Bloodbourne is easier than this.
Tumblr media
Apologies for the delay, we purchased Bloodbourne from some guy in Hearthome and I’ve been hooked. It’s a nice little break from our perilous adventure.
Anyway, we headed South and battled what’s-his-name again, he wasn’t much of a threat. The battles which came afterwards though (many against wild Bibarrel) left us a bit worse for wear. Betty gathered us some berries but she believes the yellow ones are bad luck. After a quick lunch break we set off to Solaceon town.
Benson was eager to explore the ruins, but Betty didn’t want to get her paws dirty so she waited outside. After chatting to the townsfolk, we set off North where trainers proceeded to almost destroy us.
Luckily I managed to by a bunch of Moo-moo milk from a local Cafe, which kept us going up until Veilstone. Annndd that’s when I realised the next gym was fighting type.

A while back I made a series of posts examining the real-world origins of every fish Pokémon. It’s been a while but I’ve gotten the urge to do more of that. So now I’m doing the same thing, but with every aquatic non-fish Pokémon instead. What I define as aquatic is that it has been depicted as aquatic either in Pokédex entries or in the main series games. Most of them are water-types but not all and there are even a few water types I don’t think are aquatic. I’m also going to cover the water starters and legendaries/mythicals in their own segments. I will start with generation I, which I will be splitting in half because of how many there are. This entry will cover the Psyduck through Shellder lines while part 2 will cover the Krabby through Dratini lines.
The Psyduck line seems pretty obvious. It’s right in the name, they’re ducks, right? Well I’m not entirely convinced that’s all. Psyduck has the classic yellow duckling/rubber duck coloration, but it clearly has arms instead of wings. There’s another hint of them not being ducks in their typing. Back in the development of gen I, the flying type was called the bird type. This is why the Doduo line is part flying despite being flightless. The similarly flightless psyduck line not being granted the bird type makes me think they aren’t supposed to be ducks, but rather playtpuses (platypi?). These are among the only surviving monotremes, a lineage of primitive, egg-laying mammals that may represent a stage of development between pre-mammal therapsids and modern viviparous mammals. The platypus has four legs with webbed toes and a duck-like bill, just like the Psyduck line. The only thing the two are missing is the beaver-like tail.
Tumblr media
(image: a chimera platypus)
Golduck is also based on the kappa, a creature of Japanese folklore described as a humanoid with a beak that lurks in ponds and streams. The gem on Golduck’s forehead is likely based on the third eye symbolism you get in a lot of new-age woo and the pseudoscience of parapsychology, which was adapted from the chakras of Hinduism. This is in reference to the line having psychic powers despite not being psychic-type.
Tumblr media
(image: one of many depictions of a kappa)
The Poliwag line are based on tadpoles, the larval stage of frogs. As they mature, tadpoles go from basically a head with a tail on it to a tailless frog. Poliwag represents an early stage in the metamorphosis of a tadpole where it starts to grow hind legs and has not yet lost its tail or started to grow its front legs.
Tumblr media
(image: a tadpole with its hind legs grown in)
Poliwhirl and Poliwrath are a more advanced state of metamorphosis where the tadpole has grown all its legs and lost its tail, but is still not a mature frog. Only if Poliwhirl evolves to Politoed does it become a mature frog. Poliwrath never fully maturing is an example of neoteny, a species retaining juvenile traits into adulthood. There aren’t any examples of neotenic frogs that I could find, but there are neotenic salamanders, most famously the axolotl, with keeps multiple juvenile traits as an adult. Politoed is just a generic green frog. The spirals on the bellies of the line is a reference to how some species of frog have such thin abdominal skin in their tadpole stage that their intestines can be seen through the skin. (warning, potentially gross picture below).
Tumblr media
(image: a tadpole with visible intestines)
The tentacool line are jellyfish. Specifically, Tentacool may be a box jellyfish, the only jellyfish with true eyes.
Tumblr media
(image: diagram of a box jellyfish with focus in the eyes. source)
Several species of box jellyfish are also extremely dangerous to humans, with their venom causing extreme pain and death. Tentacruel may also be based on the Portugese man-o-war (in fact, Manowar was its prototype English name). Despite looking similar and having a similar hunting style, man-o-wars are not jellyfish, but siphonophores, an extremely cool group of colonial cnidarians you can learn about here. Man-o-wars float on the surface of the water and with for prey to run into their stinging tentacles. Tentacruel is often depicted hunting in a similar style.
Tumblr media
(image: a man-o-war)
Finally, the line’s big red gems and ability to fire laser beams from them likely comes from “bug-eyed monsters” a classic type of sci-fi monster typically found in b-movies.
The Slowpoke line are weird. They are one of those Gen I lines that are weird monsters with little in the way of real-life counterparts like the Nidos, Rhyhorn, and Kangaskhan. I think Slowpoke is a combination of hippos and giant salamanders. It has the little round ears and snout of hippos (which spend much of their time in the water) while its body shape and behavior are closer to giant salamanders. Not just any big salamanders though, they are based on the Cryptobranchids, of which there are three living species: the Chinese giant salamander (actually 5 closely-related species), Japanese giant salamander, and north American hellbender. These giant salamanders spend most if not all their time underwater and are known to be very long-lived and spend most of their time sitting perfectly still, waiting for prey to pass by. Their very still and slow lifestyles inspired Slowpoke’s slowness and stupidity.
Tumblr media
(image: a man holding a giant salamander and fulfilling a wish I didn't know I had until just now)
Things get more complicated when Slowpoke evolves. Both Slowbro and Slowking have a symbiotic relationship with a shellder that bites onto their tail or head, respectively. The shape of the Shellder is based on a turban snail and was planned to be available as an evolution foe Shellder in the Gold/Silver beta called Turban. The fact that the line’s Japanese names (Yadon, Yadoran, and Yadoking) come from the word “yadokari” meaning “hermit crab” and Slowbro being called the hermit crab Pokémon is pretty clear that they supposed to be hermit crabs despite being possibly the least hermit crab-like creatures ever. Come to thing of it, Digimon has Shellmon, another supposed hermit crab that's a weird pink monster sticking out of a turban snail shell. I don't know what to make of that. The hermoit crab connection isn't a very strong connection as hermit crabs live in the discarded shells of snails for defense while only mega Slowbro can actually withdraw into the Shellder. Slowking’s Shellder being on its head and it having that neck ruff is a reference to royalty wearing ruffs, crowns, and turbans. It being the smartest of the Slows may also draw from imagery of the wise, middle-eastern vizier or scholar trope. Finally, both evolutions are based on the sazae-oni, a legendary Japanese sea monster that wears a turban-shaped snail shell. The Pokémon version did not keep the part of the legend where it steals a bunch of sailors' testicles and holds them for ransom.
Tumblr media
(image: a depiction of the sazae-oni)
The Galarian forms aren’t much different, though they seems to have moved to a more terrestrial lifestyle. Their Shellders being poison-type may reference the highly toxic cone snails. Galarian Slowbros Shellder being on its arm and acting as a projectile weapon references side arms and arm cannons while Galarian Slowking is a more sinister take on the turban-wearing wise man, with its Shellder now looking like a pointy witch hat.
Seel is, rather obviously, a seal, probably a harp seal pup. In addition to its seal origin, it may have some inspiration from other arctic marine mammals: the “horn” of a narwhal, white color of a beluga, and tusks of a walrus. Dewgong is named after the dugong, a relative of the manatee, but that is where their similarities end. Dugongs are rotund sirenians while Dewgong is obviously a seal. It’s a more mature Seel, with all the same inspirations.
Tumblr media
(image: a harp seal pup, easily the cutest thing I've ever put on this blog)
Shellder and Cloyster are both a hodgepodge of various bivalves. Shellder is a combination of clam and scallop. Clams spend most of their time buried under sand and have a powerful foot that can stick out of the shell and is used for moving and digging. Clams also have siphons, organs that are used to intake water, that can be extremely large in some species, most notably the geoduck.
Tumblr media
I know what you're thinking and shame on you (Image: a geoduck clam)
Shellder’s constantly exposed tongue is likely a representation of the foot or siphon. They are also based on Scallops, which can swim short distances by rapidly opening and closing their shells to shoot out water.
Tumblr media
And now you know why Spongebob made these into birds (gif: a scallop swimming)
Cloyster retains the Scallop swimming methods, but are more based on thorny oysters and true oysters. Thorny oysters are known for having prominent spines on their shells to deter predators.
Tumblr media
I CAN FEEL THE WARP OVERTAKING ME! (image: a thorny oyster)
True oysters are the most famous pearl-producing bivalves. Cloyster’s head is based on a pearl, specifically a black pearl. These are produced by only a few species and are very valuable due to their rarity.
Tumblr media
(image: black pearls on the shell of one of the species that make them)
That’s it for the first half of gen I. I will return soon (hopefully tomorrow) for the second part and they we will move on to gen II and beyond.

Not Pokémon-related but who else remembers this character? 😄 Hugo's game-show was very successful in my country between 1996 and 2001 and I recently managed to make work an old CD on Win10! Entirely coloured with the watercolour technique.

Trying to think of all of my favorite Pokémon; and a lot of them I don’t think would be very good pets haha (Gliscor, Larvesta, etc)
But one Pokémon I really love is Whimsicott! I’m curious to see how living with one would fare, especially with their mischievous nature!
(Btw I love this blog, I love the way you apply the Pokédex entries to real life and in comparisons with real life pets! It’s super fascinating and cool!)
Tumblr media
(Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoy my blog!)
This one really caught me off (cotton)guard, but once I got into the analysis I ended up being surprised that whimsicotts' score didn't end up lower. Unfortunately, a whimsicott would not make a good house pet.
They're small, lightweight, and cute, of course! And as far as the danger of their move pool goes, its pretty standard grass-type faire, with rare but possible poison risks and nutrient absorption. While we always stress that these risks should be heavily considered when thinking about taking in a pokémon as a pet, these point detriments weren't really what dragged down whimsicotts' score!
Let's consider wild whimsicotts' observed behavior, to get a better feel for why the species wouldn't be a good fit for a home. Whimsicotts float about freely on the wind, passing from place to place as they see fit. They are known to infiltrate people homes to cause mischief, their favorite pranks including rearranging furniture (X), hiding important objects (Ultra Sun), and making a mess by leaving bits of their cotton scattered all over the place (Black 2/White 2). This behavior, while annoying or humorous depending on your mood, isn't even the issue. It is said that whimsicotts can, "like the wind, slip through any gap, no matter how small" (Black). This means that it is nearly impossible to keep a wild wandering whimsicott out of your home. It also means, critically, that keeping a pet whimsicott inside your home would be similarly impossible. Whimsicotts are nomadic by their nature. After wrecking their mayhem, they never stay in one place (Ultra Moon). This means that even if you were somehow able to seal up your home so much that your whimsicott couldn't wander outside alone, they would likely be unhappy when prevented from running off and may lash out.
One time, in the real world, I asked someone who worked at an American zoo why they didn't care for any beavers. They told me, quite simply, beavers can not, and will not, be contained. It seems that whimsicotts may very well be the same way. By all means, treat the wild nomadic whimsicotts that float on by kindly, but they would likely not thrive as a house pet.

[A video is embedded. Zelda is adjusting the camera to show a large patch of tall grass. She is talking rather quietly, as though afraid to disturb anything.]
"So. My ears are still throbbing and I can't even speak normally, lest I make my headache worse. But I've decided to try to be productive and observe, quietly, some wild Pokémon around here." [The camera fumbles a bit as she reaches for a notebook she has in her pouch.] "Wish there was a way to film this more easily..."
[The video blurs suddenly as the phone flies out of her hand and steadies midair, to show a young, blonde woman staring at the phone with her mouth agape, and a dropped notebook by her foot.] "Bzzt! Rotah!"
"I-- you--" [Zelda stutters near indiscernibly.] "You've been able to do that this whole time????"
[The Rotom Phone sounds mischievously pleased with itself.] "Bzzt!"
[Zelda stays silent for a minute, blinking.] "You know, I really should have kept that 'how-to-use' manual the shopkeeper gave me. Regardless. Um. How should I refer to you?"
"Bzzrt!" [Some text pops up on the side of the screen that Zelda can presumably read as well. It reads: "just refer to me as Rotom Phone, or Rotom if you want less syllables, bzzrt!"]
"I see. Rotom, could you film this Pokémon over here?"
"Bzzt!" [The camera flies down to show a small, brown beaver Pokémon.]
"This is a... Bidoof, yes?" [The camera moves back to show Zelda kneeling on the ground and scribbling in the notebook. After a little while, she stands up.] "I'm going to go check on Celebi. Thank you for recording, Rotom."
"Rotah!"
[The video ends.]

Multi!Hero who despite being crazy knowledgeable acts like a mother Ursaring and subtly “parents” other Pokémon. It’s probably a consequence of having teach so many Pokémon (including Caterpie), in addition to all the wild Pokémon eggs they raised in the Explorers’ portion. Manaphy was their kid no doubt about it. Soooooo. What does this entail exactly? Hero simply takes the little tips and tricks they learned handling so many different Pokémon to solve problems they see.
The first being—Bidoof who cannot stay full for the life of him and keeps absentmindedly eating the guild’s pantry. Hero dissects the problem: Does Bidoof get a big enough portion at dinner to feel full? Yes, but never for long. Does he apologetic about this habit? Yes, plus it also gets him in trouble with Chatot. Does he often feel hungry? Yes. Okay… Hero suggest that Bidoof start adding a bit more bark into his diet since they remember Bidoof are similair to beavers. Maybe he can make himself “bark-snacks” to stave off his ravenous hunger. Or maybe they have him perform a few moves before he gets to eat the snacks they make.
(Motivation. Adjusting his diet.)
Scraggy keeps offering backhanded insults to customers, it’s dragging down visitors to Paradise… Hero and Partner take him on a dungeon run making him the main attacker. “Oh, would you look at that? Seems like you need to brush up on the basics Mr Move Master.” The Post Town residents keep sneaking into the Paradise to ogle at Virizion? Assign her to training to subtly use Grass Knot to trip Pokémon while also galloping around.
Slurpuff won’t stop eating the dinner she prepares. Hero couches her on making the others meals first, wrap or box them up to lessen the temptation, then make her own portion. They have known someone with a similair ravenous appetite, but it’s not fun for anybody to go hungry after a long day at work. Hero also starts having Slurpuff put any rotten food in bags and place said bags on top of the leftovers. To discourage any late night snacking from anybody (Ampharos.)
i love multi!hero just becoming the Parent(tm) of all pokemon basically
it just comes to them naturally at one point to do this sort of thing with anyone when they notice something happening

“Day 13: Transform 🪵💨”
I’d came back for today’s program already, but also be ready for next week as I’m available for van scheduling that I’ve been waiting for. I’ll be there throughout the weekdays instead of Mondays and Fridays; at least good for my mom so she won’t get worried to drive me there everyday.
Do hope for some of my friends understand when given an update, but can a bit tricky concerning what I’m supposed to get through my Inktober artworks that are still in progressing. Just saying, though.
Speaking in which, here’s the 13th entire while its nothing to do for that infamous slasher. 🩸🔪
However, having Maxwell’s beaver buddy sudden transformation is out of nowhere. Was it a magician who casted spells on kids in the middle of the forest? That’s my inspired idea when bringing this Inktober post; from that Pokémon anime episode for “Ashachu” fans. ⬇️

Compton could be a normal-type gym leader! Normal covers a lot of "generic animal" Pokémon, including bird Pokémon, and suits his personality a little better than flying typically would, I think. He and Cassie can also bond over using types that aren't appreciated as much :>
oh that's so true, normal types are very Just A Dog or Beaver or Whatever
Compton and his very normal types he gives them all treats

My absolute favorite, most frustrating moments in video games:
Getting every figurine in wind waker, actually so much from wind waker could go here but that’s what made me draw the line when I was recently replaying it
Dodging 200 lightning bolts in final fantasy x to earn a weapon that the game doesn’t even hint at
Saving Lucca‘s mother in chrono trigger is basically impossible unless you use a guide and when you find the answer, you’ll cringe.
The entirety of paper Mario sticker star fuck that game
Good luck figuring out how to evolve all your pins in the world ends with you or it’s sequel without a guide
The bonus room hidden inside a bonus room in donkey Kong country
I’m not sure if anyone else had this issue, but it took me forever to get all the moons in wooded kingdom in super Mario odyssey because I didn’t realize you could fall into the deeper woods, I thought you would just die
Beaver bother minigame in donkey Kong 64 is an atrocity. Either nobody play-tested it, or there was a bug, or something, because it’s the most infuriating minigame of all time and they do NOT want to go in the hole even when they’re right on top of it
Getting the Regis in Pokémon Ruby and sapphire was pretty much impossible without a guide, especially if you were a kid with no knowledge of what Braille is whatsoever.
