There are now 10 main characters on The Rookie — rank them! 😈
Why, Sarah? Why?? Although, maybe it's not as hard as I thought? We shall see..
Tim and Lucy (1 & 2) I think these two are pretty self-explanatory, right? They both just got a very special place in my heart, both separately and together. I could cry over how for they've both come since the first episode. I could also write an essay here but I don't think I could stop before the new episode airs so I won't lol.
Angela (3) I just love her, okay? Always have, always will. My favorite no-nonsense detective.
Grey (4) Because he's the papa bear of the group and cares for every single officer at that station.
Aaron (5) Because he's just awesome. I won't lie, I wasn't sure what to make of his character at first, but I've come to really love him since then. His comedic relief? Perfect. Him partnered up with Tim? Chef's kiss.
Harper (6) Because she doesn't take shit from anyone and could easily take any guy twice her size and put him in his place.
Wesley (7) Listen, I like the guy, but with all the other characters we have he just.. moves down the list pretty quickly? But I do love that he's not some a**hole lawyer like others have been portrayed on the show, and that he's actually fighting for the right people.
Celina (8) Again, I can't say I dislike her, but I'm also not her biggest fan. Obviously, she's still a rookie, but there's been a few things that never would've been accepted when Lucy and Nolan were rookies. That one scene where she essentially goes off at Tim in 5x19 (?) comes to mind. I can't believe she didn't get at least a firm talking to.
Bailey (9) Okay, so.. here's the thing with Bailey. I've always been bothered by how she seemingly knows how to do everything and has about 135 different jobs. They seem to have tampered that one down quite a bit recently, but she still only interacts with Nolan, except for a quick conversation with someone else here or there. I said this in another post recently, but I think if she were more involved with others, I might like her better.
Nolan (10) What does it say about me (and maybe the character) that the titular character is my least favorite out of 10? I know not everyone would agree with me here, but I just.. don't care about him? I'm mad at him, or how obviously different he's being treated sometimes, every other episode; 6x04 being the latest example because there are literally no consequences when he messes up and then he ends up on the TV only hours later?? Come on. I know he's a new TO, but he's had so many ridiculously great role models and yet, here we are. I'm sorry to everyone who likes/loves him, but I just don't care about him at all.
Can Tamara be an honorary mention? I just love how far she's come since we met her and her bond with Lucy is so sweet. I love me some found sisters. I think I'd put her in like.. mh, 4th? 5th?
Whew, okay. So maybe this was a bit tougher than anticipated. Top 3 and bottom 3 were easy, but the rest? Help, that was difficult. Thank you so much for this, Sarah! As tough as some of these asks are to answer, I love doing them nonetheless. 🫶🏻

Jonsa Parallel: Stirring Jon Into Action - one that reiterates who Jon was protecting in 8x06
In 6x04, we get a scene where Jon is about to embark on a journey to head South after what happened in 6x03 (and his murder):
Tumblr media
(sorry I couldn't find the scene on YouTube to link; HBO is coming hard for GoT clips all of a sudden, so far purely Targaryen/Dany/Jon-centric)
He's done. "My watch has ended." He tells Edd he'll go South and get warm. Despite Edd mentioning the NK (which we know that Jon has been laser-focused on since HardHome, why he let the Wildlings past the Wall, and then got murdered for it), Jon has made up his mind. He's leaving and that's that.
But then we hear the horn and the call to open the gate. Sure enough, we see this in the next shot (after Jon with Edd behind him):
Tumblr media
Sansa is shown first as the doors slowly open, then Brienne and then Podrick. We see Jon's reaction to her arrival and the interaction between them after that. Even though Jon has no interest in fighting Ramsay or anyone really, he is sure of one thing: he's not letting Sansa (the only family left to him that he knows of at this point) out of his sight. He makes that clear with the dialogue from the fireplace scene.
Then they get Ramsay's letter. Even then, as horrified as he is by what Ramsay has told them about Rickon and sees Sansa's own horror, he still seems hesitant to do what needs to be done. Especially when hearing outnumbered they're most likely going to be. It's only when Sansa grabs his hand and tells him they need to save Rickon and Winterfell, that she gets him to listen, that he finally agrees. Which leads to him (and Sansa) amassing an army to fight the NK.
Make no mistake, it's Sansa who stirs him into action. Not Edd, not Davos, not Tormund, and certainly not Melisandre. Even after hearing the threat Ramsay posed to Rickon, to Winterfell (and the North by extension), to the Wildlings, etc.
He is given a new purpose so naturally this scene:
Tumblr media
Is soon replaced by this scene:
Tumblr media
And Edd is there to see Jon switch to his new role/purpose:
Tumblr media
This is Jon going into his new arc. And what propelled him into it? Sansa.
Then we have 8x06:
youtube
No matter what Tyrion mentions (including being the shield that guards the realms of men), the people, Tyrion himself, Jon himself, even Arya (in conjunction with Sansa), Jon is not prepared to take action. Even after the KL massacre where a million innocent people were burned alive for no reason. Even after Arya warned him about himself (and Sansa). It's only when Tyrion says that Sansa won't have a choice, that Jon is then gotten through to. It's when Dany confirms that those who oppose her won't have a choice, that he then knows what it means "for those he loves most". It's Sansa again that stirs him into action. And we get:
Tumblr media
It's Sansa who gets him to act, that has him taking on the two threats to her (and Westeros), and Ramsay who was an immediate threat to her. And it was even Sansa who got Ned to act (choosing to confess his treason & dishonor himself), to make the same choice in 1x09 that Jon did in 8x06.
And bonus:
youtube
Does Jon's reaction to first seeing it was Sansa look familiar?
Not to mention they have the obvious callback to "forgive me" which Jon doesn't answer here explicitly (because 1) it's unfinished/open-ended between them & 2) he needed to get Bran's confirmation here that he did the right thing). And of course the hug:
Tumblr media
(notice how Brienne and Tormund are in the 6x04 hug shot btw - love that it's just more proof in the pudding for this whole post)
Tumblr media
It was always about Sansa.

Breaking News: Eddie Diaz is a Liar
Tumblr media
Eddie told the group before he left that he was trying to take a nap....but he was obviously not and very much up playing video games??? He never told anyone he was playing beforehand so they wouldn’t have known. So why would he have to lie about leaving the call? Eddie was literally trying to get out of the conversation, and this was after Buck revealed the news and called himself a father--
Tumblr media
Not only was he the only one not happy about the reveal, but he gets visibly shocked by it?? Or at least in a much different way than Hen and Chinmey. And the video games certainly don’t make it any better.
Tumblr media
He doesn’t even leave the living room for the whole night and even stays in his clothes. Who knows how like he’s been up crying.
Tumblr media
Like Chris in Animal Instincts (6x04), Eddie was up playing video games when he was supposed to be asleep. And just like Chris, he was lying. His behavior here felt so off compared to how we’ve seen Eddie so far this season, getting visibly frustrated and making excuses to leave the conversation (doesn’t even wait to hear everyone’s goodbyes). So what’s with the offset? Especially with both episodes 7 and 8 leaving on such high notes for him?

Note
5 & 8 for the 9-1-1 asks!
5. Favorite song played during a scene.
either 'season of the witch' in 4x14, just because i adore the song and i think it's a fantastically off-beat choice for that whole sequence, or 'bicycle race' in 6x04, for a hilariously apt song choice for a bisexual idiot on a bike
8. Favorite season of the show and why
probably season 4, considering that it contains both The Shooting (tm) and both 'jinx' and 'treasure hunt', which are for sure some of my favorite episodes of the show

this morning i decided to rank every episode in which blaine appears or is mentioned by the merit of their blaine content. because, i don't know, i'm very neurodivergent or something. so here is, in my opinion, the best to worst blaine episodes:
1. 3x15 “Big Brother”: has a micro celebrity older brother, gets very upset about everyone pointing at him, skips skip day, gets a stuffed animal from his boyfriend, doesn’t feel good enough with his brother around, and reconciles
2. 5x07 “Puppet Master”: has an autistic meltdown, gets gas poisoning, imagines everybody loves him, wants to share his core wounds, gives jake strange advice, steals, and sends puppets to new york city
3. 4x07 “Dynamic Duets”: creates a superhero alter ego, meets evil warbler #2, does autistic stuff, and wants to stop feeling like he’s a bad person
4. 2x12 “Silly Love Songs”: makes a fool out of kurt accidentally, makes a fool out of himself in a gap, becomes a part of a ‘when harry met sally’ situationship, and sings two solos
5. 4x03 “Makeover”: becomes a huge nerd and the president, makes a friend, lies to artie, and realizes he is sad and alone
6. 2x20 “Prom Queen”: delivers part three of his traumatic backstory, is very afraid, makes his solo story relevant, and saves the prom!
7. 4x17 “Guilty Pleasures”: likes wham, is a swiftie in the alternate universe of the promo, sings sam a strangely emotional song, and sam is not homophobic to him
8. 3x17 “Dance with Somebody”: tells everybody that it’s not right but it’s okay, doesn’t want to talk about new york, and has weirdly tan hands
9. 2x16 “Original Song”: forms blaine and the pips, ignores mourning a bird in favor of love, conceives of the worst duet idea of all time, gains +1 boyfriend, and sings two solos
10. 2x06 “Never Been Kissed”: shifts the tectonic plates by making his first appearance, sings teenage dream, delivers part one of his traumatic backstory, and thinks that karofsky isn’t coming out anytime soon
11. 4x16 “Feud”: has cement hair, has his identity stolen, is on the bottom, and is forced to join the cheerios again by nicki minaj
12. 6x07 “Transitioning”: gets hit with some eggs, has a serious case of heart eyes, and cheats but in a cool way this time
13. 5x14 “New New York”: cheers up sam, becomes elliott’s facebook friend, has a good talk with kurt, and moves in with mercedes
14. 3x05 “The First Time”: gets virgin shamed, canonically masturbates, meets evil warbler #1, makes out with kurt hummel drunk, and has sex
15. 2x14 “Blame it on the Alcohol”: thinks it’s cool that kurt and finn are brothers, makes out with rachel berry drunk, defends bisexuals, and is 100% gay
16. 3x11 “Michael”: wants to be starting something, gives the warblers sensitive information, and could lose an eye!
17. 4x11 “Sadie Hawkins”: gets asked out by a girl, has a crush on a boy, and finds out the warblers are taking steroids?!
18. 6x04/05 “The Hurt Locker”: forgets his mom’s name, finds a bear in his house, remembers fettuccine alfredo, and sticks his tongue right in someone’s mouth
19. 4x14 “I Do”: gets groped in a prius, has his honor defended, has sex in a hotel room, and knows he and kurt will not be just friends
20. 5x16 “Tested”: has body image issues, watches porn, admits that he’s scared kurt will stop loving him, and is misinterpreted by the entire fandom
21. 4x04 “The Break Up”: screams, cries, throws up, sobs, falls to his knees,
22. 2x09 “Special Education”: helps kurt out at his new school, doesn’t audition for the solo at sectionals, sings the solo at sectionals, gives kurt bird advice
23. 4x10 “Glee, Actually”: who’s blaine? ice skates and has a mature talk
24. 3x01 “The Purple Piano Project”: joins the new directions, unknowingly blows up a piano, and tries his best to be friendly
25. 4x15 “Girls (And Boys) On Film”: sings three duets with three different duet partners, and has a starring role in kurt’s imagination
26. 4x21 “Wonder-ful”: understands kurt unlike anyone else, and wants to marry him
27. 5x01 “Love Love Love”: sings the best duet with kurt, gets back together with him, is more asian than sam and ryder, gathers every show choir in the state, and proposes
28. 6x02 “Homecoming”: gives us some information on his depression, wears curly hair until he remembers people are racist about it, and attempts to solve misogyny
29. 2x15 “Sexy”: takes advice from sue sylvester, is very cringe, and delivers part two of his traumatic backstory
30. 3x02 “I Am Unicorn”: #juniorgate, is the only person respectful of kurt, and gives great audition #1
31. 4x06 “Glease”: continues to suffer, breaks character, and stands hollow eyed in the hallway
32. 3x08 “Hold on to Sixteen” fights sam, fights finn, and does what his father said and let his mother mold him
33. 5x06 “Movin Out”: visits new york, considers being a doctor or a teacher, and is the piano man
34. 2x11 “The Sue Sylvester Shuffle”: sings a banger solo, mercedes and rachel talk at him while he eats, and he attends a mckinley football game
35. 4x01 “The New Rachel”: tells kurt to leave (affectionate) and is the titular character
36. 3x14 “On My Way”: has an emotional breakdown in front of god and everyone, and then raps
37. 4x05 “The Role You Were Born to Play”: cries and sings his best solo, which is great audition #2
38. 2x18 “Born This Way”: sings somewhere only we know, which should make the top but it’s his only scene

44. 4x08 “Thanksgiving”: doesn’t exist until kurt calls him on the phone, and yet it’s such a good phone call that it beats the episodes below
45. 5x11 “City of Angels”: is too gay to lead the glee club, reads the show choir blogs, and has sexual tension with skylar astin
46. 4x12 “Naked”: becomes santa, gets an unnecessary spray tan, and is a supportive friend

64. 4x13 “Diva”: points for him being a guy diva, singing don’t stop me now, being cute when he’s sick, being gay, and liking asian representation, but a huge subtraction for the non consensual touching from tina and him apologizing to her at the end

Faith: And quite a muffin. Buffy: Blueberry. That crunchy, munchy stuff on top. But my most favorite thing so far is that he doesn't seem to be any kind of Hell Beast. Faith: All men are beasts, Buffy. Buffy: Okay, I was hoping to not get that cynical till I was at least forty.

Some have been mentioning the Battle of the Bastards in their reblogs of my post, and I thought I’d give my two cents on it.
The thing is, Sansa’s loyalty to Jon can only go so far. Why? Because the writers needed their strong female character on the show. Many before me have been explaining why it could only be Sansa: D&D are sexists. We know this, there’s no debate about it unless you’re talking to someone very, very stupid. But the female audience of Game of Thrones couldn’t be entirely forgotten. So they needed their “feminist icon”, their “strong female character”, who could only be a main character to have a real impact and be significant.
That’s also why Sansa is whitewashed since the first season. They need her, because the other main female characters on the show don’t fit what they want in a woman, what the patriarchy wants women to be like, they don’t “conform to their gender” (like Arya, who they turned into a killer machine saying that most girls are stupid), they threaten the patriarchy and the status quo (like Daenerys, who’s definitely darker in the show even if we don’t talk about season 8), or they’re an antagonist (like Cersei).
Sansa is “traditionally feminine”, she doesn’t threaten the status quo, she doesn’t threaten the patriarchy, she’s not an antagonist, and she’s a “good victim” unlike Daenerys:
Without Littlefinger, and Ramsay and the rest, I would have stayed a Little Bird all my life.
(Sansa, 8x04)
Their strong female character needs badass moments. And show!Sansa stans will always remember when she was the one to save the day instead of Jon, when it was a woman instead of a man. She’s getting a leadership arc in season 6, because they put her in the North by changing her storyline in the books and giving her Jeyne’s. Because they love Sophie Turner in a creepy way, yes, but also because they needed her to go back North to give her a leadership arc.
When Sansa and Jon reunite, her efforts to convince him to take back Winterfell aren’t paying. Jon just died and came back to life, he’s done with the fighting, he’s just done in general. It’s only when Ramsay sends him a letter in that same episode that Sansa convinced him:
A monster has taken our home and our brother. We have to go back to Winterfell and save them both.
(Sansa, 6x04)
It’s Rickon. Rickon is still alive, Ramsay has him, and he’s their little brother. The rest of their family is dead, or presumed dead. Yes, Brienne saw Arya, but they have no idea if she’s still alive at that moment. No, right now the only family Jon has left is Sansa. He died, he came back, he doesn’t know why, the only thing he knows is that he doesn’t want to fight anymore. But Sansa came back, no matter that they didn’t get along at all when they last saw each other. And Rickon is still alive. He still has the two of them, Ramsay has the latter and is a threat to the first. That’s why he asks the help of the Free Folk, that’s why he tries to convince Northern Houses to fight with him.
I’ll skip the part where Sansa is absolutely unhelpful, gaslight both Davos and Lyanna Mormont, and think people will fight because she’s a Stark. Huh, no. They won’t, they didn’t. The ones who fought alongside Jon didn’t do it for her, and the Knight of the Vale didn’t do it for her either, but because she asked Littlefinger. They only did what he told them to do.
Back to trust and loyalty, she tells Brienne she trusts Jon:
Then why did you lie to him when he asked you how you learned about Riverrun?
(Brienne, 6x05)
It’s an interesting scene, because it ends here. Sansa doesn’t answer Brienne, so it’s up to the audience to guess the answer and people will have different opinions on what the reason is.
Before the battle, Sansa tells Jon they don’t have enough men (well, it’s not his fault that not enough Northern Houses will fight for you, Sansa), that he doesn’t know Ramsay like she does and will fall into his trap, that she needs to listen to him. And he does, actually:
All right, tell me. What should we do? How do we get Rickon back?
We'll never get him back.
(Jon & Sansa, 6x09)
She does know Ramsay. No, he won’t let Rickon live. But what was the reason that convinced Jon to fight Ramsay and take back Winterfell? Rickon. Rewind:
A monster has taken our home and our brother. We have to go back to Winterfell and save them both.
(Sansa, 6x04)
It was never about saving Rickon, and Sansa knew it. It was about taking back Winterfell, and revenge (no one can blame her for this, of course, I’d love to kill Ramsay Bolton). The fact is, at this point, the audience does wonder what Sansa is doing. Is she manipulating for her own gain? Does she not trust anyone anymore? We don’t know, and that’s not something the writers care about. What they care about is that Sansa is back North, they’ll take back Winterfell, and she’s having “badass” moments with some lines.
And when it does seem like Ramsay is going to win, who is surprised to see the Knights of the Vale coming to save the day? Not the audience. Now, this has be done many times, like in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. I absolutely love the Battle of Helm's Deep in this movie, and yes, the Uruk-hai seem to be winning. There doesn’t seem to be a chance for the men to win, even joined by Elves. But Gandalf arrives like he told Aragorn, and he brought Éomer and the Rohirrim cavalry. It’s a classic twist during a battle, and sometimes it works. The Battle of the Bastards is actually great to watch, but the issue is that, as mentioned by several people, Sansa who told Jon again and again that they didn’t have enough men didn’t tell him there were more men, didn’t tell him that she was gonna try to convince someone and not lose hope, and it’s being shot in a way that says: Sansa saved the day. Which, again, is exactly what the writers want it to look like, since they need their strong female character.
Did she? Save the day, I mean? Yes and no. Knowing more men would be here would have changed the battle plans. Men could have been saved. They could have used the Knight of the Vale either from the beginning, or when they decided to, as an element of surprise - either way, it should have been decided by the one leading the army. Why? Because that would have been smart, and that’s how a battle works. And for those who would think to argue this:
What should I do differently?
I don't know! I don't know anything about battles.
(Jon & Sansa, 6x09)
What does all of this mean, in conclusion? What can we say about Sansa and her actions? It depends, because the writing is just awful. Sansa being a good person who just doesn’t trust anyone anymore because of PTSD is all right. Sansa only trusting Jon is all right. Sansa becoming a player in the game of thrones who will put herself first and do anything to win is all right. But Sansa being a mix of all those different versions of Sansa doesn’t work, except for Sansa stans because what matters, again, is her having badass moments and getting a leadership arc, not good writing.

as I've been watching s6 of bcs I've noticed the music cues are resembling the music cues from brba. to me it seems that as the timelines converge, the music is getting more and more similar. this prompted me to do a deep dive into music transcription and analysis between the two shows, which I'll post as I complete them. (side note: @jmcgools sent me an interview with dave porter which confirmed my theory!!!! interview is linked here x)
a few general comments before going into the first cue analysis....doing a full stylistic analysis entails analyzing SHMRG (Sound, Harmony, Melody, Rhythm, Growth). I am focusing mainly on the melodic and rhythmic elements because dave porter stays fairly consistent in the sound, harmonic, and growth elements throughout both shows:
the sound/timbre used is typically guitars, various percussion, and other electronic sounds; the sound/texture is typically sparse, which fits dave's intention to keep the music subservient to the narrative.
the harmony is also sparse in both shows for the same reasons, and is either centered in a minor tonality or no tonality at all.
and with growth, dave masterfully follows the narrative, and so each cue is somewhat unique in that aspect.
the first comparison I've completed is between the credits from brba 4x02: thirty-eight snub x (the credits hit when jesse is dissociating in his house alone with his stereo music blasting behind him) and the scene in bcs 6x04: hit and run x is when kim confronts the people tailing her
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the music cue in the credits scene is short-lived, but has distinct melodic content that is recognizable in hit and run. the pattern starts with A, C, Db, C, then develops in measure 4-5 into A, C, Db, F, E. the developed melodic contour is repeated almost exactly in hit and run in measure 7-8. only the rhythm changes slightly
narratively, both scenes have an undercurrent of anxiety and dread. the minor 2nd motions between the C and Db and the F and E both accomplish that (think the jaws theme). the hit and run cue increases the intensity with the brief ostinato (repeating pattern in the bass line), continuing the minor 2nd motif between the C and Db. this minor 2nd motif is even further developed in the last 4 measures of the cue with the descending G, F#, F and then it ends with a tritone between A and Eb (one of the most unstable intervals) leaving the viewer unsettled.
These are both very short cues, but they have a lot packed into them! As with all of the music in brba and bcs, the creators use it sparingly, but when it is used it makes it that much more impactful.
This posted ended up being waaaaaay longer than I intended 😅 so thanks for reading this far! Let me know what you think or if you have any interpretations yourself. and feel free to drop suggestions for other cues for me to analyze! I’m hunting down cues to compare in my rewatches, but I know for sure that I won’t catch all of them lol

The Crowley Tour 6x04 "Weekend at Bobby's"
Humour ✔️ But I'm surly and I have a beard. Gimme
Sass ✔️ Saying yes to Bobby looking like Dr Phil
Intelligence ✔️ uses words most people wouldn't like cornpone
Not like other demons ✔️ reworking Hell
8 stars out of 10. I really do love this episode, because of the chemistry between Bobby and Crowley. But since this episode is about Bobby beating Crowley I can't give it any higher. I would have given it a 7 out of 10 but I gave it one extra star for giving us more of Crowley's backstory
