A little heads up
IDK if u follow my gaming alt in tw (where I post splatoon OC stuff), I just wanna say I deleted some old asks about my moomers because I will probably not follow through on some of them lol. This is why I'm not gonna answer some lore-related ask to them anymore.
Another thing I wanna include here is that I'm not gonna answer ask about my process. There are artists out there who can articulate and teach their process better and I'm not one of them. Please don't think of it as me keeping it to myself because honestly, answering these stresses me out and I'd rather focus on my thing rather than force myself to pinpoint the details of my process that I can't explain very well to others.

It's important to play a "LEVEL UP!" sound effect in your head whenever you get better at a skill because the world is flawed and so this does not happen automatically.
Often, in this life, we must provide our own sound effects.
#original#life advice#you can read this as a metaphor but i literally do mean that today i learned a lot about drawing backgrounds and upon surveying my work#i took a moment to imagine - as vividly as i could - a garbled video game announcer voice going LEVEL UP#it's garbled because sound files on classic video games were compressed as fuck and i am imagining like... a ps1 era game.#the kind where it holds up really well to this day and in all of the continuing sequels they#still use a lot of the same sound effects because they're so recognizable and iconic. I can picture the graphics and everything.#what does yours sound like or look like?#it isn't actually important that you do this specific thing but it is good to recognize when you're getting better at something#my favorite thing about learning to draw is when I can focus on a really good tutorial and#improve a skill so quickly that it really feels like I filled out a skill tree with my XP#it isn't always an immediate improvement but i am so low level in background illustration that i still level up with just a little XP#whereas if I want to get better at drawing expressions I don't think there is a single tutorial that will cause me to level up on its own.#just because this is the thing I've always focused on for most of my life and so a lot of the tutorials don't have new information for me#so that skill is at a point where it's just gonna improve slowly as i practice and pick up tips over time.#but I know so little about drawing shops or castles that literally one page of information is increasing my knowledge by 20% at least#Pro tip: the Etherington Brothers tutorials are so good and I was able to find several hundred for free on their website#so good#etherington brothers#how to think when you draw

ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE WAS A KNIGHT...
the visual inspiration for this was a combination of Frederic William Burton's Meeting on the Turret Stairs and also Bernardo Cavallino's The vision of St. Dominic receiving the Rosary from the Virgin
this was supposed to be just a one off illustration to get the thoughts out of my system, but then I started thinking about medieval politics and warfare and plagues and a castle and home as both a place of refuge, a prison, and a tomb, so perhaps they will end up as ex voto characters as well.
you may say, hey! that rosary looks like it has too many beads! it's a fifteen decade rosary, probably. dominicans are really into marian devotions. it works out.
also. spiral style stair cases. oh boy. it was that unexpectedly more difficult than I originally thought it would be to draw. the more I think about it, the less I understand them, even though I had a million photos of the stairs in front of me while I was drawing it.

#the economy and my bank account are in shambles and i ended up stress drawing this whole thing in one go#its so many lines. the next time i draw this. because i will be revisiting this composition. i want to use a different inking brush#i think. but the next time i draw this it will be with solid blacks on the stair case steps i think#hey here's a fun fact for those of you who aren't catholic. did you know that kissing the ring of the pope/a cardinal/etc#grants you an indulgence. cardinals also used to kiss the pope on the mouth. also foot and hand iirc. anyway#there are no cardinals in this drawing but im saying if you write medieval/renaissance smut about men of the cloth#you can really amp up the friction between holy and seductive with a lot of the (gestures vaguely) that.#actually another fun fact about cardinals. their fun sun hat (it's called a galero) has some fucking weird as hell fever dream (literally)#origin lore. so if seductive isn't your thing. the horror of a thing that you wear is also extremely fun#esp when you get into medieval gender performances of clothes and how they define a person etc#generic medieval tag#original tag

#poorly drawn mdzs#better drawn mdzs#mdzs#wei wuxian#Despite a whole ass inspiration board for reference - it turns out drawing and colouring half submerged people is a CHALLENGE.#I am channeling the zoobie bunny and internally screaming “WHY DID YOU THINK THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA”.#What I wanted was a cool transition between present and past! What I got was a very full mouth of my own foot!#That said: there are aspects I really like about this one and I feel like I got most of the way to where I wanted it to be.#Water is hard to draw and I am saying that even after dedicating a full 4 page comic with people in the water.#Forget hands. Water is my new nemesis.#I love how floaty this flashback transition was. The hazy mind wandering as LWJ carries him as a set up to recollection!#Aren't memories an incredible thing? To relive a moment in your mind? To have time repeat again and again?#And yet it is always a little different when we go to recall it once again. We are different people than the person we once were.
