MORE INFO about the Shuji Sogabe ryomina doujinshi !!!
hello ryojihead nation !!!!!!!!!!!!! i hope you're all having a good day ^_^ i'm sure the vast majority of you are aware of the persona 3 manga, it's many ryomina tendencies, and it's author, Shuji Sogabe.
sogabe is also rather well-known for having written a popular ryomina doujin, イチゴちゃん SAY GOOD BYE [pictured], under the penname Kanae Kiryu. SGB was released at Comiket 73 on the 29/12/2007, around 10 months after the persona 3 manga began serialisation in dengeki maoh in february that year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
a few days before comiket, sogabe writes on his blog that he'll be handling books from kanae kiryu's doujin circle, ネコ同然。(like a cat.) on the 28/12/2007, he posts a link to kanae kiryu's blog, http://jlc.jugem.jp/ [pictured]
Tumblr media
later, on the 14/5/2008, a post is made to kiryu's blog that he applied to, and then later announced on 22/6/2008 that he was accepted to, the ryomina exclusive event Messiah Recipe ! (webpage being: http://messiah-recipe.com)
Tumblr media
alongside his acceptance, he also writes that he's working on a new book for the event. on the 26th, he posts again, saying the book will be called ワルツィング・キャット(Waltzing Cat) [pictured], and it was worked on alongside 蒼麻葵 (i believe their current twitter: @tasotaso_nyoro) !
Tumblr media
NOTE: on the kanae kiryu blog it is mentioned that Waltzing Cat's front and back cover join together much like SAY GOOD BYE's does, but since very few scans of the book exist, we only have the front cover (which shows minato's hand, at least ^_^;;)
Waltzing Cat was then released as promised at Messiah Recipe's event on June 28th, 2008. (this exclusivity is probably why it's so much rarer!) SAY GOOD BYE was also reprinted to be sold alongside it. a blog post was made on kiryu's blog two days after, thanking everyone who bought books at the event. he writes:
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all the people who picked up our books at the event. It was the first time for me to participate in an exclusive circle, and I was a little nervous, but there was no big confusion on the day of the event, and the proceedings were very relaxed and peaceful. Thank you to all the staff members! I really wanted to talk to more people, but I'm a chicken at heart and it's hard to build a community.......! Once you get to know each other, you can chat as much as you want. I would like to be a little more proactive next time, since this is a place where people who like the same things can get together.
after a few more posts (mostly about p4), and then a few months of silence, kanae kiryu's blog is closed in March 2009, with a thank-you goodbye message written on 22/03/2009. the only other mention of kanae's circle i found was as part of a persona 3 2009 calendar, presumably made in 2008. link to defunct listing here: https://www.suruga-ya.jp/product/detail/988900972
[pictured below: Messiah Recipe's event information from the website]
Tumblr media
i hope everyone had lots of fun at messiah recipe !!!!!!! and i'm glad i could help unearth this information !!!!!!!! let's hope sogabe continues to enjoy persona 3 and ryoji mochizuki for years to come ^_^

I saw another of these floating around that was...wrong, so I'm putting this together so people can keep characters' ages straight more easily. I'm not listing everyone, obviously, but characters whose ages get misstated most often.
Does this match up with the wiki or the Ultimanias? Absolutely not! The Ultimania says that Lucrecia was pregnant for three years! The wiki says that Vincent was shot after Sephiroth was born, even though Lucrecia was still pregnant when it happened! The source material, however, is 99.99% internally consistent with regard to the timeline, so I go with that, and that's what we're going by here.
Jenova Project S (1977 · [ μ ] – εγλ 1977)
Vincent: 26-27 (October 13, 1950)
Lucrecia: 27-28 (July 22, presumed 1949 or 1950)
Hojo: 32 (born 1945)
Pre-Crisis Core (2000 · [ μ ] – εγλ 2000)
Genesis: 23 (born early 1977, see first link below)

Sephiroth: 24-25
Angeal: 23-24

Adam Lanza: Animal Rights and Veganism
Created only as a resource for those interested in Adam's morality, not as glorification or positive reinforcement of his mind's workings.
Statements as spoken by Adam on his YouTube channel 'CulturalPhilistine' (2011-2012), regarding his views on Animal Rights and Veganism.
"The McDonalds corporation exploits animals. I’ve been a vegan since I was thirteen but it’s kind of … completely r*tarded to think that you’re actually accomplishing anything by not . . . being a vegan doesn’t mean that you do not harm animals, by living, by choosing life you are … it’s, life is innately harmful, life is innately coercive to everyone else..."
------(Pointless) CulturalPhilistine: The Movie {28 September 2011}
"I used to think it was a contradiction for people to say, um, that it was a contradiction for people to say that b*stiality somehow violated an animal’s rights and yet those same people, the same meateaters, would advocate factory-farming. And they didn’t think that violated animals” rights, when how could you possibly say that having sex with an animal violates its rights but killing the animals not? It didn’t make any sense to me."
------Rambling vlogrant of a ruminative vagrant {8 September 2011}
"'Two: It seems you’re always on some sort of diet?' By definition, yes."
------(Pointless) CulturalPhilistine: The Movie {28 September 2011}
Statements as written by Adam on the online forum 'Shocked Beyond Belief' under pseudonym 'Smiggles' (2009-2012), regarding his views on Animal Rights and Veganism.

Last time I posted Persona Club profiles, I mentioned the profiles were all in different handwriting fonts. Here is what appears to be... Adachi-esque dogshit handwriting font...?
Tumblr media
This book is from 2009 but his profile looks more or less the same as the P4U2 one just with some stuff arranged differently:
Sex/Gender: M
Birthday: February 1st, 1984 (Aquarius)
Age: 27 (28)
Height: 176cm (5'9")
Weight: 63kg (139lb)
Blood type: A
Likes Favorite Food: Sushi (especially uni), beef, dishes with cabbage
Dislikes: Filing paperwork, he's bad at tidying up his room
Good at / Specialty: Revolver maintenance
Unfortunately he doesn't have the whole high school profile that the party members do. (ノへ ̄、) Let the 27 year old go to high school.
Here's the whole 2 page spread with my crappy ass camera phone:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fanart is all art that was submitted to Atlus back in the day (2008-ish).
The artist's comment on the 2nd from the top right is, "Perhaps the man who made people fall into TVs is a victim who fell through the cracks of society?" Highlights how different other fans approached Adachi, versus how he was seen by English speakers as the Bitches and Whores Guy in 2009.

getting ready to (maybe) make an annoyingly long post about slade's comic canon history w dick (& roy), and just because i'm insane & so no one can accuse me of cherrypicking, i decided to try to track down EVERY canon interaction they have pre-flashpoint
idk if this is everything (doubtful), but! i think i have dug as deep as i can on my own, so i am now turning it over for tumblr peer review. or something. here you go. free niche reading list for those who want it, but also if you're more knowledgeable about this (esp where batcomics are concerned), please let me know if you see something i missed!
dick & slade interactions:
The New Teen Titans (1980) #2 (December 1980)
The New Teen Titans (1980) #10 (August 1981)
Tales of the Teen Titans #43, Annual #3 (1984) (the entire Judas Contract arc is important, obviously, but these are the only 2 where they directly interact)
Tales of the Teen Titans #54 (June 1985)
The New Teen Titans (1984) Annual #3 (1987)
The New Titans #65 (April 1990)
The New Titans #75 - 78, #83 - 84 (April 1991 - March 1992)
The New Titans #86 (May 1992) (in 3rd epilogue story )
Deathstroke (1991) #14 (September 1992)
Team Titans #1: Redwing (or the Terra version. there were like 63 different versions of this first issue. slade & dick's (one panel) interaction is only in the backup story--"Childhood's End"--which wasn't included in every version for whatever reason. idk! this era was a mess!!!)
Deathstroke (1991) #15 (October 1992)
Deathstroke (1991) Annual #1 (1992)
The New Titans Annual #8 (1992)
Teen Titans (1996) #15 (January 1998) (not sure of this one even counts?? it's literally one panel of him fighting a slade illusion, but whatever!)
Nightwing (1996) #17 - 18 (February - March 1998)
Titans (1999) #10 - 12 (December 1999 - February 2000)
Nightwing (1996) #79 - 82 (May - August 2003)
Nightwing (1996) #111 - 115 (October 2005 - February 2006), #117 (April 2006)
Teen Titans (2003) #45 - 46 (May - June 2007)
Batman and Robin (2009) #11 - 12 (June 2010)
Titans (2008) #28 - 30 (December 2010 - February 2011)
Titans (2008) Annual #1 (September 2011)
issues that don't have any actual interaction between them but still deserve honorable mentions:
the Panic in the Sky arc (1992) (they're both recruited by superman onto his squad to attack brainiac; they never cross paths on page, but their "working together" here is referenced in the next point)
Deathstroke (1991) #7 (February 1992) (dick briefly discusses his opinion on slade post-Panic in the Sky teamup)
The New Titans #89 (August 1992) (the titans see slade running around being insane on the local news, and dick briefly catches the "i can fix him" bug)
The Flash (1987) #214 (November 2004) (aftermath of rose joining slade)
Infinite Crisis #4 (March 2006) (bludhaven goes boom)
Booster Gold (2007) #22 - 24 (September 2009) (judas contract time travel shenanigans)
slade & roy interactions:
The New Titans #63 (February 1990) (they're running around working together for the whole Titan Plague arc (The New Titans #62 - 65), but this is the only one with direct interactions)
Deathstroke (1991) #18 - 20 (January - March 1993)
Deathstroke (1991) #45 (March 1995)
Deathstroke (1991) #48 (June 1995)*
New Titans #122 (June 1995)*
Teen Titans (1996) #15 (January 1998) (again, illusion slade, so it only half-counts)
Titans (1999) #10 - 12 (January - February 2000)
Titans (1999) #21 - 22 (November - December 2000)
Outsiders (2003) #4 (November 2003) (with slade disguised as batman)
Outsiders (2003) #12 (July 2004) (still in batman cosplay)
Outsiders (2003) #14 (September 2004) (off page, literally just one panel of a phonecall)
Outsiders (2003) #21 - 22 (April - May 2005)
Titans (2008) #26 - 36 (October 2010 - August 2011)
Titans (2008) Annual #1 (September 2011)
Titans (2008) #37 - 38 (September - October 2011)
*these are part of the Crimelord-Syndicate War arc, which is. a mess. a deeply, deeply 90s situation that was basically about (in part, at least) roy's titans crew saving slade's ass after he's framed for war crimes (again). these are the only two issues where they directly interact, but i think the whole thing is worth a read for them, and it's pretty impossible to find a proper reading order for it. so:
Deathstroke (1991) #48 (June 1995)
The New Titans #122 (June 1995)
Darkstars #32 (July 1995)
Deathstroke (1991) #49 (July 1995)
Deathstroke (1991) #50 (July 1995)
Deathstroke (1991) Annual #4 (1995) (the one where roy gets custody of rose)
honorable mentions:
Titans (1999) #9 (December 1999) (slade jumpscares lian & roy. honestly probably too minor to really qualify for this list, but it's just very important to me because it implies an offscreen scene where roy & chanda had to drag slade's unconscious ass out of a child's sandbox)
The Flash (1987) #214 (November 2004) (again, aftermath of rose joining slade)
and that's all i got. pleaseeee let me know if you have any suggestions!

Hello! since I found out not long ago that Taylor has known Jeff Azoff for a long time because he dated one of her friends she was hanging out with at the time I can't stop thinking about it. Do you know something more about that? Do you think Taylor introduced Jeff to Harry?
Possible, but I think the Azoff’s sought him out.
Harry said he met Jeff Azoff in Toronto in 2012 (2:30 of this video) the band was there for promo 28 February, concerts 29 and 31 May, I think the later, because the first one seemed a bit chaotic.
Harry probably came to the Azoff’s attention from the insane buzz about the band and Harry. Irving Azoff’s front line management (FLM) had a partnership with Syco from 2011 and was working with X-factor but they weren’t representing 1D, Modest was.
A few months after meeting Harry, in October 2012 Jeff left his family’s FLM to work with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) where he stayed with Harry as his client until 1D’s hiatus and Harry was no longer connected to Modest. In 2016 he left with Harry signed to FLM.
So I think the Azoff’s likely saw potential in Harry and Jeff left to cultivate the relationship without competing with FSM’s partnership with Syco.
If Taylor provided an introduction, maybe, she knew them both. Irving Azoff represents John Mayer who she dated in 2009, and she presented an award to Irving in 2008. But she wasn’t signed with the Azoff’s and I don’t think they’d really need it, they are well connected. I’ve heard a friend of hers dated Jeff but I can’t find a link for it now. The Azoff’s did side with her in the masters dispute though. She and Jeff were friendly at both Grammys and Jeff was also in the lobby photos with Harry and Taylor in 2015.

Swati Jamdare, 26 (India 2017)
Abortion in India disproportionately kills thousands of girls, so in an effort to end sex-discrimination abortions, the Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques Act 1994 was passed, making it illegal to run sex-determination testing before birth. Abortion itself still legal in India, and it still continues to kill thousands of girls daily.
An abortionist in Sangli was a key suspect in a mass femicide ring. Starting in 2009, Babasaheb Khidrapure carried out illegal sex-determination testing and killed unborn baby girls for money. His wife knew what he was doing and begged him to stop his crime spree, but she didn’t call the police because she was afraid of what he would do to her as revenge. The crimes went unnoticed until Khidrapure conducted an abortion on 26-year-old Swati Jamdare.
Swati’s illegal testing showed that she was having a daughter. Khidrapure performed the abortion and killed Swati along with her daughter on February 28, 2017. Police were then finally alerted to the crime spree that had already killed so many.
Police raided the facility and discovered no less than 19 dead baby girls nearby. The investigation continued and at least 14 criminals involved were arrested.
When his wife had previously confronted him about what he had done, Khidrapure tried to excuse the killings. He stated that “it (abortion) was not a crime” and actually claimed to have been helping poor families. Apparently killing girls and women was his idea of helping.
Activists condemned the killings as rampant female feticide and followed the case. Even if Khidrapure will be preventing from killing more victims, it’s already too late for Swati Jamdare and her child.

Justin Ryan (L) and Colin McAllister
1967 – Justin Ryan and Colin McAllister (born 10 January 1968) are Scottish interior decorators and television presenters. McAllister and Ryan have incorporated their trademark behaviour, which includes their frequent bickering, fussiness, tantrums, mild innuendo and light-hearted put-downs, as comic relief into most of their programmes.
As well as being co-hosts, McAllister and Ryan have also been in a relationship since April 1985 and are credited as introducing laminate flooring to British households. On 15 February 2008, they had a private civil partnership ceremony in London followed by a Caribbean honeymoon. After leaving 2009's edition of I'm A Celebrity contest on ITV, they announced that they were to renew their vows on their 25th anniversary, 28 April 2010.
Although their main residence is Glasgow, they divide their time between there and London in their own homes in both cities. The two also own a downtown loft in Toronto where they are currently devising new formats for 2013 North American broadcast. They have filmed 4 * 13 episode series of Colin and Justin's Home Heist for HGTV, which is broadcast in approximately 25 countries.
In 2011 Colin McAllister & Justin Ryan confirmed that after 22 years together, they are officially married. It was their experience in Canada that make the couple decide that they wanted to make their union official.
"I'm not sure if we would have decided to get married if we hadn't moved to, and fallen in love with Canada. After a year of living in Toronto, filming Home Heist, it became clear to us that it was time to tie the knot. Canada is such a progressive nation, so welcoming and open-mindedly liberal about gay marriage, that we felt thoroughly inspired," says Ryan.
McAllister added, "Previously every time someone asked us about getting married, I'd joke that even after such a long time I still wasn't sure if Justin was the right man! Let's just say that this year, I'm SURE."
The pair also write a weekly column in the Friday and Sunday editions of the Toronto Sun, offering up their suggestions for sprucing up homes. The column syndicates to 24 Hours Vancouver, 24 Hours Toronto and The London Free Press. The column is also available online. Colin and Justin contribute a weekly column to The Huffington Post and to Cottage Life Magazine as a companion to their current Cottage Life TV show.

1976 – Brice Beckham is an American actor most famous for his role as Wesley T. Owens in the television sitcom Mr. Belvedere and for his role as Corey in I Hate My 30's. He lives in Los Angeles and is a member of LA's Namaste theater group.

While in high school, he came in first place in the California High School Speech State Finals in 1993. He attended the University of Southern California, majoring in theater.
Beckham began his acting career in school plays. He later went on to do an assortment of radio commercials, and would later appear on an episode of the TV sitcom Alice. He starred in Mr. Belvedere as Wesley T. Owens. The show aired from 1985 to 1990. He appeared in an episode of Win, Lose, or Draw in 1989, and in a guest role in American Dreamer in 1991. 1977 – Ari Gold (d.2021) was an the award-winning, openly gay, independent recording artist who fashioned himself a high-octane career. An Orthodox Jew who was a successful child vocalist, Gold struggled with his gay identity both within the Jewish community and in the music industry. He starred in an autobiographical theater production Ari Gold – Untitled: The Making of a Gay Pop Star.
Gold declared, "Labels don't have to define us. They simply describe us—they shouldn't confine us. I for one am proud to be known as a gay artist . . . . I am done with hiding and done with shame in any form."
Born and raised in the Bronx in New York City, Gold's teacher parents both loved show business. Gold calls his parents "show Jews." When Gold was born, his birth announcement read like a show bill:
METRO GOLD WINNING PRODUCTIONS Proudly Present "Another Smash Hit" OUR THREE SONS With the brilliant new star ARI GOLD
At seven, Gold sang back-up for Diana Ross when she needed a children's choir for her Swept Away album. The same year he sang in the "My Buddy" jingle for Jell-O Pudding Pops with Bill Cosby. As a child, he sang over 400 jingles.
When he was eight, Gold did girls' voices for a syndicated cartoon series. He also recorded a girl's voice for the talking Cabbage Patch Kids dolls. You could dial the Cabbage Patch Kids talking telephone and hear Gold say, "Hi, I'm Sybil Sadie. Want to come play with me?"
Gold attended Yeshiva High School in Manhattan where he tried to downplay his music career. He was afraid that boys might make fun of him, especially for voicing girls. He tried not to talk about his work at school, and when he went to work he hid his yarmulke. It seemed ironic to Gold even then that he was hiding two essential aspects of his identity in an effort to be as "all-American" as he could at work and in school.
One of the first songs he wrote, at 14, is called "Experienced Girl," about an ex-girlfriend, who recently asked Gold to sing another of his songs, "Bashert (Meant to Be)," from his 2004 album, Space Under Sun, at her traditional Jewish wedding to another woman. "That's right," Gold says. "My first girlfriend turned out to be a lesbian."
In high school, Gold had two girlfriends, which he thought kept him safe from being outed as a "homo." Gold says, "I can joke about it now, but at the time I felt quite tortured and felt that if anyone found out my secret of being gay I would be ex-communicated from my friends, my school, my community, and my family."
Gold came out to his best friend when he was sixteen. Two years later, he came out to his family in an 18-page letter. Gold says his family's reaction was "fairly accepting." "My Mom was proud of me because she thought it wasn't healthy to keep a secret like that," Gold says, "but when I stopped being religious, that was a lot more difficult for them."
His first album, Ari Gold included explicit gay love songs, such as "Write Me a Love Song" and "Home." In the former, Gold sings openly about his lover asking him to write him a song about love between men.
In 2004, Gold released Space Under Sun on his own label, Gold18 Records. It debuted as #1 on the Outvoice Charts, and Gold was featured on the covers of many gay magazines. The album solidified Gold as an emerging gay musical star. The album includes songs about such subjects as a man and woman fighting over the same man ("He's on My Team") and the trauma of getting caught by the cops having sex in public ("Caught"). It also includes the tender ballad "Bashert (Meant to Be)," which reflects Gold's Jewish identity.
In 2007, Gold released his third studio album Transport Systems. The songs on this album are about such topics as the down low, gay relationships, crystal meth addiction, gender identity, and spirituality.
As for being a gay artist, Gold said he saw his gayness as a gift. "As long as my friends are being beaten on the street, as long as there are still kids killing themselves because of shame, and as long as we are still fighting for our basic civil and human rights, I will continue to shout [my gayness] from the queer roof tops."
Gold died from leukemia on February 14, 2021, three days after his 47th birthday. RuPaul, whom Gold had described as a mentor, was among those to express condolences on social media.

1983 – Robert Sepúlveda Jr. is a former fashion model, interior designer, creative director, and LGBTQ activist.
He was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He grew up in Lake City, Florida where he attended Columbia High School. He received his degree in interior design from The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, graduating summa cum laude. During his college years Sepúlveda Jr. worked as an escort to pay his way through college and to pay his rent.
Sepúlveda began his career at Valley Forge Fabrics, a supplier of decorative upholstery fabrics for the hospitality industry. There, he created and executed interior design schemes for hoteliers. In 2008 Sepúlveda moved to New York City where he began working with fashion houses Polo Ralph Lauren, Rugby Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, and Kenneth Cole, eventually assuming the role of acting Global Visual Manager of the Calvin Klein Home Collection. Sepúlveda has since founded RSJdesign, LLC, his interior design firm specializing in luxury residential and commercial spaces.
In September 2016, Sepúlveda Jr. starred on the dating show Finding Prince Charming, which airs on the network Logo. The series depicted Sepúlveda Jr. getting to know thirteen gay men and each week he has to eliminate 1 in a ceremony. The show shares the similar format to The Bachelor, however it is the first all gay-cast dating show. Prior to the series airing, controversy arose surrounding Sepúlveda Jr with his past work as an escort being revealed and his personal videos were released by an ex-partner. Logo has spoken out on that matter claiming they were fully aware of his history and explained that the series is reality and consists of many discussions such as "first time love to coming to terms with one’s past, fear of commitment and even HIV."

In February, a dermatologist in New York City contacted the state’s health department about two female patients, ages 28 and 47, who were not related but suffered from the same troubling problem. They had ringworm, a scaly, crusty, disfiguring rash covering large portions of their bodies. Ringworm sounds like a parasite, but it is caused by a fungus—and in both cases, the fungus was a species that had never been recorded in the US. It was also severely drug-resistant, requiring treatment with several types of antifungals for weeks. There was no indication where the patients might have acquired the infections; the older woman had visited Bangladesh the previous summer, but the younger one, who was pregnant and hadn’t traveled, must have picked it up in the city.
That seemed alarming—but in one of the largest and most mobile cities on the planet, weird medical things happen. The state reported the cases to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the New York doctors and some CDC staff wrote up an account for the CDC’s weekly journal.
Then, in March, some of those same CDC investigators reported that a fungus they had been tracking—Candida auris, an extremely drug-resistant yeast that invades health care facilities and kills two-thirds of the people infected with it—had risen to more than 10,000 cases since it was identified in the US in 2016, tripling in just two years. In April, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services rushed to investigate cases of a fungal infection called blastomycosis centered on a paper mill, an outbreak that would grow to 118 people, the largest ever recorded. And in May, US and Mexican health authorities jointly rang an alarm over cases of meningitis, caused by the fungus Fusarium solani, which seemed to have spread to more than 150 clinic patients via contaminated anesthesia products. By mid-August, 12 people had died.
All of those outbreaks are different: in size, in pathogen, in location, and the people they affected. But what links them is that they were all caused by fungi—and to the small cadre of researchers who keep track of such things, that is worrisome. The experts share a sense, supported by incomplete data but also backed by hunch, that serious fungal infections are occurring more frequently, affecting more people, and also are becoming harder to treat.
“We don’t have good surveillance for fungal infections,” admits Tom Chiller, an infectious disease physician and chief of the CDC’s mycotic diseases branch. “So it’s hard to give a fully data-driven answer. But the feeling is definitely that there is an increase.”
The question is: Why? There may be multiple answers. More people are living longer with chronic illnesses, and their impaired immune systems make them vulnerable. But the problem isn’t only that fungal illnesses are more frequent; it is also that new pathogens are emerging and existing ones are claiming new territory. When experts try to imagine what could exert such widespread influence, they land on the possibility that the problem is climate change.
Fungi live in the environment; they affect us when they encounter us, but for many, their original homes are vegetation, decaying plant matter, and dirt. “Speculative as it is, it's entirely possible that if you have an environmental organism with a very specific ecological niche, out there in the world, you only need a very small change in the surface temperature or the air temperature to alter its niche and allow it to proliferate,” says Neil Stone, a physician and fungal infections lead at University College London Hospitals. “And it's that plausibility, and the lack of any alternative explanation, which makes it believable as a hypothesis.”
For this argument, C. auris is the leading piece of evidence. The rogue yeast was first identified in 2009 in a single patient in Japan, but within just a few years, it bloomed on several continents. Genetic analyses showed the organism had not spread from one continent to others, but emerged simultaneously on each. It also behaved strikingly differently from most yeasts, gaining the abilities to pass from person to person and to thrive on cool inorganic surfaces such as plastic and metal—while collecting an array of resistance factors that protect it from almost all antifungal drugs.
Arturo Casadevall, a physician and chair of molecular microbiology and immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, proposed more than a decade ago that the rise of mammals over dinosaurs was propelled by an inherent protection: Internally, we’re too hot. Most fungi flourish at 30 degrees Celsius or less, while our body temperature hovers between 36 and 37 degrees Celsius. (That’s from 96.8 to the familiar 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit.) So when an asteroid smashed into the Earth 65 million years ago, throwing up a cloud of pulverized vegetation and soil and the fungi those would have contained, the Earth’s dominant reptiles were vulnerable, but early mammals were not.
But Casadevall warned of a corollary possibility: If fungi increased their thermotolerance, learning to live at higher temperatures as the climate warms, mammals could lose that built-in protection—and he proposed that the weird success of C. auris might indicate it is the first fungal pathogen whose adaptation to warmth allowed it to find a new niche.
In the 14 years since it was first spotted, C. auris has invaded health care in dozens of countries. But in that time, other fungal infections have also surged. At the height of the Covid pandemic, India experienced tens of thousands of cases of mucormycosis, commonly called “black fungus,” which ate away at the faces and airways of people made vulnerable by having diabetes or taking steroids. In California, diagnosis of coccidioidomycosis (also called Valley fever) rose 800 percent between 2000 and 2018. And new species are affecting humans for the first time. In 2018, a team of researchers from the US and Canada identified four people, two from each country, who had been infected by a newly identified genus, Emergomyces. Two of the four died. (The fungus got its name because it is “emerging” into the human world.) Subsequently, a multinational team identified five species in that newly-named genus that are causing infections all over the world, most severely in Africa.
Fungi are on the move. Last April, a research group from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis examined the expected geographic range in the US of what are usually called the “endemic fungi,” ones that flourish only within specific areas. Those are Valley fever in the dry Southwestern US; histoplasmosis in the damp Ohio River valley; and blastomycosis, with a range that stretched from the Great Lakes down the Mississippi to New Orleans, and as far east as the Virginia coast. Using Medicare data from more than 45 million seniors who sought health care between 2007 and 2016, the group discovered that the historically documented range of these fungi is wildly out of step with where they are actually causing infections now. Histoplasmosis, they found, had been diagnosed in at least one county in 94 percent of US states; blastomycosis, in 78 percent; and Valley fever in 69 percent.
That represents an extension of range so vast that it challenges the meaning of endemic—to the point that Patrick Mazi, an assistant professor of medicine and first author on the paper, urges clinicians to cease thinking of fungal infections as geographically determined, and focus on symptoms instead. “Let’s acknowledge that everything is dynamic and changing,” he says. “We should recognize that for the sake of our patients.”
Without taking detailed histories from those millions of patients, it can’t be proven where their infections originated. They could have been exposed within the fungi’s historic home ranges and then traveled; one analysis has correlated the occurrence of Valley fever in the upper Midwest with “snowbird” winter migration to the Southwest. But there is plenty of evidence for fungal pathogens moving to new areas, via animals and bats, and on winds and wildfire smoke as well.
However fungi are relocating, they appear to be adapting to their new homes, and changes in temperature and precipitation patterns may be part of that. Ten years ago, CDC and state investigators found people in eastern Washington state infected with Valley fever, and proved they had acquired it not while traveling, but locally—in a place long considered too cold and dry for that fungus to survive. A group based primarily at UC Berkeley has demonstrated that transmission of Valley fever in California is intimately linked to weather there—and that the growing pattern of extreme drought interrupted by erratic precipitation is increasing the disease’s spread. And other researchers have identified cases of a novel blastomycosis in Saskatchewan and Alberta, pushing the map of where that infection occurs further north and west.
The impact of climate change on complex phenomena is notoriously hard to prove—but researchers can now add some evidence to back up their intuition that fungi are adapting. In January, researchers at Duke University reported that when they raised the lab temperatures in which they were growing the pathogenic fungus Cryptococcus deneoformans—the cause of a quarter-million cases of meningitis each year—the fungus’s rate of mutation revved into overdrive. That activated mobile elements in the fungus’s genome, known as transposons, allowing them to move around within its DNA and affect how its genes are regulated. The rate of mutation was five times higher in fungi raised at human body temperature than at an incubator temperature of 30 degrees Celsius—and when the investigators infected mice with the transformed fungi, the rate of mutation sped up even more.
Researchers who are paying attention to rising fungal problems make a final point about them: We’re not seeing more cases because we’ve gotten better at finding them. Tests and devices to detect fungi, especially within patients, haven’t undergone a sudden improvement. In fact, achieving better diagnostics was top of a list published by the World Health Organization last fall when it drew up its first ranking of “priority fungal pathogens” in hopes of guiding research.
Multiple studies have shown that patients can wait two to seven weeks to get an accurate diagnosis, even when they are infected with fungi endemic to where they live, which ought to be familiar to local physicians. So understanding that fungi are changing their behavior is really an opportunity to identify how many more people might be in danger than previously thought—and to get out in front of that risk. “Patients are being diagnosed out of traditional areas, and we are missing them,” Mazi says. “All of these are opportunities to achieve better outcomes.”

The media and the Christian Right nuts are really running Heath’s death into the ground. Suicide or not? Who cares? Dead is Dead.
9:25pm “Sudden death of Heath ledger just shot across the screen again on Fox 40.
8/11/09
Heath ledger is on the cover of Vanity Faire now, some fancy magazine.

Notes:
Brokeback Mountain was a movie released in 2005 about two gay cowboys and their romantic relationship. It was a great , powerful movie which helped advance the gay cause. Heath Ledger played the part of one of the gay cowboys.
His death on January 22, 2008 sparked a fundamentalist church to say that they would show up at Heath’s funeral and at the 2009 Oscars.
The movie “Milk”, about the life and death of San Fransisco Board of Supervisor
Harvey Milk had come out in 2008. Milk was the first openly gay person elected to office in California. He was assassinated by fellow former  Board of Supervisors Dan White in 1978. Sean Penn, who played Milk in the movie, won an Oscar for best actor for the role. Per The Telegraph, US news website  February 23, 2009 “Stars on their way to the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles (for the Oscars)  had to pass a group of Christian demonstrators outside who protested against gay marriage and attacked the memory of the late Heath Ledger…for his role in Brokeback Mountain.
