Theme Week– Guilds of Ravnica: Izzet League
Last weekend was my monthly theme week release over on Patreon, and it was up to my patrons to select their favorite guild from the city-plane of Ravnica! Last month’s winner was the Golgari Swarm, who I do love, but I’ll always have a special place in my heart for the megalomaniacal science-casters in the Izzet.
If you’d like to see the aforementioned release for the Golgari Swarm, catch up on the other Theme Weeks I’ve done in the past, or cast your own vote in my Weekly Polls, you can always sign up to support me on Patreon (for as little as $2/month)!

what would the cast's favorite mtg color combinations be?
Well, that's certainly a question.
I admit I haven't played MTG in years, but I do have an interest in the lore and philosophy, so I can try to offer my own personal takes on the color pie in an attempt to answer all this.
Here's the MTG Wiki page on the subject, but for simplicity's sake, you can think of it as:
WHITE: The Greater Good
BLUE: Love of knowledge
BLACK: 'Fuck you, got mine'
RED: insert Braveheart 'FREEDOOOOOOOOOM' meme here.
GREEN: Nature and stuff
I'm also gonna try to keep this with Ravnica's two color combo's, as opposed to like, three color Alara shard's or four color Nephalim identities. Mainly to save myself the headache of thinking of all the different ways the combos can go. To that end, some of these arguments may work better from an aesthetics of the Guilds, but I’ll try to make the arguments also work best with the color’s philosophies.
So, without further ado...
LUZ NOCEDA: IZZET (BLUE-RED)
Tumblr media
While the idea of Luz being assosciated with White due to her name and first spell are right there, and she does care about her friends, Luz's more defining characteristics I would argue are A) her nerdieness and love for learning, and B) her love of self expression. As such, a girl like her would fit right in with the guild most likely to make her explode.
Other Izzet members include Alador Blight, mainly for the mad scientist aesthetic, and potentially time skip Amity.
EDA CLAWTHORNE: GRUUL (RED-GREEN)
Tumblr media
Eda being Red is the most obvious thing in the world, but being Green I can see being debatable. However, I would argue that while Eda may not like any sort of 'natural order,' her use of Wild Magic and Palismen calls back to a less, for lack of a better term, restricted time. She rebels against the Coven system, and wants to use whatever magic she wishes, which is in keeping with the ideals of Green, which believes that one should live in harmony with nature, as opposed to controling it like with the Emperor's Coven system.
LILITH CLAWTHORNE: AZORIUS (WHITE-BLUE)
Tumblr media
Lilith is a surprisingly frustrating woman to come up with a proper color pairing for. On one hand, Blue is fairly obvious, given her own intelligence. On the other hand, the trick is figuring out her second color. She has a lot of elements of both Black and White. While tricky, I ended up siding more with the White-Blue Azorius, less because I feel Lilith matches them in terms of evil bureaucracy, and more because I feel the ending emphasizes how she attempts to share knowledge with the Bonesburough community through the Library. Though I do think Dimir colors work for Lilith pre-redemption.
WILLOW PARK: SELESNYA (GREEN-WHITE)
Tumblr media
This one's a fairly straightforward pick: Willow's love of nature and use of Plant Magic fits with Green, while her desire to protect her friends and put their needs above her own works well with White's desires to protect society at the expense of the individual.
THE ARCHIVISTS: DIMIR (BLACK-BLUE)
Tumblr media
So I’ve seen how the Dimir present themselves as… well, literal archivists to hide their true evils, so there’s point number one in my favor. But also, I feel the Archivists kinda work well in the Black-Blue color combo: Their selfishness in using a child to destroy an entire race, mixed with their roles as observers of the universe, a very Blue thing to be I feel. Admittedly The Collector themselves doesn’t really fit into the latter bit as much, but I do think the species as a whole works here.
Other Dimir members include pre-redemption Lilith, reasons mentioned in her section, and Gus, due to the Dimirs focus on illusions and powerful secrets (the Galderstones).
BELOS: ORZHOV (WHITE- BLACK)
Tumblr media
Do I even have to explain this one? Religious con artist in the guild built to represent just that? It’s too perfect.
Other Orzhov members include Odalia Blight and Tibbles, who both lost out due to their last of religious connections to strengthen the White theme.
HUNTER: BOROS (RED-WHITE)
Tumblr media
While this choice might feel like it only fits pre-redemption Hunter, I think Hunter could be seen as a consistently Boros flavored character, albeit in different ways. In season 2A-‘Hollow Mind,’ his commitment to the EC and his role as one of their top soldiers fits the aesthetic trappings of the Boros well. However, after his redemption, I think he better reflects both Red and White as color philosophies: his journey of self expression and self acceptance mixed with his commitment to protecting his friends fits well with this color pairing, even if he loses the aesthetic of the guild itself.
VINEY: SIMIC (GREEN-BLUE)
Tumblr media
A Simic role took a surprisingly long time to decide on, because aesthetically combining monsters or controlling evolution isn’t actually something I can think any TOH character does. But when I thought about color pie philosophies, I think Viney matches it to a tee. Her Beastkeeping Coven membership implies a Green respect for nature, while her love of knowledge, risking her own safety to learn multiple types of magic, clearly ties in with Blue’s love for knowledge.
Other potential Simic members may include Ed Blight, potentially? Vee would NOT BE Simic, mainly because she would probably be one of the things the Simic experimented on and that feels… wrong.
BOSCHA: GOLGARI (BLACK-GREEN)
Tumblr media
At first, I was planning to say something about how ‘Well, she’s like the opposite of Willow, but she’s also obsessed with Willow, so she has the opposite color of Willow.’ But in actuality, I think, aside from the lack of any necromatic aesthetics, Boscha fits the Black-Green idea’s well. Her obsessiveness, selfishness, and cruelty are certainly Black, but she also has a sort of ‘Strong eat the weak’ mentality with her bullying, which fits well with Green’s more villainous impulses, like with the Green Phyrexians of Mirrodin/New Phyrexia.
Post-Collectors game of tag Belos fits Golgari aesthetically, but still fits Orzhov better I think.
THE COLLECTOR: RAKDOS (RED-BLACK)
Tumblr media
Rakdos was a weird one to consider. I started thinking of the Bard Coven members, given Rakdos’s entertainment aspect, but neither Raine or Skara really fit the selfish and/or power hungry aspects. And then I tried to think of characters who might fit, but it was still tough to think of any who were both self expressive and selfish. That is, until I realized a fun little fact: Red-Black is the most childish of the color combos. Children are incredibly self expressive, incredibly free, and also incredibly selfish, often not understanding empathy because of their lack of experience. And honestly, the Collector fits that to a tee. Admittedly he’s less selfish and childish by the end, but he still has a long way to go, which is why he leaves the Isles in the first place.

Art Fight 2021: Rai
Tumblr media
Posting up some of my old art trades I missed. This one was from 2021.
I've long been a fan of the Magic the Gathering setting of Ravnica. So, when I found out that Alexie's OC Rai is a magitech engineer based on the Izzet guild of Ravnica, I knew I had to draw her! Plus, Izzet counts as steampunk, so I get to pay tribute to the other half of this year's Art Fight theme 🎨
Here is Rai working late at night in the lab, as her barn owl Barney plays with a spare part ^_^
(The character reference explicitly states that Rai has an extra finger on her left hand.)
I painted this for Art Fight 2021, an online OC art trade event that takes place through the month of July.

mtg lore rant
One of the things that I strongly disliked about Guilds of Ravnica/Ravnica Allegiance/War of the Spark was the idea that the Guilds were supposed to be some sort of functioning government with a separation of powers, which seemed new to me; not sure how this played out in the previous two Ravnica blocks. IMO the guilds were never previously portrayed as having run the city competently; various cards portrayed police brutality, economic inequality (and outright slavery), extremely volatile utilities, and plain old civic mismanagement.
I'm not sure why this kind of watering down of the setting was present; maybe it was so that we'd have more sympathy for the Ravnicans when Bolas invaded, or maybe it was to make the guilds friendlier so D&D players using the Guildmaster's Guide would actually want to be a part of one of the guilds.
That contrasts with another problem I had with that block; the idea that we were supposed to have any sympathy at all for the Gruul. Yeah, Ravnica is an awful place to live, but it also has a standard of living higher than most other planes; there's indoor plumbing, advanced medical knowledge, and at least some level of literacy. So why should anyone be okay with completely destroying that society to restore nature? The Gruul had no intention to keep any of the improvements that have actually helped the people they claim to care about; they just think things will magically be better after their giant boar kills everyone in the city.
IMO, in the end, Domri got what he deserved.

My Ravnica Limited Cube
I created a Cube for me and my friends to play limited with when we get together. Because it's limited, I built it with six packs for 8 players in mind, so it's 800 cards!
[Also, the packs contain 16 cards with 1 Rare / Mythic, 4 Uncommons, 10 Commons, and 1 Land]
I've been steadily tinkering with it, making it less shit. It'll never be perfect, but it's an excuse to play cards with my friends.
It's mainly based on Return to Ravnica with cards from the other Ravnica blocks, plus like 50 cards from other planes to fill in some spots.
It's my treasure. It represents the good times I have of my friends.

Revisiting Mechanics in Ravnica
Recently someone spoke about a mechanic that would have benefit from two sets instead of one, which led me thinking to how some mechanics could be reused and in particular I thought ‘what if on the next Return to Ravnica they didn’t make a new mechanic for each guild but instead gave them returning mechanics?’
So for each guild here’s what I would like to see come back. None from previous Ranvica sets though, too obvious, plus Convoke and Surveil already show this process can happen the other way around, I’m interested in seeing mechanics not native to Ravnica get used.
AZORIOUS - FORETELL I believe Foretell would suit White/Blue well and it is already the pairing that represents the mechanic most. Azorious often has an instant/sorcery mechanic, Foretell can do both and has a similar name to their first mechanic, Forecast. Runner-up for this slot, Shield Counters.
BOROS - RAID If there is any guild that wants to reward you for attacking it’s Boros, and I know we all can be a bit tired of Boros being the Attack Step color combination, but that’s just the trigger for the ability word, from there plenty of flexibility is available. It can go on sorceries and instants, just limiting them to combat or your turn for maximum value, and further expands the mechanic in White. Runner-up, Bushido.
SELESNYA - ALLIANCE Ravnica’s premiere token loving commune would excel with a mechanic like Alliance, a consistent reward for generating creatures and ways to get very explosive when mass-producing.
ORZHOV - EXPLOIT Undeniable flavor, and one may think mono-white cards could never have this mechanic but there is recent precedent on Angelic Purge, Reaper of Flight Moonsilver, Lunarch Mantle and Extricator of Sin. So for Orzhov I wager we could afford a little bend. A sacrifice mechanic is a perfect fit for Orzhov. Runners-Up, Evoke and Disturb.
IZZET - ENTWINE Simply must have an Instant/Sorcery mechanic for Izzet and I feel there is a lot of untapped potential in Entwine! What could be more Izzet than offering two spells in one, with the option to use both if you can afford it! Not as flashy as Overload but the effects you could use and design effects that interact with each other in interesting ways, I’d love to see Entwine expanded upon, it’s only ever been used on a single multi-color card! Interchangeable for this slot is Escalate, on cards with 2 modes these are almost identical mechanics.
SIMIC - MUTATE This was the mechanic that inspired this fun thought exercise! Mutate seems like a perfect fit for the Simic Combine, modifying creatures using other creatures is their whole schtick. Having a single guild handling the mechanic might make it difficult to hit the as-fan needed to make it usable in draft, but beyond that hurdle this feels like a slam dunk. Runner-up, Modified.
DIMIR - SPLICE Specifically, Splice Onto Instant Or Sorcery, allowing Dimir to repeat effects without having to jump through the hoops of hitting the opponent like Cipher, instead they just need a steady supply of cheap spells. I was debating on Splice being put here or Foretell since laying down face-down trap cards can feel very Dimir.
RAKDOS - MADNESS Harkening back to Hellbent I’d love to see Rakdos enjoy more self-discard and the reuse of Madness on Innistrad has me further encouraged. Reaping extra effects off discarding eventually leading to an empty hand feels perfect, and if we could make the discard symmetrical the downside of being empty handed isn’t so bad when everyone is top-decking.
GOLGARI - PERSIST Surely we all know Persist is better and more interesting than Undying? Obviously Undying is the stronger mechanic but it isn’t anywhere near as exciting to me. Runner-up for this slot was Morbid, and we could still use plenty of death triggers without the ability word itself marking it. 2nd Runner-up is Unearth, but we just got a load of Unearth in Brother’s War and I wanted to feature mechanics with less limelight.
GRUUL - EXERT I’m still shocked Exert has not been reused outside of Amonkhet! An exceptional cost/benefit mechanic and Hour of Devastation showed it can be used for tap abilities as well! I feel there is a lot more space for this very solid combat and creature mechanic. Runner-up, Channel.
