Thinking a lot about Dean's response to Sam leaving for Stanford.

He's angry. He's so, so angry, because Sam leaving feels like a personal betrayal of him and everything they've been through together.

How could Sam just... go? How could he leave him here?

Alone, because sure, he has dad - but he never had dad like he had his Sammy.

When he initially leaves, Dean just sort of tries to power through. He's desperate to show that he can do it, that he can function fine without Sam at his side.

Dad benches him. Says he's being too wreckless after Dean tosses himself in front of a raging spirit.

He's right. He's right, and Dean knows why he's doing it even if he was determined not to admit it to anyone including himself.

He doesn't care anymore. He doesn't care about staying alive, because staying alive feels empty. Sam left, and it's like he took a solid chunk of Dean with him. He's just... drifting. Hunting, the family buisness, it all feels pointless.

Dad says they do it for Mary. To avenge her, for revenge for that night, whatever.

But with Sam gone, Dean rapidly realises that's not why he did it.

He did it to protect Sammy. He had to eliminate nearby threats to make sure Sam was safe.

He splits off from dad for a good while and starts exclusively taking cases in California, around Stanford and Sam's prissy little apartment with his perfect little girlfriend.

He avoids Sam. He wonders if he feels the emptiness too, but then he sees him kissing Jess or holding her hand and it leaves a bitter, resounding no in his chest.

Sam may loose everything that day Dean finally has to seek him out again, but for the first time in years Dean feels whole.
