Workplace surveillance is coming for you
Tumblr media
If you want to do something terrible with technology, you can’t just roll it out on people with money and social capital. They’ll complain and your idea will tank. Successful shitty tech rollouts start with people you can abuse with impunity (prisoners, kids, migrants, etc) and then work their way up the privilege gradient. I call it the Shitty Technology Adoption Curve.
The point of the Shitty Technology Adoption Curve is to normalize technological oppression, one group at a time. 20 years ago, if you were eating your dinner under the unblinking eye of a video-camera, it was because you were in a supermax prison. Now, thanks to “luxury surveillance,” you can get the same experience in your middle-class home with your Google, Apple or Amazon “smart” camera. Those cameras climbed the curve, going from prisons to schools to workplaces to homes.
The pandemic was a great accellerant for late-stage capitalism, converting our homes to rent-free annexes of our employers’ facilities, and turning “work from home” into “live at work.” Bossware, a fringe technological category, experienced a massive boom, rocketing up the privilege gradient.
https://pluralistic.net/2021/02/24/gwb-rumsfeld-monsters/#bossware
For most of its history, bossware was used to police the most marginalized, oppressed workers, like the mostly Black, mostly female workforce at Arise, a company that charges workers for their own training and then fines them if they quit.
https://pluralistic.net/2021/01/22/paperback-writer/#toothless
But when lockdown turned high-status white collar workers into home-workers, their bosses rolled out incredibly invasive spyware, including tools that watched them through their cameras, listened to their microphones, logged their keystrokes, scoured their hard-drives and read their text messages.
This was the second coming of Taylorism, AKA “scientific management,” an early 20th Century pseudoscience practiced by high-priced, unaccountable consultants who would fan out on factory floors in literal science cosplay, including lab-coats and clipboards, and loom over workers, watching their every movement, often going so far as to film them.
hen the consultants would go back to their workplace, soup the negatives, and produce completely arbitrary workplace rules about how workers must stand, hold their limbs and heads, and move — it was a kind of corporate anti-yoga whose asanas were designed to make workers look productive to their bosses, who often had no idea how to perform or evaluate their jobs.
The pandemic’s new Taylorists do not confine themselves to the factory floor. Thanks to digital tools, they can come right into your home, and they can take high-frequency measurements of unimportant things in great detail, and then produce scores that your boss can use to decide whether and how much to pay you.
Bossware is the subject of an excellent New York Times feature by Jodi Kantor, Arya Sundaram, Aliza Aufrichtig and Rumsey Taylor, which documents the ways that “Worker Productivity Scores” undermine the workers’ ability to perform their jobs, while also allowing their bosses to steal their wages:
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/08/14/business/worker-productivity-tracking.html
Their case-studies are a trip up the Shitty Tech Adoption Curve, and includes $200/hour finance exec Carol Kraemer, who discovered that her boss was tracking her time in 10-minute increments and docking her pay for stretches where she took her fingers off her keyboard — to think, say, or make notes with pen and paper.
Kraemer discovered that the only way to avoid wage-theft was to do “mindless busywork” that produced the clicks that her bossware demanded, even if it got in the way of her work. This is yet more proof that “you treasure what you measure,” or, more formally, “any target becomes a measurement” (AKA Goodhart’s Law).
The decline of worker productivity in pursuit of metrics is an inescapable failure mode of bossware. In 2020, I reported on a reader’s experience working in an engineering shop where her boss evaluated her performance based on the number of trouble-tickets she closed, turning her into “a ticket-closing machine.”
https://pluralistic.net/2020/07/08/absolutely-remarkable-thing/#goodhartism
Being an engineer, this worker applied herself to the problem in a methodical fashion, and realized that she could juke her stats by closing tickets prematurely by marking them “did not respond” — and also that she could close and re-open the same tickets over and over, racking up points.
She closed by saying, “Your execs should fucking well know this: how would THEY like to be evaluated based on, like, how many emails they send in a day? Do they believe that would be good for the business? Or would they object that they are tasked with the holistic success of the org, and that their roles are too complex to reduce to a set of metrics without context?”
The irony, of course, is that bossware is now coming for execs, and, what’s more, they lack the engineering skills to optimize their work so they can get a high score and do the job, so they have to settle for just getting the score — and hang the job itself.
In the NYT story, the authors profile a wide range of people who are deliberately doing a worse job in order to get higher scores, including a group of hospice chaplains who are given points based on their work with dying patients and their families, scored in a way that is utterly disconnected from providing compassionate care.
Activities are scored based on their priority to management, without regard to the comfort they provide: 0.25 points for a phone call with a grieving relation; one point for a visit with a dying patient, 1.75 points for presiding over a funeral.
Chaplains’ ability to accumulate points was undermined by patients — who would take longer than anticipated to draw their final breaths, or break down in tears, or cancel appointments as they made their peace with their impending deaths. To maintain their wages, chaplains resorted to “spirtual care drive-bys” — like sticking their head in a room where a patient was unconscious, exchanging a brief word with a nurse, and marking it down as a “patient visit.”
Healthcare offers a fascinating window into the Shitty Technology Adoption Curve, as doctors’ and nurses’ work has been transformed by the electronic health record and its relationship to billing — so that now these high-paid, high-demand, high-skill professionals have to organize their work around data-entry on a system designed without their input and without regard to their priorities.
The Times reporters dig into the social workers, therapists and addiction counselors at Unitedhealth, a private-equity-backed healthcare monopoly. They get marked as “idle” if they stop typing to talk with their patients. If those conversations go on too long, they are marked as “derelict” and risk employment sanctions.
Social workers with masters’ degrees are compensated based on the number of keystrokes they generate on the job. For Unitedhealth admin workers who work from home, glitches in the system can imperil their jobs, for example, if the system hangs when you log out for the day, it can mark you as “idle” all night, killing your average score. Workers facing these problems are advised by their managers to jiggle their mouses periodically to keep the division’s score from falling.
One of the most interesting part of the Times feature is the work it does profiling the pseudoscientists who created and marketed this junk software. There’s Federico Mazzoli, co-creator of Worksmart, who explained the benefits of his product: “Once you see those metrics, those insights, something changes: You realize how much you waste doing nothing, or just multitasking and not accomplishing stuff.”
Mazzoli seems to have either not used his product, or, if he did, did so under conditions where he was in charge of it — using it the way an athlete might use a stopwatch to time their own sprints, and not the way a boss might: to decide whether to dock your pay or fire you.
This inability to understand the difference between using a technology and having the same technology used against you is endemic to the industry. Take Crossover, which bills itself as “the Fitbit of productivity,” but whose customers rhapsodize about the producing giving them “powers of near X-ray vision.” The point of a Fitbit is to help you improve something that matters to you — but Crossover’s customers want to use it to punish other people for failing to follow orders. It’s the difference between a Fitbit and a prisoner-tracking cuff — which make crossover “the ankle-braclet of productivity.”
Ironically, the Times reports that Crossover’s own employees so resented the company’s intrusive monitoring of them (as they created and sold intrusive monitoring tools) that Crossover hemorrhaged employees and struggled to hire replacements. Eventually, Crossover had to turn off its most intrusive features so that it could keep the employees needed to make and sell its bossware product.
One major focus of “productivity trackers” is measuring bathroom breaks and punishing workers for pissing. Piss-tracking tools are another shitty technology that has been racing up the privilege gradient, making the leap to white-collar workers after being imposed on blue-collar workers, like the Amazon warehouse workers and drivers who have to piss in bottles to satisfy their bossware:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/03/19/the-shakedown/#weird-flex
The next step on the gradient was students — children have slightly more privilege than nonunion blue-collar workers, it seems — with 1,000+ US handing public money to E-hallpass, a company that tracks children’s urination:
https://www.vice.com/en/article/dy73n7/ehallpass-1000-thousand-schools-monitor-bathroom
As the metaphor of corporate personhood has become more and more concrete (for example, through the Supreme Court’s Citizen’s United decision, which ruled that limits on corporate political spending violated their corporate persons’ free speech rights) many have pondered the question, “What sort of person is a corporation?”
The 2003 documentary “The Corporation” investigated this, declaring the if corporations are people, they are psychopaths — remorseless and totally lacking in empathy. Science fiction writers have claimed that corporations are “slow AIs” (Charlie Stross), or Skynet (Ted Chiang) or immortal colony organisms that use humans as gut flora (me):
https://pluralistic.net/2021/10/12/no-criminals-no-crimes/#get-out-of-jail-free-card
But the rise and rise of bossware implies another personality archetype for the corporation: the abusive alcoholic dad, whose own life is spinning out of control and who finds comfort by seeking to control the lives of others in humiliating ways that ultimately leads to his own destruction.
Because bossware doesn’t just radically reduce productivity by shifting the point of work from getting the job done to getting the boxes ticked — it also exposes the businesses who use it to existential risks. Take Office 365, the cloud-based word processing/spreadsheet/email system from convicted monopolist Microsoft.
Office 365 went from being an online version of Microsoft Office to being a bossware delivery-system. The Office 365 sales-pitch focuses on fine-grained employee tracking and comparison, so bosses can rank their workers’ performance against each other. But beyond this automated gladitorial keystroke combat, Offce 365’s analytics will tell you how your company performs against other companies.
That’s right — Microsoft will spy on your competitors and sell you access to their metrics. It’s wild, but purchasing managers who hear this pitch seem completely oblivious to the implication of this: that Microsoft will also spy on you and deliver your metrics to your competitors.
https://pluralistic.net/2020/11/25/the-peoples-amazon/#clippys-revenge
Even wilder is the further implication: that Microsoft might use the data its product gathers on your business — every keystroke made by every worker in the entire company! — to compete with you.
A century ago, “scientific management experts” tricked bosses out of fat consulting fees by promising to turn managers’ preference for “a smartly turned out workforce” into a scientific best-practice. This is pure empiricism-washing, where an irrational bias is encoded in mathematics and declared to be scientific truth.
Bossware companies target employers’ insecurity about their workers’ power to actually undermine the employers’ businesses, transforming productive workers into efficient metric-satisfiers, while raiding the company for valuable market-intelligence.
The bossware problem is a boss problem, in other words. It follows that fixing the bossware problem is the workers’ job, and indeed, the Times feature notes that Amazon has been dismantling its bossware surveillance in a bid to reduce its workers’ support for unionization, which promises to ban bossware from Amazon workplaces.
Bosses deride unions as reducing “freedom” — but just the threat of unions delivers more freedom to workers than any right-to-work law ever could. Bossware-infected jobsites are Stalinist dystopias, where workers are punished for looking in the wrong direction or failing to hit the keys fast enough, irrespective of whether they’re getting the job done.
Back in 2019, I wrote about this in “Affordances,” a short story for Slate Future Tense, which set out to explore how the Shitty Technology Adoption Curve may start with the most downtrodden and immiserated among us — but how, left unchecked, it will come for each and every one of us:
https://slate.com/technology/2019/10/affordances-cory-doctorow-sf-story-algorithmic-bias-facial-recognition.html

Something Old (Sashnetra pt 1/4)
Hi, I haven't published a fic since high school...so if this reaches you, feedback is more than welcomed :)
Read on ao3
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sasha Colby was proud of being a business owner in one of the most competitive industries in the country. Sure, she had no family of her own, no romantic partner, or even any pets, but her booming wedding planning business was all she ever needed in her life. Who had time for a personal life when she had her own business to run?
Sasha stared her business with wedding photography in her early twenties. Being kicked out of her family's house in Hawaii after coming out as a trans woman, she needed to find a way to make money and survive on her own. Couch surfing and working minimum wage could only get her so far. Luckily for her, her talents had paid for her transition, and eventually led her to opening up one of the fastest growing wedding planning businesses in LA. 'Colby's Cherished Celebrations' (or the CCC, as nicknamed by her assistant manager, Malaysia) has been built from the ground up and growing strong for five years, and Sasha couldn't be prouder of herself and her talented staff.
She and her team were all housed in an old office building in downtown LA, arranged on separate floors. On the first floor, had all of the bridal and bridesmaids dresses, on beautiful display. Her two lead dress consultants, Luxx and Mistress, helped brides, bridesmaids, and the occasional Prom goer, find the dresses of their dreams. Luxx and Mistress were excellent at balancing anxious brides trying on dresses, and putting rude family members in line during dress appointments.
Moving up to the second floor, held the business's floral arrangement department. Sasha met Aura and Robin when she photographed their wedding a few years before. The couple had started a flower shop in their garage, and after befriending Sasha, they had all decided to collaborate for several weddings afterwards. After a night of drinks to celebrate the successful wedding season that year, the couple moved their business from their garage and into the second floor.
And lastly on the third floor, sat Sasha's office, as well as the alterations department. Sasha was close friends with the lead seamstress, Loosey. Loosey had moved to LA from Connecticut around the same time as Sasha, and the two became fast friends after meeting at a Wedding Expo in Las Vegas. Sasha wouldn't admit it to the rest of her team, but she loved sharing the same floor as her friend. Herself and Loosey found themselves often in deep conversations during work hours, and kept each other company during the slower off-season as well.
Sasha started her day in her eloquently decorated office, getting to the CCC before any other employee. Her best photography work from Hawaii hung on the walls, against a deep purple paint on all four walls, making her office inviting for her clientele. She had her first cup of coffee finished already, and getting ready for the first consultation of the day. A knock on the old wooden door pulled her away from her thoughts, in which she automatically called out the the person to come in.
"You're first consult is in the lobby, the bride and her mom."
Malaysia, stepped in to the office, handing the intake file to Sasha.
"Great, anything I should know before I meet them?" Sasha flipped through the file, scanning through the bride's information.
Malaysia pursed her lips before speaking, "Her name is Anetra, and she and her groom are Mormons. They're from Las Vegas, and the groom is polyamorous, so she will be wife number 2."
Sasha looked up, trying to hide the surprise on her face. Sasha had worked with many brides and grooms over the years, but a Mormon with more than one wife is a first for her. In the file, it said that this bride was 20, and her planned bridal party consists of her future sister wife, and her younger sisters. Sasha shook off the any pre-conceived notions about what she read about Anetra and her groom, hoping that the her and her family won't be ultra-religious, bigoted, assholes during the planning process. Sasha glanced at the small trans flag in her pencil holder, and looked back to Malaysia and smiled.
"Okay, send them up here."
Malaysia nodded and left, and a few minutes later she heard a middle-aged woman's voice heading up the stairs in mid-conversation.
"...And that young man that drove the Uber over here, you know the one with the eye liner and nail polish. This town probably made him one of those gays too!"
Sasha made the split second decision and grabbed the trans flag out of the pencil holder and put it back upside-down, with the pink, blue, and white material hidden in the cup. She wasn't ashamed of being trans, just...needed to make a quick business decision, that's all.
In walked a shorter middle aged woman, who Sasha presumed was the voice she heard from the staircase. She had tanned skin, and long dark hair tied into a bun and carrying a large purse. Behind this woman, stepped in a younger brunette woman, who was a couple inches taller than Sasha. Her hair was tied in a plait that hung against her back, and her eyes remained downcast while trailing her mother and into one of the chairs in front of the desk. Sasha took notice of the woman's athletic build and the elongated features of her face.
Sasha began her usual spiel, explaining to the bride and her mother her team and the planning process, including pricing options and answered their questions. Anetra's mother did most of the talking to Sasha, while Anetra nodded along on occasion to stay engaged in the conversation. About half an hour into the appointment, the mother piped up, and asked politely "I need to use the ladie's room, where can I find that?"
"It's at the end of the hall, last door on the left." Sasha answered before the older woman stepped out of the office.
Usually Sasha and her clients don't have many awkward moments of silence. But with a bride this quiet and shy, she had to be the one to break the ice. "So...are you excited to get married?" she asked as she leaned closer to Anetra.
Anetra nodded, like she had been the majority of the appointment before she spoke "Yeah, my mom has been waiting for us to get engaged. I'm the oldest sibling and she's been waiting for a wedding since the day I turned 18."
"How did you meet him?"
Anetra looked up, and Sasha noticed her warm, brown eyes. "He's one of the leaders of our church, and he and his first wife have been looking for another wife in their marriage."
"Oh, well they seem lucky to have you in their relationship." Sasha said in a sincere tone. She had excellent small talk skills, especially talking to nervous brides.
The two were interrupted by Anetra's mother walking back in to the office, and they had continued with the rest of the consultation. Sasha put in her schedule book the next appointments, like dress fittings, alterations, cake tastings, and made referrals to her usual photographers, hair and makeup artists, and caterers. Sasha walked her clients out of the office and down the stairs, and into the lobby.
"Okay, I will see you two again next week for the first dress appointment!" Sasha smiled as she opened the front door, and all three said their goodbyes.
"Ten bucks says that they're part of a weird religious cult."
"Mistress!" Sasha spun on her heel, shooting a glare to her employee.
"What? She's got a point, why else would she be the second wife to a Mormon pastor?" Luxx pointed out. standing next to Mistress, tilting their head while crossing their arms.
"And what do you two know about cults?" Malaysia asked from the front desk across the lobby.
Sasha let out a soft cackle as she walked back upstairs. "Today is going to be a long day for us. Let's make some happy brides, girls!" She didn't know why, but Sasha couldn't stop thinking about the shy and reserved bride from that morning for the rest of the day.

Understanding the Importance of Credit Ratings for SMEs, MSMEs, and Startups in India
In the ever-evolving landscape of the Indian economy, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and startups play a pivotal role. These entities not only drive innovation but also create significant employment opportunities and contribute extensively to the GDP. However, one of the fundamental challenges they face is access to capital. This is where the importance of a robust credit rating comes into play.
Why is Credit Rating Crucial?
1. Access to Finance: Credit ratings determine the creditworthiness of a business. A high credit rating reassures lenders of the lower risk involved in extending credit to the business. This can lead to easier access to loans, lower interest rates, and more favorable repayment terms. For SMEs, MSMEs, and startups, which typically face higher scrutiny from financial institutions, a good credit rating can open doors to essential funding.
2. Credibility with Suppliers: A strong credit rating not only helps in securing finance but also enhances the business's credibility in the eyes of suppliers. Companies with better credit ratings can negotiate better credit terms such as longer payment durations and bulk order discounts, which can significantly improve cash flow management.
3. Competitive Advantage: In a market teeming with competition, a good credit rating can serve as a badge of reliability and sound financial health. This can be particularly beneficial in tendering processes where the financial stability of a business is a key consideration.
4. Lower Borrowing Costs: Businesses with higher credit ratings can secure loans at lower interest rates. Lower borrowing costs mean that the business can invest more in its growth and development, improving profitability and sustainability over time. This is especially critical for SMEs, MSMEs, and startups, where financial leverage can determine market positioning and long-term success.
How to Improve Your Credit Rating?
Improving and maintaining a good credit rating requires a strategic approach, including timely repayment of loans, prudent financial management, maintaining a balanced debt-to-income ratio, and regular monitoring of credit reports for any discrepancies.
Need Expert Guidance?
Understanding the nuances of credit ratings and effectively managing them can be complex. This is where expert financial advisory services, such as those offered by Finnova Advisory, come into play. Targaryen Inc (1/?)
Tumblr media
Description: A Modern AU with the Targaryen and Hightower children as head of departments trying to keep Viserys' company alive while navigating their own feeling towards each other.
The Targaryens. Formerly one of the biggest families in the dog show world. With dozens of titles under their belts, and prize winning dogs belonging to each member of the family, the competition world was shocked when the patriarch Viserys Targaryen announced his family would no longer compete.
Following the death of his beloved wife Aemma, Viserys withdrew from the paw shaped spotlight and teamed up with an old friend, one Otto Hightower, to form Targaryen Incorporated and its foundation the Aemma Arryn Fund. The Aemma Arryn Fund focused on underfunded shelters and fighting for the rights of animals.
(The Hightower family has long been involved with the Stock Market, consulting, and Otto Hightower himself had made quite the fortune. Only to be outdone by his daughter Alicent, who after the death of her husband became a force to be reckoned with, starting her own Fortune 500 company that launched the Hightower name into the stratosphere.)
Targaryen Inc, a company focused on all things dog related took off overnight, and The Aemma Fund as it was commonly referred to, became one of the biggest names in supporting animal shelters, clinics, and rehabilitation programs. Viserys and Otto could not run the business on their own and brought their daughters Rhaenyra and Alicent in. The two women through determination and hard work made their way up the ranks and now stand as co-chairs of the company. “It’s a family business,” CEO Viserys Targaryen said in an interview, “we enjoy having the girls. Not only are they excellent employees, but they brighten our day every time we see them. I know Aemma would be happy to see the Hightowers and us working so closely together.”
But unfortunately, the company began to decline, and a scandal rocked Targaryen Inc, resulting in Otto Hightower being booted from the company. Not much is known about said scandal, seeing as the employees of Targaryen Inc are tightlipped. We at Westeros Daily reached out to Head of the PR and Marketing, Daemon Targaryen for comment to which he replied “f***k off.”
Now, with the firing of Otto Hightower, it seems the old guard is shifting. The children of Rhaenyra Targaryen-Strong and a cousin from the Strong family have been placed into prominent positions, with the children of Alicent Hightower also filling in newly vacant roles. Only time will tell if this transplant of new blood will revitalize the aging company or drag it into the mud where Otto Hightower currently resides.
“It’s not too terrible. It ends optimistically, in a way.” Helaena said, her voice pitched up as she gave Alyra a sympathetic smile.
“Ms. Rhaenyra, it’s only my second week, I don’t know if I can spin this. Daemon told the Westeros Daily to fuck off. They’re one of the realm’s most trusted sources of information, and they don’t forgive easily.” Alyra groaned, still highlighting sections of the article and jotting notes down in the margin.
“Maybe you can reach out and apologize on Daemon’s behalf? Send the editor, and whoever Daemon spoke to a bouquet, and order pizza for their office.” Rhaenyra said, looking up from her computer at the two women standing before her desk.
“I’ll have to run it by finance and let them see if we have the budget for it.” Alyra said, googling how many employees currently worked at Westeros Daily. “But, I agree, at least the bouquets and I can go in person to deliver them, I really don’t want to start off on the wrong foot with WD.”
Rhaenyra nodded, “good idea. Run it by Aemond, then go over there and apologize.”
Alyra and Helaena left Rhaenyra’s office once she dismissed them, and Heleana squeezed Alyra’s shoulder before drifting back to her office.
Alyra made her way down the hall to Aemond’s office, waving at her cousin Jacaerys through his office windows as she did. Jacaerys gave her a quick wave, his office phone pressed between his shoulder and his head.
She knocked on Aemond’s door before slowly opening it. “Hey Aemond, are you busy?”
Aemond’s office was the most organized office she’d ever seen in her life, besides Alicent’s. His desk and the bookcases behind it were a dark wood almost black, with old but pristine leather chairs and a faux gold statuette of a Great Dane sat on the corner of his large desk. The bookshelves were filled with books that ranged in topic from world history to modern banking habits.
Aemond looked up from his dual monitors at her question. His long hair was pulled back, and he’d shrugged his coat off, leaving him in a black turtleneck, that clung to his surprisingly well-defined biceps. His eyes, one violet, the other a sapphire blue prosthetic, focused on her. “Not too busy, why?”
“Can I sit?” She motioned to one of the two leather chairs positioned in front of his desk.
“Of course.”
Alyra sat, and crossed her legs, smoothing out taupe colored slacks. “As I’m sure you’re aware, the Westeros Daily published an article about the company yesterday. And Rhaenyra and I think that it would be best if I went and apologized to the author of the article, and the chief editor for Daemon’s comment to them.”
Aemond hummed lowly and typed something into his computer, his lithe fingers flying over the keys of his keyboard before she could hand him the article on her tablet. “I see, and you came to me with this information because?”
“We wanted to bring apology bouquets to the author, and the chief editors, and maybe buy pizza for the other employees?” She said, giving him a hesitant smile.
Aemond typed something else into his computer, scanned the results, then looked off to the side for a moment before saying, “flowers yes, pizza no.”
Alyra stood and clasped her tablet to her chest, smiling brightly at him. “Okay, just flowers, got it.” She moved to leave his office when his voice stopped her.
“Alyra, average price flowers if you can, nothing too expensive, we’re not trying to woo them.”
She glanced back at the slight smirk on his face. “Was that a joke, I hear? From the lips of Aemond Hightower? Did hell freeze over?”
Aemond raised an eyebrow, “I’m perfectly capable of making jokes, Alyra. Perhaps you’ve just never caught them before.”
Was he calling her dumb? She knew Aemond and her weren’t the closest, but she’d only meant to joke with him a little, it had all been in good fun.
“I guess not.” She said lightly, keeping the smile on her face, even though her pride had taken a hit. She turned and exited his office, feeling a little put out by his words. Maybe he didn’t mean it that way, I don’t know him that well, maybe it’s just the way he jokes, and I’m taking it too personally.
Alyra shook off her thoughts and walked into her office, shutting the door, something she rarely did, behind her. She’d put a lot of work into making her office feel like an extension of herself. She’d gone for a light and airy color scheme, contrary to Aemond’s dark and modern scheme.
Her favorite thing in her office was her cream-colored desk that held her picture frames, a vase of fake roses, her computer, and had more drawers than she knew what to do with. Mr. Strong, Rhaenyra’s husband, and head of her security even built a mini shelf underneath for her space heater.
She sat in her plush, baby blue desk chair, and shook her mouse, waking her computer. She’d order the flowers, then pick them up and deliver them to Westeros Daily. As she scrolled through the arrangements, a chat bubble popped up in the bottom right corner of her screen.
Lucerys: Hey I know you talked to my mom earlier, did you tell her about my idea for pet day?
Alyra groaned, she’d forgotten all about her promise to her cousin, about pet day.
Alyra: Shit, no I forgot, I’ll bring it up next time I promise.
Lucerys: You’re not my favorite cousin anymore :(
Alyra rolled her eyes.
Alyra: I’m your only cousin, dumbass.
Lucerys sent a GIF of a sad looking puppy dog, and she rolled her eyes again, breathing out a laugh before closing the chat and returning to the task at hand.
A knock at her door startled her, and she glanced up to see Aemond.
She motioned for him to come in, and he opened the door slowly before closing it, his arms clasped behind his back.
“Don’t tell me you changed your mind about the flowers, I literally just ordered them.” She said apologetically.
Aemond shook his head. “No, the flowers are fine. I wanted to apologize.”
Alyra tilted her head in confusion. “Apologize? For what?”
He nodded. “My comment to you earlier, I realized it may have come off as rude. I forget that we don’t know each other very well yet, and you might not be aware of my…what does Aegon call it? Oh, yes. Biting humor.”
I was right! He doesn’t hate me.
Alyra adjusted the sleeves of her long sleeve shirt, pulling them forward to further cover her hands, a nervous habit she really did need to break. “I assumed that might be the case. I’m so familiar with Heleana considering we lived together, and Aegon’s humor was so easy to figure out, that I also forgot that my jokes might not land with you until we get to know each other better.”
“I’m glad we seem to be on the same page then.” Aemond said, his shoulders relaxing ever so slightly.
“Of course, no hard feelings.” Alyra reassured him.
Aemond turned to leave but stopped, hand frozen on her doorknob. “Just for the record, I have no doubt that you’ll be able to catch my jokes for here on out. Helaena spoke highly of you all throughout college, and I’ve seen your capabilities just in these first two weeks. I have a feeling we’ll get along quite well.”
Then he left, shutting her door softly behind him.
Alyra waited until he’d passed her window and placed her hand over her heart, willing it to slow. All he did was apologize and compliment your work ethic, why are you freaking out? She scolded herself, before grabbing her car keys. She had a job to do.
Chapter Two here!!!!
