On Susie, the (Roaring) Knight, and the Angel

In a post of mine from less than a month after DR Chapter 2 came out, I compiled a list of details about Susie that seemed, for lack of a better word, sus. You can read the full thing here, but right now, I want to focus on one specific path of inquiry I went down there - really, just one line:

This is Susie's title as a party member in the time between her joining the party "for real" in Chapter 1 and her learning healing magic in Chapter 2.

I don't think I need to explain why seeing the narration - the game itself (or whoever the narrator is) - call Susie a Knight unprompted is concerning. However, I don't think it's evidence toward Susie being the Knight. What it means instead? Originally, I wasn't sure.

But I might have come up with an answer. Let me try and lay this out:

We know little about the Knight's motivation, but I believe we can at least be confident that they want to bring about the Roaring. After all, Queen introduces them as "The Roaring Knight", but is shortly after revealed to not know what the Roaring even is or entails. In my mind, the only reason she therefore would have called the Knight that is if they introduced themself with that title; and it would be weird for them to name themself after a calamity they don't intend to cause.

That being said, I think there's a likely secondary component to the Knight's motivations. I mean, the Roaring doesn't seem to be good for Darkners (who all turn to stone) or Lightners. So either the Knight just wants chaos (making them Jevil 2.0), or to have the Titans end the world because of nihilistic bullshit, or... there's something else we're missing.

Remember how Ralsei's initial prophecy describes the heroes saving the world(s) by "banish[ing] the Angel's Heaven"?

I think bringing about that Heaven is the Knight's true goal. That, whatever it is, the Knight believes it's worth bringing about the Roaring for.

Now, why is all this relevant?

Well, the Angel has been associated with light, both directly ("Let the Angel's power light your way." - Father Alvin) and via references to Heaven's light. So, if the Knight is in some way working on behalf of the Angel, then one could technically call them a "light knight".

And Susie? Susie's a dark knight.

Which is to say, it's my theory that Susie will be the one in most direct opposition to the Knight in the end, with the two potentially even being narrative foils to each other.

...That's where I was originally going to end this post. But then I started thinking more about the hints we've gotten about the Angel so far, and I remembered how Noelle, especially in the Snowgrave route, is associated with angelic motifs.

And then my brain hit on something, in the same vein of the dark knight / light knight dichotomy:

You know how Susie's signature move is Rude Buster, and one of her additional stats is Rudeness?

What would you say is the opposite of "rude"?

If that seems random and unrelated, consider this dialogue from Catti:

To be clear. This is not me saying Noelle is the (light/Roaring/Holy*) Knight... though, Queen certainly seems to think she has it in her to become such a Knight. And considering that she's almost the one who goes with Susie into the supply closet in Chapter 1, and then gets trapped in the library dark world, with the Knight potentially having waited in the closet for her (and Berdly)... one could argue that the Knight is taking a particular interest in her.

* I put "Holy" as an alt title for them because, ya know, angels are holy, and the fountain track being called "The Holy"... but now I can't help but think of the Christmas carol "O Holy (K)Night". Hmm.

But no, I don't think she's that Knight.

And this isn't meant to throw a wrench into Suselle endgame or anything. I dunno if it even means that Susie and Noelle will ever be pitted against each other.

But I do think it's a possibility. That Noelle, upon finding out about what the Angel's Heaven is, might be... let's say... swayed. Especially if she, say, loses a family member, and is told that it could bring him and/or her missing sister back. Especially, again, on Snowgrave.

Meanwhile, I know Susie would, despite what she said to Ralsei in Chapter 1, do anything to stop the Roaring from actually happening, simply because she cares so much about her friends, Lightners and Darkners, and, as I already said, the Roaring would be good for neither group.

But of course, Noelle is one of those friends too. And I don't think it's a given that Noelle would be so easily swayed either; even if she says that she isn't strong, and that she can't say no to most people, she proves by the end of Chapter 2 in the normal route that she has a strong will of her own (something that, again, Queen already recognized in her). I imagine that will of hers will only develop further as the game progresses. It'd take a lot to convince her, especially at such a later point of development, to be willing to doom the world.

So, really, I don't feel confident making any predictions about anything that might happen between her and Susie based on all this.

The "dark knight" / "light knight" thing, tho? That's gonna be something. Even if the game won't use the term "light knight" (cause it does sound kinda dumb).

Now, some of you might be wondering: what about Kris? Whether or not they're the Roaring Knight, which would complicate everything even further, they clearly have some knight coding, with their dark-world outfit and all. Not even just coding; their creation of a fountain at the end of Chapter 2 technically makes them a Knight. So, what kind of Knight are they?

Well. I have my own speculations, but I think it comes down to someone else. Especially if that someone - or something - else is, as some theorists have speculated, the true Angel.

(The SOUL. I'm talking about the SOUL.)

For now, Kris is a neutral party, caught between both worlds. We've seen them make at least one fountain now, but was it for the sake of helping bring about [[Heaven]] on Earth? Or do they have different, "darker" intentions?

What really is the ideological difference between "dark/rude" and "light/holy/polite" that this post has been circling around? It likely has to do with the overarching thematic tension in the game between chaos and order, freedom and control. But what does that actually mean?

What would it mean for Susie to be the Knight's true antithesis? If the Knight is acting in service of the Angel... then who - or what cause/oath - is Susie taking on the role of Knight for?

And if the dark and the light are truly opposites, then why does it take bringing about an overflow of darkness to fully realize the Angel's Heaven?

Questions for another time.

...though, as much as it pains me to say (/lh), Berdly may in fact have pointed us toward the answer to that last one:

I think the spamton sweepstakes might be the coolest thing I’ve ever been a part of. Watching the money roll in which slowly unlocked more and more items which unlocked more and more secrets, how accessible all the secrets actually were, I found everything but the ice palace secret (where you have to scroll through the ocean for a really long time) all on my own. It was clicking links. With one exception. Dess. When I actually came to the December page because I was putting in links, and I was like oh this is so cool, then I tried her nickname, Dess, and when you were met with a lone guitar, and when you clicked it it played a lost girl cover telling you to “find her”, it was so fucking cool, and I almost cried from it, that was when Dess became a character I genuinely wanted to find and protect with all my heart. The auction segment at the end was phenomenal too. The whole thing was an incredible experience.

Noelle probably would have been very young at the time and would have been absolutely terrified, and dess probably dared asriel to take kris back too his house and he did it purely because he didn't want them to just die

Deltarune: December Holiday

Hey! It's been a while huh? So, this post is mostly me talking about December Holiday, or Dess, I will also be discussing the person in the code, whether that's her, and if it IS her, what that means in the story of Deltarune.

Most of the stuff being said here has already been said by other people, but I felt like I needed to restate it for people who Arnt as deep in the rabbit hole as some of us, you know in order to give context and all that jazz.

I want you to keep in mind that since we are only 2 chapters in, this is uh, probably grossly inaccurate, we haven't ever heard her speak in person, and Toby could change all these details in the full release since he uh, kind of already made some changes between chapter 1 and chapter 2, such as the mercy bar, which makes sense, the game still isn't complete yet, so I think some of the finer details like game mechanics and even the person in the code should be taken with a grain of salt since it could change or be added on to at any time after all.

But uh, anyway, moving on to the content of this post!

What we know about December Holiday:

Dess is Noelle's older sister, and the eldest daughter of Rudy Holiday, we know she was friends with Asriel and Kris Dreemurr as well, and we also know she was quite protective of Noelle, she comforted her whenever she was scared, and often defended her from Kris's pranks, we also know she's around Asriel's age, so currently she would be around late teen years to early twenties considering Asriel is in college currently.

We also know that she was the one who got Noelle into scary movies meaning she was probably into them, the last and most important piece of information is that she is currently missing, we have no idea what happened to her, she seems to have gone missing years ago, but judging by the Spamton sweepstakes page being named "find her", it seems she's not dead, and that we are supposed to find her.

That's it, that's right, as you can see by the fact that we pretty much only have like 2 paragraphs of info about her, we know pretty much nothing about her personality other than that she liked scary movies, and was protective of her little sister, which pretty much says nothing about her.

The person in the code, and what it means if they are Dess:

In the days of chapter 1, people found unused text in the code, this wasn't unusual, there's loads of unused text in games, but what was unusual, was that this text was specifically labeled unused_0 through unused_9, meaning it specifically is supposed to be "unused" text that was deliberately left here for us, the text in chapter 1 goes as follows:

Then, in chapter 2 it was added on to:

What we can gather from these lines is that someone is all alone in a dark space, it seems to also be so quiet they aren't even sure they can hear themselves, at first, they seem desperate for anyone to answer their cries but by chapter 2 it seems they have accepted their predicament.

Now there's an obvious link here, this person is inside the code, in an unknown place, Dess, is currently in an unknown place, and despite years of searching, no one has found her, this means either 2 things, 1. She is presumed dead by the inhabitants of Hometown so the search was called off or never started in the first place, or 2. They tried to look for her, but couldn't find anything.

Both would make sense if she got Backroomed and is currently in the code, it's an inaccessible place to most people, so if they couldn't find her or presumed that she was dead because they couldn't find any trace of her, this seems feasible.

Now if this person in the code IS Dess, we have some new spoken lines directly from the person herself, now what does this mean? Absolutely nothing! Well… Nothing if you wanted to draw some sort of personality from these pieces of text, what I WILL discuss, however, is how these lines could recontextualize what happened to Dess and where she could currently be.

So, the observation I made, and one that I haven't seen a lot of other people make, is like, if she was trapped between the code for YEARS, why is she only speaking and asking for help now? Wouldn't she have been asking for help since the moment she entered that place? So, there are 2 possible solutions to this, I will discuss these now.

She just woke up, she may have been in this place for a while, but chapter 1 or a bit before chapter 1 is when she gained consciousness, this would mean that she was in a kind of coma or frozen state, I have no evidence for this, however, so it's merely speculation, but it would maybe imply that someone woke her upright as Kris and Susie started exploring dark worlds, and as soon as the player showed up, why might that be you ask? Probably because we're the only ones who can help her… Probably.

This is my personally favored one of the two I came up with, since it supports a theory I have (I may make a post about that in the future but I'm waiting for future chapters for more evidence), is that these lines of text aren't concurrently happening with the days the chapters take place in, we are merely RECEIVING them with every chapter release, this means these text could just be Dess in the past, and if so, is pretty dark, because it means that she's been trapped in a dark quiet place with no one around for YEARS, or maybe not, maybe someone found her there already, I mean if this is all taking place in the past and not concurrently, lots of things could have happened between then and now, this also means this text is from a younger Dess, which also means we have no idea what her current personality is, (Although we don't know young Dess's personality either lol) I also have no evidence for this one either.

If either of these is true, it means someone pulling the strings, someone either, A. Froze Dess in time for years and only released them now when they knew she could be rescued, or B. Someone is showing us past recordings of Dess's speech to try and help us find her or clue us into what happened to her after she disappeared.

Now to uh conclude this post, I would like to state, that this is just speculation/theory at best, any of these could be disproven, and you are welcome to believe whatever you want, we barely have any information on December Holiday, and the person in the code might not even be her, so take this all with a grain of salt anyway, have a great day, hopefully, I uh, work up the motivation to make some more posts, see Ya.

Now this was an interesting one! In all three cases I actually had a variety of potential ways to take them, and the third one especially tasked me with coming up with my own designs for Deltarune!Asriel and December "Dess" Holiday; in both cases I didn't want to get TOO into the weeds on them, but I'm decently happy with how they came out, and they do ultimately reflect the image I think of when I think of both characters.

Noelle finds out that there's a whole online community of people who find her relatable, a good chunk of them trans and neurodivergent

Noelle shone her flashlight down the deep, dark steps of the bunker in the woods, and took a deep breath.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Kris asked. "We don't know what's down there."

Noelle steeled herself. "If there's even a chance Dess is trapped here…we have to try, Kris."

Kris nodded, and the two of them began their descent into the earth. The stone beneath their feet eventually turned to metal, and the space opened up into a large room with lots of strange, blinking devices.

"What…is this?" Noelle asked softly.

Kris took a cautious step forward, looking around. "Seems like some kind of laboratory."

Noelle moved over to one of the machines, which had a big, wide screen, displaying…wait, no, that couldn't be right. "Is this Monster Tumblr?"

"What." Kris walked over to her and stared. "Wait, holy shit, it is. And are they talking about…us?"

"Noelle is so skrunkly I want to laminate her and keep her in my purse," Noelle read aloud. "That's, uh…"

Kris leaned forward and began scrolling down. "Noelle is just like me for real…Noelle is such prime blorbo material…"

"Blorbo?!" Noelle exclaimed.

"Here's a picture of a video game text box of you talking about how you want Susie to push you to the ground and laugh at you, captioned 'Naurrrrrrr girl' with a skull emoji…"

"Th-That never happened!"

"This one says, 'Noelle can commit a little murder as a treat. God forbid a woman do anything. Besides gamers aren't people she did nothing wrong.' " Kris turned to her. "You didn't kill anyone, right?"

"N-No! Why would they say that? Do they want me to kill people?"

"Sorta seems like it." Kris pointed at something and giggled. "Here, look, there's a drawing of you freezing Berdly in ice."

"That's horrible!"

"Come on, it's just a joke." Kris smiled. "You'd never actually do that. That's why it's funny."

Noelle looked away. "I guess."

Kris kept scrolling. "Oh, here — it looks like you got fourth place in the…'transfem swag' tournament on tumblr? Look at the comments: Noelle is such a trans icon, I want to steal Noelle's gender, Noelle has so much transgender swag it's insane…"

Noelle blinked. "I'm flattered, but, um. I'm not trans?"

"Too bad. You are now. The people said so."

"Who even are these people?!"

"Trust me, it's a compliment." Kris poked around a little bit more. "Oh, but look at this — I got second in the 'nonbinary swag' tournament. So basically I beat you."

"Yes?" Noelle stared at them. "Because you're actually nonbinary?"

"But it means I have more swag than you, Noelle."

"Okay, this is—" Noelle rolled her eyes. "This is nonsense. Let's not waste our time on weird, fake tumblr posts about us."

Kris stepped away from the screen. "You're just mad I have more swag than you."

NOELLE AND KRIS

okay so. i think i've mentioned this in other posts before, but the whole event that starts off everyone finding out dess and kris arent actually dead is that kris dives into a dark world! theyre trying to close a dark world like dess does, because they think that maybe!! that way!! dess will come back and be proud of them and love them and then she wont leave so much! because kris can close dark worlds too, see? now they can go with her!

they tell this to frisk, swear frisk to secrecy, and then! vanish lol they're Gone. the way dark worlds work here also isnt fully solid but im treating them sort of like mystery dungeons in pmd, so they dont fully follow the laws of like, physics and the like which means that even tho where kris lives is Very Far from hometown, noelle, susie, and ralsei are still able to get to the same dark world from hometown!

do not ask me what this dark world is like. i have No Idea. probably somewhat inspired by kris's life but i have not gone so far as to plot it out lol. the important part is that susie and ralsei split off from noelle (like in cyber city) and so noelle ends up running into kris, who has not only gotten lost but is in WAY over their head lol, so she saves them and kris begrudgingly agrees to stick with her. they totally couldve done this on their own. theyre sticking with noelle for her own safety. and noelle is just like yeah sure lol.

while traveling through the dark world together, noelle and kris have no idea who the other is! not only do they not really remember each other (noelle has a few vague memories, kris was even younger when dess took them so they dont remember anything at all), but they've both grown up a lot and in kris's case are fully presenting as a monster. they bond a bit over both being deer-monsters!

they cant fully communicate, tho...kris would be nonverbal throughout this entire trip and since noelle never grew up with kris she doesnt know monster sign language. she might remember a few words from her childhood but not enough to understand kris and even if she did she is a stranger so kris wouldnt sign OR speak to her anyways lol. but they do help each other out and close the dark world together! they come out in hometown and noelle promises to help kris find their parent cause they did Not mean to come here lol, and that is when! she checks her phone and shes gotten a text from toriel about a missing kid, and she's like....hey so uh i think your parent might actually be at my house lol wanna come by.

(while kris was stuck in the dark world, frisk got Very Worried and did eventually spill everything to chara, and thats how chara and frisk end up in hometown desperately trying to find kris! they come across toriel who helps them out and thats why they're at the holiday-dreemurr house).

and so things are all fun and fine until noelle and kris get back to noelle's house, and go inside, and kris is reunited with chara, and when that happens toriel sees this child and is like. holy shit. is that my dead kid.

and the fic would end there lol! (in my head this is a series, so, it would span multiple fics) another fun thing is this is the moment where noelle learns kris's name--so it wont really be a surprise for the audience cause i feel like most people could catch on that this is kris (remember up til this point we only follow noelle and the hometown crew, so we think dess and kris are dead), but if you didnt...

NOELLE AND DESS

honestly i dont know how noelle would react... i feel like she wouldnt have as big a response as everyone else! to her dess is less a person and more like, the story she's told as to why she cant do all the same things her peers do, why her mom + stepmom are so overprotective, why asriel stayed behind instead of going to college...dess loves noelle but noelle is like literally who are you. so when dess tries to like, bond with noelle, noelle doesnt want this...she grew up without a sister and that bond isnt going to form again! she doesnt know who this woman is!

its. very hard for dess needless to say. and for kris who sees how much dess is investing in noelle and theyre just like. okay well why was she never like that with me. which then leads to tensions between noelle and kris, which pushes kris to make some Very Bad Choices, and and and. plot <3

RALSEI AND SUSIE

actually the relationship ive thought about the least if im being honest. but i was talking about them to you last night and i think that like...there IS a level of antagonism that doesnt exist in deltarune canon. ralsei is trying to hard to stick to the prophecy, and when susie in this story's version of chapter one ignores it to be a villain with lancer, that hits A LOT HARDER in a world where from the very start the prophecy is being broken (since its two monsters who fall lol)

plus ralsei is also dealing with a lot of feelings shes never felt before--jealously, envy, not being able to just ignore her dysphoria anymore...shes a lot more aware of her crush on noelle and so noelle having a crush on susie isnt helping...

LIKE THEY ARE FRIENDS i think ralsei feels a LOT of guilt about all of this, and when its just her and susie things are good! they make sense!!! susie makes her wanna BE things wanna feel like maybe these things she feels are okay...but then everything always comes crashing down and its. bad again.

annnnnd thats all i think!! as always anybody can ask for follow ups. i'll spoil this entire au lol im sure things will change as i write it and besides. this is gonna take A While so when i do post it in like 2026 yall wont remember what i said here lol.

And anyways Im not linking the tumblr because I dont want to give them any kind of attention, but I wanted to talk about the posts themselves. Here’s your warning for some talk about terfs, alt-right, etc.

First I’ll address this person’s second point. And I’ll say yes. People who are on the far right, terfs, you name it, are still pagans, or Christians, or whatever spiritual path they choose to follow. Religion and spirituality, (and witchcraft to add that in for the sake of this argument), are inherently neutral things. They can be used to further good or to harm depending on the intent of the individual (or group).

And frankly it does no good to say “so-and-so isnt a real pagan/etc because xyz” because its almost a guarantee that they will turn and point at you with their own reasons why you arent the real one. (no true scotsman…).

What matters here is acknowledging that bad people and people with agendas will be in every group, even if by partaking they are being highly hypocritical. These things dont stop them from worshipping the gods, these things dont stop them from experiencing the gods or their own UPG.

What matters is that despite them being pagans it does NOT mean that they are free from the social consequences if they spout harmful beliefs or engage in harmful actions.

If a community deems your actions/beliefs as harmful, its within their right to exclude you to protect themselves. (And an aside, this is the internet. No one truly speaks for the whole, and with the amount of communities within communities within communities, you’ll find like-minded individuals eventually). But if youre so pressed to be a part of the “broader community,” perhaps its time to do some introspection and consider what it is about what youre doing that makes people unwilling to have you around.

If Jill starts talking shit every time she goes to the Sunday Night Sewing Group because she doesn’t like that Becca and Amy decided to go off-pattern, she shouldn’t be surprised if the group kicks her out because they didn’t want to deal with her toxic behavior.

And, look. I personally believe compassion and respect at an individual level is important to have for people, especially if youre trying to get through to them. But that doesnt mean those people are entitled to receive that from the whole group.

That brings me to address the first point. Im not even going to get into the transphobia part. This is where I laugh, because this person started their post like “I dont want to speak for the gods, but—”

Then DONT. Don’t speak for the gods. We can make inferences and form our own opinions based on the texts about them, but no one truly knows for certain what they feel.

All we know with even semi-certainty is the gods are often depicted as fickle, and that their stories were written down by humans and which change frequently over the ages. For all we know, the gods want the exact opposite of what we think. Its even bold to assume they would even care about anything humans do.

“Well I just think so-and-so deity wouldnt like this because theyre the god/dess of x and—”

No.

That’s your opinion, and youre applying it to a deity in order to validate your own beliefs, plain and simple.

Do not do this then complain that others do the same thing.

Do not use your opinion of a god’s feelings to justify treating other people badly.

Excerpt from my letter to Lisa

With YR S3 likely less than half a year away, I've started taking stock of my time in the fandom. Today I looked up the message I sent Lisa in the summer of 2022 (well before S2 and right after finishing my S1-compliant longfic) and decided to post an excerpt here for the sake of documentation.

It's in Swedish, and there are bound to be some grammatical mistakes and non-idiomatic expressions (although I did proofread it again just now). Yet I still quite like how it sums up some of my thoughts on the personal inspiration that I and so many other fanfic authors around the world had derived from S1.

Det som jag särskilt ville tacka dig för var att din serie har varit så otroligt inspirerande för mig. Som tonåring tyckte jag väldigt mycket om att skriva (både fanfic och originellt), men under tiden före Young Royals hade jag inte skrivit en enda kreativ text på cirka tretton år. Plugget och jobbet hade släckt den gnistan, men förra sommaren - då jag blev helt investerad i berättelsen och världen som du skapat och som de väldigt duktiga skådespelarna och hela den fantastiska teamen väckt till liv - så tändes den igen. Jag som inte ens lyckats skriva en drabble i över ett årtionde råkade skriva och komplettera en fic på mer än 230 tusen ord. En berättelse som jag en dag skulle kunna tänka mig att skriva om till nåt helt originellt, som folk gillade, som också gav mig väldigt mycket motivation för att fortsätta skriva. Det var verkligen fint att kunna skapa och utveckla en historia igen, och jag kommer alltid att minnas att det var just Young Royals som hjälpte mig att hitta den känslan igen ❤ Jag har funderat ganska mycket på varför det blev så. YR är otroligt duktigt skrivit med många välutvecklade karaktärer som man vill gärna skriva/läsa mer om, men det gäller också för många andra berättelser som jag har älskat under åren. Det måste alltså finnas nåt speciellt här och jag har landat på två svar. För det första så är det väldigt skönt och sällsynt att få höra författaren bakom originalverket uppmuntra fansen att skapa sina egna versioner och berättelser, rätt från början. Jag hoppas att du vet hur mycket vi uppskattar det! Och för det andra så finns det nåt i din berättelse och dess budskap som får folk att känna sig trygga i att utreda/behandla sin identitet och sina inre tankar just genom YR-fanfic. För mig var det min asexualitet, men jag tror nog att många av dem som skrivit om genus, sexualitet, ångest osv. kanske känner likadant. Och när man börjar skriva om nåt så personligt så blir det kanske lättare att hitta sin egen röst också. Jag är säker på att den inspiration du gett så många runtom världen också kommer att leda till helt fantastiska originalverk i framtiden Det är verkligen speciellt, det.

I have a lot more thoughts, on this as well as my other takeaways, but I can still stand behind what I wrote back then.
