And while we don’t have confirmation, we can assume Adrian did as well (I mean look at him and tell me this guy was not private school kid)

Then that would mean these two

Akaashi Keiji is the type of guy that would always bring you flowers just because. He’s the type of guy that could probably handle you no matter how crazy you are. Akaashi Keiji is a person that would always stick by you and cares for you in your lowest times. He’s the type of man to read books to you while you cuddle.
He’s the type to always remember the small details. He’s the type of guy that would practice saying “present” when his teacher is taking role because of his social anxiety. Akaashi Keiji always messes with his hands when he’s anxious. He’s the type to make pinky promises with you and never break them. Akaashi Keiji is a big tease.
He’s the type of guy that if something caught your eye he would buy it for you the next day. He’s the type of guy to help you study if you’re struggling. Akaashi is the type to ask you if he can hold your hand etc. because he likes consent and making you feel safe is important to him. Akaashi Keiji is the type to always and I mean always write you love letters because he just can’t help himself.
He’s the type of guy that if you had a bad day he’d make or get your favorite meal and let you vent out to him. He’s the type of guy that would hold your hand or rub his thumb over your hand when either of you guys gets anxious. He’s an amazing gift giver because of how observant he is. He has the type of eyes that you could just get lost in over and over again. His hair is probably really soft to run your hands through.
He’s extremely insecure about his hands even though they’re perfect. He always compares himself to others when he does something wrong even tho he’s perfect the way he is. He loves reading but loves reading even more in a cafe. He doesn’t enjoy studying much but he does it anyways. He always finds out a way to deal with Bokuto. He may lose his temper rarely but when he does he always makes it up to you. Akaashi is the type of guy that tends to keep his problems to himself and that leads to them piling up.
He’s absolutely willing to dance with you in the rain. Akaashi Keiji loves to cook with you. He always says good morning and goodnight. Akaashi is the type of guy that would stare at you for a long time and never notice until you catch him but he still ends up doing it every time. He’s the type of guy that always, always hypes you up, he’s your number one supporter. He loves when you come to his volleyball games and support and Cheer for him, even though he’ll get nervous.
Akaashi definitely gives you pet names like “my love” or “darling”. He’s the type that will not let you open or hold doors while he’s around. He loves forehead kisses whether it’s giving them or receiving them. He’s the type to hum songs that are stuck in his head. If you fall asleep somewhere he’ll always carry you back to bed. He’ll gladly give piggyback rides. Bookstore dates, coffee dates, boba dates, study dates, and stargazing dates are a must, with Akaashi. He’s the type to have such good handwriting that it makes you jealous.
He always cherishes every gift you give him, big or small. He’s the type of guy that would have a hair tie on his wrist just in case you need one. I know for a fact if you bought him flowers he’d blush like crazy. Even though it doesn’t seem like it from the outside, I swear if you date him he’d actually be a huge dork <3. He’d be so happy if you and Bokuto were friends.
If you beg him enough Akaashi would wear matching outfits with you. If you don’t feel like cleaning because you’re in a bad state, he’ll gladly clean up everything for you. Be always compliments you. He definitely has an act of service love language or just sarcasm as his love language. Akaashi is the type of guy that would ask you to let him attempt doing your makeup. Akaashi Keiji is definitely a romantic. He has an amazing style of clothes. He may not look it but he’d be protective over you. He definitely has stage fright. He’d have an amazing playlist. Akaashi is probably really good with claw machines, it’s a talent he has. He seems like the type of guy that likes the rain. Akaashi Keiji has the sweetest and warmest smile you’ve seen.
This is the type of guy I think Akaashi Keiji is :)

Prince in the Storm: Chapter Sixteen
Tumblr media
Summary: Contrary to popular belief, Virgil was sensitive. Most people saw him as some “spooky, broody dude”, when in reality he was just a private person. Teachers tried to open his mind up with a figurative crowbar. Everyone tried to get him to open up. Well, everyone except his best friend Talyn. They were the only one who understood his personality and inner workings just enough to be his friend. However, they haven’t seen his Marking. No one other than his parents have. Contrary to popular belief, Roman was sensitive. Most people saw him as a fanciful, dreamy, somewhat egotistical thespian who wanted nothing but to be the best of the best. Everyone cheered him on in his performances. Everyone praised his original works. Anything he made others enjoyed. People would whisper about his Marking, wondering where it was and when he would reveal it. He had a whole circle of friends, yet no one except his best friend Joan understood him. Joan was the only one who saw Roman’s insecurities. As students of Kingston High School, with zany principals and try-hard superintendents, it is up to Virgil and Roman to stay alive enough to fulfill their destiny. Ao3

Roman woke up with his head at the foot of his bed, hugging his pillow, and his notebook open on the floor. He didn't remember falling asleep. He didn't remember dreaming. He definitely didn’t remember why he had drool stuck to his cheek. He rolled over to shut off his alarm on his nightstand. That's when it dawned on him.
He didn't remember dreaming.
He shot upwards. His heart was pounding. Was this a sign? Were he and Virgil on the right path? He hadn't believed that mumbo jumbo about Soulmate Magic and dreams when Joan told him in the beginning of the school year. When Roman talked about his weird nightmare that Virgil had started to play a small role in. Was that only 6 weeks ago?
But why would they stop when he finally felt comfortable around Virgil? What did it all mean? He really needed to ask Joan for those articles again. Maybe they weren’t mystical mumbo jumbo after all. He should have been paying more attention to them when he was obsessing over the nightmares in the beginning of the school year. After all, internet articles weren’t always unreliable sources, right?
Roman sat at his vanity mirror. His reflection had changed from what he’d been seeing for the past two weeks. He looked brighter. It was like the depressive haze since their first kiss was thinning. He could see the light at the end of the tunnel. His eyes looked crinkled from the wide smile on his face as he gazed into his reflection’s eyes.
Humming a tune from Tangled, Roman combed through his hair. Linda didn't seem up to her usual antics. That rebellious strand of hair was actually laying down with the rest of his hairdo.
He looked...good. Not quite like his old self. This confidence was  more...genuine. Happiness looked good on him. Is this what other people saw in him when he walked through the halls? A young man who just radiated the energy of sunny attraction? Or was this a new sight in general? Was he seeing himself clearly, or for the first time?
His hair was caught in a beam of early morning sunlight, bringing out the strands of gold and red that only appeared in the purest of lighting. He resisted the urge to blink as he inspected his eyes. Had the golden brown always been so rich? Was the sun just in a good spot in the sky shining through his window, or was he finally seeing himself the way he’s wanted to since he was a child?
Closing his eyes, Roman took in a deep inhale through his nose. He tried to  remember that stormy night when Patton spoke with an anxious Virgil. Smell the rose?
He opened his eyes on the exhale. The morning so far tasted sweet to him. A beginning. A fresh start.
With bold proclamation, he recited his affirmations to his reflection. He sang
them to the tune he’d been using since he first came up with them in the eighth grade.
“ I am pretty
I am a star
I am an artist
I am perfect
I am a prince ”
When he had first written those affirmations down, Joan teased him because he used ‘Prince’ instead of ‘King’, like his last name. Roman explained it to them as best as he could. Princes were at the beginning of their journeys. Princes got to perform, they got to explore. He told Joan all those years ago that he’d change it to King when he was older and had enough life experiences under his belt. Or when he was ready to settle down with his true love.
Roman sighed as he remembered that day while getting dressed. He wondered if Joan actually did understand, or if they had just nodded to get him to shut up.
No, that wasn’t true. Joan was the only person who understood him. Even though by now Joan had probably forgotten about the affirmations. They didn't know he still did them five years later. It wasn’t something that really had a place in everyday conversation.
Half an hour later, Roman was pulling up to the student parking lot earlier than usual. That’s what happens when one gets decent sleep , he supposed. There were a few students milling about. The air was getting crisper. The summer humidity had changed to a fall humidity (the difference only noticeable to a long time resident of Parkwill, of course). Roman was glad he had decided to leave his jacket at home. Any rain that came wouldn’t be too bad. It would probably be more misty than anything.
He made his way to his first class on the second floor, English with an old man named Mr. Richardson. He needed to ask for an extension on his essay. He had been ignoring most of his homework in his depression since Virgil kissed him. He wondered how he’d be feeling after their date. Would he be in such a joyous high that he’d continue to ignore his studies? It was a worry for him. His deal with his parents was good grades as a trade for continuing theater. Briefly he considered even telling his mom that he had a date tonight.
Roman paused in the doorway of the classroom as the realization hit him. He was going on a date. A date! He was going to be taking Virgil on a date. That Virgil initiated! Virgil, distant Virgil, handsome Virgil, with a mouth that tasted like the heat of a summer bonfire and lips that felt like plug outlets.
Roman felt tears prick at his vision. Happy ones. Virgil had asked him on a date. Did this mean they were ready to move forward? No more nightmares?
No, he wouldn’t get his hopes up yet. He needed to go slowly. He had always planned from the beginning that his soulmate would be the one to reveal himself, or Roman would after he was done with his travels. When he was ready to settle down. Also, just because Virgil wanted to go on a date, it didn't mean they were ready to jump into the thick of it. Roman needed to be patient.
Patience is a virtue, but I’m not a freaking nun or anything, Roman thought  as he walked down the hallway.
Roman walked into the room with a strange feeling of electricity dancing over his arms. He looked at the desk his English teacher usually sat in during the morning. Instead of Mr. Richardson, though, there was his favorite teacher and a man he had only seen twice before, but had never been introduced to.
“Oh, Roman, you’re a bit early, aren’t you?” Mr. D asked. What was that look on his face? He was...smiling. He only did that when he was looking forward to something special.
“Uh, yeah, I got decent sleep.” Roman was eyeing the two men. He couldn’t help but feel off-kilter as the sparks continued shooting up his arms.
“Good, good.” The drama teacher patted Roman’s shoulder absently. “By the way, no rehearsal tonight. We all need a night to relax and regroup, right?”
Roman nodded. He knew that the teacher was implying something, but he didn’t know what it was exactly until he spoke up.
“Wow, Princey, you always look this good?” a gruff voice called from the back of the classroom.
That explained the weird feeling in his arms. “Oh, hi, Virgil!” He ran his hand on the back of his head, which most likely would wake Linda from her slumber. “Sorry I didn’t see you there...in the shadows.”
Virgil rolled his eyes as he walked forward. “Whatever, I’ll see you later.”
Then he did something Roman didn’t expect. Virgil embraced him, not even minding the awkwardness of the backpacks they both wore, and then kissed his cheek.
“See you at lunch, Roman.” Virgil winked at him before he left.
Roman was frozen from the weird pain/not pain feeling in his abdomen. He jumped at the sound of Mr. D chuckling.
“That’s the action I want to see from you when we get back to rehearsals. Pull on that feeling okay?” The theater teacher pat Roman on the shoulder again as he walked out.
Roman stared at the superintendent, who was grinning like he had just won a goldfish- or a freaking puppy-at the fairgrounds. What was that all about? Virgil must be scheming something, and the superintendent looks like he’s expecting something from me.
Roman did what he did best, he played it off cool before he died of stage fright.
“How rude of him not to introduce me to you, I’m Roman. Roman King.” Roman stuck his hand out politely. He hid his relief that the buzzing had stopped vibrating on his skin.
“Yes, of course, my nephew hasn’t always had the best manners.” The man shook Roman’s hand. “But that’s why you like him, isn’t it?”
Roman let out one of his ‘Noble Noises’, a name that Joan gave to the sounds he couldn’t help but let out when he was at a loss for words.
“Wh- I- ha-”
“Relax, Roman.” Thomas chuckled. “Mr. Richardson is going to be out for the week. Due to the lack of-” he clenched his jaw- “stability in this school, Principal Duke hasn’t set up any substitute teachers to be on our call list. I could have had other teachers work on their off periods to cover the class, but I have free time.”
“Isn’t being a substitute a bit below your paygrade?” Roman asked without thinking.
“I was a sub before I was anything else.” Thomas held his arm out to direct Roman to take his seat.
A group of students wandered in as the bell rang. Mr. Sanders smiled warmly at Roman. A bit too nice, as if he knew a big secret.
Jeesh, was Roman getting too paranoid for his own good? Or was he getting his hopes up?
Roman made his way to his desk, excited to see how the Superintendent of the entire district would teach. He knew that Mr. Sanders was taking the fall semester to exclusively monitor how Kingston High was improving, but he didn’t know that he’d be this involved. His reputation for caring about education seemed to hold more truth to it than Roman thought. Hopefully it meant that he'd leave the drama department alone.
The second bell rang. Mr. Sanders walked up in front of the whiteboard to write down his name. Not that he needed to, he did just introduce himself to the entire school just a short time ago.
Roman pulled out his English notebook. He was sure that Mr. Sanders would make them continue their assignments. Mr. Richardson had them working on learning about the various types of essay formats. The unit was difficult, especially since he wanted them to do three different essays in different formats as a way to show how well they understood.
Mr. Sanders’ demeanor had changed now that he was in front of the classroom. Roman recognized that shift. It was the type of body stance that actors took right before getting into character. The tension in his stance to fend off the stage fright.
“Hello class,” Mr.  Sanders greeted. He sounded like a car salesman rather than a substitute teacher. “Mr. Richardson will be out for a week. I will be your teacher while he is gone.”
He turned on his heel to the whiteboard. He wrote out a phrase on the whiteboard:
“Soulmate Magic: Myth or Fact?”
Roman felt himself about to choke on his own spit. He hated the Universe sometimes. He had just been wondering about that this morning.
“Who here believes in Soulmate Magic?” Mr. Sanders asked the class while he drew out a chart of some sort on the whiteboard.
Roman felt his arm lift up without his permission. He hurriedly looked around the rest of the classroom. There were a few students also looking around with their hands in the air too. One guy in the back of the class was chuckling to himself.
“Mr. Flannigan, what’s so funny?” Mr. Sanders asked as he turned around.
The boy shrugged, causing his bulky headphones to shift on his leather jacket. “This is English class in high school ,” he emphasized with a sneer. “You can’t expect us to believe that fairytale bullshit.”
Roman and the others had put their arms down by then. If he had been asked this before meeting Virgil, he would have been on the fence. However, since the first day of school there were just too many coincidences and feelings and experiences he had noticed. After all, he did start believing the Dream Theory enough to go with Virgil to his house when they had barely known each other...and also kiss him that next morning.
Mr. Sanders didn’t even acknowledge the cuss word from the bold student. He looked amused. “I take it the rest of you feel this way too?”
The class all seemed to  shift uncomfortably. Gabrielle, the girl who sat behind Roman, spoke up first. “It’s not that I think it’s bull, it just feels like something we say to kids.”
“Oh? Then do you know why Markings exist?” The Superintendent looked like he was holding information no one else had. Roman had a heavy feeling in his stomach at that look. His smirk was an older version of Virgil’s.
Gabrielle frowned. “No one does. They’ve been around forever. They’re just...something that’s natural.”
“Would you be willing to argue that point as passionately as Mr. Flannigan in the back?” Mr. Sanders asked.
Gabrielle blushed and looked down at her desk as a few kids snickered. “Well, maybe, I don’t know.”
Mr. Sanders went back to the whiteboard and labeled the columns he had drawn out. On the left he had written “Myth”. On the other side he had written “Fact”. Underneath “Fact” he started writing the names of some of the students who had their hands raised earlier. Roman felt sweat start to form on his forehead as his name was written in the “Fact” section.
As he wrote, Mr. Sanders spoke. “Your teacher was doing a unit on the different types of essays in academia. I’m sure you’re all familiar with the traditional thesis statement. For the first half next week you’ll be spending class time working in groups on finding research online supporting your side of the argument. We’ll spend one day in the school library looking for books as sources too. Then the second half of the week you’ll each write your own essay about why you think Soulmate Magic is or isn’t real.”
Roman sighed. Could he use personal experience as his only source?
Mr. Sanders had finished writing their names on the board. He uncapped a pink marker. He looked behind him at the class and asked. “Who here has met their soulmate yet?”
Roman gulped. He didn’t want to jump the gun. There was still a chance he was being set up for disappointment despite the other ‘signs’. Maybe this project would help him find the truth-or as close as he can get-about what the hell was going on with Virgil without actually talking about it. Obviously he'd need better sources than Buzzfeed's 'Six Signs You've Found Your Soulmate' article he had seen floating around.
Mr. Sanders put a pink asterisk next to the names of the students who had found their soulmates. There were a few on each side of the chart. Roman felt a lump in his throat. There were more people who found their soulmates while young than he had thought. That didn't help with the whole "not getting his hopes up about his career" thing.
They spent the rest of the class being assigned to their study groups. They were sorted into groups of four. Roman was assigned to work with Marissa Falcon, Andrew Harrison, and Mercy Fenton. They had changed their seating to make sure they were all sitting together. They had moved their desks to face each other close to the door.
Marissa was definitely excited about this project. Her tight red curls bounced around her face even when she was still. She was one of the students with a pink asterisk next to her name on the board. The only one in their group, actually. Meaning that she had already found her soulmate.
“So, putting aside the weirdness of the superintendent of the entire school district being here, can we just talk about how cool it is to learn about this?! Much better than what the old man was doing.” Her voice reminded Roman of bubblegum and the color pink. She was excitable, bright, and definitely had the glow of someone who considered herself an expert.
Roman was just glad he wouldn’t have to take the lead on the project. Maybe working with someone his age who had already found their soulmate would help him out with his personal life as well as give him an edge on his essay. The other two in the group barely participated in the rest of the conversation. He got the feeling that Marissa and he were the ones who were going to take the assignment seriously.
It was too soon that the bell rang for his next class. Disappointed, Roman packed his backpack. He waved goodbye to the substitute. Mr. Sanders gave him a smile in return as he pulled aside Gary Flannigan. Probably to talk to him about the cussing earlier in class.
Roman went to his next class. Thinking to himself, I hope this is a sign I’m on the right path with Virgil .
-------
“Jeez, Talyn, don’t tug my hair so hard!” Virgil griped. He was trying not to flinch as Talyn precariously combed the dye through his hair.
“Well, do you want me to be thorough or no?” They responded tersely. They were trying - unsuccessfully - to hide their smile at Virgil’s pain and suffering.
“Remind me to never let you dye my hair in a bad mood, Talyn” Joan snarked as they read a book at Virgil’s desk. The Chrome Borne was the title that Virgil caught.
It was weird, Virgil admitted to himself, to have his maybe-boyfriend’s best friend hanging out with him without Roman being there. Not bad, just weird. It made Virgil a little annoyed that he couldn’t have one on one time with Talyn as much anymore. Still, Joan was fun to have around. They were able to keep Talyn from smacking Virgil upside the head quite a few times.
“Don’t make me flick some of this on your stupid face,” Talyn muttered so only Virgil could hear.
“Why are you being so rough with my precious head? I don’t need a concussion on my first real date, Tal.” Virgil winced as Talyn purposefully tugged on his bangs.
“You can’t get a concussion from hair pulling, smartass.” Talyn responded sweetly. “Besides, maybe next time you’ll give me more time to prepare to do this. I know I’m magic but I’m no miracle worker.”
“Not my fault I’ve been busy!” he whined. “You don’t want me to fail classes do you?”
Talyn huffed as they clipped up the section they had finished. Their movements were more gentle now. “No. You need all the help you can get.”
“What does hair dye have to do with failing classes?” Joan asked. They set down their book and spun in the desk chair to face Virgil.
“Virgie has finally decided to take school seriously. So he’s gotta learn how to do homework for the first time.” Talyn was starting to trail off as they poured their focus where it should have been - making sure Virgil’s hair dye wasn’t fucked up.
He rolled his eyes. “What they mean to say is that Mr. Charles has been helping me after school twice a week to get my homework done. I’m in a stupid deal for the first half of the semester to actually try to be a good student.”
Joan’s eyebrows raised. “Never took you for a hard worker, no offense.”
“None taken, neither did I.” Virgil grinned. “Hey, can I ask you something?”
Joan made a show of rolling their eyes and groaning. “How dare you burden me with trying to find answers to the universe?” They put their wrist against their forehead and leaned over the side of the spinning chair. “It’s so hard being an oracle. Haven’t you heard of google?”
Virgil and Talyn snickered. “I see where Princey gets his theatrics,” he remarked.
Joan immediately shot up, leaning their elbows on their knees and looking at Virgil with mighty curiosity. “Why do you call him Princey? His name is King.”
Virgil shrugged impulsively, causing Talyn to flick him for moving. “I dunno. It slipped out one day and kinda stuck.” There was more to it than that, but there was no way he was going to give that information to Roman’s right hand.
“It’s just kinda funny to me,” Joan’s eyes looked lost in thought, “That you’d choose a nickname for him based off of his affirmations.”
“Roman does affirmations?” Virgil asked, surprised. “Isn’t that for people who don’t like themselves or something?”
Joan frowned at Virgil, and in a reprimanding tone said, “Not necessarily. Sometimes people do it to control how they view themselves. Sometimes it’s to remind them of their goals.” Joan sounded sad when they added softly, “Besides...Roman doesn’t exactly have a very high view of himself. He probably doesn't even know that I remember he made affirmations all those years ago."
Virgil snorted. “The guy’s got an ego the size of the Chrysler Building.”
Talyn paused their work and shared a look with Joan. Joan shifted in the seat, looking down. Their voice a near whisper, “Not really. He’s just a good actor, ya know?”
Oh.
“I get it now,” Virgil looked down as Talyn pushed his head forward. “He did seem really...hollow...after something-”
“I know what happened, Virge, you don’t need to go into it.” Joan didn’t sound like they had fake disinterest. They truly weren’t digging for information and wanted to respect Virgil’s privacy.
Remembering that fuck-up was hard for Virgil. It was still so fresh in his mind. “No, it’s okay, I want you to know my side.”
He didn’t wait for an acknowledgement. He told Joan about Roman meeting him on the bus, their walk home, the panic attack, the family dinner, Roman spending the night, the morning, the kiss, him running away, and the talk with Uncle Thomas.
Joan helped fill in some blanks for him, too. He heard about how Roman had been so distraught when he visited their house right after. Joan mentioned something about a song, which led into the trio getting sidetracked into Joan’s history of creating with Roman. It was nice hearing stories about Theater Camp. Hearing about Roman’s softer side was way better than hearing constant praise from people who barely knew him.
“So, what was your original question?” Talyn nudged while they put the shower cap on Virgil’s head.
Virgil thought for a moment. What was the question he had?
“Oh! Right! Hey Joan,” Virgil reached for his phone in the pocket from his jeans. “Could you tell me if Roman would like this surprise idea that I have?”
Joan took the phone that they were handed. Their face slowly grew more mischievous and they were laughing a creepy, sinister laugh by the time they were done with it. “Yes, yes he will love this.”
“Really?” Virgil asked as he stood up to stretch his legs. “I hope he’ll understand what I’m trying to say.”
Joan bit their lip in thought. Talyn sat on their lap in the small rolling chair, which creaked under the weight of them. Virgil just sat on his bed while waiting for their response.
“I think,” Joan started in a more serious tone, “that it’s a sweet idea. He’s always said that he didn’t want to know his soulmate before he was ready with an established career.
“But I don’t know, he’s changed a lot in the past two months. He may not be willing to commit to it no matter what you say. He’s been down pretty bad, Virge.” Joan started rubbing their finger up and down Talyn’s forearm while swaying back and forth. “I say, go for it. You’ve got most of it all planned out. I will say that if you go through with this, maybe prepare yourself for him to not be understanding of what you’re asking for. Because it is a lot.”
Virgil nodded slowly. “I’ll see how the date goes tonight. I don’t really wanna jump the gun, you know?”
Talyn got up to sit next to Virgil and rub his shoulder. “Your date is going to go fine. You already know he’s in love with you. You’ve just gotta clear the air on some things. This is a time for honesty.”
“And really, this surprise you’ve planned out, Virgil?” Joan giggled. “I’m gonna do everything I can to make sure this happens.”
“Yeah, watching you two dance around each other is better than any soap opera.” Talyn agreed.
The trio talked for a bit more before the timer on Talyn’s phone went off for Virgil to rinse out his hair. He rushed to the shower so he could be ready on time for his date.
Virgil was in the shower rinsing his hair when it hit him. Roman would be going on a date with him. It wouldn’t be just a normal date, though, but a chance for Virgil to be vulnerable about everything. He needed to come clean about his side of what happened. Especially hearing about how Roman was so empty after that first kiss.
The water was cold, which normally didn’t bother Virgil, but he found himself shivering at the thought of hurting Roman again. Was he ready to try? What if he was just doing this to make himself feel better? What if, when he explained himself, Roman thought he was toxic? What if Roman just couldn’t be with someone who won’t reveal their Marking? What if he fucked up again ? What if he can't open up after all?
Once the water was running clear in the tub, Virgil stepped out to dry his hair off with his “Trash Towel”. It’s the towel he used when his hair was freshly dyed. He didn’t want to ruin a bunch of different ones with leaky hair. This was a white towel with stains of all the different hair colors he had done over time. He probably should have replaced it long ago, but that meant ruining another towel again.
The sound of the hair dryer wasn’t enough to drown out his thoughts. His fingers felt numb as he worked on his hair. Once that was done he returned to his room to get dressed. Talyn and Joan were downstairs. It sounded like his dad was home and talking to them. That was good. He needed some time to gather himself for what he was about to do.
He didn’t want to look like he was trying too hard, but he didn’t want to look like he didn’t care either. He wondered if Roman would be dressed up all fancy for their first date. No doubt the boy was at his house fretting over what he’d wear. That image of Roman freaking out over what he’d be wearing comforted Virgil a bit.
Virgil was glad that Mr. D had agreed to cancel the club meeting for that night. He was a weird teacher. He kept his distance but it was obvious he cared deeply about his students, especially Roman. The few times Virgil talked to the mysterious teacher, he always held a fond sparkle in his eye when Roman came up in conversation. It was really cool of him to give special treatment, and as Virgil changed he figured that Roman must be really special to his teacher. Which was good, considering that he needed Mr. D’s help with his surprise later on if his date went well.
After Virgil was mostly satisfied with his appearance, he went downstairs to see that it wasn’t just his dad who was home.
Logan was sitting on his couch, with his arm over Patton’s shoulders. Patton leaned into Logan like he was relaxing after a long day. They were talking to Joan and Talyn. The four of them were laughing at something his dad must have said. Virgil felt his chest start to warm. It was such a natural sight, except for the empty loveseat in the corner. It was easy to see himself laughing along with them, with Roman’s head on his lap as they talked.
Hope swelled within him. Could it be that he could make this work? Maybe he wasn’t going to fuck up after all.
He walked into the room. His dad saw him and stood up to meet him. “You look so handsome, kiddo!" he squealed. The pride was so evident on his face. “My baby’s first date! So exciting.”
Virgil pretended to frown. “C’moooon dad. Don’t embarrass me in front of my friends.” He tried to not laugh.
Talyn stood up, playing along by stomping their feet. “Young man, I worked way too hard to make your hair perfect. The least you could do is let your dad take pictures of my masterpiece.”
Virgil lost his composure by then. Talyn calling him ‘young man’ was just the cherry on top. “Sure, go ahead!” he called out through his hysterical laughter.
Logan spoke up, nervously grinning. “I have my camera in my car. It would produce a better quality for pictures than our phones.”
“Need some help?” Joan asked excitedly. They didn’t wait for an answer as they made their way to the door. Logan just chuckled to himself as he left after the excited teenager.
“Talyn, don’t tell me your soulmate is a photography nerd! You hate taking pictures of yourself.” Virgil teased.
“Shut up,” Talyn grumbled, though their grin was noticeable. “Joan’s only got a passing interest in it. They haven’t asked me to be their muse or anything.”
Patton chuckled. “Trust me, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Artists are very serious about their work.”
“Dad, have you been modeling on the side?” Virgil asked. He wasn't teasing, but genuinely curious. That hadn't talked bunch about Logan or the galaxy tattoo since that fight.
Logan had walked back in by then and made his way to Patton. “Your father has a very symmetrical face, and when he smiles I want to keep it with me forever.” He kissed Patton’s suddenly red cheek.
Virgil noticed the way his dad stiffened as he waited for Virgil to react. It was weird to see another man lovingly touch his dad. He faked a reassuring smile to the pair. He didn’t want to think about the prickling in the back of his head. He needed to get used to Logan being around in a more casual manner. He'd have to get used to the fact that Logan was here to stay.
He made sure to put all of his focus into watching Talyn and Joan from there on out. He tried not to blink when the camera flashed in his eyes. He fought within himself to keep that earlier hopeful feeling from flying away from him. He wouldn’t let his pessimism win.
This night was about coming clean. It was about asking for forgiveness, giving context, and taking his next step to be a better man. It was about searching for compromise in good faith. It was for finding faith in the opportunity for fresh starts. After tonight, he’d be able to see a brighter future for himself.
It was when they were still taking pictures that there was a knock at the front door. Talyn let out a squeal that seemed out of character. Virgil raised his eyebrow at them, which welcomed another click, flash! from the camera. He walked away from the staircase to open the door.
His forearms felt like he was being pricked by static shocks all over when he saw Roman standing there, the beginning sunset behind him looking like something out of a movie. Virgil was speechless. He couldn’t think of anything flirty or sarcastic to say. Had it only been at lunch period that day he last saw Roman? He looked like royalty.
Roman had his hair combed back. It was a bit longer since he hadn’t gotten it cut, so his hair had some flow to it. He had worn a long sleeve button up with black slacks. The shirt was a deep red color, bringing out the hazel eyes and white teeth. He was wearing a small bit of brown eyeliner and mascara, nothing obvious, but enough to bring out the features of his face. The rosey blush that Virgil loved so much was starting to form the longer he stared.
“Um, I didn’t know where we were going, so I figured I’d make myself look nice.” Roman looked Virgil up and down. “I’m glad to know we had the same idea.”
Virgil looked down at what he was wearing. He had chosen his only pair of slacks -a gray pair that his grandmother got him for his birthday - and a deep wine-purple button up. He had chosen a dark gray necktie with black stitching to look like spiderwebs. Just to keep a little bit of his dark personality obvious so he wouldn’t feel completely out of his depth.
“Oh, right, yeah.” He responded lamely. His voice cracked and he felt like he wanted to shrivel up in embarrassment.
“I got you this. I hope it’s not too cliché or tacky for you.” Roman handed Virgil a single black rose. It was plastic, and the stem was dark purple with glitter. It was definitely something cheesy, but Virgil smiled anyway.
“Thank you, Roman, I love it.” Virgil heard his dad clear his throat loudly. He rolled his eyes. Feeling more normal now that his bubble with Roman had burst, he swept his arm behind him. “Come in. We’re just taking pictures as if it’s fucking prom or something.”
Roman laughed at that. “I’ll never say no to a photo op!”
Joan and Talyn gave hugs to Roman when he was in the room. “Looking as royal as ever, your highness.” Joan remarked.
"Wait, isn't Highness for a prince?" Virgil asked. "I always call him Majesty."
Roman chuckled. "Majesty and Highness can be either, depending on the situation. Majesty is more formal, and Highness is a sort of catch-all."
Virgil didn't have a good response to that. He didn't know anything about royalty and all that fancy shit. He was itching to go, but automatically he pulled Roman by his waist. "Let's get our pictures done quickly, I'm starving."
Roman and Virgil took a few pictures at the bottom of the staircase. Roman didn’t seem bothered by the blinding flashes. Virgil kept his arm tight against his date’s waist. After he felt he was thoroughly blinded, he ended the photo session. “Alright, if I want to be able to see Roman’s sexy face I need the flashes to stop.”
Roman whined behind him as he made his way to his jacket by the door. “But I wanna make sure all of my sides have been captured…”
Virgil just ignored him. In a rush to leave, he gave hugs to everyone except Logan, and walked out the door while Roman gushed his thanks to Logan for taking pictures.
The pair settled into their seats in Roman’s car. The silence was nice as Virgil adjusted to it after the noise of the living room. He looked at Roman nervously. He seemed relaxed. His handsomeness seemed never-ending. “Alright, Captain Cranky, you ready to go get some fancy food?” he quipped, too giddy for Virgil's own good.
Virgil rolled his eyes and huffed. “Only the best for you, your Majesty .”
Roman chuckled. They pulled out of the driveway as Virgil plugged in the aux cord to his phone as if he had done it every day.
By the time they arrived at Marina's, Virgil had educated Roman with every song on the Welcome to the Black Parade album. They got out of the car laughing as Roman gave the keys to the valet.
With a warm blanket of joy between the two, they entered the restaurant to start the first part of their date. Virgil tried not to think about the nerves bundling up in his abdomen, or even consider the coincidence that his Marking was warmer than usual.

You keep on saying you'll be mine for a while
You're looking fancy, and I like your style
You drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy
You keep on shouting, you keep on shouting
I wanna rock and roll all night and party every day
~ Kiss - Rock And Roll All Nite ~
Despite it being her third tour with Equinox now, Lizzie would probably never stop being amazed at the incredible machinery that stood behind every single one of their shows.
Now, two weeks after they had started out in London, their route had seen them through Bristol and on to Birmingham. All the familiar routines had established themselves again as if they hadn’t spent a whole month apart at all. Like cogs in a well tuned machine, everyone was working together in well established patterns to make each show unforgettable for those who came to see them play.
It didn’t matter whether one was part of the tech crew, the management, security or the band themselves; they were all like a big, chaotic but loveable family. Of course, Lizzie couldn’t deny that this time around there was considerably more tension to be felt backstage than she was used to, but fights were something happening even in the best of families; at least, that’s what she was telling herself.
Their soundcheck being over, Lizzie had just left the stage with Skye, waiting for the others to catch up. Even though the roof of the arena they were playing in tonight was still closed, Lizzie could feel a bead of sweat running down her spine.
It had been uncharacteristically hot for weeks now, very unusual for a British summer. Not that she was complaining, Lizzie typically loved everything about the hot weather; but the dampness that it brought with it made it almost unbearable to move, setting everyone’s nerves on edge. Hopefully it would just rain soon and be done with it; there was nothing better to clear the air than a good summer storm.
At least for them, however, the heat of the sun would soon be replaced by the spotlights burning down on them. Even after so many years of playing on stages of every size and format, Lizzie had trouble fighting the nervous feeling spreading from her stomach through her body. She was always the first one to enter the stage, the beat of her drums building up the mood until one after the other of her friends would enter and add their own instruments to the sound. As soon as she started playing she was in her element, every flare of nerves forgotten; but until then, she was stuck feeling like in free fall.
Lizzie reached into the pocket of her shorts, her fingers finding the familiar shape of the red plectrum she was always carrying with her. It had belonged to Orion before it had found its way into her possession; it was one of the plectrums he had used on the first tour they had ever played. Without thinking about it, she drew it out and let it wander through her fingers, a fun little trick Orion had taught her to help channel her focus when her stage fright was setting in.
“What’s that you got there, little rockstar?”
Charlie had finished his work on Merula’s keyboard and joined them at the stage entrance. Lizzie hadn’t noticed him approaching and jumped when he spoke, dropping the plectrum to the ground. Before she could pick it up again, Skye had gotten hold of it, turning it around between her fingers with a confused look.
“That looks familiar,” she mused, examining the colourful piece of plastic. “Is that one of our old plectrums?”
Lizzie tried snatching it from her hands but Skye quickly moved it out of her reach.
“No, it’s not, it’s just a lucky charm.”
She could tell Skye didn’t buy her explanation. “Why would you have one of these?”
Lizzie scowled at her friend as she tried in vain to reach Skye’s hand. “None of your business, Parkin. Give it back.”
Skye made an indignant sound as Charlie jumped to Lizzie’s aid; playing out his advantage in height, he unceremoniously plucked the plectrum from Skye’s fingers and handed it back to Lizzie with a wink. Giving him a grateful look, she let it disappear in the depths of her pockets.
“You’re a real spoilsport, Weasley,” Skye snorted.
“And you’re a nuisance,” Lizzie said in Charlie’s stead.
Charlie shook his head. “Hearing you two talk, I might just believe the rumours about your relationship.”
“I do have standards, you know,” Lizzie rolled her eyes, chuckling at Skye’s sound of protest.
Lizzie’s attention was drawn away from their bickering when she saw Orion and Everett were still standing on stage, engaged in a heated discussion. She stifled a sigh; Everett was still at odds with Orion’s decision to perform the new songs himself. There wasn’t one day he would spare them his complaints. Although Everett had always been a person with a temper, Lizzie couldn’t remember him ever being angry at one of them for so long.
Orion, however, wasn’t responding to Everett’s aggressive demeanour. Ever the calm and collected person, it took a lot more for him to lose his centre; Lizzie wasn’t sure she’d ever seen him anything but level-headed at all. And sure enough, even when Everett left him standing with a dismissive gesture, he only looked after him with a tired expression.
In contrast, Everett’s face was clearly showing his annoyance. He tried to hide it behind his usual sneer when he saw them looking, but the way his shoulders were tensed was speaking volumes. His posture only changed when he walked past where Artemis was still working on her explosives. She was bent deeply over the igniter she was wiring, so concentrated on her task she didn’t even notice Everett coming up behind her.
“A little lower, sweetheart. If you have to mess with our pyros, you might as well give us a proper show.”
Artemis straightened up with a face like thunder. “Go fuck yourself.”
Everett shrugged. “I don’t need to, I have plenty of people willing to do that for me. I can bump you up the queue if you like?”
Rolling her eyes, Artemis gathered up her things and moved to the other side of the stage, as far away from all of them as possible.
“Why can’t he just shut up for a second,” Charlie growled as they watched Everett strut off with a self-satisfied smirk. “I’m making no progress with her whatsoever. I’m still trying to convince her that we’re not all dickheads. Ev’s attitude is definitely not helping.
“Is it still so bad with her?” Lizzie wanted to know.
“Yeah,” Charlie admitted, “I don’t know how to get through to her. She’s a tough nut, that one.”
“Tell me about it,” Lizzie said. “I’ve never met anyone so determined to not be nice to anyone.”
“Surprised there’s people out there not wanting to be your friend?” Merula scoffed as she joined them.
“Actually, I am,” Lizzie said. “I even managed to convince you to be my friend, after all.”
“If you want to call us friends,” Merula snorted, but Lizzie knew she was teasing her.
She chuckled and turned to Charlie. “Do you have any idea why she’s so frosty?”
Charlie shrugged, looking as clueless as they came. “If only I knew. She’s giving me no chance to find out either, as soon as the work’s done, she’s off.”
“Sounds like she needs to get a few drinks in to loosen up,” Skye said. “Probably much easier to handle her then.”
Charlie looked at her incredulously. “You do realise how creepy that sounds, right?”
“Don’t be stupid, you know what I mean,” Skye rolled her eyes, “but seriously, who says no to a free drink and some good company?”
Charlie watched Artemis work her way through the remaining igniters. He didn’t seem convinced by Skye’s suggestion but shrugged anyway. “Might as well give it a shot at this point, but if she bites me, I’ll hold you accountable.”
***
Just like the weather forecast had promised, the temperatures hadn’t dropped one bit until it was time to enter the stage. And even if a cooling breeze would be blowing outside, it would stand no chance of reaching the fired up masses filling up the arena.
Lizzie wasn’t sure where it was warmer, down between the thousands of people singing along to their music, or up with them on stage where the heat of the spotlights made her wish for a cold shower.
They were already halfway through the setlist and as always, time seemed to be racing by.
Their fans were fantastic tonight as well; the arena was sold out up to the last seat and the crowd was incredibly enthusiastic. They were reacting to every prompt they were given, whether it was a challenge to cheer louder, sing along or clap to the beat. It was shows like these that reminded Lizzie time and time again that she had the best job in the world.
Everett was giving a stellar performance tonight; he had the whole stadium wrapped around his little finger like only he could, and the fans were cheering him on as he stepped back from the microphone to join the sound of his guitar with the rest of them.
Lizzie turned her head to Orion, who was already waiting for her to give him his cue. She counted down the remaining beats in her head before she gave him a nod. When he turned his attention from her and began playing his solo part, Lizzie couldn’t help but grin. The people were screaming themselves into a frenzy as Orion worked his magic on his guitar.
He never planned what he was going to do beforehand, not one solo the same as the day before. His brow was furrowed in concentration and his lips ever so slightly parted as his fingers flew up and down the neck of the guitar. In moments like these, everything else faded into the background for him; there was nothing left but him and his music.
As Lizzie watched his fingers dance with dizzying speed, her flushed skin burned at the memory of what other magic they were able to do. The thought almost made her miss a beat.
Almost.
She caught herself at the last moment before anyone could notice. She was glad everyone else was too busy to see the blush spreading on her face. But even if they had, they would never have suspected that it didn’t come from the incredibly high temperatures, but something else entirely.
The song ended with a bang, Lizzie hitting two cymbals and the bass drum at the same as KC let all the spotlights flare up. Almost blinded by the brightness flooding the stage, Lizzie closed her eyes and dipped her head back, breathing heavily. For a fraction of a second, the fading sound of the music was still hanging in the air, everyone holding their breaths, before it gave way to the cheers erupting from the crowd.
Lizzie smiled to herself, waiting for her racing heart to slow, before setting her mind onto the rhythm of the next song. The crowd was still cheering and she waited a moment longer until everyone was ready and Orion had stepped behind his own microphone. The next song was one of the unpublished ones and even two weeks after striking their deal with the label, Orion hadn’t let Everett sing one single verse of them.
Lizzie took a deep breath and set the rhythm by hitting her drumsticks against each other a few times. Luckily, it was one of the slower songs so they all had the chance to calm down a little. Orion’s melodic voice carried into the vast space of the stadium over the hushed crowd and Lizzie felt a shiver run down her spine; she had loved this song from the first time Orion had let her hear it.
The crowd seemed to share her opinion; many had taken out their phones and lit the screens, waving them through the darkness in what was looking like a sea of stars. It wasn’t quite the same sight as it had been when lighters had still been allowed in the auditoriums, but Lizzie was loving the sight nonetheless.
All of the new songs they had played so far had been very well received. They made sure to switch them every night so no one got too overexposed, but whatever ones Orion chose, they were always met with great enthusiasm.
The only unrecorded song they were playing night after night was, much to everyone’s surprise, not one of Orion’s creations. Even after Orion had given his consent, Everett hadn’t stopped pestering Ethan until he had agreed to give a few of Everett’s songs a shot. Most of them weren’t nearly as well liked as the ones Orion hadn’t even finished yet, but there was one song that had instantly become so popular with their fans that Ethan had decided to make it a permanent addition to the set list for the rest of the tour.
Everett had revelled in his triumph over Orion; at least that’s how he saw it. And Lizzie had to admit that it really was a catchy melody. But much to Everett’s dismay, whenever Orion picked up his guitar and did what he did best, all eyes were on him, and him alone. He was pouring his heart and soul into the music he played, and people could tell. Like the Pied Piper, he commanded everyone’s attention without even trying to.
That was probably what angered Everett most; the fact that Orion wasn’t even trying.
Even now, Everett was scowling darkly at Orion as he was singing the song in Everett’s stead. Lizzie tried to concentrate on keeping a steady beat, but her eyes were drawn back to their frontman’s menacing expression.
She couldn’t help the feeling that a storm was coming.

Assorted Self Ships: David Warner x Me
🍬Assorted Selfship Asks 🍭
🎨 How would you describe your ship aesthetic? (Include a moodboard if you like!)
I’m new to creating aesthetics but here’s what I made.
Tumblr media
🎁 Have you and your FO(s) given each other any meaningful gifts, material or otherwise? What are they and why are they special?
After learning about crystals recently, David gave me a garnet ring. Garnet is a stone of passionate and undying love, which he knows I love both the stone and power behind it.
📖 Is there a quote/lyric that fits you and your FO(s)?
Shakespeare quotes, because Shakespeare is our love language.
“I do love nothing in the world so well as you. Is not that strange?” - Benedict - Much Ado About Nothing
“I love you with so much of my heart that there is none left to protest!” - Beatrice - Much Ado About Nothing
“Doubt thou the stars are fire, Doubt that the sun doth move, Doubt truth to be a liar, But never doubt I love.” - Hamlet
🐚 What do you do to feel close to each other when you have to be apart?
For me, I think of his smile, and his bright blue eyes. For David, it’s my laughter, my smile, and how I have one blue and one green. But they change with what I wear.
🤗 How do you and your FO(s) express affection for each other? Do you tend to engage in PDA?
DEFINITELY PDA. David loves to hold my hand in public, kiss my cheek, even my neck to make me blush and giggle.
🧗‍♂️ Are you and/or your FO(s) the adventurous types? What kind of adventures do you undergo together?
My idea of an adventure is to go to a staged haunted house. And David loves it because I am so excited and all smiles and squeals, because I am never frightened. I delight in the thrill and surprises.
😚 What was your first kiss with your FO(s) like?  How did you and your FO(s) react?
The first kiss was him using his height to keep one of my drawings from me. I showed it to him and he snatched it, lifting it high above me with a devilish smile. I playfully demand it back, giggling the whole time. I am so close to his face, and he stares at my lips. I hope for what he wants for the drawing, and with flushed cheeks, I get on my toes and peck his lips tentatively. He quickly brings me into his arms and we kiss deeply, a kiss that’s been simmering for months.
🧸 Do you have any items irl that remind you of your FO(s)?
I don’t yet. If I could make a doll of Evil Genius from Time Bandits I would because I know David would love to give me that.
💋 What are the kisses you share typically like? What kind of kisses do you prefer? (eg. ‘good morning’ kiss, ‘i missed you’ kiss, kisses in the rain, etc.)
David loves morning kisses. He loves greeting me with “Good morning, beautiful.” Even though my breath is bad and my hair a mess. He loves it.
📚 How do you spend your free time together? Do you usually go out or do you prefer to stay in?
Definitely stay in. We prefer watching films, going on walks in the park, or just staying at home. He reads while I draw. We also go to Shakespeare plays and theatre in general.
🍯 Do you and your FO (s) use pet names for each other?
I call him ‘bean pole’ and I am ‘acorn’ hehe. Bean pole came out of nowhere for me to call him, but acorn is a reference to Lysander calling Hermia acorn because she is so short hehe. And since I’m much shorter than him, he called me that once and I insisted that be my pet name. Of course when David is approaching 50, I call him Daddy a lot 😏
💕 Would a stranger meeting you and your FO(s) for the first time be able to tell that you’re together? If so, how would they be able to tell?
Probably from the fact we hold hands almost always. Or David has his hand on the small of my back.
🌱 How have you and your FO(s) changed each others’ lives?
David believes in me when I don't. He is always encouraging me in my artwork and self healing. He never stops telling me I can overcome my lack of self worth and confidence.
David has told me I changed his life by being so supportive of his work, whether it be theatre or film. Even when his heart isn't in it and he's feeling more like it's just a paycheck, I tell him he will be wonderful in it no matter what others' think. He knows I always have his support and love no matter what.
🥰 What was the first thing that attracted you to your FO(s)? What was the first thing that attracted them to you? Who fell first?
For me: his eyes, smile, and voice. David said it was my smile and sweet demeanor. I definitely fell first.
⚔ Are you and/or your FO(s) protective? How do they react if you get hurt and vice-versa?
David is very protective, to the point of not wanting me to work the oven because of that one time I scarred my arm with a burn,  bless him. I get protective when David is sick. I get very mother hen over him.
👀 Any spicy headcanons about your FO(s)/your relationship?
David wasn't much into kink until we tried some light bondage on me and spankings. Now he enjoys exploring what both of us like. Huehue
🦒 Is there a height difference between you and your FO(s)? Do you have to make any accommodations because of this?
David is 6” 2’ and I am 5” 4’, so my head comes to his chest. So he always has to lower his head to kiss me or I pull him down. He loves kissing my head at random whenever I am close to him.
😘 Which of you is the tease? Is the seduction a success?
David is DEFINITELY the tease huehue. He's always whispering in my ear words that make me shiver. Or he'll just look at me a certain way across the room that makes me flush and KNOW he wants me to be flustered.
🕯 How would you and your FO(s) pass the time if the power went out?
Reading by candlelight or just talking
💘 How did you and your FO(s) meet? What was your first interaction like? Was it love at first sight or did you take some time to warm up to each other?
We met at a Shakespeare in the park production of the Tempest. The actors came out to greet the guests. David played Caliban, and I was able to tell him how much I loved his performance, saying how Caliban has always been very dear to me. He thanked me and we talked a bit more, and said good bye. I didn't think he was interested and he later confessed he was shy too. But a week later, I saw a production of Midsummer Night's Dream, and there he was again as Lysander. This second meeting, I got bold and gave him my number, never thinking he would call me. He did the next day, and our first date was over coffee.
I was smitten at first sight, and David felt the connection right away but he wasn't sure if I was interested. It didn't take long for us to both adore each other.
🤩 What do you most admire about your FO(s)? What do they admire most about you?
Me for David: his passion for his acting. How despite the onslaught of his stage fright, he pursued film instead. He continued to act in any medium he could and gave it his all.
David admires my willingness not to give in to my depression and my past abuse. How I continue to try and better myself and heal.

Higher than the Big Trees Ch. 48
Tumblr media
amazing moodboard courtesy of @kindaresilient!
read chapter one
read on ao3
Alec looks over as the door to his dressing room opens, smiling as his boyfriend pokes his head in.
“Hey, you,” Magnus says as he kicks the door closed.
“Hey, yourself. How are things out there?”
Setting his drink down on the vanity, Alec hears the tinkling of ice against the glass as Magnus wraps his arms around his neck from behind. Leaning down until their cheeks brush, he turns his head a little so that he can lay a kiss over Alec’s jaw.
“Last I saw, the crowd had started spontaneously singing one of your songs. Chocolate Raspberry, I think?”
Alec smiles a little, just a tilt of his mouth that betrays his endless relief and gratitude. “I always love when they do that.”
“It gave me chills,” Magnus agrees. “Thousands of people singing something you wrote acapella is a little eerie.”
“You never get used to it,” Alec says softly and there’s something there, behind the words, lingering in the undertones so that he’s not surprised when he sees Magnus’s eyes sharpen in the mirror.
“And how are things in here, Alexander?”
Alec doesn’t say anything for a moment, instead taking the time to look at the image the two of them present in the vanity’s mirror. So close they’re touching, Magnus’s hair tickling his ear, his boyfriend wrapped around him with a warmth that makes him shiver.
His mouth upturns slowly until he’s grinning, until his eyes crinkle at the corners in a hint of the laugh lines that will start forming in just a few years.
“We’re pretty damn good, babe.”
He’s gratified to hear Magnus snort out a laugh as his arms tighten around Alec’s neck.
“Well, I’m happy to hear that, darling. I was a little worried.”
Shrugging a little, Alec swivels his chair around until he’s facing Magnus, bringing him in until he’s between spread thighs. With fingers hooked into his belt loops, Alec tugs him closer.
“I’m always a little sentimental before my first show of the tour. It never gets old, you know? Sorry if I worried you.”
Magnus waves that away with a quiet smile. He reaches out a hand, sweeps a thumb over Alec’s cheek before cupping his face. “No need to apologize, I assure you. I’m just happy to see that you don’t appear to suffer from stage fright.”
Alec laughs. “No, I’ve never really been one to get nervous in front of crowds-- and good thing too. I had my meet and greet and soundcheck a couple of hours ago and everyone was friendly and excited. It helped temper any nerves that may have cropped up anyway. No, I was just thinking about the past year-- the past decade since my career took off.”
“Good things I hope?”
“The very best,” Alec assures him. His gaze drops down to the mostly undone buttons of Magnus’s shirt, to the bare skin visible between silk. He raises a brow as he laughs to himself.
“Did you know that I’ve ripped my pants on stage before? And I fell once-- well, twice,” Alec corrects with a grimace. “It was raining and the stage was slick as hell. My ass was bruised for a week.”
“Poor Alec,” Magnus drawls, reaching out with his other hand to rest against his chest. “However did you recover?”
Alec just sends him a droll look. “I laughed it off and hobbled over to the mic stand. I stayed in the same spot pretty much the entire concert. Walking hurt too much.”
“At least it’s sunny today, not a cloud in the sky.”
“Yeah,” Alec agrees. “But that just means it’s a hundred degrees and when the stage lights go up, it’s going to feel like I’m boiling.”
“It is summer in New York, darling.”
Huffing out a laugh, Alec just replies, “Hazards of the job, I suppose.”
Silence falls over them and while Alec can hear the shout of his techs out in the hallway, in his dressing room it’s a goddamn oasis of tranquility. While Alec was always more than willing to help out-- he was a very small piece of the performance, after all, even if he was the most visible-- he was usually left alone before the concert to get ready, relax, have a drink with some friends.
It leaves a lot of room to think.
They’ve been skirting the topic for ages, it seems. It’s been almost two months since his album dropped back in June and Alec had watched as the start date for his tour grew closer and closer with anticipation and dread.
Tonight was a home show in New York to kick off his tour. The first date of over a hundred. The first night in a long line that wouldn’t wrap up for over six months.
As Alec looks up and meets Magnus’s eyes, he sees that knowledge there, the grim reality.
“So,” Alec starts, tongue darting out to run over his bottom lip. “Tonight’s the night, huh?”
Magnus smiles though it doesn’t quite manage to reach his eyes. “It is and I’m so incredibly proud of you.”
Alec relaxes in his seat a little before he reaches up and grabs Magnus’s hands, intertwining their fingers. He squeezes a little before tugging Magnus closer until he gets the hint and straddles him.
Raising their hands up to his lips, he kisses the back of Magnus’s hands. “How are you feeling,” Alec asks and he tenses a little as he waits for an honest answer.
Magnus hums a little and this time when he smiles, it’s real even if it’s a little wan. “While I’m looking forward to seeing you perform, I’ll admit it’s a little bittersweet.”
“Yeah,” Alec breathes, tightening his hands on Magnus’s hips. “It’ll be an adjustment.”
Magnus’s hands go into his hair, careful not to muss too much, as he says, “There’s always texting and face time and who knows,” he teases, “Maybe I’ll even be able to visit you for a few dates during the fall semester.”
“I’m in Amsterdam and Germany during Columbia’s fall break,” Alec replies immediately and his grin turns smug as his boyfriend just stares at him. “What,” he asks coyly. “So I did a little research when I got the finalized itinerary.”
Magnus shakes his head a little, bemused, before tilting his face up with a finger under his chin. He leans down and kisses Alec and he breathes easier at the gesture.
“Well, then,” he says softly. “I’ve always wanted to visit Berlin and the Netherlands.”
He leans down a little more and Alec’s eyes sweep shut as their foreheads touch. They breathe each other in and distantly, Alec knows that he has to start getting ready in earnest for his show but he’s loathe to do anything that will take him away from Magnus. This is the first of three nights in New York City and he wants to steal every second he can with his boyfriend.
It feels like grains of sand, golden and all too fleeting, are falling through his fingers and he knows it's only a few months but that doesn't make the prospect of going weeks and months without being with Magnus any easier. He's trying to hold onto as many grains-- as many seconds and minutes and memories-- as he can before his tour bus rolls out of the city in a few days.
Never enough, he thinks. He could have an eternity with Magnus and it would never be enough.
His nose wrinkles when he feels Magnus brush it with his own, pulling him away from his thoughts. Easing away the tiniest bit, Alec opens his eyes to stare up at his boyfriend.
He sees bright eyes and artfully done makeup. He sees intelligence and wit and so much warmth that it reaches out, wraps around Alec’s bones until he figures he’ll never be cold again.
He sees his life, so much different than it was a few years ago. The tour is bigger, the stakes always higher. The man in front of him is his solace, though, his eye of the storm.
Magnus is everything to Alec and his chest cracks open at the knowledge.
His breath fractures and Alec’s mouth kicks up. “I’ve never done this before, you know.”
Making some noise of confusion, Magnus strokes along the back of Alec’s neck with a raised brow.
“I’m notorious for tour being no strings attached.”
“Yes, I’d heard,” Magnus replies dryly.
Glaring without heat, Alec runs his hands down Magnus’s thighs. “I just want to be sure that you know this is a first for me, too. I have no idea what the hell I’m doing.” Looking up, his smile is small and barely there when he asks, “Just don’t forget about me, okay?”
Magnus is quiet for a moment and Alec sees something shift in his expression, too quick for him to pin down, before it settles into humor. “I’ll make you a deal,” his boyfriend says lowly. “I won’t forget about you as long as you don’t forget about me.”
“Not a chance in hell, Magnus. I couldn’t forget about you if I tried.” His voice drops to a whisper as he adds, “You’re it for me, babe.”
Tension ratchets up, a heady promise. Before their lips can connect-- before they can say another word-- the door to the dressing room is flying open and Lydia’s walking in, phone to her ear as she scowls at the two of them.
Magnus climbs off Alec and he shakes his head, laughing to himself as Alec lets him go but not without sweeping a hand over his ass. Magnus sends him a wry look he pretends not to catch.
Lydia hangs up and shoves her phone in to her pocket before giving both of them a once over. “How are you feeling Alec? It’s forty five minutes to show time.”
Alec’s reply is easy as he answers, “Never been better,” with a surreptitious wink in Magnus’s direction.
It’s Lydia who rolls her eyes but she only maintains her stern look for a few seconds before she eases into a grin. She walks over to him, spins him around until he’s facing the vanity mirror once again. The lights are bright as she slaps her hands on top of his shoulders and meets his eyes through the glass.
“Ready for another go around the block?”
Alec grins. “You know it.”
Lydia laughs, patting his shoulder a few times before stepping back. “Get ready then,” she scolds goodnaturedly. “Simon’s killing it out there and the crowd is definitely ready for you.”
She leaves just a few moments later, waving at Magnus on her way out.
Alec looks up, meets Magnus’s eyes. “What were your plans until the concert started?”
“Why,” Magnus asks, standing from where he’d been relaxing on the couch.
Arching a brow, Alec reaches for the eyeliner. When he waves it, there’s a challenge heating his eyes. “Thought you might want to make yourself useful.”
Magnus laughs as he takes the few strides over to the vanity. He plucks the eyeliner out of Alec’s hand before flicking him on the shoulder. “Oh,” he asks idly. “I thought you had people for that?”
Shrugging a little, Alec nudges Magnus’s shoe with his own as his chair is spun around yet again. “If I feel like makeup, I usually do it. I already have a wardrobe designer on tour. No need for a makeup artist too whenever the most I ever do is, like, eyeliner.”
“Well, then,” Magnus says archly. “Say no more, darling.”
The next few minutes pass silently. Alec’s breath catches in his chest as Magnus leans close, as he follows murmured directions to close his eyes. His breath shudders out and Alec smells the whiskey on Magnus’s breath and he laughs a little, stills almost immediately after hushed orders not to mess up his boyfriend’s work.
Magnus pulls back but Alec still doesn’t open his eyes. Instead, he sighs as he feels Magnus’s hand sweep over a brow and down his cheek.
“Beautiful,” Magnus whispers and when Alec opens his eyes it’s to see his boyfriend leveling him with a stare, intent.
“You’re not so bad yourself,” Alec demurs and then he’s laughing out loud as Magnus harrumphs, as he shoves playfully at his shoulder.
Someone knocks on the door and it’s the costume designer with his outfit for the night. Magnus acknowledges her and then his train of thought’s lost as Magnus pulls him in for a smacking kiss before grabbing the glass he’d left on the vanity and starting toward the door.
Looking over his shoulder, Magnus says, “I’ll let you get changed in peace. See you later.”
Alec nods back and then the costume designer’s closing the door and motioning for Alec to undress while she unzips the garment bag.
Alec rakes a critical gaze over the finished suit and he’s pleased with the result. It was linen and the button down that accompanied it was almost see-through, easily breathable for whenever the stage inevitably grew too warm.
The turquoise tone is warm against his skin and, deciding to take a page out of his boyfriend’s book, Alec leaves a few buttons undone.
After making sure all’s well, the designer leaves and Alec’s left alone. He only has fifteen minutes or so before it’s time to take his place and mic up and Alec breathes deep in the quiet of his dressing room.
Leaning down until he rests flat palms against the counter, Alec leans close to the mirror, stares into his own kohl-rimmed eyes, runs his gaze over a perfect complexion thanks to stage makeup and last night’s face mask.
He’s twenty seven and at the top of his game. His tour is sold out-- every date, every venue. There’s fifteen thousand people waiting just outside these doors to see him, to hear his music, to have a night that they’ll always remember.
It’s heady and overwhelming in the best goddamn way.
He smiles a little, tracks the shift of expression in the mirror. He’s done this a thousand times and if he has anything to say about it, he will a thousand more. Magnus is his constant and even if he’s in a different city every night, he hopes he can be the same for his boyfriend.
“Let’s do this,” he says under his breath.
Turning, Alec’s left his dressing room and is just about to make the final turn to where the stage is when someone wraps a hand around his arm. Alec looks over his shoulder, expecting a tech with panic in their eyes from an impending disaster that’s always in the periphery of tour. Instead, he sees a man that fills his mouth with a sour taste.
“What the hell are you doing here,” Alec hisses before wrenching his arm free.
Jordan raises his hands in an appeasing move. “There was a time I was on the standing invitation list.”
“Yeah, well, those days are over,” Alec snaps back. “How the fuck did you get through security?”
“I have my ways,” Jordan replies slyly but when Alec doesn’t say anything, just stares at him without flinching, the man begrudgingly adds, “I may have bribed Raj.”
“Fucking Raj.” Alec curses viciously under his breath before glaring at Jordan. “You need to leave.”
Jordan ignores the threat in Alec’s eyes. He moves closer until he’s just in front of Alec and Alec’s gut twists at the lascivious once over he’s treated to.
“We had some great times last tour, Alec. I didn’t think it was out of the question to think we might have a few more this time around.”
“You thought wrong,” Alec grits out.
He doesn’t have a chance to say anything else before Jordan reaches out, trailing a finger over his open shirt. The bastard has a spare second to dip below the linen before Alec snatches his hand, tightening his fist around it.
“In case you’ve been living under a rock, I’m taken.” Alec’s voice is low, feels forced from his throat.
To his frustration, Jordan doesn’t back off, just smiles and it’s smarmy. Alec’s left feeling distinctly unclean at the fact that he let the man anywhere near him once upon a time. Exasperated, he reflects that he’d had no idea Jordan would take his ignoring his calls so ill-mannerly.
“You were always up for a good time, Lightwood. Don’t tell me that’s changed now.”
Alec smiles but it’s cold. “Oh no, I’m still always up for a good time. It’s just that now I have my fun with my boyfriend. Magnus.”
Jordan’s stare is incredulous when it lands on him, when it lifts from his chest. “You can’t really expect me to believe that, can you? Alec Lightwood’s, what? You’re monogamous now? A one man kind of guy? I call bullshit. There’s no way-- especially when you have tour about to start.”
“I don’t give a good goddamn what you think, Jordan. All you need to know is the last time we fucked, it was the last. I don’t cheat and I don’t lie. Now I suggest you leave before I really get angry.”
Alec twists his hand, and he’s gratified to hear Jordan’s little grunt of pain before he’s moving smoothly back, just in time for security to come barreling up to him. With a curt nod, Alec lets them have Jordan, who’s cursing him as he’s taken to the exit.
“Hawkblue,” Alec calls out, not looking back to his Head of Security.
“Yes, boss?”
“Raj won’t be here when I get to the venue tomorrow. Got it?”
There’s a beat of silence before Jessica’s answers smoothly. “Whatever you say, boss.”
Alec’s mouth twists in a wry grin and as he looks down at his watch, he curses as he sees there’s only five minutes until the concert starts. Right on time, the lights outside in the audience go out and the shrieks are almost enough to make his ears bleed.
God, he loves it.
Turning on his heel, Alec’s just set to hurry to get his mic and earpieces. He stumbles to a stop when he sees the person casually leaning against the wall, arm crossed, watching him silently.
“Magnus,” Alec greets. He wracks his brain for any hint of when his boyfriend might have joined the scene. “What’s up?”
He watches as Magnus’s mouth kicks up before he’s straightening. When Alec reaches him, Magnus still hasn’t said anything and then he’s grabbing Alec by the lapels and pulling him close for a searing kiss that launches Alec’s brain offline.
When Magnus ends the kiss, they’re both breathing hard and Magnus is grinning when he says, “I like this suit, darling.”
“Yeah,” Alec breathes in the space between their mouths.
“Oh yeah,” Magnus echoes and then he’s pulling Alec in for a lingering kiss that’s twice as intent as the first. “Break a leg.”
And then Magnus is shoving him away, towards the stage. On the clock visible behind the stage, Alec sees he has two minutes to mic up and he’s cursing and laughing as he turns to the sound tech that’s waiting impatiently at the edge of the stage.
“Alexander.”
Alec takes the mic pack as he looks over his shoulder to see Magnus studying him intently.
“Yeah, babe,” Alec asks when the silence stretches between them.
Magnus’s grin is wicked, a little sharp, as he merely offers, “I like you taken.”
It takes Alec a second to place the words and when he does, his eyes widen before he’s grimacing. He takes a sharper look at Magnus but his boyfriend looks perfectly unperturbed. Deciding to trust his gut, Alec shoots back, “Then it's a good thing that I like being taken.”
Magnus’s expression lightens and then they’re both laughing and Alec swears that if he wasn’t about to walk out on stage in front of thousands of people that he’d haul Magnus close and never let go.
He sees the rueful acknowledgement in Magnus’s eyes and then the crowd just yards away is absolutely losing their minds as the timer on stage starts blinking a row of zeroes.
Showtime.
Alec shoves his earpieces in and strides out to his mark. Everything falls away except the chants of the crowd, their screams, their love and support and fury that never stops making his chest ache under the onslaught.
The opening notes to his latest single starts and Alec picks up the mic and hits his cue dead on.
The lights come up, bathing him in warm golds and blues. He can only see the first few rows from his vantage point and as he nears the edge of the stage he looks down into the grinning faces of his family as they sing along to his music in the front row.
The crowd is an echoing cry and he sees countless phone lights in a veritable sea of fans. He pulls the mic away from his face at the last chorus and it’s only a little bit to catch his breath.
He’s stunned but unsurprised when the crowd fills the stadium, singing his words back to him, following his melody until it feels like the venue will collapse under the weight of it all.
Alec feels on top of the world and when he turns his face away from the crowd and looks to the side of the stage, he sees Magnus singing along, too, and his heart feels fit enough to burst inside his chest.
He wonders how a body’s meant to contain it all. He feels happy and full and like every damn dream he’s ever had has come true.
He smiles at Magnus, nods in a gesture that he knows is arrogant and cocksure but he just can’t help himself.
Magnus laughs and dances a little in his place and Alec swallows hard as he turns to look back at the blinding crowd.
He’s on top of the world and there’s not a fucking thing he’d change about it all.
Every failure, every nerve-wracking bit of doubt has brought him here and it coalesces in Alec’s chest, makes him shudder on the pedestal that he’s by turns resented and yearned for since the start. He’s luckier than most, Alec reflects, and he still has his whole life ahead of him.
With Magnus at his side, Alec knows anything’s possible.
As he brings his mic back up, as the song transitions into what will be his next single in the fall-- and hadn’t that music video with Magnus been a blast to film-- Alec lets it wrap around him, gives himself up to the feelings crashing through him.
He wouldn’t have it any other way.
