Recently I read a post about Krist and Singto reunion and how you can sum up all this new era of Thai BL through their series "SOTUS". This series had such a great impact that it explains why the genre is where it is now. I'm kinda new in Thai BL and I never bothered to watch it. There are so many options nowadays so I never took the time to see what was about "SOTUS". However, that post made such an impact on me, that I decided to start it now. It may be late, but I want to see what is this story and why it is considered such a "classic".
Random Thoughts about SOTUS episode 1:
▪️ I'm always amazed by all this big gathering of freshman in Thai series or any other series to be honest. My country don't do this thing. During all my college life, I barely knew people I was in class with. I feel this big gathering must be great to feel like you're part of the school. Anyway, it had a very solemn vibe in the series, especially when the third years students arrive.
▪️ From the first minutes, you get who are the main characters. Arthit Rojnapat who is played by Krist appears to be the very domineering senior who seems to get off when he can intimidate his juniors. It's my only guess because his requests were really too much. Who can get 1000 signatures in only one week or know in this short time how many people are in their year?! I tried imagining being in the same situation and my anxiety would never let me get away with it. The other main is Kongpob Suthiluck, usually called Kong, was the junior who won't cow down to him and who will even challenge him. Saying they didn't get off a good start would be an euphemism.
▪️ It was so weird to see Krist being this annoying senior. Last role, I saw him was as Kawi in "Be My Favorite" and Hunter in "The Jungle". They weren't good guys too, but they more lovable. I had trouble accepting the change, at first. I'm sure we'll see some change after some episodes. However, I have to admit, I enjoyed very much the verbal jousting between his character and Kong. Every time, they were in the same room, it was like something was cackling in the air. The energy was off the chart.
▪️ Kong gave a total different impression. He is nice (he gave his shirt to another classmate when he couldn't get his size), brave (he didn't hesitate to shout in front of a large crowd that he likes men and asked ten of his schoolmates if they wanted to date him, even if it was a dare) and a good friend to have around (He helped M to get all the signature because M is too shy). He never really bends to anyone. He has done all the tasks Arthit threw at him, but it always felt like Kong was the one who had the upper hand, which was something Arthit found hard to swallow. I believe he never met his match before. He can be fierce, so it seems no other students before Kong found the courage to answer him back. Kong stands out from other. At the moment, this is only annoying for Arthit, but I guess it may lead to something else later.
▪️ We also get a few introduction to other characters but as for now they remains more like backgrounds characters. I think we'll learn more about them later in the series. It's so weird to see all these actors I saw in other series because they look so young here. You can see that 8 years has passed. Everyone has changed so much.
Anyway, I didn't think I would enjoy this first episode as much as I did. I thought it would show its age, but I didn't really feel it. It was a nice start and I really want to see the next episode.
I would say it's because of the teaser of the new episode. They make it look like he would become another suitor for Kang.
Maybe their interactions will create a misunderstanding commonly used in rom-com but in reality Shone isn't interested in Kang at all.
I believe Shone is just this nice big brotherly figure in Moo's life and will only help Kang and Moo to end up together.
Bro what do you mean Shone is competition????
I've seen discourse online saying that they want shone to stay away from Kang and Mok because he'll come between them... what? I don't think he's giving that vibe. Kang meating Shone by accident means Shone get's to see the kind of people his little brother is getting involved with without a bias. They are helping eachother, they are building community. Shone can be a confident for both kids, a role model for Kang and maybe even someone to lean on, something Kang hasn't had since his dad died. Also, do you really think Mok will not make a space inside his family for Kang??? Shone is the first step.
It's how Kang is having fantasies about kissing Moo while doing his laundry and how Potae says that Payos is the only one he has but it's Moo who's flirting and Payos pining and I love that for both of them because they deserve it but I also love their friendship even more because you gotta have friendship without romantic love in your life, you really do.
Well, Kang may look indifferent from outside but he just need to listen to Moo serenading him to start fantasizing about kissing his crush. Maybe it would be the right time to accept this love 😉
This series is a never ending fun at every minutes (love them! The sweet revenge and them leaving together hand in hand). Potae you really need to change. Payos will need a better boyfriend and it's time to learn from your mistakes.
I would like to know how Kang can be as strong as he his, because if someone like Moo was flirting with me all the time like that while being such a cutie, I would definitely fall in love too. He can pretend as much as he want, but Kang is loving all the attention. This smile can't lie.
I never thought I'd see Bom and Tar together again but here I am, eagerly awaiting what's basically a BL-themed ad.
You Make My Day will be released starting 5 May on youtube. Maybe by then I've found out what they're actually advertising for. Ice cream? Cute cutter knives on a string?
