THE WAY I'VE BEEN SEEING U ON MY DASH AND NOW UR IN MY INBOX OH MY GOD THE INTERNAL ADFOISD;FASDOFHSDIIJ (panic? fangirling? smth?? idk???? but i love ur posts) if we have other common interests, no one will see me screeching about it but my laptop and my very old well-loved pillow pet
but YES i've loved zutara since i was a kid <3 i loved their chemistry so much and i love both characters and i'm SO MAD that they didn't end up together. trophy wife katara is an INSULT to her character, i couldn't even watch the rest of lok after the first few episodes, i hated where canon went after atla's epilogue. i only vaguely know ab lok canon but i stay firmly in atla's timeline lol
I DO LOVE KANEJ THO- i haven't read the nikolai duology but i DID read six of crows and loved it. i read the books after i watched ab half the show, then finished the two book series before resuming s&b on netflix lol but i've loved kanej since kaz knew his ghost was in the room AND WHERE IS THAT SCENE IN THE BOOKS WHERE HE SAVES INEJ, IT BETTER BE IN SEASON 2
as for httyd 👀 i only recently got back into it bc i absolutely loved it as a kid, but i've only seen the first and second movies and some of the show on netflix? but i wanna watch the rest of the shows bc they're also part of canon and I FOUND OUT TOOTHLESS FINDS A MATE IN THE THIRD ONE AND I JUST 😭😭😭 MY BABY FINDS LOVE

Unified screams erupted upon Appa. “YOU’RE WHAT!”
“Aang what have you done! You literally let a murderer on Appa! She’s going to kill all of us! Katara was right, and I can’t believe I ignored her.”
“I KNEW IT! Quickly Aang, land Appa and let’s get her off!”
Unable to take it anymore, Toph lost her cool. “Can you knuckle heads shut up! I highly doubt that she will kill us, why the hell would she listen to you guys fighting all the time when she could end her misery by taking you out.”
Reality hitting Sokka and Katara, they finally piped down, allowing Toph to continue.
“Look, what you said is highly questionable. I’m not saying that I trust you, but you’re going to have to give us more information than that or else I’ll throw you off myself. Got it?”
You sighed. At least someone in the group had more sense. “Yeah, of course. What would you like to know?”
“Well for starters a name would be great. Oh and maybe, I don’t know, how and why you’re the Fire Lords Assassin?!”
You almost wanted to pull Katara’s braid for the irritating look of satisfaction on her face. “Right okay… well my name is y/n. uhhh and I was forced to become his assassin when he caught me after I broke into the palace three years ago.”
“That’s it?! Nuh uh lady. I know he’s the Fire Lord and had done some awful things but why would he do that to a child?! You’re either lying or somethings still missing.”
There was a lot to weigh up. To suddenly reveal everything about you would be too much and would get you thrown off Appa anyway. Yet to reveal nothing wouldn’t let you gain enough trust to even last a day. Leaving you to share the one thing you knew so little about yourself that you didn’t care if they knew and hopefully enough of a miserable, pitying tale that they’d let you off the hook for the time being.
“My parents aren’t in my life, they never were. I don’t know who they were or why they did it. All I had was my trainer, Zemin. In his time, he was the most notorious Assassin in the entire Fire Nation and when he retired, he never took on any students to carry on his legacy - if you could even call it that. Every other trainer was ecstatic because this meant that their students would earn the most bounties. Until there was me. I don’t know why he took me in… he just said that he found me as in infant and regretfully took me from an islands rocky shore maybe to sell me off somewhere. I suppose he realised he could make even more money from me if he trained me until I could pay off debt for him raising me. I did the one thing assassins could do, kill. All the money I ever earned from each bounty went straight to him. Luckily enough, I learned quickly, and I got to my final payment when I was 13, then he would have set me free.”
Horrified, Aang couldn’t believe what he was hearing. There was nothing like this in the Air Temples growing up. “Luckily enough?! How in any universe is that lucky!”
“Most assassins in the Fire Nation, and others, are stuck paying off their guardians or trainers well into their adulthood. Because of… certain tactics and advantages, I became quite popular if you could put it that way and most of the people, I had to take care of were…” Halting, you knew that if you verbally said some lives are worth more than others, Aang would probably go into cardiac arrest.
“Well, some had more people wanting them gone so the bounty was higher.”
“How does this have anything to do with you working for the fire lord! I don’t see why Zemin would let you go if you were doing so much for him.”
Your strength was fading. You hated yourself for how much you scretly enjoyed having people around that weren’t as idealistic as those in the Fire Nation.  “He didn’t. I got an anonymous mission to take out a high general in the palace. So high, that it was going to be enough for me to finish my debt.” After not being met with screams you felt reassured to continue…. they seem to be taking this well…
You took a deep breath. Here goes nothing. “On my way out, I got caught in the middle of an Agni Kai. The fire lord wasn’t too pleased I killed one of his generals or interfered with punishing his son. Yet somehow in his psychopathic mind he saw it as an opportunity to pledge my allegiance to him.”
The silence amongst the group was short lived.
“YOU MEAN ZUKO?”
“YOU KILLED SOMEONE.”
“AND YOU ACCEPTED?”
You scrunched your face. Maybe this was a bad idea to tell them. But it was too late to go back. “Yes, it was Prince Zuko in the Agni Kai, that’s how he got his scar. Yes, Aang I did kill the general, but to be fair I haven’t killed anyone since then… And Katara if you were being tortured every day for 8 months, I’m sure you would wear down too.”
The waterbender was unsatisfied with your answer. “Unbelievable! Of course, you did! Everyone has a choice in this world, and you chose the fire lord. You’re nothing but a coward.”
“My life was on the line! You don’t know anything about me.”
“Oh please, y/n. I do. I know everything! Sure, you were raised to assassinate others, but you can’t expect me to believe you didn’t know what you were doing when you were standing before Ozai. I would have stayed in a life of suffering than go with him.” Shaking her head, she pierces you with a disgusted look, “You’re no better than Ozai. No better than Azula.”
As Appa continued to glide through the ever-ending expanse of the sky, it seemed nothing could break the suffocating tension that encompassed everyone upon his saddle.
Toph was the only one to speak up. “Didn’t you hear her Katara? She hasn’t killed anyone since then! She’s surviving. If you ask me… she’s braver than any of us, you never know what could have happened to her if she got caught not actually killing her targets!”
Irritated Katara only grumbled, turning away while leaving the two boys to think about how they felt about you. Despite giving them answers, they still had so many questions.
It was undeniably clear that Katara has made her mind up about you, and you were sure everyone else was the same despite the earth benders attempts at comforting you. Hence, as you sat there across from the four of them, you were the first to break eye contact, turning your head to the side as you searched for something to focus on out there in the sky. Bird, a cloud, anything. You didn’t have the heart, the courage, to argue against what she said.
Unknown to you, Aang shuffled closer to you scared that his angry friend might hear him going towards you. His words only just loud enough to hear above the wind he whispered to you… “Its okay y/n. I don’t really understand what you’ve done or what you’ve been through but when youre ready.. you can tell us.
That was the first time your heart ignited a comforting warmth.
Tumblr media
As Appas soft paws skilfully landing on the hard earth, you felt your heart drop inside you. What do I do now? Mind racing through all the possibilities, Toph seemed to have decided what to do before you could even stand.
“Hey! Come with me.”
Jumping off Appas saddle you landed on your feet with such a skilled silence, Toph had to sense your heartbeat to even realise you were next to her. Setting off towards where she’d set up her sleeping area, it was best you stuck closely behind.
“Don’t think about what Katara said, she doesn’t get it.”
“How so?”
Stalling in her tracks, she turned her unseeing gaze towards you. “She doesn’t know what its like to be born into a life that you don’t want. And she definitely doesn’t know how hard it can be trying to escape it.”
Unsure with how to reply, humming in understanding was the best you could come up with.
“Just stick with me and you’ll be fine. I know you most certainly don’t need me, but I’ve got your back.”
Tumblr media
The next day had gone by agonizingly slow. With Toph trying to teach Aang earth bending you were left to your own devices since Katara decided to tag along. Although you found yourself tailing Sokka as he went his own way looking for food unaware of your silent giggles seeing him get stuck in the ground.
“...big things eat smaller things. Nothing personal. But this time, it didn’t work out that way…I admit it, you’re cute…”
You decide to finally reveal yourself, tired of your lack of entertainment. “What are you doing down there Sokka?”
Letting out a girl like squeal, he’s horrified at getting caught in this position. “Nothing!”
“You look like you could use some help.”
“I don’t want help from you!” You dismiss it. Surely he has no other choice but to make himself acquainted with you.
“Yeah, right. It’s funny, you’re probably the third person that has ever said that to me. The second in about the span of 48 hours.” you cant help but divert your attention towards the cute animal annoying him. “Aweee look at this cutie!”
“Get away from it!”
“Why should I do that?”
“Because I don’t want you to hurt it!”
“Please, I actually quite like animals. They’re a lot better than humans anyway.”
“I- well… fine! Just go away?”
You scoff, “Why’s that?”
“I don’t like you!”
“Hmm… is that so.”
“Yes, of course it is!”
You’re done feeling sorry for yourself. “Are you sure you don’t like me, or do you feel that way because of your sister?”
“I- well… argh! Fine! I don’t know.”
“Well… why don’t you talk to me and work it out for yourself? If you still dislike me so much I’ll leave you be and get someone to come help.”
A  silence fills the distance between the two of you.
He sighs, caving in, “So.. this Zemin guy. Did he REALLY not give you a choice?”
Looking up, you stare at the clear sky. “I learnt early on in my training that I didn’t have a choice or options in life other than what he wanted. Any exercise I rushed through, half assed, or tried to skip through when he wasn’t looking came with consequences.”
“What kind of consequences?”
“The kind that keeps all of my clothing and bindings on so I don’t constantly get pitiful looks or too many questions.”
He scoffs, “prove it”
Staring at all your layers you sigh, “don’t say I never warned you.”
Peeling off all your layers one by one until your down to just your tank top and pants, you decide to take off your face mask last. Your eyes meeting Sokka’s, you notice him swallow thickly. But its you to break the ice first. “In all fairness, most of them are now from Ozai. The older they look… well I’m sure you can work it out for yourself.”
“b-but-“Fuck why did I have to make him uncomfortable.
Unable to take it any longer, you pull him out from the hole in the ground. “Its fine.”
You turn to walk away after helping him, but he grabs your scarred wrist, the feeling of the textured skin making him internally wince. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have made you expose yourself like that. Its horrible that you had to experience that… hell we look the same age!”
“Everyone is on different paths. Look, lets just forget about it..”
Sokka feels like he could bust into tears “No! you don’t understand. I’ve seen the effects of the fire nation… hell they took away my mum. I still remember it, sometimes I have weeks where I keep reliving it in my nightmares, only finding peace when im awake. Its like im being haunted. But- but you?! You have to face it whether you’re awake or asleep”.
Squeezing your eyes shut, you can’t handle the intensity of his words. Theres nothing you can do. Nothing you can say. You hug him. You don’t remember the last time you held someone. It feels weird, almost wrong. But as he squeezes you back, tightening the embrace, you understand one thing. You have an understanding with the water tribe boy, despite how dark it may feel.
Tumblr media
Hours pass by as you sit with sokka talking about useless topics until the other three join you once more. Feeling weariness in their gaze, you realise you forgot to put your layers back on. Now everyone can see your face and scars.
Only Aang has the courage to speak with you.
“Hey. Uhhh, y/n?”
“Yeah?”
“I just… I’m sorry for not speaking much with you since yesterday. I didn’t mean to, it was just a lot to process personally! Growing up with the Air Nomads, I was taught that killing is wrong and that under no circumstance should that be the answer. If I’m completely honest with you, I still stand by those teachings and to have someone who has… killed… so close to me and the people I care the most about is… unsettling.”
There it was. You knew despite how much he was trying; you knew he wouldn’t be able to see past what you did. What you are.
“I understand. I don’t blame you, or anyone for reacting the way they are, and I know what it feels like to want to protect those who mean something to you.” You glance at Sokka, remembering how he understood.
“Just… please understand that I’ve realised what I did was wrong and while I can’t change everything that I have done, I’m trying to move away from that way of life. I don’t want to be a killer anymore. I’m trying my best to fix it.”
“I know…. Its just-“
“You don’t trust me.”
“What?! NO! I mean…. I don’t know. You clearly have good inside of you but it’s hard to look past.”
“I get it. I’ll head off then, the world needs you Aang and I won’t be the one to stand it your way.”
“No! stop! Please! I know I said it’s hard for me to do, but I clearly see you trying your best. I know you won’t hurt me. I just… I suppose I need to open my eyes more. See you for who you are now, what you’re doing now.”
But what if you can’t? What if I’m still that person, no matter how much I try to shove it away. This is what I have been made to become?
“Okay.”
Letting out a nervous quiet laugh, he glances back to everyone. “okay well… lets eat!”
Tumblr media
Zuko stares at the sky in the heavy downpour. “You always through everything you could at me. Well, I can take it. And now I can give it back!”
Lightning cacks in the sky before his eyes.
“Come on!”
“Strike me! You never held back before!”
Met with only the sound of the world around him, he feels helpless. Lost. Alone.
Screaming out, Zuko falls to his knees as the rain and guilt encompasses all of his senses.
His voice scratchy from screaming, he can hardly croak out… “You never held back from her."

The days after their arrival back to the island passed by with relative ease.
Y/N practiced waterbending with Katara and Aang so she could work on getting the hang of it again. She’d been close to mastery before Ba Sing Se, and her muscle memory was stronger than she realized, but prison and the months without her bending had weakened her. Zuko continued working with Aang on his firebending under the looming deadline of the comet.
Sokka and Suki trained with each other too, working on their hand to hand and sword fighting, and Y/N would occasionally join in to stay sharp on what Suki had taught her back in prison. Her time without her bending made her realize how much she relied solely on it, and she never wanted to feel defenseless again.
They continued to share stories every night over a campfire. They all had plenty to talk about after everything they’d been through, especially when Zuko had been against them for half the time, Suki was leading the Kyoshi Warriors, and Y/N was stuck behind bars.
And of course, Zuko and Y/N spent as much time together as they possibly could. They were practically attached at the hip—sitting together at meals, watching one another bend on their breaks, training against each other the way they used to, exploring the island together, just being with each other. After everything they’d been through, Y/N thought they deserved it.
Eventually though, it was decided that they had to leave. Being in Fire Nation territory, even in the middle of nowhere, was risky. They were running out of food and supplies in general, and the possibility that Fire Nation ships would still somehow discover them weighed on their minds. They couldn’t afford to get caught so far into their mission, especially with the traitor prince of the Fire Nation on their side.
Zuko’s idea, however, was possibly even riskier.
“Ember Island?” Y/N asked hesitantly. “That’s… bold.”
“We’re already being bold by staying in Fire Nation territory,” Zuko said. “We’re safe from Azula for now, but it’s only a matter of time before she somehow finds us again.” He shrugged. “My family’s vacation home is the last spot anyone will think to look.”
“I think it’s a great idea,” Sokka said. “It’ll be nice to not fight for our lives for a minute before we make the final push.”
Aang adjusted his hold on the reins—they’d already packed up Appa and started flying before Zuko proposed his idea—and shrugged. “I’m okay with it. Zuko and I will be able to keep training, and you all can relax in an actual house.”
“And we’ll be able to go to the beach!” Toph exclaimed. “I’ve been meaning to work on my sandbending. And,” she grinned, “I’m betting none of you have heard of sandball fights.”
“We’re really getting ourselves into something,” Katara said dryly.
Y/N smiled and she leaned into Zuko’s side. He wrapped his arm around her immediately and pulled her closer.
“I’ve always wondered what Ember Island was like,” Y/N mused. “I was always so jealous when you and Azula got to go there on vacation every summer and I was stuck at the palace.”
“You weren’t missing much,” Zuko said wryly. “Yeah, there’s beaches, but mostly it was just unbearably hot.” He frowned. “My father still made me do work even when we were supposed to be on vacation. I’ve done a lot of swordfighting here.”
“I missed you,” she said, and she knew that she would never get tired of seeing Zuko’s cheeks flush red.
“Really?” he asked. “Even then?”
“Especially then,” she clarified. “It wasn’t like I had much going on for me there. The palace was extremely boring without you.”
“Spirits, you guys are gross,” Sokka groaned as he looked out at the sky. “Suki and I haven’t been like this, have we?”
Katara chuckled. “You definitely have. You could barely stay off of each other when you got back from the Boiling Rock.”
“Just imagine what they were like when they first got back together,” Zuko said with a frown.
“Neither of you can say anything,” Toph asserted. “I can hear both of your heartbeats shoot up every time you’re around Y/N and Suki.”
Zuko scowled, Sokka’s face flushed, and Suki and Y/N just smiled at each other.
“So Ember Island is a yes?” Aang asked. When everyone nodded in agreement, he looked at Zuko. “I’m in need of your navigation skills, Sifu Hotman.”
He groaned. “I told you to stop calling me that.”
“I know,” Aang said cheerfully.
Zuko just sighed, and he kissed Y/N on the cheek before he moved to sit next to Aang. She smiled, and she let her hand hang over the side of the saddle.
“...I guess it is nice not seeing you two argue all the time,” Sokka said after a moment.
“It’s nice that you two aren’t moping around all the time either,” Toph added. “That was kind of annoying.”
“Imagine how I felt,” Y/N said, though it was absent minded as her gaze stayed on Zuko.
“I don’t have to imagine it,” Toph said. “You were very clearly mopey.”
“And when you weren’t mopey, you were angry,” Suki contributed. “You said you were imagining Zuko’s face whenever I taught you new moves at the Boiling Rock. You beat him up a lot there.”
Sokka and Toph laughed, but it was a moment before she said anything. It took Katara saying her name for her to turn back around, and when Y/N did, she blinked for a moment. “What?”
Katara chuckled, glancing at Zuko before she looked back at her. “We’re just glad you’re back.”
Her expression instantly brightened as she smiled. “I’m glad to be back.”
-
It didn’t take long for them to arrive at Ember Island—and if it did, Y/N was far too busy conversing with her friends and watching Zuko for it to matter. She grimaced as she slid off of Appa, one hand taking Zuko’s and the other wiping a bead of sweat from her forehead.
“Spirits,” she mumbled, “I thought I was used to Fire Nation heat by now.”
“Me too,” Sokka groaned. “But this is already worse than all the other places we’ve been to.”
“Ember Island’s always been like this,” Zuko said. “The good news is that it’s Ember Island. There’s plenty of beaches—we’ve even got our own private one.”
“Good for practicing waterbending,” Katara said with a glance at Aang.
“Good for practicing all kinds of bending,” Zuko said. “You’re gonna need to practice your firebending every day if you want to stand a chance against my father. We’re running out of time and you’re nowhere close to being a master.”
Aang frowned. “Way to bring down the mood, Zuko.”
“I’m being realistic!” he defended. “You can’t just end one hundred years of war with some good luck and an optimistic mindset!”
Sokka shrugged. “It’s worked for us so far.”
Zuko opened his mouth to say something that would definitely cause an argument. Before he could, Y/N laughed, looping her arm through his and tugging him along.
“Come on,” she said. “Show us around.”
Zuko sighed, though his show of annoyance was negated as he pulled Y/N closer. “Fine. It is about time I’ve brought you here.”
“Ugh.” Toph kicked at the sand with her foot. “I think Zuko’s just brought us along on his couples vacation.”
“Oh, quiet,” she joked. “We’ve earned it.”
Toph stuck her tongue out. “Doesn’t mean we can’t complain about it.”
Y/N chuckled as they walked together, the rest of the group trailing behind them.
“Spirits, Zuko,” Sokka marveled when they stepped inside the house. “This is huge.”
“It is the summer home of the royal family,” he said dryly. “My father never settles for anything less than perfection. It also gave us more room to avoid each other when he was causing arguments.”
“I can’t imagine that happened a lot,” Katara said sarcastically.
“Never,” Zuko agreed with the same tone. “He almost burned down the place a few times.”
Aang frowned. “Sounds like a great guy.”
“I know you’re not a violence guy, but if there’s anyone you’d enjoy fighting, it’s my dad,” Zuko muttered.
“I’ll do it for the good of the world,” Aang said. “Not because I’ll enjoy it.”
Zuko grimaced and opened his mouth to say something, but Y/N interrupted once more before they could devolve into this conversation again.
“Like Sokka said, this place is huge.” She placed a hand on Zuko’s arm. “Will we have our own rooms?”
Zuko’s brows creased a bit, but he nodded after a moment. “Yeah. There should be enough for all of us.”
“Suki and I can share,” Sokka said, stretching his arms out casually to reach one around Suki. She laughed and leaned her head against his chest, and he looked far too pleased with himself. “Tryna make up for lost time, y’know?”
“Gross,” Toph scoffed. “I’ll take my own room, please.”
Aang glanced at Katara for a moment before he cleared his throat and nodded at Zuko. “Yeah. Me too.”
Katara was too busy looking at a mask sitting on a mantle. She picked it up and glanced back at Zuko. “What is this from?”
“One of my mother’s favorite plays,” he said. “She was an actress before she married my father, and every time we came here, we’d always go see some shows. They gave her the mask of the lead character after the end of one production a few years ago, as thanks for her patronage.”
“Oh, we should definitely go see a play while we’re here!” Y/N exclaimed. “I got my hands on some old play scripts when I was still working in the palace, and the other servants and I would spend hours reenacting our favorite parts.” She chuckled. “It would be nice to see actual actors do it.”
“We should be able to carve out some time for that,” Zuko said. “Between all the training, of course.”
“You are such a downer,” Aang groaned.
“I’m seeing the full picture!” he defended. “We’ve still got a lot of work to do—just because we’re at our vacation home doesn’t mean we’re on vacation.”
“After all this is over, we definitely deserve a vacation,” Sokka muttered. “Before all the rebuilding and restructuring and relegislating starts…” The smile fell from his face. “Wow. We’re never gonna get a vacation.”
“Oh, perk up, ponytail,” Toph said. “We’re going to end the endless war and defeat the undefeatable Fire Lord. If we want to take a vacation, no one can really stop us.”
The smile reappeared with surprising quickness. “That’s true!”
Zuko laughed softly. “Your rooms should be on the first floor. You can explore and divide the rooms yourselves. I,” he looked at Y/N, “want to show you something.”
She smiled as Zuko pulled her closer with an arm around her shoulder and made for the stairs, leaving a rapidly growing argument over room selection in their wake.
“Do you think they’ll have decided by the time we get back down?” Zuko asked.
Y/N shrugged. “This is the first time they’re sleeping in rooms instead of camping on the ground in… Spirits. Since Ba Sing Se, I think. I wouldn’t be surprised if they go at it all night.”
He chuckled as they stopped in front of a room, and Zuko pushed open the door so they could walk in together.
“This was my room whenever we came here,” he said. “I figured we could share it.”
“This is the height of luxury,” Y/N commented, stepping out of Zuko’s embrace to run her hand over the sheets. Her lips quirked into a smile. “I can’t believe you slept on a bed like this every night.”
“You’re telling me they don’t have this kind of stuff in the North?” Zuko asked wryly.
“No,” she chuckled, “definitely not. We were more focused on not freezing.”
“Well, we’re more focused on pointless displays of luxury,” he said, “so you’re not too far off.”
Zuko ignited the tip of his finger and began lighting candles around the room, and Y/N glanced at him with amusement as she sat down on the bed.
“Mood lighting,” he explained with the sliver of a smile. “I think we deserve some time alone after the past few days.”
She pressed a hand to her chest. “You know the way straight to my heart.”
Once he was done he sat down next to her, and Y/N intertwined their hands together and pulled him down so they were laying on their backs. She rested her head on Zuko’s chest and he moved his arm around her to keep her close, tracing lazy circles on her shoulder.
“Wonderful mattress,” she sighed. “So this was what you were up to while I was sewing clothes and doing endless loads of laundry.”
“I thought about you a lot more than you probably think,” Zuko said. She turned her head a bit to look at him, slightly surprised, and he shrugged. “Honestly? When we were kids, I thought about you pretty much constantly. My father always told me not to talk to servants, but I didn’t see you as anything other than my friend. You were… kind of my only normal friend.”
“Well, you were kind of my only friend, period. All the other servants were way older—they just felt like a different version of my mom.” Y/N’s gaze rose to the ceiling. “I wonder how they’re all doing.”
“They should be okay,” Zuko said. “No one really caused as much trouble as we did.”
Y/N laughed as her gaze flitted around the room, taking in all the details. A portrait of the royal family hung on the wall, while a much smaller, lone portrait of Zuko sat on a desk in the corner. He didn’t look very happy, but she couldn’t imagine sitting for that many paintings as a child was fun. What looked to be a half-finished message sat on the desk, the ends of the scroll rolling up and obscuring most of the inked letters. A neat stack of towels and blankets were on top of a clothing chest in the other corner, and she chuckled a bit. In her experience of doing his laundry in their youth, it seemed to be something he still hadn’t grown out of.
“I can practically see little Zuko running in here after a day at the beach,” she mused. “The ends of his clothes singed from fighting with Azula, his hair drenched from swimming, getting sand all over the sheets.”
“I wasn’t that messy of a child,” he complained. “I… I did come home with my clothes singed a couple times, though.”
She chuckled. “I know. My mother had to fix a lot of your outfits because of it.”
“It’s not my fault that ‘hide and blast’ was her idea of fun!” he defended.
“Hide and blast?”
“One person hides, the other person searches. By… blasting fire everywhere.” Zuko shook his head. “I don’t know all kids around the Fire Nation were as crazy as us or if Azula invented it herself.”
“...Yeah,” Y/N said with a slight laugh. “We definitely didn’t play that in my village.”
“Of course you didn’t,” he said. “None of you were firebenders.”
“I was the only waterbender in the village though,” she said. “There were a couple other earthbender kids, but it made me feel so special. We would always play together and try to mix our bending together.” A small yet wistful smile tugged at her lips. “That feels like forever ago, though.”
“I know what you mean,” Zuko murmured. “I was banished three years ago, but a lifetime has changed since then.”
“For the better?” Y/N murmured.
She could feel Zuko nod. “Definitely.”
Their door was then pushed open more, and Suki poked her head in through the gap. A grin appeared on her face at their closeness.
“I see the lovebirds are making themselves at home,” she mused.
Y/N laughed as she sat up, pulling Zuko with her. She smiled at the sight of his flushed cheeks. “We’re trying.”
“We believe in knocking here in the Fire Nation,” Zuko grumbled.
“The door was open,” Suki said cheerfully. “And I’d like to steal your girl for an afternoon outing.”
Her eyebrows shot up. “What for?”
“Well, I’d like to explore the island some, and I figure we’re the lowest profile out of our whole group,” she said. “We’ve also missed out on some shopping while we were stuck in prison—we’ve gotta get our hands on some Fire Nation clothes.”
Y/N’s eyes lit up. “That’s a great idea! Leya’s dress is beautiful, but Earth Kingdom clothing sticks out a bit more than I want.”
“And I’m in literal prison clothes,” Suki said. “The sooner we’re in red, the better.”
“That’s… probably smart,” Zuko amended. “There’s some gold pieces in my bag. It should be more than enough for both of you.”
“Are you sure?” Y/N frowned. “You don’t have to—”
“You think I didn’t take a bunch of money from the palace before I left?” Zuko asked wryly. “Don’t worry about it.”
Suki’s smile grew. “Just call it reparations.”
Zuko huffed a laugh, but Y/N cut him off as she pulled him in for a kiss.
“You’ll be alright while we’re gone?”
“Of course,” he said. “This is my home, after all. If anything, I should be asking you that.”
“I’ve got the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors with me,” Y/N said. “If anyone decides to mess with us, it’s going to be their problem—not ours.”
Suki laughed and gestured with her head, and Y/N stood up and started walking backwards. “I’ll see you later—try to have some fun here.”
“I don’t have fun,” he called out as she was walking out, and she just shook her head with a smile.
“You’re really dating a ball of sunshine there, aren’t you?” Suki joked.
Y/N bit back her growing smile. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
-
The rest of the day went by in a breeze.
Y/N and Suki spent a few hours in town, chatting and shopping and even doing some reconnaissance at the end, just to make sure they were truly undercover at the vacation home. Doing rookie spy work with a Kyoshi Warrior was surprisingly just as fun as the shopping part—and after what she and Zuko did to free her village, it was surprisingly easy.
The sun was still high in the sky when they got back, dressed head to toe in Fire Nation finery. Zuko and Aang were in the midst of training when the two of them went around back to find their friends, and when he saw Y/N, his fire died out and his eyes nearly popped out of his head.
(“Yeah,” Zuko had stammered when she asked his opinion, “You look really good.”
“Thanks,” she said, and she felt the heat rush to her cheeks. “I feel pretty good.”
“Fire Nation clothes suit you,” he said, and he pulled her into a kiss. “It’s about time you’ve gotten some.”
“Technically, I wore them for a few months,” she said wryly. “Prison clothes and all.”
Zuko scoffed. “That doesn’t count.”
“And I wore them for most of my childhood,” she mused. “Servant clothes and all.”
“That counts even less!” he insisted.
“But thank you,” Y/N finally said with a smile. “I was hoping you would like them.”
It was an effort to bite back her joy every time Zuko would sneak a look at her while they continued their training.)
The rest of the day was just mostly spent getting used to everything. The last time the vacation home had been occupied was when Zuko, Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee visited, so a lot of adjustments needed to be made.
Katara insisted on washing all the sheets, and Y/N decided to join in because of her waterbending—Aang wanted to talk with Katara, Zuko wanted to be with Y/N, Toph wanted to ask him a bunch of questions about Ember Island, and Sokka didn’t want to be left out, so soon enough, the seven of them were all sitting on the steps of the house doing laundry and telling stories.
Soon enough, the sun had set and the house had been cleaned what felt like ten times over. Everyone had retired to their own devices except for Y/N and Zuko, who were walking along the shore arm in arm.
“I think I like beaches,” she mused. “The nearest ocean had no beach back home, and all we had in the North was ice. You Fire Nation folk are lucky.”
Zuko chuckled. “I don’t know if it’s luck. We’re just one big island with a lot of humidity.”
“Still,” she leaned her head on his shoulder, “it’s nice. We should visit here together once all this is over.”
“Of course,” he nodded. “I know I’m going to be the Fire Lord if all goes well, but there’s going to be a lot of diplomacy trips.” She felt his eyes on her. “You can join me on all of them.”
“Of course,” she repeated. “The Fire Lord’s Earth Kingdom-born, waterbending girlfriend will be so welcome.”
“If you’ve learned one thing through all of this, it should be that I don’t care what anyone thinks when it comes to you,” Zuko said. “I want you there with me. You want to be there with me. That’s reason enough.”
Y/N chuckled, and she ran her thumb over Zuko’s knuckles. His hands housed callouses, borne from hundreds of hours of explosive firebending and sword-fighting and years of life on the road. She always wondered how hands that treated her so softly, that revered her, were so capable of violence.
“I know there’s going to be a lot of expectations for us,” she said. “Especially once you take the throne. But I— I’d like to take things as slow as we can.”
“Of course.” Zuko squeezed her hand, his brows creasing. “I don’t care what anyone says or wants or expects. I love you, Y/N—we’ll go at our own pace.”
“It’s just because we’ve spent the past year trying to kill each other,” Y/N said with a nervous laugh. “If we could spend this next year being in love with each other, that would be really great.”
That actually got a laugh out of Zuko, and he gestured with his head towards the sand. When they sat down, he pulled her into his side. They fit perfectly together.
“Don’t worry,” he murmured. “I think we’ve already gotten a headstart on that.”
“Good,” she said.
Y/N sighed as she moved closer into Zuko’s embrace, his warmth a shield from the cool night breeze. She’d always run cold, and having a personal hearth made things much easier.
“I wish we didn’t have to go through so much to end up with each other,” she murmured.
“Believe me,” Zuko sighed, “I know.”
“But my mother always told me that everything happens for a reason,” Y/N said. “And… I guess she’s right. Because I don’t think we would be here if all this hadn’t happened.” Something inside of her twisted, and though she tried to suppress it, the words came out before she could really think about it. “And sometimes I— I wonder why I’m still here.”
He frowned slightly, allowing a short glance down at her. “What do you mean?”
“I mean… you know what I’ve had to go through to get here. My village, the palace, the North, this journey with Aang, the capital prison, the Boiling Rock…” she shook her head. “Countless others have died or gotten hurt trying to protect me or save me. Our group— we were the first ones ever to escape from the Boiling Rock. So why do I get to be here? Why is my father gone, but I’m still here? I don’t deserve it more than he did. I certainly don’t deserve it more than Yue. So… I don’t know. Sometimes I just can’t understand why I’m the one that got to make it when so many others haven’t.”
“Don’t say that,” Zuko urged.
“It’s not the way you think,” Y/N said honestly. “It just feels like we’ve beaten every single odd.”
“Maybe we have,” he said, “but it’s certainly not out of luck, or chance.” Zuko took her hand and intertwined their fingers together, giving her hand a squeeze. “You fought every step of the way to get here—a lot of the time, you were fighting against me. You’ve earned every good thing you’ve gotten, Y/N, and I think I might spend the rest of my life trying to be someone worthy of you.”
“Zuko,” she lamented, “you already are.”
“It’s not the way you think,” he echoed wryly. “I’ve loved you since the beginning, and despite everything, you still love me too. You kept giving me chances because you believed in me for some stupid reason. I wouldn’t be where I am without that—without you. I want to be the best version of myself every day so you know you made the right choice.”
Y/N felt the heat rush to her cheeks as she smiled, squeezing his hand back. Nowadays, they were almost always touching in some way. Tonight reminded her why—she never felt more comforted, more at peace, then when she was with Zuko.
“You… kind of just hit my next point,” she said with a nervous chuckle, curling into his side further.
“Don’t tell me it’s more self-doubt,” Zuko said.
“I can’t help it!” she defended. “I— I just have to make sure.”
“Of what?”
“That…” Y/N paused, her mouth suddenly dry. “That I’m still the one you want. Even after all that’s happened. After all that’s going to happen.”
Zuko frowned, and he took her other hand, lacing their fingers together.  “Of course. Y/N, it’s always been you. It’s been true forever, even if I haven’t always known it.”
“It’s not going to be easy,” she said softly. “I’m Water Tribe and Earth Kingdom. Your people aren’t just going to accept that, especially with you as their leader.”
Zuko actually laughed at that, and he gave her a sideways smile. Months ago, staring into his hardened eyes used to bring her close to tears. Seeing him smile now, reassuring doubts that seemed so pointless in the face of his love—even after everything, Y/N considered herself the luckiest girl in the world.
“Y/N, we’ve gone across the whole world doing things no one ever has,” Zuko said. “The seven of us are going to end a war that’s been going on for a century. Aang is going to defeat my father, and he shouldn’t even be alive. We’ve beat every single odd against us. I think getting my people to like you will be the easiest thing we have to handle.”
“You think so?” she asked. The tension had dissolved some from her shoulders, her worries dissuading with each honeyed word.
“I know so,” Zuko assured. “I’m gonna have to change the Fire Nation from the ground up. There’s no one else I’d want by my side while I do it. My people will see you the way I do, and they’ll love you just as much.”
Y/N leaned closer and pressed a kiss to his lips. Sometimes she still couldn’t get over the fact that she could just… do that. Just kiss him, just smile with him, just be happy with him. Yue shone down on them as she pulled away, Zuko’s features glowing in the moonlight, and Y/N hoped her friend knew she was so much of the reason she’d gotten here.
Happiness seemed out of reach, out of her cards entirely, for such a long time, and when she had it, it always felt like such a precarious thing. Sometimes she still remembered those days in the tea shop, the night in the catacombs.
But with Zuko finally by her side, it was a tangible thing. Something she deserved. Something she already had.
“We’ll do it all together,” she murmured.
“Together,” Zuko agreed.
And she laid back down on the sand, bringing Zuko with her. He pulled her closer, tucked into his side as he wrapped his arm around her. They laid there in silence, Zuko’s warmth heating her from the inside out, staring up at the starry night sky and reveling in the feeling of just being with each other.
Together.

Toph and zuko “I thought we were friends” and “wasn’t I worth a goodbye?”
"Where are you going?"
Toph can feel the familiar footsteps as Zuko approaches, which is good, considering the way his voice echoes in the open hallway. She doesn't bother to turn around.
"What does it look like?" she asks, an edge to her voice she's too tired to conceal.
"Like you're about to walk into a wall," he says, and Toph smirks at the sense of confusion in his voice.
"Into, through," she shrugs. "Why do you care?"
"Why do I--" Nothing burns, but she can smell the singe anyways. "I thought we were friends. You're sneaking out in the middle of the night--"
"I'm not sneaking," Toph cuts him off. "And it's not my fault you people think the middle of the night is a weird time to be up."
"Did something happen?" she hates the worry in his voice.
"No. And that's the problem." She frowns. His foot, in a fancy silk slipper, slides backwards on the polished floor, a tiny whisper of noise her bending catches better than her ears. "I can't live like this. There's too many people, and they're all--bustling. Sweeping the floor I'm walking on, acting like I'm going to drown if I so much as step towards your Turtle-duck pond. The Gaang fussing was bad enough till they figured out I'm more competent than any of them, I can't take it another minute of this. Happy?"
"Why didn't you say something?" Zuko asks, moving to sit. She can hear the silk of his robes brushing against itself in the folds. Someone must have alerted him, and he can running, even though the air was chilly with night. She's determined not to let him pull what his uncle does. But she sits.  The bench is oddly out of place, cooled lavastone, without glaze or polishing to make it seem like something it isn't. She runs her fingers over the lumpy surface.
"You and everyone else have countries to rebuild," she says. "You've got stuff to deal with. And don't try to say I'm more important than that, because of the two of us, I'm the one who's had parents treat me like the most precious object in the world and it really, really sucks. Also, I'm not an idiot. "
"I wasn't going to say that," Zuko lies.
"Yeah. So I just figured I'd get out of here for a while. Go explore for real. Who thought I'd miss camping?"
"Toph..."
"And you can't forbid me to go. I don't answer to you, Firelord," she finishes.
"I wasn't going to. I just.. You were just going to leave? without telling anyone? Wasn't I worth a goodbye, at least?"
"I never say goodbye," Toph says, tapping her bare toes on the polished stone flags. Something's not right with Zuko's heartbeat, with his breathing. It takes a moment for her to place the changes. He's crying. Which...Fuck. "It's not like I'm not coming back. You know that, right?"
"What?" Zuko says, trying to disguise the sound. "I... yes. Of course I do."
That's a lie, too.
"Zuko. I'm not going to flee into the woods forever. I just need some space for a bit. I don't miss camping more than I'd miss you guys. I'll come back. I promise."
"When?"
She sighs. "Couple of days. Okay?"
"...okay. You know Katara's going to kill you."
"Pft, she can try." She grins, and wonders if he could see it. "Thanks,  Zuko. for understanding.  I'll remember for next time."
"I'll see you in a few days," he says, suddenly formal. "Please don't break my palace wall."
"I'll put it back," she says. "Bye, Zuko."

this is so cheesy but i couldn't stop thinking about it
Zukaang aladdin au!! look i just really really need them to sing a whole new world on a magic Appa carpet ride while staring lovingly into each other's eyes. the balcony scene is also peak zukaang. zuko's dragon druk (instead of jasmine's tiger) sniffing and growling at aang until he realizes he is Safe. Momo is Abu in this case. Hmmm who is prince zuko being married off to? (my vote is zhao=jafar lol)
Omgggg anon! I genuinely love this AU idea. It actually works so well, especially with Zuko as Jasmine and Aang as Aladdin. All of those iconic moments with Zukaang would just be aaaaaaa. So beautiful. You’re making me want to make fan art of this now lol.
I think you’re right that Zhao is the closest counterpart to Jafar, but also if I were to personally try and adapt this AU, I would probably just do away with the whole “marrying the love interest off to the villain” plot lol (it always made me uncomfortable in the original movie anyway). In my version, Iroh would probs take on the role of Jasmine’s dad (the Sultan), Zhao would be Jafar, of course Momo would be Abu and Appa would be the magic carpet, but idek who the genie would be… Sokka (fits the comedic aspect)? Avatar Roku (fits the mystical advice-giver aspect)?? lmao.
Though I guess technically it also doesn’t have to be a one-to-one direct adaptation of everything that happens in Aladdin - like it could just be about Zuko being the FN prince who wants to see the world and not be married off to a rando, while Iroh is his kindly father figure/Fire Lord, and Zhao is the advisor trying to take over the FN. Aang is of course the scrappy street orphan who manages to catch his eye, and maybe he’s also secretly the Avatar who went missing as a baby? Either way he would have hair in this AU lol.
Maybe Toph is one of Zuko’s close friends - she’s a rich girl from another country who lives in the FN bc her parents are like the ambassadors for the EK or something, but she and Zuko often sneak out so they can have “normal” days in the city (and so Toph can fight in underground bending tournaments). Maybe Katara and Sokka are some of Aang’s friends who are also peasants - I can’t really think of how else they’d fit into the story unfortunately lol.
Anywaysssss sorry for the long ass reply anon, you got me to start seriously brainstorming for a second there haha! Idk if I’ll ever write an actual fic, but I’m definitely seriously gonna consider making some fan art for this AU concept… :)

The Chase
Saving the commentary for next time. I haven't actually listened to any of the commentary tracks. Are they worth it?
Tumblr media
Disney princess Aang.
There is no way the Air Nomads didn't have some sort of textile-based industry with that much shedding going on.
Sorry Katara, but Toph is much more Goblin than girl.
In a completely unsurprising move, the 12 year old formerly caged only child high on her first taste of freedom takes it too far.
Tumblr media
The beat up Sokka quota is fulfilled! 3 minutes and ten seconds in might be a new record.
Tumblr media
This is the kind of miscommunication I can get behind. Katara thinks they've had this whole fight complete with big issues, a falling out and a need to apologise. Toph has no idea that there are any issues.
Tumblr media
Comfy.
Tumblr media
What kind of cows are they expecting to meet to necessitate that!?!
How exactly is Toph supposed to help unload anyway? Unloading = throwing things down from a place she can't see. The last time anyone threw something to her from Appa she got beaned in the head. I get that she could help set up tents maybe, but unless Appa's saddle is made of stone she can't see it or anyone on it.
Tumblr media
I get that they're all tired, but I'm with Toph on this one.
Sokka! Truly a man of wisdom. Sometimes all you should do is sit back and watch the fireworks.
Did Katara just insult Toph for being blind? Not cool.
Tumblr media
Why would a tent made of stone have seams?
I love how when Sokka sticks his head under the covers his voice gets muffled.
Pushing Appa this hard has got to be borderline abusive. And how it keeps finding you? Maybe the trail of breadcrumbs maguffin you spent the first scene of the episode setting up? These poor kids are dumb when they're tired.
Zuko's so angry that his anger wins out as a descriptor over the whole 'half his face is missing' thing. That's impressive.
"Fun and Perky!" Honestly, no comment. Trying to put "FuN and PeRkY" in the same sentence as Sokka broke my brain.
Tumblr media
"There's no way they could have possibly followed us" except for the giant carved pathway up to where you are?
These three. Hmm. Did not miss them.
Wow those ride on lizards sound annoying!
Since when can lightning demolish walls?
Tumblr media
Pretty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Siblings!
"We've been up all night with no sleep." LIES. FILTHY LIES.
Tumblr media
That's sleep.
You have GOT to be kidding me.
I had not thought about the dangers of ten tonne sleep deprived flying animals.
Katara's really in full bitch mode this episode huh?
Tumblr media
Sokka is the only person with sense this episode. Also love the toilet brush trees.
"We're all just trying to get used to each other." Actually, the only person who had a problem with Toph was Katara.
Sokka speaks truth and has his priorities in order. What else can I say? This guy rocks.
Tumblr media
This guy can't catch a break.
I hope Appa was napping during that bath.
Tumblr media
I take it back. They're not toilet brushes. They're moustaches.
And that's all you're getting for today folks because I just lost power!
edit: part 2 + wrap up is posted.

I just finished watching Netflix's Avatar The Last Airbender and its totally awesome!!! I know I'm two months late coz I'm so busy rn 😭 Although I'm not an OG during covid with my family especially with my nephew and niece but we love the show.
Anyway, my thoughts on this adaptation is you will enjoy this if you separate it with the animated series. Me and my family enjoyed it! Zuko and Iroh were my faves in the animated one and also in this adaptation. (God, I love Dallas's Zuko!) They were written good here, probably they're writers fave coz they stumbled on Katara's and Aang character development. They kinda missed on Katara being feisty and Aang's playfulness. But I still love Kiawentiio and Gordon (These are my children!!!) Hope writers improved them by the next seasons to come. I love Ian's Sokka! And I also love the addition of 41st division as the one Zuko saved from being a sacrifice thus caused him a scar.
There's so much in my head right now, I'm so happy I got to watched it. Glad they got seasons 2 and 3 renewed coz I really wanna see Toph! She's one of my faves too! I hope they cast her perfectly 💖

A Game for Katara
To celebrate her birthday, Katara’s closest friends orchestrated a small getaway to Ember Island. The weather there was ideal this time of year, though it never really grew too cold. After a bountiful supper and quite a few drinks, the small group settled around an intimate campfire on the beach. Spirits were high as they laughed and chatted together for hours. It was as if they hadn’t missed any time, spending the last year scattered separately across the world.
“Alright, alright,” Sokka announces with the slightest hint of a slur, “I have a game. In honor of my sister,” he puts a cup-filled hand out to gesture in her direction, “for her birthday, everyone has to sum her up… using only one word. I…” he takes a large gulp of his drink, “will go first—bossy.”
No one laughs as loud as he, and Katara takes the jab from her brother in the calmest stride.
“Wow, thank you, Sokka!” She responds in mock appreciation.
“You’re so welcome,” answers Sokka without a trace of regret.
Katara twists her face into a vindictive smile before asking, “why don’t you have some more to drink,” and she bends the liquid from his cup right into his face causing him to cough and sputter.
Beside him, Suki laughs. “You deserve that!” She turns back to Katara, “I’ll go next: fair, in both balance and beauty.”
Her compliment is genuine and Katara thanks her directly.
“I think you’re lovely, Katara” adds Ty Lee, giving her a bright smile and coy shrug of her shoulder.
“Thank you, Ty Lee. This is so embarrassing….” Her face grows hot with the extra attention and she shakes her head.
“My turn!” Toph declares loudly, though she has not been imbibing as the most of the group has.
“Careful…” Aang warns next to her, quietly out of the side of his mouth.
But “sweetness” is all she has to say, stretching out the ‘s’ sound, and Katara cannot discern how much she means to offend her. Still, she accepts the submission with sisterly love.
“You’re up, Twinkles,” Toph says, nudging Aang on his arm with hers with more force than was necessary. His eyebrows raise and he inhales sharply.
“It’s so hard to choose just one, uh…” he looks up, searching the starry sky for an answer. He wants to get this right.
“How about… pretty.” His face fully blushes, but Katara cannot respond before Sokka mumbles into his freshly filled cup.
“Pretty bossy.”
Suki hits him in the chest causing him to spit. “You are not going to make it through the night!” Everyone laughs at the exchange and Suki playfully puts a hand over his mouth urging him to give it a rest. Sokka responds with a suggestive wiggle of his eyebrows and Suki gives him a coquettish giggle.
“Okay, Zuko’s turn,” says Toph with a twinge of annoyance, actively drawing attention away from the couple. “What’ve you got for us, Sparky?” All quiet to hear his response.
“I’m sorry,” he looks around the group, slightly panicked. “I don’t have… a word.”
Katara blinks, somewhat crestfallen but hides her disappointment well enough. It’s Sokka who does not let him off easily.
“What?” he yells in exaggerated indignation. “That’s not the game that I just made up! You have to say a word!” He guards his mouth with his hand, but speaks in a whisper loud enough for all to hear. “Hey, I have a word you can borrow—.” But he is cut off by Suki who fully pushes him off the driftwood they had been sharing and onto the sand.
Zuko remains at a loss for words but catches Katara’s eyes from across the fire. She quickly decides to save them both from any further embarrassment.
“It’s fine. We don’t have to keep playing, it was just a way for Sokka to tease me anyway.” Sokka makes his way to kneel beside her, visibly inebriated.
“You know I’m only joking, Sis, you’re the best!” He throws his arms around her and lands a sloppy kiss on her cheek causing her to scrunch her nose in a smile. “Where would I even be without you,” he asks, resting his head on her shoulder.
“Where would any of us be, without Katara,” Aang adds.
“Here, here!” Katara hears someone say as everyone raises their voices in agreement.
“To Katara.” It is Zuko who raises his cup first, and the rest follow his lead. Katara’s eyes meet his again, and his gentle smile is disconcertingly heartfelt.
They toast her, and Aang tags on an extra ‘Happy birthday!’
Katara can only smile and stare at her feet in the sand, taking in this rare show of appreciation for her. “Thank you, everyone,” she says with sincere gratitude.
They take their final sips for the night and one-by-one begin to disperse, making their ways back to the beach house. A flustered Aang offers her a hug, which she returns, but lets go of before he is ready to. He leaves her with a last ‘goodnight’ and Katara stays to gather items that still need to go inside.
That fact that Zuko is last to linger makes the crackle of fire seem much louder than before when other voices were there to drown it out.
“Hey, I got this,” he offers as he attempts to take over her self-appointed chore.
“Oh, you don’t have to—.”
“It’s your birthday, don’t worry about it,” he insists. “You deserve a break more than anyone.”
She relents with hesitation, biting her lip, unsure of how to respond to his act of service. Zuko continues to straighten up with intent. Despite herself, Katara speaks.
“So… you have… no words for me, huh?” She lets out a small laugh, attempting aloofness, but hopes for an adequate answer from him just the same.
“Hm?”
It’s all he’s willing to give her. Surely, he couldn’t be that focused on such a simple task. He must have heard her, so she pushes on.
“Sokka’s stupid game… you couldn’t come up with… anything?” Her act of indifference is rapidly waning.
“Uh, no… sorry.”
Katara knows she does not possess the talent of suppressing her own irritation, but she continues to try.
“You couldn’t have just said I was… I don’t know… nice, or something?” And she is aware on some level that this is a foolish endeavor, childish even, despite the earlier celebration of her age and maturation. She is stubborn and cannot shake this, not with him.
“Nice?” Zuko almost snorts, causing Katara’s stomach to twist even further in agitation. “Not a chance.”
“Excuse me,” she asks with incredulity as a painful wave of anger reaches its crest within her. At this, Zuko abandons his cleaning efforts to face her from across the ever-growing campfire, her mounting rage clearly not lost on him now. Flames lick at his features obscuring her view from his expression. For a long moment they both stood frozen, silently challenging the other to speak.
Zuko breaks first.
“Katara, you’re…” he struggles, shaking his head.
She waits for his answer without breathing. Why is this so difficult for him? And yet, it was proving just as demanding for her to form words. He manages to continue, with a tone of defeat.
“You are…,” he swallows hard, gestures with his open hands, “passionate… compassionate…” she finally exhales at this, listening with soft surprise, “…powerful…” he continues his list.
Katara’s eyes flutter, forced to recalibrate her stance from one of attack, to being the one attacked. Something about his strained speech made her feel that they were teetering on the edge of a dark precipice, a secret thing they’d been dancing around since their friendship began. Perhaps even longer than that. It frightens her and excites her too. Zuko takes a few steps around the fire to lessen the space between them and her heart beats a little faster. He has already started and doesn’t bother stopping now.
“Fiercely loyal, entirely capable on the battlefield,” he pauses, “…emotional…” he says with a devious little smirk that simultaneously eases the tension and makes her heart skip a beat. She looks away with a smile, accepting his assessment of her, and giving her prior hostility a break. He takes a few more steps and when she looks back up she must raise her head a bit for their eyes to meet again. This proves more uncomfortable than it probably should between friends, like walking in on an intimate conversation that was not meant for her to hear. But she keeps her position, unable to breathe again.
“…and probably the most courageous person I’ve ever known.” Zuko says this last part in a much lower voice to make up for the change in proximity. Katara finds it hard to swallow and bites her lip again, unsure of what might come out of her own mouth. Her eyes flick down to Zuko’s lips and back up to his eyes, golden and wild with the reflection of dancing flames.
He is breathing slowly but a little harder now as he searches her face.
“One word could never suffice,” he considers as he unconsciously licks his lips, “and ‘nice’…” he emphasizes with a furrowed brow and curt laugh, “…wouldn’t even make the cut.”
“And…,” she finally swallows, “you couldn’t say any of that before,” Katara asks breathlessly. Zuko blinks, his eyes shifting downward.
“Not in front of the others…” he whispers, more to himself and looking back up, “but I mean it. All of it.” He is earnest in his affirmation.
Katara manages the barest nod. “I believe you,” she assures him, her vocal chords almost breaking.
They stand, close to each other, closer now than ever to something else still unnamed. Zuko hesitates, but pushes himself forward. When he speaks, his voice is raspy and so low she can barely hear it over the thrumming of her own heartbeat.
“Happy birthday, Katara.”
He leans in to place a tender kiss on her cheek, very unlike the one from her brother. It is careful, unhurried, and hints of something hidden away, just beneath the surface. Her eyes flutter closed and her heart pumps blood hard through her body while she stands paralyzed by the novelty of it all. His face hovers next to hers for a moment, leaving a phantom burn where his lips had touched. When he does pull away, it’s slow and his lengthened hair brushes against her skin, firing chills down her neck, causing her to shiver.
All she can hear now are the sounds of a thousand ocean waves, breaking and crashing all around them. It’s so much colder without his intense heat next to her and he backs further away to finish up his task. New thoughts and suppressed feelings stir around inside her, not taking any solid form quite yet. This inner chaos only perpetuated her ongoing paralysis.
If she doesn’t want him to walk away then she must do or say something, anything, but…
…all this passionate, compassionate, powerful, courageous girl can do in this moment is… remember to breathe.
By the time her senses return, the young Fire Lord, her former enemy, arms full of dirty towels and cups, speaks once more before making his way back to the house.
“I hope it was… nice.” A sly smirk returns to his mouth, but his eyes flash with something honest and hopeful.
Katara couldn’t say if she managed to return his smile, but she was definitely breathing, harder than ever. She was alone now, with just her own racing thoughts for company. She looked back at the bonfire, instantly transfixed by the light animated against the dark and monstrous ocean. Despite the entire day dedicated to her, she felt small and lost, the air around her growing colder by the second and she braced herself. Moving closer to the heat, she realized she had a choice to make now. She should just extinguish the flame now, snuff it out before it could grow any larger, before anyone got hurt. Or…
…she could just let the fire burn on through the night.

I think my 2 biggest problems with natla have become what I see people saying the most in its defense.
no, they did not "only" have 8 episodes to tell the story. the runtimes of the original and the nf adaptation are about the same--especially if we consider making cuts to the most filler-ish episodes (11 for sure, and 14 maaaaaybe. I'm torn on 5 because it informs us of how the EK still isn't free of the FN even though we just saw a stronghold, omashu, and also foreshadows how innovative and strong toph really is to be the first to bend metal). anyway, they've got the same amount of time to tell the story and yet it still suffers from pacing issues. it still suffers from the characters feeling hollow and just kind of "stuck together" and never forming a true family bond.
and the 2nd thing is the people who say "well it's an adaptation of a kids show, why does it need to have depth?" when...the original is definitely digestible for children, and s1 is for sure different in tone than s2+3, but...I was a middle schooler who loved it. my dad never missed an episode because he was just as invested. it was the only show my high school aged siblings didn't make fun of me for watching, because it was a mature enough story for everyone to enjoy. someone else said it, but that's why the story is so timeless, it's why we're all still fans, it's why we've all taken so many years to discuss the themes and the characters (people are still arguing over Aangs choice not to kill the Firelord, for goodness sake lol). I don't care how "hehe fun times" the show starts out--by the THIRD episode, we see Gyatso's skeleton and the total ruin of Aang's home.
and on that same note, we didn't need to see the genocide. we didn't need to see Ozai burn a man alive. but we did--okay, the show wants to be NF's game of thrones. why, then, is the story written so that the characters spoon feed us exposition? why, then, do we see the genocide happening instead of witnessing the devastation of the world organically through the eyes of these children? everything we see in the original informs us in some way of the state of the world. we see Aang's struggle between wanting to carry on living how he wanted, and how much he believes in the power of silliness (telling Katara, "you ARE still a kid!") and how unfair it is that he, essentially, has no choice (and by the way, his drives to have fun and avoid his destiny/the guilt he feels over near-apocalyptic circumstances being "his fault" for running away, are why it's such an impactful moment when he must "show no emotion at all" in meeting Koh, essentially forsaking everything he's embodied for 19 episodes straight to get the info he needs to help save the Northern Water Tribe--natla manages to suck all the meaning out of that, as well)
anyway. if it's "mindless fun just turn your brain off it's for kids" then why the heck is it so violent. why the heck is it stripped of any and all opportunity for a kid to learn important things that were present in the original, which trusted its audience (including the kids) with mature themes and didn't feel the need to dumb itself down at almost any moment at all. I don't understand. make it make sense.

ALSKFJG to be fair Reedy i for one am not complaining about the length over here, there's a thrill to each update. Idk if I've mentioned before that the first thing i do when I'm scrolling through ao3 is to set my filters tl show only complete works. I'm not strong enough to deal with uncompleted works, but at the same time, if i go on too long like that, i end up missing the thrill of just... Going along for the ride, checking when there's an update, hyping myself uo when there IS and I'm not ready to deal with it, taking a moment to breathe after i read it, get lost in the possibilities of what's to come until the next chapter comes out
Like... It is fun, to be able to enjoy a story to it's fullest extent, and there's a certain joy that can't be replicated by reading it all in one sitting, a joy that comes from having to sit with what you have and *wonder*
And BOI am i fucking wondering what's going to happen, i have a ticking time bomb stressing me out constantly in the form of a somewhat unhinged but ultimately baby 14 year old called Azula, and meanwhile zuko is sneaking into sokka's bedroom and I'm just here sitting watching reading knowing that's just BEGGING for trouble bc WHAT IF SOMEONE COMES IN, and also toph absolutely knows bc she literally can feel the extra heartbeat but she minds the business that pays her
I hope it's that, anyways, and not toph waiting for the moment to bully sokka, which i WOULD appreciate but... I wouldn't wish to be sokka for that if that's the plan. And talking about bullying. JET JET JET JET. You've got me over here stressed out for jet waking up bc like... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH. PAIN. I WANT HIS PAIN. I CRAVE HIS SUFFERING. I NEED TO SEE WHAT HE'LL DO NOW. Reedy what have you done to me. You have me rooting for jet. In a twisted backwards way but still
And katara deserves the world, she has no idea what's coming and god will she hate it but she's doing her best she deserves some vacations. They're not coming tho. Bc as soon as jet wakes up to cause problems on purpose she'll probably find out zukka is a thing and she still doesn't like zuko so the poor girl is bound for whiplash and then the water tribe is getting into ba sing se but not for long! Because Azula is a menace and she's out for blood and i oove her but that kid needs to be adopted soon before she burns the world (is she going to get adopted? Puppy eyes over here begging for her to be adopted. She'd look great in water tribe blue) (i know that's not what this story is about but a guy can dream ok?)
Anyways. This is what you do when you leave me to think about the future of the story for too long. The possibilities are simmering in my brain
-Fragile heart
Hahaha - well we are officially on this journey together pal! Im glad you hopped on before we got to the end lol.
Im confident a certain earth bender knows that a certain highly strung fire bender is sneaking in through the window at night. Im sure she is just waiting for the right time to commence the teasing.
Jets awakening won’t be next chapter but the one after that! (I couldn’t fit it all this next chapter haha) but it’ll be a mess I can assure you that.
Katara isn’t getting a break anytime soon! & no I’m sure she won’t be THRILLED to find out about zukka mostly because her interaction with Zuko doesn’t go so smoothly next chapter ha……. Oops
As for azula…. Hmmm….. we’ll see ;)

ao3 first lines tag game
thanks for the tag @itsmoonpeaches and @northerngoshawk!
Rules: Share the first lines of ten of your most recent fanfics and tag ten people. If you have written fewer than ten, don’t be shy and share anyway.
1.  Missing Pieces
“Looks like we’ve got everything,” Sokka declared with a satisfied hand on his hip.
2.  Lifeblood
Aang reached up through the prickly undergrowth, straining to grasp the narrow ridge above his head. Branches like talons drew slashes of red down his exposed arm.
“Are you sure you’ll be all right?” Katara had asked him, her voice quiet with concern.
3.  The Cost of Winning
The stillness that comes after battle blankets the city.
Katara breathes in the frozen air. Cold sears her lungs. She is alive.
4.  Drag You Down
“I wish I had never followed you out to the balcony that day,” Katara said.
Aang stopped breathing. His chest constricted, her words like shards of ice piercing his heart.
He knew this day was coming. He didn’t want to believe it, but he knew.
5.  Mooncake
“Come on,” Aang whispered. “I want to show you something.”
6.  Without Water
The first thing Katara did when she set foot on her father’s ship was to look for water.
“Make sure you always have water on hand,” Yagoda had once instructed her. “For without water, a healer’s bending is useless.”
7.  Everlasting
“I can’t believe this is the last time we’re all going to be together,” Aang said, casting a wistful gaze around the table—or, technically, tables.
8.  To Owe an Ostrich Horse
“’Ey! Did I ever tell you that Farmer Zei owes me an ostrich horse?” Jinhai said, calling over to Wen. “For ‘borrowing’—” he waggled his fingers to form air quotes “—my best plow?”
9.  Close to You
Aang was no Toph, but he felt Katara walking over before he saw her.
10.  Arrows and Braids
Aang was staring at a pair of scissors in his hand when Katara walked over.
“What are you doing with Sokka’s scissors?” she asked.

'Lake Laogai'
I think this is the first episode where Sokka's artistic 'skills' are really addressed. Okay, I'll admit, it's a genuinely funny comic relief Sokka moment.
I'm a bit upset at Iroh for having zero loyalty to the man who hired him and Zuko, two refugees off the street. Not saying he shouldn't have accepted the Upper Ring offer, but he was kind of a dick about it. 10 Jerk Points.
I'm really curious about the game Katara and Sokka were playing. I wonder if anyone knows what it was.
I get that Aang is frustrated about being stymied by the Dai Li and their bureaucracy, but Toph lashing out and destroying a part of the house is just... dumb? You live there, dumbass. Just destroy someone else's house. 20 Jerk Points.
Long Feng is a clever villain, despite his eventual demise. Him acknowledging that he can't confront the Avatar directly is a smart strategic realization. Misdirecting the Gaang to leave Ba Sing Se and go all the way back to South Pole to look for Appa is a great plan, actually. He couldn't have known about Jet's connection to Smellerbee and Longshot.
Guess who's back? Back again? Jet is back. Tell Katara... who is more violent than I remembered her being, but you know what, good for her. I wonder about her blush there. Was it all just from anger? I like to think it was the memory of her crush on Jet. I think it's all but confirmed by Katara's reaction to Toph calling out her lies of having feelings for Jet.
Sokka is pretty clever to realize that Jet has been brainwashed by the Dai Li, although I have to wonder... how did he know that brainwashing even is a thing that exists? There are a lot of interesting little details in the scenes with the Gaang trying to break Jet's conditioning. Aang not liking Sokka's idea that Katara should kiss Jet, whatever, shut up Aang. I had completely missed the detail that it was Mongke and Rough Rhinos who burned down Jet's village. They're Iroh's old buddies, I shouldn't be surprised. Also, I love Katara still deciding to soothe Jet's mind with her bending even if she's deeply mistrustful of him.
The secret HQ of the Dai Li is a scary place. The training of Joo Dee's... what a creepy scene. The Dai Li agents hanging from the cavern ceilings like some kind of creepy bats, that was pretty awesome. You have to admit that Jet is a badass when it comes to a fight. I also like how Long Feng being a very different kind of villain comes across in this scene. As soon as the battle starts to turn, he makes the calculated move to flee.
Iroh confronting Zuko in the catacombs was an interesting scene. Iroh finally has his golden ticket of having an Upper Ring teahouse of his own. He's got it made. He's not going to let his nephew's bullshit ruin his dream, so it's time for some tough love.
Comparing Zuko trying to steal Appa with his kidnapping of Aang at the North Pole was very on point. They are both the worst examples of Zuko's plans. Zuko tries to brush it off as if doing stupid shit has something to do with his 'destiny'.  But I also think Iroh's point about Zuko trying to follow someone else's idea of his destiny would come across better if Iroh himself wasn't pushing the destiny of Zuko serving tea onto his nephew. There really is a huge disconnect between the life that Iroh wants for Zuko and the life Zuko himself wants. Can anyone here see Zuko being happy serving tea? I can't. Iroh seems to be the only one.
Also, doesn't Iroh later embrace Zuko's destiny of becoming the Fire Lord anyway?
I have said that I'm not a big fan of Jetara, absolutely not as endgame, but I still think the way some of Jet's thoughts that helped him break Long Feng's mind control focused on his feelings for Katara was very tragically romantic. Anyway... I have very mixed feelings about Jet's death. No, actually I hate it. We've seen Katara heal some pretty bad injuries, and Jet didn't look that badly hurt? A part of me is now left thinking that if Longshot and Bee hadn't asked Katara to leave maybe she could have still saved him? Also, uh, she had the spirit water... I wrote an entire 70 chapter story about Katara using it on Zuko in Crystal Catacombs, and being unable to save Aang. It would have made ten times more sense if Katara had used it on Jet, and ugh, I now wish I had written that scenario instead. Honestly, it would have been far more in character for Katara to stay and save Jet. Also, check out the shot of Katara as they fly away. She had real and strong feelings for Jet. I haven't sensed anything remotely strong (romantically) towards Aang up to this point of the story.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Appa returns and wipes the floor with the Dai Li. I guess it's something positive at the end of a depressing episode. For mind-controlling Jet and killing him, Long Feng gets 350 Jerk Points.
Jerk Points for Book 2:
Iroh, Long Feng - 560 Azulon - 300 Ursa, General Fong  - 200 Aang - 160 Zuko, Toph - 120 Ozai - 100 Sokka - 70 Bumi, Lao Beifong, King Kuei - 50 Pakku - 30

What's your over all opinion on legend of korra? I would love to hear it? Mine it's a mess. It had potential especially in the first season and a few moments here or there. I especially think Korra herself had big potential and the villians. But over all the writing was a mess. And it feels like the writers wasted a lot of time on stupid stuff, and messed up past characters backstories. Lots of orginal characters had so much potential to be better than they were. Example Asami. I soooo wanted her to have a Zuko type arc. For her to be working with her father and Amon. But have a change of heart because of team avatar. Team Avatar also especially has some issues. Compared to the orginal gaang they just don't feel like friends. They just feel like people who got entangled together over stupid relationship drama. The villians in legend of korra I feel like are the best part of avatar. Where it really shines. The avatar lore is iffy. Hit or miss at times. But I do enjoy some of it. I just wish the writers would have stuck to past lore and not just made up whatever the hell they want.
Hi, thanks for the ask!
I feel very similarly; I really liked Korra herself, but the other characters didn’t feel as developed to me and I couldn’t get invested in them. I also generally did not like the portrayal of the original ATLA characters (especially Katara and Toph).
The villains were good, but I felt like a lot of them got done in by bad plots. For example, I thought Book 2 was setting up an interesting civil war type drama between North/South Water Tribes, and the villain being Korra’s uncle was an interesting twist. But then they just made it a weird spirit-zilla fight which was not only dumb but changed the lore considerably. Then in Book 4 they had literal giant robot mechs with laser beams. Felt completely out of place in the ATLA universe.
I think the comics had the same issue. Writers just made up more spirit lore to fix plot holes and it just felt like it didn’t fit with the original show.
You’re right about Asami too! She would have been so interesting starting as a spy/villain and being caught between her family and Korra, but she ended up being a character the writers didn’t seem to know what to do with. They just used her to create predictable and boring relationship drama.
Anyways that’s my brief thoughts on it, there was potential but I didn’t feel strongly about characters besides Korra and the plots were not well written in my opinion.

hello!!!!! hair anon here!!!!! i’m so sorry i haven’t commented the last few chapters, i’ve been in thesis-writing hell and also doing other things hell. BUT!!!!!!! I am here because I missed responding to your last few chapters and also because I am DEAD over the newest chapter. DEAD. but also VINDICATED. because sokka’s hair is finally long enough to put back in his wolf tail 😭 all that time stressing about their hair, and he and i are finally free 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
just. AHHHHH. oh man also POOR MAI!!!!! so a crazy thing that happened is about ten or so chapters ago i got the crazy idea that what if ozai and mai got married? because i thought it was going to be azula and zhao initially but then i wasn’t sure that’s where that was heading. and then i was like, well, mai and ozai would make sense in the world of the fic and would be soul-destroying… so maybe…? and then kind of dismissed it bc it felt too far-fetched and like you were going the azula marrying someone route. let me tell you. I have never felt worse in my life about being right about something 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
but ajdksk AHHH. I’m never going to get over how you write all these characters!! I LOVE sokka and zuko, as always, especially them touching foreheads right in the middle of the camp 😭 and i LOVE how katara and zuko interact, holy shit. that convo they had in the last chapter?? i LOST IT. Also I’m OBSESSED with the potential future interactions of toph and zuko. I’m really excited for them to interact more!!!!!!!!!! And maybe bond over being visually impaired/Blind and maybe working on using bending as an accessibility aid together?? 👀👀👀👀👀👀 also IROH AND AZULA. AZULA AND KAZUMA. Their last conversation had me biting my nails and ALSO laughing. this poor man can’t catch a break 😭 also I LOVE azula’s sudden and violent turn against ozai. you know. less so the reasons for it. 😬 but i’m very pro characters being anti-ozai! so….. yay?
anyways i have so much more I want to say and I know I’m forgetting things but I want to keep this shorter so THANK YOU, SO MUCH, AS ALWAYS!!! You are an inspiration and I am so, so in love with your story and writing. I hope you’re having a good day when you see this, and I am waiting patiently but SO eagerly for the next chapter 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Hello, Hair!Anon!
I hope things are going well with you and the thesis hell has not been too hard on you! As you can tell from my late reply, my life has also been a little hectic, and my brain is at a barely functioning level 😂
And yes, Sokka's hair is nearly at the point of being back as it should be, your long wait is over!
Glad you enjoyed the chapters! Katara and Zuko remain great fun to write, and there will be some Toph & Zuko coming up soon too, as a treat.
Azula and Iroh, and Azula and Kazuma have been the surprise most fun team ups (well, team up and victim of blackmail) to write. I have been enjoying plotting out their interconnecting stories a lot.
I hope you enjoy the next chapter too (its done, just needs a beta read, so should be out this weekend, oor next depending - its a long one)
Thank you as always for the lovely comment! Hope you are having a great week! ❤️
