Hello! I started following you for Le Guin reasons but have been entertained by your Aubreyadposting lately. I recently was listening to a podcast called Between the Covers where Ursula K. Le Guin was interviewed about her writing book Steering the Craft, and she says (at 46:45 if you want to give it a listen):

"Over and over, I want to send people to read Patrick O'Brien, his Sea Stories. People who are afraid of long sentences, people who don't know how to describe action... well, if you want to see how to write a sea battle, you go to O'Brien. He is an incredibly good action writer. What is he doing? Well, I don't really know, but he's certainly worth studying! Anyways, so, within genre you can find marvelous examples of writing."

Aw yeah I love David Naimon’s pod! Le Guin also has another great quote about how she doesn’t love the marketing of books as ‘bestsellers’ but that there are books that become hugely popular because they’re genuinely and enduringly that good and she names Patrick O’Brian’s novels as an example.

I love that quote of hers about sentences. Semicolon enjoyer recognize semicolon enjoyer.

Das muitas coisas que poderia falar sobre esse livro, gostaria de abrir essa resenha com o que mais me chamou a atenção. Carl Sagan soube escrever, em Contato, uma protagonista feminina, acadêmica, forte, de uma forma primorosa. Sem muito biscoito também, é sempre bom lembrar que este livro foi escrito em 1985 e mesmo que não seja a tanto tempo assim de distância de 2022, é extremamente válido comentar sobre o refresco que foi ler sobre Eleanor Arroway da forma como foi escrita.

Contato com extraterrestres não é sinônimo de homenzinhos verdes desembarcando de um disco voador. É muito mais: sinais captados num radiotelescópio podem conter mensagens capazes de nos fazer repensar toda a nossa concepção da vida e do universo. Esse é o ponto de partida de Carl Sagan, que, aliando as tensões da melhor literatura ao conhecimento científico mais avançado, compõe um romance que pode provocar em nós todas as reações - menos a indiferença.

Contato é um livro para quem gosta de ciência. Isso já deveria ser claro desde o princípio, mas é muito importante lembrar, visto que durante o romance existem muitos dados e informações extremamente específicas ao mundo científico.

Independentemente disto, a narrativa não é só sobre ciência. Conversas sobre a sociedade, relações e principalmente, sobre fé, são muito grandes no enredo de Contato. A conversa entre religiosidade, ceticismo e ciência são muito bem exploradas e algumas das melhores passagens do livro. Todo o enredo emocional que envolve a protagonista, e também os enredos secundários dos outros personagens são cativantes. Carl Sagan escreveu muito bem, e profundamente na medida certa, uma quantidade vasta de personagens importantes para a narrativa, cada um de sua forma.

Em alguns momentos o livro torna-se, inevitavelmente, cansativo pelos longos monólogos e devaneios científicos, mas ainda assim é válida a dor de cabeça dos que detestam matemática. As discussões filosóficas são pertinentes até o dia de hoje, e eu garanto que por muitas vezes você poderá se ver reconhecendo atitudes com os políticos da atualidade (infelizmente). Além disso, considero uma ideia ótima assistir o filme de 1997 (com Jodie Foster como dra. Eleanor Arroway), levando em conta que o autor também escreveu o roteiro. O filme com certeza é mais conciso e uma boa pegada pra quem não se encontrar tanto no livro, apesar de acreditar que são experiências completamente diferentes que merecem ser apreciadas separadamente.

Contato é um livro para que você pense, pense mais um pouquinho e quando você cansar de pensar, pense mais um pouco. Com certeza não foi uma das leituras mais fáceis que eu já fiz, mas uma das mais recompensadoras de ter persistido.

have you ever thought about parallels between Harry Potter marauders and TRC? James Potter = Gansey (leader, stag symbol), Remus Lupin = Adam (academic, rough personal life), Sirius = Ronan (aesthetically, also buckbeak=chainsaw?), Lily = Blue (blue lily, obvs), Peter Pettigrew = Noah (the quieter one, controlled by evil powers later on)... even the ships all work out haha

It does seem to fit very nicely, though I might not be the best person to ask, since I never actually watched Fantastic Beasts or read the book, oops. What I know I’ve just kind of learned by osmosis.
