Fic Rec: 'An Anchor' by @themegalosaurus (SPN, Dean/Sam, Explicit)

I had a sudden urge to read fics based on episode 12x09 First Blood (the one with the solitary confinement) because there is so much angst fruit to be plucked from that whump tree. I didn't find a whole lot (devvo), but there were some. This is the first one I read. It doesn't refer to the ep too specifically, but holy shit it's a good fic. Highly recommend.

in the Beginning, the Angel came to life and knew one Name: Winchester

the Angel hates Earth, He hates Earth but He loves the Hunters and humanity that created Them

He tucks Himself into the backseat of the Impala and sinks to His knees, traces a fingertip across the crudely etched initials and pours a piece of the stolen Grace sitting next to His soul into them

Castiel prays, makes sacrifices to Them, carves open Reaper’s chest in Their name

He looks at each Them and gives Himself to Them

spits out between His teeth, “You made a stupid deal and I broke it.”

‘You are too precious to Me’ sits in the air, bloody and raw and dirty in a way that would make Crowley turn his nose up at it

There's no way Dean didn't pray to Cas in episode 12x09 when he and Sam were isolated in that governmental jail. I refuse to believe it. They didn't show it to us, they didn't say anything about it. But listen to me. There's NO FUCKING WAY he didn't.

They didn't show us because it wasn't relevant to the story like it was in episode 6x06. We learned that Dean called Cas for help about soulless!sam but we didn't see him, but they tell us he did because that's relevant for him to yell at Cas in that scene for not coming when he calls. And same in Purgatory we learn that Dean prayed to Cas every night, we don't know what he said in these prayers but they tell us he prayed because this is relevant, it leads to Cas explaining why he never answered those prayers.

So my point is that in episode 12x09 they didn't tell us he prayed to Cas because there was no purpose for the story, but HE DID. He prayed to him because he felt alone and that's also why Cas seems so lost and helpless. Because he can hear Dean, he can hear him but can't answer, he can hear him not knowing where they are kept. He can hear him ask for help without being able to do so.

Somewhere in the dead of my Tumblr lies long-winded rambling about Dean calling Cas in 12x09 First Blood.

It was soooooooo…

“Sooner the better. We’re on a clock here.”

…a last-ditch effort by Dean to see Cas, one last time. Dean knew he was gonna die, and the chances of Cas finding him along that stretch of road were fantastically bleak for the both of them.

Dean is saying, hurry-hurry-hurry-please-just-get-here-please.

Pretty damn long. Four hours just to drive that stretch of road in CO from Granby to Wray, and that doesn’t count getting there.

2x01: John leans over to whisper to Dean, laying in a hospital bed. After a moment, Dean jerks back slightly to look at him, shocked. John moves away from him slowly, crying a little, but looking serious. Dean blinks.

14x20: Sam sits on Dean’s bed, across from him. He stutters a bit from emotion, asking, “Now y– you want my permission? You want me to say I– I’m cool with losing him? And losing you, all at once?”

12x09: Dean sits next to Castiel in the backseat, he asks Mary, “So, wait, you’ve been hunting?” She’s driving and she shrugs slightly, answering, “A little bit...” Sam sits in the passenger seat and laughs a little, telling her knowingly, “I knew you couldn’t stay away.” They share a look, and Sam smiles.
