"i've wasted a lifetime pretending to be me" (2013 - Emily Horne and Joey Comeau) / "da oracle" (2020 - Anatola Howard (maroonracoon))
I'VE WASTED A LIFETIME PRETENDING TO BE ME: a softer world is one of those things that i felt like i was seeing imitators around every corner for years. what are we in the dark? maybe we're a christmas tree glowing softly. maybe not. (@kaerran)
DA ORACLE: this comic by maroonracoon messes me up but in such a pleasant way. i think this comic speaks for itself. i have my atoms reworked and reconfigured every time i see this comic. (@godsbride)
("i've wasted a lifetime pretending to be me" is comic #1010 of the webcomic a softer world by Emily Horne and Joey Comeau. It ran from 2003 to 2015.
"da oracle" is a comic by Anatola Howard (maroonracoon on twitter) and the artist's self-proclaimed favourite.)

i love the offbeat tenderness in anatola howard’s comics. they leave you with something on the precipice, wanting more to expand on the scenarios. but you can’t - the fact that they’re tiny tiny glimpse into other peoples lives is integral!

I find myself periodically thinking about maroonracoon / anatola howard's old games from yesterdecade...4 lung boy and pen pals(pen palz?) are important artifacts of tumblrina culture. unique and unparalleled in their atmosphere, unreplicable products of their time.

do you have any specific art inspirations ?
Yes very much! From a variety of mediums too <3 I read lots of comics as a kid my favorites of which were Calvin and Hobbes (bill waterson) and Mutts (Patrick McDonnell). I even named my cat mooch after the cat from mutts lol. Those were the styles I tried to emulate most for a long ass time but recently I’ve also been old enough to start delving into the works of R. Crumb. REALLY divisive figure and I wouldn’t recommend checking his art out unless youre prepared to see some really disturbing shit. But it’s all got a style I love dearly
Online artist wise I’ve got a couple!! Namely Anatola Howard (or @/maroonracoon on here) and @/aduantach on twitter. For that second person I’ve actually got a side blog dedicated to archiving his moomin art from his tumblr days but im not spilling much until it’s fully tagged
For how much I talk about cartoons I actually don’t feel like a lot inspired what I make now. I mean id be foolish not to mention 90’s moomin anime but Tove Jansson’s actual sketches and book illustrations are what’s important to me stylistically. I love 90’s moomin but it’s way more of a shit slurry than most people would like to admit LOL. Tove Jansson though that’s a woman that knew what she was doing and it was all wonderful. I think shes my biggest art inspiration hands down every single time I’ve had to draw a celebrity/artist portrait for classes ive drawn her. I recently got her book of letters and I can’t wait to read it…. There’s this tumblr called @/marsmombestmom who has a Wordpress blog which carries a lot of Tove’s concept art. I’ve poured over this thing for hours it’s very much worth exploring

okay about the art school au
tell me if you have any bright sparkling ideas for this au bc god knows i would eat them up. like i said before i know johanna is a graphic designer now but she has roots in illustration theyre like siblings. she leans towards children's books, making up stories and weird wonderful characters out of thin air. her work is also very botanical - her doodles in the show are full of winding plants and flowers. she could fill a page with dense undergrowth.
gerda is a student too but she's like that one teacher that just LOVES fonts. she is graphic design, product design, interior design, going back and forth between the computer room and the workshop to lasercut something or to build a weird chair. she could probably run a company marketing department at 18.
i also said kaisa is an analogue photography girl. she doesn't really care for most commercial photography she's like a man ray superfan and probably gets snotty about using digital cameras sometimes but loves to mess around with unconventional and cameraless methods. she might smell like chemicals. she doesn't want anyone close enough to be able to tell. she has always been an academic nerd and it shines in her artist research, drawing from the most conceptual artworks and fascinating herself with what there is to discover about them. she would love mike nelson.
edmund is perpetually covered in ink, of all colours, on his hands and his face. he's constantly workshopping prints of all kinds, one of his final pieces being a gigantic woodcut relief print depicting mythical creatures with lots of iconographic detail (think luke pearson's norse-inspired patterns o_<). he takes print room safety VERY seriously. do not put your hands or hair anywhere near the roller on the press. he will get you.
ive got like an outline idea for 6-8 chapters depending on whether i do it as a comic or writing? comics take so much effort for comparatively less story coverage so it would be a big endeavor but i would really love to have it all in visuals (also i'm not a superstar writer?) it's so difficult because some things i want to describe like in written word but some things i want to have visual 😭 artwork between paragraphs could be good but idk how cohesive it would be and it might be a bit jarring to suddenly be reading what you were looking at and vice versa.. that kind of thing works really well for a memoir like alison bechdel's fun home but not so much straightforward fictional story idkkkk... i can like see some panels in my head but i also want to do long descriptions and idrk if i want to mash them together. if i really do this it's going to take some PLANNING
victoria is still crazy but in a much more creative way. she loves to discuss everyone's work with them, she loves weird and experimental stuff. she likes to make elaborate and unconventional sets, props, and costumes for her colourful multi-media short films. she loves any art that moves, and makes great use of audio, sampling heavy thunderstorms pretty often.
AND! if i included the creatures (as people) then tontu would be a fashion & textiles tutor. i shan't be taking questions.
Tumblr media
also thank you for the inspiring tags @the-hilda-librarians-wife 😭 your hospital au was so awesome i might find myself doing footnotes like you did, describing techniques and stuff where it would be out of place to just straight up write it down in the story.. bc i am gonna get SCIENTIFIC with the photography
(if it was a comic i'm thinking about the fun I'd have with speech bubbles especially in a classroom/studio - one of my hugest ever inspirations is anatola howard and this comic is so spectacular for speech bubbles lol)

21, 26, 30 for the artist ask game?
Art styles nothing like your own but you like anyways
Gosh, that's a hard one. Probably Wayne McLoughlin, Jhonen Vasquez, Louis Wain, Anatola Howard, Alison Bechdel
What's a piece that got a wildly different interpretation from what you intended
I don't think there's any really? I don't know how many people make interpretations of my pieces and if they're wildly different from what I intended
What piece of yours do you think is underrated
Anthro RussetFur, Madre Antre, and this Angel RedTail

Ur art is so good + ur me giving a free list of awesome artists to follow :]
THANK YOU sweet thing...heart❤️ yessssssss there are so many fantastic artists on this doggone app I'm so glad I can share them with you guys :D ! Here are some more that I like:
Funnylesblie focuses on Homestuck and Problem Sleuth art...he has this really awesome distinctive art style with these crazy super expressive poses. I'm smitten with the big alien heads and the little eyes...great stuff
Marcheriest does these gorgeous big explosions of color and lines and shapes. There's a lot going on, but once you focus on something your eye can be lead around and you carve out the picture. Love love love the color pallettes...
Lukas-anderson's artwork is so neat &clean....it has an -I guess- logical approach to perspective and is just plain pleasing to look at. Also does animation...love the wobbly lines
Beverage2000 also does Homestuck fanart but a lot of other stuff too. Messy and scratchy art style with quivering lines and awkward perspectivework that I LOVE. Awesome 2D-ness... Epic.
Maroonracoon/Anatola Howard is a huuuuge longterm inspiration of mine. Absolutely stunning work I love all of it. Super meticulous and detailed but at the same time very clear and somehow deceptively simple...very compelling faces.
Thank you again for the ask...have a nice day uglygirlheaven

your style is so cool, where do you get inspiration from?
i get tons of inspiration from vintage illustrations and illustrators! the people i can think of offhand is the women who had a hand in creating the single-panel cartoon series flapper fanny (gladys parker, ethel hays, sylvia sneidman) as well as gerda gottlieb who was a painter! i’m inspired by other artists here on tumblr, too! like slitherbop, plastiboo, sillgoplove11, etc! OH AND ANATOLA HOWARD! also i’m pretty sure this counts but i really like drag 😭 i’m inspired by jinkx monsoon a lot… i’m also inspired by singers like meow meow revolution and her cabaret stage performances… (my faves shes done are surabaya johnny, ne me quitte pas, and her album/show songs from a little mermaid)OH CABARET THE MUSICAL TOO by kander and ebb.
idk if i’ve just started listing off things i like but i’m inspired by all these things!
