//21 years of fighting trying and living//
(Yesterday) I celebrated my 21 years of living with a transplant organ and after 3 whole years I can say.
I'm happy to be alive.
I'm happy to not have killed myself and yesterday it showed, today it shows- tomorrow each day it shows.
It's been a long fight not only those years but the entire run down.
I've been born with a genetic defect to my gallbladder- causing my liver to fail.
The doctors didn't even gave me 2 months and I still made it- I'm here in a bus.
Driving to work- as a 23 year old young adult.
It's weird and yet good- I made it.
So a toast to a set of 21 more years full of life.

"Lou was sick for the last couple of years, first from treatments of interferon, a vile but sometimes effective series of injections that treats hepatitis C and comes with lots of nasty side effects. Then he developed liver cancer, topped off with advancing diabetes. We got good at hospitals. He learned everything about the diseases, and treatments. He kept doing tai chi every day for two hours, plus photography, books, recordings, his radio show with Hal Willner and many other projects. He loved his friends, and called, texted, e-mailed when he couldn’t be with them. We tried to understand and apply things our teacher Mingyur Rinpoche said – especially hard ones like, 'You need to try to master the ability to feel sad without actually being sad.'
"Last spring, at the last minute, he received a liver transplant, which seemed to work perfectly, and he almost instantly regained his health and energy. Then that, too, began to fail, and there was no way out. But when the doctor said, 'That’s it. We have no more options,' the only part of that Lou heard was 'options' – he didn’t give up until the last half-hour of his life, when he suddenly accepted it – all at once and completely. We were at home – I’d gotten him out of the hospital a few days before – and even though he was extremely weak, he insisted on going out into the bright morning light.
"As meditators, we had prepared for this – how to move the energy up from the belly and into the heart and out through the head. I have never seen an expression as full of wonder as Lou’s as he died. His hands were doing the water-flowing 21-form of tai chi. His eyes were wide open. I was holding in my arms the person I loved the most in the world, and talking to him as he died. His heart stopped. He wasn’t afraid. I had gotten to walk with him to the end of the world. Life – so beautiful, painful and dazzling – does not get better than that. And death? I believe that the purpose of death is the release of love.
"At the moment, I have only the greatest happiness and I am so proud of the way he lived and died, of his incredible power and grace.
"I’m sure he will come to me in my dreams and will seem to be alive again. And I am suddenly standing here by myself stunned and grateful. How strange, exciting and miraculous that we can change each other so much, love each other so much through our words and music and our real lives.--Laurie Anderson on Lou Reed for Rolling Stone, November 6, 2013.
According to Will Hermes, in his biography "Lou Reed: The King of New York," Reed's final words to Laurie Anderson were “Take me into the light.”

𝐍𝐀𝐌𝐄:  Wei Ying - 魏婴 ( birth name )  /  Wei Wuxian - 魏无羡 ( courtesy name ) 𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐀𝐒:  Yilling Laozu ( Yilling Patriarch )  /  Poor Gege  /  yingying  /  a'ying 𝐀𝐆𝐄:  he was about 20-21 ish, when he died in his first life. However the body he is resurrected into is 20 exactly. So I would probably put him at about 30-33 years old. 𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑:  Male, He / Him  𝐁𝐈𝐑𝐓𝐇:  October 31st 𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍:  Bisexual / Demiromantic
𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘: Wei Wuxian is an energetic, and mischievous character. Caring very little for any rules set in place, nor careful behavior, and saving face. He enjoys teasing people, young and old, and flirts shamelessly with girls he finds pretty( even if he never means it ). He’s also extremely intelligent, creative, adept in many skills and arts. During his time in the Burial mounds, he not only created an entirely new form of cultivation--- but invented a lot of very useful cultivator tools.
Carefree as he may be; Wei Wuxian is extremely loyal, and cares a great deal for the people he loves. Going so far as to risk his own life to protect them. A prime example being the time he underwent a 3 day long surgery to transplant his core, so his brother’s could be replaced. Staying awake through the entire process, for two nights and a day.
Despite everything, it is clear Wei Wuxian does have regrets from his first life.
𝐀𝐁𝐈𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐒 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐒𝐊𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐒:  under cut because phew this is long.
𝐒𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐃𝐒𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐏:  Wei Wuxian is very good with a sword, noted for his speed and agility. In MDZS canon, he is quite the opponent when he still has his core. But without it, he is only good with a weapon in short bursts. 𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐘:  Also very good with a bow, Wei Wuxian placed first out of the four top cultivators to place in a contest. As a challenge, and an act of defiance towards the wens. He shot each and every target dead center, while blindfolded. 𝐂𝐔𝐋𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍:  In life, he was considered one of the greatest cultivators of his age group. With a powerful core, intelligence, strength, and a wealth of knowledge. Before losing his core, for the sake of his brother’s well being, he had very few equals. 𝐓𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐒𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐒:  Wei Wuxian is considered a genius when it comes to talismans. Capable of crafting them quickly and efficiently, to do what he wishes. He's even invented a handful himself, for self defense, offense and attack, or general uses like heating up water.  𝐃𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐍𝐈𝐂 𝐂𝐔𝐋𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍:  As far as canon is concerned, Wei Wuxian is the inventor of demonic cultivation.( Though I like to believe he merely popularized, and refined it. )The practice of using resentful energy instead of spiritual energy, despite the dangers of backfiring. His demonic cultivation raised him up much higher than the rest of his peers in terms of power. Though the resentment was eating away at his life force, and driving him closer to qi deviation. A great deal of demonic cultivation utilized spirits, demons, and corpses as weapons and allies. Manipulating them via commands; words, whistles, claps, and music, to do as wei wuxian wished. 𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐍𝐐𝐈𝐍𝐆:  The black flute was crafted with his demonic cultivation in mind. When played, it allows him a much more refined control of resentment. Though it can be used to play helpful music too, he mostly uses it to allow more control of his demonic cultivation. 𝐒𝐔𝐈𝐁𝐈𝐀𝐍:  This is Wei Wuxian's sword. After Wei Wuxian's death, Suibian seals itself so that no one but Wei Wuxian can draw its blade. Despite reclaiming his sword much later in the book, and after his resurrection-- his new core is much too weak to use it.

Brittany Valim - phaware® interview 458
Brittany Valim shares her experience with pulmonary hypertension and her journey towards a heart and double lung transplant. She now lives a fulfilling life as a mother, student, and aspiring nurse. Brittany encourages others to embrace life and ride the wave, appreciating the rarity of their experiences.
Hello, my name is Brittany Valim. I am 34 years old, and I was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension in 2010. In 2009, I decided to go on a big hike, they're called the Punch Bowls in Santa Paula, California. I noticed walking up to the trail, which is a really steep hill, I started getting out of breath. I thought it was just because I just had a baby two years ago and I'm overweight. We kept going on this trail. The more and more I kept going, the more and more I started losing breath. I was holding onto tree branches to climb up these hills. Finally, when I got down from the hike, five hours later, I decided that I was going to relax and just figured my body was just not ready for that. I decided that I was going to go to the doctors. I was wrongly diagnosed for a year with high blood pressure. I was rushed to the ER after many other ER visits and I was told I had pulmonary hypertension. They sent me home to go see another doctor who disagreed with the emergency room doctors. A month later, I was rushed to the ER again, and that's when I was kept in ICU and was told that my heart was so bad that I could have possibly died. When I was in the ICU, they were trying many different IV medications. I remember them trying one of them. I remember getting so sick that we could not do it. I think I was in the ICU for about two to three weeks. My hardest thing was not, “Oh my goodness, this disease I have,” it was more, “My son is at home, and I cannot see him,” because the swine flu was pretty big at that time, so no visitors could really come in. There were people passing away all around me, so that was freaking me out and giving me anxiety. Then, at the end of my stay, we finally figured that Letairis and sildenafil would be my treatment from then on out. I have idiopathic pulmonary hypertension. They have no idea how I got it. I believe that it was from my son. I can't quote that, no doctor has said that's what it's from. But when I look at pictures from after me being pregnant until I was sick, my neck was pretty swollen and so was my face. I just took that as maybe my heart had a lot of fluid around it, and no one really saw it before then. I was 21 years old, and I wanted to do what every other 21-year-old wanted to do, and that was going dancing and hanging out with friends. So, those first years, actually, for a long time, I struggled with having this diagnosis because I was in my 20s, and I just wanted to hide everything under the rug, so I acted like everything was fine. I went out and probably did way too much more on my body than I should have, but I was still taking medication. In 2018, I got sent to the ICU again. We used to tell my son that it's just, "Mom needs a tune-up. Mom needs a tune-up." I was put in there, and my doctor and my nurse at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital sat me down and told me, "Hey, look, we need to try something new." They came up with the IV meds, the sub-q and Tyvaso at the time. I was in my late twenties now, and I said, "Oh, I want Tyvaso." I was going to beauty school, so I didn't want a pump. The thought of having something attached to me all the time just was not for me. I did good on Tyvaso, but I hated taking it. After I started Tyvaso, I was able to go to the gym. I was able to kayak with my family at that time, but I was just not compliant with taking it. It was just too bulky. I had to put it in a bag and everybody always stared at me when I was taking it. I was over it. I decided to tell my doctor that I did not want to do it anymore, and I was no longer compliant with it. He suggested that I do sub-q or IV. I had a serious talk with my nurse, at that time, at Santa Barbara who is amazing, she's my saving grace. She told me that sub-q would be really hard, and that's when I decided I want the intravenous line. From then on out I was taking it and it was making me very sick for a long time. I finally realized that, hey, I need to change my life and what I'm doing. When I got sent home on oxygen that same time, the pump isn't what scared me so much, it was the oxygen that got me shook. That's what caused me to say, this is the real deal now, this could be your life forever being on oxygen and that's when I decided to change my partying habits, my cooking habits, my exercising habits. I was ready to change. IV meds, did save my life for a while. For about five or six years, I was on IV meds, and in 2018 when I moved to San Jose, California from where I had been before, I started noticing that I was just not breathing well. I couldn't work as much. I was getting sick more often. We started talking about the transplant list. So in February, in 2020 is when I officially got put on the transplant list. I had to have my mom come in and help me live, because there's times I couldn't even get out of bed I was so weak. I needed help with my son. Just house cleaning, I have two dogs. But it still didn't hit that, “Oh my goodness, I'm one day going to be on a table and I'm going to get lungs and a heart.” It didn't really hit me yet. When I was first diagnosed with PH, I was really alone. I didn't know that there was these groups online. Every time I went to a support group, they were all older than me. Everybody was older. I just didn't feel connected to anybody, so I felt like very alone. My mom, we were fighting a lot, because she would tell me things that I shouldn't be doing. I was telling her, I'm a grown woman, I know what's right for me. I know when to take a break. It was just really hard at first and towards the end, that's when I finally felt support from my friends, family. Then, I started becoming closer to people on Facebook. Then I started reaching out to people on Instagram. Then, I backed away for a little bit because I was starting to face the realities. I was going through so many things. I thought I was having a heart attack at times when it was just anxiety. I had a lot of support, especially from family. I had family and friends were more supportive than I've ever thought. I had so many cheerleaders of people who I had been friends with for years on Facebook and Instagram. They were just cheering me on every day. That's when I started showing my stages of this is me today, this is how I feel. One weekend, I was with my family, it was my best friend who is my cousin, it was her baby shower. That following Monday I got a call saying, "Brittany, we noticed some of your symptoms and some of your testing, we would like you to come into the hospital. We just want to check you out." I said, "Okay." I went in. They did more testing. They let me go home. I got a call on a Wednesday and they said, "Hey, I want you to enjoy your weekend with your family, but on Monday, I think it's time to put you on ECMO if we don't get a call before then." That following Friday morning, I got woken up by my boyfriend and he's telling me, "Brittany, they're calling you. They're calling you." I said, "Why are you lying to me? Why are you lying to me? Why would you even say something like that?" He said, "No, I'm serious." Because for some reason I turned my ringer off. My mom came running in my room and she's like, "No, Brittany, you need to call them back." I called them back and then that was the reality of me getting a heart and lung transplant. This was at five o'clock in the morning is when I called them back. They told me that I needed to be at the hospital by eight o'clock. Well, when I got the call, I sat there in awe for a second, because my son was still sleeping, and that was the hardest thing for me to do was leave my son. I wanted to wake him up. Well, I tried to, I don't know if anybody's ever tried to wake up a 13-year-old. They refuse to wake up. I tried and he was just kind of like, "Okay, okay, bye." Of course, being a mom and my son is my rock, that was really hard. I decided I wanted to take a shower, because I wanted to be clean. That's when we started packing my bags. But my mom said if there is anything else I needed that she would definitely pack a bag for me. To get to the hospital, it was about 40 minutes. Since it was during COVID, only one person can take me up to the room. My mom chose my boyfriend to do that. I was sad about that, but I was really happy, because me and my mom were very close and I know she was stressing out. So if we had been together, I feel like I would've gone into the OR with all of this anxiety, because I knew that my mom was hurting. I wasn't even thinking of me. I was just thinking about how sad my mom, but happy she was and so scared was. I couldn't even think about how scared I was. When they were ready for me, they allowed my boyfriend to wheel me down in a wheelchair to the OR. I remember talking to all the nurses. My stomach was just in my throat. They were asking me what type of music I wanted. I told them I don't even care what kind of music there was. I remember joking with the nurse, sitting on the table staring at this white ceiling with the big hood light. I remember telling her, "Has anybody ever told you no, nevermind. I need to go." She was like, "No, nobody has." I said, "Well, I might just be your first one to want to leave the OR." We kind of laughed about it and she gave me encouraging words. As soon as that phone rang, I heard one of the nurses in the OR say, "Okay, it's time to go." They told me to count backwards, and I don't even think I remember counting. It was a 12 hour surgery. I got out. I think it was three hours out of the surgery I started bleeding into my lungs and they had to take me back to the OR. They told my mom that it is pretty common for that to happen. After that, everything was pretty well except for waking up and realizing you cannot see. That was the hard part. I had TED's disease, so I woke up with very, very blurred vision. I couldn't see who my nurses were. I couldn't see who my doctors were. I couldn't see where my mom was. I couldn't see anything. My eyes were just so blurry I could not see. In the end, we think that it happened to be with so much trauma on your body that it caused me to have retinal detachment in both eyes. Within these three years, because my transplant was in 2020. My right eye is pretty good. I still can't see very well through my left eye. I think that's just damaged for good. My life has been forever changed. I did have a bump in the road, of course, diabetes. Diabetes comes with the territory of transplant, but mine has stayed with me. I got put in the hospital, I believe it was six months after transplant. I was just not feeling good. I was throwing up and I finally called my team because my mom, of course, made me, and my boyfriend was like, "Yeah, you do need to call the doctors." I did. I went into the ER and my blood sugar was at 650, my glucose. After that, I started realizing, okay, I definitely need to eat a lot better, which I was pretty much doing anyways because you're on so many restrictions out of transplant. You have slow emptying of your stomach. You have all of this stuff, so you can't eat fiber. Your potassium might be too high. So you're trying to figure all this out. I remember being on a high dose of steroids. I actually yelled at my mom, in one of the grocery stores, because I didn't know what to eat anymore. I just told her I wanted a starve and not eat anymore. But diabetes was my only bump in the road. I consider myself very lucky. I am the mom that I've wanted to be. I wish I can go back and be this mom back then with PH, but it was obviously hard. I am going to school now. I am a full-time nanny and I take ballet. I've been a dancer for a very long time. I did it in high school. I just always loved to dance, and I finally took myself to the JC here, and I decided to do ballet for fun. If I could give advice to someone in their twenties or just anybody in general or to my 21-year-old self, I would say ask for help. Find other people who are like you, or people going through the same thing as you, because they really do know what you're going through, emotionally, physically, they do. I know everybody's tolerance level for pain and emotions are always different, but you need someone to talk to. It's really hard to do this alone. I tried it and it wasn't the greatest. With a PH diagnosis, I didn't really live day-to-day. I didn't think of myself as passing away. I never thought about that, because I don't know if it has to do with me being a mom or not, but I just could not fathom not being here. I would fight to stay here just for my son. After having the diagnosis, I still have a great outlook on life. I ride the wave, definitely ride the wave. I now go to school and I'm going to school to be a nurse, and while I'm waiting for the nursing program, I would love to get into med school. I plan to be an endocrinologist. I've never been able to think about school, it was always, "Am I going to have enough money? How am I going to work? Can I work? Am I too sick to work?" Now I don't have that anymore. I don't have that, am I too sick? I don't feel sick anymore. My nurses, I have to thank. There's one in particular, and if she listens to this, she knows who she is. She was not just a nurse, but she did above and beyond. I'm sure there's nurses that are great out there, but she still my cheerleader today. My name is Brittany Scarlet Valim, and I am aware that I am rare.

6 months and many breakdowns later... surgery is rescheduled
TL;DR: Surgery is now scheduled for Wednesday, February 21, 2024. James will have pre-op the day before. We'll keep updating here as we can!
The longer version...
Almost everything from the last post in August is still valid. It's still the third and final surgery for his "full repair" (called the "Fontan"). It's still not an "emergency" (although it does need to happen). And it's still happening at UVA hospital in Charlottesville (and we still live in Richmond, an hour away).
The biggest change is that James turned 4 in October! Also after having conversations with his cardiologist, the initial 2-4 week hospital recovery we were told to anticipate may be a little inflated. James is an all-star little patient and has recovered more quickly than average during his past two surgeries, so we're anticipating hospital recovery to be more around a week (or two, but you can never really know these things).
For a little background over the past several months, there have been many twists and turns since August. The August date was canceled due to low ICU staffing at the hospital. We planned again for October. We kept the boys out of daycare to prevent us from getting sick. We all got sick. We delayed surgery week by week as we continued to be sick. Then we decided to take a break from the madness as we entered into cold and flu season, and we would wait and try again in the spring.
It's not quite spring, but we're back at it again. We're anxious to have this surgery behind us, and we're hopeful James will feel relief for ailments he doesn't even realize he has (his oxygen saturation levels are in the low 80s currently, after surgery they'll be in the high 90s).
We took the boys out of daycare again and have been quarantining as much as possible in preparation for the surgery. It's important for James to not have an upper respiratory illness for the surgery and immediate recovery because his lungs need to be in tip top shape (something we didn't *fully* realize until our second attempt at the surgery in the fall).
The logistics, the considerations, the emotions, the stress — it's all a lot. We just keep telling ourselves and each other we're doing the best we can.
Here's what the next few days will look like:
We plan to tell James about the surgery today or tomorrow (the fun news is we also get to tell James he was accepted for Make A Wish, so he can choose something to look forward to after the surgery!).
Tuesday 2/20 we go to UVA for pre-op mid-morning to mid-afternoon (vitals, echo, blood draw, ultrasound, etc.), then we come home.
Wednesday 2/21 is surgery day, so Michael and I will take James SUPER EARLY to UVA. Surgery will be 6-8 hours (for those who this means anything to, it's a "beating heart" operation and he'll be on the pump for ~1-1.5 hrs). Michael and I have been in touch with the hospital about getting a room at the Ronald McDonald house — chances are it's full, and if it is, the hospital will provide a room at a hotel for us for 3 nights. Michael and I will be taking turns staying overnight with James at the hospital (they only let 1 adult overnight).
In the days that follow, someone will be with him around the clock (it's different having a newborn or 5 month old compared to a 4 year old!). He'll probably be in the ICU for a couple nights then go to the pediatric floor for the remaining days.
Another thing to note is that there are two heart transplant candidates that could move our surgery to Thursday or Friday, but the odds are still good that James's surgery will happen within the week. As long as we get through pre-op, surgery will definitely be within the week.
People have been asking how to support us, and most simply you can cheer us on however you prefer — thoughts, prayers, letters, song, dance, poem, etc. Some people have asked about meals, and we don’t have a meal train currently, but if you’d like to send an Uber Eats or Door Dash gift card or Venmo us (@ninarogers or @mikerogue) for a coffee, a meal or to just help with the extra costs that can come with traveling to and from the hospital and being out of our normal routine — that would be appreciated. Hopefully this will just be a short stint and not too disruptive for too long.
Last but not least, here are some cute pictures from the past few months 🥰 James is still our sweet, funny, sassy, spirited and curious little red head, and we love him so!

Northeast floods devastate ‘heartbroken’ farmers (AP) Well before it was warm enough to plant seedlings in the ground, farmer Micah Barritt began nursing crops like watermelon, eggplant and tomatoes—eventually transplanting them from his greenhouse into rich Vermont soil, hoping for a bountiful fall harvest. Within a few hours last week, those hopes were washed away when flood waters inundated the small farm, destroying a harvest with a value he estimated at $250,000. “The loss of the crops is a very tangible way to measure the flood, but the loss of the work is hard to measure,” said Barritt, one of five co-owners of Diggers’ Mirth Collective Farm in Burlington, Vermont. “We’re all grieving and heartbroken because of this.” That heartbreak was felt by farmers in several Northeast states after floods dealt a devastating blow at the worst possible time, when many plants were too early to harvest, but are now too late to replant in the region’s abbreviated growing season. Officials have called last week’s flooding Vermont’s worst natural disaster since floods in 1927.
The Most Essential Worker in a Heat Wave? The A.C. Guy (NYT) José Guerrero’s phone buzzes from morning to midnight with sweaty pleas for help: The air-conditioner fan just quit. My grandma is stuck in a 90-degree house. My children are overheating. Please come, it’s so hot. As Phoenix slogs through a record 21 straight days of 110-degree or higher temperatures, Mr. Guerrero, 33, has emerged as maybe the most essential worker in a town desperate to stay cool: the A.C. repair guy. Air-conditioner service companies around the Southwest are seeing voracious demand—a result of record-breaking temperatures searing the country from Florida to California, compounded by a shortage of skilled technicians and equipment. So now, Mr. Guerrero, his two brothers and their father roll out seven days a week, heading for suffocating attics and tar-shingled rooftops to coax ailing air-conditioners back to life. They fix leaking refrigerant lines, replace burned-out capacitors and try to lower Phoenix’s temperature a few degrees. But keeping the city cool is sweltering work. They endure the heat by guzzling water and wrapping wet cloths around their necks, and try to avoid burning their hands on scalding sheet metal or fainting inside crawl spaces where they say temperatures can soar to 150 degrees.
As a child, she sold street tamales; a senator now, she’s shaking up Mexico’s presidential race. (AP) A street-food salesgirl who became a tech entrepreneur and senator is shaking up the contest to succeed Mexico’s popular president and offering many voters the first real alternative to her country’s dominant party. Xóchitl Gálvez, 60, helped her family as a girl by selling tamales on the street. Today the straight-talking opposition senator is a long shot against Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s Morena party, which holds Congress and 22 of Mexico’s 32 states. Despite her slim chances, Gálvez seems to have shaken the president so badly that he’s been insulting her almost daily during his morning briefings. A political independent who initially set her sights on competing to be Mexico City mayor and often travels the sprawling capital on a bicycle, Gálvez entered the Senate chamber in December dressed as a dinosaur, an allusion to party leaders known for their archaic, unmovable practices. Mexican society is looking for someone new to believe in, Gálvez told The Associated Press.
Homicides in Brazil at the lowest level in over a decade, report says (AP) Brazilian researchers say the number of violent deaths last year reached the lowest level in more than a decade, puzzling some experts because there has been an explosion of firearms circulating in the country in recent years. About 47,500 people were slain in Latin America’s largest nation in 2022, said a report Thursday by the Brazilian Forum on Public Safety, an independent group that tracks crimes. While the number of killings in 2022 was down 2.4% from the previous year, it remained roughly even with levels recorded since 2019. The last time Brazil had less violent deaths was in 2011, with 47,215 killings.
Europe embraces the siesta to deal with the heat wave (NYT) A decade ago, in the wake of a financial crisis, Spain’s sacred siesta seemed to be under serious threat. Criticism was mounting across Europe that Spain’s sluggish economy resulted, in part, from its long midday break. Worried about being stereotyped as a sleepy, lazy country, Spain pledged to abolish the siesta to increase productivity. The siesta lived on, though rumors of its demise circulated. And now, as Europe has been gripped by more frequent and longer heat waves, other countries have come to see the wisdom of the siesta, including Germany, where a strong work ethic is valued sometimes to the point of mockery. German newspapers were among those sneering at the siesta during the economic crisis. But this summer, some German officials and work experts are extolling the virtues of a midday break. “Siesta during the heat is certainly not a bad suggestion,” said Karl Lauterbach, Germany’s health minister, reacting to calls this week from top German public health officials to imitate Spain, where many cities still see shops close and streets empty between 2 and 4 p.m. The heat—temperatures in Germany were around 90 degrees Fahrenheit this week—is forcing people to rethink their way of life and look to southern countries as examples of how to adapt to rising temperatures. Several research papers have found that napping improves productivity. The benefit of siesta has also been recognized for people’s health. Researchers at the University College of London showed in a study published last month that regular napping may help protect the brain’s health as it ages.
Wildfires in Greece burn for fifth day as another heatwave hits (Reuters) Greece struggled to contain a wildfire west of Athens that burnt forestland for a fifth day on Friday as another heatwave hit the country. Firefighters, backed by air water bombers and reinforcements from Cyprus, France, Israel and Italy, attempted to control the fire that broke out in the wider Athens area on Monday, gutting houses and forcing evacuations. More than 100 houses and businesses have been severely damaged from this wildfire and another near Athens that authorities put out earlier in the week.
Ukraine begins firing U.S.-provided cluster munitions at Russian forces (Washington Post) Ukraine has begun firing U.S.-provided cluster munitions against Russian forces in southeastern Ukraine in a push to break up well-fortified Russian positions that have slowed Ukraine’s summer offensive, according to Ukrainian officials familiar with the matter. The use of the controversial U.S.-made weapons, which has not been previously reported, follows President Biden’s “difficult decision” to order the delivery of the widely banned munitions last week, a move that human rights groups, European allies and some Democrats criticized due to the risk of civilian casualties. Russian President Vladimir Putin, referring to cluster munitions on Sunday, threatened to retaliate against Ukraine “if they are used against us,” although Russia has already used cluster munitions in populated areas of Ukraine at least 24 times since the start of Moscow’s invasion on Feb. 24, 2022, according to the United Nations. Cluster bombs, outlawed in more than 120 countries, explode in the air over a target, releasing dozens to hundreds of smaller bomblets across an area potentially as big as several football fields. Children are particularly vulnerable, as the submunitions can fail to explode until they’re picked up, potentially years after a conflict has ended.
Rich lode of EV metals could boost Taliban and its new Chinese partners (Washington Post) Sayed Wali Sajid spent years fighting American soldiers in the barren hills and fertile fields of the Pech River Valley, one of the deadliest theaters of the 20-year insurgency. But nothing confounded the Taliban commander, he said, like the new wave of foreigners who began showing up, one after another, in late 2021. “The Chinese were unbelievable,” Sajid said, chuckling at the memory. “At first, they didn’t tell us what they wanted. But then I saw the excitement in their eyes and their eagerness, and that’s when I understood the word ‘lithium.’” A decade earlier, the U.S. Defense Department, guided by the surveys of American government geologists, concluded that the vast wealth of lithium and other minerals buried in Afghanistan might be worth $1 trillion, more than enough to prop up the country’s fragile government. In a 2010 memo, the Pentagon’s Task Force for Business and Stability Operations dubbed the country the “Saudi Arabia of lithium.” A year later, the U.S. Geological Survey published a map showing the location of major deposits and highlighted the magnitude of the underground wealth, saying Afghanistan “could be considered as the world’s recognized future principal source of lithium.” Now, in a great twist of modern Afghan history, it is the Taliban—which overthrew the U.S.-backed government two years ago—that is finally looking to exploit those vast lithium reserves. And with the United States absent from Afghanistan, it is Chinese companies that are now aggressively positioning themselves to reap a windfall from lithium here.
Cambodian leader’s son, a West Point grad, set to take reins of power—but will he bring change? (AP) Hun Sen has been Cambodia’s autocratic prime minister for nearly four decades, during which the opposition has been stifled and the country has grown increasingly close to China. With his Cambodian People’s Party virtually guaranteed another landslide victory in this Sunday’s election, it’s hard to imagine dramatic change on the horizon. But the 70-year-old former communist Khmer Rouge fighter and Asia’s longest-serving leader says he is ready to hand the premiership to his oldest son, Hun Manet, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point who heads the country’s army. Hun Manet’s education includes bachelor’s at West Point being followed by a master’s at New York University and a doctorate in economics from Britain’s Bristol University. His background has given rise to hope from some in the West that he might bring political change, but it will still take work to regain influence in the Southeast Asian country of 16.5 million, given China’s strategic and economic importance.
Travis King disappeared into a North Korea more isolated than ever (Reuters) When U.S. soldier Travis King sprinted across the border into North Korea from the South this week, he disappeared into a North Korea where lingering COVID-19 concerns and restrictions have made the already secretive country more isolated than ever. During the pandemic North Korea stopped all international travel and most trade, built a lengthy border wall, and even shot some would-be unauthorised border crossers early in the outbreak. Its trade has slowly resumed and mask mandates appear to have been dropped, but analysts say Pyongyang is still keenly nervous about border crossings, authorised or not. King ran over the border on Tuesday and U.S. officials say they have yet to ascertain his fate. “North Koreans don’t want to interact with the outside world,” said Andrei Lankov, director of the Seoul-based Korea Risk Group, noting the only known case of foreigners being allowed into the country in the last three years was a new Chinese ambassador and other diplomats in March, after lengthy negotiations.
Heat Affects Older People More. Here’s How to Stay Safe. (NYT) Extreme heat can be deadly for anyone, but older adults are uniquely vulnerable. In the heat wave that suffocated Europe in the summer of 2022, people age 65 and older accounted for approximately 90 percent of heat-related deaths. Experts say that three factors combine to increase older adults’ risk: biological changes that occur naturally with age, higher rates of age-related chronic diseases and greater use of medications that can alter the body’s response to heat. As people age, they also stop feeling as thirsty and so they tend to drink less. In hot conditions, that can cause them to become dehydrated faster. People often think that heat needs to be extreme (say, over 100 degrees) to cause illness, but in older adults, signs of heat exhaustion can emerge when temperatures are as low as 80 degrees. Physical exertion increases a person’s risk for heat illness because the body starts to generate even more heat. On hot days, older adults and people with serious health conditions should limit outdoor activities like walking and gardening to the cooler mornings and evenings, take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water. Listen to your body, too: If the activity starts to feel harder than normal, that’s a signal to stop and find a place to cool down. Signs of dehydration or heat exhaustion include dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, a racing heart or feeling lethargic.

In 2017, around 500,000 patients visited India for their treatment and since then the number has been rising which makes India the third-largest country preferred by patients for their treatment. The following are some reasons that make India one of the best countries for the treatment for foreign nationals:
The biggest advantage for India becoming a popular medical tourism spot is the low-cost health care service.
In contrast to first-world countries like the US and UK, medical care in India will cost 60-90% lower and that makes it a great option to opt for medical treatment in India.
A person coming to India for medical treatment can save 30 to 70 percent including the cost of ticket expenses & accommodation.
A large percentage of doctors who are specialized in countries like Germany, the UK, Australia, and the States, is bringing quality standards from the Western world to India.
The foreign exchange rates also are low or modest. The rupee has been growing weak and this is beneficial for medical tourism to grow in our country.

India’s hospitals have earned a reputation as world-class institutions with state-of-the-art technology. State-of-the-art technologies are available to treat even the most difficult medical cases such as organ transplants, cardiovascular surgery, eye surgery, etc. Indian hospitals are equipped with high technologies such as Gamma Knife, Cyberknife, IMRT, brain suite, Novelix TX, PET Scan, IGRT, etc.
Indian doctors are considered to be among the best in the world and their high level of surgical expertise is because of many years of training.
India offers world-class hospitals and highly trained professional staff, who are mostly trained in medically advanced countries.
Technology has also connected us globally and we are instantly aware of new inventions and discoveries in the medical world.
The government has removed visa restrictions on tourist visas that required a two-month gap between consecutive visits for people from Gulf countries which will boost medical tourism. However, for some selected countries, a 30-day medical visa could be issued for treatment by the Indian Embassy. The length of stay in India for patients with a medical visa is 6 months.

The Caretaker {Frankie Morales x GN!Reader}
Tumblr media
Rating: Mature
Warnings: None
Writer Wednesday 10/6/21 @autumnleaves1991-blog & @clydesducktape
Tumblr media
It had been years since the old cemetery in town had been seen too. The old caretaker had died and even though there was an ad that was placed in the newspaper every week, no one wanted the job.
It makes you sad, see the way that time and negligence can affect the final resting place of so many in the community. Grass growing around them without check until someone decides to do a quick mow of the tree. Lopsided headstones wear the ground has shifted or even worse, teenagers vandalizing the granite pieces. Slowly moss builds up and people lay forgotten.
Some were born here, raised here. Got married and started their own families, only to die here. Some were transplanted here, coming from other walks of life before they started to make their way into your town’s history. Some were brought home from war, flag draped coffins and devastated widows trying to remain stoic while twenty one gun salutes were fired off into the air.
Fall tends to make you reflect on life, think about death. It might have something to do with the leaves changing colors, dying and falling off the large tress that litter the cemetery with it’s their shedding. Some call it spooky and chuckle about the perfect atmosphere for a horror movie, you just find it comforting and the tiniest bit sad.
There has been someone that talks about cleaning headstones that you watch, fascinated by the videos of bringing the old moss covered stones back to some of their former glory, respecting those that have gone before and preserving it for the future generation to walk among their tombstones and be able to read their names on the epitaph.
You buy materials, brushes big and small, scrappers and a sprayer. Two sprayers actually. One with the D/2 cleaning solution and one with just water. If no one else will take care of the stones of generations past, you will.
The fall air is crisp, especially in the mornings and you are grateful for the idea of stopping for a coffee before you make your way to the cemetery. You hum as you pull through the gates. The newer sections of the graveyard were not nearly as bad off, so you make your way on the slightly meandering path to the back, the area that is most neglected and overgrown.
Parking you pull your supplies out and start to trudge to the back corner of the plot, the old brick wall crumbling in places but still kept the outline of the space and deterred some of the youth from venturing into the sacred space.
You wouldn’t say that the ground is hallowed, it’s not been blessed by any church. More that it’s filled with the spirits of those that have come before. Kneeling down at the first mossy covered grave, you rest your hand on the top of the stone and smile. You can’t even read the name on the stone it’s so overgrown with moss and there is even a small dandelion growing out of the crack a the top. You will bring it back to life though.
The plan is to start in the back and work your way forward, sections at a time and give the people who’s memories were slowly forgotten or only remembered by family history another moment where someone said their name aloud. Remembered them.
Taking out your scrapper, you kneel down and pull away some of the debris that has fallen down in front of the stone. “What are you doing?”
It’s embarrassing how loudly you yelp. Jumping and turning with the scrapper raised since it the only weapon you have. Heart thumping and you find a man standing in front of you with his own tools, a rake and bush axe that makes your eyes widen as you nearly fall back on your ass.
“I- I-”
“Are you destroying the headstones?” He growls, brows lowered and pinched together and a scowl on his face that makes you quickly shake your head.
“N-No!” You dart to your feet and take a step back and the man relaxes when he gets a look at you and sees that the thing in your hand is a plastic scrapper and not whatever weapon he might had taken it for. “I’m cleaning them!”
That makes him pause, he shifts slightly, looking from you to the sprayers behind you and then to the stone. “Cleaning them.” It’s a cautions wording, like he’s imagining the work and trying to see if your set up is plausible.
“I’m sorry.” That was the last thing that you expected from the man, thinking you would be ordered to get out of here by him. He wasn’t old, mid-forties you would say. Dressed in jeans and t-shirt with a flannel thrown over the top and a ball cap that has seen better days on his head. Standard Heating Oil is what the logo reads but you don’t remember seeing a company like that in town. “I wasn’t expecting anyone back here.”
“Who are you?” You ask, swallowing and relaxing a bit yourself now that he’s not glaring at you.
“Shit- uh, sorry.” It’s kind of funny how he goes from stern and foreboding to relaxed and then embarrassed as he swipes his hand on his jeans to clean them off before he offers that hand to you. “Frankie, Frankie Morales. I, uh, I’m the new caretaker.”
Wow. You take the man’s hand and like the warm, firm grip. “So they managed to hire someone.” You comment after giving your own name. “Never thought that they would.”
“Yeah.” He drops his hand and gives a small shrug. “It’s quiet and slow paced.” He bites on his lip for a second and something flashes through his brown eyes. Grief mixed with regret if you had to name it. Someone who has done things that he feels the need to atone for.
“That’s good.” You give him a smile and nod around you. “You won’t have to worry about co-workers complaining.”
He gives a small chuckle and he nods in agreement. “True. And they deserve to have a little bit of respect shown to them.” He looks back at your gear before looking at you. “I’m sorry for scaring you. The mayor told me that kids have been coming into the cemetery and they’ve found a few stones destroyed”
That was true. You wave away his second apology with a grin. “It’s okay. It got the blood pumping.” You bite your lip and hope that he won’t say no. “My plan was to start cleaning the stones back here. Scrape the moss and scrub them so that you can see their names and dates again.” You gesture back to the sprayers. “I am not using bleach, that’s the worst thing for them.”
Frankie nods and hums. “Well. I’m not going to stop you.” He tells before he gestures to his own tools. “I was planning coming out here today to clear the brush and overgrowth.” He must see you relieved expression before he gives you a smile.
You are relieved. You had honestly been looking forward to this and would hate to have been told you couldn't. You tilt your head to the side and give him a small smile in return. “Do you like classic rock?” You ask, pulling out your phone. “I planned on introducing them to some while I worked.”
Frankie gives a small chuckle and nods. “Careful it’s not too wild, they will be spinning in their graves.”
The joke, the dad joke, catches you off guard and makes you bark out a laugh. Which in turn make the new caretaker laugh again. You feel even better about this now, listening to his rusty laugh. Maybe together you can work to restore these stones to their former glory and learn about each other while you work.

Habitats don't forget themselves:
“Construction crews have been finding some seriously cool stuff while digging out a new mouth for the Don River in Toronto's Port Lands, but all of those old shoes and newspaper clippings from the 1800s pale in comparison to Waterfront Toronto's latest discovery: Brand new, very old plants.
"Over 100 years ago, fill was dumped into the biggest marsh in the Great Lakes to make the Port Lands. Now, we're digging that up to recreate a natural, marshy mouth for the Don River — and we discovered something surprising," reads a new post on the $1.25 billion Port Lands Flood Protection project's website.
....
It's been roughly five years since work began on what is being billed as "one of the largest waterfront revitalization projects in the world," and with every pound of soil removed Toronto comes one step closer to having a massive, brand new island with parks, housing, commercial and office space.
Villier's Island is expected to be complete by 2024, at which point the Don River will have been fully rerouted to protect the area from flooding (which is in fact the true impetus behind this massive undertaking.)
Progress on the river valley itself has been impressive, but excavating millions of cubic metres of old soil and gargbage takes time. While crews are working along at a clip, there's still dirt to remove and, apparently, treasures to uncover.
"In a low-lying section of the future river valley, construction crews noticed some unusual plants had sprung up out of nowhere. It's not uncommon to see plants on the site, but these plants caught their eye because they looked a lot like plants that grow in wetlands, not like the scrubby weeds that have popped up elsewhere," reads Waterfront Toronto's newest blog post, entitled "100-year-old seeds."
As it turns out, these plants were growing in an area that had been excavated about a year ago, some seven metres into the earth— deep enough to uncover the marsh's original soil without removing it.
"By chance, this area was relatively flat with poor drainage, and wasn't scheduled for further work for several months," reports Waterfront Toronto. "Over the summer the weather warmed up, water accumulated in the peaty soil, and more-than-century-old seeds sprang to life!"
It didn't take long for specialists to realize that these plants had grown from the historic marshland soil. Waterfront Toronto immediately reached out to the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority to relocate these precious new old plants and harvest any possible remaining seeds.
"We were able to identify at least two species of leafy plants that grew. Hard Stem Bulrush and Cattails were growing well, so we transplanted them to Tommy Thompson Park nearby," notes the blog post.
"The team also collected around 50 buckets of the surrounding soil, in the hopes that more seeds and species might germinate. We hope to know the results later in 2022."
Experts say it's pretty rare to find living plants that were around more than 100 years ago, and many are interested in studying the seeds. Waterfront Toronto says that a horticulturist at U of T is currently "overseeing the buckets of soil and conducting genetic tests on the plants."
"It's rare that you can compare a modern plant to a plant grown from pre-industrial seeds, so the discovery of these seeds was exciting," says Waterfront Toronto. "Only time will tell if plants adapted for the 1890s will be able to thrive in 2024 and beyond."”
- Lauren O’Neil, “Mysterious plants are sprouting from 100-year-old seeds at a Toronto excavation site,” BlogTO, April 21, 2022

i’ve been meaning to make a writblr for a year and i guess i’ve had this account for a while but i literally never post because i am so horribly uninspired!
about me:
desi, queer, american, autistic, 21
my pronouns are they/them
eye and vast alignment; scorpio sun, pisces moon, gemini rising
i am an english major with a creative writing concentration :)
i love to read! feel free to send recs! (even though i am not as good at reading these days)
i write high fantasy the most but my most recent endeavour is fantasy in the real world (i’m struggling) and new adult i think
feel free to tag me in games! especially if it involves oc’s. this blog probably won’t get very big i’m just bored and hoping this will get me to write
if you want to see fandom content check out my other sideblog @dream-to-be-frog <3 i’m very funny
my name for this account comes from my main, in which i have a hashtag called “#roshniwrites” because i have some poetry or short prose works posted on there <3 @radioactive-rosh
Tumblr media
about my writing:
i have been writing stories since i was in.... second grade? though i might’ve been having ideas since even earlier. i’ve found some hella old drafts of badly written things XD
i really started to write (not just come up with ideas) in middle school. a good amount of it was percy jackson (and occasionally hp, before i knew jkr was a horrible human being) fanfiction.
come high school, i wrote a lot more of my original stories, though most of them are either scrapped by now or, if the idea is still cool, on the backest of burners.
in spring of 12th year, i came up with one of my largest projects i’ve done. it was vaguely based off of a retelling of hades and persephone. i’ve come to a bit of a standstill with that one for now.
Tumblr media
wips !!
stellamaris
the name is still in the works, but “star of the sea” is cool and it kind of fits my mc so. for now
this is a story that was actually meant to be a spiteful (and elaborate) fanfiction if harry potter. i wanted to make all the characters queer and most of them trans just to piss off jkr because she’s a horrible human being but. it is not my job to fix her story.
anyway it has evolved far beyond its original goal, though the very very basic premise is the same.
students at a magic school, a big bad, enemies to lovers, worrying prophecy requiring the sacrifice of the chosen one (and the subversion of this trope)
stellamaris actually looks a bit more like the book carry on by rainbow rowell now.
my issue with it right now is that i simply have no clue how the magic system works because i can never think of a smarter system than rainbow’s and i don’t want it to look like i copied. like i know there’s no original stories etc. etc. but to a level. trying to create a new system makes me get a migraine but it’s the only story i care about at the moment
also i might cut down on how many main characters there are but i’m not sure which ones i am keeping i’m emotionally attached to them all. maybe i will transplant them into another story. god knows
on my original intro post about this i said i would likely post a lot of picrews about them but the truth is i am now questioning the main character’s design too so if i post it will be about one character and that is my darling juno <3
Tumblr media
blameless
this is a barely expanded upon idea
i thought of an idea of four friends who fell apart after high school because some shit went down and last year for my creative writing class i chose this story to write as a short story of when the four friends meet up again and try to get some closure
this is shockingly not fantasy, but if i write more about this maybe i will make it a bit fantasy. a bit supernatural. just because that’s my brand and writing only realistic fiction makes me sad. (who knows, maybe a life is strange true colors-esque superpower thing! we shall see)
Tumblr media
requiem
this has reached a bit of a standstill, to be honest. likely won’t be posting a whole lot about it because there are a lot of little things i need to work out
tbh sometimes i don’t want think i’ll go back to it at all but i wrote so much and all that closing the door completely seems rash. maybe in A Very Very Long Time
originally based loosely off of a retelling of hades and persephone (a less violent version, where persephone wanders off and thinks hades’s kingdom is neat)
i will not lie lore olympus ruined this for me a bit because that ““retelling”” makes me Super Very Mad
it’s the story i’ve written the most for my whole life; i drafted this my senior year of high school in spring when i said fuck all my classes and wrote like 78,000 words :P
some of the writing is really good i think (last i checked, like almost a year ago but that’s better than most writing) but i really don’t know if it’s going anywhere for a long time
(some friends have stories they’ve been writing since they were 11 and they still have ideas for that... shocking because that couldn’t be me props to them but i cannot)

The story of Swamp Rat 17: Don Garlits' most misunderstood Top Fueler (part 2)
The Wynn’s Liner sits proudly in Garlits museum, parked just ahead of Petersen’s own failed attempt at aerodynamics, the Can Am-inspired Olympia Top Fuel car that lived its own all-too-short life in 1974.
Any chat with Don Garlits is always a thrill, but for history geeks like me, it’s especially thrilling because of his incredible memory. He turned 89 in January, but his memory is as clear as if he were 29. He, of course, knows his cars inside out, remembering specifically not only the number of each Swamp Rat but wheelbases, engines, and great stories associated with each. I do a lot of interviews with the stars of yesteryear and many, many of them, quite naturally as they age, have less than excellent recall. Then there's "Big Daddy." He's amazing.
So, as promised earlier in this column, I asked him to rank his Swamp Rats in order of favorites. Although I'm sure that, given time, he could have ranked them from 1 to 38, I asked only for his Top 5.
Here’s his Top 5, including portions of the descriptions I wrote for my trio of Swamp Rat Spotters Guides a few years ago (Swamp Rats I-A to X | Swamp Rats XI to 20-B | Swamp Rats 21 to 34):
Tumblr media
No. 1, the first (1956-60): Although it wasn't his first dragster — he had made a crude, flathead-powered dragster from a '27-T roadster by moving the engine back and hanging a seat out over the rear end — it's the first car to wear the Swamp Rat name. The car was built on the framerails of a '31 Chevy passenger car that he bought at a junkyard for $35 in 1956; Garlits removed the frame from the body in the junkyard using little more than a large ax, a cold chisel, a ball-peen hammer, and a small assortment of hand tools. He transplanted most of the parts off of the flathead dragster to this car, except the driver seat, which was an old B-17 bomber seat. Initially using Ford power, Garlits switched to Chrysler Hemi power and later to high-gear-only. The carbureted version of this car is the one that beat the nay-saying Californians in Houston but got whipped by the West Coasters in Bakersfield, but as soon as "Big" added a blower, it was all over for everyone.
Tumblr media
No. 22, the 5.63 car (1975): The car that succeeded SR 21 would go into the record books in a "big" way and stay there for years: This is the car in which Garlits brought the class to its knees with a 5.63-second clocking at the World Finals, a record that stood for more than six years. Built by Garlits, “T.C.” Lemons, and Don Cook on a 240-inch wheelbase, the car was lightweight and fast from the first go. He had hoarded oversized Goodyear slicks, built a new engine, and even lengthened the chassis by 10 inches, and it all paid off with that monstrous 5.63 that helped him win the event and the championship and was attached to the sport's first official 250-mph run. The historic car was retired at year's end and has never left Garlits' possession other than for occasional displays; it was hauled out of mothballs to run at — and win — the 1977 Gatornationals.
Tumblr media
No. 26, the comeback car (1980-84): The follow-up to the porky “Godzilla” car, Swamp Rat 26 was "lean and light" — Garlits forsook paint for black anodized panels with stick-on lettering — and with the power that Garlits and Parks had learned to make to get the porky Godzilla car down the track, they seemed to be ahead of the game. The car was completed in time to run the Florida Winter Series events, but Parks quit that winter after the tough 1980 season, and Garlits won just two AHRA events in 1981. Garlits ran infrequently in the next three seasons, and Swamp Rat 26 might have just gone quietly into retirement as a disappointment had old pal Art Malone not called Garlits in the summer of 1984 and offered to fund a run at the 1984 Indy title. Malone got Garlits new parts, and they coaxed Parks out of retirement, and despite an aging car and a team of "dinosaurs" (Garlits' word), they won the race, completing a storybook comeback straight out of Hollywood. Garlits went on to also win a big eight-car Top Fuel show at Firebird Int'l Raceway and the NHRA World Finals — "Big Daddy" was back!
Tumblr media
No. 30, the streamliner (1986): In the pantheon of famous Garlits cars, this cockpit-canopied streamliner may well be at the top of the pyramid. Garlits had Mike Magiera fabricate the nosepiece and constructed front "tires" out of 13-inch aluminum discs wrapped with industrial fan belts to fit beneath it. The belts would exit the wheels after almost every run, but that didn’t stop the “Rat Under Glass” from running 272.56 mph in the car's winning debut in Gainesville in 1986. Garlits later abandoned those wheels to run small-airplane tires that worked well but, ironically, took flight in his famous July 12 blowover wheelstand at the NHRA Summernationals. The car had to be backhalved in the Florida shop to complete the season, which ended with Garlits atop the points standings. Swamp Rat XXX also ran about half of the 1987 campaign and then famously became part of a display at the Smithsonian Institution the following year.
Tumblr media
No. 34, the monowing car: Originally built in 1992 for Bruce Larson to drive after Garlits retired after experiencing eye problems caused by too many sudden parachute decelerations. At the end of the 1994 season, Garlits loaned the car to former Funny Car and fuel altered pilot Richard Langson and served as his crew chief in 1995, albeit with little success again. After years off the track, Garlits brought the car up to spec and competed at the 2002 Gatornationals and U.S. Nationals, then upped his speed mark to 323.04 at the 2003 Gatornationals. “It’s still the most modern Top Fueler in the world,” Garlits insisted to me. “It’s got the narrowed rear end and the mono wing rudder to make it go straight down the course, and the canopy.”
And, well, because Garlits was being so generous with his time and candor, I dared to ask him about his bottom five.
Tumblr media
“Well, only a half-dozen cars that didn’t cut the mustard, but from what we’ve already talked about today," he said. "I think you know the five already: the streamliner (SR17), ‘Shorty' (SR18), the sidewinder (SR27), the turbine car (Swamp Rat 28-A), and then it would be Swamp Rat 12-A. That car [pictured above, was the first Swamp Rat to be designated with Arabic numerals instead of Roman numerals] was too short [just 137 inches], and we only ran that in the winter series in California."
Tumblr media
My Spotters Guides from a few years ago ended at 34, but the numbers carried on after
35: 2009 DragPak stocker
36: 2011 Drag Pak stocker
37: First electric car
38: Second electric car
Swamp Rat 38 had been Garlits' hope for being the first battery-powered car to exceed 200 mph, but he was beaten to that mark last year by Steve Huff and parked the car.So, naturally, I had to ask Garlits if there would ever be a Swamp Rat 39.“Never say never,” he said, and I could detect a gleam in his eye even over a cellular connection. “Maybe I try to build a 250-mph electric car. There’s such fantastic battery technology coming, I don’t want to spend money on old technology. I still want to drive if I can by then. I still feel good, so I don't think that will be any problems.”Same ol' "Big Daddy." I can’t wait.Phil Burgess can reached at [email protected] of more articles like this can be found in the DRAGSTER INSIDER COLUMN ARCHIVE

Why is India becoming an attractive destination for medical tourists?
India is at present firmly established as the most preferred medical tourism destination in the world. Across the globe, Indian doctors and scientists are considered among the best, having trained in the best Indian and international medical institutions. Advances in technology have improved medical diagnoses and treatment of diseases that were considered untreatable some years ago in this country.
The corporate hospital standards in India are world-class, able to compete with the best and can offer you any service that you can find anywhere in the world. There are about 21 JCI Accredited and about 325 NABH accredited/impanelled hospitals in India. Some of the reputed private hospitals in India that attract most of these medical tourists are Apollo, Manipal, Narayana Hrudalaya, Fortis, Asian Heart, BM Birla Heart, HCG Oncology, Columbia Asia, Medanta, Sir Gangaram, Breach Candy, Moolchand, MIOT to name a few. The advantages of medical treatment in India include reduced costs and the availability of the latest medical technologies.
The Indian government is working on establishing minimum quality standards to reassure patients seeking treatment. The Joint Commission International USA is the Gold Standard accreditation for US and European hospitals that represent the provision of the highest level of patient care and safety.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF MEDICAL TOURISM IN INDIA?
In 2017, around 500,000 patients have visited India for their treatment and since then the number has been rising which makes India the third-largest country preferred by patients for their treatment. The following are some reasons that make India one of the best countries for the treatment of foreign nationals:
The biggest advantage for India becoming a popular medical tourism spot is the low-cost health care service.
In contrast to first-world countries like the US and UK, medical care in India will cost 60-90% lower and that makes it a great option to opt for medical treatment in India.
A person coming to India for medical treatment can save 30 to 70 per cent including the cost of ticket expenses & accommodation.
A large percentage of doctors who are specialized in countries like Germany, the UK, Australia and the States, is bringing quality standards from the Western world to India.
The foreign exchange rates also are low or modest. The rupee has been growing weak and this is beneficial for medical tourism to grow in India.
India has one of the largest pharmaceutical industries in the world, producing and exporting drugs to more than 180 countries. India has the availability of low-cost generic medicines.
India’s hospitals have earned the reputation as world-class institutions with state-of-the-art technology. State-of-the-art technologies is available to treat even the most difficult medical cases such as organ transplants, cardiovascular surgery, eye surgery, etc.
However, for some selected countries, a 30-days medical visa could be issued for treatment by the Indian Embassy. The length of stay in India for patients with a medical visa is 6 months.
India has some of the best hospitals in the world which are accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI) (USA Standard) and the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) (Indian Standard).

31 Horror Movies for the Halloween Season
Well.. It’s a little bit over 31 bc of sequels and such but it’s a fun title for horror recs! For the record these are in no particular order in like what’s the best or anything! It’s just a list of horror movie recommendations that might get you in the Halloween mood. I tried not to have huge well-known movies on here, but I did throw in a few just because I love them and couldn’t resist. I did try to add small descriptions for each one, but given there’s like 31 movies on here, they are rather short. Either way, hopefully you’ll find one or a couple movies here that you’re interested in!
1. Trick ‘r Treat
A rather well-known one but is it really a list without Trick ‘r Treat? A fun horror anthology with four different stories that connect to each other in some way - including the fact they all take place on Halloween night! A fun one to actually watch on Halloween.
2. Hell House LLC
For the record there are two sequels (Hell House LLC 2: The Abaddon Hotel & Hell House LLC 3: Lake of Fire), however I have not seen either of them so can’t include them here, but if you want to watch them I’d say go check them out! Basically it’s a documentary style type film that follows what happened up to the days a horrible tragedy took place on the opening night of a haunted house attraction. No one knows exactly what actually went down, so the reason for the documentary is to attempt to figure out what truly happened that night.
3. Repo! The Genetic Opera
A horror musical! It’s set in a future where organ failure is extremely common so naturally a huge company comes along and is like “Okay you can have an organ transplant, but you have a huge payment plan and if you can’t pay then we’re just gonna kill you and take your organs back.” Also it has so many good songs would highly recommend if you haven’t seen it (and you can stomach a bit of gore).
4. The Devil’s Carnival & Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival
Another horror musical! And done by the same people who did Repo! For the record The Devil’s Carnival is only about an hour long but the sequel is a full length movie! A short quick explanation is that it’s set in Hell (unsurprisingly) and follows the people who end up there - also during this the Devil is planning an attack - but I’ll let you find out the rest if you haven’t seen it yet.
5. Ju-On and/or The Grudge (Any Film)
It’s my favorite horror franchise, so of course Ju-On was gonna end up on here! Whether it be the original Japanese films or the American remakes, it follows vengeful spirits who were murdered in their home and are taking revenge on anyone who enters.
6. Sinister & Sinister 2
Okay I know Sinister 2 is one not very well liked, but since I have seen it I decided I might as well include it (though I don’t really remember my thoughts on it it’s been a while). Video tapes that contain children murdering their families and a mysterious being that may be at the center of it is the basic plot for these movies.
7. Tragedy Girls
Basically you got two best friends who capture a serial killer because they themselves want to become serial killers! Don’t wanna say too much outside of that, as that is the basic plot concept honestly, but it’s a really fun movie.
8. The Final Girls
A girl dealing with the anniversary of her mother’s death ends up, with a small group of others, stuck in a horror movie that her mother actually starred in. Okay as much fun as this one is it does pull on the heart strings a bit I gotta admit. But it’s truly great and naturally has a feel of an older slasher movie.
9. You Might be the Killer
Another one that’s got that older slasher movie vibe as it takes place at a camp. One where the counselors are getting picked off one by one by a masked killer. Comes in our protagonist, who is calling his friend, who isn’t at the camp and also is a huge horror enthusiast, for help to figure out what to do and maybe figure out what’s going on/who the killer is.
10. Danur (aka Danur: I Can See Ghosts)
A young girl who just wants friends finds them in the form of three potentially paranormal ones. Though it seemingly being just a childhood thing, it actually becomes of great importance as she gets older. This movie also has a sequel, Danur 2: Maddah.
11. Fright Night
For the record I am talking about the remake here, as I have not seen the original, but if you would prefer to watch that one - or maybe even both - go for it! Basically, teen starts to believe his new neighbor is a vampire after more and more people go missing. Also David Tennant is there if you go with the remake so that’s always fun!
12. Tales of Halloween
Admittedly I wasn’t too into this film, but I know a lot of people like it! Not too much to say, it’s a horror anthology with 10 different segments that take place on Halloween! So you’re bound to find something you enjoy within it, whether it be the paranormal, witches, or even just dumb fun horror comedy antics.
13. The Tag-Along
Based on an urban legend from Taiwan, “The Little Girl in Red”, it focuses on a man and his girlfriend. Of which the man’s grandmother suddenly goes missing one day - eventually leading to him discovering clues of a potential unknown little girl who had began following his grandmother around. There are two sequels to this movie as well that I have not seen yet, that being The Tag-Along 2 & The Tag-Along: The Devil Fish.
14. Three... Extremes
Another anthology film that contains three separate stories, each one coming from a different East Asian country. It also has a prequel, Three (or 3... Extremes II in the U.S.), and a full length film made from one of the stories within it, Dumplings.
15. The Hallow
Really feel like the point of this movie is like ‘Don’t fuck with the woods’. As it basically focuses on a couple and their baby, who seems to be the target for the odd things happening to them that seems rather connected to the woods nearby.
16. The Devil’s Candy
A man moves with his family into a new home, and slowly begins to feel as though something is possessing him in a sense. That and also the potential fact his family is being targeted by the previous resident of the home.
17. Wake Wood
Apparently FMA did not teach us not to fuck with the dead enough, so here’s a movie about a grieving couple that lost their daughter who move into a town that holds the power to bring someone back from the dead for only 3 days. Unfortunately like FMA, things go horribly wrong (just not... in the same way as FMA).
18. The Cabin in the Woods
College students go out to a cabin in the woods in which things quickly take a turn for the worst. Seems simple enough, but it’s so much more complicated than that - however I won’t be sharing any of those details for those who haven’t watched it yet.
19. Prevenge
A pregnant woman who’s husband has recently passed away, believes that her unborn child wants her to track down and kill everyone who was involved in the accident. An extremely wild but honestly rather fun time.
20. You’re Next
Home invasion, baby! In which everything goes to hell for a family and their partners when masked killers start trying to kill everyone there. Though things take a turn quick and you start to wonder who is really the ones being hunted down here. (A fairly well known one, but I had to recommend it given one of my favorite characters in horror is in this movie)
21. Kuronezumi (aka Black Rat)
Not too much to say here basic plot wise. Six students receive texts from their dead classmate, they follow as the texts ask and go to the school at night, and then start getting targeted by a killer wearing a rat mask.
22. Lights Out
A family potentially being haunted by a creature that only appears when the lights go out? Plus a whole lot of family drama? Always fun truly! It’s also somewhat based off a viral short film of the same name that the director had made before he got to make it a full length film.
23. Absentia
Absolutely had to put a Mike Flanagan movie on here. One that focuses on a pregnant woman who’s started towards attempting to move on with her life after her husband disappeared seven years ago. However, as she takes a huge step towards doing so, something rather odd happens - which I’ll let you find out for yourself if you choose to watch it.
24. Halloween III: Season of the Witch
Perhaps it’s because it’s the one Halloween movie without Michael Myers, or perhaps it’s because I was blanking out on movies I watched that aren’t extremely well-known, but I felt the need to add this one on here. It focuses on this man who is out to kill children on Halloween by using a line of Halloween masks. So basically another fun one to watch on Halloween!
25. The Barn
Teenagers go to a barn where there’s a supposed curse that can awaken Halloween-themed monsters on Halloween night. What could possibly go wrong? Honestly another one that would be a lot of fun to actually watch on Halloween.
26. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
A really fun documentary type film where it’s set in a world where iconic horror slashers are actually real! And a documentary crew are out to make a movie centered around Leslie Vernon, who wishes to go down in history as another one of the famous slashers. This one is really just *chef’s kiss* to me, very much recommend if you haven’t seen it.
27. Creep & Creep 2
Found footage type films in which we follow people who are hired by this rather concerning man to film him. That’s really all I can say unfortunately without trying to give away too much.
28. What We Do in the Shadows
Another documentary-style type movie! It tends to be more comedic than it is horror, but it follows  a group of vampires that live together! Sort of documenting their lives and how they survive day by day. Honestly it’s so ridiculous and hilarious, and I know many people have seen it by now but I have to recommend it none the less as it’s one of my favorites. Plus, it also has an equally hilarious tv series now that you can also give a watch!
29. The Banana Splits Movie
Who doesn’t want to see the Banana Splits as animatronics that start randomly slaughtering people after the news that their show is going to be cancelled? Honestly it’s really just a fun, ridiculous movie that isn’t meant to be taken seriously. Perhaps something to watch with friends to get in the mood for Halloween.
30. The Last Exorcism
Another one that has a sequel I have not seen: The Last Exorcism Part II. Another documentary style film (Sorry I added so many of these whoops), that follows a reverend who goes around performing fake exorcisms. Things start getting a bit more complicated though when lines start beginning to blur between what is real and what is fake while doing his current “exorcism” he was asked to perform.
31. V/H/S & V/H/S 2
There is also a third film, V/H/S: Viral, however I have not seen that one. Not too much to say here, they’re basically just an anthology of short horror films that are supposedly being shown from VHS tapes.
