Throwback Thursday: Who named ammonites?
When it comes to ammonites, most folks think of the Jurassic Coast and Mary Anning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But did you know that she was not the first to find or even name them? The first mention of ammonites was actually around 77 AD in the Naturalis Historia, the world's first encyclopedia, written by ancient Roman naturalist, Pliny the Elder.
Tumblr media
He spent about a decade or more writing the 37 book series. It covered everything from botany,
Tumblr media
zoology,
Tumblr media
astronomy,
Tumblr media
geology,
Tumblr media
and mineralogy.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, he didn't get to finish (even after 37 books) due to his untimely death due to a certain volcano that blew in 79 AD.
Tumblr media
However, he did get to name ammonites, which means "horns of Ammon" after the Egyptian God Amun, who was often depicted with rams horns.

Amun, the Primordial God of the Invisible, is the former leader of the Ogdoad, a group of eight chaos deities which fought against Ra during the Time of Creation. Generous and Righteous, Amun decided to ally himself with the Sun God becoming one of his strongest allies against the forces of darkness. Associated with victory and kingship, he is the fierce protector of the weak and poor. With his divine spouse Mut and their son Khonsu, they form the Theban Triad, one of the strongest and most beloved ones of Kemet.

I finally got some proper statues for my altar! I started with Djehuty and Amun since they're who I'm feeling closest to currently but I hope to add some more over the summer. I'm so glad I was able to find a relatively inexpensive Amun one too since he's a bit harder to find.

Okay, a few questions:
(I know you dont have the answers for most of these but I really enjoy your headcanons)
1 Amun is said to have some talent at finding gifted vampires (while they are human even) how do you think he does that?
2 Do you really think vampires have regular human hair? All vampires would be bald. I mean even just the windshear from running at stupid speeds would eventually make their hair so brittle it would just fall out, and they would just, pull it all out when they are newborn right? Also the nails are vamp grade so why not the hair (I headcanon that alice and rosalie had just spendt a few hours with wirecutters dipped in venom trying to give emmet a more modern haircut at some point, and then he imidietly went out and ‘played with fireworks’ and thats how he burned his hair off in cannon, the ‘wound’ was still fresh and the strands had venom exposed to the air)
3 Are you still doing the monthly writing challenges?
4 Where do you think the ‘soul particle’ is in a vampire? Like you could probably burn the limbs and maybe even the chest whitout killing them but the head needs to be attaced to something for the vampire to be concious? So is it the head? Like in the southern wars would they burn the heads in battle and worry about the bodies after or would they still have to worry about headless bodies rejoining the fight?
X anon
Oh wow, I'm flattered, glad you enjoy the blog.
Amun
Well, like you said, we don't know. We only know what he says in Breaking Dawn and what's mentioned in the guide. However, what we do know to me doesn't indicate a talent so much as Amun is very old and knows what to look for and is also actively looking.
We don't know how he found Demetri but we do know how he found Benjamin. Benjamin was noticeably talented with fire and Amun heard about him, witnessed this, then turned him. Amun in other words, despite being a hermit in the desert, does have his ear to the ground and actively searches out talent much the way that Aro does, by taking a chance on people who look exceptional.
Add to this that Amun has been around Egypt for a very long time and that population and trade in that area has always been extremely large relatively for world population. What I'm getting at is that without having to move around it's not unlikely people with gifts would be in the area with enough time.
It's also telling to me that in thousands of years, thousands past when the Volturi decided gift strike forces were a great idea and everyone had to participate in an arms race, Amun has only found two and he has Benjamin in a death grip.
He immediately went full hermit after Benjamin and is terrified Aro will show up and take him away from him. That speaks to me of how rare it is.
TL;DR Amun's been looking in a highly populated area that has a rich history stretching back thousands of years, he knows what to look for and is willing to take a chance and turn people himself, and he's only ever found two and is horrified he'll lose Benjamin.
Is the Hair Human?
No.
Previous thoughts on vampire hair have been had but I do think it grows (otherwise everyone would be bald), so perhaps grows slowly pace we take into account Bree's adventures and the newborn with a bald spot, and it has to be stronger than our hair or else again everyone would be bald. What it appears to do is only ever stay at the exact same length for reasons.
We also know that it generally looks 'better' than most human hair without the vampire putting in any effort. Victoria's hair per Bella looks great when she's running about the wilderness with no shampoo, conditioner, and probably know hair brushing either.
Bella's hair after a month of starvation is suddenly not only incredibly long but also unbelievably good looking. It should look awful after that experience and should be thinner.
This gets me a lot of flack in this fandom but I subscribe to the magical girl hair theory for vampires.
Are We Still Doing Challenges?
Er, yes, @therealvinelle and I just forgot because the post-holiday daze. We'll post shortly.
What the Fuck is Up with Zombie Vampires
Every time I talk about Biology I say something stupid. I could assume a brain is required for most congition, and that the limbs simply have some nervous response or remote signalling that gets them back to the head, but I honestly don't know.
I'm going to have to cop out.

Yandere Egyptian coven headcanons - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Since they mostly go out at night, you most likely had caught one of them feeding or caught there eye while taking a nighttime walk
In my opinion i think this could go 2 ways, depending on who saw you first.
If it were Amun and Kebi I think it would be more of a platonic yandere thing maybe where you reminded them of a child. in this scenario, you could be either a human or a young vampire (turned around teenage years).
Benjamin and Tia would pretty much be like siblings, Tia being the quiet sister who would help you with homework or chores and Benjamin would be the brother who always helped bail you out of trouble.
If Benjamin and Tia found you congrats, you have two lovesick vampire puppy's.
They would probably take you in that moment not caring on the earful Amun would give them when they returned home.
If human, they would explain everything and inevitably turn you.
If a vampire, they would mostly stick to introductions.
No matter what the situation, you'll end up with the whole coven yandere for you in some way.

(Sorry if it sucks I've never written any yandere things before)

The Obscure Labyrinth
Oomi stood beside the airport with mildly readable anxiety on his face. Lucian called him the day before, finding a reliable clue which surely brought them all closer to the Box of Pandora. The idea tightened his throat and jerked his face into a reluctant grimace.
Bringing Nivian with himself was equally reassuring and towards the demon, cruel. He assisted him and the other lords closer to death which was of course, very much against his liking.
Oomi wore all dark clothes and had his katana across his back, hands covered in thin, leather gloves.
They were about to flew all the way to Greece, to find a labyrinth, seen by no one since 2000 years. Looking back over his shoulder he was looking for his partner with a sigh, through his nose.- I am coming only to see if they really find something. Otherwise, I am no longer interested in the box. The desperate I was to find it, the reluctant I am now.- he spoke silently.
"Me too."- Violence added inside his head, which made the angel to huff with a small smile he conveyed the popular option of his demon to Nivian.- Violence says, he feels the same. But his standpoint never changed.
Tumblr media
Looking ahead, he saw Amun and Reyes approaching them, their tall, strong form unfolding from the night fog.- I hope you'll be good...- Oomi muttered to Asylum, who stood well behind them, eyeing the lights of the airport buildings.
- Thanks for the trust, brother.- Asylum replied, turning towards the arriving lords, with a fleeting, disgusted grimace appearing on his flawless face. This time, instead of his fancy clothes he was wearing simple, tight black trousers, and a hoodie, hiding his silver hair. Under that, of course, he wore various stabbing weapons what he wielded with shocking agility, even if it was needless to fight in the last few decades.

Kudos for your amazing meta-posts and stories! I was wondering about Benjamin, since he comes up a few times in your fics. I looked him up on a fandom page, where it says “Edward mentions that B has a good attitude as well as a clear sense of right and wrong, and likes him for it.” I did like B when I read the books (years ago), but now that I’ve read your interpretation of Edward's own sense of morality that sentence sounds a bit... suspicious. Do you have any thoughts on Benjamin?
Thank you!
As for Benjamin, I do and I don't.
What we know about Benjamin
Benjamin was a street urchin in Kairo who was talent scouted by Amun, who recognised Benjamin's street performance as something more than mere human artistry. He took Benjamin away, turned him, and Benjamin turned out to be a powerhouse.
Having never gotten over the loss of Demetri, however, Amun made himself Benjamin's jailor, telling him that he needed to stay with Amun and hide if he wanted to be safe from the Volturi, keeping him locked up in a temple he wasn't allowed to set foot outside. A fiercely possessive man, Amun did not agree to let Benjamin see his old friend Tia, and Benjamin had to leave to seek her out and turn her himself in his only act of rebellion.
He and Tia have been living with Amun and Kebi ever since, with Kebi envious of Benjamin's importance to Amun and Tia never growing to trust Amun and Kebi the way Benjamin so easily did.
When Breaking Dawn rolls around and Benjamin sees a chance to stand up to the shadow forces that have forced him and his loved ones to remain in hiding for so very long and perhaps win his freedom along the way, it's an obvious choice for him to fight.
Worth noting that Benjamin is fifteen years old, and Tia is seventeen.
My thoughts on Benjamin
Benjamin has allowed himself to be defined by the narrative Amun told to him, and I don't think it's coincidence Amun turned him at such an impressionable age. Benjamin allowed himself to be kept locked up for five years straight and remained in hiding for centuries, with no hint of rebellion on the horizon: this is a boy who doesn't at all question the truth that Amun protects him from the Volturi.
Interestingly, it's not that he's not capable of standing up to Amun, in fact he does so whenever he has reason to. He missed his friend, Amun didn't want him to risk the excursion, Benjamin gave him the finger and turned her. He wanted to fight the Volturi, Amun didn't: sorry, Amun, but we're fighting the Volturi.
The only reason he does as Amun says with regards to hiding in Egypt, the only means Amun has of controlling him, is the boogeyman Aro, and Amun knows this. Benjamin, who doesn't understand why Amun wouldn't want to fight the Volturi and assumes cowardice is the only reason... doesn't.
Even Tia, who has two years on him and, being a girl, statistically would have a more developed brain than him, is only seventeen years old and while she's more critical of Amun she's not going to question the necessity of hiding from the Volturi either. As the Guide phrases it, being able to protect him from the Volturi was part of her motivation for giving up her humanity.
All of this to say that Benjamin is fifteen years old, he acts exactly that age and I unfortunately don't see a happy ending in store for him. He will either keep believing in the worldview Amun told to him and live in captivity until some new opportunity or another to overthrow the Volturi comes along, or something will happen to dispel him of his beliefs in which case I can only imagine he'll do something extremely rash.

The god Amun protects Tutankhamun – 1336 – 1327 BC – diorite.
Statue discovered by Auguste Mariette in Karnak in 1857
Collection of Prince Napoleon then Maison Feuardent
Acquired by the Louvre Museum in February 1920 – E 11609
Dated 1336 – 1327 BC, 2.15 m high, this statue is carved in the round from a block of very dark diorite. The “polish”, as impeccable as it is admirable, given to it by the sculptor seems to have attenuated its dark side, even giving it a shiny appearance. Georges Bénédite, who devoted a long study to this statue, brings this clarification: “We see at the top of the supporting pillar like a trail of pink granite, the witness of the vast syenite bank where the black rock flow was imprisoned”.
The statuary group represents the god Amun, seated on a cubic throne, with his hands resting as a sign of protection on the shoulders of Tutankhamun, who is standing in front of him and who is represented on The “symbolism” of the statue lies in the attitude that the god manifests to the sovereign: he, in fact, gives him “the investiture, because, the divine gesture is both of protection and presentation”. As Jacques Vandier translates it so well: “Amon stretches out his arms and puts his hands on the king’s arms. The divine hands were intentionally broken by sectarians who wanted, thereby, to prevent the divine fluid from permeating the former partisan of Aten. They also are who, without doubt, beheaded Tutankhamun “.
He is dressed in a tunic – or corselet – whose straps and braid are decorated with delicately chiselled friezes. The pleated loincloth leaves the navel visible. It is held at the waist by a nicely crafted belt which has an oval pattern in its centre under which is reproduced an Isis knot.
His body is of ideal proportions, with square shoulders and: “powerful legs, which help to accentuate the impression of strength and stability”.
