There are many things I will never forgive Rick Riordan for but the number 1 (one) thing I will always hold against him is how he treated WWII in the entire series.
To quote the PJO wiki, "[...] World War II, in the books, is described to be a huge fight between the children of Zeus and Poseidon on one side and the children of Hades on the other.
The events of World War II resulted in the pact of the Big Three, because their children were affecting the course of history too much. It was decided more demigod children would be dangerous for the mortal world."
Just. What the fuck. There are so many things that are wrong with this.
There is nothing that he can do to excuse or salvage this. He could rewrite the whole series, I don't give a fuck. This should not have happened in the first place.
I don't care if he wrote the first book in 2005, he was and still is a grown ass man with a high education from what I've read, he has no excuse. WWII has affected millions across the globe with the descendants of all too many families even having to deal with the generational trauma that came from that time period alone AND dealing with heavy deniers of the many atrocities and war crimes that were committed whilst their grandparents and great-grandparents are having hallucinations of all of their traumatic experiences (can you tell i'm speaking from experience?).
Ironically he holds (Ancient) Greece on such a high pedestal, calling it the birthplace of Western Civilisation (it isn't), and yet you can tell he obviously knows very little about the damn country whose culture he's been appropreating for almost two decades now. Making Hades the father of 3 (three) terrible war criminals in the war that, you know, Greece had been and still is greatly affected by to this day. Which is, you know, his fucking home. That he and all the other characters supposedly care about oh so much (I have so many bottled-up negative emotions about these books and absolutely no safe space to let them out, theitsa, you have no idea).
You may think I'm overreacting or taking this too seriously but I honestly couldn't care less. This is not a topic you can just joke about or treat light-heartedly. Yes, it was mentioned as an atrocity in the books, but it was still mainly treated as just "Hehe silly fight between gods! Secret History ooo!~".
Simply saying that WWII was bad is not enough, Rick, it's actually the bare minimum. You need to show it at the very least some respect by not undermining its consequences to simply "This is why we don't have kids anymore!". But you're obviously not ready to hear that yet. It still baffles me that his fans are just now discovering he is not the saint they thought he was. "How could he be a zionist ??" they all ask in unison, meanwhile the signs were all there since 2005 (at the very least).
Anyway, you don't have to answer this ask if you don't feel like it, I understand it can possibly be overwhelming. You're the first person I've seen that's actually not afraid to point out Rick's bullshit despite initially liking his books, and also the fact that you are a Greek educating people on actual Greek culture, so I felt safe sharing my thoughts with you. Thank you for your time! Καλές γιορτές! 💕
You're overreacting, especially when it comes to the World Wars! In ww2 1 in 10 Greeks died in the famine, and almost everyone I know had someone in their family executed or tortured by the Germans/Bulgarians/Italians triple occupation (not to mention getting hurt or killed in battle). These situations traumatized generations of Greeks, but Rick had the immense privilege of not considering this while writing! He treated the wars like they were play-dough for his little cutsy lore, he made our arch-enemies the children of our gods, and he can go to hell for this.
I am here for all the righteous Greek αλάτι, so if you have more thoughts, bring it on!

 Twins Karl and Robert Oelbermann
1896 – Robert Oelbermann, German youth leader. (d.1941) In 1919 Robert and his twin brother Karl founded the Nerother Bund youth group in the Cologne region. Like other German youth groups, it aimed to bring youth closer to nature through camping and hiking. Homosexual relationships sometimes developed from the intense adolescent male camaraderie, and the Nerother Bund accepted these friendships, as did a number of German youth groups at the time.
Soon after the Nazis took power in 1933, they dissolved all independent youth groups and urged the members to join the Hitler Youth movement. Robert refused and secretly continued his connection with the Nerother Bund. In 1936 he was convicted under the Nazi-revised criminal code's Paragraph 175 which outlawed homosexuality. Robert was imprisoned with 13 other members of the Nerother Bund.
Robert was one of more than 50,000 men sentenced under Paragraph 175 during the Nazi regime. By 1941 he had been transferred to the Dachau concentration camp. Like many "175ers" in the camps, Robert was required to wear an identifying pink triangle. The "175ers" were commonly segregated in separate barracks, subjected to particularly harsh treatment, and often ostracized by other prisoner groups.
Forty-four-year-old Robert died at Dachau in 1941.

1951 – John Edward Heys is an American independent filmmaker, actor and writer who lives and works in Berlin.
John Edward Heys was born and raised in New Jersey. Upon his father's death two days after Heys' 12th birthday, he was enrolled and educated at a private boarding school in northern New Jersey. Upon graduating from secondary school, Heys moved to Miami Shores, Florida, to the home of his maternal aunts.
After two semesters of college majoring in Liberal Arts, Heys moved to New York City in 1968 and became part of the East Village and West Village alternative life and LGBTQ culture.
In August 1969, he founded America's first bi-monthly newspaper for the LGBTQ community, Gay Power, the official title totaling 24 issues and was editor until August 1970. One of its covers was created by Robert Mapplethorpe. The newspaper also contained illustrations by Touko Laaksonen, better known as Tom of Finland, as well as regular contributors as Arthur Bell, Taylor Mead, Charles Ludlam, Pudgy Roberts, Bill Vehr, Pat Maxwell, Clayton Cole and regular columns from all of the active LGBSTG groups, from the most conservative Mattachine Society to the most radical The Gay Liberation Front, and all the other groups in between.
Heys created several one-man performance pieces and he acted with Cookie Mueller, H.M. Koutoukas, Charles Ludlam, Ethyl Eichelberger and as part of the Angels of Light NYC Group which Hibiscus founded after moving to NYC.
Heys was a subject for the artists Peter Hujar, Francesco Clemente, Charles Ludlam, Richard Banks, Frank Moore and numerous other photographers. Heys was a close friend & muse of the photographer Peter Hujar and subject of many portraits. Hujar once remarked upon Heys' resemblance to Diana Vreeland, stating that, "I can take a picture of her and another of you and there is a resemblance".
In Berlin he was a friend of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, the Neue Deutsche Welle (new-wave) band Die Tödliche Doris and to the radical gay-activist Napoleon Seyfarth. Heys made two films of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, one of Napoleon Seyfarth, and was the subject of an 8 mm short film which Wolfgang Mueller made in 1984 in the legendary 1930's bordello, Pensione Florian.
Heys' films have been screened at many worldwide film festivals.

1952 – Jean-Paul Gaultier's clothes have both influenced fashions in the clubs and on the streets and have also appropriated ideas from those sources. Since his early shows Gaultier has drawn upon street styles and club culture for his haute couture creations.
A frequenter of gay clubs in London, he typically incorporates elements of gay style into his collections. His 1996 Pin Up Boys collection, for example, drew upon the sailor as a gay icon and presented figure-hugging pink and blue Tom of Finland style outfits.
Born in Arcueil, France, Gaultier was an only child. The future designer was greatly influenced by his grandmother, Marie Garrabe, a hypnotist and practitioner of alternative healing who encouraged him to pursue the unmanly pastimes of sketching and costume making.
Gaultier first realized the impact of his sketches when he was punished by his school teacher for drawing Folies Bergère showgirls. He was made to walk around school with the drawing pinned to his back. The punishment, however, only made the young Gaultier aware of his potential for showmanship.
Gaultier had no formal fashion training. Instead, he sent hundreds of his sketches to various couture houses. Pierre Cardin was impressed by the work and hired Gaultier as a design assistant in 1970, on the young man's eighteenth birthday. Gaultier worked for a number of other French design houses before launching his first collection under his own name in 1976.
However, it was not until 1981, when Gaultier began reflecting and adapting with his own inimitable touch key strands of London's youth subcultures, that his talent was established and his reputation as the enfant terrible of the fashion world was consolidated.
In addition to producing groundbreaking and outrageous clothes for his highly theatrical fashion shows, presented by unconventional models (transvestites, old and fat women, tattooed and pierced youngsters), he also launched cheaper diffusion ranges—Junior Gaultier (in 1988), Gaultier Jeans (in 1993), and JPG (in 1994).
In his designs, Gaultier toys with notions of masculinity and the appropriate forms of dress for men to wear. In 1985 he created his first skirt for men. While it did not create a major impact, it had some effect, as fashionable young gay men were seen in the clubs of London and Paris wearing skirts.
For his Autumn/Winter 1988 collection Gaultier again attempted to create a skirt for men; and in 1993, responding to the popularity of kilts amongst gay men on the streets of London and New York, his Vikings collection included his reinvention of the skirt for men in the form of the kilt.
Gaultier has utilized his distinctive appearance, especially his bleached blond hair and blue and white striped matelot T-shirt, as a fashion statement in its own right. When he launched his men's fragrance in 1995, it was in a male torso bottle that was striped to imitate his signature T-shirt.
At the end of the 1980s, Gaultier suffered several reverses, including most painfully the loss, from an AIDS-related illness, of his lover and business partner of fifteen years, Francis Menuge.
But in 1990 he returned to the forefront of fashion by creating the now infamous corset and other stage costumes for Madonna's Blond Ambition tour. "I love Madonna. That was one of the best times of my career," he told the London Observer newspaper in 1997.
The designer lives in Paris, where his business is headquartered, but also spends time in Italy, where his clothes are manufactured.

1958 – Born: Brian Paddick, Baron Paddick of Brixton, British politician, and Liberal Democrat candidate for the London mayoral election, 2008, coming third behind Boris Johnson and Ken Livingstone. He was, until his retirement in May 2007, Deputy Assistant Commissioner in London's Metropolitan Police Service and the United Kingdom's most senior openly gay police officer.
Paddick was educated at Sutton Grammar School, Sutton then went on to study at Queen's College, Oxford (BA), the University of Warwick (MBA), and the University of Cambridge (Postgraduate Diploma in Criminology). When he was at Oxford, he was Captain of the University Swimming Team and Vice-Captain of his college's Rugby team.
Paddick was a sergeant on the front line during the 1981 Brixton riots, an experience which undoubtedly shaped his attitudes about confrontational police action and strengthened his belief in community policing. He was later in charge of CID at Notting Hill and responsible for policing the Notting Hill Carnival. He was promoted to commander in December 2000, and fulfilled his ambition of becoming head of policing in Brixton.
In November 2003 Paddick was promoted to Deputy Assistant Commissioner, and in April 2005 he took over management of Territorial Policing across all 32 London Boroughs, with responsibility for 20,000 police officers and support staff. He was accountable for reducing 'volume crime' in London (all offences up to and including rape in terms of seriousness) and increasing the number of offenders brought to justice. He was the national lead for the police service on disability and mental health issues for a year and a half. He was also in the media spotlight as the senior Metropolitan Police Service spokesman for the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales and after the 7 July 2005 London bombings.
Following a widely-publicised disagreement with Sir Ian Blair, the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, over the wrongful shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes at Stockwell Tube station on 22 July 2005, Paddick was assigned the position of group director of information management, which he considered a 'non-job'. Claiming that the Home Office had intervened for political reasons to ensure that Blair would not have to resign over the incident as it had occurred in the aftermath of 21 July 2005 London bombings, Paddick says he came to accept that his police career was over and that he would never achieve his goal of becoming a chief constable.
Between 1983 and 1988, Paddick was married. According to Paddick, it was 'a fairly conventional marriage' and his former wife said it was 'a wonderful marriage'. She did not know he was gay. He struggled with his sexuality until towards the end of his marriage in 1988. Since then he has been a vocal and visible advocate for gay rights and diversity.
He had a knack during his police career of attracting controversy over his policies, outspokenness and his sexuality but this seems to have done him no harm and has given him much credibility and popularity in his post-police political career, as he seems to a confident and charming man of integrity. Being somewhat handsome has probably not hurt either.
Paddick was a contestant on the eighth series of the ITV1 reality television show I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! in 2008. On 1 December 2008, he became the sixth celebrity to be voted off the show. Interviewed by the show's hosts Ant & Dec after leaving the jungle, he explained his reasons for participating:
"For a long time I've been doing serious stuff. Thirty years in the police and running for mayor. It's all bad news that they want me to comment on. So I thought why not come and do something trivial ... It's the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, anything after this is a breeze."
In 2008, Paddick was ranked number 101 in the annual Pink List of influential gay and lesbian people in Britain published by The Independent on Sunday, down from number 83 in 2007.
Paddick presently lives in Vauxhall, London, with his husband Petter Belsvik, a civil engineer from Oslo, Norway; they met in a bar while on holiday in Ibiza. They married in Oslo 9 January 2009.
It was announced that he would be elevated to the House of Lords in August 2013. He was created a life peer on 12 September 2013 taking the title Baron Paddick, of Brixton in the London Borough of Lambeth.

the thing is transabled people dont usually have BIID or something, and instead tend to just outright encourage faking a disorder. they tell "transautistics" to fake having social issues and such, to not talk and fake being nonverbal (there is a huge difference between nonverbal and choosing not to talk).
the same group also advocates for blackface and cultural appropration
its all based on stereotypes, and while being a stereotype itself is not bad, when you are using it to pretend to be a group you are not apart of, its offensive to those of us who are stereotypes!
That's why I said I think it'd be cool for people with BIID to reclaim it. It was coined by someone with BIID, for people with BIID to use, so they had another option that wasn't medicalized and focused on suffering. It seems a shame that this word's history is obscured now, and that people with BIID seem expected to emphasize being a medical disorder rather than having the option to take on a less medicalized identity. I've had some people with BIID send me asks thanking me for another post I made on this because they identify as transabled/don't like the disorder-focused way of talking about BIID and were happy to seeing it discussed outside of that medicalized model, so I really think it's worth discussing the origins of the term as a BIID identity.
(Also, people have discussed before how many people who use labels like transautistic are actually neurodivergent people who don't feel like they can call themselves autistic because of internalized ableism, so I'd like to extend compassion to them. From what I've seen that transabled community seems overwhelming really young?)

Im so glad you agree kn the witch situation i didnt want to offend anyone cause you can never be sure i had someone block me previously lol but what a hoax/scam this is also i bet there is alot of culturual appropration going on in these sessions especially when a white woman is involved (sorry but this is true like 9/10) i cant believe andrews friends dont like her too thats a serious red flag
Honey, I also very much doubt that there is no cultural appropriation in the middle of this high-class charlatanism. Their friends being averse to this relationship shows that they also have a lot of mistrust about her character and her intentions with him. A big, waving red flag.

Besides jjk, what other media do you like?
Hm, if we're talking about completely different media (not manga, I mean), I'm a pretty big fan of the Warhammer novels, especially Warhammer 40k. I like the universe overall, but I haven't played the ttrpg yet, only watched a match when I was very young, and I still couldn't bring myself to spend loads of money on figures and painting kits....so novels it is. But there's great stuff there, so I'm not complaining in the slightest.
Warhammer has a pretty divisive reputation, in part deserved, but by having Adeptus Mechanicus (ultra-religious cyborgs) and Necrons (pseudo-ancient egyptian space robots) be my favourite sections and avoiding anything Space Marine and Horus Heresy (most popular novel series), I seemed to have dodged the most toxic parts. There are actually parts that I would say are really progressive. It's certainly the only time I've read a novel (Imperator: Wrath of the Omnissiah) with a genderless mc that uses neopronouns and where the story doesn't focus on ver gender/identity.
I just really like how versatile the universe is. Sci-fi with prominent horror elements and an abundance of species and societies, where you can tell basically every kind of story you could think of. The epic battles against Tyranids (space locusts) or Orcs are most commonly known, but you can also have stories about your average citizen in a hive city or some Mechanicus researcher on some far off planet. Stories about non-humans are thankfully also getting more numberous. Recently there was a great book series about Necrons that explored their origins and culture and likened their forceful transformation from humanoids to robots to dysphoria, which was really interesting (there are also actual trans people, a trans woman and a nonbinary person).
What I especially appreciate about Adeptus Mechanicus in particular is that I have an abundance of mad scientist stories, that not only feature the appropreate amount of horror, but also lack tedious romantic subplots (most Warhammer stories do) and also talk about neurodivergency, their negative perception and oppression by the Imperium ("regular humans") and a bunch of gender fuckery. You have vaguely humanoid shaped piles of walking metal with deep booming voices, who use she/her pronouns and everyone roles with it because who would dare to question her? Or there's one Mechanicus ambassador to the Imperium, who used technology to have the appearance of a young attractive man because that makes negotiations easier. We don't know what the ambassador used to look like and it's never considered important. Or a tech priest who gave himself the voice of his favourite opera singer. A tech priestess who made herself an armour with boobs and wide hips. While others might choose to become nothing more than a brain in a tank, she chooses to project femininity and we never find out what she looks like underneath because how she wants to be perceived is more important. I just really like that diversity.
But unfortunately, not everyone sees it that way and the most loud and notorious fans are the ones who live out their white supremacy wet dreams through the Imprium and particularly Space Marines, not realizing that worshipping and dying for a corpse is actually a bad thing. Having an inquisition, that functions as a xenophobic thought police isn't something you should strive towards. But power suits cool, so....
You actually see this big divide in the book reviews. For example, I have read pretty much all Titans (big robots you can pilot but that have their own feral consciousness, kinda like Eva) novels currently out and the majority of them have female leads, prominent female characters or just female pilots in general. It's not a big deal and I never see anyone comment on it in reviews. Then we got a Horus Heresy novel focused on Titans and the Warhammer bros went apeshit because the main characters are a squad of all-women pilots. Calling it man-hating and toxic feminism and all that. To be fair, single-gender pilot squats are pretty rare, I never encountered them before, but it's just one, kinda culty, group of a mother and her daughters (not all biological). And it's really just the pilots who are women. Those Titans, especially the bigger ones, have an entire crew inside for maintenance, assistance, mechanics etc. and those people have all kinds of genders. They also never say they hate men, it's just a tradition. One woman hates one particular man, but that's because he's her ex. Nothing dramatic. But of course those fans don't care. I'm just glad they apparently aren't reading the other novels.
So yeah, bit controversial, but I've read a lot of great Warhammer novels and trans people being Warhammer fans is by now a bit of a meme. I actually had a few dates that started out as "holy shit, another trans person that's into Warhammer!" Quite funny.

you might've talked about this before, but I can't find it. out of curiosity, what makes azarath approprative?
im not sure if i have but, i mean. raven's original design contains some hindu imagery/fashion but she's not indian or hindu. i'm not sure if it's all of azarath (raven's mom in the comics does not have a bindi, though she does in the cartoon) or if it's just raven.
raven's indian influences are definitely because her 80s comic design is based off of an indian actress (persis khambatta) but that was not very consistent (i think george perez even said he changed his mind and also based her design off a white actress) and she's been made whiter and whiter ever since. i don't think she's drawn wearing a sari anymore and it doesn't seem like the bindi is included in her design that much anymore eitiher? not 100% sure about that
anyway i really dont know if its azarath as a whole or just raven's original design. i dont think i remember enough about azarathian culture nor do i know enough about hindu culture to fully compare. but the influence is noticeable
i would still really like to see an indian raven (tho i loved native american raven in tt:eo, obvi thats not the same lol) but like i said she keeps getting designed whiter and younger and more basic mall goth so i doubt we'll get any good designs for her anytime soon

Rant post:
I'm really tired of the mainstreaming and popularization of characters like wednesday and eddie munson being treated as some sort of cultural appropriation or "invasion" of alternative subculture, and other alternative people gatekeeping what others can and can't like. It's not cultural appropriation if a non alternative person likes something? "Wednesday is popular while we were getting bullied for being like her" but I'm going to guess the people who watch the show aren't the ones responsible for you being bullied?! Getting mad at something becoming popular is just misdirecting of a totally justified anger that I'm sure a lot of alternative people have or had as kids. SUBCULTURES ARE NOT THE SAME AS ETHNIC CULTURES, cultural appropration is for white people wearing feather headdresses or bindis without any sort of knowledge of what the significance is behind them, not for when normal decent people like something that's commonly associated with being "alternative"
It's pooular for a reason. There's nothing wrong with that. It's not invasion or appropriation. Stop your nonsense. Let people like what they like.

''STOP ENCOURAGING CULTURAL APPROPRIATION, BLACKFACE, AND WHITE SUPREMACYk'
Cultural appropration is a racist/bioessentialist concept just as ''female/male cultural appropriation" is sexist and bioessentialist. Both are based on the idea that because of your biological characteristics you can't do certains things. It reinforce therefore racial/sex segregation/norms.
Blackface is done with the intent to mock/caricature so someone who acquire a black skin bc they are dysphoric or sencirely want to a x color of the skin isn't doing a black face. And for you a black person who transition to japanese is what ? Doing a asiaface/japface ? And what is your opinion on drag therefore ? A womanface ?
The accusation of ''White supremacy'' is non-sensical. First is based on the idea that transracials are only white people that idenfies as black, which isn't true. White ppl can idenfy to other white enthicities and black people can identify as white and as other racialized groups (from a western perspective). Most white transracials don't even idenfy as black.. so 🤭💀
Second transracislim doesn't promotes white supremacy since it 1) doesn't have a race-hierachy 2) doesn't put at top of the hierarchy white people/culture. Your claim is bullshit and the same kind of dishonest assertion such as terfs who claim that transgenderism is male supremacy~
Btw for you a nigerian person who idenfy as arabic is what ? Deeply racist.?
Tbh the only reason I'm not deleting this and moving on with my day is because this is almost laughable-- do you seriously understand what any of those words mean, or do you just know that they're Big Important Words that make people feel guilty on reflex instead of actually making a decent argument?
Let's start at the top now, why don't we, and have a good old fashioned vocabulary lesson?
Cultural appropriation refers to the use of objects or elements of a non-dominant culture in a way that reinforces stereotypes or contributes to oppression and doesn't respect their original meaning or give credit to their source. It also includes the unauthorized use of parts of their culture (their dress, dance, etc.) without permission.
I'm going to bet that no self-respecting oppressed culture would let a delusional white teenager take the sacred elements of their culture for their Tumblr aesthetic, so that's already one point for cultural appropriation. Just scrolling through the transrace tag, I see rampant examples of people supposedly appreciating oppressed cultures while only naming off the most stereotypical aspects of them ("I figured out I was transjapanese by watching anime!"). As I stated in the last post, artificially darkening akin contributes to the fetishization of people of color, and this is perpetuated by celebrities like the Kardashians and Ariana Grande who take elements of Black, Latine, and Asian culture to profit off of without any consideration or compensation to the people who are actively discriminated against for showing these elements of their culture in public. Hairstyles, speaking another language in public, wearing traditional clothing-- for people of color, this can lead to harassment, losing their job and education opportunities, and even death, but for white people? "Oh, you're so trendy, that's so exotic of you, what a cool and original style." Cultural appropriation in action.
Bioessentialism
The belief that ‘human nature’, an individual's personality, or some specific quality (such as intelligence, creativity, homosexuality, masculinity, femininity, or a male propensity to aggression) is an innate and natural ‘essence’ (rather than a product of circumstances, upbringing, and culture). The concept is typically invoked where there is a focus on difference, as where females are seen as essentially different from males: see gender essentialism. The term has often been used pejoratively by constructionists; it is also often used synonymously with biological determinism.
So,,, y'all racists see this concept, a concept traditionally use to attack and oppress people of color, and somehow think??? That it applies to YOU?
Okay, let's pretend that is the case.
The thing about bioessentialism is that is doesn't apply to things like race, gender, or sexuality. It applies to things that are stereotyped to be associated with those things. So, Asian people being smart, men being aggressive, gay men being effeminate, etc, etc. The concept of bioessentialism is, pardon my pun, essential to TERF ideology because they believe that if you are born with a certain set of genitals, your gender is inherent, and that includes men being terrible and aggressive and predators.
Let me repeat: bioessentialism is about TRAITS being associated with things like RACE, not RACE ITSELF.
Okay, that's two down.
Blackface
dark makeup worn to mimic the appearance of a Black person and especially to mock or ridicule Black people
This one is pretty cut and dry, in my opinion. Blackface is racist. Blackface is darkening your skin to appear Black. Therefore, trying to "transition" to a Black appearance is racist.
And, believe or not, yellowface is a thing too!
Yellowface is another example of the racism prevalent in American culture. Yellowface means more than a white person wearing make-up to look Asian. It also describes the systematic bias against hiring real Asians to play Asian roles shown by white producers, directors, and others who control the depiction of Asians in popular culture through casting decisions and the propagation of racist Asian stereotypes and caricatures.
And, to be completely honest, any person of color is trying to "transition" to another race (especially to white) is suffering from some pretty severe internalized racism that they should interrogate with other people of their race who I'm sure understand what it's like to feel alienated from your culture in the deeply racist society we live in.
Good, let's see what's next on the lesson plan...
White supremacy reflects the perpetuation of a false narrative that white people are better than people with other skin colors and ethnic backgrounds. It is when those with the most power across all systems in society fail to adequately reflect the diversity of BIPOC people, and instead maintain the problematic status quo.
I can see how this would confuse you, after all, how could wanting to be another race be perpetuating a narrative of white systemic control over people of color?
After all, it's not like white supremacy contributes to the infant mortality rate in people of color thanks to the slavery-induced stereotype that Black people have higher pain tolerances and therefore don't require the full spectrum of medical attention. It's not like Black children are routinely treated as adults as soon as they enter the academic system, being punished severely for minor offenses that their white peers aren't even given time out for, which lends to the young incarceration of people of color, who are often imprisoned shortly after or even during school. It's not like naming conventions that "sound" Black or Asian or Native or Latine are routinely eliminated from job prospects without any further consideration, because of the ideal that whiteness is more desirable.
It's not like white people routinely benefit from these things without even being aware of it-- the fact that they're born, the fact that they aren't punished as frequently or severely, the fact that they get jobs easier. It's so subliminal, so subtle, and when you do become aware of it, it makes you feel guilty. Because you're getting these things while others are not, without having done anything to earn them.
It's called white guilt.
White guilt describes the guilt brought upon by "the recognition of unearned and unfair racial privileges, the acknowledgment of personal racist attitudes or behavior, and/or the sense of responsibility for others’ racist attitudes or behavior."
When you're forced to confront the racism of yourself and your family and your culture, you can feel revolted by the things that you have been associated with, just by being white. It creates a sense of alienation, a rejection of the white "culture" that is so dependent on the oppression of others, and there are often two responses to it.
You focus on unlearning your own racist behaviors and beliefs, because everyone has them, it's just a matter of how deep they've been buried by years of propaganda. You fight against white supremacy and use your privilege to uplift and defend the people of color who are making their voices heard.
You disengage from it and defend your own behavior. You blind yourself to your own racist thoughts and ideas, claiming that just because you don't act like that means you're not racist. You reject whiteness without supporting people of color, you claim colorblindness, that "we're all the same on the inside."
What transrace/trace individuals have done is the second. In attempts to confront their bigotry, they've circled back around the age-old liberal and centrist posturing, claiming that "I've never treated anyone different" even when you undoubtedly have, and just refuse to recognize the nuance and complexities of whiteness and white supremacy.
It's a part of all of us, even people of color, because we live in a society so ingrained with white supremacy and racism that it becomes the social norm. The pandemic and murders by police have opened many people's eyes to the horrors of white supremacy and how it impacts people of color on a daily basis.
For many, it was a moment of radicalization. Of realizing the true depth of corruption in our government and society that has led to making these behaviors acceptable. It was a moment of making us say "that's not okay" and learning to fight white supremacy not only externally, but internally.
For others, their denial deepened. Their blind trust in the status quo and how things are was enforced by propaganda put out by police and government officials, and they refused to use the pandemic's solitude to interrogate their biases and improve themselves.
I suppose the shorter version of all of this would be to say, if you are uncomfortable with your race, whether it be white or any other, look up some workbooks and thought exercises on white supremacy. Do the work and unlearn the things you've been told. Accept that your past is not perfect, and you may have harmed others by playing into a racist system, but you can do everything in your power from now on to prevent further harm.
And that includes pointing out that seemingly harmless cultural appropriation has a deeply racist history that continues to impact people of color to this day.
Oh and, given that Nigerian Arabic is a common Arabic dialect in Chad, something tells me that there are people out there who are indeed both Nigerian and Arabic, but it would be the cultures they were born and raised into, not the ones they chose out of fascination.
