not directly at each other...nice

7] lol yeah i'm gonna add anytime player tries to go :/ but he - I KNOW PLAYER I WAS THERE

8] i just. needed to know she was alright.... i wanna cry.

1] the petty spagetti nature of them throwing their codenames in each others faces omg

2]gray not letting carmen get away with rose colored vile endorsed dreams so she has to confront that...she just cares for an imperfect person. thats all. thats true. [and the way he does it is pretty blunt but ends with him offering her his own truth back i wanna-

don't care that the cgi was bad in wild blue yonder because my prevailing thought was like if they are willing to do weirdo freak shit with it im happy. also they cooked up a gayboy doctor so im blissed out

#doctor who #doctor who spoilers #actual review is: thought the premise and character moments were what id been yearning for so much it was excellent BUT #they really lost me near the climax because all this atmospheric tension was resolved by telling telling telling explaining which didn't #feel satisfying or revelatory at all. and although i did say i don't care about the bad cgi i do mean the body horror elements i loved them #i laughed about them with my sister all part of a good dw experience we were crying at dt running on all fours like a dog #but i wasn't a fan at all of the main ship not because the design was bad i loved the changing environment but #it was soooo distracting to me that donna and the doctor just did not look like they were physically there #to the point that the really ridiculous body horror was more believable to me than the environment they were in #overall though this is what i wanted there were times i was so delighted and surprised by the show in a way i havent been for 15 years <3 #feeling sososo positive and excited for ncuti #sorry i turn into a dw blog on saturday nights now

i'm not saying "i saw this coming" in an "i told you so" way but more than i happened to remake my account earlier this year so i ended up getting the "new user" experience and it seems pretty clear they were using new users as guinea pigs for their non-chronological following dashboard. and it sucks. you have to switch your dashboard over to "following" every time you refresh and there's no way to change the default to following. they said they were working on adding a way to change your default dashboard but i was always pretty damn skeptical of that given they went to the effort to making things DIFFERENT for newer accounts like, that does not show good intentions that shows going after people who don't know that they could have a better experience. and now they're trying to push it onto older users too, which was clearly always the plan. maybe i should've made more of a fuss but... honestly.... I am not a blogging warrior i am a sleepy insect. i just want to use tumblr to talk to friends and look at cool art and the weird dashboard stuff on my new account definitely gets in the way of that. basically the main feature that still makes tumblr worthwhile is our desktop blogs and the ability to sort and search posts using tags through someone's archive. but they're probably going to want to take that away too.

#Unfortunately i find cohost kind of obnoxious it feels like people press this idea of like ''responsibility to make a site better than twitt #er'' like culturally but i never used twitter much and it just feels weird and kind of oppressive atmosphere that everyone needs to post #''in good faith'' and i just think maybe i get different things out of websites than the crowd over there bc i really don't get it.#i don't really feel like i join websites to be part of a collective culture im just there for my interests and friends and i have like mayb #three friends on there so i just feel like i'm standing in the corner and sort of gave up on posting because i wasn't seeing much of what i #was interested in happening there. thinkin about how last time I was at Wake Tech the GSA was brand spankin new and one of the. presidents? or just a highly involved member? was very confused when I told him I'm agender, saying "You can't just not have a gender!"

hell, same-sex marriage wasn't even legal in most of the US back then.

and nowadays 2/3 of my teachers are trans, one of whom is nonbinary, and there's definitely several other trans people in my classes

#I mean I did have 1 or 2 trans classmates back then too but I think we were mostly pretty quiet about it? it's been Ages I don't remember #but there weren't like. 5+ people with 'blue hair and pronouns' in a chatroom talking about changing their names in the college system #then again this IS the gamedev program so maybe my sample's a bit biased lmao #anyway point is I feel like the atmosphere is a lot more lgbt friendly #or maybe that's just because I've had a decade to sort shit out as opposed to being terrified and fresh out of Harding lmaoooooo
