#Bal hates Todd

short but chaotic Nimona headcanons
One time the boys were going through their baby pictures and laughing
And Nimona let it slip that she doesn’t have any baby pictures cause she was never a baby
The boys being dramatic sappy dorks plan a whole day where they take stupid family photos
And Bal being the most dramatic sentimental dork of all even goes as far as photoshopping Nimona into some of their old photos
These photos were just supposed to be a cute little inside joke that they framed in their living room they never expected anyone to see them
But as time goes on and they make more friends people see those photos and draw their own conclusions
And maybe Bal is incredible with Photoshop or maybe no one in the kingdom has critical thinking skills because people start to believe Bal and Ambrosius raised Nimona
There is a tw*tter thread of them commending Bal and Ambrosius for training to be knights and saving the day all while raising a child
Someone was talking to Nimona and congratulated her on being so brave
And Nimona was like “Oh you mean the battle with the director?” the person goes "Well yeah that too but I was also talking about your parent's split divorce can be so messy"
Most people know this is just a long drawn out joke that the trio doesn’t have the willpower to debunk
And some people are out here defending this story posting shit like “No a friend of a friend was at the institute at the same time and saw them with Nimona”
The trio thinks it's fucking hilarious so they never bother to comment on it
In fact they didn't correct anyone until Nimona told the real story of Gloreth’s “Monster”
And they were really dragging their feet on telling people not because they were afraid of the backlash but because they knew the teen parent stories would stop
Everyone is fully convinced that Ambrosius is the best secret keeper of all time
He’s fucking not
He’s a gossipy little bitch but the people who he gossips with are the real vaults
Whenever he wants to gossip he'll talk to Nimona
And Nimona always drops his gossip onto Bal because he knows Bal will tell Ambrosius
Bal usually doesn’t gossip but if Ambrosius asks him “What’s on your mind love?” more than once he’s an open book
But the gossip never leaves their little trio no matter what
Whenever the trio gets bored like on errand days or long car rides they’ll play a little game
Basically they compare people they know to random objects or animals
And they win depending on how accurate the object is or if it makes the other two laugh
Some of the accurate wins were Ambrosius pointing at a wet cat and commenting that it reminded him of Bal, Bal pointing at dog shit and saying “Look it’s Todd”, and Nimona asking “When did the director come back to life?” while pointing at flaming garbage
And then there are the other answers like when Bal pointed at the air and said “Mom” Ambrosius just turns to him and goes “Bal you didn’t know your mom” and he just goes “Yeah that’s what she looks like in my mind”
Or Ambrosius pointed at a cemetery and exclaimed “Mom!” And Bal goes “Love your Moms alive” and all he says is “Shh Bal let me manifest”

Broke: Ambrosius and Todd got into regular fistfights before the knighting ceremony because Todd kept being mean to Bal
Bespoke: Ambrosius and Todd got into regular fistfights AFTER the knighting ceremony because Todd was still mean to Bal and Bal was 100% of Ambrosius' impulse control, and he is not here so really who is going to stop Ambrosius from beating the shit out of the guy who keeps talking shit about his boyfriend and OKAY YEAH BAL MURDERED THE QUEEN BUT SO WHAT AMBROSIUS STILL HATES HIS COWORKERS MORE THAN HIS QUEEN-KILLING EX SHUT THAT DIRTY FUCKING MOUTH OF YOURS OR I SWEAR ON GLORETH-
Like picture Ambrosius- feeling hurt and confused and angry and betrayed by everything that went down (and maybe a bit at Bal too?) and he doesn't even know if Bal is still alive because he chopped off his entire fucking arm AND THEN stupid fucking Todd comes in and starts running his stupid fucking mouth again and Ambrosius SNAPS and just lays all his frustrations on him because he is a mess and punching this guy is the closest to therapy he is going to be getting in months to come

Nimona-verse Ship wars
So I had this funny idea while trying to update the allergy fic
Like? what if the city had fan clubs? Some shipping fan clubs, too, and their on a ship war of sorts.
Now this is the funny idea. One group, the one with more members are the 'Goldenheart' shipping club which definitely has more members because, like, Ambrosius and Ballister are actually dating and together. There's an official, unofficial public announcement too since the pair are often seen holding hands by whatever version of a paparazzi they got going there. The fans went nuts when there was the footage of them kissing in public after Nimona's disappearance.
The other group was formed earlier, and they're into the 'love-hate' kind of shipping so *snorting* They're shipping Ambrosius and Todd together since they usually saw them together when they were all still hunting for Ballister, and in the past, the Media shooting footages of the Knights-in-training would sometimes show Ambrosius and Todd sparring and going all out that it kinda looked sexy to them.
Ballister is besides himself in how to take this information, while Ambrosius is absolutely livid when they're in their private home and rants about it non stop.
"SUREBLADE?! ARE THEY KIDDING?! SUREBLADE?! Bal, even if you and I weren't dating, I would kill myself first before ever even thinking about dating him! 'Spicy, rivalry, sexual frustration' THE FUCK IS THAT"

Ok so another au idea but story barely changes because this post focuses on Todd. I had small conversation with someone in one of my post made my brain go explode and remember the small scenarios I have with my own nice Todd and it made me giggle cause of the friendship.
In this au, Todd's relationship with Ballister started rough because the boy is insensitive and doesn't realize it.
He was always left confused as to why Ballister seemed so mad everytime they run into each other until Ambrosius (they're friends here) tells Todd about his problem of being rude to others without realizing it.
Upon knowing this Todd feels guilty and plans to apologize to Ballister, before also realizing that he must have done the same thing to Ambrosius a couple of times as well, so apologized to Ambrosius before looking for Ballister (Ambrosius helped him apologize to Ballister).
From then on, Ballister had two best friends who protects him from the bullying and the hate.
Todd developed a crush on Ballister, but soon discovers later that Ambrosius has a crush on Ballister as well. They would have become rivals if Ambrosius didn't share the fact that he(Ambrosius) had been crushing on Ballister before the three of them became best friends.
Todd felt bad knowing that Ambrosius had hid his feelings for so long while he just developed it recently, so he gave up and helped Ambrosius instead.
Cut to Todd's terrible wingman skills whenever Ballister is around. It always results into Ambrosius glaring at him while Todd just smiles and gives him a thumbs up.
Ambrosius: *whispering* "wuh- Todd! what are you doing?!?" Todd: *whispering back* "trying to get you alone with Ballister!" Ambrosius:*whispers angrily* "WITH A RUBBER CHICKEN AND A SANDWHICH?!?"
Surprisingly it works and Ambrosius has no idea why but he'll think about that later, and he'll also thank Todd about it.
At some point, Todd tells Ambrosius that he also had a crush on Ballister but gave it up so Ambrosius could have Bal instead. Made Ambrosius feel bad but Todd reassures him that its fine, and that it would hurt Ambrosius more if he(Todd) would end up with Ballister when Ambrosius had been crushing on him for years.
Soon Ambrosius and Ballister made it official, which made Todd happy for them. Despite the change of relationship, the trio stayed close and would always include Todd.
Except for date nights of course.
As a result, Todd became their child. Always keeping an eye on him and making sure that Todd doesn't accidentally insult someone without realizing it was an insult and to translate what Todd meant to others.
Ambrosius and Ballister would say "mean word/s" to let Todd know. And Todd would correct himself.
Will also add that Todd has the habit to just not continue or pause when he speaks because he assumes that others know what he is talking about, so Ballister and Ambrosius has to always give him a sign to let him know he needs to explain more.
No idea how the story would go in this version because I only focused on the silly Todd moments. Have two scenes that I thought of: Knighting ceremony Ambrosius helped Ballister into his armor, adjusting his shoulder pads in place to secure it. Ballister turned around, smiling at him as if to tell him thank you from his smile. Ballister was about to speak when suddenly an arm was placed over his shoulder which a bit of force which took him and Ambrosius by surprise.
"Hey Ballister, I know things were really tough for you back then, and I really thought you don't belong here." Todd finishes and lightly punched Ballister's shoulder. They were silent for a moment, expecting Todd to continue but didn't.
"And?"
"And what? You proved me wrong and now you're going to be a knight." Todd answers , feeling confused before realizing why both of them seem to look like they were anticipating something.
"Oh, did I do it again? Sorry." Todd apologized, taking his arm off of Ballister before moving to rub the back of his neck sheepishly.
"No worries. it's all right" Ballister reassured him with a smile.
Punchable face "I don't need a si-" "Every villain needs a sidekick"
"I'm not a villain-"
"WOAH! sick murder wall!" Nimona exclaims, excitedly hoping over to the said wall with pictures of people and evidence. "Are these your next targets?" "What?" "Who do you want to kill first?" Nimona asks, tapping her fingers together in a sinister way. Her eyes dart around the pictures on the wall before settling on the picture of Todd with a smug smile on his face. She gasps before pointing towards it. "THIS ONE! This one looks extremely punchable!" Nimona clenched her fist with an excited grin as she pictures herself beating the punchable guy. "Don't say that! He's actually really nice!" Ballister said, clearly offended about what she said about Todd. "Well, he can be insensitive but he's just not aware of it sometimes- wait no- GAH, THAT IS NOT A MURDER WALL!"

I got bored so here's a few things I noticed in Nimona that either made my day or made me cry or made me question everything I know. No in-between.
Also, yes, I know, almost everyone already pointed most of this out, but I just had to do it as well. It was destroying my brain. This is gonna be a long one too.
Nimona Spoilers!
The Director, not the Queen, being the one to give Ballister his sword for the first time, showing how much she truly worked to show Bal is the true villain, probably acting with him as she would any other knight all throughout his training and caring for him, making her betrayal that more hurtful for Bal.
Probably everyone expecting Ambrosius to be that classic "Noble asshole who's gonna make Bal's life hard just because he's a commoner" but instead not only is he kind, and goofy and himself around him but they're DATING!
At the beginning, they make out how most people aren't accepting of Bal being a knight, but in reality, we only see three people disagree with it, and the whole kingdom cheers for him when he's knighted (until his sword kills the queen that is)
Ambrosius slightly swinging his dangling feet when he's sitting with Bal. (Not that important but I just found that cute)
The first time we really see the clear difference between commoners, nobles and Gloreth's descendant is when they're putting on their armor. Nobles = Grey, white and gold. Gloreth's descendant = White and gold. Commoner = Black and grey.
Todd coming in, we haven't even heard of him at all so far, and yet we all hate him immediately because of how much of an asshole he is.
Also, Ambrosius' reactions and facial expressions when Todd is insulting Bal. Just, it's cute. Protective BF Ambrosius.
Bal knowing his sword doesn't feel right.
The Director telling Bal "Today the kingdom will see you for who you really are." Foreshadowing that they will see him as a queen-murdering villain and that she's the bitch who framed him.
"Wait, what do you mean? You think I'm her favorite?" Clearly not. She hates you. But that doesn't matter because we love you and your wet kitten eyes <3
The Director having the fucking audacity to look horrified. Also, the sword fired 2 shots. Does that mean she was hoping for someone else to get hurt/die?
Ambrosius looking fucking horrified, scared and confused as he looks down the hole the thingy made falling down as he watched his boyfriend(?) walk away, clearly in pain.
Nimona's "It ain't that kind of kingdom. And it ain't that kind of story." being a parallel to what Bal says at the end.
One of the first things we hear when Nimona approaches the thing talking about Bal is "Not since Gloreth's monster has anything been so hated." So Nimona basically learns that someone is hated as much as her.
Bal canonically being able to take care of an amputated arm and build a prosthetic, but also him canonically listening to Grrrl Like is just funny to me.
Imma stop there because this is literally just the first ten minutes. Might make another one though!

Drabble request /nf (also I love your work so much)
Ambrosius is gathering files for something important, when he sees one form and has a full blown panic attack, partially because he’s exhausted, and ballister helps him :) (movie)
Hi hi! Sorry this took a actually forever, but since I have finally finished my long-form Goldenheart fic (!!!!) I can finally start addressing the drabble requests that have been rotting in my drafts!! I'm excited to show the movie boys some attention, I missed them. Please enjoy, hope it was worth the wait!
--
Ambrosius’s breath caught in his throat. He'd been awake for days trying to sort through Institute garbage, and this new document he'd found just dragged him back into all that horror.
It was from the Director's previously classified personal files, and it was old, from back when he and Bal were children. He knew the Director was evil, he could accept that now, however much it hurt, but this was too much.
It was a detailed plan, spanning several years. Cursive notes were scribbled across it. Outlined in the plan were weaknesses and opportunities she'd observed to kill Ballister.
Ambrosius’s throat was dry. Ballister was only thirteen when this was drafted. Notes that read things like “Poor swimming ability– pool accident?” And “Visits Danks on occasion, staged kidnapping possible” as well as other horrific things bored into his soul. It looked like she'd abandoned the plans only because she expected Ballister to fail out before being knighted, and thus didn't want to spare the trouble.
He shoved the paper back into the folder. He couldn't let Bal see it, he'd already been through so fucking much. Ambrosius couldn't breathe. He ran through every time he'd ever spoken to Bal about the Director.
“Teacher's Pet,” to which Ballister had responded with hopeful eyes, “You think I'm her favorite?”
“No one hates a hero of the realm.”
“They're going to love you, like I do.”
“I'm sure she's only giving you a more challenging exam because she knows how much more skilled than the rest of us you are!”
“Nobody besides Todd and those other jerk have any doubt about you deserving to be here.”
“She loves you, you’re her best student, I'm sure you just imagined it.”
All the while, she was planning to kill him, a child. Ambrosius sobbed. This was all his fault. If he hadn't been such a privileged asshole, if he hadn't been so unwilling to acknowledge how the adults he trusted since infancy could be cruel, if he'd just listened to the love of his life, he wouldn't have had to endure such horrific trauma, things may have been solved sooner, he wouldn't have–
His arm would still be attached to his body. Ambrosius dismissed all his problems and fears and then joined up with the people punishing him. He'd cut off his arm! He'd cut off his arm and Ballister almost died!
Ambrosius felt like he couldn't breathe. Everything inside him hurt, and his breath quickened. Keep it together, don't let him find you like this, this isn't his problem, but shockingly that didn't work.
He was a horrible person, a horrible partner, a horrible knight, he deserved to fucking die.
“Rose?” That soft voice came from the doorway. “Rose!” Ballister hurried to his side and cupped his cheek. Ambrosius hid his face into his hand. He couldn't talk, he couldn't breathe, he was terrified and angry and miserable all at once, it was just too much.
Ballister rubbed his back and wrapped his arms around him, resting his head on his shoulder. “I'm here, Rose. I love you.”
Ambrosius sobbed and wiped his face. Despite himself, he wrapped Ballister tightly in his arms and flopped his face against his chest, shaking. “I-I’m so sorry–” he choked. Ballister squeezed him. “Rose, shh, don't you worry about anything right now. Take a deep breath for me. Come on, in.” He stroked his back.
Ambrosius took a shaky breath in, it felt awful.
“Good, out.”
Ambrosius tried to follow his love’s instructions. Why was he being so nice!? Ambrosius thought about little Ballister, thrashing for help, drowning in a pool after the Director closed the cover on him, and it felt like he was the one drowning. He imagined little Ballister getting thrown into a bag somewhere in the Danks and being done away with, or pushed off the wall during a training inspection, or any of the other horrible things he'd read. He'd trusted the Director. How could he ever trust anyone again?
“Ambrosius, look at me.” Ballister's voice was gentle but stern. He held Ambrosius's face to make eye contact. “I know it's hard to breathe, I know you're scared and you feel bad, but you've been overworking yourself going through these old records. This isn't your job! You need to sleep.”
Ambrosius shook his head. “No– No you can't– you can't look at these–”
“We'll find someone else to do it, then. This burden shouldn't have fallen to you.” Ballister helped him up and hugged him, and Ambrosius hugged back, still shaking with panic and grief. Having Ballister in his arms, though, it made him feel a bit better. His body was thick, muscular, warm and alive. As long as Ballister was okay, things would be okay.
“I'm going to bring you some water, and then I'll lie with you. Okay?”
Ambrosius swallowed. “Okay.”
Everything still sucked, he was still an awful person, but if Ballister loved him and wanted to cuddle, Ambrosius could never turn away his strong arms.

I noticed some dialogue from the Nimona movie, and now I'm wondering if Ambrosius was bullied by the other Institute kids in his class. And did Ballister and Ambrosius end up so close, partially because they were ostracized together?
During that scene with the knights surveying the collapsed statues, Todd declares "This is his fault!" And then other knights joined in with Todd, to gang up on Ambrosius. You can hear them almost booing Ambrosius, while agreeing with Todd. The one clear "Tell him, Todd!" gets subtitled. But you can also hear "Yeah, that's right, Todd."
It sounded like all the other knights in Ambrosius's class were eagerly waiting for any excuse to attack him. Really sinks in the pressure Ambrosius felt to conform. They probably hated him because of the special treatment he gets as the direct descendent of Gloreth. Even in that very scene, the Director gives him special treatment, instantly giving him command of the mission to arrest Ballister, as soon as Ambrosius expresses interest in leading the mission. She even cites "We have a descendent of Gloreth to lead us!" Even though Todd was much more enthusiastic and probably reflected more of the same motivations/sentiments as the Director, she still chose the descendent of Gloreth.
Now it becomes clearer why Ballister and Ambrosius became close: They may have both been ostracized by the rest of their class, and only really had each other.
(Instagram post by the official storyboard artist estebravo mentions that Ambrosius and Bal met as children and agreed to go to school together, but I mean their likely mutual ostracization probably brought them even closer, since they would have been isolated together, from the rest of the class. https://www.instagram.com/p/CvK56M3vCEo/)
Tumblr media
Ballister gets ostracized because he was the one commoner, "intruding" upon a space filled with the nobility class. Ambrosius gets ostracized because, as the descendent of Gloreth, he was always going to get special treatment. And considering Ambrosius's lack of motivation to become a knight (citing estebravo's storyboards that were cut from the final movie), the rest of the class probably hated him even more. Ambrosius probably didn't have to work as hard as Ballister, to prove he was worth taking up his spot in the Institute class, but Ambrosius would have had to work hard to make the special treatment he was likely given, probably seem more earned. After all, if his skill could justify his special treatment, almost or as much as his status as Gloreth's descendent, then the rest of the class probably would have to admit it was at least partially valid.
That probably wouldn't stop the bullying, but it would probably stop the bullying from being overt, constant, or from as many classmates. They'd at least hesitate before sabotaging his equipment or something. Or they'd worry about the consequences of getting caught going after the Director's "golden student". Maybe it'd be enough to get half of the would-be bullies to chicken out.
On the other hand, if they couldn't take out their frustrations on Ambrosius, it just might make them take it out onto Ballister even more, since he was the more "acceptable" target. I wonder how often that gave Ambrosius a guilt trip, or motivated him to beat them up in return. Imagine little Ambrosius having another parent-teacher conference in the Director's office because he keeps getting into fights, "disgracing Gloreth's legacy", and disappointing his parents, who I assume are very invested in their pride as Gloreth's descendants. No wonder Ballister has to hold Ambrosius back from defending him in the movie. Not just because Ballister cares about Ambrosius getting into trouble, but also because the ones Ambrosius beats up, probably come back to bully Ballister even harder for it. It's a bad cycle, that I'm sure they learn to navigate better as they grow older. Unfortunate they act like they have to placate it, even during that "locker room" scene.
I've heard some reaction videos call Ambrosius his class's number two knight, after Ballister. But if they're referring to ranking by skill level, I realized, do we ever actually hear the movie state Ambrosius's skill ranking, compared to his classmates? We know Ballister was number one, and he worked harder than everyone else. But I like the idea that Ambrosius would have also worked hard to make his special treatment seem justified. Maybe not just to keep off the bullying, but maybe also to prove it to himself. Maybe with Ballister's personal training being so demonstrably effective, Ambrosius would have asked Ballister to help him train, get tips, or just spar together a lot. If Ambrosius trained most often with Ballister, then I could believe Ambrosius as the second most skilled knight in his class.

Nimona appreciation post (Part 3 of idk even know how many)
Tumblr media
Hi guys, I'm back with Part 3. Sorry about the delay, I tend to procrastinate even if something has to do with my newest hyperfixation lol (Pic for attention, like always lol)
at the beginning he says to Amb that he's not brooding and now he tells Nimona that "Knights don't mope, they brood."
"Murder him, murdder her, murder everyone!" aaand there is Amb standing int the door and Bals pose XD
Amb lil smile when he sees Bal. He probably thought that he killed Bal and seems glas that he's not
Also him just looking at Bals arm
Nimonas lil "Gesundheit" is way better in the english version ngl
Nemesis 😈
"Oh, look! It's Gloreth!" and the knights behind them actually look in the direction she pointed at
Amb acting like he was about to draw his sword and looking like they just caught him doing something forbidden like I don't even know
Bals almost defeated face at the beginning of the closet scene
Nimona just casually ripping that pipe out of the wall
Bals hamster cheeks when she grabs his face
that die-in-the-closet-dialogue felt very strange to me but I still don't completely understand how people can hate people who have a different orientation than them (sexual or not, I don't know how to say that exactly but I hope you kinda understand me?). There shouldn't be a problem about dying in a closet in real life and I really understand why people are so close-minded and this is still happening, I guess. Why does this "kids movie" motivate me to think about this kind of issue so much? But I guess it's a good thing, I'm probably/definitely not the only one who watched Nimona and really started to think about this (and the other themes of this movie)
also Nimona literally coming out of the closet (as a shape-shifter) is like really nice, I love little things like that in movies that you maybe not even register at first
I like to think that the axe opening the door is a little "Shining" reference
Nimona casually catching the arrow before her face
Bal being the competent idiot that he is grabbing the first thing his hand finds to use as a weapon without even looking
"Even if you see the horn?"
"I will not freak… Uhhh" with that face XD
I just looove her line "This is the part where you run.", how she looks at the knights and how they start to panic
Bals face while getting out of the closet is like: What the everloving hell did just happen/is just happening?
"Yeah" "Oh no! Stay away! Get back! No! This is not happening!" XD
Amb just being bamboozled and proving that he's at least a bit of a Nerd (who other then a Nerd or a Zoologist would call a Rhino by it's full name)
"Leave that guy alone!" "Take that" bonks him away with her horn lol, they are such a good duo
Stairs are either your best friend (Nimona seemingly) or your worst enemy (Kungfu Panda)
Bal just being completely like a fish out of water by what is happening during that chase is also kinda hilarious
Also him still having the brain to tell her she needs to go right in all of this mayhem is very competent of him, I stan him just a bit ngl
the whale
hey def needed a meeting table that round, they are a kingdom of knights
loving that Todd gets the tiny d*** joke, one of the best jokes in the movie and this movie has a lot of good ones
THE MUSIC <3
Now he wants the staircase, Bal really should make up his mind XD
I'm a bit sad that the original BlueSky-Scene where she changes into a dragon didn't make it in there but this is also fine, I guess
How did Bal survive that fall?
also loving how he just slides the last few metres face down lol
Nimona looking at Bal before she says her "Something, something, something, we win." was kinda cute
Explosions! "Metal" Also: stuff like this reminds me of a kind of old scetch from a comedian (I know the guy from some youtube vids of different poetry slams but he is a comedian now) I like pertaining bear catapults (I def will get myself some tickets if he ever does a show near me, the guy is hilarious)
Bal looking kinda chill (he prob has a concussion and isn't quite there, I guess) at the different things that fly towards them and then focusing on that little bit of debris that knocks him out (and the sound he makes when he gets hit) lol
Sooo, that was it for part 3. Short I know, but I think I will try to get these posts out and ngl my attention span is a bit short at the moment… with this kind of post thats more on the short site I believe I can stay on the topic and not procrastinate that much. Maybe there will also be some longer ones inbetween, we will see. Have a good one guys ^^

I wrote this in my notes app, but here’s stinky ballister and awkward goldenheart with a dash of overthinking ambrosius:
As ballister turned to face me I could see the pain on his face, the heartbreak. He collapses into my arms and onto my bad shoulder, not that I mind, and lets out a sob before passing out. I look out beyond the wall and shake my head in disbelief, no monsters, just- wilderness. It was only after my adrenaline calmed down before I smelled it, well correction, smelled bal. It made sense he’d smell, he wouldn’t have been able to wash but he smelled really bad.
I somehow managed to carry him home and lay him down  before running a bath, not too hot not too cold. Only one pump of bubble bath and half a scoop of bath salts. He was very particular about how he liked his baths, never understood why. Once it’s run I went back into the bedroom and gently shake him awake.
“Bal? Can you wake up?”
Ballister stirs in his sleep and wakes up.
“What.”
“I- I’ve made you a bath… you kind of smell…”
“Thanks”
Shit did I upset him?.. he hates me even more now doesn’t he? Oh fuck I’ve screwed up again I shouldn’t have said anything shit.
“Ambrosius you look constipated, stop” ballister says slightly concerned “I didn’t mean thanks in a rude way I just meant- never mind”
“…..”
“….”
Ballister coughs “so um”
“Right! Bath…”
“Yeah”
“….”
This is awkward.
“Can- can you help me I’m.. I’m tired and I. I’d like help”
I try not to smile.
“Of course I’ll help!” “Do you want me to stay here while you change?”
“Sure”
“Call me in when you ready k?”
He nods
Once he leaves I burry my face in my hands, I’m such a fucking idiot.
“Uhh ambrosius? I- I’m uh”
“Coming!”
Ballister is sitting in the bath… he looks so tired and worn down and his torso is beaten and bruised, my blood boils.
“Who hit you?!”
“Todd”
“Fucking Todd I swear- ugh I’m glad he face planted into that sign”
I glance at his right arm or what’s left of it.
“Bal I’m so so sorry I- I was an asshole and you deserved so much better than how I treated you. I can’t apologise enough and I don’t deserve your forgiveness so after this if you don’t want to carry on this relationship I understand and I-“
“No… no I don’t want you to leave, not again”
“But-“
He puts a cloth in my hand.
“You’d said you’d help” he says with a small smile playing on his lips.
“I did didnt I?”  I sigh, Smiling softly.

Hey.... Heyyyyyy.... How y'all doing.... take the Nimona headcanons that have been rotting in my notes app for the past four months
Ambrosius has kept track of the weirdest things he’s signed for a fan
At the very tippy top is a dinner plate a dog crate and a baby
And by baby I do mean living breathing crying baby
He tried really hard to find something else to sign but for some reason the parents were really insistent on it being their baby
And for some reason he did it
There are hundreds of photos of this infant with a signature on his forehead
And that kid to this day will whip out his baby photos and show people that he was that baby
Multiple knights (cough cough Todd) tried to recreate that situation but it didn’t have the same effect
I feel like Bal gets really bad migraines (which kind of comes with the territory of using your head like a bartering ram)
And when they do happen Nimona and Ambrosius do everything in their power to make sure that it doesn’t get worse
I feel like Ambrosius is stupidly good at video games
I have this little headcanon that books and games were kind of an escape for him
His own personal little oasis from being the golden child with a million expectations and responsibilities on his back
He's not very good at playing with other people tho because he was always scared people would figure out who he was just based on his voice alone (and he’s not wrong for thinking that)
Nimona is also really good at video games (I mean she’s also half of the reason they were invented but that’s a long ass story)
So because I’ve been away for so long I wanted to bless you with my friend's reaction to the movie
Just for some context tho it did take us months to finish because we all have work and school and we couldn’t see each other for a while so if I missed some stuff I’ll add it later
“Aw boyfriends” (When they were on the catwalk)
“Why are they so cute” “they’re literally my otp” and “they have cute banter” (The entire time before the knighting ceremony)
JB: “Oh she’s got Daddy issues huh” Me: “why do you say that?” JB “cause why else would she follow a man”(As they’re walking through the kingdom)
JB: “God what a fake fucking bitch I hate the way she talks” (As the director is scolding the knights)
“He knows him so well”(He hates freestyle jazz)
“It’s his boyfriend” “aw bae why’d you throw a smoke bomb at me” “look how frantic he is to find him” “he can’t shoot look at that face” (the entire subway/market scene”)
JB: “I think this scene is curing her daddy issues and yours” (the alley scene)
(Same scene) KO: “why is he acting like it’s hurting him more?” Me: “Cause that’s his kid” KO: “wow this really is healing your daddy issues”
JB: “What am I even watching?” “I fucking knew it she was such a fake bitch” (The squires video)
“Oh my god he’s so embarrassing” “is he really jealous of a kid” “oh my god the director really doesn’t give a fuck huh?” “He didn’t say that out loud” “but does she?” “No” (Ambrosius freak out)
JJ: “oh my god this is like Archane” Me: “shut the fuck up about Archane” (in my defense he kept mentioning Archane the whole time)
“If I could turn into a dragon I’d never turn back” “same I’d love to breathe cereal” (during the fight)
“He’s so embarrassing why is he dying that dramatic” (proceeds to make fun of Ambrosius' “death” the whole time)
“Did they really upload her confession to their version of YouTube” “is his account name really BalliSTAR?” “Why are they dancing?” “His username is Loins_of_gold? Why is he such a dork??”
JB: “Awe nachos are totally their thing” “he remembered he’s allergic he still loves him!”
JJ: “he’s a knight?” Me “have you been watching this movie with your eyes closed?”
And then we freaked out about Ambrosius saying I love you and Bal not saying it back
We said nothing when Bal pulled a sword on Nimona they kind of just sat shocked
JB kept mentioning the flashback and after it happened all I said was “you wanted the flashback there’s your fucking flashback” while she sat in sad silence
They also just kept saying in shock “that’s her? That’s Gloreth” while I laughed
We kind of spent the rest of the movie in silence until Bal and Ambrosius kissed at the end and then everyone collectively lost their shit
They lost their shit again when Nimona showed back up and JB went upstairs because even tho Nimona came back to life she was still sad

A tragedy in a rooftop.
“Do you bring all the girls you like here?”
Ambrosius laughed, face going red. Standing next to him, Ballister waited for an answer, raising one of his eyebrows.
The best view in the city — a wonderful sunset, pink and orange and soft and fiery — was right in front of them, yet he couldn't tear away his eyes from Ballister's face. How pathetic, one can be, when one is in love.
“So? Is this a kissing spot or something?” Questioned Ballister, trying to be brave.
“Do you want it to be?” Answered Ambrosius, trying to be smart.
Ballister stopped, blushing, and they looked at each other. The light, warm and cozy and ethereal and divine surrounded them, filled them with a sense of peace that can only be given by the heavens, by the clouds, by the universe. It can only be obtained at the exact hour in which the fire of the sun decides to paint the sky pink, and bathes the whole world in doing so. This one could've been a love story, a happy story, if only the rosy lights gave them a bit more of courage, if only the world didn't take so many things away from them.
But their fates have been chosen, already. And I'm sorry. They have been chosen by their ages, by their status, by their bodies and by their parents. By me and by you, and by all the tragedies that have ever been written before.
Under their shoes, the cold, dry concrete seemed to disappear. The rooftop they were standing on — one of an abandoned house, one of what used to be a home — wobbled when they looked at each other. Over their heads, the sun and the moon shared the place, shared the canvas, as if allowing the other to be here and witness the ending of the day, the start of a night. They said hello to one another, and in the same breath, said goodbye.
“I'm not sure” admitted Ballister, after what could've been minutes, could've been years, “I'm not sure of many things lately, I think. Not with you”
And this was hilarious — because Ambrosius wasn't sure, either. He wasn't sure of what to do, what to say, what to expect, what to ask for. They'd met merely a year ago, and he was already so deep down on this, so deeply in love with this boy, that nothing seemed to matter. Not his reputation, not his parents, not his mother's quietly disappointed stare that came with a cross or his father's icy demeanor that accompanied him all the way from Asia when he talked about gayness, not his classmates, not Todd Sureblade or the director or the world. Not himself.
“I've never kissed a girl” he admitted, because Ballister had asked him. Then, with a quivering voice, he added, “I've never even liked a girl, Bal”
Which was a bit conflicting to admit, specially given his reputation as a womanizer. You and I would know that it's a lie, that it's based on rumors and gossip. The world, however, does not. The world is unaware of how Ambrosius can only love in shadows, how his romances are doomed to be no more whispers and stolen kisses. And he intends to keep his secrets, to take them with him to the grave.
“Can't be” Ballister shook his head, as if he knew better. Ambrosius hated him, for a split second. Look at me and believe in my words, he wanted to say, but he stayed still, “you can't say that, Ambrosius. Not here”
“Why not?”
Mother, why not? Why couldn't he, world? What did he do, to deserve this fate? To be sixteen and so tired and so in love and so defeated? What did he do, sun, to be born with so many expectations that his back was already giving up from carrying the weight of his parent's dreams?
If the fire had been able to talk, it might have consoled him. It might have done what his mother didn't, what his father tried to do.
“Because that will give me ideas” pleaded Ballister, tears stuck on his heart, his lungs, his eyes.
And why, moon, why did he have to be born with so many thoughts and so little pennies? Why did the world insist upon placing everything he wanted in front of him and yanking it right off of his hands? This year everything was supposed to turn around, to change. He came here looking for an opportunity, clinging with tooth and nail to a scholarship, but he'd found a boy and so many problems. Why couldn't he just get by, keep on? Why couldn't he just adapt, move along?
“What kind of?”
Ambrosius took one step forward, Ballister backed away. The concrete under them used to be the place where Ambrosius's played in, as a kid, and it was now merely a spectator of the endeavors of two teens. They'd moved years ago, but sometimes, some days, he could still hear his mother laughing and his father singing in the kitchen.
“Don't do this to me. Please, Ambrosius. Don't-”
He couldn't do this again. Teenhood — specially that weird place between sixteen and seventeen where everything feels too intensely and everyone loves too deeply — is definitely not the place to put your heart out, to play with it. Ballister's been under rooftops like this a thousand times, a thousand homes that he got in and out and ripped away from and saved from and ran from.
“I want to” admitted Ambrosius, and he wanted so many things that it felt ridiculous to even dream of them, but this, he could have. He knew he could, and he wasn't going to give up. “I want you”
Ballister wasn't used to being wanted, so it was natural for him to shake his head and laugh, because this wasn't funny, it was terrific. Ambrosius Goldenloin was supposed to be an asshole, a complete idiot, a stupid flirt and a heartless arrogant boy. That's what they said about him.
But didn't they lie all the time? Didn't the same mouths that called Ambrosius all those things lie about Ballister, too? Didn't they call him a thief and a cheater, a scammer and a danger, harmful and useless? Didn't you hear the same rumors about him? What was he supposed to believe in — the mocks in the halls or the pleads on the rooftops?
“You can't” he tried, tried to save himself from this, from falling, “You can't want me, Ambrosius. This isn't fair”
But the world, in all of its years, has never been known for its fairness, and Ambrosius stood there, heart bleeding with feelings.
Oh, the tragedy to be sixteen and be in love. The tragedy to be something you're not supposed to be, something no one wants you to be. The tragedy to love and be loved back in a world where love like yours is supposed to be punished, hidden, whispered about.
He tried to take a step forward, kiss Ballister, like in the movies. The sunset would be the only witness of their love, their hearts. Ballister took another step back, avoiding Ambrosius. The world would be the judge of their love, and he already knew what the verdict would be.
“Why can't you just leave me alone?”
He didn't want to be alone, that was the problem. He wanted to be loved, to love him back. But he was tired of the hidden smiles, of pretending, of putting up an act. He deserved to be loved in public, didn't he? He wanted to be with him, yes. He didn't want the shadows that came with that premise.
“Because I love you"
He needed this. He needed to tell someone that he loved them and mean it. Not like his mother and her disapproval or his father and his disinterest. He wanted to be himself, in a secluded corner of the world. He didn't want to deal with the problems, the stares, the questions.
Ballister understood, at that moment, that sometimes love isn't enough. He hated the shadows he'd been born in, and Ambrosius loathed the spotlight that followed him around ever since he was brought onto this world. They loved each other and hated their own realities, and sometimes there's nothing that can be done. He could choose this, or he could walk away.
He didn't want to do either of them. He didn't even want this. He just wanted to graduate, to be valedictorian, to be able to take care of himself, to be believed. He wanted to be wanted and cherished. What a tragedy, it was, that they loved each other under the wrong conditions.
The last sun rays of the day lightened up Ambrosius, his white jacket and blond hair making him so much like an angel, like a star. Like something shiny and perfect and meant to be appreciated but not had.
And Ballister understood. With the sun and the moon as his witnesses, he turned around.
He had a life — a choice to make. He had a little sister waiting at home, even if neither one of them knew their parents and home was not a place but each other, he had work to do, even if he was already tired of everything, of everyone. He had dignity, even if the world tried to stripe it away from him time and time again.
He was meant for one life. Ambrosius, for another. What a tragedy, it was, that they loved each other.
Perhaps the next time. Perhaps in another life. Perhaps in another genre of history, they would be able to hold one another in the broad daylight and kiss and laugh and love. But this one is a tragedy, and the ending was already chosen, reader. We can be sorry, but that won't change that this one is a tragedy, and he isn't going to wait around and see who dies on this one. He'd lost too much, already, to risk losing himself to a love hidden in shadows and a lover bathed in light.
The sun settled, and the moon was the last one to ever see them together. What a tragedy, she thought. Perhaps in another time.
This is also on AO3!!

Im going to watch nimona again after this so don't be surprised if you see me adding reblogs of little details that absolutely ruin my brain in the best of ways
The way that the animals just instinctively knew nimona was different from them really breaks my heart
The animation was so so so so lovely! You could just tell the team really put their heart and soul into this movie!!!
I don't know if the story was matching the book (I will soon though I'm ordering that baby) but it was really lovely to watch this movie!
It matched my expectations! I wish there was more! Honestly I think nimona would have been perfect as a mini series! Not because the pacing was bad!!! I just wished we could have had more time with these characters you know!!
There was careless whisper in this movie?
WAIT FOCUS okay so like I think It would have been amazing if we could have sat with the characters more you know? In just really sad that the sorry had to be so fast paced because of the constraints
Damn that's alot of babies
Yeeeeeesssss I love nimona
I like that there was a thing at the end but I would have liked if it had been at the start of the credits but also that's not the creators that's prolly a sucky Netflix thing
I loved this movie
I will in fact be worshipping this movie until I'm sick of it just like strange world
I LOVED strange world and now I've watched it so many times that I feel like a parent that's and to watch frozen a billion times
Anyways...
Take care everyone and anyone sees this post! You are loved! Please stay safe! This world sucks ass but there are good things to!

Hi! Here's some more stuff I noticed/wanted to point out in Nimona.
Nimona Spoilers!
Bal putting a protective arm in front of Nimona when Ambrosius asks who she is.
Everyone (the Director, Amb, and even the knights in the background) lean back when they realize that Nimona isn't human.
Nimona's frown that appears as soon as Ambrosius raises his sword, only to then turn into a sad, almost disappointed expression. She's disappointed because in a thousand years, nothing has changed, and history is just repeating itself at this point. Bal is framed for the murder of the queen and Nimona gets attacked, defends herself and then gets blamed for the damage. They then both look towards people they trust for help (Bal begging Amb to trust him and Nimona turning towards Gloreth once she's calmed down) only to have a sword pointed towards them ("Arrest them" and "Go back to the shadows from whence you came")
Facial expressions during the "Arrest them" scene. Bal looks betrayed and confused, like he doesn't believe Amb wouldn't ever trust him. Nimona looks hurt, but resigned, as if she expected this. Right before he says the words, Amb looks like he's about to cry, like he doesn't want to do it (which he probably doesn't) but has no choice (which he doesn't considering there's at least thirty other knights around them plus the Director). Meanwhile, the total opposite of everyone else's expressions, the Director looks pleased. You'd imagine she'd be hurt upon facing the arrest of the boy she's cared about and trained all these years, but she just looks pleased, almost proud, because her plan is working, as even someone such as Ambrosius, who knew Bal better than anyone, has turned on him.
The way Bal and Nimona just easily fall into battle, fighting alongside each other without missing a step, as if it's something they've been doing for years, or as if they're reading each other's minds.
Right before really starting to fight Ambrosius, a knight charges at Bal and he just, punches him without even looking back, which really goes to show how much he deserved his "top of the class" title, and that's just one example.
Bal being the one who attacks while Amb spends most of their fight defending. Also, Bal not taking back his comments about Nimona when she comes running by acting like a child, and instead adding onto those with "And she has my back. Unlike you." And just imagine how hurt Amb must be because, again, he probably doesn't want to arrest Bal, but just doesn't have a choice.
When Todd grabs Bal and drags him away and through the streets, I'm pretty sure he causes an accident, which just gives us another reason to hate him as a few civilians were most likely injured.
When the car is heading towards the kid, there's a knight standing there, but instead of saving the kid, he just runs away, and it's Nimona that ends up stopping the car, and yet even after doing that and shifting into what was probably intended as a non-threatening form, the kid still points a sword towards her and calls her a monster, proving to Nimona, once again, that in a thousand years, nothing has changed, and everyone, even kids, are just brainwashed people who are scared of what they don't know, and so react how they were taught to; hate.
Nimona saying she doesn't needs Bal's help because she's survived a thousand years without anyone's help and has learned to take care of herself.
"Kids. Little kids. They grow believing that they can be a hero if they drive a sword into the heart of anything different. And I'm the monster?" Two things to say about this. One, we have to remember that Nimona is talking to Ballister Boldheart, the commoner who wanted to be a knight and managed to be top of his class at the Institute. Killing monsters to become hero must've been what he believed at some point to want to become a knight, and that ideology was most likely forced into his brain while training at the Institute, and now he'd forced to reconsider that as someone wildly different opens his eyes to the real world. Secondly, it's that last phrase, "And I'm the monster?" because I want to put this in real life. This example is kind of obvious, but take the LGBT+ community. All we ask is basically to let us be who want to be, let us love who we want to love, and basically just accept us into society. Meanwhile, in the past LGBT+ people were killed in the past because they were different, people are yelled slurs at for being themselves in public, teens are kicked out of their homes by homophobic parents. And we're the monsters? The weirdos? The ones who are going to hell because we're "sinners"? Just wanted to put that in perspective.
Right after that, Nimona talks about how she sometimes just wants to let people kill her, basically saying she is, although not directly, considering suicide. For a thousand years, she's been piling all of this up, and although Bal betraying her at the end wasn't the main cause for her going to the statue, he was probably the one thing that was too much and made everything she's been balancing for all these years tumble down.
When Bal's talking about going over the wall, he's saying it not because he's tired of staying in a kingdom that hates him, but because he sees that the inside of the wall isn't safe for Nimona. He's ready to overcome his fears for her safety. On the other hand, Nimona doesn't acknowledge him until he outright says that they'll leave together. That's when she looks up at him and mutters "Together?" and when she says it, it just sound so hopeful, and it breaks my heart everytime.
When Bal says "We can't change the way people see us" Nimona seemingly takes a moment to think before saying that he changed the way he saw her, and when he confirms that, and I feel like I can just see a spark of hope in her at the thought that maybe, just maybe, if someone cans see her as someone worth caring for, protection and acceptance, perhaps other people could, which probably makes his betrayal towards the end hurt all the more.
This one is darker than my other ones and I elaborate a lot more on the things I point out, but I just really needed to talk about these specific scenes, so I still hope you enjoyed. I just love this movie and all the subtext that comes with it and what it means to different people who relate to so many different aspects of it, and yet still holds an important place in so many people's live, both as a comic and as a movie, but in different ways. But, yeah, hope you enjoyed and I just love this movie.

Nimona OC - Charlotte Swiftheart/Corova - Kid Stuff (First Meetings)
Hi, so, remember when I said I might write some random scenes from throughout Charlotte's life? Well, here we go. Her first meetings with Ballister and Ambrosius. Enjoy!
Original Charlotte Post
Recent Charlotte Post (Art)
As Charlotte turns to search the canteen for somewhere to sit, she spots him. Ballister Blackheart. Her eyes widen, and she barely stops herself from rushing across the room. Instead, she takes normal, medium speed strides toward him, food tray clutched in her hands. When she reaches the table, he doesn’t look at her, and tilts her head for a moment before clearing her throat. When he looks up at her, she recognizes the defensive, guarded look in his eyes. It’s a look that’s all too common on the streets, for kids and adults alike. She tries for a smile, then nods toward the bench across from him.
“May I sit?” she asks. The question seems to surprise him, as his eyes widen and the guarded look goes away. His mouth opens for a moment, but then he closes it again and nods, looking back at his food and quickly stuffing a bite in his mouth. She carefully sits down across from him, and she starts to eat too. She doesn’t scarf it down like she’s more accustomed to doing—she has to look like she’s used to getting three meals a day instead of one and a half if she’s lucky—but she still takes quick bites. Once she finishes chewing her fourth or fifth bite, she clears her throat again. “I know that you’re Ballister, but my name is Charlotte. It’s nice to meet you.” Ballister peaks up from under some of his long hair, big brown eyes staring at her for a moment.
“I-”
“Hey, Swifty!” Charlotte jumps and snaps her head around as a hand lands roughly on her shoulder. The big brunette boy, which she recognizes from some of her classes as Todd, smirks down at her. “What are you doing sitting with the dirty commoner? Can’t you smell him?” She frowns at him.
“I don’t smell anything other than your bad breath, Todd. Besides, what does it matter if he’s a commoner? I can sit with whoever I want,” she says. Todd sqauwks, dropping his hand from her shoulder and glaring at her. After a moment, though, he just scoffs.
“Whatever, Swifty. Have fun with Bal-loser,” he says, smacking the side of her head and laughing as he and his friends walk off. Charlotte rubs her ear and glares after him, then turns back toward Ballister.
“I hate him already,” she says. Ballister is staring at her with a contemplative, almost suspicious look in his eyes.
“Why are you sitting with me?” he asks. She sits up a bit straighter and leans forward.
“Are you kidding? Why wouldn’t I? You’re amazing!” she says, grinning at him. He blinks at her for a moment, taken aback by her enthusiasm.
“You think so?” he asks. She nods.
“Of course! You’re super brave! I admire you a lot!” At that, a smile cracks his lips.
“You do?” She nods again, keeping her enthusiasm, and he gives her a somewhat sheepish grin.
“Thanks.” He brushes some of his hair behind his ear. “It was Charlotte, right?”
“Mhm!” She nods again, and Ballister holds out his hand across the table. She takes it, and they shake hands.
“Nice to meet you, Charlotte.”
It takes all of two days for Charlotte and Ballister to become glued at the hip. If they can be together, they are. Luckily, they seem to share a large majority of their classes, and their training slot at the end of the week matches up too. In the short span of time since they met, Charlotte’s gotten to know Ballister, and she enjoys him a lot. Even though he’s quiet around most of the other students, she finds that he has a great, witty sense of humor, and he’s very passionate about the things he likes. When Todd and the others aren’t pestering him, he’s fun to be around. Bright, lively. Everything she’s always wanted in a friend. They’re walking in the direction of their next class, with Charlotte chattering away about the teacher in her mathematics class and how strange he is. However, she’s cut off when Ballister suddenly trips, the stack of books and papers in his arms going scattering to the floor.
“Hey, watch where you’re going, street rat!” Todd sneers, before he and his friends start to laugh. Charlotte glares at him.
“That was so dumb! What are you, five?” she exclaims. Todd just blows a raspberry at her and he and his group start walking off. Charlotte turns back toward Ballister and hurries to help him gather his things. “Todd’s the worst.” She glances over her shoulder at Todd’s retreating back. She’s also just in time to see Todd trip as someone sticks their foot out. Todd faceplants, and the boy who tripped him puts his hands over his mouth, a look of pure, fake innocence on his face.
“Good Gloreth, are you okay, Todd? You should really look where you’re going!” he says. Todd grumbles, as he pushes himself up, shooting a glare at the boy before he stalks off, his friends close behind him. Charlotte can’t help but smirk as she turns back to helping Ballister with his things, and they eventually get everything back in a neat stack and stand up. “Hey, are you okay?” They both turn, and the same boy that tripped Todd is standing a few feet away. It’s not just any boy, though. It’s Ambrosius Goldenloin.
“I’m fine. You didn’t have to do that,” Ballister says. Ambrosius puts on another mask of confused innocence.
“Do what?” he asks. He and Ballister look at each other for a moment, then the facade breaks and Ambrosius giggles. “It’s okay, it was fun. Todd’s a total jerk.”
“I know, right? I wish I’d gotten to trip him!” Charlotte says. Ambrosius looks over at her, eyes bright.
“Did you see the look on his face?” She nods, a big smile on her face. Before they can say more, the warning bell rings, and Charlotte looks at Ballister.
“We better go,” he says. She nods, then glances at Ambrosius.
“You’re in our class, right? Do you want to walk with us?” she asks. Ambrosius seems to light up even more at that.
“Yeah!” They turn and start walking in the direction of their classroom, following the last straggler students and running through the only partially needed introductions between the three of them.

Being a Grumpy Old Man about Nimona
Forewarning, I’m gonna levy some criticisms against a very gorgeous movie with some decent representation and ambitious themes. I’m open to discussion about why I’m wrong, but I’m going to be very opinionated here.
Tumblr media
Starting with the things I really liked about this movie:
The art direction was stellar. I loved the way everything looked and particularly Nimona’s eyes. Whichever team drew and animated this thing deserves the payout they get and more.
I also really like that Bal and Goldenloin are just gay. It’s not a big deal, they simply are because they’re people and people are allowed to be people.
This movie is also pretty funny. I felt like Todd was a bit much in places, particularly in the part where Nimona first turns. It kind of undercut a moment. But the humour was pretty good overall. One of my favourite jokes will always been “I’m not a girl, I’m a shark!”
Tumblr media
Now on to the complaints. And it’s really just one complaint: there are no other monsters.
This creates a failing of the movie in two realms, plot and theme. The plot is the lesser of the two evils so I will start with that.
For 1000 years, the Institution heralded itself as the bastion between humankind and monsters. They maintained the wall and had pseudocelebrities in the knights who were also trained and deadly. Where this gets weird for me is that the Director really seems to believe that there are monsters out there in the valley. All the knights, while cocky and pompous, are fundamentally good people and they all truly believe there are monsters out there. But there’s just Nimona.
I understand that the whole “she was scheming and lying to keep power for herself” plot is kind of played out, but it’s played out for a reason. People do that. They leverage the fear of the unknown to maintain dominion over those without the courage or resources to disprove them. But the movie did not have to use that plot if they had simply included a scene of other monsters. Without that, this entire kingdom just seems ridiculous.
Or perhaps if they had lessened the timeline. One thousand years seems like a very long time to be afraid of nothing especially when you have the technology to prove it. But like I said, this was the weaker of the two issues.
Tumblr media
Nimona (the movie) seems to have been going for a theme of “the monster is the other” and judging from a couple other people’s takes, that’s what they got from it. It depicts a culture that hates something they do not understand and reviling someone they think is undeserving of personhood. There is even an implication of the readiness to accept homosexuality vs transgenderism as one may be easier to stomach than the other. And depicting that transgender individuals are more a danger to themselves (via self harm from societal pressure) than to other people.
Good stuff.
Then we get to Nimona’s sacrifice.
I don’t think she should have done it. Perhaps she did it with the knowledge she would survive and so she was doing a nice thing for the sake of being nice, but I personally think Nimona should have let them die especially since, in her human form, there’s no way that gun was going to hit her if she just grabbed Bal and flew away.
There’s a couple movies that do this thing where the hated group must first prove that they are worthy of not being mistreated before the group in charge decides to change. How to Train Your Dragon does this, as does Astro Boy and Monsters vs Aliens. That doesn’t make these movies bad, far from it, these movies are great. In the case of Nimona, however, I would have liked to see something different especially how the comic ended.
Tumblr media
Brief tangent for the comic.
The comic fixed my lack of monsters issue on page 1. The general vibe is that monsters exist, Nimona is just weird for a monster. We never see these other monsters, but the comic states definitively that they are real and even shapeshifters are fairly common, just that none can do what Nimona can do.
And the issue of needing to earn personhood is not present as Nimona “dies” trying to kill everyone after the pain and betrayal get to be too much for her. Even after that though, Bal is in her corner, demanding that she not be referred to as a monster. Nimona has killed a lot of people and even at the end, with her mental faculties intact, she chooses destruction; she is still treated as someone who is deserving of love. This was even before Bal finds out that she is still alive. To quote the 12th Doctor “Do you think that I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?”
Back to the show!
Tumblr media
Why Nimona sacrificing herself presents such a problem for me is that now the kingdom does not have to confront their predjudice. They get to put up a mural and say how much they loved Nimona and how great she was... but they didn’t know her. I believe Bal misses her, but the rest of the people are just putting on airs.
Especially since Nimona is a whole person. Before the sacrifice, she was not easy to digest. She’s extremely violent, rude and destructive and her powers exacerbate that. And it’s kind of objectively concerning that she can simply become anyone at anytime. But she died and the people can just say “yeah, we fixed racism. It was pretty cool” and they don’t have to grapple with the fact that Nimona is not quiet or personable like they would want her to be.
Having other monsters fixes this because then the people do have to live with these issues. They have to confront the beings they had been abusing for generations and thefact that they have personality quirks as wild and random as any human. At the end of the movie, there is the illusion of change, but there’s no real way to prove it without it being tested.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, there were a lot of things I liked about this movie, but I think they tried too hard to talk about something that they were not commited enough to explore. The question I would ask the movies is: would Nimona still be worthy of personhood if she had not been willing to sacrifice herself for the people who hated her?
Ultimately, the film oversimplifies a complex issue. The Director being the sole bad apple in the Institution and Nimona being willing to let go of her anger first shows a kind of wishful thinking in the eyes of the oppressor, that the hated and the reviled must first prove themselves worthy of love and then that the root of the danger of -isms and -phobias is a single person who can be ousted.

THE DIVINE STAR OF AZURA
Tumblr media
"Molag Bal wanted my mind, Boethiah wanted my arms, and Nocturnal perhaps my curiosity. Azura wants all of that, and our love above all. Not our abject slavering, but our honest and genuine caring in all its forms. It is important to her that our emotions be engaged in her worship. And our love must also be directed inward. If we love her and hate ourselves, she feels our pain. I will, for all time, have no other mistress."
Call me Azurite or Morgana if you so wish, this is my elder scrolls / Azura sideblog. This will be a collection of my upg, thoughts, and everything else I wish to put about my blossoming practice. This is rather new territory to me, so I am very excited to begin exploring!
obviously DNI if you don’t support TES paganism. Todd Howard is certainly a man of time.
