like gah, this series looks like it's gonna work alot with themes of "the desensitization of violence" and I have many many thoughts on it both from like the violence itself to confronting it, being a part of it, and so on

I'm really glad that Suletta and Miorine got their unambiguously happy ending. I get its significance as it portrayed a queer female couple with one of them a PWD WOC, both living a full, happy life especially after all that they've been through. I can see it has touched many people and that's good. And considering this was done in a big IP such as the Gundam franchise, it is a win.

That said, it really is appalling for me how war crimes and human experimentation go unpunished (with the exception of Shaddiq and Nika) in this series. Yes, Delling (and Sarius) are facing trials for Quinharbor and the Space Assembly League wipeout and Miorine is talking to the family of the victims of Gundam. But. The old hags of Peil Technologies don't exactly pay for experimenting on humans and vaporizing them when they have outlived their usefulness. Delling instigated the massacre at Folkvangr and Kennanji played a part in wiping out Elnora's family, comrades, friends, and mentor but they don't get to reckon that. There is no reckoning, no proper apology, no comeuppance. And considering Japan's shoddy history with apologies for its own war crimes and their honestly infuriating insistence that reparations = apology, especially when it comes to the issue of "comfort women"--not to mention their shrines dedicated to war criminals and their own record of human experimentation--G Witch's take on accountability is both unsurprising and yet still so disappointing. And before anyone goes off that this is just anime, media informs and is informed by society. Just as we can argue the significance of the happy ending of Suletta and Miorine, so too G Witch's treatment of accountability for perpetrators of massacre and human experimentation.

Do you think that in the temeraire universe carabineers get associated with lesbians because of the aerial corps? Like the corps isn't a queer safe haven, it's still Napoleonic era British military, but compared to everyone else in the empire they are very liberal where things like sex and gender roles are concerned. Add to that why some women would want to leave the expected path of marry, become a housewife and have children to a career path where they aren't expected to marry and only expected to have at least one kid if they make it to Captain (and even then, it's just until they get the kid not the rest of their life. Not to mention that if temeraire gets his way not having a captain won't be such a big problem anymore)... Well

Random thoughts about Deep Night episode 4:

We could call this episode: "How to hurt your loved ones" or "How did I ended up in a love triangle" depends which story line you follow.

▪️ In one hand, Khem wants to truly date Wela out in the open but he struggles with the implication of his job as a host. He gets jealous easily and can't seem to make the difference between Wela's job persona and Wela's true personality. By interfering all the time he is hurting him. The forced kisses were so annoying. You could see how Wela was hurt by Khem's actions. A kiss is not the answer. He should listen more and stop thinking he knows what is best for those around him. He also makes the same mistake with his mother. I believe Khem will eventually learn to be more mature and to really be pillar of support for his loved ones. Right now, he is just facing the consequences of his impulsive nature. I really love what Pan told him: "Taking care is not just physical or safety. It's about here too [while showing the heart]".

▪️ I'm liking Pan more and more. At first, he only seems to be the goofy best friend who is just the typical support role but I find him to be more mature and caring. He is truly a good friend to Khem and he is also a straightforward guy, but not in a bad way. I would say he knows what he wants and he doesn't hesitate to say it. I liked how he admitted very quickly to Seiji that he likes him and wants to pursue him. The silence who followed this statement scared me a bit but in the end I liked how Seiji gave him the right to try it. I guess he also likes Pan's attention to him. However, Pan is not the only one interested in Seiji. In fact, Ken, the childhood friend of Seiji, also likes him. Pan and Seiji are starting to get in this competition to win the heart of Seiji.

▪️ I wish, I really wish they will not make Seiji choose one and let him be with both of them. We don't get a lot of polyamour relationship. The only one I could think of from Thai series are Neo/Shin/Miw from 3 will be free and Kit/Lop/Ruj from Unforgotten Night (it was almost a cameo in this series). This time it could work so well. The sayings is to choose is to foresake, so my advice for Seiji is to not choose and have both of them. Love is love. You don't have to end up in a monogamous relationship if it's not made for you.

▪️ Let's also be happy because we also got a glimpse of the GL couple! It was too short but we finally got some crumbs. They are just cute.

▪️ I'm still trying to understand who is targeting the Deep Night Club because it's the second episode in a row where they have to face problems from the authorities. I may have miss an important point 🤷.

Anyway, it's still very fun to watch this series. I can't wait for the next episode.

Captain William Laurence

So I convinced my friend to read 'His Majesties Dragon'. So of course I re-read it too. Fingers crossed I can get them to continue the series so I can draw many more of these awesome characters from the later books as well. ;)

Laurence is a fantastic co-main character and to watch him grow over the course of the series is delightful! I've drawn him in ~1805 British Navy uniform, but with the "ugly green" color of the Aviator uniforms and a sort of harness. Harnesses being very useful when trying to climb around on a dragon mid-flight. It would have a chest/shoulder component as well, but since this is the not-currently-flying-but-could-in-a-pinch variation we're going with this being the "standard" uniform when not immediately on call. (and we're going to see a lot of it because the majority of important characters in book 1 are British Aviators)

Please don't mention any post book 1 spoilers (if we get there in the re-read I will be able to draw all the wonderful characters from the later books!!)!! I want my friend to go into the series as blind as possible ;D. Like to charge, reblog to cast that we'll get to the end of the series and I can draw amazing characters from all the books!
