Hello Yuletide writer! I love Yuletide every year, and I’m so happy you’re here, writing for me. I’m active here on tumblr, somewhat active on twitter, and I’m blithers on AO3.

Tale by the Rivershore (Webcomic)

Blanche, Merman

This little webcomic is so dang charming, and I’ve been enjoying reading the slowly-unfolding story all this year. If you haven’t seen it already, it’s a short read, still a WIP, and can be found on webtoons. I feel both platonic and gently shippy about the two main characters, so anything exploring that relationship in either direction, or where the story might conceivably go next, would be wonderful. One thing I enjoy about the comic is the combination of Blanche’s understated melancholy and ennui about her day-to-day life, contrasted with her refreshingly practical solutions to very unusual problems (housing a merman in her washing basin!), so anything more of her clever, pragmatic way of approaching life would be fantastic. How do Blanche and the merman learn to communicate with each other? Can they figure out how to communicate with gestures or words, or does the merman actually understand humans and isn’t sharing that knowledge yet (I feel like there’s a hint or two that might be the case).

Or what sort of cultural misunderstandings might arise as they do get to know each other? I love tropes where one character doesn’t realize what the action of another actually means - that they are being wooed in a way they don’t understand, or they don’t fully realize the gravity of something the other tells them. Any worldbuilding you might want to do around the merman, where he might be from or what his society is like, would be fun here. This story is so wide open, you could really take this request in a variety of ways, and I would be thrilled.

The Folk of the Air - Holly Black

Jude Duarte, Cardan Greenbriar

There’s such an intensity to their relationship - on Jude’s side, and especially on Cardan’s side - I would love to read so much more about these two. I’d absolutely love to read more about their wedding night: they got married, they are husband and wife now, and it happens so suddenly. It seems like they’d have so much to talk about, and a lot of heady feelings about belonging to another person that might bubble up in intense, possessive, strange sorts of ways - and that Cardan in particular must have been extremely pleased and triumphant that Jude accepted his proposal.

Or I’d love to read more about them making out/doing sexual stuff together while still hating each other (late first book/earlier second book-era), and it just keeps happening and they’re each other’s greatest allies but they also still don’t trust each other yet. What if they come to an arrangement where they decide that Jude will start sleeping in Cardan’s room to protect him from random assassination and seduction attempts in the middle of the night, post-Nicasia’s failed crossbow attempt? Or, I’d love to read more of Cardan corresponding with Jude while she’s in exile (and her actually receiving any letters he writes) - both of them working through their feelings and situation via letters and having what I can only assume is the equivalent of a horribly torrid already-married affair with words and lots of complicated emotions.

Run (TV 2020)

Billy Johnson, Ruby Richardson

I just flipped for the chemistry between the two leads in this show, and I’d love to read literally anything more for them. I (like many people, it seems) struggled with where the show eventually went, and how the first season ended before being cancelled - so, fix-it fic! You could tackle the first season cliffhanger-esque ending - for example, what if Billy and Ruby kept in touch after that, and continued their relationship or worked things out in their lives via texting or email before seeing each other again? I’d also love to read more of the relationship between Billy and Ruby as established in the first couple episodes without the thriller aspects that the show eventually pivoted to - just more of the two of them on a train, figuring out their past and future together, bantering and talking, perhaps having a lot of sex.

This show is also a perfect opportunity to go AU - for example, what about a soulmates or a soulbond universe (giving a lot of poignancy to their decision in college to break up, if they were soulmates), or a band AU (the reason they’re back together after years is for a reunion tour!). I’ll also note that there’s a lot of complicated stuff in the relationship between Billy and Ruby, and I’m comfortable with however you’re like to deal with Ruby’s infidelity, from outright ignoring it to grappling with it as the show itself does (although I’d prefer for infidelity to not be the entire focus of the fic, please). I’d also be perfectly thrilled with anything from a perfectly happy to bittersweet to a cuttingly sad ending for a story. I just really enjoy these two characters together, and I’d love to read anything more about them.

One Chance part 11

Jurdan College AU - previous chapter

*First of all, I want to apologize for being a day late. This week was a stressful week. but without further or do, I hope you guys enjoy!!! Let me know what you guys would like to see happen.*

Cardan had someone to drop his car off at the hospital so him and Jude could go back to their dorms. He pulled up in front of the hospital and the nurse brought Jude out in a wheelchair.

It was late afternoon, by now. They would have gotten to go home earlier but when Jude went to put on her clothes to go home in, she realized that they had to cut them off of her and so she had none.

Thank the heavens for Taryn. Taryn went to her dorm and picked a pair of joggers and a t-shirt out for her to wear.

When the nurse brought her to the car, Cardan got out to help her get in. He gently lifted her up and gently sat her in the passenger seat of the car. She still needed a little bit of help because she was quite sore.

Cardan thanked the nurses and got in the driver side of the car. He looked over at Jude and said, “You ready to go?”

Jude nodded her head.

Jude had this big fuzzy blanket all wrapped around her. She didn’t know if she liked it so well because it was fuzzy or because Cardan gave it to her. He went down earlier that day to the gift shop and got her a blanket.

Cardan could see Jude being very tense. Being in an accident (for the second time in her life) has made her very nervous with cars. The first time she was in an accident, it took her almost a whole year for her to begin to start being even a little comfortable in a car. But that was when her parents died also and she was young, about 7 years old.

Cardan grabbed her hand and started to rub circles on the back of it, in an attempt to calm her.

“It’s okay, Jude. I know you're a little nervous and weary because of what just happened but I’m not going to let anything happen to you, both of you.”

It made Jude’s chest warm and relax when he mentioned her and the baby. He really is happy, almost excited about being a dad.

To distract her from her nervousness, Cardan started talking about something else, “So do you want to stay in my dorm or me stay in your dorm or are you going to get someone to stay with you?”

“Umm I’m going to stay in my dorm, by myself, like I have been doing.”

Cardan sighed, “Jude, you can’t stay by yourself right now. You have to have someone with you.”

Jude started to get aggravated. “I’m a big girl, Cardan, I can stay by myself.”

“Jude, please stay with me. Until you get where you can start going to class again. I want to make sure you can get up easily, I want to make sure you eat enough, I just want to make sure you’re okay. It would help me sleep better at night.”

Instead of arguing, Jude said, “Fine, sure.” She knew he was doing this to be kind. He wanted to make sure they were both well and okay, and Jude knew that.

They did stop by Jude’s dorm and Cardan FaceTimed Jude on his phone and went into her dorm to get stuff she may need. With a bag packed, he went back to meet her in the car.

When he parked his car in front of his dormitory, he went around to help Jude onto her feet, made sure she was okay, and then grabbed her bag from the backseat.

They got into his dorm, and it is just like she remembers it, big. Much bigger than hers. Cardan showed her to his bedroom.

“So, um, this is where you can sleep. I’ll sleep on the couch.” Cardan said with a faint blush thinking about the morning he woke up to her in his bed.

“Oh no, Cardan, I’ll sleep on the couch. You can have your bed.”

He grabbed Jude’s chin between his fingers and said, “Jude you are getting the bed. If I didn’t want you to have the bed, I would have never invited you over.”

After those words, they stared into each other’s eyes. Jude wanted to kiss him so bad. Dang hormones. But then a silver lining was made in your eyes.

Cardan’s eyes soften, “Jude what’s wrong?”

She threw her arms around his neck and let the tears fall out, “It’s just your being a really good friend to me. And I’m probably being really stubborn and you don’t deserve that. Because you stayed with me at the hospital, you said you wanted to be apart of the baby’s life, and now you are allowing me to sleep in your really comfy bed and I-”

Cardan started to rub her back, “Jude, Jude, it’s okay. I know you're stubborn and I like you just the way you are.” He moves back to cup Jude’s face and wipe the tears with his thumbs.

Cardan leaned down and pressed a kiss to her cheek which Jude froze and Cardan could tell.

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have done that.” He said hesitantly.

“No it’s okay.” She gave him the same kiss on the cheek which made him grin. Dang, these hormones are making me feel weird about him, Jude thought.

After the peck on the cheek, Cardan grabbed her hand and brought her to the living room, to the couch. She sat on the couch and Cardan brought her her big fuzzy blanket which she immediately cuddled up in.

Cardan looked at her and asked, “What do you feel like eating for dinner? I can go pick up something or I can order pizza?”

“Oooo lets get pizza. I want pineapple and ham.”

Cardan made a scrunched up face at her, “You like pineapple on your pizza?”

“No I don’t, but that’s what I’m craving right now. Don’t ask why, I have no idea.”

Cardan laughed to himself and ordered pizza on his phone while Jude picked a movie for them to watch.

While Cardan waited for the pizza, Jude was still looking through movies to watch. Finally, she ended up picking divergent.

Her and Cardan sat on the couch together, both of them sitting with their feet propped on the table, and ate their pizza. In the middle of the second divergent movie, Jude began to get sleepy. Her head ended up laying on Cardan’s lap and she pulled her feet up to lay the length of the couch.

Cardan didn’t mind. He let her fall asleep on him until the movie was over. And then ever so gently, “Hey Jude, let’s go to bed.”

Jude looked at him through confused eyes. So Cardan had to repeat himself. Jude nodded her head and Cardan picked her up. He laid her in the bed with her fuzzy blanket. She was already fast asleep by the time Cardan left the room.

Cardan got a pillow and blanket and made to sleep on his couch for the night. Cardan couldn’t lie to himself, he was thoroughly enjoying Jude staying with him. Someone to care for. Someone to maybe love.

He woke up the next morning hearing retching sounds. He got up, went to his room, she wasn’t in bed. He went to the bathroom, and he found her body leaned over the toilet.

He quickly went and pulled her hair back and started to rub his hand up and down her spine.

“Cardan, leave. Don’t look at me like this.”

“Jude I’m here to help you. Besides, you wouldn’t be throwing up in my dorm room if it wasn’t for me so I don’t mind helping.”

When Jude was done throwing up, She laid in Cardan’s lap on the floor. He, again, was just rubbing her to calm her down. After a while Cardan picked her up and brought her to the couch.

She leaned against Cardan, shivering. Cardan gave her his blanket from the night before, but she still leaned against him.

“What would you like for breakfast?” Cardan said softly.

“I just threw up all that in there and you think I want to eat!” Jude was getting agitated.

“Jude, sweetheart, the doctor said you had to eat. Even if you don’t feel like it. Let’s try something easy like maybe some toast?”

Jude sat there and reminded herself that he was trying to do his best to take care of her when she obviously wasn’t going to take care of herself.

So Jude nodded. Soon Cardan brought her two pieces of toast with jelly on it. And it ended up being so good, she asked for more.

They didn’t have much planned today but lots of rest. When they were sitting there watching the office, Cardan spoke up.

“Jude, I wanted to say how sorry I am. I shouldn’t have let you go out into the main road. I’m sorry that you got hurt.”

“Oh no Cardan, this isn’t your fault. None of our faults. It’s that dimwit that wasn’t paying attention’s fault. You did absolutely nothing wrong.”

Jude could see the guilt in his dark eyes. The shame he still felt because of her getting hurt. That made Jude stomach get all fluttery inside. He cared about her. Generally cared for her sake.

They ended up spending time on the couch. Dozing off on each other. Jude slept the majority of the day because of her concussion that she’d gotten. And Cardan just quietly watched her sleep. She looked so at peace.

He woke her up to eat but rather than that she slept. This is how the next couple of weeks went. They stayed in and Cardan took care of her. Slowly, and I mean very slowly because of Cardan’s orders, they began to go for walks. And maybe go out to eat. Jude was feeling better everyday. She was gaining the weight she needed to. And their friendship was becoming stronger.

Cardan had feelings for her and it’s not just because of the baby. He really liked her. He wanted to be with her but he’s not sure Jude feels the same way. He doesn’t want to ruin the relationship he already has with her by admitting that to her.

Little did Cardan know, Jude was head over heels for him. She gets these little flutters in her chest and her heart starts to go up by just looking at him. But in her mind she thinks she can only be friends, right? She curses all the hormones that make her feel everything by tenfold.

But as for right now, she will bask in Cardan’s loving, tender care for as long as she can.

Balekin being creepy and maybe I ship it?!(idk I’m sorry!)

So Balekin has always noticed Jude, when she first sparred with and beat Cardan at the sword fighting thingy and then later when Cardan became king, at the prison. He is angry with her. He suspects shedunnit. She got him thrown in jail. He gets that Ludo dude to slap her, which is a jerk move. After she gets kidnapped and taken to the Undersea, though, and she is “glamoured”, he starts allowing himself to come on to her. Which is super creepy? My sis in law thinks he wasn’t being amorous, but I disagree! When she is stroking his arms covered in thorns, and his hair is swirling in the water, and he tells her to kiss him, there is NO REASON for him to ask her this. He just wants her to. So she shivers but kisses him quickly. Then he says

“KISS ME LIKE ONE OF YOUR FRENCH GIRLS, JACK” (kiss me as if I’m Cardan)

and I’m all, WHOA, back up, this guy knows she actually loves Cardan. He is glamouring her to treat him like her true love, to kiss him like her true love; this is a stalker-lover-who-knows-she-doesn’t-love-him-back-but-is-hypnotizing-her-to-kiss-him-like-she-does level of villainy. On the one hand he is acting realllllly creepy. On the other hand, it’s kinda hot. Hot in the Phantom of the Opera/Kylo Ren/ Loki fanfic kind of way. But it’s CANON.

Then he instructs her that, once she leaves the undersea, to come to his house as soon as possible. Then, he stops himself, he must flutter a handkerchief in her path as a codeword to come over, me mum’s not home. And then he gives her some new pearl earrings or a necklace? I forget which? But it obviously freaks Jude out. Afterward she even hates looking at the ocean, the smell... and she is so broken mentally and physically that she is behaving as if she was glamoured; she can’t be glamoured, but maybe she was a little seduced. In fact, she immediately is makin her way downtown to Balekin’s house the moment she can LEAP OUT OF HER FREAKING WINDOW(I’m coming my loooooooove) at Madoc’s house to run over there in nothing but a nightdress and then Balekin is so gleefully evil and like, “Could you be a dear and kill Cardan for me, my creature?” And she’s like, “Of course. If you’re a bird, I’m a bird.” and then I think they kiss again? Also, Jude may say that people look at her with disgust, but it’s all in her head; she imagines a lot, like how Cardan’s smile is always so “cruel” when he’s just smiling cuz he’s an awkward doof.

Also I was shipping this creepy couple right up until Balekin’s like “Twas the girl! She poisoned him!” And Jude’s like “u wot m8″ and Cardan’s like “Don’t order her around, that’s my job” and Jude’s like “darn tootin’!”

...but with all this in mind, supposing Jude was feeling like he was seducing her and she had to pretend to go along with it, since she didn’t really consent, it’s all very rapey and that’s probably why she actually killed Balekin. If she’s disgusted by the smell of the sea, it probably reminds her of his lips, and that would make me shiver, too. I’m just not sure if I like it or not. I think I do. Help.

(I mean I know cardan is the better guy in this situation also balekin is like so much older than Jude but dang those kisses were pretty cute)

The Cruel Prince First Thoughts

The idea to kind of write down my thoughts as I was reading The Cruel Prince came to me while I was halfway through the book, so hopefully my thoughts from the first half aren't too jumbled or out of order. I'm trying not to be super spoilery for people who might be interested in reading the books later... cough cough.. you know who you are

• This was a brutal way to start a book

• So I know a lot of people ship Jude and Cardan and I can totally see why, but I'm not sure I'm fully on board with it yet

• I wanna say I like Locke but I don't trust him.. like what are his motives? 👀

• Yasss Jude has got some guts. We like.

• Jude reads the note as Cardan really hating her but maybe its more like he's really obsessed with her? Idk... maybe I'd feel different if i didnt know ppl shipped them

• Dang Valerian is wild to come in her window like that

• Also what is Valerian's problem exactly???

• Ooop. Well if Dain was upset earlier he's really gonna be upset now

• SEVERIN AND BEN AAAAAAAAAA

• Hmmmm seems like I was right not to trust Locke. What is this nonsense he's spewing? Is he Taryn's boyfriend cause oooh I'm gonna be mad
