for people citing Athena’s excitement in the episode where she is super excited about the cruise with Bobby while FaceTiming with her mom…have we been watching the same show? i am seriously curious.
it’s no secret that Beatrice Carter disapproved of Athena’s choice to marry Bobby. this is well documented and it’s canon as fuck. and that’s just Bobby existing. like the man probably cannot even breathe right in her presence. maybe she’s less vicious with him now but that doesn’t mean she’s fully approved of him. and Athena knows this because she knows her mom and how she operates. she might tolerate the big strong fireman now but that does not mean she likes him.
it is a fragile peace, of sorts.
so is it any surprise that Athena would do everything possible to make sure her mother doesn’t find some other reason to dislike Bobby? like, say, picking the wrong honeymoon for her daughter? it seems silly to hold that against the guy but with a mom like that…would a loving wife risk it?
is it really so hard to imagine that Athena would hide her genuine fears about going on a cruise ship with Bobby from Beatrice? that she would make sure Beatrice does not find yet another thing to disapprove of when it comes to Bobby? and is it so hard to imagine that Athena would hide her childhood fears from an overly critical parent?
do i think the Poseidon Adventure issue was already in place before season 7 was plotted out? no, not really. but does it work for me? so far, yes. i can buy Athena faking her enthusiasm and lack of fear from her parents. she doesn’t want to hear it from her mom and she doesn’t want to worry her dad. and she will shield Bobby from that mess as much as she can. as for May? i can’t imagine a mom like Athena would easily let her daughter know about this particular phobia. you never want to show your kids fear, or some shit like that people believe.
so…yeah. that’s my mish mash mashed potato brain thought of the hour. this isn’t a ted talk. kthxbyeee!

9-1-1 REACTION
This reaction is for the season 6, second episode titled “Crash & Learn” which originally aired on September 26, 2022. The episode was written and directed by Juan Carlos Coto. Spoilers ahead!
Tumblr media
Whew, chile! The writers of 9-1-1 are coming for our scalps and it’s only episode 2! This was a Hen and Athena-centric episode and it did not disappoint! There were quite a few crashes, both literal and metaphorical, and much was learned. There was so much that went down in this episode so I’m going to break it down, plot point by plot point.
We begin the episode with Athena and Bobby arriving in Florida. In the last episode, Athena's father, Samuel Carter, had a stroke while behind the wheel of his car and drove through the house. Athena and Bobby head to the hospital where he is being kept in a medically induced coma. Athena's mother, Beatrice Carter, appears to be in denial about her husband's health which puts her at odds with her daughter. Athena and her mother have always had friction. I suspect it may have to do with Beatrice not being entirely happy with the trajectory her daughter's life has taken. I also think they're a lot alike which might be why they butt heads.
When the three of them head home from the hospital, Athena is shocked to see her dad's car still parked inside the house. Beatrice assures her that Samuel will take care of it when he comes back home but Athena reminds her that it will be a while before he comes home - if he ever comes home. Beatrice is not trying to hear anything her daughter is saying, so Bobby does what he does best and steps up to be a buffer between mother and daughter. Bobby is such a good husband to Athena and while they've weathered their fair share of issues, it's so great to see them work as a team.
Tumblr media
Back in LA, we get our first emergency of the episode. Now this particular emergency hits different due to recent news of one of my favorite internet personalities announcing via social media that he has not only cheated on his spouse with whom he has two kids but he cheated with one of his employees. I don't condone infidelity but the man in this episode does the absolute most when he discovers his wife, Holly, is knocking boots with their next door neighbor, Angelo. Rather than go to marriage counseling or separate, Benjamin decides to set off explosions in his yard. This causes the underground tunnel the neighbor has built between the two homes to collapse thus trapping Angelo in the underground passageway. Thankfully Angelo is rescued by the 118 and Benjamin is justifiably arrested for his reckless behavior. At the end of this emergency, I was left wondering if it was worth it. Was the affair worth it? Was the revenge worth it?
Meanwhile, Hen is trying to balance her new role as the interim captain with preparing for her year 2 medical exams and her home life. I feel like Hen, for the most part, is portrayed as this bad-ass black woman who handles her business and no matter how busy she is, she always manages to make it work. I love how this episode explores that she is very human and humans get overwhelmed. Humans get tired. Humans fail. I just hate that she had to learn that lesson the hard way.
At first it does seem like Hen will manage to pull everything off. Soon Bobby will be back so she can go back to being a paramedic. Things at home seem to be going pretty okay. And she's also doing well studying for the test. Perhaps one of the scariest moments of the episode involves Hen nearly falling asleep at the weekend which I thought would finally be a wakeup call. Things only get worse when Hen forgets to attend one of Denny's events much to the disappointment of Karen. I felt so bad for Hen because you can tell she's trying so hard to do it all but she keeps coming up short.
Tumblr media
Our second emergency of the night involves a group of three friends who have known each other since the sixth grade. As part of their retirement trip, they purchase tickets to the Happiness Convention. Things take a disastrous turn when a portion of the building collapses and the three men are trapped. The main friend, Lev (played by veteran actor Arye Gross) attempts to save his friends and one of the young employees at the exhibit by insisting that Hen and Buck work on freeing them from the rubble.
While tending to Lev, Buck learns the reason as to why the three friends came to the Happiness Convention. Lev talks about how he has done everything he's supposed to - get married, have kids, have a career, etc. But none of those things really sparked joy in his life. Hearing this hits a little too close to home for Buck who is still nursing his breakup with Taylor. He is also on a journey of self-discovery and it almost seems fated that he would meet Lev at this point in his life.
Tumblr media
By the time Lev's friends and the young employee are pulled from the rubble, all three alive, Lev succumbs to his injuries. Buck doesn't exactly handle this well and does everything he can to save Lev. It's too late but Lev does manage to impart an important life lesson before he passes away.   If Buck is going to ever find true happiness in life, he needs to stop settling. He needs to keep learning and keep living.
It is refreshing to see this reflective side to Buck. Since his introduction in the season one pilot episode, Buck has always been impulsive and reactionary. He went from his relationship with Abby to Ally and then to Taylor. He's built his whole life around the 118. He's also experienced quite a bit of personal and family traumas over the years. Through it all, Buck has remained steadfast but perhaps that's the issue. Buck needs to get out there and shake things up. I'm hoping we get to see him try new things this season and hopefully he won't jump back into yet another relationship with someone who ends up disappointing him. I'm excited to see what happens next for our Buckaroo.
Tumblr media
Now back to Hen. When we see her struggling with the exam, I immediately began bracing myself for the bad news I knew was coming. When Hen received the call that she failed her exam, my heart broke for her. What's worse is that everything Karen said was right. Hen needed to choose between her medical career and being a paramedic as well as her family. Unfortunately it seems like the decision was made for her but something tells me that neither you or me should ever count Henrietta Wilson out. I don't know how things work in medical school but maybe she can keep going or start over. No matter what she decides to do, I do think that Hen learned a valuable lesson about what's truly important in life - as cliche as that sounds.
Tumblr media
Back in Florida, Athena enlists the help of a childhood friend to clean up the mess Samuel's accident created and Beatrice is not having it. She lashes out at Athena and accuses her of wanting her and Samuel gone so that she can get back to her fancy life in Los Angeles. Bobby, again, steps in and tells Beatrice to calm down and he later goes and talks with Athena. Athena  talks about her relationship with her father and how they used to pick oranges and tangerines together. It is so clear that both women are struggling with Samuel being in the hospital. For Athena, she doesn't want to lose one of her parents. For Beatrice, she doesn't want to lose the man she has loved for decades. Athena does talk with Beatrice and she lets her know that she isn't there to take over. She is only trying to make things easier for her. It appears that for now both mother and daughter are on the same page.
After an episode filled with crushing defeats and difficult losses, we are dealt yet another blow when Athena returns to her parents' home. The place is swarmed with cops and Bobby delivers the news that while he and her childhood friend were digging up the foundation, they discovered a body. Now being a true fan of this show, I immediately flashed back to "Athena Begins" which is the episode where Athena tells Hen about a little girl who went missing when Athena was very young. Hen asked if they ever found her and Athena said no. She said that she could remember her father, Samuel, and several others searching high and low for Tanya Kingston.
Tumblr media
When I saw the look on Athena's face in this scene, I knew she was thinking the same thing I was thinking, and at the end of the episode we get confirmation that the body is indeed Tanya Kingston. Dun-dun-dunnnnnn. So, like many viewers, I have questions. If Athena's family has lived in that house since Athena was a young girl, that means that someone she knows is responsible for the girl's death and subsequent burial. There's also the question of whodunit. Was it Samuel? If it's Samuel - wow ... that would be a tough pill to swallow. Is it her childhood friend's dad who was also mentioned in this episode. The real question is, how was a little girl buried under Samuel and Beatrice's house without anyone else noticing? Is there a conspiracy going on here? Something tells me we will find out soon.
What a great episode! This episode was a bit dark and sad at times but I think this was one of the better episodes of the show in quite some time. Season 6 appears to be off to a great start. We are getting what I felt was missing for most of last season - rich character development. Part of what makes this show so successful is that we viewers love the characters. We love Athena and Bobby. We love Hen and Buck and Eddie. We love Chimney and Maddie. We love their backstories and their ongoing stories and we want more. Hopefully we get more from our characters this season! Until next time ...

You know what - I’m really interested to see the Bobby/ Beatrice dynamic in 6x02!
Especially if we have a Bobby that’s in a spiral alongside a Beatrice that’s having to deal with the aftermath of her husband having a stroke - because I think Beatrice might end up being really amazing at helping Athena get Bobby back from whatever that spiral ends up looking like.
I just get this feeling that’s she’s gonna show up for the fight and that it’ll be really interesting

9-1-1 Season 6 Episode 3
Young Athena/Past
It’s too obvious to be her dad.
A girl she knew went missing. You really expect her to go back to sleep?
Oh damn. Her sister does not mince words.
So she knew her sister snuck out that night.
Damn. Really? Instead of taking her home you let her stay and drink a beer? All cause you wanna hang out that bad?
Oh he’s a predator.
Athena
Beatrice she can’t control things just because she’s a cop.
Oh confirmation that she’s a Nash.
Everything Reggie does or says is suspicious.
They’re trying to make it seem like it was her dad which makes me believe it wasn’t.
Sergeant Nash is on the case.
So y’all both snuck out. Maybe she snuck out and somehow ended up in the cement?
OH THIS COP CAN KICK ROCKS
They’re making it to obvious that it was Reggie. I feel like it’s also a lie.
Please be careful Bobby.
IT WAS THE SON!! But Reggie had to know considering he poured the cement.
Okay but wait. Why did he kill her? Like how did she end up dead? What happened? What reason did he have to kill her?
He’s disgusting.
GET HIM ATHENA
Of course he didn’t stop. He’s a disgusting predator.
Miscellaneous
Is this gonna be another past only episode? Oh no it’s not.
No Joanne, the killer didn’t ruin your life. They may have made it hard but you made a choice to allow that hard hand you were dealt to control the rest of your life. I feel for you, but I can’t blame the killer for how your life turned out.

Wow. So I could've had a completely different dad.
No. No, you couldn't. You'd be a completely different person. You are who you are because of your dad and me and who we were when we had you.

Beatrice practically runs through the corridor of the hospital. Camilla had called an hour ago and told her Ava had returned, but in the state she was in, she needed rest and hydration.
The former nun arrives on the unit Camilla had given her, and she can feel the divinium tattoos starting to react to the presence of the halo bearer.
She silently enters the room, vaguely aware of somebody in the bathroom at the entrance, until she sees the form of the woman in the first bed. IV lines, tubes and an oxygen mask in place, a woman is resting. Her skin pale, taunt, and aged.
Beatrice starts to cry, seeing the woman waking up and looking towards her, slowly raising her arm, pointing weakly and trying to speak through the mask:
« You… you came… you’re here… it’s been so long » she cries.
Beatrice gets nearer and her tears slowly falls down her face. She forces a smile, trying to be reassuring through her pain. « Of course I came, I missed you so much, Ava ».
The woman looks slightly confused, but keeps reaching out for Beatrice’s hand, and when their fingers touch, the former nun can feel cold fingers. Beatrice looks at the form of the frail lady in front of her, almost still and so different from the girl she knew. Even her eyes were different, clearer, her eye white as snow and the pale skin of somebody who had lived too many years away from the sun.
« I am so tired, I have waited so long to see you again » the older woman says, « you kept me waiting ».
Beatrice chuckled at that :  « I kept you waiting? Well you took you sweet time to come back to me, didn’t you? how am I suppose to catch up with you? »
« I am too tired to talk now, but tell me about you »
« No, you rest, I’ll be here when you wake up. I’m not leaving your side anymore. »
Almost straight away, the bedridden woman closes her eyes and falls asleep.
A nurse enters the room, and looks at the charts then at the monitor above the bed.
« Are you a relative? We thought she only had the people from her hospice to look after her? The sister wasn’t very clear about her medical history. Do you have any information? »
Beatrice looks down to the floor: « sorry, I can not help, we hadn’t seen each other in a very long time ».
The nurse has a sad look on her face : « well I’m sorry, she’s very poorly and well she’s very old so… uh… »
« I understand, but I would like to stay if that’s alright »
« Yeah, yeah, of course. I can bring you a more comfier chair if you’d like. I’m sure the other patient won’t mind the company. »
« Oh, I see, we’ll actually I haven’t seen the other patient, I mean, I’ve heard shuffling in the bathroom, but that’s all.»
« Oh, yeah, a real feisty one, won’t rest or even get an IV in, we had three needles breaking so we had to stop. She just went to have a shower while she waits for her girlfriend to pick her up. »
Beatrice’s phone suddenly starts ringing, and the nurse, leaving the room, tells her that she should take the call in the corridor. Although reluctant to leave the bedside, she can see that it’s Camila. She reaches the bed and drops a kiss on the lady’s forehead.
« What the fuck » she suddenly hears a voice behind her « I’m gone for a few months and you’ve already replaced me? »
Beatrice turns around, and there she is, in all her glory and youth and beauty. Ava.
« I thought I recognised the song, the one we danced to in the Alps? Bambola? Bea, are you ok? Why were you kissing Peggy? Are…are you having a stroke? That’s ok we’re already in a hospital… really you’re starting to freak me out. Please say someth… » well there are only a few ways to shut Ava up, and kissing her was probably one of the most pleasant.

Feedback Fest 2024
These are in no particular order and they are all from a few different fandoms. Just 10 fics that I love.
Increments of Longing by QuickYoke: Though I've read fic off and on for a number of years, this is the first fic that I loved as much as I loved my favorite books. The story is built well, the tension is built just right, and everything really pays off in the end. I'd only read a smattering of Jaina/Sylvanas fics before this, but it made me search out a lot more. Warcraft & World of Warcraft fandom | Jaina Proudmoore/Sylvanas Windrunner
of greater marvels yet to be by seabiscuit: I'm a sucker for religious questioning and queer desire. The build up is sooooo good, so many scenes felt so palpable. As a former Very Religious Kid(TM) who has a lot of complicated feelings about it, this did such a good job of holding the religious pieces gently in its hands while also not shying away from how complicated it makes everything and sometimes how uncomplicated it makes everything. Warrior Nun fandom | Ava Silva/Sister Beatrice
Equilibrium by caesurae: If someone had told me I'd ever read a Pacific Rim crossover I would have laughed. Especially if they told me that I would love it. The characters just really work here and I think it does a good job of showing how people can connect and love and understand each other even when it's not romantic. Overwatch fandom | Pharah/Mercy
the spectres vain by QuickYoke: this was the fic that got me into the Bly Manor fandom. I had really liked the show, but hadn't really explored much in the fandom. But I subscribe to QuickYoke and I got a notification about this fic and loved it. And then I loved many a Bly fic after. The Haunting of Bly Manor fandom | Dani Clayton/Jamie & Dani Clayton/Viola Lloyd/Jamie
i broke my bones playing games with you by mooosicaldreamz: I love Peggy Carter, and though Peggy/Angie isn't actually my favorite pairing, I think it's a great one. This is just a nice little modern day AU where Peggy is Captain America (written before we had our Captain Carter) and she meets Angie and they eventually fall in love. Agent Carter fandom | Peggy Carter/Angie Martinelli
not quite enemies, not quite allies by afterism: Peggy/Dottie is my favorite Peggy Carter pairing, though it doesn't necessarily lend itself to very longform fics. It's just smut, but I think it's a good enemies to lovers that moves very quickly and ends really believably. And kind of makes me wish there was more fic to go with it. Agent Carter fandom | Peggy Carter/Dottie Underwood
there's a funeral in your eyes by nirav: I love this for everything that goes through Ava's mind as she is dealing with the person she loves being possessed and trying to kill her. I really love this scene being reimagined as if Beatrice had been possessed, and I especially love how this fic does it. Warrior Nun fandom | Ava Silva/Sister Beatrice
Three Nights by lecriteuse: In Dragon Age: Origins I've always had my warden romance Leliana. She's my favorite character, I like having her around as much as possible no matter what game I'm playing. But when I met Josephine and had her tell me a bit of her background, I restarted my game and made it so my warden had never romanced Leliana so I could let her and Josephine have a go at it before Inquisition. This fic does a great job of putting that into writing. Dragon Age: Inquisition fandom | Leliana/Josephine Montilyet
who needs comfortable love by the_ominous_owl: This was just a really fun take on the Warrior Nun mythology. And a really well thought out and written play on it. Considering we'll only have the two seasons, this slots in really nicely to the gaps of questions left behind. It's also really cute. Warrior Nun fandom | Ava Silva/Sister Beatrice
bring home a haunting by QuickYoke and youngbloodbuzz: If the spectres vain is what got me into the Bly Manor fandom, then this is what made me stay. I looked forward to this fic every week, often staying up very late as the chapters got longer. This is the fic I return to when I finish a rewatch because it does a really good job of conveying a lot of the same emotions and themes. Bly Manor's big theme of ghost stories and love stories being the same thing is really, really present here: what if the the ghosts of our past came back and our emotions continued to haunt us until we confronted them? The Haunting of Bly Manor fandom | Dani Clayton/Jamie
