JOC Symbol Athletes Interview: Uno Shoma || Jul 22, 2021
"Before I got attention like this, I was always having trouble jumping."
His junior period in which he was having trouble jumping.
"I really, really couldn't jump. While I think I was honestly doing more than anyone else in terms of the amount of practice, I did not succeed at all."
Even so he didn't stop jumping.
"Before I knew it, jumping became what supports me now, and suddenly something I used to hate became something I enjoy. There were also times in which what I thought was my strength was also my weakness."
The silver medal he seized by facing his weakness
"At first I was completely unaware to the fact that I got second place in Olympics. When it was off-season, a lot of people started talking to me, things like the change in my appearance order in ice shows, I was made to realize how much my own position has changed within just one year. Along with that, I realized my sense of responsibility and what my role was in this. Over the course of this one year, it was a year which I was able to reconfirm my strengths and weaknesses."
And so the era changes from Heisei into Reiwa.
In 2019, he was elected as a JOC Symbol Athlete.
"It's something I'm very thankful for. And also the fact that it's a "Symbol", it's something which people aim for. Not ashamed to be seen. I always thought I want to be someone like that, so I think I must be an athlete who's worthy of that."
Growing self-awareness as a top athlete
"With the change of rules... Challenging difficult jumps, I quit them quite a bit in my own way. I'd do the jumps I could do in competitions. You can say my feelings were defensive. That's why next year I won't think too much into it and continue challenging it even more."
He'll continue challenging until his limit.

Facing you, I am
tidally locked. I am not yet
caught in orbit.
I want to be a body
for you. Know this:
I am only as good as you are willing to be
to me. There is nothing
but the sound of the mirror
shattering. No light between us
but the sound of the mirror.
To me, there is nothing.
I am only as good as you are willing to be.
For you know this:
I want to be a body
caught in orbit,
tidally locked. I am not yet
facing you. (I am.)

Shoma Uno, Colantotte Interview Series || Part 2/5
How do you relax on the big stage?
I don’t have a routine at all and I don’t think I have a method to stop myself from getting nervous. People who don’t get nervous either have a significant mental power or they haven’t practiced,,, My way of thinking is that I just enjoy the moment.
People who tend to get nervous are people who have high level of expectations from themselves or those who have practiced a lot. There are times when practicing a lot would give you self-confidence, as well as add to the pressure. I tend to put a lot of pressure on myself and the more I practice, the more pressure I put on myself. Of course, if you don’t practice you can’t do good things, so there have been times where I fell into a terrible vicious cycle.
I said I wasn’t nervous at the Olympics, but I really enjoyed it. Rather than pursuing something good for myself, I decided to do what I always do at any other competition, as usual, without any special awareness of the Olympics. I think I probably didn’t get nervous because I was enjoying the situation in which I was in.
