vro0m’s rewatch - 111/304
2013 Australian GP
Okay hi! Yes it’s still me, vousnavezrienvuf1, in case you missed it I changed my username to vro0m but this is still the big Lewis rewatch except it’s now called vro0m’s rewatch. I changed the tag but it’s still the same content.
Anyway it’s a new season! Let me say first of all that I had waaaay less problems with the lack of content this time, except for 3 races... Including this one lol. So yeah. No gifs this time around but I promise there's a lot of them coming. Like. A lot.
Let’s get started!
First off, let's head to Wikipedia to see the main changes for the season.
HRT liquidated so we now have 11 teams on the grid : RedBull, Ferrari, McLaren, Lotus, Mercedes, Sauber, Force India, Williams, Toro Rosso, Caterham and Marussia.
Also we know most of that from the 2012 season reviews but as a recap :
Of course Lewis joined Mercedes and Schumacher retired for the second time.
Perez left Sauber to take Lewis' seat at McLaren.
Hulkenberg left Force India after one year even though he had a multi-year deal with them to go to Sauber, with Gutierrez as a team-mate.
Hulkenberg's seat at Force India was filled by Sutil, who didn't have a seat in 2012.
Gutierrez thus took Kobayashi's spot. Kobayashi tried to raise money by asking his fans for donations but he gave up trying to find a seat after Lotus announced they would keep Grosjean.
Bottas started at Williams with Maldonado, Senna losing his seat.
Pic went from Marussia to Caterham where he joined Van der Garde, which means both Kovalainen and Petrov were out. Abiteboul said at some point that Kovalainen got left out because he had a bad relationship with the team while Petrov lost his seat due to a lack of sponsors.
Glock was supposed to stay with Marussia but he opted out. Marussia signed Chilton and Razia, but Razia was not on the line-up in the pre-season testing in Barcelona, leading to rumours. Later, we learned that his sponsors failed to pay what they were supposed to and he got suspended. He ultimately got replaced by none other than Jules Bianchi.
HRT disappearing also meant that de la Rosa and Karthikeyan lost their jobs.
Calendar-wise, I discover that Bernie said at the time that 20 seemed to be the maximum viable number of races for a season. Welp.
The number of races is part of the Concorde agreement and it expired at the end of 2012 so there could've been more if the teams had agreed to it but in the end, there were 19 races in 2013. Originally, it was supposed to be 20, with a… New Jersey Street circuit?! But it didn't happen and they didn't find a replacement so that was it.
…...no but seriously : NEW JERSEY STREET CIRCUIT?!
Anyway let's move on. Rule changes.
After n*zi-pr*stitutes Max Mosley failed to introduce a budget cap in 2010, the FIA "announced plans to introduce cost-control measures for 2013". I don't know what that entailed concretely.
The quali procedures were adapted after HRT's departure : 6 cars eliminated in Q1 instead of 7, then 6 in Q2, and the top 10 in Q3.
During FPs and quali, the drivers are now only allowed to use the DRS in the DRS zones, as opposed to wherever they wanted to up until that point. Because of that, the number of DRS zones was brought up to 2 wherever it was possible.
After Seb's issues in Abu Dhabi '12 the rules of force majeure were altered. Initially, you could only stop the car on the track during quali and not be penalized if you could prove that you didn't have a choice and it was out of the team's control. From 2013 onward, force majeure is not a good enough reason to do so. The stewards will check the remaining amount of fuel in any car that has stopped on the track to check if it abides by the rules and calculate a penalty based on the difference.
The teams now have only 2 jokers to the curfew rule, rather than 4.
The entry fee was increased to 500'000 dollars (holy shit) PLUS 5'000 per point scored in the WCC with the reigning team paying 6'000/point?! So RBR had to pay no less than 3'260'000$ in 2013. That's absolutely fucking insane.
Oh lmao. Brace yourselves. The 2012 regs led to the development of a nose deemed "platypus nose" that was described as "ugly" by many people (Domenicalli said "not that pretty"). Charlie Whiting said that the new regs for 2014 would change that anyway but in the meantime the teams were allowed to use what was called, and I kid you not, "a modesty plate" to hide the platypus nose's ugliness without altering the aerodynamics. I'm honestly losing my mind over this.
Mercedes had developed a "double-DRS" system in 2012 that was banned in 2013. It allowed "to create a stalling effect over the front wing when the rear wing DRS was open". Basically it counteracted the downforce it generated, giving the car higher speed and better stability. Lotus developed a similar system before the teams agreed to the ban but the new regs specifically banned Mercedes' system and not the Lotus' one?!
Also before then, any change to the sporting or technical regs required 70% (so 9) of the teams' agreement. From 2013 onwards, it only took 51% so 6 teams.
Here you go for the 2013 context. Now let's see that first race!
Oooh the weather is not great. It's very overcast. Seb is on pole in a Redbull front row. Lewis is 3rd! Massa 4th, Alonso 5th, Rosberg 6th, Raikkonen 7th and team-mate Grosjean 8th, Di Resta 9th and Jenson completes the top 10. Hulkenberg is supposed to be 11th but he's out : problem with the fuel system.
Formation lap
The top 10 is on supersofts. They're getting them out of the way, they don't last for very long.
And they're racing!
OHhh Massa overtakes Webber, Lewis gets a good start but Alonso is side by side with him after turn 2. Webber is going backwards. Lewis loses a place. So it's Seb, Massa and Alonso stepping on each other's toes, Lewis and Raikkonen doing the same, then Rosberg, Webber down in 7th already, Di Resta and Jenson. Alonso overtakes Massa for P2 while Lewis locks up and loses his position to Raikkonen. No he resists! Massa also resisted! Raikkonen attacks again but Lewis has the inside line. It's incredibly close. A few corners later, it's a done deal, Raikkonen up in 4th. And Rosberg? No. Lewis was down in 6th but he got back up in 5th.
What happened to Jenson? He's down in 21st and pitting. Weird. Massa is within 1 second of Seb and Alonso also less than 1 second behind him. Webber pits. It's not good. Lewis is losing on Raikkonen though. Seb pits. Raikkonen is only 2 seconds off the lead, these Lotuses are something… Massa pits. Alonso pits and has to brake hard to hit the speed limit, with Raikkonen behind him. Maldonado goes wide.
10 laps in, can we see the graphics please… Lewis leads in front of Rosberg, Sutil and Perez. They all have to stop and God knows why Mercedes isn't bringing the boys in right now. Then it's Seb, Massa, Alonso, Raikkonen on new tyres. And Seb overtook Perez… what use is there to keeping them out?
Btw I have to say these Redbulls have a purple hue now and it's very pretty. I like purple. Why don't we have any purple cars actually. Here are the 10 colours I'd choose for the cars if it was up to me (I know you didn't ask for it but I'm writing the review so I can do what I want) : White, Black, Deep pink, Dark green, Aureolin Yellow, French violet, Dark candy apple red, Ice blue, Zaffre blue and Tangelo orange.
Tumblr media
Also all the cars would be sparkly by obligation. I said what I said. (I'm ashamed of how long I just spent on this omg.)
Anyway Lewis isn't struggling too much with the grip so at least there's that. His pace is good. But now the mechanics are out! Lewis comes in. Ah right. We're at that time when both Mercedes drivers are wearing yellow helmets so it's a struggle to tell them apart. He's out in 8th. Rosberg also pits. He's 9th just in front of Jenson. Lewis asks if his pace is good and he's told it's good enough. Oooh right, it's Bono now 💜 hi baby Bono nice to hear you!
On lap 19 Webber pits again. He was losing a lot of time behind Jenson. At the moment it's Sutil in the lead, Seb being 1.5 seconds behind, but Massa is half a second behind him and attacking, with Alonso still only half a second away too. And Alonso pits. He's out behind the Mercedes. Jenson pits. Sutil is called in. Seb also pits. Sutil is still ahead. And Alonso goes past Sutil! It's messy I don't know what the order is anymore.
Massa is leading. Then it's Raikkonen and ten seconds behind Lewis, Rosberg, Alonso and so Sutil and Seb. Seb overtakes Sutil. Webber overtook Perez and he's now P10. Massa pits and he's out behind Sutil. That didn't go well for him. Anyway Lewis is P2 then. Seb is closing on Alonso and rain is announced. Oh. Maldonado is beached in the gravel. It's over for him. Alonso is also catching Rosberg… oh? Rosberg just pulled over? What happened to him… It means Alonso is up in P3. Massa is trying to overtake Sutil. The public is putting raincoats on. Alonso is only 2 seconds away from Lewis. It is drizzling. Lewis is told to push but he answers this is as fast as he can go at the moment. That gap is already down to half a second. He defends but it won't be enough. Lewis asks if Alonso is on a three stop strategy. Bono answers yes but they still want to keep him behind. He's defending like a lion it's fucking crazy. HE LOCKS UP BUT HE STILL MAINTAINS POSITION jesus it's tense. Aaah Alonso got past and now Seb is right there behind him as well. But Lewis pits! There's 26 laps to go. He's out in P7, in front of Webber. And Raikkonen finally pits. He's out in P5 behind Massa. Lewis says his tyres won't last to the end at this pace. Now we have Alonso in the lead, 4.8 seconds ahead of Seb, 3 seconds ahead of Sutil, 1.1 seconds ahead of Massa, 5 seconds ahead of Raikkonen, a staggering 12.5 seconds ahead of Lewis. This is not looking good.
Seb pits. He's behind Lewis. Jenson pits. Grosjean pits. Massa is only one second behind Seb and he sets the fastest lap. Webber pits. Seb is swooping on Lewis. Alonso pits. He's out in P3 behind Raikkonen. Seb overtakes Lewis. Sutil is back in the lead but he has to stop again. Massa overtakes Lewis.
Rosberg says his DNF was an electronic problem, he says there's graining and the conditions out there are really unusual.
Ricciardo retires. Alonso is coming back at Raikkonen on pure pace. Lewis is told to move to plan B. Webber overtakes Di Resta for P8. Lewis pits again?! He's out in 6th some 25 seconds off Massa. Raikkonen overtakes Sutil for the lead. Alonso overtakes Sutil for P2. Sutil pits, he's out in fifth so ahead of Lewis, in that big gap. Bianchi is told there's very light rain on the radar. 8 laps to go. Oh wait.
Remember at some point I said Sutil got into a fight in a Chinese club and got condemned in court for it? Apparently Lewis was there and it ended their friendship.
Anyway that's gossip. Lewis is fighting Sutil. It's so close. And it's done! Now Webber overtakes Sutil. 5 laps to go.
And it's the end of the race.
Raikkonen wins. Alonso P2, Seb P3. Lewis P5.
Sorry, as I said, that's all I have for this GP. No gifs this time.

Sebastian Vettel x RBDesignEngineer Reader.
Set in 2013 during the GP, Jennifer is fresh out of uni and has made a name for herself within the F1 world. She joins Redbull-Renault as one of their engineer designers and easily fits into the team, forming friendships easily. Most of all, she captures the attention of three time world champion, Sebastian Vettel.
Part 2 - here the LINK to part 1. Warning: Jen’s bf is a controlling, toxic ASSHOLE, so mentions of abuse that may be triggering to some. Bf is a dick bcs the angst is fun to write- Seb takes an instant dislike to her bf because he just has a good eye for evil people 😈 let’s just say Sebastian slays her bday whilst her bf… is a flop.
Tumblr media
Australia, Albert Park, March 17th. “-And I told them, you gotta look out for Sebastian’s tires, but nobody wanted to listen to me!” I explained, leaning over to speak directly into the drivers ear over the loud club music. Our first race in Australian with the RB9 went relatively good apart from a good teething issues. Teething issues that I did point out but the mechanics were happy with the tires that brought Sebastian down from pole to 3rd- still not a bad result.
“Next time, I am listening to you.” Seb slipped an arm over the back of the booth, behind me, the comment and smile he flashed me sending a rush of warmth through my chest. With Dutch courage I was able to chatter freely to Sebastian. “Well, I’m not really a mechanic.” I shrugged. “Hm?” He leaned in a little closer. My breath hitched, scanning over his face as the tipsy man leant against me slightly. “I just said, I’m not really a mechanic…” I gently spoke, eyes falling to the small gap between us. Feeling a little tense, my eyes roamed around the room, suddenly catching a glimpse of a tall, dark haired man ahead of me. The warmth that once spread through my chest was ignited into an uncomfortably hot fire. It raged deep inside of me, the sensations of panic, guilt, comfort all hitting me at once. It was my boyfriend. All the way from England. An odd sickness knocked me still, and it wasn’t from the alcohol. “Luke!” I borderline choked out, feeling Sebastian pull back slightly, eyeing up the figure with an awkwardly dirty expression. I cringed instantaneously.
“Who is that?” Sebastian questioned jusf as I was pushing myself out of the booth. “My boyfriend.” I was just as shocked, if not more than everybody else seemed to be. It wasn’t that I acted single around here, I just never told anybody about Luke, my anxieties and uncomfortable sensation that surrounded the topic was no exception in the current moment. “Hi!” I breathlessly walked over, halting in front of him. “What’re you not gonna give me a kiss? C’mere.” He pulled me, as I tripped forwards, feeling his lips on mine. The sensation felt foreign, it had been over 2 weeks since I’d last seen him, I hoped with the distance came separation- but Luke was insistent that if I took this job he would follow me. Yes- follow me.
“Oh, you’ve still got that shit on your lips.” He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand as I stared at him, forcing a smile. It was weird, I felt nothing, nothing but a slight fear seeing the bottle of alcohol clutching in his left hand. I already had the breakup rehearsed so perfectly in my mind, ready for my next venture home. The same breakup I’d attempted four times over in a mere six months out of the eighteen we had spent together. “Sorry.” I awkwardly spoke, not loud enough so he could hear me. When he turned to the rest of my friends sat around I felt a pang in my chest knowing what he was expecting.
“This is Luke, um, here’s Christian- you know Christian, Molly, James, oh there’s Manny, that there is Sebastian-”
“Yeah, I know who Sebastian is, hun.” Luke nudged me off as a joke as I now sat across from where I previously was, unable to meet anybody’s eye. “Oh, you never mentioned a boyfriend, Jen!!” James exclaimed. “Oh, you didn’t?” There came that passive aggressive laugh from Luke’s clenched jaw. I mentally swore as James’ word. I knew he didn’t mean it to sound so bad, but I just knew there’d be an argument later that night. Across from me, I watched Sebastian’s eyes narrow towards the man before he seemed to shake it off and sip from his own drink. It was only a brief glance, sparingly looking at Luke. Maybe I was just being dramatic, but he didn’t seem too happy. And when he looked at me, he just looked purely confused. That’s pretty how much it went for the rest of the evening, Luke’s anger was becoming more and more noticeable until we got inside the hotel room. To our left, was Sebastian, and to our right was a poor Hannah, RedBull’s Senior Strategy Engineer.
I was silent when the bedroom door closed, Luke stumbled straight to the hallway, spinning around to me and spitting when the door was shut. “Yeah now you’re being so quiet, hardly happy to see me after three weeks, are you?” “I was just shocked.” I stumbled, placing my bag on the side. “It’s your birthday next week, why wouldn’t I be here?!” He snapped. “I said I was just shocked, that’s all.” I repeated, reaching over for my makeup wipes. “Don’t bother wearing all that shit on your lips next time, looks stupid anyway.”
“Luke!” I exclaimed in shock as he blew me off, stripping off his shirt and dropping himself into bed. “You and I both know why you’re wearing it.”
“Because I like it.” I defended, harshly ripping an wipe out of the packet. “I don’t… I know the other men do though.”
“Oh my god, don’t start this…” I felt borderline defeated already, standing like a lemon as I wanted to plead with the drunk to shut up. “Yeah, oh my god!” He shot back up out of bed, still jean classed. “You never fucking said how many men you were working with, now you’re dressing like this, acting like this! You don’t even tell them you have a fucking boyfriend!”
“Please be quiet, everybody’s next door-” “You think I give a fuck who’s next door?!” He hissed back as I sighed, hurrying to make my way to the bathroom. I locked myself in, feeling and hearing him slam on the door in response. I could hear the heaviness of his angered breathing from the other side of the wood. I hated when he got this intense and riled up, it struck a fear inside me then I figured it was just better to shut up rather than ignite his anger further.
“You’re the only one who gives a fuck, Jennifer! Nobody else! None of these people give a shit about you either! What, after three months you think they want to be friends with you?!” I felt complete and utter humiliation as he yelled away, I knew these hotel rooms weren’t soundproof, the thought of everybody knowing we were having a domestic after one night felt humiliating and damaging- never mind his words that hit a sensitive part deep inside of me. “A world champion, F1, fucking celebrity, wanting to be friends with you. You’re fucking kidding me, Jennifer. Get a fucking life!” That night I slept in the bathroom. It sounded absolutely pathetic, I know it was, but it was the reality of being with Luke. It’s like now he was back I felt this odd attachment to him, like without him I’d be lonely and he was my crutch to this whole world. Pathetic, again. I knew, but I couldn’t control it. I missed the separation I once had from him, and when my birthday rolled around the week after he was still there, this time, in a different country, Malaysia.
“Happy birthday! Happy, happy birthday, why didn’t you say it was your birthday?!” An all so familiar voice walked in through to where I was seated in front of my computers, I audibly gasped, feeling arms wrap around my front. It was Sebastian. “Oh!” My hands flew up to the warmth of his skin, his hands gentle as he gave me a light squeeze into his chest.
“I- thank you!” I laughed, feeling him glance over my side to give me the most adoring smile. “23?” “22. I accidentally told the camera guy the other day I was already 22.” I winced as he laughed, arm sliding off me. “No need to keep your birthday a secret though?!” Seb stood up straighter as I pushed my head phones off, gazing up to him with that fluttering feeling lingering in my chest. “I know… how did you know it was my birthday?”
“I know everything. You’ll be here until 4, right?” “5 tonight.” “Perfect.” “Why?” “Just perfect.” god knows what he meant, he was back and fourth all day, working out, chatting, checking out his car, tyres, eating, chatting some more, getting back to work and meetings. Eventually I’d wondered if nothing was to come at all from our brief conversation, it wasn’t like I expected anything, but I was just confused.
“Your boyfriend treat you to anything nice?” Hannah perked a brow, offering me an oddly knowing look. I knew she’d heard our argument back in Australia, I could tell by the way she’d look at me the next morning, ask if I was okay- I didn’t continue any further discussion about it with her.
“Yeah!” I took a deep inhale, pushing one headphone off. “Yeah.” I responded again, gathering my thoughts. Correction- lies. “What’s he got?” She responded as I awkwardly laughed, letting out a gentle exhale through my nose.
“He’s not given me it yet.” I defended, biting down on my lip and returning my attention back to my computer. My teeth were gritted together and my leg began to bounce uncomfortably from under the desk.
“He’s not got you anything has he?” She honestly spoke as I cleared my throat. “No.” The urge to get upset was creeping up on me.
“What? Did you say your boyfriends got you nothing?” This time, an Australian accent approached, Mark Webber was there, brows furrowed. “Ah- not yet.” I forced a laugh. “Well it’s a good thing we’re all-”
“Happy birthday to you…” Oh my god… “Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday dear Jeeeeeen, happy birthday to you!” I gasped in complete and utter ecstasy seeing everybody gathering, singing happy birthday. At either side of the cake stood Christian and Sebastian (of course) with a huge 22 in pink fondant spread across the cake. My heart swelled and lips immediately lifted, I almost felt tears fill my eyes as I perched on the edge of my seat, blowing out the 22 candles lit across the cake. Nobody had ever done anything like that for me before, ever… and the mastermind behind it all?? Sebastian Vettel.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you, for today!” I practically threw my arms around the German man. He audibly giggled into my embrace, leaning down to kiss my cheek as I laughed, slightly tipsy from the few glasses of champagne I’d been fed. Christian told me to ‘fuck off work’ and the lot of them all enjoyed a few drinks with me. “You deserve a good birthday, everybody does, no?”
“I know but… I just didn’t expect it today, I appreciate it, thank you.”
“I would’ve gotten you a present if I knew sooner, but… hopefully your boyfriend treats you with something good.” He honestly spoke as I felt my heart pang. A sad kinda laugh escaped my lips as Sebastian cocked his head to the side with a confused expression.
“What’s funny?” “Nothing, really, just… I don’t think anything can top all that today, thank you again.” I smiled as he nodded back to me, lips stretched. He reached out, rubbing my upper back before we headed back to our rooms.
“Oh and Jen?” “Yeah?” “If he shouts at you on your birthday, I’ll come barging in…”

On This Day in F1: March 24th
Present: Australian Grand Prix
History: 2013 Malaysian Grand Prix
On March 24th, 2024, the Australian Grand Prix occurred. After last years Aus GP, most people expected craziness and the Williams lack of third chassis had delivered some of that craziness.
However the main story was Max Verstappen having his first retirement since the 2022 Australian Grand Prix - marking his 43 race streak and preventing him from matching his 10 win streak. Carlos Sainz overtook Verstappen as his car was failing and held the lead for the rest of the race with Charles Leclerc coming in second for a Ferrari 1-2 and Lando Norris on the last step of the podium.
The other big race retirement was Lewis Hamilton due to his engine giving out. Then there were the extremely long Sauber pit stops which gave us a lesser version of the 2020 Ham-Ver-Bot (or any other variation of it) podiums.
And on the last lap, George Russell crashed which was honestly terrifying to see because he was in the middle of the track and the car was on its side. Luckily, Lance Stroll was far back enough that he could be told about Russell in the middle of the track and to take precautions to avoid Russell.
Eleven years ago, Formula One was racing in Malaysia. Most people remember Malaysia for the Red Bull drama with Multi-21. This makes sense because it is a very memorable moment in time and we got the iconic "I was racing, I was faster, I passed him, I won," quote from Sebastian Vettel when he was asked about overtaking his teammate despite being told to not overtake.
(sidenote: Seb's words were true then and they remain true now. You're racing, if you're faster then pass him and win the race. There is a place for team orders, but in at least half of the cases where drivers ask about team orders now, they are not necessary if you're the faster driver. Just pass your teammate.)
While the drama about team orders and Multi-21 was going on at Red Bull, Lewis Hamilton drove into the wrong pit box. It was Hamilton's first season with Mercedes after 6 years with McLaren F1 and a total of 13 years with McLaren.
Both McLaren and Mercedes were prepared for their drivers to pull into the pit box, but McLaren was not expecting their previous driver to stop there. However, Hamilton was able to quickly leave the pit box and go to the Mercedes pit box which luckily was after the McLaren pit box, not before.
youtube
Hamilton did end up finishing 3rd in the race and apologized for the gaffe. Jokingly, he said, "I did a Jenson (Button). He did that a couple of years ago, but big apologies to the team." Referring to Jenson Button at the 2011 Chinese GP where he pulled into the Red Bull pit box instead of the McLaren pit box.

Oooh, it's a little bit old, but if anon wants F1 scandals with 'test' in the name I have a few older/smaller ones to offer. There's Buttongate; referring to Jenson Button's contract saga in 2005, which involved him being signed to two different teams at once. There was also Testgate in 2013, where Mercedes had a secret tyre test with Pirelli. Liegate, where at the 2009 Australian GP Lewis, under instructions from McLaren's Team Manager, lied to the stewards and got disqualified as a result. I can't think of any others right now.
There was also a gate involving Giedo Van Der Garde and his contract with Sauber 💀

hi gp!! i love ur acc hehehe i just wanted to ask a rlly quick question! w/ all the tour announcements recently (matt&jonathan returning to the world tour and places like vienna, etc. having productions), why do you think cameron&co haven’t announced another US tour? like exactly how it used to be on bway but on the road? idk if im the only one, but i’ve been lowkey waiting for an announcement since bway closed bc i feel like there’s a cash grab opportunity there?? i'm surprised they haven't <3
Hey, thanks for enjoying the blog!
As for your question: my honest answer to "why hasn't a US tour been announced" is simply "because it's not related to the other productions", at least not directly so. Like, I don't really see how the announcements of a World Tour and the Vienna production starting up (it was announced a while ago) should mean that a US tour must be announced and if it isn't, then something is going on. To me, all it means is that the pieces fell into place for some productions and that they're still working on the pieces for another. (And it is a lot of pieces: you have to negotiate with theaters, find or build set pieces and costumes and wigs, get cast and crew and orchestra, build up hype and marketing, and so on and so forth).
And really, if you look at some of these productions, there are still gaps of over a year or more between them (and it has been less than a year since the Broadway production closed). In the case of the Vienna production, even though it was announced before the Australian tour had even closed, there was still over a year between when the news broke (January 2023) and when it opened (March 2024). This was also a case where the higher-ups knew the Australian production would be over at a certain date and that the sets and costumes would be readily available for the next production. As far as I know, the production is also only going to be in Vienna, not touring (which is a bit odd since the restaged sets are made for touring, but whatever), so that also means only one theater to negotiate and set dates for performances.
And in the case of the World Tour, again, this was something where all the pieces were set up and just had to fall into place: the Chinese tour was over, which meant sets and costumes are now available; the World Tour had been all set to go to China before it was paused to begin with, so now that restrictions are lifted, they can just take off from there; the World Tour has always been popular in China and the other countries in Asia that they visit, so there's demand; and apparently several cast members are available, so they didn't even have to do much casting. I don't know how contracts and negotiations are done in this kind of situation (it is a bit of an oddball one), but it seems it all worked out here.
That doesn't mean I don't think there will be a US tour coming soon, as you say it's a huge opportunity to make money, but I do think that they need to get all the pieces together. For one thing, I don't think it's going to exactly how it was on Broadway, either before the COVID shutdown or after it reopened; I think that it'll be close to the tour that ran briefly in the UK in 2020, with the Pegasus statue, reduced orchestra, some more modifications in blocking and design, that kind of thing. But of course, the question is, are there sets available for that and if not, they need to build or modify ones, have they finished negotiating with theaters for all that, and then the necessary time to drum up hype and marketing. That can take time!
And to look at a similar example in the US: look at when Phantom's 3rd national tour closed (October 2010) and the 4th one was announced and started (November 2013). If you want to argue that that's because the restaged tour was going around the UK before going to the US (which it was), well, the UK tour was still announced nearly a year after the US tour had closed (October 2011) and with an opening a few months after that (February 2012).
So anyway, that's my long-winded answer: one production starting up in one part of the world, doesn't necessarily indicate anything about a production in another part of the world. While it's all under the heading of Phantom and RUG, there are still many different people and many different companies working through all the different facets that go into making a show possible.

re: seb helmets.. i looked on his website, but couldn't find anything matching the helmet in nando's museum. he doesn't have 2009 or 2010 helmets on there, though, so it could be from then? it looks pretty generic, not seb's usual fare...
Yeah his website is helpful but definitely doesn't have the full scope of his helmets, even from the years it does have. I think with the Ferrari and Aston years they're all there, but there's definitely ones missing from before? And yeah 2009 and 2010 of course, not there :( even though those are some of my favs :((
But im pretty sure it has to be 2013 or 2014 because of the Infiniti logo on the front(that place used to be reserved for the Wings for Life logo up until 2013 as far I'm aware?) I'd have to do more research about it bcs im not 100% well versed in his helmets, but like I said in my tags, I think it's this one on the left?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's just a bit confusing bcs that one looks more silver and the one in the museum looks gold, but it could be down to lighting and angles. But yeah I'd have to research more but I feel like these look too similar for it to be a coincidence y'know?
But yeah I agree with you, it's a bit plain. Though I do really love the reflective bulls!! He was always doing really interesting things with the bulls!!! But actually hm I wonder, bcs im pretty sure he wore the same helmet for both the 2013 Australian and Malaysian GPs but then randomly had this helmet in between them, I wonder if he felt it was too plain or there was some issue? Idk
