So, in Brazilian police brutality news, nine people have died and twelve have been injured during an operation of the Military Police in a party (with over 5,000 attendees) in the Paraisópolis favela (favela: “a unique, low and middle-income, and unregulated type of slum neighborhood in Brazil that has experienced historical governmental neglect.” [Wikipedia]), in the city of São Paulo. The dead were all between 14 and 23. The police officers claim they were chasing two criminals who had shot them then used the party goers as human shields. Locals deny there were shootings and say the police had closed off the street in order to, due to the noise, repress the party - which was a "Baile funk", aka a party in which the music played is funk, “a hip hop style from Rio de Janeiro, derived from Miami bass and gangsta rap music” (Wikipedia), and with a mostly racialized public from lower socioeconomic status.

The police officers say the tumult was caused by the two criminals getting in the party still shooting. After having stones and bottles thrown at them, the cops reacted to it with stun guns to disperse the crowd, they say. The confusion that was upstarted caused people to run frantically into an alley. The police officers say they didn’t shoot, and that the victims were killed from trampling in said alley.

Locals say the police arrived closing off from both sides the street where the party was hosted, and that they fired guns, threw gas bombs, rubber bullets, and bottles, hit with batons, and used pepper sprays against the crowd, besides slapping and kicking people already immobilized. People ran into alleys, where they were cornered and continued to be beat up by the cops. According to them, the victims (none of whom even lived in the neighbourhood) fell either from trampling or from police violence. It’s been reported that an unidentified young woman called for an ambulance saying she and a friend had been beaten by police officers, that a bomb injured his legs and blew the boy's eye, and that there was sexual violence going on and other victims at the scene. The call, however, was allegedly cancelled by a firefighter, who claimed the Police had already provided aid to the people in the party. Another person has claimed the Police hindered civilians from helping people running away from the tumult.

Six cops who were in the operation were put on leave (or “preservation”, according to their commander). Investigations on the incident have been started by Civil Police and the Military Police’s Internal Affairs. Death certificates claim asphyxia and back injuries, but forensic reports with more details are yet to come. Locals pacifically rallied at Paraisópolis against the police’s actions. An ombudsman for the Police said the protocol for operations at bailes funk has to be changed, and such operations should happen before the party starts. Governor João Doria has stood by the cops’ version of the events, said that protocols would mostly stay the same, and that operations on bailes funk at Paraisópolis would continue. There are going to be operations at this weekend’s party, one week after the deaths.

Dennys Guilherme dos Santos Franca, 16 years old. He was a Young Apprentice in a telemarketing company and liked playing soccer. His sister says that, in the tumult, “he fell and a friend came to the rescue and the policeman said: you can let us take care of him.”

Marcos Paulo Oliveira dos Santos, 16. “He was such a quiet, loving young man, very affectionate with us, he was homely. We even thought it strange, because it was the first time he was there at the baile funk.”, a relative said.

Gabriel Rogério de Moraes, 20. He had gone to the party due to friends’ insistence. “To me, he was a blessing from God. Like every young son has his moments like that, his way, but I tell myself that I couldn't choose another child. It was that one right there. So for me it's a very big loss. And that's it, folks.”, his father said.

Gustavo Cruz Xavier, 14. He was a quiet boy who liked electronic games and dreamed of becoming a lawyer or a soccer player. “A lot of people think to funk parties only crooks go. It’s not just crooks, guys. Good people go to enjoy. That's what there is for young people today. What do people give youngsters today to enjoy? What options does he have to enjoy?”, his godfather said. “Guys, it's a 14 year old, 16 year old, or 17 year old. I'm here today, and there are other families who are in the same situation as we are. I just want to know the reason for all of this to have happened.”, his aunt said.

Mateus dos Santos Costa, 23. He sold cleaning products. “His mother had countless heart attacks, countless strokes, is on wheelchair... Think how it is for us. And yesterday, to give the information, his sister is nine months pregnant. I didn't know, I thought she had already delivered the baby.”, his sister in law said.

Eduardo da Silva, 21. He was a workshop assistant and lived with his family. He’s survived by a three-year-old son.

Bruno Gabriel dos Santos, 22. The youngest of four siblings, he was celebrating his birthday with his friends.“My mother was waiting for him for lunch, due to his birthday, to cook the food he liked, strogonoff.”, his sister tells. “But who arrived a moment later? His friends asking ‘Where's Bruninho [little Bruno]? Bruninho?' My mother said, ‘He’s at his friends’ house, celebrating.’ And then the girl started crying, showed the video, he with his body upwards. And there my mother already said: 'he is dead, he is dead'. Mothers aren’t fooled.”

Denys Henrique Quirino da Silva, 16 (was about to turn 17). Worked as a tapestry assistant and enjoyed going to funk parties. “I stayed up until almost two in the morning waiting for him to arrive.”, his mother says. “He didn't come, I slept, I woke up with a tiny heart. But then my phone rang, I answered the phone and it was from a hospital. I lost my youngest son, my baby. I lost my son.”

Luara Victoria de Oliveira, 18. Orphan, she was raised by her grandparents, cousins, and parents’ siblings and lived with a friend. “She was still so full of life, had plenty to do in life. But what can we do? A person who had a good heart... It’s complicated.”, a cousin said.
