Billy Matsunaga and her guests go over many great points on this subject: Halloween in Japan/abroad, kimono as the costume/as part of the costume, the cheap (and horrible) things sold as kimono in the West, their racist/sexist undertones, the dreaded “geisha” stereotype, etc etc.

As for my answer, I’ll go with what I advise every year: be sensitive of your local community, make your research on how kimono are properly worn, and make sure the kimono is not THE costume but only a PART of the character you are dressing up as (=don’t dress up as a “Japanese” but for example as a Yuki-onna, or Tomoe Gozen, or a kimono-bound Disney character or whatever. So many cool concepts are possible :D)
