Captain William Laurence

So I convinced my friend to read 'His Majesties Dragon'. So of course I re-read it too. Fingers crossed I can get them to continue the series so I can draw many more of these awesome characters from the later books as well. ;)

Laurence is a fantastic co-main character and to watch him grow over the course of the series is delightful! I've drawn him in ~1805 British Navy uniform, but with the "ugly green" color of the Aviator uniforms and a sort of harness. Harnesses being very useful when trying to climb around on a dragon mid-flight. It would have a chest/shoulder component as well, but since this is the not-currently-flying-but-could-in-a-pinch variation we're going with this being the "standard" uniform when not immediately on call. (and we're going to see a lot of it because the majority of important characters in book 1 are British Aviators)

Please don't mention any post book 1 spoilers (if we get there in the re-read I will be able to draw all the wonderful characters from the later books!!)!! Captain Catherine Harcourt of the British Aerial Corps

I'm fairly sure Harcourt is the youngest Captain and Formation Leader in book 1. She is Captain to the Longing Lily who is Temeraire's formation leader and is in the Emergency Training/new Captains trainee group with Temeraire and Laurence.

In the wold of His Majesties' Dragon Longwings - some of the most deadly/instrumental special-ability British Dragons- will only take female Captains, as such the British Aerial Corps have made secret exceptions to Regency/Napoleonic Britain's social norms. So.... yeah I drew a lot of characters from book 1 in very similar uniforms... no time to get better at drawing legs and shoes than the present I suppose. ;)

Lt. John Grandby of the British Aerial Corps

Grandby, oh Grandby.... I won't say too much because I know too much, but in book 1 his journey/relationship with Laurence arc is very adorable and I enjoy the gentlemanly mannerisms the crew take on under Laurence's influence.

Cadet Emily Roland

Emily Roland is the daughter of Captain Roland and is set to become Captain of her mother's dragon 'Excidium' (Longwing) after her mother's death (Dragon's live a lot longer than humans so Captains "breed themselves" as much as they breed dragons, as dragons are more willing to work with a Captain who grieves the loss of their previous Captain/has had a similarly deep connection to their Captain). Emily is mistaken for a boy by Laurence at first, but only briefly. Technically she's supposed to have a bowl cut at this age, but the paintings of Naval Cadets/Midshipmen around this age had slightly longer hair so this is where we ended up.

Lily

Dragon of the British Aerial Corps. Formation Leader.

Lily is a Longwing, her Captain is Captain Harcourt. Lily is a very sweet dragon not too much older than Temeraire, but as the most deadly in her formation (book 1, no spoilers) - the two bone spurs on her jaw are capable of spitting acid with great accuracy - she is the Formation Leader. Lily, Maximus and Temeraire become fast friends and they are very cute enormous trouble makers.

Lily is supposed to be blue and yellow with wings that turn orange-is at the ends, but I have a hard time picturing her that way, for some reason I unintentionally head cannoned her in beiges with blue and orange on her wingtips? I'm not really sure why but Eragorn-aversion might have something to do with it. (also I'm not the best at drawing dragons anyway, if you want to see some really cool dragon designs look up the art of Alexander Ostrowski, I wouldn't have gotten anywhere close to these designs without Ostrowski for inspiration. I tried my best, but that's what practice is for I guess.)

Captain Jane Roland

Cpt. Roland is the Captain of the Longing Excidium. A well established Captain, mother to Emily Roland, and wonderfully blunt. (I would say more but spoilers and I want you to read the series)

Prince Yongxing

Téméraire Series Book 2: Throne of Jade (by Naomi Novik)! My friend and I finished up book 2 (don't look at us like that... library holds and long tbrs were factors) I won't do the whole cast, just a few standout characters that I wanted to challenge myself with.

First up: Prince Yongxing, brother to the Emperor of China (He is based on/named after a real person btw). He arrives in England and sets off the plot of book 2. For his outfit: only Emperors could wear yellow, but apparently Princes could wear orange-y/darker almost yellows in the Qing dynasty. I based his outfit on portraits of Emperors and Young Princes (future Emperors), but as you might have clocked the bright white dragons are a very unusual (read: Unlucky) and are based on a book-specific plot/character detail that he is referenced wearing at New Years. He's also wearing a winter variation of his hat instead of the Summer version bc hats are hard and I had a lot more confidence in drawing this one. He is also described in the book to be wearing the iconic nail guards, and my research confirmed that both genders wore them, I was just much more used to Court Ladies wearing them in photos and cdramas lol. It was a really challenging redesign, but I did my best... oh and I attempted a look of lip-bitting contempt for an expression, but I don't know if I got it quite right.
