it's fascinating to me the way that different social media platforms result in different types of fandom behavior. while s5 of tma was airing, I spent a good amount of time on tma tiktok (I log back in about once every two months now, going back to in-person school after a year a half of lockdown seem to re-blanace my brain and made me once again not really enjoy the format) while still using tumblr as my main socmed, and while there was a lot of overlap in the fan culture, some things were notably different.
tumblr tma fans had near-encyclopedic knowledge of the source material, but it was kind of an ongoing joke for tiktok tma fans that everyone binged the whole show in a week-long fugue state and lost memory of about 35% of it. tumblr has virtually no character limit and allows posts to be passed around by users indefinitely, which lends itself to fairly in-depth meta analysis being made and shared until most any fan could say "the time and space discrepancies at hill top road? psh yeah, I know all about them, I've read seven scrupulously cited posts that lay out all the details." for the entire time that s5 was airing, tiktok videos could still only be a minute long, and I know from a lot of personal effort that there's only so much you can fit into a one minute script that you also have to memorize and record (and cc manually with tiktok text stickers, as they didn't add the caption feature until april 2021) if you want the process to take less than four hours of your one mortal human life. and then you only see the video if your following or fyp algorithm shows it to you. there were a few tma meta-ish videos that got popular because other people would make their own videos referencing them and tag the account so their followers could see what they were talking about, but it's much harder to circulate content you like there. several times I saw people post videos saying "I got into cosplay to film some [agnes or annabelle or gerry or another secondary character] and I just realized I have no idea what their deal actually is 💀".
a thing that tiktok tma fandom was definitely better at than tumblr tma fandom was accurately remembering certain pieces of characterization and the flow of certain scenes. I've seen a bunch of posts on here where someone is trying to argue a point with excerpts from the text ("x character is nicer than you all give them credit for" "x character is so mean to y character in this scene" "z theory can't be true because y character said a line that disproves it") where the argument only holds up because the poster has gotten these excerpts from a transcript dive and hasn't listened to the episodes they're from recently, because while the text alone can be construed to mean one thing, the way it's delivered on-podcast clearly intends another. tiktok, being an audio and video based medium, allows audio clips to be shared around a lot, and cosplayers would often all make videos acting along to the same show clips of juicy interpersonal drama, and so tiktok fans, though they may have had less overall memory of what characters said, always had a better grasp on how they said it. an average tiktok tma fan might not have remembered melanie's subplot about war ghosts, but they would know the nuances of how the way she talks to jon changes between mag 28 and mag 155.

[[Image description: a banner with the Palestinian flag with overlaid text that reads "Heathens for Palestine."]]
Some Things We in the United States Can Do:
Contact your elected officials and demand the immediate halt of financial/military support to Israel, and a permanent ceasefire. Identify and contact your governor, congress members, senators, and the White House.
Donate to organizations like the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund, World Central Kitchen, and others.
Amplify Palestinian voices. Reblog/retweet/share their content.
Attend rallies and protests if you are able to do so.
DO NOT LET THE MOMENTUM FADE.
Some Things We as Heathens Can Do:
Continuously challenge, and refuse to tolerate, Islamophobia anywhere but especially within heathen spaces.
Offer prayers to Freyja, Odin, Tyr, and Thor for the safety and victory of the Palestinian people.
Create bindrunes, rituals, or prayers that help you balance your anger with self-care. Fight the fight as much as you can, but know when it's time to recharge/regroup.
Hávamál 155: For the eleventh I know, if I have to lead my friends to battle, under their shields I sing, and with power they go safe to the fight, safe from the fight; safe on every side they go.

Dp x dc idea 155
Dani after leaving Danny again takes time goes exploring. She still texts Danny and bugs him. He keeps raving about space to her. Just like she did about other countries and her travel plans.
So she went to space. Took a few pics and sent them off.
She didn’t expect to start destabilizing. Not the turning too goo. Not the man in green cosplay to come to her aid.
Danny for his part. Just got a picture of earth from space!!! He should go fly up there. Needless to say he was most certainly not expecting green lantern to show up at his door. That was the least of his concerns tho.
Danni was melting.

(EDIT: Updated to a permanent link in case anyone else wants to hop in!)
Okay the platonic/aroace DCA discord server is finally ready and you are welcome to join!
The server link can be found here: https://discord.gg/UctMQFY2XA
Star Bench (name kindly volunteered by the wonderful @melanirana ) is a server made by me and @flinxypie for platonic DCA chatter and fun times - for those of us who enjoy them more as silly little guys getting up to their own sorts of mischief, those of us who do self-ship with them or ship them with y/ns or OCs/other characters and would prefer to focus less on the romantic or spicy aspects of that, those of us who love that type of content but just want an excuse to gush about the jesters platonically, and every one of us who wants to be besties or partners in crime with them, or simply face them in combat! Simply put, if the DCA is your blorbo and you want to share your enjoyment of them without the romance and the spice, this is the place for you, please make yourselves at home!

ok. chainsaw man chapter 155 tatsuki fujimoto rips my heart out of my chest edition.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
makima’s search for intimacy in p1 mirrors denji’s. this search is their shared dream, a dream which is negotiated by their respective ideals: the girlfriend that denji wishes for, the Chainsaw Man makima “sought.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
both these ideals for them signifies in essence a deviation from the lives they both lead (first image set: carted to and fro from their meetings with the yakuza/the higher ups, the ones they’re enslaved to) in both a luxury and love denji never allows himself, a freedom and a chaotic that’s anthitetical to makima’s own performance of order.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and this for fujimoto is something that permeates all his text, this subversion of what is signified by connection, by family and intimacy, ultimately dragging you into the same cycle, chaining you to it. it’s agni & luna in fire punch: their love for each other being what makes them carve up their bodies, extending to togata (also existing in idealisation) who frames and directs the Story (the structure) in an effort to feel intimacy.
and here too: denji’s idea of partnership creates Versions of makima for him: her girlishness, her, presented. and makima’s vision of Chainsaw Man informs denji’s own reality.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this Chainsaw Man runs over into part 2 as does makima. and nayuta, concentrated in how she reforms makima, is specifically family. the very family makima concocted for denji as vessels for happiness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
family and happiness, context based connection are what immerses you in structure. unbalancing this utterly iconizes you. the icon makima hoped to create with this rupture was the Chainsaw Man. she tells him that he is incapable of normality because he killed his family, and in this chapter he tells himself that – she aims to author this rupture with her concoction of family but she herself is so intertwined in it. nayuta’s Makima in part 2 is this very intimacy, this family. the thing makima too craves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and do you see here? the cycle? the way this worth in connection is what makes nayuta sacrifice herself for denji? togata sacrifice himself for agni? aki sacrifice himself for the hayakawa family as people cheer on the chainsaw man? the way in the end the rupture is self inflicted, the icon is self formed, and the protagonist is left forming context out of nothing? how so many of fujimoto’s relationships build upon idealisation of the other?
do you see here? the way they’ve all made dogs out of each other? denji holding pochita close, denji the dog. makima the dog, and the pets she dotes upon. nayuta and denji, walking the dogs together: they’re the culmination of the two’s part one relationship, the fulfillment of all their wishes in each other, and yet, yet
yet barem. the Dead Wife barem. building a mockery, a reproduction of makima’s self onto himself, tearing away homes, contexts to force them all back into this cycle. i said he didn’t understand the intimacy she wanted when i called him the Dead Wife to makima’s performance of Woman. the Woman, forever iconicised, obsessed over, suspected, subjugated…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the question: “who am i?” answered through context (family, connection) not identity intrinsic to oneself. dreams as dreamt through each other, “make my dreams come true for me!” denji tells pochita next to wanting him to live a normal life in his body. makima in the end, wanting to eat together, live together with the CSM, smoking a cigarette (uncharacteristic) in the graveyard.
all of part 2 then, cast over by this shadow. asa, navigating both solitude and connection through war. parasocial relationships. yuko becoming Justice for asa. the theatre scene, aspiration on screen viewed alongside the response of the person next to you. and asa in the orphanage, told that she can’t have a family, that she must exist decontextualised – and now structure, hunger, reproduction doing just that, part 2's deconstruction to part 1's construction, ripping it all away, backing you into this cycle.

“A woman’s face with nature’s own hand painted / Hast thou, the master-mistress of my passion”

Lines from the poem Sonnet 20 by William Shakespeare (1609) one of his texts most noted for the theme of sexual ambiguity, and the sculpture Sleeping Hermaphroditus, an Imperial Roman copy of a Hellenistic original by Polycles (circa. 155 BC) rediscovered during the early 1600s and subsequently accented with a marble pillow sculpted by Bernini in 1620; now housed in The Louvre, Paris.

Best Pokémon Protagonist Tournament- Stats Breakdown!
After many weeks of voting, we concluded that Tumblr's favourite Protagonist is Akari- but we still have a lot of other data to sift through that we can learn from! Read more to find out about the most and least popular matches, the averages, and maybe most importantly- who won the biggest sweep?
As usual, let's start with the total number of votes across the whole tournament. This time it was 15,433 votes over 25 matches for an average 617 votes per match- slightly lower than our last tournament (20,353 total and 727 average) but still the second most popular tournament we've run. If you include the preliminaries, however, the total number of votes increases to 21,204 over 35 matches and 1 tiebreaker- an average of 589.
Next up, a look at the average votes a contestant brought in- who was a bigger draw than the others? Who inspired the most enthusiastic voting? When we rank them, this is how it stacks up:
Hilda- 494 (2,472 votes across 5 matches)
Akari- 461 (2,304 votes across 5 matches)
Dawn- 374 (1,868 votes across 5 matches)
Serena- 330 (989 votes across 3 matches)
May- 328 (1,641 votes across 5 matches)
Rosa- 319 (958 votes across 3 matches)
Hilbert- 315 (631 votes across 2 matches)
Red- 314 (629 votes across 2 matches)
Gloria- 310 (930 votes across 3 matches)
Lyra- 308 (617 votes across 2 matches)
Kris- 278 (278 votes in 1 match)
Leaf- 248 (248 votes in 1 match)
Ethan- 234 (234 votes in 1 match)
Selene- 223 (223 votes in 1 match)
Lucas- 209 (209 votes in 1 match)
Rei- 189 (189 votes in 1 match)
Juliana- 155 (155 votes in 1 match)
Elio- 139 (139 votes in 1 match)
Nate- 125 (125 votes in 1 match)
Brendan- 112 (112 votes in 1 match)
Chase- 109 (109 votes in 1 match)
Calem & Elaine- 103 (103 votes in 1 match each)
Victor- 88 (88 votes in 1 match)
Florian- 80 (80 votes in 1 match)
Through this ranking, we can get a general idea of the top ten (according to our voters anyway), and yes, as we all observed in the tournament, the girls are far more popular! 80% of the top 10 are ladies, and only 2 men are in the top half at all- 3 if you include Ethan sitting in exactly the middle.
Of specific note, the top 3 are indeed our medal winners, though Hilda and Akari are swapped in position- and we're about to see that same phenomenom in the next list. And poor Florian sits at the bottom, only 80 votes to his name, proving beyond a doubt that the girls are more popular when his counterpart who wears the exact same outfit sits several places higher in 17th.
Okay! On to average vote share. When comparing our contestants, who- on average anyway- took home the biggest proportion of the votes within their matches? And yes, I've already given you a little spoiler about our top two.
Hilda- 68.7%
Akari- 67.7%
Gloria- 64%
Dawn- 60.1%
May- 56.8%
Rosa- 56.4%
Hilbert- 54.3%
Lyra- 53.4%
Serena- 52.5%
Red- 44.7%
Leaf- 42.9%
Kris- 42.4%
Lucas- 40.9%
Rei- 38.7%
Ethan- 35.3%
Selene- 35.2%
Elio- 29.4%
Nate- 21%
Chase- 19.7%
Brendan- 19%
Elaine- 17.9%
Victor- 17.8%
Calem- 17.2%
Florian- 16.5%
Juliana- 16.1%
With a few notable differences, this list is largely similar to the last- in fact our top 10 are identical, albeit with the rankings shifted around a bit. Dawn loses her 3rd place spot to Gloria, and Red is barely hanging on to the 10th spot, but he's still there!
As I mentioned before, Hilda tops this list, not Akari- it seems increasingly clear that with how popular she is, only Akari could've beaten her for that gold medal! Down at the other end though, Florian manages not to be last, this time only losing to his female counterpart- perhaps the girls aren't always popular after all? But it's hard to argue against the same proportion of boys in the top half as before- only 2 (with that coveted middle spot now going to Lucas instead of Ethan).
Now time for my one and only graph! I think it's nice to have some data in a visual form, but I try and keep the important stuff in text form so it's easy to read and more accurate. But here's our lovely pie chart of what proportion of the total tournament votes each contestant got.
Tumblr media
Last but by no means least, it's time for individual match stats.
The most voted on match was Round 1: Match 8, Juliana vs Hilda, with 964 votes- just shy of 1,000. Closely following behind it was the finals, with 939 votes. On the other end, the least voted on poll (outside of the preliminaries, which had on average lower votes anyway) was Round 3: Match 3, May vs Gloria, with 483 votes. With only 3 votes more at 486, was Round 2: Match 7, Florian vs Hilda.
Individually, the person to gain the most votes in a single poll was Hilda, once again in that Round 1 match where she got 809 votes! Poor Florian in his Round 2 match got only 80 votes, however- the least in a single match.
The last thing we always look at is margins. For the closest match this competition, we look to Round 2: Match 3, Red vs Lyra. While it shares the exact same 4.6% margin as the final match did, the vote margin was smaller, with only 30 votes separating them (compared to 43 in the finals).
And now- the biggest sweep. Here we specifically look at margins, not votes, but in this case it's one and the same. The match we keep mentioning- Round 1: Match 8- ended in a huge 67.8% margin, or 654 votes. Hilda may not have won the gold in the tournament porper, but she absolutely swept the competition in these stats, and earns herself a spot in the biggest sweep hall of fame.
After all that, we're finally finished. Thank you so much for sticking around through this competition, and I can't wait to see you back here again soon for the next one! Currently a poll is up to decide what that tournament will be, so don't forget to vote and share it, and we'll be back with more polls very soon!

On your post about reinventing Damian from thirteen stories you said that tma has "two, maybe four trans characters depending on how you look at it"
I know about alexia and frances who are the other two?
saur, alexia is definitely trans because she refers to herself as trans within her episode, and francis is definitely trans because they are referred to in the third person with they/them pronouns dozens of times. those are the two certifiable trans characters.
for the two other potential trans characters--okay, this requires a bit of background. to the best of my knowledge, the official descriptions when the episodes got uploaded to podcast platforms were not written by jonny, they were written by anil godigamuwe, the former rusty quill community manager, and in transferring over the statement summaries he would sometimes flip some pronouns around and use neutral language to refer to characters who were gendered within the episodes themselves. ex., within mag 57, the statement summary says "statement of carter chilcott, regarding his time spent in isolation aboard the space station daedalus," but the description on acast reads "statement of carter chilcott, regarding their time spent in isolation aboard the space station daedalus."
when the description for mag 132 referred to the archivst with a they pronoun, jonny clarified that this wasn't meant to be reflective of anything canonical within the text, so that's how I approach most of these instances. however, the spoken in-episode statement summaries for mag 148 and mag 155 both refer to sunil maraj and tova mchugh with they/them pronouns, though when jon continues to talk about them at the end he calls sunil "mr maraj" and uses he/him and calls tova "ms mchugh" and uses she/her. eye of the beholder nonbinary people, really. do those summaries have no wider meaning? are sunil and tova both multi pronoun users? did jon not notice their pronouns and casually misgender them in his notes? the world may never know.
