Pens!

While I'm talking of hyperobsessions, I've acquired what feels like a lot of fountain pens in one way or another across the last nine months. I know I could get one "good" pen for the total of all these (the most expensive was $110, although two were inherited), but a) they are great ink holders b) it's a bit like my perfume wardrobe, it's fun picking which I use at any one time and c) I'n still figuring out what I like best, and I don't have access to many to try at shops.

Not going to list them all, but:

Biggest failures: a "red" (pink) Jinhao 200. Lessons learned: I really like slightly translucent resin with different colours, holy hell that thing is pretty. BUT if a review mentions "slightly slippery section", or in fact has a metal section at all, no matter how glorious the pen looks otherwise, I'm not going to use it. A cheap way to learn that lesson. It's SO pretty, though, and if I ever used it I'd want the brown and ivory as well.

Mum's burgundy, 14K nib Parker... 61? (not entirely sure) she so sweetly gifted me. It had been her 18th birthday present from Dad, who had saved up for ages. Lessons learned: light-weight "slim" pens, "junior" pens and "pens for ladies" are a really bad idea, because my hand cramps. (My wife's Parker Jotter confirms this.) This pen is also finicky, but I'm going to try it with a wetter ink. Also not sold on the hooded nib.

My favourites so far are a 1940s hard rubber/ebonite Summit pen. (Actually my pen, photo from seller). Learned: I love ebonite, I love soft flexible vintage gold nibs, I love thick pens... I don't love having a limited range of safe inks and not being able to dissassemble and clean, but the rest of the experience is just lovely.

My Dad's Sheaffer 727 Triumph Imperial Stylist, (not my pen but the photo I identified it from), rolled gold and 14K nib (but much stiffer and finer than the Summit), also sweetly gifted. Just feels luxurious and satisfying to write with. The extra weight makes it much more comfortable than the Parker 61, although it's not MUCH thicker. Could still do with it being thicker.

And cheap and cheerful: Kaweco Perkeo and Lamy Safari. I love the bright colours and pleasant feeling Lego brick plastic (better than the softer plastic grip io my Al-Star), and let's face it, I love the triangular holds for students that make you hold it in the right place. Why don't expensive pens have these? The Perkeo, btw, is my wife's favourite, she has two now.

Also cheap and cheerful but feels weirdly expensive to use: Moonman C1 So lovely and thick! I love seeing the ink in it and the huge capacity. And the resin is so smooth and beautiful, I really didn't think clear plastic could look that nice.

Things I still really want to try: vintage striated plastic, Indian ebonite and acrylic pens, Japanese extra fines.

And then maybe I will finally know what MY kind of pen is, and start saving for something really special.

Credit Where Credit is Due

Everyone likes to be given credit for their work, especially artists. As artists we need accreditation of our work to advertise our skills to potential employers and well as provide proof of the work we have made on our portfolio.  At the end of any movie you’ll see the full list of names of the production team who made the film possible and in most modern video games you will see the same format of accreditation for their development team, however that used to not always be the case. In the early history of video games those who worked on the game’s development generally went unrecognized for their work since only the company that published the game would be attributed for the game that was created. This practice was pretty standard until a man named Trip Hawkins started the gaming company we now know as Electronic Arts, or EA for short. The former Apple employee Hawkins saw the importance of developers to gaming and to gaming companies and because of this there was a great deal of effort put into giving credit to developers, who Hawkins always referred to as artists, such as giving them photo credits within the games and full-page magazine ads and they were compensated lavishly in comparison to other developers of the time. EA was the first video game publisher to run an ad that featured software developers in 1983, their ad was accompanied by the slogan ‘We See Farther’. Hawkins referred to developers as artists because he felt that game development was an art form, hence the company name Electronic Arts, however at the time this opinion was not the most popular one. Hawkins had several goals for the games EA published, he wanted to shift the public opinion that computer games were a worthwhile medium and to present computer games as attractive in professional and unique packaging. The packaging of one of the first games EA published (Pinball Construction Set,1983) was reminiscent of record album packaging with polished cover art and this was done to give the game a more ‘artistic’ feel as well as framing their game developers as rock stars. The packaging included a greatly expanded instructions manual and was met with very positive feedback. Of the first six games EA initially launched three of them would eventually make the Computer Gaming World Hall of Fame, and a fourth would land on multiple best seller lists.

Although EA may be known now for expensive DLC and pay to win game models, in its inception EA’s company mindset of putting emphasis on giving credit and properly compensating the talent that creates games and approaching game design in a more professional and artistic point of view led to serious shifts in game design practices, more creative game marketing, and very unique and iconic packaging and they will go down in gaming history as revolutionaries that greatly influenced computer games and the video game industry as a whole.
