Did Ivan and Fedyor ever have, like, one of those big first fights where there is this uncertainty of "are we over now?" ? I mean, they would be alright in the end, but between Fedyor's overthinking and Ivan probably not having a lot of experience with relationships, there would be room for them worrying for a time after it.
Sequel to this and prequel to this. Set, as usual, in Phantom!Verse.
Moscow, 2013
June 30, 2013, is not a good day. In fact, it might be the worst of all the days of Fedyor Kaminsky’s life to date, and it is made absolutely no better by the fact that he’s long known it was coming – he just hoped, however vainly, that it wouldn’t. Three weeks ago, on June eleventh, the Duma unanimously passed the law formally entitled “For the Purpose of Protecting Children from Information Advocating For a Denial of Traditional Family Values,” with only one abstention and no dissenting votes, and President Putin is going to ceremoniously sign it into law today. It’s more pithily known as the “anti-gay law,” and it basically prohibits anything related to acknowledging that homosexuals exist in Russia. Fedyor has been anxiously following its progress with his activist friends in their group chats, all of them praying for some last-minute miracle to swoop in and knock it off course. Now that’s not going to happen. He has no idea what is going to happen, but to say the least, it won’t be good. He’s taken some body blows before, but this one sucks.
Fedyor vacillates wildly between wanting to watch the signing ceremony just to scream obscenities at it, and wanting to hide under the covers with the pillows over his head and cry. He texts frenetically with his friend Lyosha, who lost his position at Perm State University a few months ago for daring to do research about LGBTQ people, and is already planning to head into exile abroad. Does he have to do that too? Fedyor has lived in Russia his entire life, even if he has traveled internationally and has lots of foreign friends. He could stay. He could try to fight this thing somehow. He could do more. He should do more.
But how?
When Ivan gets home from work at six o’clock that night, that’s where he finds Fedyor: sitting on the living room floor under a quilt and neurotically eating chocolate biscuits, texting and crying. He drops his backpack and rushes over. “Fedya? Fedya! What’s wrong?”
“He signed it,” Fedyor says flatly. No more elaboration is necessary. “So now we’re fucked.”
Ivan looks troubled. He rocks back on his heels next to Fedyor and searches for the words. Then he says, clearly trying to be helpful, “Maybe not. Nobody has to know about us. If we just keep on like before, go about our daily lives, it will be all right. We are not important people. Why would they bother with us?”
“What?” Fedyor wipes his eyes with the back of his hand and lurches upright, shedding the quilt and a shower of cookie crumbs. “What are you talking about? Just – deny ourselves and go back in the closet and pretend we’re not here, that those assholes won? Go out, but make sure I never hold your hand walking down the street or dare to pretend that we are together? I don’t want to be afraid every second we’re out in public, Vanya! I don’t want to be wondering if maybe they’ll look at my emails or cook up some other reason to come after us! Lyosha already got fired before this even officially passed, and – ”
“Lyosha was a radical beforehand,” Ivan says dismissively. “It wasn’t because of this, I’m sure. So what? He’ll get a fancy position somewhere else. The West will love to take in the gay Russian, persecuted by the barbaric Putin regime, to show off how humane and enlightened they think they are. He will be fine.”
Fedyor looks at him as if he has two heads. “That’s how you’re reacting to this?”
“What am I supposed to do about it?” Ivan shrugs. “We have to make the best. What else are we going to do? Leave Russia?”
“Maybe we have to. What other choice do we have?”
“Stay?” Now it’s Ivan’s turn to sound like he’s talking nonsense. “Russia is our home!”
“Look, Vanya. I know you and I think differently about things, and we’ve gotten used to that. But I can’t – I physically cannot – stay in a place where I am criminalized for existing, for loving you, for being afraid that something will happen to us. We have to go.”
“No.” Ivan’s voice is colder than Fedyor has ever heard it. He sounds like a stranger. “No, we don’t. That’s crazy talk. Where would we go? America?”
“At least America doesn’t have this law!”
“America has no law that is helpful for us!” Ivan shouts. “And I’m not going there. The end! You make that choice, Fedya. Exile, or me?”
There’s a horrible silence in the wake of that pronouncement, as they stare at each other and Ivan instantly looks like he wants to bite it back, but it’s too late. Fedyor turns on his heel and marches away in frozen silence, refusing to utter a single word to Ivan for the rest of the night, even as Ivan tries to apologize and coax him into speaking again. Finally, taking the hint, he takes his things and silently goes to sleep on the couch, and Fedyor lies in their bed, staring at the ceiling and tossing and turning. Ivan didn’t mean that, right? Or maybe he did? Flee Russia, start a new life somewhere across the sea, but leave his boyfriend behind? Until recently, he thought Ivan Sakharov was the love of his life. Maybe he isn’t. Or even more terrifyingly, he is, and Fedyor will have to give him up anyway.
The rest of the week is just as bad. Ivan leaves early for work and keeps to himself when he gets home, while Fedyor starts Googling the U.S. asylum-claim process and reaching out to North American-based friends who can help with logistics. He spends hours on the computer, takes reams of notes, and doesn’t feel any better. Is he planning this for them or for him? He needs to answer that question like, now, and yet the prospect fills him with sickening dread. He cries himself to sleep with the bedroom door shut, and hears awkward shuffling in the corridor outside, like Ivan is listening and desperately wants to come in, but doesn’t think Fedyor wants him there. That’s even worse.
Finally, on Saturday night, Fedyor decides that they can’t go on like this. He drags himself out of his cave of blankets and cooks a nice supper, while Ivan goes for his usual afternoon workout at the gym, and when he comes back, he blinks. “Fedya? What’s this about?”
“We need…” Fedyor’s throat is a desert. “We need to talk about us.”
Those six little words are usually the kiss of death in any relationship, and he has no idea what’s about to happen next, but Ivan’s face wrenches in half like a torn piece of paper. He opens his mouth, shuts it, shakes his head furiously, and comes to a sudden and unassailable decision. With that, still in his gym clothes, he drops his bag and goes to one knee on the creaky wooden floor of their kitchen, in this humble sixth-floor Moscow flat that is the first place Fedyor ever knew pure and perfect happiness. “Okay,” he says. “How is this for a start. Fedyor Mikhailovich Kaminsky, will you marry me?”
Fedyor stares at him, utterly blankly, seized with the horrible fear that Ivan is making fun of him. “Have you – are you – are you serious?”
“Yes.” Ivan reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small box. “I wanted to do this in a different way, but maybe this is better. Fedya, I don’t – I can’t – I don’t want to live without you. I’ll even move to America if you want to. I’m no good without you. I can’t. Please.”
Fedyor continues to stare at him. Then finally he moves closer, as Ivan holds out the ring with a look of utter, silent entreaty, his heart wrung out and raw in his eyes. “Are you – ” Fedyor’s voice is a whisper. “Are you sure?”
“Yes,” Ivan says again, strong and steady. “More than I have ever been about anything.”
Fedyor starts to answer, and simply can’t. He starts to shake from head to toe, and Ivan scoots forward, still on his knees, and wraps both arms around Fedyor’s waist, burying his face in Fedyor’s stomach. Fedyor clutches hold of him and sinks down, the two of them barely making a sound. Finally, he whispers, “You hate America.”
“I don’t,” Ivan says. “Not really. But either way, I love you, Fedya. And I’m choosing that.”
Fedyor grips Ivan’s face in his hands and kisses him thoroughly, then remembers that he still technically hasn’t accepted his proposal, and he should do that. He holds out his right hand so Ivan can slip on the plain band, with the promise to buy him a nicer one once they get to wherever they’re going. He’ll help with arrangements, he promises. Whatever Fedyor needs him to do.
They board an Aeroflot flight, Moscow Sheremetyevo–New York JFK, on the evening of August 3, 2013, with all their worldly belongings either in the cargo hold or waiting to be shipped over by Fedyor’s parents. They hold hands in the terminal, unobtrusively, and when they get on the plane. And even as the jet engines roar into takeoff and the lights of his homeland fall away into the clouds for what might be the last time in who knows how long, Fedyor Kaminsky can’t help but feeling, once again, ready to start anew.

Sparks of Life Opera Edition
Tumblr media
I am still not over Singing a New Tune so I am going to recap for you the experience of writing that fic because there were many interesting moments over the course of those three days. Lemme start from the beginning.
- So I’m writing a fic that mostly focuses on sexual stuff but it is also mainly happening in an opera so my first order of business is to figure out what that opera is. Both the building itself and the show they’ll be watching. Because that is of utmost importance.
- I have already mentioned that SoL is located in New York so I looked up New York operas. I do not vibe with research most of the time but I vibe even less with having to come up with names for any kind of thing so research was definitely the choice here.
- I somehow get results about operas that are in the other end of the USA. That was not great. I get to the Metropolitan Opera House at last (which I might have known existed if I cared about opera in any way, shape or form) which is great! I am so close to starting the fic! Just need to figure out what opera they’re watching. Because I need that for reasons.
- I end up downloading a PDF with the seatings inside the Met Opera so that I can figure out where the hell they will be seating. But I leave that for later. I look through the actual plays that they’re having while absolutely failing with the navigation of their site. I find a show that catches my eye. It’s called The Magic Flute. I have zero idea what it’s about so I read the Wikipedia summary just to be aware. It mentions that a character has a moment when he’s singing about his search for a wife and I think “Perfect! Foreshadowing!” (since this is set pretty early on in Griffin and Valtor’s relationship).
- I decide to look up the opera and see if I can find a part of it on youtube to figure out how it will sound. I am pretty sold on it already because of the summary I read and also because it implies there is magic as a subject in it which would call back to canon. Still, I look it up. I find a full version of it on the internet with English subtitles... It is 2 hours and 35 minutes:
youtube
- “Wow, okay... that’s a bit much. But hey, it has got subtitles in English. Maybe I’d actually watch that... once I’m done with the fic. I’m just gonna listen to a little bit while I finish my research, though, so I can have an idea of what it sounds like.”
- Now it’s time to open the engagement fic - Enough to Be Yours - because I don’t remember what year they got engaged in and I need that to reverse engineer the year in which this fic is taking place so that I can make sure that The Magic Flute was being performed back then. I don’t have an year stated in the engagement fic, though. I have a date - 9th October which is Friday and that means the year is 2015. Great! So I need to figure out if they were performing The Magic Flute back in 2010. Great.
- That takes a shit ton of time and nerves as it turns out. I spent over 4 hours just researching the logistics for this fic and a lot of that was unnecessary but I’m getting ahead of myself.
- I cannot find out whether they were performing the Magic Flute in 2010. I get results of it being broadcast in English (for the first time, I believe) in 2012 but that is way too late for this fic to be happening. Also, they are speaking of a broadcast which just doesn’t work for me. So I am having a hard time over here.
- I find a list of the new titles in 2011 but nothing mentions The Magic Flute as far as I can see.
- I am now considering switching to another opera. I see an opera that is based on events from The Song of the Nibelungs (I cannot be assed to go back and check what the actual title was). That catches my eye because I have read a book that was titled The Ring of the Nibelungs, I believe, and I kinda remember stuff from it... which is what makes me hesitate because that was a big tragedy.
- Meanwhile, I have stumbled upon a trailer for The Magic Flute:
youtube
MY GOD IS THAT BEAUTIFUL! THOSE PROPS ARE FUCKING GORGEOUS! WHAT THE HELL DO YOU MEAN THAT YOU GET TO GO AND SEE THAT LIVE? THAT IS NUTS! (Also, when I mentioned paper birds (I think they are) in the fic, I meant the ones shown in 0:13, not the big one in the beginning but HOLY SHIT, DID YOU SEE THAT THING????? HOW IS THAT REAL?!?!?!?! IT IS SO FUCKING AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I CAN’T. I AM DYING. THIS IS JUST TOO BEAUTIFUL.)
- I somehow happen upon an old archive of the opera (idk how I did that but I bookmarked it in case I’ll need it again) that has information about plays going back as far as the year 1900. This is nuts! I am in too deep but I can’t pull myself away. I’ve gotten this far, I will see it through.
- I search for keyword “flute” and I get results. Some of them are pretty old but I finally find what I need. Performances of the Magic Flute in 2010! Bingo!
-  ...Oh, wait, they’re all around Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Hmm... when will it be okay for them to go? I mean, Valtor has been established to have zero free time around that time of the year and I can’t see them going on the 24th or the 31st... Oh, those are matinees. Definitely no! I need them to go in the evening. And some of these are broadcasts which doesn’t work for me either.
- I looked up earlier years as well. I considered another opera again. I decided to switch up the timeline a little. It makes sense if it’s in 2009. I think they had spring performances of The Magic Flute then. Or was it 2008? Anyway, I finally settle on an early April date in 2009 (I think). Now that that’s settled, let’s go back to the seats.
- First I need to figure out what floor (let’s say) of the opera they’re on. I was thinking of the last one first (family circle) but the boxes (I figure those seats will be safest for their activities) look like this:
Tumblr media
which isn’t vibing with me because they would be in the front row and it seems more visible. So I relocate to the previous floor (balcony) that looks like this:
Tumblr media
That works a little better although there’s the danger of having more people in their box. But they’re sitting in box 14, seats 5 (Griffin) and 6 (Valtor) (where the arrow is pointing) and there’s only one man in seat 4 in front of them. So that is the best I can do.
- Wow, all that’s finally figured out. I decide to do all the rest of the research up front in order to be able to just write after that and not stop for another 4 hours. More on those other things later BUT I get to the part where I need to pick a vibrator and... well, I done fucked up.
- First thing that comes up for a remote controlled vibrator is Lush, of course. And I am immediately sold because it has a sound activated setting which Valtor will definitely love to utilize while in the opera.
BUT
Lush 2 (which is the first one to have the sound activated setting, I believe) came out in 2018. Even if we accept that Lush also has it, that came out in 2015. My fic is set in 2009. Searching for 2009 vibrators literally went no where so in the end I decided that the SoL verse is actually set in a parallel universe where time is a little warped so the Lush 2 is out in 2009. Plus, that way there isn’t going to be a pandemic in future installments. Overall, that works. Except that I needn’t have been so thorough with my opera research beforehand. Oh, well. It’s finally time to start writing.
- How do you write? How do you start a fic? One word in front of the other? Oh, okay, never mind. Lipstick is a girl’s best friend. Let’s start from there. And a kiss that leads to the discussion of lipstick... Damn, I forgot to spend one more hour on researching what kind of lipstick Griffin would have worn. Shame! You don’t get that detail now. I believe I didn’t even mention a shade.
- Oh, wait. Need for his breath to taste like something. Hmm, let’s see. Tonic water? Yeah, that sounds about right. Never mind that he should have probably drunk it right before getting out of the car to kiss her if it was still lingering on his breath. I mean, that’s not impossible. Just improbable.
- He’s also wearing cologne, right? Gotta research that too. How else would I get this:
Tumblr media
and zero idea what it actually smells like despite the description. Also, did not check if that was a thing in 2009 but the story now exists in a vacuum so who cares.
- Apparently, Griffin doesn’t own any golden bracelets even though she does have a golden necklace? Or she could have a golden bracelet, just not one she likes for the current situation? Anyway, I wanted to mention Ediltrude as well because the twins always go together and that was the best I came up with. (That said, I didn’t need to put the mentions of them one sentence apart.)
- My god, I used a semicolon! That feels illegal. I sure hope I used that bitch correctly.
- Okay, I absolutely love all the banter and just flow in the car. Idk how I did that since it’s such a constricted space but I am really proud of it. However, the logistics were sometimes hard to logic my way through. I mean, Valtor doesn’t get to look at her a lot and I had to employ a red traffic light to give him the chance to do so.
- I hit a wall about three paragraphs later. Things started going in a weird direction. I was considering even deleting the last two lines but then I managed to get back on track thanks to having figured out how they met and I decided to write a little bit about that without spoiling it (that will be a fic of its own some day). Suffice it to say it was a meet-very-ugly. But it bailed me out. Also, they got over it so it’s all good.
- And now... that paragraph. You know which one I’m talking about. It stands out with the locations I’ve given. That paragraph required 30 minutes of looking at Google Earth to figure it out and I still nearly got it wrong. At that point it occurred to me that they’ll need a place to park. I mean, idk how parking is in NYC but it’s probably not the way it is in Bulgaria especially on small neighborhood streets where it’s just... park wherever (even in front of a garage if you’re brazen enough and don’t fear having your tires slashed). So first, I was going to have them coming down Tenth Avenue and passing by the backside of the Opera which is not ideal for me because I needed Griffin to figure out they’re going to the opera so that they can have the following dialogue. But there is the New York Public Library of the Performing Arts right next door so I figure Griffin will recognize the area if it’s next to a library. And I have them almost at the garage but... that’s not looking right. This garage is on 65th Street and mine is on 62nd... I have been looking at the wrong garage for the past hour. Now that I have caught that mistake, things get easier. They just drive right past the facade of the opera, take a right turn and then enter the garage. Easy peasy. For whoever’s actually paying attention to the map.
- They’re in the garage now and I have to write another kiss. Shoot! I do not vibe with writing kisses. Writing sex scenes is much easier. But I’ll try my best because this is a little bit necessary if we’re dealing with an insertion of a vibrator in a public bathroom one minute from now. (Again, logistics!) I actually went back to add in a little discomfort during the kiss (but not too much because they’re consumed with each other anyway and probably missed something) just to make it more realistic. They can’t be comfortable in the car. Also, you have got to love how I never even thought of what make the car is. But I did stop to research the tinting of the car windows.
- Now this is extremely funny but I would have had zero idea that there are different laws about how tinted your car windows can be in the USA if I hadn’t read a very extensive critique of Fifty Shades (whichever part it was that had that info). So I look up the VLT for New York and it says 70%. Great! Then it won’t be that visible through the windows what they’re doing inside. Oh, wait! VLT means Visible Light Transmission aka 70% of the light should be passing through the window. Aka it is only tinted on 30%. This much:
Tumblr media
That’s practically nothing. You can see everything through it. Welp, then someone’s gonna see, I guess.
- Can’t believe I didn’t stop to look up clutches either. (Lmao, I was calling it a purse instead of a clutch at first even though I definitely meant a clutch. And then I remembered that clutch existed as a word. Who would’ve thought?) It’s baffling trying to figure out why my brain was prioritizing some details over others and I just genuinely have no idea what was going on.
- Griffin is blushing a lot in this. Can you tell I have no idea how else to convey Valtor giving her feelings through body language?
- I first envisioned the box being opened by the hair pin by turning it like a key. Only later did I realize that that wouldn’t be possible because the pin has two parts (whatever they’re called) and that would make turning it impossible unless all of the base fits into one hole in the lid of the box. So I had to adapt my vision to using the extensions at the ends of the hair pin like a hook that pulls the lid up once it’s clicked free. I have zero idea how that would be done but I’m sure it can be done. So yeah, anyway, the pin looks like this but with attachments at the ends to open the box:
Tumblr media
- I might have gone a little overboard with Griffin’s reaction to having the vibrator inside her. I might have made her a bit too embarrassed but I still think that she simply wouldn’t appreciate someone knowing about what she considers a private experience (despite the very public setting).
- And I am being overly specific again with the seats but I worked for that information so you’re getting it against your will!
- Speaking of, that man in their box was pretty ignored throughout the fic. But then again Griffin wasn’t overflowing with lucidity. She is sure to have missed... A Lot, actually.
- My apologies (once again) to @her-majesty-wears-jeans for not letting Griffin punch Valtor in the face for the terrible pun he was about to make but I thought that that would ruin the mood so I had to skip it.
- I might have imagined things a little differently but then consent factored in and I had to change things up so that Griffin is clearly on board with everything. I hope it came through that way at least. She is on board even if she is very, very frustrated. She would never throw the bet just because it’s difficult for her. Though, I’m taking note for future fics of maybe being a little bit more explicit about the enjoyment of all parties involved. I just couldn’t really think of a way to convey it better back then and I am coming up with several ideas now and I will try to keep them in mind for future fics.
- I keep going back and forth on just how far into their relationship this is. Sometimes it feels like it’s not enough time for them to get this familiar with each other and sometimes it feels like too much for them to still be skirting their feelings for each other like that. Will update when I make up my mind about how long exactly it has been.
- In retrospect, probably should have picked up an opera that people would be less likely to bring their children to (as brought to my attention by @her-majesty-wears-jeans). I apologize for this. Did not consider it at all.
- A wild tangent about Griffin’s sexual experiences before Valtor popped up (for the second time now). This is giving me thoughts and I am not even sure if I’ll manage to get them all out in the bachelorette party fic. Oh, no, I am getting ideas again.
- God, I had to mention those paper birds because I adore them. Also, needed to do a time skip somehow (sure hope they don’t show up at the very end or the very beginning).
- So there are some things about the whole thing with the suit jacket that if you squint, you’ll miss the very far-fetched and convoluted ways in which I could make them make sense but again, it isn’t impossible to make them operate according to logic so good enough.
- And now for the dress:
Tumblr media
I thought it would be reasonable for Griffin to own something like that. It doesn’t look overly expensive or dramatic.
- I swear that most of the 2% angst was an accident. Griffin was supposed to say the “You paid how much for tickets exactly just so you could fool around?” line but the following few paragraphs sprang on me out of nowhere. That was where I left it off the first day I was working on it and I wasn’t sure how to continue it. Then the angst happened.
- I do not believe the retaliation part was planned but would it really be a Griffin x Valtor story if something like that hadn’t happened? XD
- “reverberated”, “multitudinous” and “unobtainable” are probably not words that Griffin’s muddled mind would go to in that precise moment but everything else I came up with for them just did not sound right.
- I completely forgot the word for neckline and was so mad at myself for that but, luckily, I managed to remember it before posting the fic. I believe the original read “he slipped a finger under the fabric of her dress, running it over the top of her breast” which is not incorrect but just not precise enough for my liking.
- Sure hope the shortened version of the opera did not cut out the ending musical sequence. But that seems unlikely.
- The idea was running overly long in my head by having them going back to the penthouse so that I could have the scene where he picked her up so I decided to move things around and have him carry her bridal style on their way from the opera to the car. It’s not like she didn’t earn it.
- Pretty sure I had planned something a little different for the last several lines of dialogue but I couldn’t remember what so we get this. Which isn’t a disadvantage. I mean, Griffin is already thinking of marrying him. XD (That’s probably a bit of a stretch at the current status of their relationship but then again, she was thinking of a wedding, not necessarily of their wedding even though I’m clearly a little romance gargoyle that meant exactly that.)
- Originally, Valtor was supposed to floor the brakes while they were out in the NYC traffic but then I decided that doing it while still in the garage with only one car behind them and both vehicles driving at a very slow speed was a lot safer so I switched to that. It also saved me writing more words which was appreciated. I thought this fic would be a bit shorter.
- I was at a loss for how many orgasms Griffin should want from him but then the commitment line happened and that was all avoided.

How A Demon Commissions An Angel ~ A Daminette FanFic ~ Chapter 9: An Opening For Options
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Sent you an email for Jason’s jacket. Had an idea I think you might like.
Mr. Postscript: I see popular culture references strike again.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Is that a problem?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Cause I’m not even sure “Hit me with your best shot” would be considered a pop culture reference. I mean isn’t that song from like the 80’s?
Mr. Postscript: 1979 but I think it has less to do with when the source material was released and more with how often the reference is used in modern times, which in this case would be much too frequently.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Did google help you come to that conclusion?
Mr. Postscript: …
Mr. Postscript: All online research must begin with the use of a search engine.
Mr. Postscript: At least I don’t use Wikipedia as a resource.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Everyone uses Wikipedia.
Mr. Postscript: Clearly not everyone.
Mr. Postscript: …
Mr. Postscript: Do you?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Of course! I even donate to them every now and then!
Mr. Postscript: I see.
Mr. Postscript: I’m beginning to reconsider our friendship.
Mr. Postscript: I just don’t know if I can forgive this egregious offense.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Really, Mr. Drama Queen? My friends and their interrogations won’t scare you off but my support of the largest archive of free information will?
Mr. Postscript: Your friends were perfectly in their rights to see if I was worthy of your friendship.
Mr. Postscript: I believe I passed the test.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: You were great Damian! Honestly, thank you for putting up with them. Maybe you’re not as bad with people as you think.
Mr. Postscript: Yes, well it does help if they are more than three thousand miles away.
Mr. Postscript: There’s also the fact that I’ve admired Ms. Tsurgi’s fencing style for a while now which may have something to do with it. I’ve been following her career for years.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: …
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Damian, how do you know who she is? We never told you her last name.
Mr. Postscript: Right…
Mr. Postscript: It may have come up in my initial search for your identity.
Mr. Postscript: I don’t imagine there are many girls your age named Kagami who know how to fence, live in Paris, and have close ties to your class.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Okay, that explains that.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: I mean it’s still pretty creepy mind you but I went into this friendship knowing how it started.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: I guess it’s just weird to think that you know so much about me and I still know so little about you, not even your last name.
Mr. Postscript: You know more about me than anyone besides my family, angel. I wouldn’t want you knowing my last name to make you think differently.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Because you’re famous?
Mr. Postscript: In a way, yes.
Mr. Postscript: You could probably find out who I was if you wanted, you have enough information to work with but I wish you wouldn’t.
Mr. Postscript: I don’t think you’d like what you’d find.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Trust me, I know better than anyone that people sometimes only see what they want to. A little bad publicity won’t make me think differently of you.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Besides, I already told your brother, Damian. You get to decide what you tell me and when.
Mr. Postscript: I should’ve given you the same choice. If I’d known the kind of person you were beforehand, I would’ve.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: That’s the thing, you can’t know who people are before you get to know them.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: You have to give people a chance, Dami.
Mr. Postscript: What if they end up being like Ms. Rossi?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: If we constantly think the worst of people, we’ll end up like Lila, calculating and manipulative.
Mr. Postscript: I suppose I see why you might think that.
Mr. Postscript: You know…
Mr. Postscript: If my family ever finds out how we met, I’d hate to have to deal with their disappointment. I think Todd already wants to adopt you.
Mr. Postscript: Be on alert for another phone theft.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Well, they may never know. After all, they’ll get these amazing gifts for Christmas that will obviously show a lot of thought and consideration.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: They’ll never suspect we had a rocky start.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: But back to the subject of amazing gifts, do you like the wording? Is it not his style?
Mr. Postscript: Oh, Todd will love having that across his back.
Mr. Postscript: I just have a question about the “o” in shot. It’s supposed to be a target right?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Yes! Well sorta?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: I want to make it look like a poker chip with a target on it.
Mr. Postscript: Oh. I can see that. Why a poker chip? I don’t recall it coming up in our earlier discussion.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: I mean it did in a way.
Mr. Postscript: Oh? How so?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: The poker chip would be stitched on the back of his right shoulder meaning he’d have a chip on his shoulder.
Mr. Postscript: …
Mr. Postscript: I approve the design. The double meaning in your designs will be incredibly entertaining for me every time I see my brothers wearing them.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Well, like I said. Subtle details are my specialty. But I don’t recall any double meaning in Grayson’s design.
Mr. Postscript: Right.
Mr. Postscript: I stand corrected. I simply meant there are a lot of subtle details.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Okay! That reminds me! I’ve started Grayson’s sweater.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Just sent a progress update to your email.
Mr. Postscript: It’s looking exactly like your drawing. I approve the choice of yarn; the colors are appropriately vibrant.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Great!
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: So what were you thinking for Drake’s sweater?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: I think I remember you mentioned a drawstring hood.
Mr. Postscript: I did, yes. However, I’ve been rethinking that idea.
Mr. Postscript: I can picture my family accusing me of trying to suffocate Drake.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: …
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Well, we wouldn’t want that!
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: You know maybe the “hit me with your best shot” thing wasn’t the best idea either.
Mr. Postscript: It’s not that concerning with Todd. I’m sure he’ll just love that across his back. Drake and I have a more complicated history.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Didn’t you say your inside jokes with Jason were your attempts on each other’s lives?
Mr. Postscript: Yes but it’s Jason. He antagonizes everyone.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Got it. But Drake’s different?
Mr. Postscript: Yes. Everyone loves Drake. Well, except for Todd but we’ve established that Todd hates everyone.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: So why are things complicated between you too?
Mr. Postscript: Correction: Two
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: …
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: You know what? Okay. I stand corrected. Question still applies.
Mr. Postscript: I may have treated him poorly when I first joined the family. He was the most recent addition to my father’s collection of orphan children and I may have tried to claim his place in the family by forcibly removing him from it.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: I see. So you felt threatened by his presence and handled it poorly?
Mr. Postscript: I would say that is a drastic yet not wholly inaccurate interpretation.
Mr. Postscript: However, I’ve since realized that my initial concerns were unnecessary. Drake is a threat to no one but himself.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: But your family still holds it against you? They still think you might actually hurt him?
Mr. Postscript: Well, I was a bit extreme and while I no longer harbor the same intentions, no one could accuse us of being particularly warm.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: I see.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Have you tried apologizing?
Mr. Postscript: You mean sincerely and not because father ordered me to?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Yes.
Mr. Postscript: Then no.
Mr. Postscript: However, before you begin what would surely be a fruitless campaign to get me to change that…
Mr. Postscript: Might I remind you my family isn’t big on addressing our feelings? I believe Todd’s tried to hurt Drake before too and I highly doubt he ever issued an apology yet they seem to be on good terms again.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Right.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Well, as your resident people skills instructor, I think I’m supposed to give you some kind of advice like two wrongs not making a right but frankly I’ve begun to realize that is utter bullshit, pardon my english. So I can understand why an apology would not be on the table.
Mr. Postscript: I’ve never understood that saying and I’m glad that I will not have to hear it from you.
Mr. Postscript: Do not mistake me, I understand the sentiment in a way however, I’ve always felt it to be too general and way too easy to use in a non-applicable, negative context.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Good to know where on the same page there.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Damian, I don’t mean to pry but can I ask you a question?
Mr. Postscript: You may ask and I may answer.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Do you feel like your family holds you to a higher standard?
Mr. Postscript: …
Mr. Postscript: I don’t know if I’d call it a higher standard.
Mr. Postscript: …
Mr. Postscript: I simply have more to catch up on. I started with less knowledge of some basic things than the rest of my brothers. However, I wouldn’t say I’m treated differently in any case. You should see Todd and father argue sometime.
Mr. Postscript: I just hate feeling behind. I’m used to being the best, the favorite like I was when I lived with my mother. So failing like I have recently has been frustrating, especially with what’s now on the line.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: You mean the threat of moving?
Mr. Postscript: I wouldn’t call it a threat. I actually feel like I should mention that the place he wants to send me to is actually somewhere all my brothers have attended so it’s not like I’d be the first to go there in any case.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Oh, so it’s like a family tradition?
Mr. Postscript: I suppose you could say that.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: So would going really be that bad?
Mr. Postscript: Honestly?
Mr. Postscript: In theory, it wouldn’t be the end of the world or anything. In actuality? I can’t imagine it would be pleasant.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Okay. If there’s one thing that makes you not want to go, what would it be?
Mr. Postscript: Is it not self-explanatory? Why would I want to start over again and lose all I’ve earned since coming here? I spent ten years of my life without my family, is it a crime to not want to waste any more?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Okay, I would say that does sound rather awful to put it lightly but would it really be like that? I mean it’s not like you’re going off to war or anything, right? You’d still talk regularly and video chat and stuff?
Mr. Postscript: I’m sure we would, angel, but they’d still be here, all together and I’d be miles away, with only people I’d have no clue how to interact with for company.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Right.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Are you worried about feeling like an outsider again?
Mr. Postscript: No.
Mr. Postscript: Not quite…
Mr. Postscript: I’m more worried about feeling like a failure. Nothing is more shameful than being a disappointment. Especially when I have three brothers who aren’t even related to contend with that seem to be doing him proud.
Mr. Postscript: Except for Todd but he’s turned disappointing father into its own type of game and at which he’s winning.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Aren’t your brothers older than you? And haven’t they been with your dad longer? Surely it doesn’t make sense to compare yourself to them?
Mr. Postscript: Please!
Mr. Postscript: When Drake was my age, father was already training him to take over the family business.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Damian, in any case it’s not a competition, right? You’re not competing with them for your father’s regard.
Mr. Postscript: Maybe that’s so. I still feel like I’m losing and I hate that.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Yeah, I imagine you would.
Mr. Postscript: How helpful.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: I mean, you’re always allowed to feel how you do.
Mr. Postscript: Thank you for the permission. I do so appreciate it.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Okay, Mr. Sarcasm, do you really want to know what I think?
Mr. Postscript: …
Mr. Postscript: Go on.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Okay, you might not want to hear this and of course this is just my opinion but it seems to me like you have really high expectations to meet, maybe they’re other people’s or maybe their your own. Whether or not you actually have to contend with your brother’s achievements, you obviously feel like you do and I can see how that would be hard to turn off. So maybe some distance from the situation would be a good thing?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: I know that having to meet new people especially when socializing isn’t your strong suit sounds daunting but I kinda feel like you’re selling yourself short. Sure, you’ve had trouble in the past but you’ve made progress right? Moving to a new place doesn’t erase any of that. I get that the first time you had to start over was hard but now you’re older and wiser and have family to support you and a wonderful friend/moral compass to help you (aka me). Plus, I don’t know, it just feels like you’re really focused on doing what you think people expect of you and not what you really want for yourself. I don’t know, maybe some time away from expectations and legacies might give you some perspective.
Mr. Postscript: …
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: …
Mr. Postscript: Withdrawing now, giving up and moving on, wouldn’t that be like quitting? Is quitting not another form of losing?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: If you’re looking at it like that, I’d ask yourself this: Is winning worth it if you hate the game you’re playing?
Mr. Postscript: …
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: …
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: So, totally overstepped there, didn’t I? Sorry!
Mr. Postscript: No need to apologize.
Mr. Postscript: I’m just not sure how I feel right now.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: That’s okay! I’m not trying to force you to make any big decisions right now or anything. If you just want some time to think, that’s cool. Whatever you end up doing, you deserve to have a choice in it so let’s come up with something for Drake’s sweater so your dad doesn’t force your hand okay?
Mr. Postscript: Okay.
Mr. Postscript: Marinette?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Yes?
Mr. Postscript: Thank you.
Mr. Postscript: Everything you’ve done and said so far has shown a level of care for me I’ve done nothing to deserve and I know you’re always just trying to help me and I'm very grateful. I just want you to know I will do my best to be as good a friend to you too.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: I know, Damian. You may have your faults (we all do) but loyalty is not one of them.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: For whatever it’s worth, I think your family also wants what’s best for you like I do. It just has to be up to you to decide what that is.
Mr. Postscript: Right.
Mr. Postscript: Well for starters, I think it would be best for me to avoid being accused of attempting to suffocate Drake.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Yeah, I agree.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: So would you want just a regular sweater for him then? Or I could make a drawstring hood that doesn’t close completely? I could make it so there’s always a gap left to breathe through.
Mr. Postscript: I like that last idea best.
Mr. Postscript: My original vision was that Drake could easily shut out the world and fall asleep in it so we don’t have to deal with his insomniac coffee zombie antics all the time.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: I want my business card to have “insomniac coffee zombie” on it.
Mr. Postscript: I highly doubt you’d get a lot of business that way. It’s a poor marketing strategy. It comes off as unprofessional.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Please, my clients are normally the reason I pull all nighters. I would give it credit for illustrating my dedication to my craft.
Mr. Postscript: Don’t get me started on Drake’s work ethic.
Mr. Postscript: The thought that you and Drake might actually have a lot in common is quite unsettling.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Really, anything else we share besides a coffee addiction and ambition?
Mr. Postscript: Well, you both are child prodigies in a way. For all our differences, I can’t deny Drake has done much for father’s company at a young age and you have created a whole brand for yourself at only sixteen.
Mr. Postscript: I’d never thought about the logistics of balancing schoolwork and commissions. Is it difficult?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: I mean, yes and no. There have been times when I stretched myself too thin and paid the price in sleepless nights. But that’s the perks on being your own boss I guess. I just learned to pace the commissions and be selective with my clientele. It’s worked pretty good so far.
Mr. Postscript: That’s a relief to hear. However I hope my order didn’t come in a bad time. Did you already have a lot on your plate?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Nah, I usually keep the holiday season light so I have time to make Christmas gifts. Although, I suppose that’s not as much of a concern this year.
Mr. Postscript: Oh?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Quite a few classmates have been crossed from the Christmas list this year.
Mr. Postscript: I see.
Mr. Postscript: I don’t know whether I feel happy or upset for you.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Ha! Me neither.
Mr. Postscript: I suppose it is both then. I am happy that you are standing up for yourself but upset that they have forced you to.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Thanks Damian. I can’t help but feel a bit like I’m being petty.
Mr. Postscript: Petty is a word people use when they hold you to a higher standard than themselves.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Now I want to put that on a t-shirt!
Mr. Postscript: Hm. I would order one.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Really? You’d match shirts with me?
Mr. Postscript: Well, no. I wouldn’t wear it around you per se, I don’t think I’d pull it off as well. However, I’d happily parade it in front of my brothers.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: You know what I’ll take it.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Shelving that design for now, let’s get back to Drake’s sweater. So I got a general sense of his taste from the pictures you sent me although I already see I’ll have to take some liberties when it comes to fabric because these pieces don’t look like they were made particularly for comfort and that’s a priority here right?
Mr. Postscript: Yes. I trust your judgement when it comes to fabric.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Great! All that’s left is the design and for once I actually have an idea right off the back.
Mr. Postscript: Is that so? Consider me impressed.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Well, it all hinges on Drake being as big of a coffee lover as you make him out to be.
Mr. Postscript: Trust me angel, coffee addict is literally Drake’s personality. I don’t know how that’s possible but he managed it.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Okay. It’s time then.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: I’ve had this idea in the back of my mind for a while now and I’ve never taken the time to fully develop it but if I pull it off it may well be the greatest piece I ever produce.
Mr. Postscript: And of course, it goes to Drake. He’ll never let that go.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: I’d hope not. He should feel honored to be the recipient. T.G.Y.T.T.B.: However, I’ll need two things from you to make this work.
Mr. Postscript: Well?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: I’ll need you to take a picture of your brother’s coffee, after he’s poured and added whatever he adds (although if he’s truly a coffee addict that won’t be much).
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: It is CRUCIAL that you make sure to show me the exact shade he drinks, understand?
Mr. Postscript: Now you’re even starting to sound like him when he’s in a coffee-crazed state.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Do. You. Understand?
Mr. Postscript: Yes. I can do that. What else?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Right, I’m gonna need you to trust me on this, okay? The design is going to be so much more than meets the eye so I’m not going to show you any drawing or photos before you get it in the mail, okay? T.G.Y.T.T.B.: I know that’s kind of a lot to ask but I think you’ll understand why in the end.
Mr. Postscript: …
Mr. Postscript: I’m not going to pretend any of this isn’t ridiculously strange but since you obviously know what you’re doing and Drake actually loves a good mystery, I’ll allow it. Use your idea.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Yay! You won’t regret it!
Mr. Postscript: So is that all you need?
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Yup, Grayson’s sweater is already started, I’ll go shopping for the materials for Jason’s jacket tomorrow, and Drake’s can be started as soon as I get that picture of the coffee.
Mr. Postscript: That won’t take long. I should have it to you by tomorrow at the latest.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Great!
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: Um, Damian. I really have to go. There’s an akuma.
Mr. Postscript: Yes. I got an alert. I signed up for them when you mentioned the situation. Is it close? T.G.Y.T.T.B.: it will be ill text you tomorrow okay?
Mr. Postscript: Yes. Be safe.
T.G.Y.T.T.B.: thx bye1

Hello Tumblr! It’s been a while, sorry for that. Life has been a rollercoaster these last few weeks and unfortunately not the kind that only goes up my friends. On to better news however, this chapter being posted means Tumblr is finally caught up to where the story is at on AO3. Even better, chapter ten is mostly finished. Everything is written and now I just have to go over and edit it one last time. I do plan on posting it today which feels so weird to say because writing this chapter was so different than my usual experience. It totally breaks my usual chapter structure and I feel like I wrote it at a snail’s pace. Here’s hoping it will have been worth the wait! I’ll see you again soon but as always AO3 will be updated first! <3

I’m Always Curious Part Three
Previous Part | Next Part |  Masterlist Notes: Not beta-read. Also I’m unsure of who Pike’s comms officer is on the Enterprise when it comes to Disco so I?? Made someone up. Lemme know if there’s someone established, tho! Summary: We’d received a search and rescue order from Admiral Cornwell nearly three hours beforehand - a research vessel, the U.S.S. Anil, had ceased all communication with the Federation shortly after it had dropped out of warp for manual repairs - dangerously close to Tholia Prime.
Tumblr media
“Remind me why this was a good idea,” Pike grunted into his communicator. “Twelve minutes out, sir,” Number One’s voice crackled crisply in response. "Was that an answer?” Pike asked me, glancing warily in my direction. I might’ve smiled if I could focus on anything but how unbearably hot it was. Our Tholian ‘hosts’ had kindly lowered the temperature of our half of the negotiating room from its customary 404 degrees Fahrenheit to a ‘hospitable’ 102 degrees Fahrenheit (apparently this was so low that they needed to take frequent breaks during our negotiations, leaving us to bake in the room; this seemed excessive, as they had taken the pains to shield themselves behind exothermic screens to ensure their own temperatures wouldn’t drop too drastically). We’d received a search and rescue order from Admiral Cornwell nearly three hours beforehand - a research vessel, the U.S.S. Anil, had ceased all communication with the Federation shortly after it had dropped out of warp for manual repairs - dangerously close to Tholia Prime. We were still in Federation space, but the Tholians had a reputation of being less than kind to anyone that they deemed a little too close to home, and they had never been friends of the Federation. The Anil had been found, badly damaged and entirely uninhabited. Our engineers were doing what they could now to patch up the vessel now, but that was only one half of the search and rescue. Pike’s initial attempts to engage with the Tholian vessel in the area had been fruitless; their language consisted of clicks and high-pitched squeaks, and Pike’s usual bridge communications officer, Lieutenant Commander Thaleh, was on leave, and her replacement wasn’t familiar with Tholian. Spock dropped my name, and I’d been able to decode their message - they wouldn’t speak to us on a ship-to-ship basis. I could reply to them in kind in the form of clicking and whistling. Pike and I agreed to beam aboard their ship under the guise of an information swap while Spock and Nhan beamed aboard separately, in secret, and located the crew members of the Anil. “That was an Una answer,” I said, reaching up and tugging at my collar. We’d been given water, but I knew that if I reached for it now, I’d drain it. “I won’t tell Number One that you used her name,” Pike gave me a conspirator’s smile, and I returned it. “Chalk it up to heat exhaustion, Captain,” I returned.
Pike and I straightened as the door opened, the image of the Tholians reemerging behind their screens. They loomed tall, their glowing rhombus-shaped eyes peering at us through the heated screens. Their sound system crackled to life, and a series of clicks and screeches streamed through. It took me a moment, and I turned to the Captain, swallowing thickly, throat dry. “They would like to inform us that intruders have been identified on board, and would like to know if we know anything about this.” Pike’s brow twitched; our eyes remained on one another’s, careful in our silence to not make any sudden movements, to look at the Tholians where they were closely watching us. From Pike’s communicator, Number One reported, “Nhan and Spock have made contact with the Anil crew. Working to beam them aboard, but they’re jamming our signal, sir.” “Tell them that we are unaware of such involvement,” Pike said. I nodded before I turned my head, repeating the message to the Tholian side. There was a pause from them before another series of clicks and screeches. “They say that they’ve identified our vessel working to repair the U.S.S. Anil and say that we either send orders to stop work immediately, or they will show the same treatment to our crew.” Pike’s expression hardened, then, eyes darting to their screen. “Number One, status report,” He ordered through clenched teeth. “Still working to un-jam the transporter signal, Captain.” My eyes darted to the screens where I could see the Tholians shifting impatiently. “Number One, the Anil crew, when they were captured, they were mid-repair, correct?” I asked. “Affirmative.” “Suited for space?” “Presumably.” “And likely remained so despite capture?” “You have a plan?” Pike asked. I shot him a wary look. “I have a bad idea.” “Well, that’s something,” He pressed. An irritable hiss came from the Tholian side and I held a finger up to signal a moment more before turning my head back to Pike. “Spock and Nhan and suited for combat, helmets included, right? The Anil crew are suited for atmosphere. We tell the Tholians that we’ll give word to stop work on  the Anil, beam back to the ship, give Nhan and Spock orders to find their way to an airlock with the Anil crew and into space. If our transporter beam is still blocked, they use their guidance to get back to the Anil, we use our tractor beam to get a lock on the ship and warp out before the clicky bastards over there can do anything about it.” Pike’s lips twitched at my words, asking, “You hear that Number One?” “Heard and patched through to Spock and Commander Nhan as soon as the lieutenant mentioned a bad idea, Captain,” Number One answered crisply. “It’s our best play right now, I say we go for it,” Pike nodded, turning back to the screens. I mirrored him, relaying to the Tholians that we would gladly stop work on the Anil, and that we would need to return to the ship to give the order. The Tholians seemed to purr out our compliance. "Try beaming the others back first,” I mumbled into my comm. The transporter was delayed, and then we were on the transporter pads, in a blessedly cool room. I sighed, letting my shoulders sag, relaxed for a second. I hadn’t realized how much I’d adjusted to that heat until I was out of it. I followed Pike out of the transporter room, into the turbolift, holding onto the handle as we went to the bridge. By the time we arrived, Number One was barking orders, issuing course corrections. I watched as the Anil crew, Spock, and Nhan wove out of the path of Tholian fire, even as the Enterprise darted and rocked out of the path of our own fire. “Anil crew is aboard the ship, sir, Nhan and Spock are with them,” Number One announced. “Tractor beam status?” Pike asked. “Locked, sir.” “Get us the hell out of here,” Pike ordered, lowering himself into his chair. I watched as the Tholian ship began to fade, then disappeared entirely. I felt Number One giving me a look, and I met her eye. “You should get cleaned up,” She said. I couldn’t even bring myself to be embarrassed; I was too tired. I gave her a nod. “Lieutenant.” I stopped at the doors of the turbolift, turning toward the sound of the Captain’s voice. “It wasn’t a bad idea,” He said. I smiled a little bit. “I’ve had better ones, sir,” I said before I stepped onto the turbolift, doors sliding shut behind me. -- “With respect, you should get some rest, sir,” I said lightly. Pike hadn’t even paused for breath when we’d gotten back aboard the ship. I’d heeded Una’s advice and gotten cleaned up returning to my post. We were on our way to Starbase 389 for the Anil’s repairs; the Anil’s crew was safely aboard the Enterprise for the journey. I’d been surprised by the invitation to the Captain’s ready room - Number One had extended it to me, and when I’d arrived at the end of my shift, I’d found Spock, Nhan, Number One, and the Captain there with drinks in hand. I’d assumed it was a debriefing, but it had been more of a decompression session. It had dwindled gradually until it was just myself and the Captain. “Interesting advice from the crew member that almost immediately returned to their post on mission completion,” Pike commented, leaning back in his seat. “I think the key word there would be ‘almost’. At least one of us stopped for water.” Pike’s laugh took me by surprise, and it made me smile. It was a sweet sound - lower than I’d expected, but light. I wanted to hear it again. I lowered my eyes to my desk, careful not to let my eyes linger on his smile, like I’d let myself before. It was easier when the others had been in the room; when his attention was drawn away, I could observe him to heart’s content. Narrowed to the two of us, though, my sneaky glances would be more easily caught out. “You saved our hides out there today,” Pike had sat up in my introspection, leaned forward a little. My eyes flitted to his; that more serious look had overtaken his face again, but there something gentle there, too. “Just did my job, sir,” I excused, shaking my head a little. “It’s not like today was your usual,” Pike pointed out. I smiled. “This is Starfleet. There really isn’t a day to day usual,” I countered, “I mean... I will concede that I don’t typically orchestrate escape missions, but...” I shrugged a shoulder, “Frankly I figured if it was the worst idea offered, I was fine with it being the bottom of the barrel. If you’d taken someone else on that ship you probably would’ve made it out just as fast, if not twice as. I just wanted us out of there in one piece.” Pike was frowning now, not in a disappointed way, but almost with a confusion. I didn’t know what I’d said t hat might’ve prompted that, but I cleared my throat, hoping to jolt him of it. “I should leave you to it, sir. And I’m on shift in a few hours, I should uh...Hydrate between now and then,” I set my half-full glass on his desk and stood. Pike looked like he was about to say something else, but he stopped himself, instead pressing his lips together and giving me a tight ‘Captain’ smile. “Of course. Have a good rest, lieutenant.” “And you, Captain.” I made for the doors before I could say anything else stupid - or possibly confusing. “Lieutenant.” I cringed as I stopped, turning to face the Captain again. He rose out of his seat, walking around his desk to stop in front of me; he was hardly more than a few inches away, and he spoke lowly, as if there was someone nearby that he didn’t want overhearing us. “Any idea that ends in the most peaceful resolution of a situation, with the fewest lives lost, with the ship in one peace and the Federation standards upheld is a good idea. We may’ve left with Tholian fire at our backs, but when we engage with the Tholians, that is almost always going to be a guarantee. You offered a viable solution in a tricky situation and performed more than admirably under pressure.” Pike held my eye as he spoke to me; he wasn’t speaking down to me, or scolding me or lecturing me; it felt like he was almost pleading with me, to see the situation another way. “How another officer may have acted in the situation is immaterial. What I know is how you did act. I was glad to have you by my side.” I averted my eyes from Pike’s, to the badge on his chest. “I appreciate that, Captain,” I said quietly. “...Get some rest, lieutenant,” Pike murmured. “Sir,” I mumbled before I turned on my heel, hurrying out of the ready room as fast as the automatic doors would allow.

Crash Course | Chapter 03: Ready?
Fandoms: Danny Phantom, Batman,
Relationships: Danny Fenton & Jazz Fenton,
Characters: Danny Fenton, Jazz Fenton,
Words: 2′246
Tags: BAMF Danny, BAMF Jazz, Sibling bonding, Shenanigans, Swearing
Summary: He swore his sister was trying to make him go into cardiac arrest - considering his halfa status that was quite the accomplishment-
But there was no other explanation to his sister’s stubbornness, and if he knew her at all there was just no talking her down from interning at goddam Arkham.
A/N: I appreciate the comments, guys. :33  Let me know what u think.
CHAPTERS: 1, 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7
Danny might not be the smartest person out there but he sure was crafty as fuck.
He had needed to be even before the ghost entered the picture. Then, after the portal was up and running the habit of thinking on his feet and the fine art of rolling with the punches had been added to his skill set.
So, Danny knew from experience that no matter how good you could get at improvisation, it was always better to prepare beforehand if you had the opportunity. Because if you let something to chance, it would probably come back later to fuck you over. Or some annoying ghost would get in the way out of goddamn nowhere. He could deal with them, but it was just a waste of everyone’s time. Better get going before someone interrupted him.
Normally one small thing or another would backfire anyway because of his salted luck, but he preferred not to poke sleeping dragons when he could.
Taking into account all of that, he had decided the first order of business in the Fenton Crash Curse for Suicide Missions: Start packing all the shit they would need to take with them.
Because It’s never too early to pack for the road to hell.
Especially if you are already in a hell all of your own.
-.-.-.-
“What do you mean you are coming with me?” Jazz murmured from the threshold of Danny’s room, eyes wide open, as she watched her little brother try to pack all types of random things into suitcases.
Since she had announced at the Fenton Family Dinner her plans of going to Gotham University and accepting an internship at Arkham, Danny had been behaving like he was possessed, which considering the portal in their basement was not that far fetched; he had started carrying around a book-like-journal and would not stop murmuring about survival-of-the-fittest. Jazz was not going to lie, she appreciated the concern but that part was a little bit concerning. Not the survival in general, they had been playing that game since forever in this house, but they had never really needed to write anything down.
Until now, apparently.
It was kind of weird witnessing all this. Weird as in she wasn’t used to him fusing so much over her. A normal amount, yes. But most of the time it was the other way around, she was the big sister after all. Also,  with the ghosts around and him going all hero on their behinds her brother was in dire need of all the support she could dispatch. So, yes, she wasn’t expecting this reaction at all, and she was even less prepared for her brother declaring his intentions of joining her in Gotham.
She hadn’t asked how he was planning on dealing with the ghost problem yet, but considering he was already packing when she, they now, weren’t leaving until the end of the summer Jazz thought her brother must have had something in mind already.
She didn’t even know how they could need some of the things he was putting in there but it appeared like Danny was on a roll and she wasn’t going to be the one stopping such, umh, productivity.
“I said what I said”
Jazz frowned lightly.
“Are mom and dad aware-?”
“I told them I was going to be your assistant with the research; mostly the field part because I don’t think they trust me with the equipment after what happened the last time,” Danny answered while still hunting down for more essential items to put in bags, those things were handy as fuck. “also, get a job or something”
“A job?” jazz raised an eyebrow and leaned against the doorframe.
“It’s on the list,” Danny waved his journal/diary/thing in the air. Huh, so they were survival tips. “considering you are the only one with a scholarship and I´m not going to school anyway it seemed appropriate.”
“excuse me? you are not going to what?”
“May as well-” Seeing his sister’s expression he quickly backtracked, “but I mean, if you are really that opposed there is always online classes”
Danny tried to smile in her sister’s direction, but his nervousness made it come out more like a grimace. He kept trying. Jazz kept staring at him. Danny kept grimacing back.
Then she smiled back. A proper, full toothed smile. Oh fuuck
“I think I can do you one better” And with that, she turned on her heel and left.
Danny blinked two times. one after the other.
“D-Do me one bet-? Jazz, wait!”
But it was already too late, his sister had another ball to start rolling.
-.-.-.-
Her brother was not stupid.
If her brother choice to appease her by taking online classes had been born merely of a strategic need, and hence the best course of action to take, Jazz wouldn’t have rebuked at all, there were, after all, some pretty good online options that her brother could take. But alas, that was not the real motive of his decision.
It pained her and enraged her to see people belittle her little brother without even knowing him. See them think they had any right to decide whether he was worth something.
And it nagged at her than even knowing the basics of what was wrong with her brother’s low grades, she couldn’t help him more than she currently did. Not really. Unless she wanted him to end up in the hands of the G.I.W.
Fat chance of that.
But if there was a thing a Fenton was not it was a settler. And like hell she was going to let these people bring her brother down.
The first order of business would be to scout out the G.S.U. properly, some phone calls could prove useful, after all those who search shall find.
-.-.-.-
When Jazz had retreated to her quarters earlier Dany had been left on his own with an uneasy feeling nagging at his gut. It felt a bit like foreboding.
Like most things in life that inconvenienced him when it came to family issues he decided to ignore it until it came back to bite him, so he continued with his preparations and eventually took a seat among all the clutter that had become his room. After that, he didn’t have to wait long.
His sister had come back strolling decisively into the room, only pausing briefly to warily give the evil eye to the sheer number of things spread all over the room that appeared to have multiplied since she left the place.
She stopped right in front of her brother’s seated form and trusted her phone into the smallest Fenton’s unsuspecting hands.
“Look! There is still time to apply to a full-ride scholarship at Gotham Academy” Danny blinked up at her without a word, and at his sister’s insistence looked down at the phone to start reading, then he did a double-take and started re-reading.
Jazz had got to be kidding him.
“You want me to apply to some posh elite school?” He looked up incredulously at the redhead “Elite, Jazz? Me? With my grades and the amount of time I would get to study for an entrance exam I would be failing this just by applying.” grumbled the boy.
“That’s the best part.” Said the girl smiling like the Cheshire cat. “This particular exam is practical in engineering”
Danny froze. His eyes shot back to the phone.
“Practical you say?”
“Yes, lately there have been more scholarships granted for demonstrating a great gasp in the practical portions. Gotham is a little, umh, hard to handle, I suppose, and there have been situations in which people with the knowledge to accomplish great things have been turned down because of a lack of proper school background or support. So they decided to start implementing this.” She explained while her little brother continued scanning the document up and down.
Eventually, Danny shook himself back together.
“Ok, look, let’s say I had a shot at this.”
“Which you do-”
“Which I might.” The younger interrupted her, “This still requires to prepare at least three proposals for the faculty’s designated table of judges to evaluate and grade to get the green card, and this is like two weeks -two weeks!- from now, it doesn’t even specify what they are gonna have the applicants doing for the final test. How the fuck am I-?!”
The redhead decided to cut in before he could drive himself into a frenzy.
“Well if you are that sure about joining me then you won’t have a problem acing this, will you?” she smirked, then it softened into something more fond. “I know you can do this Danny, and so do you. And if you are that worried about the time, I can help you, we can start tag teaming together for ways to deal with the ghost from the get-go. It may not be permanent, but it will have to do.”
Her brother started biting his own lower lip and still looked somewhat unsure, so she decided to use the final big gun.
“Did I mention that Gotham Academy is right across the road from Arkham?”
Danny’s shoulder slumped.
“Ughh, fine!”
Jazz beamed down at him.
“I will leave you to it then!”
-.-.-.-
“Also, those things are not going to fit anywhere if you don’t organize them”
“Oh, ye of little faith.”
-.-.-.-
So. Jazz did have a good reason to believe her brother could get the G.A. scholarship.
The Fenton thermos technology was not only useful for capturing ghosts but could also store other things. That’s to say, more tangible things.
And her brother was the one who made it happen.
Danny has been tinkering with his parent’s things a lot more than some people would be comfortable with. The truth is, some of the things Jack and Maddie have invented could be fucking useful for everyday life if you took out most of the ghost shit or rearranged them a bit, it could have gained them a pretty penny, but like we all know the Fentons are not interested in anything if it’s not ectoplasmic.
Danny, on the other hand?
As much as he ends up believing all the bullshit others say about his sister being the only genius child of the family, he had never been afraid of dismantling and mounting up again some of his parents’ equipment. For him, it was not a question of whether or not he was qualified to do so, after growing up watching his parents tinker random machines all over the house he had inevitably started to pick up their ways almost as if via osmosis.
His parents, of course, had never fully noticed the fluffy-sweater clad toddler waddling after them from time to time watching them work, at first this happened when Jazz was otherwise occupied in extracurricular activities and couldn’t keep the boy successfully distracted somewhere else.
If at the time, Jazz had realized what was going on, she may have panicked and stopped her sweetly feral summer child of a brother from getting anywhere near their parents in the middle of a craze. As it was, she had not noticed in those first years, and by the time it had come to her attention even she had to concede that if her little brother had managed his recon missions without no one the wiser - Her brother was sneaky like that -, then he deserved the benefit of the doubt.
And, had that not been enough to convince the big sister, that had been the moment the sudden realization than her brother, unlike her, was more of a hands-on learner hit her full force, which would have been enough to make her relent. Learning was always good in her books.
Later, Danny would find most of the classes being imparted in Casper high boring as fuck. Not necessarily for the subject, but the way they were imparted. The youngest Fenton needed a good explanation along with a hands-on approach applied to something he found interesting to fully commit to something. At school, the most he could get were the theory and the occasional practical classes.
If the classes had been related to something interesting, say, rockets, stars, maybe NASA, it would have been easy to pay his full, unconditional attention to the teachers. But not one of the teachers had bothered to try and link the lessons to the interest of the alumni, not surprising, considering public school stuck to basics and had a timeline to complete and the classroom never seemed to learn things at the same rhythm so concessions had to be met.
It was still boring as fuck. But if he wanted to someday make it into NASA he would have to suck it up and force himself to survive with relatively good notes this torment.
Then the ghost fights had entered the picture and his motive to keep up the grades had all but vanished, and the little time left behind to work with was not enough to make, at least, an average grade. He didn’t have enough reasons to strive for more.
For this though? A new chance far from the ghost and he could keep protecting her sister?
He had the brains. He had the passion. And a good damn motive to drive him forward.
Once he was done, the luggage - and Loony town - wouldn’t even know what hit it.
-.-.-.-
NOTES:
Also, the thing about Jack & Maddie not trusting Danny with the equipment was one of Danno’s secret tries at messing around with the things. Needless to say, that one time didn’t stay a secret.
Oh well, it was not like he asked for permission in the first place.
-.-.-.-
“fluffy-sweater clad toddler”
Not gonna lie, I made myself crave some cuddles from toddler danno, so. fucking. cute.
There he goeees just waddling like a little duckling asdfghjkl
-.-.-.-
If someone here is a fan of the Gotham Academy Comic I greatly regret -not really- to inform you I’m only taking hostage the place for my evil fanfic purposes. I don’t know if there is going to be references but that particular comic is not the focus of this story, SO. You have been forewarned.

The Devil’s In The Details
You stop by the morgue and find a crucial piece of the puzzle that leads you towards a unconventional solution.
Chapter 2: Consulting With The Experts
Your mind begins to wonder about this puzzling case while the surrounding world zooms past you in a dizzying blur. It all started with some missing people cases…well, you are certain that it started there. Your colleagues believe that you are chasing shadows, and that it really started with the recent string of murders.
On the surface, both the missing people and the murders do not have any connections with each other. But they do share at least one confirmed detail given from multiple witnesses and resources: they all acted strangely before either disappearing or becoming a victim of foul play. You know that the connection is pretty broad, but at the same time…a huge group of people exhibited dissociative behavior before meeting their current fate. Something in your gut tells you that it all just seems too convenient to be a coincidence, but multiple witness testimonies are not enough to connect the dots that no one else seems to notice.
You now have put all your focus on another plausible shared connection: the strange injection wounds found on the victim’s bodies. It’s also a bit of a stretch, but when you looked through all the accounts of the missing people cases again…a few minor details that were glossed over before are now glaringly obvious. Several accounts mention suspicions about the use of drugs being involved, and ten of those accounts include descriptions of seeing wounds that look to be inflicted by needles. That is one too many coincidences for your liking, but just mere conjecture will not be taken seriously by the higher ups…which is exactly why you dropped everything to go to the morgue.
Normally, you would go to a toxicologist for this kind of information, but Red Grave’s history with demons as well as the black market for their weapons and other nefarious goods steered you towards another kind of expert. Everyone knows that those who deal with the dead in this city have seen some pretty interesting deaths in their time…such as overdoses from otherworldly drugs or accidental poisoning from a mishandled weapon.
So, to prove that your speculations have merit, you have enlisted the help of Grayson Beckett a.k.a. Graves, the medical examiner who does not seem to mind his morbid nickname. He’s a little strange as all professionals in his line of work tend to be, but that has not stopped him from being one of the best in the field. His eccentricities have never stopped you from valuing his expert opinion in matters he’s more qualified for than you are. And it does not hurt that he is one of the few to also find all these oddities of this case to be quite perplexing.
Your inner contemplation comes to an end when you finally arrive at the police station of Red Grave City, pulling into parking space before cutting off the engine and removing your helmet. You shake your hair away from your face while gathering your thoughts, putting on that mask of professional stoicism as you hop off the bike. It does not take you long to track down Grayson in the morgue since he can always be found roaming around the cold chamber. He told you once that he finds it calming to pace around in there during his downtime…something about the silence of the deceased makes for perfect conversation whenever he needs to sort out his thoughts.
But when you walk into the macabre storage room, you find him pacing around like a madman, far from the epitome of calm and more like a vision of distress. He jumps back with a startled gasp before letting out a sigh of relief. “Ah! There you are, Detective…very timely arrival as always,” he greets, straightening his clothes before holding his hands behind his back.
“What’s wrong, Graves?” you inquire with a raised brow.
“Oh!” he gasps with a shake of his head. “Right…well, you see uh…” he trails off, shoulders twitching as he clears his throat, “…one of the body’s is uh…missing.”
“Missing?” you repeat, staring dead straight at him. “As in…”
“Gone!” he abruptly shrieks, waving his hands around wildly before raking his fingers through his hair. “It’s as if it simply got up and left!”
“Alright, slow down,” you urge him calmly while taking out your glasses, slipping them on before grabbing your sketchbook from inside your jacket. “Start at the beginning,” you instruct as your hand slides the pencil from the spiral spine before readying itself on a blank sheet.
Grayson takes a couple of deep breaths. “I came in first thing in the morning, like usual, and shuffled through a bit of paperwork before getting ready for an examination.” He walks over to one of the storage doors. “When I went to pull out the body in question, I noticed that the hatch wasn’t closed properly,” he informs while pointing to said hatch on the door before continuing. “It seemed very odd to me, but I chalked it up to maybe carelessness from one of the other examiners. But when I opened it up…” He grips the hatch and pulls the door open to reveal an empty chamber. “The body wasn’t there!”
Huh…San Diego’s theory has some merit after all, you admit wryly while finishing a small drawing of a zombie bride walking out from the storage chamber before launching in a series of questions. “You’re absolutely sure you were the first to arrive here?”
“Why yes!” he exclaims with a nod. “I always come in an hour before anyone else.”
“Do you know who was last here?”
Grayson shakes his head. “Not right off the top of my head, but we do keep records of our examinations. Let me just…” He goes over to a nearby computer and informs you that he is emailing the record to you while you jot down the possibility of the body snatcher being an employee here.
“Does anyone else have a key to this room?”
“Only me and the other two examiners have access as well as some of the higher ups,” he explains while tapping away on the keyboard.
“Which body was it?”
“The strangled victim from last week.”
Your brow quirks above the frame of your glasses as Grayson sends the email with one final click before turning around to share more details. “I was going to check it one last time before handing it over to the family…Oh how am I going to explain this to them?” he bemoans, sagging his shoulders as he lets out a dejected sigh.
“The security footage may have caught something as well,” you inform while gesturing towards two security cameras in the corners of the room with your pencil. You draw a noose around the zombie bride and write down that the missing body is one of the victims of your current case. “I’ll put in a report as soon as I’m back at the station,” you assure him a confident nod.
Grayson straightens his shoulders and takes another deep breath before thanking you with a grateful smile. You make a quick note about the cameras before closing your sketchbook with a sharp snap. “Now…you said something about results?” you ask, getting back the matter at hand while readjusting your glasses.
“That I did, Detective! Right this way!”
He motions you to follow him over to a small makeshift desk in the corner of the room, which acts as his office even though he has an official one outside the cold chamber. He opens a laptop covered with various punk rock stickers and signs into his work email. “After a bit of research and numerous email exchanges with the toxicologists, I’m able to confirm with utmost certainty that the strange substance is…” he pauses for the dramatic effect while searching for the appropriate emails, circling the important part of the exchange with his cursor. “Completely unknown,” he reveals with a curious lilt in his tone of voice.
“Why am I not surprised?” you mutter with a frustrated sigh.
Grayson nods in agreement. “Now, from what I was able to gather from limited resources on the streets,” he begins as his eyes flit from side to side even though he knows that you are the only one present with him. “This strange substance isn’t a new drug out on black market either,” he finishes with a secretive wink.
“And yet it’s administered through an injection,” you ponder aloud as your mind begins to churn with new theories.
“Yes, well…in my humble opinion, it appears to be more like a venom than poison since it needs to be injected in the first place,” he clarifies with a small shrug.
“A venom…hmm…” You flip open your sketchbook and take note of this new bit of information. “Any idea what this venom might do once it enters the system?”
“I can’t say for sure,” he admits with a sad shake of his head. “And there’s not enough evidence to support your theory about the victims being paralyzed, but that’s only because we were not aware of this mysterious venom at the time. If only we knew beforehand…we could’ve dug a little deeper,” he laments while looking at the empty storage chamber.
“Well, you’ll get your chance with this next body,” you reassure with a small grin while finishing up the last of your notes.
“Excellent!” he exclaims, face lighting up with childlike joy as he claps his hands in excitement. “Perhaps we’ll finally have some answers…right, Quickdraw?”
You chortle at him using your nickname. This little victory may not be enough to convince your superiors to validate your theory, but it could be the hairline sliver that leads to a crack in the case. So, you give into Grayson’s infectious joy for a moment and bring one hand up to tip your imaginary cowboy hat to him while putting on your best western accent.
“Sure thing, Partner.”
Grayson chuckles as you bid him farewell and take your leave. You flip through your sketchbook while you make your way through the Department of Criminal Investigations. Your mind starts to put a few key pieces together, hoping that it will be enough to convince the Lieutenant of your ongoing theory. The smell of freshly brewed coffee wafts under your nose as you enter the main office area of the department, reminding you to grab your first cup of joe in the morning.
You walk towards a group of coworkers surrounding Blaise Fuller, also known as Detective Douche, the fond nickname given to him by Carmen for his overall contemptible attitude. They all grow quiet as your approach and their eyes follow you as you pass them by, whispering in hushed tones while you pour yourself a cup at the designated coffee station of the department. He should be wowing me with his stellar observation skills, you surmise while sprucing up your coffee with a couple of sugar packets and a splash of creamer. Any minute now. You stir your coffee with a plastic stirrer before taking a long sip. In three…two…
“Well, well…looks like the Ice Bitch finished a little too early this time.”
You can practically hear the smarmy grin plastered on his mouth before you turn around to address him. Your eyes look over the frame of your glasses to focus on his smug face, pinning him down with your unimpressed gaze as you finish your first sip of coffee with a pleasant hum. “Funny…that’s what your ex-girlfriend said about you too.”
All traces of smug arrogance drop from Fuller’s face while a series of shocked gasps and stifled laughter sounds off from everybody within earshot. You honestly cannot tell if he’s angrier about the vulgar insult or the fact that said insult is the unfortunate truth. Maybe I hit him a little too far below the belt, you wonder as he squares up his shoulders and prepares to bite back with his own venomous rebuff. But then again, you do not have time for his juvenile attempts at getting a rise out of you. So, you put one hand on your hip and take another sip of your coffee, showing oblivious disinterest while waiting for what will assuredly be the most scornful slight of the century.
“Hey! Knock it off you two!”
Your eyes dart over to Jayce Spencer, your former partner before the promotion, standing there with a severe frown on his face. The resounding snickers from before gets cut short as everybody quickly disperses from the scene. Fuller snorts and gives you a deriding glare before rejoining the small group of co-workers by his desk. You move towards your own desk in the opposite direction, intending to check your email while waiting for the Lieutenant’s temper to cool off before presenting your findings to him.
“Detective Y/N! My office. Now.”
But it seems that you’re not getting off the hook so easily this time. A resigned sigh leaves your lips as you march towards the Lieutenant holding his office door open for you with a stern grimace. You enter the office and launch into an explanation as soon as the door clicks shut behind you.
“Before you go off on me, let me explain-”
“What the hell were you thinking leaving the scene of a crime that early?” he demands testily, brushing past you to sit down behind his immaculate deck. “We’re in the middle of goddamn shitshow out there and you skipping out-”
“With all due respect, Lieutenant, I wasn’t skipping out,” you cut him off as you take a seat in front of his desk before pulling out your cellphone. “I got a call from Grayson and went to check up on a possible lead.”
Jayce quirks a skeptical eyebrow. “Is that right?” You open your call log and show him the exact time of the call you received from Grayson. He takes a quick look at the screen before sighing deeply through his nose. “Well, whatever you have better make up for all calls from the press asking me to reprimand you for almost running over a few of their journalists.”
“Sorry about that, Sir,” you apologize softly, “…maybe next time they won’t block my way,” you mutter under your breath while pocketing your phone. Jayce just rolls his eyes at your flippant retort as you take out your sketchbook. “This is the fifth victim with the same exact puncture wound as the others,” you inform, showing the drawing of the victim and his wounds before handing your sketchbook over to him. “And Grayson helped me confirm that the substance found in the previous victim’s body is unknown to the lab and on the streets.”
Jayce looks over your various notes and sketches, nodding his head in agreement to some of your observations and raising a quizzical brow at the zombie bride. “Fuck…” he sighs under his breath as he hands the sketchbook back over to you.
“Yep. Fuck indeed.”
“So, we really do have a serial killer on the loose,” he surmises quietly as you put away your sketchbook.
“Possibly.”
Jayce rests his elbows on the desk and leans in closer as he scans you with his critical gaze. “What’re you getting at, Detective?”
You cross your legs and take off your glasses so that you could regard him with your solemn gaze head on. “I believe that demons are involved, Sir.”
“Demons,” he repeats with a blank stare before letting out a tired sigh. “Now, I know you check your boxes and cross your T’s more than anyone here, but I gotta ask…”
You let out your own exasperated sigh while pinching your brow. “Lieutenant-”
“Y/N…let’s drop the formalities and speak veteran to veteran.” His voice drops down low, sharp eyes clearly showing concern as he asks the question that you have been dreading since concluding demon involvement. “Are you sure you’re not just seein’ ghosts of cases past?”
Your eyebrow twitches as boiling anger surges through your body. “Fuck you, Jayce!” you growl, furiously hopping out of your seat and slamming your hands down on his desk. “You know better than anyone that I don’t let past feelings or trauma get in the way of my reasoning!” you argue, never tearing your irate gaze away from his worried face.
“Easier said than done, Hothead,” he counters calmly, not at all fazed by your outburst. “I’m only asking as a friend who, may I remind you, knows the truth behind what happened during our first case together.”
All your searing rage begins to bubble back down as you concede to his concerns. It still irks you that he still thinks that you have not gotten over what happened…but nonetheless, you know that it is within his right as your superior to question your state of mind. You curse under your breath as you settle back down in your seat, crossing your legs and huffing in defeat while he continues to stare you patiently.
“Are you seein’ ghosts?”
“No ghosts, Hard Ass,” you assert, “only dead bodies and a killer to catch.”
Jayce nods. “I believe you. But without sufficient evidence to support your claim…” he trails off with a weary sigh as he leans back into his chair.
“It’s fucking bullshit,” you grunt irritably, bobbing your foot up and down in frustration while shaking your head.  “We’re living in a city drowning in demons and they have the gall to-”
“I know, I know,” he interrupts with a wave of his hand, “but that’s precisely why we need the evidence…or else we’ll have every criminal we apprehend claiming that a fucking demon made them do it.”
A contemplative silence falls over the office and you go over the available options that will move the case forward. You cannot proceed the normal way; dealers in the black market are not known to help their local law enforcement catch a killer, especially if demons or Devil Arms are involved. What I really need is…Your foot stops fidgeting as the proverbial lightbulb blinks on above your head.
“What if we consult with an expert?”
Jayce furrows his brow in serious thought for a moment before the true intention behind your suggestion hits him. “You’re not seriously suggesting that we consort with a demon hunter, are you?” he inquires with an incredulous chortle.
“Yeah, I am,” you confirm with a curt nod.  “Hell, maybe collaborate with one since there were a bunch of them roaming the streets when that freaky tree cropped up a year ago.” Jayce gives you a bewildered look from across the desk, but you go on with your perfectly reasonable explanation. “Plus, some of them are well respected by the people…unlike some us here who swore to serve and protect.”
Jayce squints his eyes as he thinks it over, steadily staring at you while his face goes through a torrent of expressions: wariness, consideration, and dismissal before finally settling on a decision. “Goddammit, Y/N,” he mutters with a shake of his head. “You have anyone in mind?” he asks hesitantly, eyes gleaming with curiosity despite his apprehension.
“As a matter of fact, I do.” You straighten up in your shoulder and announce the best candidate with utmost confidence and conviction in your voice. “Dante, the Son of Sparda and Legendary Devil Hunter himself.”
Jayce’s jaw literally drops in shock. “You have got to be bustin’ balls! That nutjob has a file this long and there’s no way-”
“Which is why he’s the perfect man for the job,” you cut in smoothly before listing off the reasons behind your suggested collaborator. “He’s infamous around here; the richest of the rich know him from his father’s status and the lowest of the low know him from reputation alone.” You uncross your legs and lean in closer towards the desk. “And if we offer to wipe his record clean-”
“Say what now?” Jayce scoffs in disbelief.
“Then he may just help us without payment,” you finish with a nonchalant shrug while grinning triumphantly.
“Un-fuckin’-believable,” he mumbles, head hanging low as he pinches his brow. “You know that we’re not supposed to wipe records for cooperation, right?”
“Yeah, but we both know that only works on paper,” you refute smugly, crossing your arms and sitting back in your chair as you provide more incentive for your former partner. “And we might as well use his name to get the press off our backs since they’ll focus on him instead of how we’re floundering right now.”
Jayce glares at you before leaning back in his chair, staring up at the ceiling and rubbing his chin as he mulls over the plan you’ve just presented to him. You wait patiently, knowing that he is going through the other possibilities in his head before inevitably coming to the same conclusion as you did. Once a hard ass, always a hard ass, you observe in quiet amusement as he finally lets out a resigned sigh.
“Alright, fine. Go and find this crazy son of bitch…see if he’ll work with us in exchange for getting his record cleaned,” he relents, lowering his head so that his cautious gaze meets your determined eyes. “But I’ll warn you now: you’ll be walking a very fine line if you choose to work with a mercenary like him.” He gets up from his chair, moves around his desk to stand in front of you, and delivers his one final warning.
“Stay sharp. And for fuck’s sake, be careful.” He offers his hand as you stand up.
“Thank you, Lieutenant.” You take his hand and give it a firm shake. “You won’t regret it.”
“We’ll see about that, Detective.”
Jayce walks by you and opens his office door, signaling that this discussion is officially over. You exit his office and head straight to your desk, trying your best to hide your enthusiasm while considering your next step: there is still a key witness that needs interviewing, witness statements to look over, and the missing body at the morgue. But your gut instinct tells you to seek out Dante as soon as possible…maybe do a bit of investigating of your own on this prolific mercenary before heading out.
After all, the day has yet to truly begin and this Legendary Devil Hunter may very well be exactly what you need to solve this case.

not the place to fall in love: chapter one
read on ao3! [i didn’t format anything below the “keep reading”, so it’ll probably be easier to read on ao3]
Iwaizumi was stuck, perhaps perpetually, on level fifteen of Candy Crush.
Once, as a child, he’d dedicated an entire afternoon to climbing an unclimbable tree in his backyard. He’d grown quite a bit since then and a lot had changed, but the addicting taste of chasing a difficult victory bubbled in his stomach now just as it had under that tall tree so many years ago. The stakes were higher than they probably seemed from the outside; Iwaizumi’s honor waited at the finish line and his pride danced around the colorful screen, following his finger as it swiped left and right, up and down.
He’d had an audience that afternoon by the tree and he had the same one now. Oikawa leaned against Iwaizumi’s side, head resting on his shoulder. He seemed to understand how much rode on Iwaizumi’s performance; he oohed and aahed over each move, offering words of encouragement and advice which Iwaizumi would rather have done without.
Though Iwaizumi didn’t realize it in any way that he could express with words, a bubble of sorts had formed around the pair, as it often did when they were together. Passerbys skirted around it without consciously deciding to do so, as if they too understood on some unspeakable level that Oikawa and Iwaizumi, or more accurately, OikawaandIwaizumi, lived slightly apart from everyone else. Outside the borders of the bubble, the airport waiting area produced airport noises. Hidden speakers made booming announcements, feet clicked and clacked towards unknown destinations, babies voiced their dislike for the whole business of airports, and adults coughed and sniffed as they waited for time to pass and flights to arrive. Oikawa and Iwaizumi had claimed a corner of the airport waiting area, opting to relax picnic-style on the floor instead of in two of the many empty chairs nearby.
Iwaizumi made one final swipe before slumping against the wall in despair. You failed! flashed across his phone in bright colors.
“Ah well,” Oikawa sighed, giving Iwaizumi two pats on the shoulder. He slunk down too, crossing his legs and resting folded hands on his lap. “I’m pretty sure only old people are good at that game anyway.”
Iwaizumi glared. “Is that supposed to make me feel better?”
“No, no. Just an observation. I can try again though if consolation is what you’re looking for.”
“Go for it.”
“Gimme a minute,” Oikawa looked up at the ceiling as though his thoughts were stuck to the plaster. “Alright. I’m pretty sure old people are terrible at Candy Crush.”
“I think you’re missing the point.”
“On the contrary, I’ve found the point. See, I’ve always suspected my Iwa-chan was secretly a grumpy old man in disguise,” he sighed dismissively, as though the thought was almost too disheartening to address. “I just wish you would have told me beforehand. Your tickets would have been so much cheaper.”
“I think sitting here has made you stupider than usual.” Iwaizumi elbowed his setter, and, ignoring Oikawa’s protests at being treated so unfairly, moved to put his phone in his pocket. He hoped the turn of his shoulder was enough to hide his blush at being called “my Iwa-chan,” or that, at the very least, Oikawa had lost at least fifty percent of his perceptive abilities after being trapped in an airport with no stimulation for so long.
Iwaizumi had always loved airports. They were big, loud, and full of hope and potential: the kind of place that, as a kid, you’d long to sprint through at full speed without consequences.
Oikawa had always hated them. Iwaizumi could see that hatred now that neither of them were distracted. It bled from the way Oikawa scanned the crowd of unfamiliar faces around them, the way his rigid shoulders and stone-statue-posture screamed I am untouchable. It was obviously convincing, as anyone searching for spaces to camp out on the floor scurried elsewhere when their eyes reached Oikawa’s proud, rigid form. The fear and hatred made Iwaizumi want to grab Oikawa’s hand, but for the moment he wasn’t sure if the untouchable part applied to best friends or not.
He checked his watch. They had an hour or so before their flight would be ready to board. Despite his aversion to the place, Oikawa had insisted on arriving unnaturally early, and Iwaizumi had complied with minimal complaint.
Oikawa mirrored Iwaizumi and glanced at his own watch. “Do you think we’ll be late?”
Iwaizumi rolled his eyes. “Only if it takes us an hour to walk ten meters.”
Oikawa huffed. Iwaizumi took out his phone again.
For the next fifteen minutes, their bubble was uncharacteristically quiet. Iwaizumi resisted the urge to perform a victory dance after reaching level sixteen. An incoming text momentarily stopped him from lining up five purple gummies.
From: you know who it is
         iwa-chan~~
Iwaizumi swiped the notification away and watched with satisfaction as the five gummies disappeared. Level seventeen.
From: you know who it is
i can see ur phone from here :3 congrats on leveling up, old man iwa-chan
Iwaizumi flipped Oikawa off without taking his eyes from his screen, missing the strained smile he received in return. There was more silence. Level eighteen, then one more. Twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two. He reached level thirty before receiving another text.
From: you know who it is
you know, there’s an 86% chance we’ll both die if the plane crashes
That got his attention. He turned to look at Oikawa, who sat scrolling through his phone, expression casual and bored, as though he’d run out of things to like on Instagram and was most definitely not worrying about dying in a plane crash.
Iwaizumi had prepared for this moment. Oikawa’s anxiety was a vigilant companion; it never took a day off and spent most of its time searching for something new to latch onto which it could then suck the rationality and safety out of. In the past, it had made the setter afraid of coughing fits, books with an odd number of pages, eating out in public places, opened drawers, and rooms with too many people in them. Comparatively, flying was an easy thing to demonize. To ward off any excess fear, Iwaizumi had scoured over research and data on plane safety, committing them to memory in case they were needed. He’d tried to put himself in Oikawa’s shoes, tried to image how anxiety would twist the safety of air travel into something horrible. He had imagined dramatic explosions, smoke pouring out of engines and catching flame. He had armed himself with information contradicting these imaginings, just in case Oikawa needed it. He opened his mouth to say something about how their chances of dying were one in seven million when his phone, practically forgotten in his hands, dinged again.
From: you know who it is
maybe we should go home. lol
Iwaizumi put his phone away. He scooted away from the wall until they sat close together, knees touching. He poked the setter’s leg. “Oikawa.”
Oikawa continued staring down at his phone.
Iwaizumi sighed. “Tell me the stats for getting into your school. For getting into the volleyball program there.”
Oikawa shrugged dismissively, like someone who hates bragging but can’t tell the truth without unwittingly doing so. The movement made Iwaizumi want to headbutt him.
“Only three percent of the applicants get in, remember? Three percent.”
“I know that.”
“Then tell me, why should we go home when our chances of dying are dozens of decimal points below that percentage?”
Oikawa looked up and his eyes were wide with questions he probably didn’t want answered.
Aren’t you scared, too? Yes, Iwaizumi wanted to respond, but not of the same things you are.
What if they just send me back? What’s the point?
Iwaizumi’s own eyes were impenetrable and knowing. He stared back, hoping he managed to get his own silent message across. You are amazing. You deserve this chance.
A few long seconds passed before Oikawa broke their staring contest, eyes jumping over stranger’s faces, presumably to see if anyone had noticed his sudden break in character. “I suppose I can endure the devastatingly long flight. Even though it will be practically unbearable sitting next to a brute like yourself.”
“Good.” Iwaizumi cleared his throat and moved back to his original spot. He looked Oikawa over, relaxing at the way his posture was no longer screaming as much as it was talking. The setter waved to a baby sitting with its mother a few feet away and earned tiny smiles from both parties in return, mother and child hopelessly charmed by his easy smile and fluid movements.
Iwaizumi was charmed, too, and had always been. He was amazed by Oikawa’s ability to quickly recover from anything, to go from scrambling to find purchase in reality to storming forward with quick, confident steps. For the second time that day Iwaizumi felt the urge to take his hand.
He stopped himself, running his hand through his hair to chase the feeling away. He’d sworn to himself, and to Hanamaki and Matsukawa, that he would not come back to Japan without confessing someway, somehow. A crowded airport didn’t seem like the proper place and right before a fifteen-hour flight didn’t seem like the right time.
He didn’t expect the feelings to be reciprocated. They’d been best friends for so long that it almost felt impossible to make the trek from platonic intimacy to the romantic kinds without falling off the edge somewhere in-between. Besides, Oikawa had received so many confessions from so many people, each much better than Iwaizumi in every respect. And he had rejected each one with a sad, polite smile and a few empathetic words of kindness. It’s the moments after that Iwaizumi feared the most, the switch from being someone Oikawa didn’t have to handle with intentional delicacy to someone on the receiving end of pity and a false smile. The gap the truth might create between them, the spacing out of OikawaandIwaizumi, made him want to run home and crawl between the sheets of his bed and never come out again. But, Iwaizumi Hajime hated cowards and liars more than most anything and he had felt like both for far too long. In a way, he imagined spilling his feelings would work like a sort of redemption. He could reclaim his dignity, live without fear, and push Oikawa Tooru away forever. He hoped to minimize the force and longevity of the last part with distance and time; perhaps, with thousands of miles between them, Iwaizumi could move on or Oikawa could learn to live and forget and things would return to normal. Maybe. Hopefully. Whatever the outcome, Iwaizumi would not let Oikawa go without telling him everything. As long as he didn’t have to sit next to his rejector for fifteen miserable hours, everything would be fine. Probably.
Minutes ticked by in comfortable silence and Iwaizumi reached level thirty-one. Oikawa stood, stretched, and announced his decision to mark the momentous occasion with a trip to the bathroom.
Iwaizumi slid a red jellybean to the right. “I’ll watch our stuff.”
“No, no,” Oikawa hummed, pulling Iwaizumi’s phone from his hands and putting it in the pocket of his jeans. “You have to come with me, Iwa-chan. It’s boring doing it alone.”
“Do you think you could sound more perverted if you tried?”
Oikawa stuck out his tongue. “So immature,” he held out a hand to pull Iwaizumi up and dragged him over to the woman with the baby. “Excuse me, do you mind watching our stuff for a moment?”
The woman assured them she could and the baby babbled pleasantly in agreement.
For reasons only his heart could explain, Iwaizumi allowed himself to be pulled across the airport into the bathroom. He only half listened to Oikawa’s chatter as they went, hearing bits and pieces about the memes Hanamaki kept sending him, and doesn’t that lady right there look ridiculous in those clown shoes? Iwaizumi focused most of his attention on the firm warmth of Oikawa’s hand in his own, the way stranger’s eyes glanced over them and flashed with assumptions Iwaizumi could only wish were true. And then, too suddenly for Iwaizumi to keep up with, Oikawa stopped moving.
Iwaizumi collided into him with a grunt. He moved to get a good look at Oikawa’s face, scold and insult primed on the tip of his tongue, just to balk at the painful grimace he found there. He followed Oikawa’s shell-shocked gaze to see Ushijima Wakatoshi standing in front of one of the urinals, doing what one does in a bathroom. His gaze was firmly settled downwards and their entranced hadn’t seemed to break his concentration. Iwaizumi blinked a few times to prove his eyes were really seeing what they said they were before turning to try to share a silent conversation with Oikawa, to ask what the hell? and set up a game plan.
Should they confront him, tease the shit out of him (no pun intended)? Should they walk out and go about their day, knowing that, at any moment, they could run into the second most repulsive person on the planet? Should they pull down his pants and leave him stranded, alone in the bright white airport bathroom? But Oikawa was staring at Ushijima and seemed too busy having a silent conversation with himself to worry about Iwaizumi.
The next few seconds moved like solidified grease making its way into the trash: very slowly, with moments of gag inducing repulsion and general disgust. Finally, Ushijima zipped up his pants. Oikawa tensed, squeezing Iwaizumi’s wrist. He was trying to communicate something, surely, but Iwaizumi wasn’t given enough time to decipher the message before Oikawa flew into action, turning around sharply. Iwaizumi stumbled over his feet, shoes squeaking as Oikawa practically pulled him out of the door. Oikawa flipped the light switch just as they hit the exit and the bathroom flooded with black.
“Holy shit,” Iwaizumi hissed as the door closed behind him, leaving Ushijima trapped in the dark.
Oikawa continued to pull him forward, heading in the direction of their belongings. His voice was hoarse with nerves and conspiracy. “What the fuck, Iwa-chan?”
There had existed an unspoken truth between them that the airport represented a doorway to another universe. When they’d bought their plane tickets and printed boarding passes, they’d solidified the plan to leave their old world behind in favor of something new and unknown. When they’d stepped foot in the airport, they’d left the past waiting at the doorway. And when they finally boarded the plane, the world they’d shared together for so long would disappear like leaves scattering in the wind. Despite the existence of this truth, a piece of their past seemed to have crossed the threshold with them. And it was not a piece either of them would have chosen to pack in their carry-ons.
They arrived back at their luggage in record time. Oikawa sat up their suitcases, forming a barrier between them and the rest of the airport. He squatted behind it, only the top of his head visible as he scanned the waiting area. Iwaizumi joined him just as Ushijima walked out of the bathroom.
“He’s hideous,” Oikawa whispered. Iwaizumi nodded in agreement. They watched with horror as Ushijima made his way towards them, closer and closer to the bubble they’d created.
“Holy shit,” Oikawa wheezed. The shocking boyish-ness of the sound pulled all the dramatic tension from the air. Oikawa’s eyes shone with delight and repulsion. “Iwa-chan, oh my god. Look, look! He’s wearing crocs.”
Iwaizumi looked and saw that it was so. The shoes, bright purple, looked out of place in the stainless-steel backdrop of the airport.
“Holy shit,” Iwaizumi breathed. Oikawa couldn’t, or wouldn’t, stop wheezing, and Iwaizumi felt compelled to cover the setter’s mouth with his hands as Ushijima sat in a seat only feet away from their hiding spot. Iwaizumi stared at Oikawa and Oikawa, trapped in place behind Iwaizumi’s hands, was forced to stare back.
“What do we do?” Iwaizumi whispered. Oikawa shrugged. “He’s right there.”
Oikawa made some muffled attempts at forming words behind Iwaizumi’s hand before Iwaizumi set him free. “We could go get some plastic knives from the cafeteria. There are plenty of places to hide a body in an airport. Probably.”
“You’re a really shitty guy, you know that right?,” Iwaizumi chastised, voice slipping from a whisper back to it’s normal volume. Oikawa, returning the favor from earlier, used both hands to cover Iwaizumi’s mouth with a loud shush! Iwaizumi licked them in retaliation. Oikawa screeched as he pulled his hands back to furiously wipe them on his pants.
The arrival of a third party popped the bubble. Ushijima’s form towered over them. “Oikawa.”
Iwaizumi and Oikawa shared a look. Yikes.
“Ushiwaka-chan,” Oikawa replied, voice cool and detached. Teenage, boyish, silly Oikawa had waved sayonara and disappeared in half a second, leaving confident, collected, not-a-genius Oikawa in his place. He did not dignify Ushijima’s arrival by getting up, but instead fell back on his hands and looked up, like a beachgoer relaxing in the sand and staring with distaste at the hot sky above. He waited in silence, inviting Ushijima to continue.
Ushijima looked between the pair for a moment before clearing his throat. “I would refrain from using the restroom. The lights do not work.”
“Or maybe you just really suck at going to the bathroom,” Oikawa sneered, voice laced with so much poison it almost seemed as though he was wielding a dagger instead of a flimsy, pitiful excuse of an insult.
Ushijima stared. “I don’t think that is the case.”
For another long, uncomfortable eternity, the three shared the same air in dumb silence. To Iwaizumi, it seemed like Oikawa was drawing Ushijima into a silent dueling match and was waiting for his opponent to make the next move. It also seemed like Ushijima had no clue he was a participant in any kind of match, nor that there was a need to host one in the first place. When enough time had passed for Iwaizumi’s legs to start cramping, Ushijima nodded a sudden goodbye and left.
The pair sat in stunned quiet for a moment before Iwaizumi looked Oikawa over and rolled his eyes. “Real smooth, captain.”
Oikawa sucked in a breath of fast, disapproving air. “I pity the person,” he started, standing up and offering Iwaizumi his hand. His posture screamed I am a weapon. Do not touch. “who has to sit next to that on a plane.”
Iwaizumi grabbed Oikawa’s hand without question. “And you thought you had it rough sitting next to me.”

Mitty's unprofessional guide to Menus in RPGMakerMV
Tumblr media
Hello guys, Mitt here!
I'm here to give you guys some tips and tricks on how to tackle menus in RPG Maker MV! This will be another one of those big posts yeee!
Disclaimer: I'm far from being a good programmer, but I've learned a few things from trial and error, and I hope my tips will help anyone out there!
I'll also explain exactly how I did Marinette's current menus, and give you a few tips on how you can make something different from a simmilar concept.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I would like to first quickly mention the “Luna Engine”, which came out a while ago. I have never tried it, but it looks handy, and might be the way to go if you're willing to spend a few monies. I can't really give any advice on it though, so do your research first.
This post will be divided in 3 parts:
1. Evented Menus - Common technique, practice makes perfect, try new things.
2. Marinette's Menu - Combination of specific plugins.
3. Making your own menu
So let's get into it!
Tumblr media
1.Evented Menus
I figured I would talk about these here!
There are many ways to go about evented menus in any version of RPG Maker. It’s usually quite easy to adapt the method from diferent engines.
Sadly, I'm not very skillful with evented menus, so I can’t directly teach you how to build cool shenanigans, but I remember I made a very simple one for one of Marinette’s previous builds by following some tutorials. These might give you a heads up on how to start with interactable image buttons/ image based layout: [1][2][3][4]
After you get the hang of the mechanics, just start experimenting!
- MV has some performance issues, so it's important to fix those as well when using this technique (or similar) to avoid blinking pictures. There are some preloading plugins out there, but you can also manually load pictures beforehand.
- You can get plugins to the mix to make the job easier. (there are for example plugins that let you call events like they were common events, and another one that lets you assign common events to keyboard keys etc.)
- It's important to practise with dummy menus in projects, mess around with variables, conditions and pictures, and have a ton of patience. This is how you learn to make fancier stuff.
- It's better to pull off this kind of menus in shorter games, otherwise it can get really confusing when it comes to certain mechanics you might want to implement. Be cautious when deciding on making an evented menu for a longer game. (I’m primarily refferencing a fully evented items menu)
- If you find a developer with a really amazing menu out there, it's always nice to ask if it's evented, as you might get some tips from them! A few devs in the discord group are very skillful with evented menus of all kinds, so keep an eye out for them!
- If you just want to event the main menu, use the following script calls to call the other scenes:  (Also check out this helpful list)
SceneManager.push(Scene_Item); //Opens Items scene
SceneManager.push(Scene_Save); //Opens Save scene
SceneManager.push(Scene_Load); //Opens Load scene
SceneManager.goto(Scene_Title); //Goes to title
SceneManager.exit(); //Closes the game
The point is, you can do nearly everything (and sometimes better!) with events, as you can do with plugins. All it takes is a lot of patience and practise.
Marinette's current menus could’ve definetely been made with events to have animations and nifty details, but the approach I took was way simpler for me, personally, since I don't have much experience with detailed evented menus, especially when we go into the items, options, save... I honestly have no clue on how to make all those features work properly yet. It would be nice to study the subject one day, though.
Tumblr media
2. Marinette's menu
This is the part where I talk about our menu!
- I started by making a few mockups, which are just images with concepts for menus, from which I posted some in a previous post.
I knew I wanted to keep the map behind the menu visible, preferably either with the default MV blur effect or darken the screen a little. I also knew I wanted to be able to use the items from the menu since the begining.
Tumblr media
For both the items menu and the main menu, I used a combination of different plugins.
-Soulpour777's "Horror Menu Customizer" to draw out the simple options in the main menu, replacing the default ones. I also made a plugin myself, with heavy help from an online tutorial, that added an invisible window on the top left to center the image.
-Jiffy's "Grid Inventory" to make the item menu's layout.
-Nelderson's "Replace window with Picture" to draw out the images attached to each window. This was the only plugin that I found that worked with transparent images. Be mindful though, some windows overlap, and the images are centered on the top left of each window/ box. If I remember correctly, though, the "Menu Backgrounds" by SumRndmDde is also a good option to do this, but it turns transparency into black, which didn't work for Marinette. Also, disable the game's textbox frame unless you want it to be drawn on top of the images.
-Finally, SumRndmDde's "Super Tools Engine" was used to move around and delete certain windows/boxes that got in the middle of the layout I wanted initially. Basically it edits the boxes’ placement on previously made menus, like the grid items' menu and the main one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is how I went about the current menu, and it works wonders! ahaha
Even though I still have some images to finish for it, the layout is final for the most part.
Now...
3. Making your own menu
This is where you'll make a menu of your own!
The reason I explained Marinette's menu like that, is because you can use a simmilar combination of plugins to get any layout you want, with a little searching! Using this kind of approach makes it honestly easier for people like me who...sadly haven't learned how to code yet, but are eager to play around with it.
The first step would be to sketch out some mockups, having in mind the plugins that are available to you. There are a few instances where features you might want are harder to pull off yourself without knowing how to code for being extremely specific. An example of this is menus which open moving menus on the side or something like that.
This is an example of that kind of menu:
Tumblr media
This one would probably work best with eventing, if you don’t know how to code.
Be aware of your own limitations, but try to innovate!
With all this in mind, the steps to make a menu would be:
1. Pick a plugin (or just use the default?) that draws out a layout that you can edit with the Super Tools Engine. There are numerous plugins out there that do this, so it isn't hard to find one! Look for cool features in those plugins! Here, have a bunch
2. Edit that plugin with the Super Tools Engine to rearrange the windows or remove any you don't want.
3. Use Nelderson's "Replace window with Picture"or SumRndmDde 's "Menu Backgrounds" to attach images to each part of the menus, like a puzzle. Might require some trial and error, screenshot the window to get it right a little more easily.
Tumblr media
Aaaand that's it! You can probably change the text or replace it with images as well, but that calls for more plugin hunting.
Try to mix and match plugin features, ask for the help of coders and be patient! It won't be that much of a headache, and you'll be happy and relieved after finishing a pretty different menu! Also, go past page 1 in google ahaha
If you get stuck on something for too long, leave it and come back later when you have evolved your skillset like the programmer pokemon you are!
I hope this little guide helps anyone out there, don’t be afraid to contact me if you need help. I’ll try to help if I can!
Thank you so much for reading, I’ll see you guys later!
-Mitty

U.S. Covid Vaccine Provide: Methods to Make Sense of These Complicated Numbers Demand for vaccines is skyrocketing as the US grapples with a report demise toll from Covid-19 and the specter of new, extra contagious variants. After a sluggish begin in December, many states and cities have shortly ramped up vaccine supply, widening entry to bigger teams of individuals and establishing mass testing websites. However now there’s a brand new wrinkle: Some mayors and governors say they’ve run out of accessible vaccines, and have needed to cancel appointments. The Biden administration has promised to overtake the nation’s faltering vaccine effort, however there’s solely a lot it will probably do to extend the out there provide. Right here’s what you’ll want to know. What number of doses can be found? There are merely not sufficient doses of licensed vaccines to fulfill the big demand. And that isn’t more likely to change for the subsequent few months. The 2 corporations with licensed vaccines, Moderna and Pfizer, have every promised to offer the US with 100 million vaccine doses by the top of March, or sufficient for 100 million folks to get the mandatory two photographs. However that doesn’t imply these 200 million doses are sitting in a manufacturing facility warehouse someplace, ready to be shipped. Each corporations are manufacturing the doses at full capability, and are collectively releasing between 12 million and 18 million doses every week. As of Wednesday, practically 36 million doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines had been distributed to state and native governments. Nonetheless, solely about 16.5 million photographs had been administered to sufferers. However as native well being authorities grow to be more proficient at vaccine distribution, they’ll finally catch as much as the restricted provide. Some native officers, together with these in New York Metropolis, have mentioned they’re already reaching that time, and have needed to cancel appointments as a result of they mentioned they don’t have sufficient. President Biden mentioned he would use the Protection Manufacturing Act to extend provide. Will that assist? Vaccine consultants and the businesses themselves have mentioned that not less than within the brief time period, utilizing the Protection Manufacturing Act is not going to considerably enhance provide, though each little bit might assist. That’s as a result of manufacturing amenities are already at or close to capability, and there’s a worldwide race to develop vaccines that use a finite quantity of sources. Though the Trump administration was criticized for not utilizing the Protection Manufacturing Act extra aggressively to ramp up manufacturing of testing provides and protecting gear, it did use the act many occasions to give vaccine producers precedence entry to suppliers of uncooked elements and tools. In a plan launched on Thursday, the Biden administration indicated it might proceed to make use of the act to spice up provides wanted for vaccine manufacturing, in addition to different supplies which can be required to immunize tens of tens of millions of individuals. Though the plan offered few particulars, one instance cited is growing manufacturing of a particular syringe that may squeeze six doses out of Pfizer vials that have been initially supposed to include 5. What in regards to the federal stockpile of vaccines? There isn’t a vital reserve of vaccines to talk of. For probably the most half, vaccines are being shipped out every week as they’re manufactured. (The exception is a small emergency stockpile that the Biden administration has mentioned will proceed.) Final week, Alex M. Azar II, the outgoing secretary of well being and human providers, stirred confusion when he introduced that the federal authorities could be releasing a reserve of vaccine doses. Many states mentioned they have been informed that this meant an inflow of vaccines was on the best way, which could possibly be used to inoculate extra folks. In his information convention, Mr. Azar urged states to open up their immunization insurance policies, and mentioned they’d been shifting too slowly to make use of the doses they’d already been despatched. Consequently, a number of governors, together with Andrew Cuomo in New York, modified eligibility guidelines to permit folks 65 and older to get the vaccine. Nonetheless, senior administration officers clarified final Friday that every one of these reserve doses have been already earmarked as booster photographs for individuals who had gotten the vaccine, and that Mr. Azar was simply spelling out the logical extension of a distribution coverage that had been established by prime federal officers in December, when shipments started. The discharge of the reserve doses would go to individuals who wanted their second dose, not new swimming pools of people that have been getting their first shot. Going ahead, Mr. Azar mentioned, the federal government would shift to a brand new mannequin: reasonably than holding onto a reserve of booster photographs, every weekly cargo from the producers would come with doses for brand new folks in addition to second doses for these due for his or her booster photographs. President Biden echoed that coverage in saying his vaccine plan final week. Covid-19 Vaccines › Solutions to Your Vaccine Questions If I reside within the U.S., when can I get the vaccine? Whereas the precise order of vaccine recipients could fluctuate by state, most will possible put medical employees and residents of long-term care amenities first. If you wish to perceive how this resolution is getting made, this text will assist. When can I return to regular life after being vaccinated? Life will return to regular solely when society as a complete positive factors sufficient safety in opposition to the coronavirus. As soon as nations authorize a vaccine, they’ll solely be capable to vaccinate a couple of p.c of their residents at most within the first couple months. The unvaccinated majority will nonetheless stay susceptible to getting contaminated. A rising variety of coronavirus vaccines are displaying sturdy safety in opposition to turning into sick. However it’s additionally potential for folks to unfold the virus with out even figuring out they’re contaminated as a result of they expertise solely gentle signs or none in any respect. Scientists don’t but know if the vaccines additionally block the transmission of the coronavirus. So in the meanwhile, even vaccinated folks might want to put on masks, keep away from indoor crowds, and so forth. As soon as sufficient folks get vaccinated, it’s going to grow to be very tough for the coronavirus to search out susceptible folks to contaminate. Relying on how shortly we as a society obtain that objective, life would possibly begin approaching one thing like regular by the autumn 2021. If I’ve been vaccinated, do I nonetheless have to put on a masks? Sure, however not without end. The 2 vaccines that may probably get licensed this month clearly shield folks from getting sick with Covid-19. However the medical trials that delivered these outcomes weren’t designed to find out whether or not vaccinated folks might nonetheless unfold the coronavirus with out growing signs. That continues to be a risk. We all know that people who find themselves naturally contaminated by the coronavirus can unfold it whereas they’re not experiencing any cough or different signs. Researchers shall be intensely finding out this query because the vaccines roll out. Within the meantime, even vaccinated folks might want to consider themselves as potential spreaders. Will it damage? What are the negative effects? The Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine is delivered as a shot within the arm, like different typical vaccines. The injection gained’t be any totally different from ones you’ve gotten earlier than. Tens of 1000’s of individuals have already obtained the vaccines, and none of them have reported any critical well being issues. However a few of them have felt short-lived discomfort, together with aches and flu-like signs that usually final a day. It’s potential that folks could have to plan to take a time without work work or college after the second shot. Whereas these experiences aren’t nice, they’re signal: they’re the results of your personal immune system encountering the vaccine and mounting a potent response that may present long-lasting immunity. Will mRNA vaccines change my genes? No. The vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer use a genetic molecule to prime the immune system. That molecule, referred to as mRNA, is finally destroyed by the physique. The mRNA is packaged in an oily bubble that may fuse to a cell, permitting the molecule to slide in. The cell makes use of the mRNA to make proteins from the coronavirus, which may stimulate the immune system. At any second, every of our cells could include a whole lot of 1000’s of mRNA molecules, which they produce so as to make proteins of their very own. As soon as these proteins are made, our cells then shred the mRNA with particular enzymes. The mRNA molecules our cells make can solely survive a matter of minutes. The mRNA in vaccines is engineered to resist the cell’s enzymes a bit longer, in order that the cells could make additional virus proteins and immediate a stronger immune response. However the mRNA can solely final for a couple of days at most earlier than they’re destroyed. Will there be sufficient vaccine provide to present everybody a second dose? Federal officers have beforehand mentioned they have been working with states to trace who has gotten a vaccine, and when they’re due for his or her booster photographs, which is three weeks later for the Pfizer vaccine and 4 weeks later for the Moderna one. They’ve mentioned that every weekly cargo will give precedence to individuals who want their second dose that week, and no matter is left will go to vaccinating new folks. However the plan depends on state and federal governments working collectively and precisely reporting who has obtained a vaccine, and what’s wanted from week to week. Many state governments have complained they don’t have the sources to hold out the vaccine distribution plan, and the subsequent few weeks will show how effectively the system works. The incoming Biden administration has vowed to overtake distribution to the states, offering extra transparency to native officers about how a lot vaccine they’ll anticipate, within the hopes of permitting states to raised plan. Some Democratic governors have requested to purchase vaccines instantly from Pfizer. Is that potential? No, it’s not more likely to occur. Final week, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan requested the federal authorities for permission to purchase 100,000 doses of vaccine instantly from Pfizer. And on Monday, Gov. Cuomo wrote a letter to Pfizer asking for the state to purchase vaccines instantly. Pfizer and Moderna’s provide has been totally claimed for not less than the primary quarter of this 12 months, that means it’s unlikely there shall be any spare vaccine to promote to particular person states. As well as, the emergency use authorizations for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines stipulate that the federal authorities oversees distribution. In an announcement, a Pfizer spokeswoman mentioned the corporate “is open to collaborating with the U.S. Division of Well being and Human Companies on a distribution mannequin that provides as many People as potential entry to our vaccine as shortly as potential.” However she famous that “earlier than we will even take into account direct gross sales to state governments, H.H.S. would wish to approve that proposal.” A state official mentioned on Tuesday that the governor felt it was vital to exhaust all his choices, regardless of how unlikely they’d be succeed, and pointed to his efforts in March to instantly purchase ventilators from producers — establishing a bidding conflict amongst states that he later criticized the federal authorities for fueling. However advisers to the Biden administration have indicated that they don’t seem to be in favor of such a transfer. On Monday, Dr. Celine Gounder, a pandemic adviser to Mr. Biden throughout his presidential transition, mentioned permitting states to achieve separate offers would trigger extra issues than it might remedy. In an interview on CNBC, Dr. Gounder famous Mr. Cuomo’s earlier criticism of bidding over ventilators. “I believe this type of an method to vaccine allocation goes to consequence, frankly, in the identical sort of scenario that he, himself, was criticizing final spring,” she mentioned. Are we going to get extra vaccines anytime quickly? Sure, more than likely. No less than three different vaccines are in late-stage medical trials, and the success of any one in all them might imply tens of millions of extra doses for U.S. residents by this spring. Johnson & Johnson is anticipated to announce the outcomes of its vaccine trial any day now, and whether it is profitable, the primary doses might grow to be out there in the US by February. Though early manufacturing of the vaccine has lagged, the corporate has signed a deal to offer 100 million doses of its one-dose vaccine by the top of June. By March and April, outcomes from trials testing two-dose vaccines by AstraZeneca and Novavax may be made public. AstraZeneca has an association with the U.S. authorities to offer 300 million doses, and Novavax to offer 110 million. What’s extra, each Pfizer and Moderna say their factories are ramping up and increasing capability every week. They’ve signed offers to provide an extra 100 million doses every of their vaccines within the second quarter of this 12 months. When will we’ve got sufficient vaccines for everyone within the nation? It’s nonetheless not clear, though conservatively, there could possibly be sufficient vaccines by the summer season. If no different vaccines are licensed, the US has signed offers with Pfizer and Moderna for a complete of 400 million doses to be delivered by summer season, or sufficient for 200 million folks. That’s fairly near the American inhabitants of 260 million adults (the vaccines usually are not authorized but for kids though research are underway). But when different vaccines do show protected and efficient — which consultants say is probably going — tens of millions extra folks could possibly be vaccinated extra shortly, presumably by late spring. Hot YouTube Stars: Why Should YouTube Be Your Main Focus? - A Killer YouTube Strategy
Why not something other than what's expected like Meta Cafe or Viddler or other video sharing destinations? Why YouTube explicitly? We should see that now.
The First Thing Is That YouTube Is Owned By Google
As I've said beforehand. This causes them to surprise suggestions for YouTube and for its future. As you may know, YouTube started as an association that was not asserted by Google. Believe it or not, it was only for the most part starting late that Google got them.
If you look at Google and what they're on about, they're in the worthwhile game. They're enthused about benefiting Hot YouTube Stars on the web. Having an association like Google behind you can simply spell helpful things to the extent achievement to the extent benefitting.
Tumblr media
That is something different. Google has significant pockets with money. They can finance an association like YouTube for a serious long opportunity to arrive if they have to. They've decided to back YouTube considering the way that they've seen the potential that YouTube has. That is a genuinely clear sign that YouTube is a development you should keep an eye out for.
I accept they're the second most-visited website on the Internet right now. I think Google is #1. I should twofold check those subtleties there, anyway YouTube is colossal.
Google in like manner needs you to be viable. On the off chance that you're compelling, it will make them Breaking News Today more money as well and make them progressively productive. So basically the way that they're behind YouTube suggests that they're attempting to make YouTube as straightforward for you as possible to be productive.
If you look at the movements that YouTube has encountered since Google gotten them, you can see thrilling differences. You can see it in the AdSense program that has been introduced in the YouTube accounts. You can discover in the different structures and configurations that they've been advancing toward. You can see how YouTube accounts are situating much better inside the Google web crawlers. Having Google on their side is basically gigantic.
YouTube Videos Rank In Google Search Results
So you have that on your side. On the off chance that you're simply submitting to YouTube, your chances of getting situated in Google are so much higher diverged from the different video sharing goals.
 It's An Incredible Traffic Source
This is somewhat of a humble portrayal of reality, anyway in case you look at YouTube, they similarly starting late landed at one billion points of view for consistently. I'm for no situation sure in case we can picture that number, anyway imagine one billion coins, you'd apparently have the alternative to finish off a whole field stacked with coins. One billion points of view every day is colossal, and this is essentially from one site.
In 2008 an assessment was done that exhibited that there were 71 million stand-out customers in consistently. That number has apparently been superseded now, anyway this is the latest information we have on that particular estimation. It's a colossal notwithstanding. On the off chance that you're not using this as a traffic age source, you're leaving behind an extraordinary chance.
I think with the model that I used, FreeMagicLive, we've quite recently reached the surface. We've amazingly as of late begun to uncover what's underneath and we're presently sitting on 15,000 people on our email list.
It Is A Search Engine On Its Own
Have you anytime gone to YouTube and started searching for something, as in the request box straightforwardly here? A regularly expanding number of people presently are using YouTube as their guideline web search apparatus appeared differently in relation to Google. Is this perhaps an example that will continue later on and as opposed to people just doing chases on Google, essentially go to YouTube to do look? Perhaps YouTube will transform into the #1 site where people need to filter for information.
Think about this. What are the recommendations? In case YouTube is possibly going to transform into the #1 web crawler on the planet, what are the proposals for your online business? Besides, OK should be in the ideal spot at the right time with YouTube? I certainly think so.
YouTube Is Not Just For Teenagers Anymore
This is a request that I've had from numerous people. They state, "Sure, you had the choice to get achievement on YouTube, yet your market is only for youngsters." Now that may have been the circumstance when YouTube was basically starting, however at this point things have changed. Economics for YouTube are changing and they are changing at a gigantic rate. It's not just for youngsters any more, so in the event that you're exhibiting to other age social affairs, this is elevating news.
Youngsters are so far the most raised number, yet as you'll discover in a part of these bits of knowledge, YouTube is staggering for other age bundles as well. Look at this: 85% of the United States people has seen YouTube chronicles. That is gigantic. 85% of the whole United States has seen a YouTube video. This is unfathomable!
In any case, by and by, look at this. 71% of folks between 45-54 have seen a YouTube video. How cool is that? In addition, this is the other thing, look at all these other age bundles combined. These are people who ordinarily have money. These are people who have livelihoods and can stand to pay for something on the web. In case you incorporate all of these people, that is verifiably something past the youths.
Likewise, you'll see an equivalent example here for the females. Look at these paces of people who've seen YouTube accounts in their lifetime. It's not just youngsters. This is something to recollect when you consider using YouTube as a potential traffic hotspot for your site.
 YouTube Demographics Are Changing
It's not just for the youngsters any more. As those youngsters grow up, they become progressively prepared, they start landing positions, and they start moving into an other measurement themselves.
What we're seeing here is an ordinary new development assignment cycle. You may have seen what's known as the S-twist. It looks something like this, and this is an ordinary curve for new development that gets brought into another market. For YouTube it's the equivalent. They encountered a gigantic improvement arrange here. I think they bit by bit started in 2005 and a while later had this exponential improvement. We're sitting at 2010 right now, so this is the spot we are as of now.
That suggests that in any case you have a window of two years to begin acting dependably and to start doing stuff on YouTube, in light of the fact that this bit of the market here, none of these people are on YouTube yet. If this S-twist is legitimate, that infers there will be numerous people up 'til now joining YouTube, and you should be in the right position once they're all on the web and watching chronicles. You have to have your accounts starting at now up there by 2012.
It's significant that you start getting something on the web as fast as time grants, on YouTube explicitly. This is the spot things are at. This is maintained up by look at done by the YouTube 2009 Report. It's a free research organization that did the assessment for that.
We should continue forward. Think about the repercussions of these bits of knowledge. Consider these economics and what that suggests for you as a business on the web. In what manner may you position yourself with the objective that you can be in the best position when this standard, people in the US and the UK, hit YouTube and bounce on YouTube and start imparting on YouTube constantly?
What Are The Implications For Your Business Now?
What do you need to do currently to start getting ready for that? Think about that. I don't make it mean for you as of now, and I don't make it mean for you later on? There are starting at now things you could do now that could help you with getting set up later on for YouTube.
You have an early mover advantage. 2012 is a top for the standard in the US and the UK. I haven't looked for places like China or India, and their peoples are monster. That is the explanation I accept we're incredibly precisely close to the start of the curve still. If you have to join the whole experiences for the whole world, there will be some amazingly stimulating things happening for YouTube. That is my desire.
 The "YouTube Beach Head Strategy"
What is such an abundance of inciting? I'm an incredibly strong lover to focus. I got this system. I'm thinking about it the YouTube Beachhead Strategy. The inspiration driving why I'm doing this is in light of the fact that I really acknowledge that you need to focus all your thought on a specific something if you should be compelling. Focus on that, hit the nail on the head, and a short time later once you have it added to your collection, continue ahead to the accompanying thing.
So what is this? In direct terms, the Beachhead Strategy is to find a significant ball and accept the way things are. That is in reality all it suggests. It's connected to finding a significant player in the market, someone like YouTube for this circumstance, and essentially take the easiest course of action with them. Submit and use them as your impact. It's about focused impact, and place for this circumstance is focusing on YouTube.
Where did I get this idea from? I got it from an individual called Geoffrey Moore, a shocking driving force. He created a book called Crossing The Chasm for the front line industry. What he talked about was for any new development, you have this thing allocation cycle where it starts with the early trailblazers, early adopters, early larger part, late predominant part, and slumps.

Final Year of my MBA - Part 1 (Blog#8)
Tumblr media
While returning to school I realized that the upcoming year would probably be the last time in my life where I’ll get the freedom to try out different and new things. This became my mantra throughout 2nd year of my MBA – try everything different – probably stuff that I will never get to do again in life.
CAMs: The fall semester introduced us to Career Acceleration Modules (CAM). I came to US thinking that I would “major in Operations” specialize in Supply Chain Management and “minor in Finance”. I thought “If I have to understand how a company works I need to understand Operations and Finance”.
In both the cases Enterprise Engineering (EE) was my 1st CAM choice. EE introduced a lot of concepts in Operations, IT, Analytics and some in Supply Chain. I found the subject to be extremely dry and boring. I just couldn’t see myself doing Holt-Winters model in any organization.
Another CAM that I wanted to take was Finance. I wanted to learn about it – but honestly I was lucky that I could barely pass Finance and Accounting in 1st year. It was for the Sharks on the Wall Street. I wasn’t a Shark but a haddock at best. I also realized that no one is going to give me a Finance job just because I took a Finance CAM. So I decided to take Business Marketing a.k.a B2B CAM. I was able to connect to the subject and found it intriguing. I thought that it could help me setup for Product Management roles in a telecom organization.  The student consulting project for Cisco and the field trip to Lenovo at Raleigh, NC was also attractive.
I started Graduate Assistantship in the 2nd year. Steady flow of stipend was super helpful. There were lot of papers to grade and I had to schedule office hours for undergrad and grad students but it was fun. It was that time of the year where National Hispanic and National Black MBA Associations hosts their annual conferences.
Career Fairs: This time I was well prepared. I registered early. I realized that to be successful in a sea of similar students I had to stand out. I bought a pack of linen paper and printed my resume and cover letter on it. A recruiter will most likely keep my resume since it would feel different texture than other resumes on plain paper. I also did my research and targeted specific companies. I did not spend energy – as I did last year – targeting firms like General Motors or General Electric as I knew they didn’t sponsor H1B Visa for International students.
Further I customized my resumes for specific jobs at specific companies. I bought a paper folder, put my cover letter on the left, resume on the right, and inserted my business card as well. I went out to the booths of my target companies introducing myself and gave them my folder. This surely created an impression. I had also applied to various job postings beforehand and had 6-7 interviews lined up.
Since my positive experience with career fairs last year I pursued W&M MBA’s Career Management Center (CMC) for a more structured approach to MBA career fairs that included a CMC sponsored bus to the events. They listened. One of the conference was in Atlanta while the other was in Philadelphia. Time management was critical. I had to extract and utilize every possible minute of my day. While others would watch movie or sleep or chitchat on the bus. I would isolate myself to the back of the bus and grade the IT papers. Sleep a bit in the hotel and then research more on the companies that I would target.
Out of 6 or 7 interviews, 4 were for Leadership Development Program. LDPs are a rotational program where a company hires you and put you through various functions – Operations, Marketing, HR, Finance, Project Management, etc. The program usually lasts 2 years and at the end of rotations they will assess your fit and performance upon which they’ll offer you a position. This was very appealing. I had amazing interviews on-site especially with Sprint and The Hartford Financial. Only to learn that H1B sponsorship is not applicable for LDP programs. The remaining interviews also did not materialize to anything.
Home Depot: Home Depot hosted an invite only event in Atlanta. I couldn’t get an invite however I kept in touch with their HR and managed to get the invitation at Philadelphia in National Hispanic Conference. Since it’s invite only – Home Depot controls the event beautifully. 20 or so students with over 30 recruiters, Managers and HR. I had amazing conversation with one of them and he wanted to hire me for Supply Chain Analyst. “Awesome!!” I thought, but he said that the salary was $45,000 and in Atlanta. The first word that intuitively came out of my mouth was “NO”. My parents had put a lot of money into my MBA and I had done back of the envelope calculation. I needed a minimum salary of $85,000 to make my ROI work. $45k was an undergrad level salary. Unfortunately I returned empty handed.
CSSGB: In October I learned that Green Belt Certification Exam will be hosted in Richmond, VA by American Society for Quality (ASQ). Lean Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB) was on my radar. I initially wanted to get it done through electives during my MBA. I realized that doing it from W&M won’t get me the certification. If I take the exam from ASQ on my own instead, not only can I get the certification, but also I can get it faster and cheaper as I can then utilize those 4.5 credits studying something else.
That’s exactly what I did. In-lieu of car, I took the Amtrak from Williamsburg to Richmond. Spend the night at a 2nd year student’s husband’s apartment. Took the exam next day, changed two buses to reach the train station. Took the evening train back to Williamsburg. Amtrak cost me $18 each way. I was frugal. I had to be.
Few weeks later I got the good news and received my certificate in mail. In addition to PMP I was now a CSSGB.
Diwali Night: At the start of my 2nd year I had resigned from all the clubs – Operations, Consulting, Honor Council, MBA Association etc. as I wanted to focus purely on getting a job. However, I also wanted to do things that I have never done or will never do again. Enter Diwali Night. Every year the Indian students at the MBA program organize Diwali Night. Catering, Performances, Dancing – the whole works. It’s one of the most celebrated festivals at W&M.
I overcame my stage fright to participate in a drama and two dance numbers! Organizing the event, taking out time to practice the moves, selecting menu items, negotiating and organizing food pickups etc. was a great experience.
Job Search: Nearing the end of semester my GPA was in good shape nearing 3.5. My focus anyways wasn’t grades anymore it was finding a full time job. I was applying to jobs online morning, afternoons, evenings and night. One time I applied for a job posted at Deloitte at 2am only to get the rejection email at 2:25am. Either I was getting dumped by some automated process or an elf was working at Deloitte screening my application at 2:30am. Online application wasn’t working. I had to change my strategy.
2nd year classes ran Mon to Thu so Fridays were off. I bunked one Thursday and took the Wednesday night Amtrak to NYC. I spent Thursday and Friday meeting W&M MBA Alumni, networking, and introducing myself to Alumni across the NY and NJ area. The trip was helpful and insightful but didn’t materialize into anything.
It was November and I was getting desperate. I realized that my chances of getting a callback from big name companies like Microsoft, EY, KPMG etc. were slim. I started applying to Telecom companies like Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint thinking that they would appreciate my previous telecommunications experience but not a single call.
Now I started searching for jobs with keywords like Telecom + MBA to cast a wide net. I chanced upon a job posting by Cartesian. It was for Strategy Consultant. Luckily, as a part of their application process they gave their HR’s email id. I sent an email with my resume and cover letter. To my surprise I got a response in two days asking for my availability to interview.
Perhaps my luck was changing.

Content Design
Content is anything you create/consume/interact with.
What do users/people actually need from my portfolio? In order for me to present myself/get a job.
WANT V NEED; If someone is in debt, they are going to want a quick, simple solution. But what they need is a series of simple, manageable steps to help get them out of debt. This is what they need but not what they want.
Content can be anything. A combination of many forms could be what users need.
About me page in portfolio; could it be a video? A gif?
BOOK RECOMMENDATION; Content Design By Sarah Richards. Sarah worked on the .GOV website which is amazing looking now but when she started it had 30,000+ pages. So she printed all the pages out, laid them all out and the team walked about deciding what pages were essential and what weren’t. She paid a lot of attention not only to the content itself but also the way people talk about the content. Eg; people tend to use the word doctor as opposed to GP. Intuitive content design in action.
It’s important to put hours into the development of the content of your website. Content needs to be easy to find/use/consume.
Gazillions of webpages on the internet. Unless you’re incredibly specialised ie a government website, there are going to be competitors. You need to develop smart content. Design entrepreneur vs designer? Innovator or disruptor? We don’t want more content, we need smarter content.
Push vs pull content
Trust
Ease of use
PUSH CONTENT; look at this new iPhone, buy it! Ie bus stops, it’s THERE PULL CONTENT; This cool new phone makes your life easier and puts the entire world in your pocket, and it’s only £500. Pull content is you pulling it towards yourself ie searching things or following links etc.
Turning push content into pull content is an important skill. Your content needs to standout. Any push content can be turned into pull content, all you need to know is what your audience wants to see.
Why are we creating portfolios? MONEY. Good work will get you more work! Kyle ranks this as the most important thing. Portfolios should illustrate your work, your skills and how to contact you!! A bit about who you are is very good also.
People will pay more to use a good product. If a website is easier to use people are more likely to use it, even if the service is more expensive than a more difficult to use website. You need to make sure your website works and they can find your content. Your website has to be really good because employers KNOW what they’re looking for and they know what you’re talking about.
BRIEF; Portfolio Site and Content Strategy Example; Garry’s website. 3 portfolio items minimum.
Each portfolio piece should have its own page and case study; pics and exploration of the brief and process etc. Link blog through case studies? Words and images; prototype, video! It’s up to you!! App prototypes in invasion etc
CONTENT AUDIT; If you’re working on any kind of redesign project you’ll have to do a content audit Compiling all the content into a big list. Full content inventory
What are they used for? The list of content will come in handy at various stages of the project. If you’re redoing the information architecture you’ll come back to it again and again. It will give you a better idea of the content that you already have. Pre-courser to content analysis.
What to include Nav title Page name URL Comments Content hierarch

Tobias Van Schneider An incredible beard; the moustache work is a thing of beauty. First page is who is and what he does. Semplice, GOOGLE THIS Latest instagrams in the html not a link, a showcase. He doesn’t demonstrate much work because he’s working for other companies but his website is still slick.
Lefft (Paddy Donnelly) Illustrator, blogs are individual to the project he creates. Newsletter, styles his articles very well, about him page, links used. Colour changes of text to highlight. Paddy exhibits his work straightaway. Cloud whale is amazing.
Both he and Tobias have their own newsletters, Tobias also has a podcast. CONTENT EVERYWHERE. A newsletter could even be things you’ve found on the internet this week, or facts you learned or new words you heard etc.
Wenizhou Simple grid but exhibits her work immediately, and it’s lit. Little animations that are easy to do. When you click on each piece of work it talks about the project, this is what we need to. Her process is amazing.
Shantell Martin Unreal, I love her. Her website and the way she’s used photography is amazing. Detailed discussion of each piece within the page and how she arrived at the end product. Lots of photos. Website is fluid as heck. Worked with Kendrick.
John Hicks Big headers and pieces that take up the whole screen. Lots of content without over crowding. Then case studies which are very important. You can talk about what was easy and also what obstacles you encountered as well. Downloadables? Goodies.
Brian Holf Home page is one portfolio item but it changes the odd time, keeps the site fresh, not the same viewpoint every time. You can then go into the case study from the piece, takes you to an individual page. Contact deeds at the bottom along with an “All Work” button.
Case studies are so important! Four case studies looks far better than four finished pieces.

CONTENT DISCOVERY AND RESEARCH Discovery is an important process! Not just dribbble. Prototyping, attempting to build so you can see what works and what makes sense. Problem solving. Not all looking at computers, a lot of it is discussion. Understand the problem. Understanding comes from discussion. Discovery helps you discover your audience, what you think you want, what you need, when you should publish that and the channels in which to do that. Using discovery to bring people with you. Sometimes you have to sell things to people. Content discovery as a team is a great way for everyone to be involved at an early stage and dissolve confrontations etc. Everyone has a chance to share. Everyone can see the same data or idea. Helps build a collective understanding and appreciation.
Figure out who your audience really are, what they want from you and how to speak with them. You need to know all this before you write a single word.
What can you do for them? What is your skillset? What have you done and how did you do it? Understand beforehand. Your audience are human beings as well. Writing good content with real human language is what gets you ranked on search engines etc. You’re writing good content for humans.
Sometimes the audience you think you want isn’t the audience you’re actually creating content for. Finding your audiences vocabulary. What vocabulary are you using? What words are your audience using? Search data = the words people use. Google trends for example.
Web designer is OUT. App design is IN. Content strategist is solidly known. UX design is on the rise.
Using web analytics and metrics. Login to your gmail and it starts working, telling you how long people spend on your site etc etc More vocabulary, what your readers want to know most, their mental models. Unique visits. Bounce rate. How long people spend on your page; time spend there.
Digital language and spoken language. Absence of body language. You don’t put search terms into google the way you’d ask a friend. Language patterns, common usage.
Narrow it down; what do you do? Can you do it? How can I contact you?

Car Insurance parked hit and run question?
I have USAA as my auto insurance. Here's the back story. I was parallel parked alongside a street here in Atlanta and a car (more than likely) was trying to get out of his/her space and hit the left driver side bumper pretty hard (ruining the paint and loosening up the bumper pretty good...and cracking the tail light). This person did not leave a note. I have my 500 deductible. I also have uninsured motorists coverage. Right now USAA is saying that I will have to pay the $500 ded. Why couldn't they put it under the uninsured motorists coverage I have instead so I wouldn't have to pay a dime? Is it within reason to call them and ask for this issue to be adjusted? If so, what points can I make to insure I get the deductible taken care of under the uninsured motorists coverage? Thank you for your help!""

How much would insurance be per month for a 17 year old driving a 2014 Mazda 3?
I am 17 years old and just graduated high school. I will be 18 in 5 months. I am looking into buying myself a new car. I know all of the responsibilities that comes along with buying a new car and talked to my parents about it. I did my research and I found that a new 2014 Mazda 3 is only $200 a month. Which I can afford. However, I was wondering how much insurance would be. I looked up a few quotes but I'm not sure how accurate they are. I was wondering how much other people were paying. Of course age is taken into consideration so it will be higher. However, if it will be too much I am planing on going under my fathers name since he is much older and clearly has more experience. So if anyone would like to help me out and tell me what they pay for insurance it would be very helpful! Thanks!""

I'm a young driver who's only just passed. Is it OK to put my Dad as the main driver when in reality I will be driving the car most of the time? I heard it's cheaper that way. Estimated car insurance cost for an 18 year old beginner driver?
I waited until I turned 18 until I went to get my drivers permit. I've had my permit since November 18 2009. I plan to stay on the permit until its expiration date. I'm not sure what car I plan to purchase after that, something affordable (nothing over the top) and that will last quite awhile. Now assuming all that, can any of you share with me what your car insurance payment is monthly, just an estimate of course. And throw in what type of car you have in so I can get a better idea. I'll be 19 at the time I finally get my license. My parents will not be adding me to their insurance, I have to pay for this on my own and I'd like to start putting some money away towards it so that I can make the payments with no problem later on. Are their any other things I can do to lower the cost of my car insurance as well?""
Why is the co-pay for dental insurance more expensive than health insurance?
I compared the co pays on several reputable dental insurance companies and it is very expensive. Many things are not covered, even with the best dental insurance. Health insurance is usually a 10 dollar co pay for primary physicians and a 35-50 dollar co pay for specialty physicians. Is there any reason why dental insurance co pay is as expensive as it is?""

Subaru Used Cars - The Tribeca
When purchasing a utilized car, you need to know that there is a right time for it. When a new established of brand new vehicles are introduced to the community, this is the very best time to obtain a used vehicle and this will consider place between the month of August till the thirty day period of November. This will mean only one thing, a great deal of vehicle proprietors will dispose their automobiles and purchase a new 1. Ford wanted its Volvo functions to create a vehicle that could contend in the North American compact marketplace place. When each designs were formally launched in 2000, the Volvo used a 1.nine-litre, 4-cylinder engine that was turbocharged. Some of the bad reviews that I have seen on various web sites recommend that the motor is not powerful sufficient, it lacks the speed to compete towards the likes of a BMW 3-series or a Mercedes-Benz C-course. The 1 factor I did arrive out with when researching about this specific brand name, was how these Volvo auto note buyers have fantastic gas stats. So the base line is that the seller of Previous Muscle mass vehicles for sale is the only dependable source of information. But when you go to these sweet talking, hard promoting salesmen you will most probably not get the correct info if you pay attention to their phrases. You have to carefully analyze the non verbal cues. No you don't have to be an expert at body language for this. It's just plain common feeling. Prices of vehicles sold at vendor auctions tend to be reduce than these marketed on any dealer's great deal. Sellers forgo a potentially greater sticker price to consider their inventory to a dealer auction where it will be auctioned off for thousands less than retail for a quantity of factors. Costs are determined with who attends the auction that working day, what time of the working day the car is auctioned, the period of the year, the climate, etc. Your best bet is to attend an auction a number of occasions to get a really feel for the pacing of the event. Some automobiles go for much greater prices on some times and some automobiles go much less expensive on others. Search the web. Any product for sale are advertised on the web. In addition to that, you will have a great deal more choices to choose from on the web as it isn't geographically limited. Be it a used ford ranger, a nissan navara or any other car loan kind that you want to have, certainly you will find a fantastic offer on-line. It all started in Bradenton with what I thought was a toothache. I have a dentist (in Brooklyn), but in all fairness to the dental profession, I haven't noticed him in sixteen years. I brush twice a working day and I should be a real glutton for punishment because I use Listerine every evening. Anybody who spends 30 furthermore seconds with a mouthful of Listerine, will attest to this. In spite of this nightly ritual, the tooth demon is choosing on me and so, I known as my Dental Insurance coverage Rep begging for a referral. The voice on the other finish of the telephone provided me 1. There's so numerous vehicle designs to pick from nowadays. Actually the choice is mind-boggling. If you haven't made up your mind you certainly will find it actually hard to choose that very best vehicle when you go to a used car purchasing great deal. It is much better if you do your research beforehand concerning your favored car. Know what dimension vehicle you want. For occasion, when you have a massive family you will require to go for a bigger 4 doorway although if you journey a lot an SUV is a great option. Psychiatrists have been telling us that we can't help ourselves simply because melancholy deprives us of our will. This is not true. Melancholy does not deprive us of will or option. It simply deprives us of inspiration due to the hefty toll the tension chemicals wreak on our metabolic method. If depression deprived us of will, we would not be in a position to do so a lot as to raise up our own arm. Will is not quantitative. It is qualitative. Motivation is quantitative. It is the feeling of wanting to do some thing, in degrees of more or less.
