Theme Week– Guilds of Ravnica: Izzet League

Casting Time: 1 minute Range: The same galaxy Components: V, M (the focus of another caster) Duration: Instantaneous
You extend your senses to locate nearby magic-users. You can choose to exclude any number of creatures you can see from the search, or to limit your search to only magic-​users capable of casting spells of a certain spell level. You also choose whether to seek only humanoids or any creature with the Spellcasting feature.
The DM tells you whether the nearest magic-user the spell targets is friendly, indifferent, or hostile to you. You choose whether to select this magic-user or search for the next-closest caster, deferring your choice for up to four magic-users (if you refuse the fourth, the spell ends with no further effect). Once you have selected a magic-​user, you learn that creature’s name, race, preferred school of magic (if any), and current location in relation to you. You may then send the selected magic-user a telepathic message of up to 25 words, after which the spell ends.

Under the assumption that Sparrow Oak Garcia has a 9th level spell slot to burn on conjure animals, he could summon any one of the following: 8 giant spiders, 16 swarms of spiders, or 32 giant wolf spiders. I’m just imagining the unique position Sparrow Oak Garcia is in to completely ruin Nicky Foster/Close/Freeman/Swift/whatever other last name he collected when we weren’t even looking’s whole day

Hey fellow scientists!
If you are making a post on Tumblr that is aimed at general audiences, turn off the academic speak. Stop throwing fancy words into every sentence (we get it you're very smart!) if someone has to Google what a word means every other sentence, they are going to feel dumb and are less likely to take what you say to heart. Or, even worse, they will assume you are right without any critical thinking! We should all be open to valid criticism and questions!
Think about who you are trying to persuade. If it's other people in your specific field then by all means go ahead. But using words just to sound fancy without explaining them, will alienate general audiences or even other scientists outside your field.

Arcanatober Days 14 & 15– Lustrous Shell & Horrifying Pigments
So I missed a few days trying to recover from vaccination shots, but I’m back at it again with some more tarot-inspired content for the Halloween season. I’m pulling double duty each day until I get caught up, so today I’ve got two more– The Lovers and The Hanged Man, represented by Lustrous Shell and Horrifying Pigments, respectively
The first is a spell that wraps you in a beautiful, protective shell, but forces a steep cost for its casting and for when the shell finally breaks. The second acts as a cursed version of the classic marvelous pigments, creating living creatures instead of inanimate objects-- but ones imbued with a barely controlled, murderous rage. And maybe it’s better not to risk breaking the rules of the paints...

Powerfully imaginative minds can draw closer to other realms in their sleep, dreams pulling forth energy and possibly even active minds. When interacting with powerful magic, these otherworldly dreams can occasionally manifest fully, becoming the creatures known as animate dreams. Incomplete, imperfect beings, they feed upon the imagination and emotion of living beings, with sapient creatures providing far more nourishment than mere beasts.
As such, the animate dream can draw forth these powerful emotions for its food. Its touch causes mental anguish and horror that sustains it, but it gains even more sustenance by putting a creature into a state of horror. They prefer infecting creatures with nightmares, whether waking or sleeping, and even just by staying in close proximity to a sleeping creature they can prompt bad dreams. These proximity dreams are enough to keep it healthy, but are weaker than magically caused nightmares and so few animate dreams are satisfied with such feeding for long, nearly always escalating to more delicious terrors sparked by magic. Starvation doesn't kill animate dreams however, just causing ever increasing pain and distress that results in them becoming more aggressive and hostile.
While animate dreams can choose not to cause true harm in their feeding, few bother with such trouble. Creations of pure id and the erratic nature of dreams, they rarely feel proper sympathy or connection with the victims of their feeding, seeing them as nothing more than easily harvested thoughts. Perhaps the transient nature of dreams means they are never meant to take permanent form like this, and that paradox leads to the horrors an animate dream leaves behind.
While animate dreams are around the size of the average humanoid, their exact appearance is flexible and changes as they feed to take on a form similar to the fears and thoughts of the creature they're gaining sustenance from. The more an animate dream feeds off of a single creature, the more stable its form appears, but there's always some variation in what others see as their own emotions and fears influence how the animate dream appears to them.
