tepueh pu, the domesticated que'arsaeb animals of maanuls that act as a "sheperd dog" for them, but for the ocean obviously. more info and images below ->

tepueh pu are a tiny aquatic animal of the que'arsaeb reign meaning it has 6 limbs and its body is segmented in distinct parts, It also means they have a sort of "bone" exo-skeleton with rough skin on top. their front limbs who serve no purpose but to do courting dance and occasionally help themselves to crawl around.

The fur-like things around the eyes and front limbs are purely for courtship, they are not made out of modified feathers as feathers are exclusive to the silieus reign, instead its sort of bristles that are quite rough to the human touch. maanuls do find it entertaining to see them court and as a result of that, they get excited during the part of the year when they court. Creating safe temporary spaces on the beach usually being circle-shaped, all maanuls do is watch them perform and fall over, if they cant get up they come and assist them to put them on their feet again. Tepueh courting consists of them desperately trying to get on their feet (usually being pushing themselves onto a rock to balance on their feet, but more commonly maanuls help them to), then the bright ones will shake their arms. Extending them and vigorously shaking the bits that have the bristles, that when rubbing against each other rapidly, create a sound that can be compared to sand being shaken in a jar. the brighter the bristles, the better the sound, and the bigger the moves is what will attract a partner. Said partners are the dull ones.

I'm not sure if they're a unisex species, they might just be random individuals who get a certain boost of hormones that gives them bright bristles and they have to perform for the others who are dull, or if they're just bright males and dull females.

Like i said they're very pathetic on land, meaning maanuls carry them when they need to be transported on land for a reason. Central north maanuls who need to migrate once a year due to temperature drops in the far north have to carry their Tepueh pu on long distances, thus they use these attire, where they attach 2 tupueh pu per side, transporting 4 in total. While I'm talking about north maanuls, every other maanuls would also use this attire to transport multiple tupueh pu. Although said attire has regional variants in terms of designs, a rough look at what a northern one would look like here ->

as seen in the example, tupueh pu can have different color variations per region, While this is not the final look of northern tupeuh pu there would be light coloration from mutations. Tupueh pu are purely bred to be working species not a pet, so while color mutations are seen as a fun thing its not their priority or what they're searching for. While not a family pet it doesn't mean children do not play with them from time to time in the water. However, tupueh pu can be used as a service "pet" in the water for maanuls with blindness or other disabilities affecting vision that would require a service pet to navigate in waters. tupueh pu are never bred to be fancy but to be useful to maanuls, they're very grateful to have them and treat them with great respect.

While they are not house pets it doesn't mean they cannot be pampered outside of working hours by maanuls, being given treats, groomed daily by owners, and being treated with care for the smallest illness they could catch.

the breathing holes of tupueh pu are on each side of their back, due to being aquatic for quite a while their opperculums had the time to shift to a more convenient place for quick gasp of air at the surface. Their maanul owners however do not, maanuls when wanting to breathe before swimming again need to get on their back once reaching the surface, as their opperculums are placed here. While technically they could push air to enter their vocal vents and redirect it to the lungs its not something they do as they do not inhale enough air using this method to feel comfortable.

ocean shepherd, or just called shepherd among maanuls, originally i thought of them guarding a group of smaller animals (small fish) tho the idea of one or three large slow domesticated cattle sounds more cool in my opinion and also easier to contain for maanuls overall. their cattle would need maanul assistance to live comfortably, maanul coming near them by canoe or even swimming if they're not so far. usually always have at least one maanul by their side who shifts their guarding job with other fishermen after a period of time. I imagine said cattle to be kept in a shallow kelp forest where it has all the food it needs, and little to no predators around to worry around. Maanuls might even sit on their backs during their shift duty because the cattle is docile and doesn't bother them doing it, plus they also need to get on them when they pamper them (by cleaning them)

this is my rough vision of it for now, while i have tupueh pu (tho its quite bare bones on this post) , i just need to design the cattle now, then write a whole long post about how maanul sheperds works.

Kyungsoo: Recording My Thoughts Out Loud

"Could we maybe try that line again?" You speak into the small microphone that projects your voice into Kyungsoo's recording booth. He scrunches his face in annoyance, though he is not annoyed at you particularly.

"Okay, ready," he signals a thumbs-up in your direction, and you replay the soundtrack from the demo's pre-chorus.

You and Kyungsoo were currently recording his lines for one of EXO's B-sides for an upcoming comeback. The only issue was that, surprisingly, Kyungsoo wasn't performing as well as he usually did.

"I started thinking of you, but not in the same way that I used to," Kyungsoo sung, pouring his everything into the lyric. He finished, let out a grunt, and motioned for you to re-record it again.

And so, you did.

Followed by another grunt,

and one last re-recording after that.

He was flustered, and you could see it. For a moment, you watched fondly in awe as he pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose, completely focused on his own thoughts as he wrote something next to the lyric pages in front of him, quietly humming the tune of his adlibs in strive of perfection.

At this point, you weren't even sure if keeping him to record so late at night was truly a mishap or a blessing in disguise.

"I don't know," he muttered into the microphone, "if this even sounds good. This line, right here. What do you think of some improv?" He bit his lower lip, then shot his eyes up to make straight and sudden eye-contact with you, which made your heart skip a heavy beat and force you out of your daydreaming.

"Oh, uhm, okay. What did you have in mind?"

He cleared his throat. "Give me a few minutes, let me try to figure something out," he smiled once he got your approval.

Once again, you found yourself secretly admiring the sight of a deep-in-thought Kyungsoo humming different harmonizations that would better suit the line he was assigned.

"Hmmm-hmmmm," you could, through your own pair of studio headphones, quietly listen into his voice as he did so.

Shit, he sounds so fucking beautiful, you thought quietly to yourself.

"Hmm, hmm, hmm," he continued on, unaware of your admiration.

I could listen to you aaallllll day, you smiled sheepishly to yourself, putting your fingers over your mouth to hide your now obvious blushing. I need to calm down, I can't be unfocused right now!

If anyone ever finds out I'm crushing badly on this fucker, I'll probably get fired or something. Maybe. I've only been here a week. I'm not about to find out.

But who knew... Kyungsoo of EXO is so unbelievably attractive... and he doesn't even try!

His quiet but thoughtful personality, matched with an angelic voice...

Fuck, I love my new job.

"Okay," he shifted his focus back to you, "I think I got it now."

You proceeded to finish recording the rest of his lines flawlessly, and his contribution certainly gave the song more of an EXO vibe than it had before.

"Okay, I'm going to look over the adlibs for the bridge, and then the outro stuff," he smiled. "One minute, please."

"You can have all of my damn time if you want it," you muttered quietly under your breath, once again enjoying the sounds of his harmonization through your headphones.

"This line..." he examined his papers, singing up a scale to slowly make his way to the high note he needed to reach.

"Come with me 'cause I need you right... nooooooooooooww!" He closed his eyes as he gracefully reached the most beautiful vocal note you'd ever possibly heard.

"You're so fucking HOT for that," you whispered into your hand, covering the stupid smile that spread vulnerably across your face.

He tried it once more, this time probably more perfect than the last, if that was even possible.

"I need an inhaler," you giggled and whispered quietly to yourself, "because this man sounds prettier than Baekhyun. Than fucking Baekhyun!"

After about ten or so minutes, you finally ended the recording session, giving Kyungsoo a big thumbs-up as you proceeded to save the computer audio files appropriately while he gathered his things in the booth to leave.

"Well done today, Kyungsoo," you said as encouragingly but also professionally as you possibly could. You were still working, after all, and had to respect him regardless of being co-workers, a fan, a mutual, or not.

"Thank you," he smiled at you, and you offered a smile back as he motioned his way to open the door for you both to exit the recording room.

"Oh," he turned to look at you, placing one hand against the doorknob, "I have a quick question."

"Sure," you looked up at him as you finished zipping up your coat.

"Do you really think I'm better than Baek?"

Your heart dropped. No wait, your face dropped first. Matter of fact, you almost nearly collapsed at the words that slipped his mouth.

"You-- what?"

"Baekhyun," he said, a gentle smile with perfect teeth now spreading curiously over his face. "And I'm hot too, apparently."

"I'm-- WHAT!?"

He let out a comfortable laugh as you felt your face redden, your palms dampening intensely, and your heart practically racing out of your chest.

"You know," he said, motioning towards the desk of the computer and pointing toward a small switch on the left center of the audio console. "This right here mutes your mic. You mute it and unmute it when you want to talk to me in the booth. I think I forgot to show you that when I went over this console's basic things, but I figured you'd find it since you're a session recorder, after all. I guess not."

Shit, you defeatedly cover your face in total embarrassment.

"I'm so sorry, Kyungsoo! I'm really taking this job seriously and I'm not some creepy crazy fan--"

"Don't worry about it," he laughed, wrapping a gentle arm around your shoulders and bringing you into a hug.

Fuck, you thought as the scent of his elegant cologne hit your face.

"I won't tell anyone," he winked, "just as long as you promise to keep doing it. But just with me."

You smiled awkwardly, nodding at his request.

Well, now he just knows what he's doing. And he's good at it.

"Let me walk you out to your car tonight."

Offering you his sweetest smile and gentlest hand to grab, he opened the door for you and, like the gentleman he was, allowed you to walk out first.

do kariians have any slang?

For the most part they'd be more likely to associate noises with certain things as opposed to using full words. And those noises would mean different things when made with a different set of vocal chords (they have three). For example,

Hiss (highest throat): Startled, concerned.

Hiss (middle throat): Exasperation, in pain

Hiss (lowest throat): Threat, warning

Then, since most kariians tend to hiss with their middle throat when exasperated — if one kariian fucks something up, and another one looks at them and hisses like that, they're essentially telling the other one that they're an idiot. If they hiss with their highest throat they're more likely just concerned.

Other than things like that, slang changes with the era. Here are a few words you could consider to fall under that description.

Dominionite: When a Zehen-Khasiik refers to another as a 'Dominionite' as opposed to another Kariian, it's probably a lowkey way of saying they're either an alien or a hybrid.

Xae-ez: A portmanteau of 'ez' (meaning: head) and Xaezeinis (capital city of Clan Kyoœdœ). Would essentially be like calling someone an 'air head' or, more specifically, a 'spire-head'. A kariian would call someone who has a lot of crazy, unconventional ideas this as if to suggest they belong with Clan Kyoœdœ. This could be a compliment or an insult, as it usually means one is insane and intelligent in equal measure. Or that they have a bad attention span.

Zourner: What you would call a kariian that comes from Zourne, the largest mountain-range on the home-world. Zourne is associated with a wide diversity of kariian culture, as it is where the vast majority of the lesser clans call home. Thus when a kariian calls someone a Zourner, it could mean they're just from Zourne, or it could mean they're very culturally diverse. Additionally, calling someone an Exo-Zourner means they're from an area in Dominion space (but off Kariio) that is equally diverse (but in alien life).

The Maw: Or the 'Many Maw'. Referring to the current Speaker, Yeskiv.

A Tooth: Way to refer to someone who is in the Speaker's pocket, or someone the Speaker keeps a close eye on.

FAS-Passer: Trespassers that are specifically from the Federation of Allied Species (F.A.S). When one calls another a 'FAS-Passer', the implication is that they're dead already.

Soft-Claws: Usually associated with Clan Svhethis, whose motto is 'Sharp Claws, Soft Words'. The nickname is short for the opposite: Soft Claws, Sharp Words. This is to say that they're unwilling to fight but will use their tongue to do so instead. It's not always a way to call someone a coward, but if it's a Yukariksiasian saying it, that's probably what it meant.

Ix Vekelera: Means 'Like The Shattered Sea'. Vekelera is the name of the west sea of Kariio 15-R, where the remnants of scattered land and chunks of ice dot the landscape, seemingly the remains of an entire continent utterly smashed to pieces. To say someone is 'Ix Vekelera' means they're Absolutely Destroyed, basically.

Top 20 K-pop songs in 2023 (Part 1, 20-11)

This has been yet another fantastic year for K-pop, and putting this ranking together was so hard that I had to take drastic measures. So, this time round I'm only including one song per solo artist or group, be it a title track, a B-side or even a Japanese release. Anyway, let's get going:

20. Do Not Touch by Twice MiSaMo

I know this is technically J-pop, but I don't care cause it's a bop. I never expected this specific unit to go with this sound and concept for their debut, so it was one of the most pleasant surprises of the year.

19. Sugarcoat by Natty (Kiss Of Life)

Launching Kiss Of Life through this solo song was a brilliant idea, cause it's pop perfection. I really hope they work with this producer for future comebacks.

18. Sweet Juice by Purple Kiss

I love this song's creepy vibes and its string arrangement. Easily one of the most underrated K-pop releases of the year.

17. Like Crazy by Jimin (BTS)

The instrumental for this song is spectacular, and Jimin's vocals add a touch of mysticism that makes the whole thing spellbinding.

16. Thirsty by Aespa

Quite possibly the best R&B style K-pop song we've gotten this year. I kept playing it over and over when it came out.

15. But Sometimes by Boynextdoor

I just love this song's pop-punk, indie-ish sound. I see so much potential in this group, and I really think they could be huge if they keep giving us music like this.

14. Love Effect by ONF

I missed their sound so much and I'm so glad they finally came back. We really need more K-pop like this.

13. Rover by Kai (EXO)

Usually I'm not the biggest fan of reggaeton and that type of music genres, but when they're mixed with K-pop we always get superb bops like this one.

12. Slow Dancing by V (BTS)

Nobody else in the whole K-pop idol industry could pull this off. V has truly found the perfect style for his voice and image. Also, the flute solo at the end of the song is magical.

11. Shooting Star by XG

Yeah, I know, this song technically isn't K-pop, but I had to include it because its pre-chorus and chorus are among the best stuff I've heard this year.

Peak Time - (Episodes 1&2)

I like it, I like it a lot. That’s it, really. The whole idea behind it is amazing really and for one I’m really glad that this isn’t an Mnet show. I feel like Mnet, being Mnet, would try to create some sort of rivalry between the groups. I don’t think JTBC will do that, at least considering what I remember of Mix Nine but I can be wrong, it’s been so many years lol. Also the judges are good ones. I personally don’t like Jay Park but this show might change it, idk? Kyuhyun on the other hand… Really starting to dislike him.

I’ll mention only the performances I liked because there were too many to go through them all. There’s really no specific order to this, but I did like some of them more than others

Team 20:00 (M.O.N.T) – Fever

They made me forget that this is, originally, a JYP song. That’s show good they were. And they didn’t have a whole of dancing and there’s only 2 of them and they managed to make it feel it was their concert. I remember them from Mix Nine and this is a huge jump from that. I’m curious to see how they move forward and how will they be able to tackle other types of music. They seemed to be really in their element on this.

Team 11:00 (Vanner) – Adore U

First off, their story? Amazing, they deserve the world, they just really want to perform, doesn’t matter what they have to do on the side to be able to do so. And their performance? Sooooo good. It takes good vocalists to cover good vocalists and I believe they did a fantastic job. I’m already following them everywhere

Team 8:00 (DKB) – The Real

In this song, more than in others, there’s this energy that’s very specific to Ateez, it’s related to them as people and how they behave. To me, DKB managed to emulate that very well in this performance. They had fun throughout the entire thing and you could see it in their faces. It made me tear up a little bit when they were getting praised and the leader (?) was holding back his tears.

Team 23:00 (DGNA) – Mirotic

As expected, 2nd gen really hits different. Everything about this performance was magnificent, I can’t even really express how good it really was. The hold this song has on me it’s not even funny and the fact that these guys came out singing like that, no backtrack, vocals for days, so powerful all three of them and really dancing is insane. The other groups were so surprised to see them sing like that and I just was so happy, smiling and singing along the whole time.

Team 02:00 (NTX) – No Mercy

This was really good, to me the least expected song. I really liked it and there isn’t a whole lot to comment on it. I know that they’ve been getting some negative feedback from knets, because they dissed 4th gen during the rap verse but honestly? Who cares? Let’s start with the fact that they are, indeed, part of 4th gen and really a lot of the groups tend to focus on visuals and dancing more than anything else, sometimes it feels like watching a dance group that happens to have mics attached to their faces. So yeah, good job to them. (Also, imagine how crazy it is to perform to a song in a competition like this and then have the original singer come out as a contestant.)

Team 14:00 (GHOST9) – Never Ever

I like it, it wasn’t perfect at times, but overall very good. I’m surprised that they had to stay on hold for the judges to decide whether or not they would be able to move to the next round. To me they performed better than Bae143 and ATBO, who passed by the amount of votes imediatly (which don’t take me as reference because I usually hate when people cover exo or any song sang by exo members so). I was really surprised to seem them perform as just 5 and the fact that they had to rearrange the entire performance in day and still managed to do a decent job is really impressive. The guy rapping was screaming a little too much, I’m not sure if he was trying to emulate Jackson’s tone or if he had to take on a part that wasn’t originally his

Heedo – Soloist – Back Door

I’ve been a fan of his for some years now so I’m happy that he got to come out and participate. This performance was really good and really complete, he’s a good rapper and his singing voice is really good too.

Jong Up – Soloist – Anyone

I never expected to see him come to a show like this. My friend, who likes him a lot, said he was doing fine on his own so she doesn’t understand why he came out like this and why he said that B.A.P wanted to come as group. Regardless of that, his performance was really good and it really is different to see a man, man, dancing.

Byeong Ju – Soloist – 4 Walls

Let me tell that this a hard song and he was really good. I don’t have a whole lot to say so yeah, amazing, loved it.

I hated how JTBC didn’t announce during the show which groups would be through, out of those who were on hold, and the soloists who would make it into team 24:00. “Go to the site”? You couldn’t have spared 10 minutes to announce that while the show was airing? A terrible move if you ask me. Either way, out of the 15 groups in the show, I’ll be watching these 7 more as we move forward, but who knows, it might change.

Compared to Boys Planet, I like this one more, as the nature of the show is to push already formed groups closer to their dream. Regardless of who wins, I hope they find success.

You can see this as a reversed version of usual appreciation posts where fans describe all the good and positive sites of their favourite idols. However, nobody in the world is perfect, am I right? And according to famous psychologist Carl Gustav Jung we should accept, embrace and bring to light all our negative and dark sites as well because they only become dangerous for us if they stay hidden within our souls. And to honour this great man I decided to bring to the light some of the more negative aspects of an idol's personality to appreciate them in a way.

Byun Baekhyun is a very talented and popular artist. He’s celebrated success as a member and vocal of EXO, same as in his solo career. He’s well respected and deserves to be admired by all means. However, nobody is perfect and the same applies to Baekhyun.

Many fans know about Baekhyun’s playfulness and high energy with which he approaches his life. Taken to extreme, he might become inconsistent and unpredictable which can be problematic when dealing with serious issues. Sometimes he can become irresponsible when the matter at hand doesn’t seem exciting enough for him. He can easily grow impatient and drop projects simply because he loses interest. Baekhyun is a positive person but he might have tendencies to carelessness and treating things lightly.

Baekhyun is known for being a ray of sunshine but sometimes he might slip into laziness when his tasks seem dull. He will avoid them and ignore them because he’s not interested and he will hope somebody else will take care of them. Even when initially enthusiastic and eager about something, he can lose the drive quickly sometimes when the project loses its charm to him. Anything that’s predictable and dull makes Baekhyun bored and uninterested. He doesn’t like to be part of the crowd when it comes to his style but at the same time he wants to be popular and loved by others which pushes him towards following the common taste. This disbalance and friction might make him feel guilty or ashamed whenever he gives in to the common taste. The fact he has tendencies towards materialism, wanting beautiful and trendy things, living a luxurious life, only make it more difficult for him to resist the temptation of following the crowd.

While Baekhyun can easily pick up on the moods of others and become a mood maker, his own feelings and emotions are way harder for him to read. He might have problems understanding himself which inevitably transfers into his impression that he’s actually misunderstood by others, that nobody can truly get what he thinks and feels. While he might not like to admit it, Baekhyun is very emotional and sometimes he might get blinded by his feelings and make haste decisions in the heat of the moment which he might regret later on. Sometimes he doesn’t think things through properly and get disappointed and frustrated when the outcome is not as he imagined. In general, Baekhyun has tendencies to fire up easily. He’s got quite a temper and can get infuriated when things are not going the way he wanted them to do. The fact he’s slightly confused by his own emotions and feelings can lead to struggling making decisions. If he’s not rushing into something due to his fiery mood, he can get stuck on one pesky issue for ages.

It’s no surprise that keeping up with Baekhyun can be difficult. He can act erratically and unpredictably, you never know what will catch his interest or upset him. Honestly, he doesn’t really know either most of the time. Baekhyun is living fast and he can get really irritated by people who take a long time to act or beat around the bush in discussion. He’s likely to prefer direct and plainly speaking people around him. It’s also safer that way because Baekhyun can suffer from fear of betrayal and honest people are less likely to lie to him or manipulate him. He’s a carefree person and will enjoy all the fun and sweetness of dating but can truly struggle to commit to a serious relationship due to his previously mentioned fear of betrayal. While Baekhyun loves a good heated dispute with his lover (or in general, really), sometimes he can slip into domestic strife and arguments which are way less fun. It can create a tense atmosphere, which is hard to get over for many days to come, especially because it feels uncomfortable and Baekhyun will prefer to ignore it rather than work on a solution.

Hear Me Out First Impression

I have a weird way of watching new EXO MVs, but I can’t break tradition, so I’ll commence with my usual word vomit.

Initial listen, no visual

Kyungsoo??? Ooh…Oh hell yeah, classic exo r&b. The instrumental sounds like Baby Come Back by Player, mixed with a deep feminine note to it? Ala Salt n Pepa or En Vogue. !!! SEHUN STARTS US OFF OH MY GOD CONGRATULATIONS BABY!! A STRAIGHT UP SC START UP OH MY GOD YES!!! HUSKY SUHO??? THIS TRACK IS GOING MAGICALLY! Ohh a baekhun duet into a soft jongdae chorus, this is fun! More rap??? Awww Jongiiiin! 😭 MINSEOK! Oh honey you’re killing it!!! Chanyeol gets a chorus!! Ksoo adlibs?? Where else are you honey? They DESERVE to lead a song, and exo as a group are more than capable of providing support.

Ack. I loved this. ☺️ The MV was wonderfully simplistic and heartwarming, and the song was great. Again showcasing the kind of r&b that I believe only EXO can do. It gives me very strong EXO SC vibes, and not just because they were used so much; the melody made me think of Telephone feat. 10cm. That’s not a criticism btw, I love that song, and I can still appreciate this one’s uniqueness. My only complaint is vocally I didn’t get enough Kyungsoo, but again, I’m not listening with an ideal medium. I’m so excited for the official comeback, but this was a great hold-over until it’s here. 🩵

I would love to hear your takes on how different groups/companies produce songs differently (or how they might be similar)!

there are definitely differences in terms of like what they mostly pay attention to in terms of the instruments used, vocal layering and arrangement and etc but i think in the end there are always gonna be similarities bc of how well... it's the kpop industry and companies will want to produce something that is trendy so i think in the end there's always a formula on how songs are made especially kpop songs i think there's a certain sound that kinda makes you go "oh this is kpop" and i am not talking about them singing in korean but rather the melodies that are used and etc but kpop as many people know it's not a genre of music in itself kpop is an industry bc, i am pretty sure this has been discussed and many people know, that there are many different genres in the kpop music like some groups do more edm, some do a more pop sound, some are more rnb or rock and etc i think you get where i am going with that!

(also side note i hate when i am looking for what the genre of a kpop song is and it simply says kpop and it's quite annoying) but anyways i think the differences start from there. but in terms of companies separately i have noticed a lot how songs from sm groups usually care a lot about vocal harmonies and there are many instances in songs where you can listen to harmonies in a song the example that comes to my mind is definitely exo's tempo bridge where that section is just harmonies and it's probably are very good harmony arrangement whoever came up with that deserves all the flowers and when people mention tempo i always think about that bridge it's very memorable!! also 127's superhuman intro is a good example too like the whole production of that song is still very insane to me! but in general i feel like sm tries very different types of music for their groups and they are not afraid to do so and i am pretty sure they work with a lot of producers internationally so that's why there's always something new they bring to the sound of a group and that's why most sm groups have something new and fresh every comeback but with that subtle sound the group is known for which is always very interesting to me as for jype... i think their songs for the groups in general are very performance driven if that makes sense like u can tell they were made to dance and perform in my opinion that's why there's just sections of songs where you have a part that spacious or with just the instrumental playing i am thinking about wannabe by itzy specifically but also likey by twice also has that type of instrumental built for a dance break and i think it's mostly bc their groups are groups that have a lot of focus on the performance aspect and end up making songs thinking of that specifically there's definitely nothing wrong with that honestly i think it's very interesting! not even sure if i want to talk about yge production bc... all i know of yge production is teddy and let me tell u.... he is genuinely needs to stop making the same sound or.... yge desperately needs to bring new people bc omg... i am not even gonna get into the whole bp think bc.... there's a lot but definitely it's sad how songs produced by their producers lack something interesting especially over the years they have been lacking something it's sad! idk much about treasures's and ikon's music but from what i know the members participate in their songs and honestly from what i heard from treasure's music... it's pretty good (going crazy soty) yeah but in general for the future they should start investing on getting new people to produce music for their groups bc atp the sound is becoming too similar and they need a new start! for hybe.... well this is complicated since hybe is a lot companies in one (😭) and there's not a way to really say what their production style is bc their individual companies have ways to do music differently even tho their producers appear in some of the groups music

Doyoung must be the most difficult person to be friends with, he's a one trick pony. There are times I feel like he must be the most difficult person in the group to get along with coz for him work comes first and he makes his relationship all abt the work and what others can do in the group.

He's the member who has had cold and standoffish periods with most of the 127 members (other than his 3 supporters taejaehyuck). He's even made his lovely mark stay away from him,and has had his brother asking him to get a hobby outside his work on camera.

Doyoung kept working on his career even during the pandemic and in GMs show he asked him to get another hobby outside his work related things, the boy learned Japanese and I think tried to improve dancing.

A while back taemin told the media he has fought with every single member of shinee and seulgi said the same abt fights within the band. fighting is normal but I've always felt doyoung forces the other person to see the side they might not want to see. He has habit of telling everyone their shortcomings and in work environment when ure giving Ur all u don't want to be told that u could do more. I've a feeling that makes him a tough person to love and be friends with.

Doyoung is lucky that he is so Ernst and honest that his bitchiness doesn't hurt his relationships in the long term. I seriously think mark was too tired to keep up with doyoung and this is why pulled himself out of the circle, jeno and Hyuck are too bratty to ever get irritated with his demands (they both do what they want to do but also look up to him enough to sometimes follow his advice).

Taeyong gets away with the judgemental attitude by pissing doyoung off and making him feel like do has won. Taeyong always gets what he wants but he makes doyoung give up on doyoungs terms. Jaehyun on the other hand lets him rant and does what he wants to and doyoung also just goes soft if Jaehyun shows his stubbornness (they both are two of the most stubborn ppl in 127)

Johndo is my favourite otp, not coz they look very good together (coz they do) but also there was a time when doyoung gave Johnny the time of the day. I've a feeling his work obsession made their relationship very strained, Johnny still wanted doyoung as a friend while do pushed him to the work colleague position. The same with yuta and doyoung, unlike Johnny yuta is not invested in anyone in the group as much so doyoung only being focused on work isn't an issue for him now.

Yuta being pushed to improve vocals helped yuta so he doesn't care if doyoung is just work focused,While Johnny wants to build a relationship out of work.

The last two years doyoung has been very vocal abt 127 not making it. I agree with him that 127 isn't as popular as exo in sk but how many bands are. He has forgotten that most K-pop fandom is international based now. Koreans want to be hip and not listen to their own music.

Sm groups never hit the general masses as it is as the music is usually too sm and not really targeting the General masses. Doyoung I think forgot this and him being in an experimental group doesn't help, this put a toll on him the most. Everyone talked abt personal achievements while doyoung discussed 127 even in the concert ments. The boy is more invested in his work then it's healthy and he makes the ppl around him hate him for his focus.

Him hugging every member wasn't an emotional hug but more a thankful hug, he really feels like they made it.

The crash after the concert I think was caused coZ of his stress over everything and his obsession with the concerts in Korea (ppl didn't like me saying this but he was so focused on his Korean concerts that he didn't even put any effort for his ifans in America, he was too idol in America and gave nothing of himself. Even his bubbles were for Koreans and insta was all for Koreans) made him have an emotional dip.

I'm really thankful doyoung has ppl like haechan, Jaehyunnie and Taeyong with him. They don't let him sink into the despair, they all push him to get up and be more human then just a machine.

That's an interesting topic you touched on.

People Doyoung works with (actors, staff, writers, stylists) not only subscribe to his IG, but even visit his concerts and write him letters. He is loved whenever he goes. However, a nicest person at the workplace can be a super hard person to live with in his home. Exactly because it's the only place where he can unwind, recharge, show negative emotions. The same traits (like diligence at work, perfectionism, input of ideas) that earn praise and respect in a working environment can be bothersome and irritating outside of working hours (stop talking about work! stop looking at your phone, pay attention to me!).

I said before that the closer you get to Doyoung the colder and harsher he becomes. He wouldn't be struggling with worries and bad moods, dissatisfaction if he were an optimistic, positive and shiny person in his core. He is cynical, he has ambitions, he hates to lose, he is very judgemental. Yes, he is very kind and righteous (fights for the right things, opposes the bad in the system), but it doesn't negate his other traits.

Talented and multifaceted people are difficult, they are not everyone's cup of tea, they are not "comfortable" or easygoing.

I should specify for readers that you mean "to be close friends". Doyoung is friendly and works towards supporting good working relationships. But it is hard to make him care not for the tribe, but for you only specifically. Jinyong wanted to stay friends with Doyoung after Inkigayo, to develop their relationship. Do declined. They are evidently still on good terms, support and greet each other, but they are not friends who meet once a month to drink soju or rant about life in chats.

Yuta and Jaehyun are friends, but it's been more than a year and they have never found time to go to Gojaedo(?) island. Meanwhile Haechan said "let's go, hyung" and in a few hours 2Dongs are in Jeju.

Doyoung critiques, he micromanages, he wants things his way, he makes you do extra work even at night (his messages about songs at 3 a.m.). I think he learnt not to demand from other members ("I'm just a working ant"). You can see it in the way he manages the voting and how members slacked with dancing/synchronisation and got away with it in the previous years. Doyoung isn't the leader, he isn't the boss, he isn't at his best all the time himself to have a higher ground, he can only work through coersion with everyone being as enthusiastic, on the same page as him. But it is a sacrifice to him. A control freak like him can't feel OK seeing how something isn't moving forward, thinking that the result isn't as good because there was "not enough effort". It ought to make him more irritable and less pleasing.

Sidenote. When neos discussed the voting for the songs in the groupchat, someone said that Taeil didn't send his opinion (as he usually switches off his phone and doesn't send pictures when asked). However, Doyoung instantly defended him, said Taeil was one of the few who responded to him. Positive reinforcement (you did good) with reprimand to others (you think others didn't work too, so you are excused, nope).

I get a feeling Doyoung likes others to be independant from him. He helps for a time, but then let you be. If Taeyong weren't as hardworking, didn't do everything for the team, Do wouldn't tolerate his clingy ass and baby him so much. Taeyong has the seal of approval, he can have his rest and cakes because he is so reliable and same-minded. He is Do's champion. But even Taeyong is pushed to go and rely on other friends. Doyoung is married to his job, a friend won't be more important (in normal circumstances, I'm not saying Doyoung won't drop everything in an emergency).

In short, if you aren't too close to Doyoung and don't depend on him emotionally, depend on his attention and focus, then he is great to be around (unless you get quickly irritated with micromanaging). But if you do want the attention, be special, you have to deal with stuff like him using the friendship rings to cover up his romantic relationship (Taeyong) or him declining a dinner with you because he is on a diet (Haechan). You also shouldn't argue with him on important things and tolerate him turning your own show into 127 ad show (Gongmyung). And give him attention when he wants it (long calls with Jeno).

Oasis: Day Ten (Continued)

There are hummingbirds flying around and pecking at the skylight. It seems they want very badly to do something; but the glass is preventing them. They’re making quite a ruckus. Cute little things. I hope they don’t hurt themselves.

It has been at least four hours and whatever was being broadcast is still going on. I cannot believe any one person could continue speaking for such a long time; it would wear out the vocal chords. Maybe they switched speakers and I didn’t realize it. Or, if he is as old as Sophia Kitchen says she and I are, then he might have more stamina than the average person. Is there something in the soil, perhaps, that makes the food grow so deliciously, the animals so intelligently, and the people so young? I wish I knew. It would be a remarkable advancement in science; if my concept of science exists any longer.

Oh, I could spend a lifetime studying this place. Hopefully, if everything goes well, I will have much longer than that.

Why did I write that? Do I know something that I’m keeping from myself? What’s happening to me?

Later…

I took a nap and woke up late in the evening. The talking has ceased. I called for Sophia and Kylie again, assuming they were home; they are not. I wonder what they’re doing.

With nightfall, the hummingbirds have been replaced by some other kind of nocturnal bird. There are also some large animals moving around in the trees above the skylight. I can’t see what they are because it’s too dark outside; I can hear them very clearly, though. My ears must be getting better.

Later…

It is morning. I am beginning to notice an aroma in this room; but I can’t tell what it is or where it’s coming from. The hummingbirds and woodpeckers are back at it again. There are more of them. I can get no respite. I do wish they would stop.

Oddly enough, I have not had to go outside to relieve myself in all this time; which is a good thing because this door still doesn’t want to open for me. It’s like the house wants to keep me inside.

Later…

The speeches have resumed at high noon; but with a different, distinctly lower-pitched voice. It’s so loud that it rattles the skylight. I would not want to be any closer than I already am to that voice. Likely it would burst my eardrums. Despite this, I still can’t tell what is being said. It’s a little irritating to me. But my, what a voice! I wish I had half his lung capacity.

My uncle George had a loud voice too, which makes sense because he was a professional singer. Restaurants would call him — usually very opulent ones — to go from table to table with either a guitarist or an accordion player from the same area, both of which he knew intimately. They would often go out to dinner together, to be the ones served instead of always serving others. They were very nice men, especially the accordion player. My grandmother and grandfather despised them for some reason which escapes me at the moment.

I wonder if they have accordion music here? Maybe the fact that I remembered accordions exist means they do. I would like to hear some, if I ever get out of this room and away from these birds.

The Great Produce 48 Rewatch: Ep 3, Signal Song Performance + Start of Challenge Mission 1

Hello lovelies! When we left off with my Ultra Super Duper important Produce48 Rewatch Project, we had finished the grade reassignments and I did some number crunching. Now we'll dive into choosing the center for Nekkoya (WHO COULD IT BE???) and the performance itself, as well as the beginning of the first challenge mission. Woot!

Ok, we’re about 19:30 into episode 3. The next portion of the episode deals with the girls’ huge performance on MNET. First, they gather as a group, and sweet vocal coach Soyou comes out to tell them that they’re going to choose the center for the performance.

If you’re newish to Kpop, it’s worth knowing that when people say “center,” they mean the person who stands in the center for a lot of the performance. For most kpop performances, the performers take turns standing in the center, and the “center” is just the person who usually begins and ends the performance in the middle, and/or takes center position at key points. A center is usually chosen for their looks, charisma, and dance ability. When people say someone just simply “is” the center of a group, they mean that this member tends to take center position for most of their performances. For example, Nayeon could be considered the “center” of Twice, Jungkook could be considered the “center” of BTS, Hyunjin is probably the “center” of Stray Kids, Kai is probably the “center” of Exo, and Irene is generally considered the “center” of Red Velvet.

In many cases, the other members of a group can absolutely steal focus from the center. Just think of Sana stealing focus in Twice’s performances of Cheer Up. In the case of this huge performance of Nekkoya, however, the center position is even more important, because during this performance, the girls never change position. The center is in the center the whole darn time. Also, as the show points out, the trainees who got the “center” position in the first two seasons of PD101 ended up debuting in the final lineup (though neither currently dominates the Kpop landscape -- Choi Yujeong is a member of the criminally underrated Weki Meki, and Lee Daehwi is a member of the not quite as underrated but still underrated AB6IX.) (Please note that this is also a WKMK stan account.)

Anyway.

How will the center be chosen for Nekkoya? By trainee vote! And the 14 members of Class A are each going to do a one minute performance to try to convince the other girls to vote for them as center.

We see Bae Eunyeong from Idol School -- the mint Chewing Gum girl -- saying that she’s taking the responsibility of choosing seriously since the person she vouches for will probably debut soon.

First, we see Lee Chaeyeon, future soloist. Kim Choyeon (fire eyes girl) is cheering for her, because apparently Chaeyeon helped all the A-class girls learn the dance, despite apparently being sick when they got to learn with the teacher! In other words, she learned the dance better from watching the video than they did from working with the teacher. That’s Chaeyeon for you. We see a few seconds of her dancing, and she does great, of course. She never had a chance, though, because her face is slightly imperfect. I mean, so's mine. So's everyone's. IDK.

Next is Kim Shihyeon, future Everglow member. She comes out in a gray “F-class” shirt, queueing a flashback to when she was on season one of PD101 and was placed initially in F.

She introduces herself as “Kim Shiyhyeon from class F” and then sings, very nicely, while dancing lightly. She sounds great, though we only hear a second or two. Also, live vocals don’t matter much for this particular performance. Still, I love that she went with what she had -- a pair of pipes and a great backstory.

Honda Hitomi dances energetically, adding a little cartwheel-flippy thing at the end.

Ko Yujin, the “Hyuna lookalike”, immediately drops into a split and does a bunch of other dance moves straight out of Roll Deep or something.

It’s all good, but it’s obviously the wrong vibe for the song, so I’m not sure if she actually though this would win her the vote or if she just wanted to show everyone what she was working with.

Little Kang Damin, future member of Queenzeye, does a pretty straightforward performance of the song, using a headset mic, singing and dancing. She says, “I want the center position if the opportunity is given.” I think she knows that she’s not likely to get it, not with both Gaeun and Sakura standing in line in front of her.

Damin’s labelmate, the flat tummied Hwang Soyeon, dances without singing, adding in a kind of weird windmill-of-arms at the end. I guess her enthusiasm carried her away.

Little Lee Haeun, the “mini-Chungha” girl, also does a pretty straightforward performance of the song, using a headset mic. And like Damin, she does a great job, likely knowing she won’t get chosen but just wanting to show her skills.

When Ah Yujin steps up, the editors play weird inspirational music, and splice in comments from other girls about how pretty Yujin is and how she would make a good center. We get a longish clip of her in the rehearsal space, totally overthinking what would make a good audition performance. I mean, most of the other girls are just literally performing the song that they are auditioning to be the center of, doing the moves that they will be doing as center. Just do that, Yujin, you silly goose.

We finally get to see her performance: she begins by saying “It’s dry in here. I hope to quench you all! Drink it up!” I had to pause the video because I cringed so hard I lost the use of my eyes and ears for a while. When I tuned back in, she was dancing -- what looked like original choreography -- and saying, in Japanese, “I love you all!” I’m obviously not the target market for this, because apparently at least some of the girls found this charming, and she got some votes.

Next up is THE SAKURA, who Kim Shihyeon says “is so pretty, she doesn’t even have to do anything.” But of course, she has done the most -- she changed the Korean lyrics to something befitting the moment. She’s worried she’ll mispronounce it and people won’t understand her “sincerity.” She lays out all these pieces of paper on the stage, then begins her performance. My Korean is pretty limited, but the show put her new lyrics up on screen, and I was able to use my translator app to find out that she’s singing, “It was hard, lonely days, but let’s get through it together.”

She does a perfectly adequate job of singing and dancing, then picks up her sign. It says “Center -- Nekkoya 🩷” (the center position is mine). It’s very slightly misspelled, which is kind of cute, as it shows that she did it by herself.

Last up -- that we see -- is Lee Gaeun, who sings and dances charmingly, adding in some Japanese at the end.

We don’t see any part of the performance of Kim Na Young (future Lightsum), Takahashi Juri (future Rocket Punch), Yabuki Nako (the one who moved up from F) or Na Go Eun (future Purple Kiss).

Soyou comes out to tell the girls that per the voting, there are only a few remaining candidates:

Lee Gaeun:

They appreciated that she spoke Japanese and liked her witty new lyrics.

And Sakura:

They appreciated how much effort she put into it.

Soyou reveals that actually, so far, they’re tied! So they need to have a final vote between the two.

In the end, Sakura wins. Gaeun smiles that cute anime smile of hers, and Sakura begins to cry.

Gaeun hugs her and says “congratulations” in Japanese to her. Sakura apologizes profusely, saying that Gaeun’s performance was much better than hers (I mean, it probably was) and Gaeun comforts her, still speaking Japanese. Of course, in being the kind of person who would tell Sakura that she, Sakura, is the perfect person for the center, Gaeun is just sort of proving that she herself is the perfect person to be center.

Everyone applauds and cries, including someone sitting in my chair. We hear Jo Yuri’s voice saying, “It warmed my heart. Even though they’re rivals, I could really feel that they’re already friends.” Kwon Eunbi says, “It didn’t seem to be about who won or lost. It was more like, ‘We won together.’” Choi Yena says, “I don’t know why, but I was happy. My heart grew that much bigger.” Sakura says, “I looked around and realized I had so many friends.”

To cut through the treacle, the always squinting Yu Minyoung (mint polka dots, fell from B to A) says, “I’m a little worried that people might only see Sakura. She’s so pretty, otoke?!?”

Time passes, and now it’s time to film the big Nekkoya performance, on the big diamond shaped stage.

Kim Da Hye asks Kim Cho Yeon and Goto Moe what their ending pose will be, then demonstrates her own -- a spot on impression of the classic out-of-breath, earnest smile you always see. It’s really funny, so check it out at about 34:30 in.

The A girls go up on stage, and the other girls are jealous, especially the ones who had been in A but were moved down. The girls in F are taking it hardest, because they’re not even allowed to go up on stage.

The other girls notice that gavely-voice Noe is starting to tear up, and they try to comfort her.

She interviews, “To be honest, I’m neither good at singing nor good at dancing. I couldn’t even be on stage.” Other girls are really sad, too.

A few of the girls -- I think it’s that YGK+ model Ahn Ye Won and the show's favorite punching bag Shin Suhyun -- call the other girls together, saying “no crying! Come here!” and they all end up doing a cheer together.

As it turns out, they’re dancing on the floor right in front of the stage, so they actually are kind of visible.

You can see the distribution of the groups -- the pink A girls are in the center, flanked by a stripe of orange B girls, with the yellow C girls and Green D girls at the corners and the back. Gotta say, I’d rather be that D girl in the left corner than the D girl all the way in the back.

On the day of the actual recording, they do one run-through, and the judges notice that they all look terrified instead of happy. (Soyou calls out Damin for always making the same cutesy face -- pretty funny.) The judges encourage them to show more cheerfulness in their performance, and they try again.

Their actual performance is a hit. At this point, I’m good not hearing the song again for a while, but here is the full length performance if you want to see it. It’s kind of interesting what happens -- Sakura is the center for the first part, and then the second half of the stage comes out and Gaeun is sort of the center for that group.

But as I think I said in my Boys Planet recaps, I never really understood the appeal of these super huge dance numbers. You can only see the people the cameraman and editors choose to show you. It might be different if you were there live...? I don't know. I understand that it's a tradition on these shows and all that, but it never really captures my interest.

Sakura interviews that if even one person hadn’t been on stage, it wouldn’t have been the same, that all of them came together to do the performance. Not sure how she’d know that if she has her back to literally all of them. But seriously, she really has the gift of diplomacy, doesn’t she?

When they’re done recording the performance, the girls are stunned to find out that finally they’ll be meeting the alleged host of the show, Lee Seungki! He comes out to strains of electric guitar and lots of applause. Future Kep1er’s Dayeon says, “He’s really handsome. Chincha chincha chincha chincha.” You could say that she really really likes him! Nomu nomu nomu nomu jowa!

Rocket Punch’s Juri and Purple Kiss’s Na Goeun like him too, so maybe liking Lee Seungki helps you debut!

They’re all looking at him kind of like this:

He tells them that he’s here to help and that they can talk to him any time. He says that he’s heard that they’ve worked really hard, but also that a few of them have given up and gone home. It must have been hard for them, he says, which is actually pretty kind. He tells them not to give up, and encourages them to keep their dream in mind. Whatever he says, it seems to really help them.

He says that he believes that an international powerhouse group will emerge from this show and take all of Asia by storm. They all cheer.

Challenge Mission 1 Begins: Group Battle Mission

At 43:40 we move on to the next part of the series: the first challenge mission.

The girls gather in the studio dressed in their class colors, and cheer loudly when Lee Seungki comes out to greet them.

Hwang Soyeon looks especially delighted.

Lee Seungki explains that their first challenge will be a group battle mission which will help decide if they stay or get eliminated. He tells them that they’ll be divided into 16 teams of 6, doing 8 different songs -- in other words, each song will be performed by two different teams, which will be each other’s rivals. Within each pairing, there will be one winning team and one losing team. Each member of the winning team will get 1000 bonus points, and only the top 58 ranked trainees will survive.

The trainees view the 1000 bonus points as a “free pass” to stay, but I wouldn’t really agree with them. It’s nice and all that, but knowing what I know about the vote totals in the first round, it would only make a difference to people who are *right* on the line -- between 58th and 61st place. If you were going to be in 62nd place or below, or 57th place or above, it wouldn’t matter at all.

So, sure, you want the 1000 points, but what you want more than that is to come off as especially winsome in the rehearsal footage. That’s how you win the attention of the National Producers. Ideally, you should be really pretty, at least moderately skilled, very hardworking, and extremely sweet to the other girls, but perhaps a little bit put upon or martyred.

The trainees can’t believe that almost half of them are going to be eliminated. Nakanishi Chiyori, from What’s Your Name?, interviews, “I felt as if someone was poking my heart with something sharp.” They’re all varying degrees of desperate to survive.

Naturally, the Korean trainees want a song in Korean, while the Japanese trainees would prefer a song in Japanese. And, though no one is saying it right now, probably none of them want to do Boombayah, a song with famously difficult choreography. None of the others come close. It’s like that time they had NCT-U’s Seventh Sense on a Produce101 season. It just filled the trainees’ hearts with dread.

Seungki explains that he’ll be choosing trainees at random to be team captains, and that those girls will get to choose the other members of her team.

But first, Sakura gets to choose her own team, because that’s how this show works. I’m lowkey surprised they didn’t just write “Sakura” on every ball and then choose her name at “random”.

Sakura chooses “Lee Chaeyeon-chan” first, surprising almost no one. Chaeyeon probably is the one who taught Sakura the choreo to Nekkoya, and her teaching skills alone would make her an extremely useful member of any team. Then Sakura chooses sweet-faced Motomura Aoi second, which surprises… everyone? I mean, that’s not who I’d choose if I had my choice of everyone. But they’re both on HKT48 so they’re probably friends. Then she calls for Kim Minju-chan, likely because (a) Minju is a Very Pretty Girl and fairly highly ranked and (b) maybe they met somewhere and got to be friendly? After all, she calls her -chan not -san, which is a friendly name tag. Then she calls for Kim Choyeon, who, from everything we can tell, is a really sweet girl, and a hard worker.

She also has amazing facial expressions.

Her last pick is Kwon Eunbi-chan, who is a solid choice. Both Choyeon and Eunbi probably cemented their spot by being friendly to Sakura when they were together in A class.

They stand together on stage and the Avengers theme song music plays. But I, an intellectual, know that often the *second* team picked is just as good, if not better, than the first.

Sakura has to then choose the name of the next team’s captain by picking a ball from the machine. Everyone wants to get picked, including a familiar face….

… but Sakura chooses An Yujin, future IVE member, instead of Huh Yunjin, future Le Sserafim member. Well, instead of everyone. And it’s totally random, right, MNET?

Yujin knows what’s up. So she chooses:

Na Goeun, future Purple Kiss

Jang Wonyoung, future Queen of all Kpop (and member of IVE)

Choi Yena, future soloist

Shiroma Miru, future visitor to Queendom Puzzle

Honda Hitomi, certified cutey-pie (but not shown in the screenshot)

Really, really strong team, in some ways stronger than the first team. To be fair, as much as I love Miru, I might have picked someone else, but Yujin was on B-team with Miru and they might have gotten really close.

She draws out Yabuki Nako’s name to be the next team captain, and holds the ball up straight to the camera like the commercial queen she is.

Does anyone else just want to buy pink ping pong balls now for some reason?

As a reminder, Yabuki Nako is the girl who moved from F class all the way up to A. From Nako onward, we don’t see who anyone picks, but we do see the next few team captains. Kojima Mako, Matsui Jurina, and Oda Erina. From there, things speed up. We see teams being picked and the ranks thinning out, until all that’s left is… the leftovers. (The reason I’m interested in the order that the captains get selected is that it gives us a sense of where a team fits in the hierarchy from AVENGERS at one end to LEFTOVERS at the other end.)

Team leftovers: Sato Minami, Chiba Erii, Asai Nanami, Asai Yuka, Kang Hyewon, and Han Chowon.

Poor Han Chowon, future member of Lightsum. For some reason she doesn’t get picked, despite being a member of B-class and having some obvious skills. It must have been galling to see people picking Ds and Fs ahead of her. Meanwhile, true to her basic lot in life, Miss Purity Kang Hye Won is like, “I wasn’t upset, but I didn’t know what to do.” Asai Yuka, who auditioned with Knock Knock, probably didn’t get picked because she’s only 14 and relatively inexperienced. It must have been so depressing and embarrassing, and as much as I kind of laugh at hopeless Hyewon, I feel sorry for all of them. Well, most of them.

Chiba Erii has prepared a brand new facial expression for the occasion. Totally different from the spaced out look she had in class, right? This one is like, 2% angrier.

I know I should be being nicer about it, but I find it really difficult to work up much sympathy for Chiba Erii. She strikes me as a girl who has always had an easy time in life because she’s pretty, and she expected that to continue. I'm probably being unfair, right? Sigh. Well, part of the point of these recaps is for me to mention my opinions, and that's one of them - that an accident of bone structure shouldn’t be an excuse to be unpleasant and dull.

Next, Lee Seungki tells them that the way they’ll be deciding who will get which song will be with a race. UGHH. They ran races on all four seasons of Produce101, and it’s always a mess. I get it that part of these shows is to just be fun, silly television for the viewers, but I don’t know, doesn’t it seem like a terrible idea? A bunch of extremely eager people placed into a situation in which they could easily harm themselves or others in their enthusiasm?

Produce X 101 was the last time they did the race, for the record. For Girls Planet 999, they did a challenge where they had to find each other’s baby photos, and for Boys Planet, they did it based on fancam views for the signal song performance. Either seems better than just like, who can run fastest.

Anyway, the girls discuss the songs that are right for them, and then the team captains line up for the race. (The teams can’t choose a runner -- the captain has to run.) There are two signs for each song on the far wall, but there is only one sign holder for each song, so the runners have to first grab the song they want then sprint back to the other side of the room to get that sign into the sign holder first in order to guarantee the choice.

I explained this song selection method to My Fella and he said, "Why don't they just put the song holders at the bottom of a deep swimming pool?" and I was like "I don't know why they're not at the heart of a volcano" and he was like "that's where they keep the signs themselves." We have fun, My Fella and me.

A few girls say that they have experience running track and field, including future IVE member Ahn Yujin, Kim Yubin, one of the CNC school girls, Lee Chaejung, future member of Alice, and Queen Jurina.

They run to the strains of “Chariots of Fire” and a lot of shrieking. Little Bibian looses a shoe. Looks like no one wants High Tension by AKB48, but fast runner Chaejung grabs Boombayah, and Hwang Soyeon grabs Like Ooh Ah. There’s a bit of a scuffle at the end, as Ahn Yujin and Kato Yuuka fight over who will really get Very Very Very, and Seungki has to come over to make the call: Ahn Yujin wins.

The winners get to choose which team they want to face off against -- and that team will have to do the same song. Jurina, whose team won Peekaboo by Red Velvet, chooses Kim Yubin’s team to be their rival, dashing Sakura’s hopes. Jurina is too smart to choose Sakura as a rival!

Lee Chaejeong, whose team is going to do Boombayah, gets to choose almost any team to go up against, and makes the strategic choice: the leftovers team. It’s a way of quite possibly guaranteeing success. As Won Soyeon puts it, “I feel bad, but… I don’t want to die.” This means that the least skilled team will be forced to do the most difficult song. Some of the girls on the leftovers team start to cry almost immediately -- pigtailed little Asai Yuka just buries her face in her hands and sobs, and Asai Nanami (Sailor Venus) interviews that for the first time, she just wants to go home -- and everyone feels awful.

I get it -- first no one chooses them to be in a team, and then they get chosen right away as the weakest rival to do the hardest song. It’s a one-two-three punch that had to really hurt.

Lee Seungki asks directly, “why are you crying?” and Erii answers just as directly, “We don’t think we can do it [perform Boombayah].”

Seungki kindly says, “In my experience, having the resolve to accomplish something will make people watching you feel touched by your determination. So having the resolve to be able to do it will touch the hearts of the National Producers. And nobody can predict the final outcome of that. So believe in yourself and be strong. I’ll have high hopes for all of you until the day that you turn those tears of sadness into tears of happiness.”

Aww! That’s some good stuff, Seungki.

Chiba Erii says, “ganbarimasu,” which is translated as “we’ll work hard” and is sort of the Japanese equivalent of “Fighting!” His words seem to cheer up the other girls, too, especially Hyewon.

The selections continue, in order I think of when the girls got their sign in the holder, until the very last team -- Ahn Yujin’s team -- gets stuck with the team no one wanted to face off against: Sakura’s team. Uh oh! This will be a tight race.

So, the teams have all been created and songs assigned. Now it’s time for the girls to start preparing! But that will have to wait for the next post!

here is a post documenting my favorite kpop songs of 2023~~ 💖 musically this year was AWESOME for me lol. my ears and my heart had so much fun.

내일의 우리 (ordinary days) - d.o. first things first, this man has the most gorgeous voice in the world, so i'm so happy whenever he gets a chance to croon and tell stories like this. this song is like warm tea (or a hot toddy at a friendly bar if you're into that sort of thing). this song is like finding comfort in skinned knees. this song has me WISTFUL

the view - d.o. this song makes me nostalgic for dreams that never came true tbh. the amount of dopamine that was woven into this song is insane. and kyungsoo’s vocals are so…so…SO beautiful.
