Atalanta #4 (Atalanta Outwrestles Peleus)

At the funeral games for King Pelius, Atalanta wrestles the Argonaut, Peleus, winning the match through strength and technique.

Looking to Homer and the Iliad and the funeral games for Patroclus, we can get a overview of the ancient greek funeral games. The body of the fallen was placed upon a funeral pyre, offerings or sacrifices are made, and the pyre burnes. In the funeral games was an opportunity for Greek men to compete and show their Arete, or excellence, in a given skill. Events like; Chariot races, boxing, wrestling, running, sword fighting, shotputting, archery, and javelin throwing. The winners of the contests could hope to be awarded the glorious olive wreath crown; or other precious objects like tripods or horses. In fact these funerary competitive games are seen as the ancient roots of the Olympic games. Although it was Hercules who created the first Olympic games to honor his father, Zeus.

Let’s take a look at Atalanta’s wrestling partner; Peleus, who plays an important role in Greek myth. As one of the heroes of the Argonautica, he later becomes a king of Phthia (in Thessaly) and is most famous for his marriage to the sea nymph Thetis. Zeus learned the prophecy that through his coupling with Thetis, her offspring would overthrow the Olympians, so he gave Thetis to a mortal; King Peleus. Chiron the centaur gave King Peleus the tip that he should ambush and hold tight to Thetis, as she transformed between forms. After succeeding to capture her, she agrees to marry, and the gods attend the wedding ceremony. This is the banquet where Eris, goddess of discord, sneaks in the golden apple inscribed with “for the farest,” setting off an argument between Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite. When Paris, prince of troy is Aphrodite promising Helen to Paris, setting off the Trojan war.

today i’m thinking about the argonauts & the ones they left behind.

My villain origin story is that Hylas and Atalanta are the most underrated argonauts so much that I didn’t know about them until very recently despite being into Greek mythology since I was five years old. Every book went “and all known heroes joined like Heracles and Orpheus and the twins winged sons of Boreas” FUCK the flying kids why did no one tell me about pretty boy Hylas who had the no. 1 Greek hero Heracles crazy over him or absolute badass queen Atalanta who hunted alone and took shit from no one?

Atalanta didn't deserved the punishment she got, all because Hippomenes negleted Aphrodite, the goddess that helped him in the race for Atalanta to marry him

Neither of them deserved that shit.

I like to think that Atalanta, Hippomenes and Meleager where a polycule while sailing with the Argonauts (I could’ve sworn I read somewhere that Hippomenes was part of the Argonauts but I can’t find the source rn Arrrggg), when they returned to Greece and Meleager was killed by his own mother it took such a toll on Atalanta bc she blamed herself for his death and separated from Hippomenes, hoping to protect him. So Hippomenes loses contact with Atalanta for several years only to find out that she has reunited with her shitty father (bc she wants to get her son by Meleager a comfortable life) who is trying to get her married. So Hippomenes goes to visit her, only to realize he’s not allowed and that the only way he’ll get to talk to her is if he joined the foot race, when he realized the predicament he was in he begged Aphrodite for help and she gave him the golden apples.

I like to think that while Atalanta is usually pretty chill she goes absolutely feral when it comes to food (like Sasha from AOT) bc she was raised by a bear. So anyway, Hippomenes wins and he finally gets to speak with Atalanta and reconcile. In my version they don’t get turned to lions and live happily ever after bc fuck that shit Atalanta deserves to be happy.

The argonauts are fightingggg and they haven't even set off yet!

So he attacked him angrily and the quarrel would have gone further had not the son of Aison himself restrained their dispute with words of rebuke. Moreover Orpheus took up his lyre in his left hand and began to sing.

Idas really said chat shit get hit. Atalanta is not present in this translation but I simply want her there.

I'm not normal about these two.

The idea that after everything their still friends. No matter how much has changed.

Just thinking about the Argo, Medea was just a kid at the time. We don't know the exact age but Atalanta was an established hero at that point so she had to be the older of the two. Knowing her she would have made the choice to look after the younger woman/girl.

Which would make not noticing just how bad Medeas situation was burn all the worse.

But we never see Medea angry at Atalanta. Hell we never see her angry at any of the other Argonauts outside of Jason.

Lily's happy to see them. Their relationship doesn't seem like it was bad.

I'm really passed we don't see more of them together. Eveytime they talk about each other it shows that they were close but Fgo doesn't have them together and I'm really passed about it.
