A non-serious attempt at comedy/list about what your favourite incarnation of the Master says about you:

Roger Delgado: They just like more dialogue and richer themes in your storyline, preferring character interaction and chemistry rather than spectacle. They also make sure their outfits are neat, stylish and elegant. Always colour co-ordinated. Usually quite calm and collected until you say Terror of the Autons is just a remake of Spearhead From Space.

Peter Pratt: Basically a Fourth Doctor fan who refuses to admit there are flaws with The Deadly Assassin or a fan of horror films. More than likely grew up in the seventies. Definitely looks into their KFC bucket and sees lots of little Masters staring back at them.

Geoffrey Beevers: Basically the same as the Pratt fan, although this one refuses to admit there are flaws in the Fourth Doctor's era as a whole. If you tell them Tom Baker stayed on for too long, prepare to have your intestines made into a scarf. Usually forgets about 90% of the plot of Logopolis. Almost certainly a child of the 70s, hence why they see this Master in the mirror each morning.

Anthony Ainley: Likes to just have fun, no matter how corny or wierd the stories are. Will happily just sit and watch the Master basically trolling the Doctor with minor inconveniences, waiting for the inevitable moment when that character hovering in the background with a not-quite-as-clearly-defined backstory pulls off a mask and wig to reveal a goatee. Is somehow able to enjoy Time Flight. Do not ask them their opinion on the TV Movie.

Eric Roberts: A legend amongst humans. Saw the campy, over-the-top dressing gown/robe, the bad cgi snakes, the wierd terminator references and thought "yes, this is clearly the best one." Constantly annoys purist classic series fans simply by existing and does not care. Knows the TV Movie is mid and does not care. Knows that the Eye of Harmony was originally on Gallifrey and does not care. Has definitely said "I always... dress for the occasion" and does not care that no-one gets the reference.

Derek Jacobi: Sold their soul to Big Finish for the War Master range. Religiously watches Utopia to see that reveal again, and wishes Chantho had been fully fried before shooting the Master. Now all they can do is offer sacrifices to Nicholas Briggs and sit in a darkened room, staring at the Big Finish website.

John Simm: Probably has fan art saved to their phone, and has almost certainly read Ten/Master fanfiction at some point. Will defend Last of the Time Lords and The End of Time Part 1 with their dying breath (and for good reason, those episodes slap and those two slightly dodgy scenes don't ruin them, Moffat did worse retcons, fight me). Cried when their Master showed up in The Doctor Falls and usually has good relations with Missy fans because of it. Thinks Sacha Dhawan is a lazy rip-off. Can usually be found comforting the Jacobi fan after their War Master box set has been delayed.

Michelle Gomez: Basically the same as the Simm fan, only this one defends the Moffat era and their fanfiction search history is a bit more varied. Thinks Death in Heaven was a good episode, and that The Doctor Falls should have been the last Master episode. Hates Chibnall for bulldozing all their character development and rendering this incarnation's redemption slightly pointless. Usually slightly more forward-thinking than some other fans and great with their friends. Has formed an unlikely alliance with Delgado fans... somehow.

Sacha Dhawan: Took one look at the most quirked up Master and decided that was the one. Thinks John Simm was OK, but lacked the "evil four-year-old on a sugar rush" energy of this one. Usually bitter rivals with Missy fans, as everyone started re-evaluating the Moffat era instead of watching S12, and will go strangely quiet whenever the Timeless Child is mentioned, praying that someone will say that it should have been the Master and thus giving them a "get out of jail" card. Was absolutely overjoyed when people enjoyed Power of the Doctor. Convinced that the Chibnall Era will receive a massive reappraisal in the future, despite the fact that the odds of that happening are about the same as the Terry Nation estate accepting that the Daleks are overused.

Alex Maqueen: Sold everything to Big Finish. Doesn't even watch the show. Can't watch the show. Who needs the show when you've just spent all your month's wages on that box set? It's not like you need to eat or anything. The most likely individual to end up in a padded cell when someone doesn't know what Dark Eyes was.

Gina McKee: Missy fans, but with small social circles and a heavy dose of Weezer.

Mark Gatiss, James Dreyfus, Milo Parker: Wait, these guys played the Master?

The Future of The Ward Legacy

First; I am not stopping, but I am, remaking. The main reason is that I have wanted to move the story out of the Sims universe and free it from the "constraints" of the game itself. I have been trying to keep on writing the story here, the ones you see posted, and then find time and energy to work on the rewrite that I basically just began. I have however come to the simple conclusion, that unlike so many others on here who manage to tell several stories, I have to focus my non-existent energy most days on one thing. And I have chosen to want to rewrite the story. What that means is that my current queue (that runs until May 9th next year..) will run along like normal, while I focus my mind and energy on getting the rewrite going, and when that final post is done, I hope to have enough ready to start posting chapters on WordPress, and then link to them here. I don't think I will post it in any other way here. The images for my story will still be done with Sims so, I will still share screenshots, etc here like I am now, but they will just be the same as now, silly for fun kinda deal.

I know WordPress and longer reads are not for most anymore, but I want to do it that way, so I am! I'm enjoying writing it, as bad as I might be, but heck, I can only get better right?

quick scribbles for effective sites of material struggle

I've been thinking about effective sites of political struggle. Where can we focus our efforts to build power and resist oppression? Let's explore that.

Care work: We should struggle to distribute the work of making and remaking people. Childcare, at-home healthcare, cooking, cleaning, emotional support, and other generally unpaid and unrecognized forms of labor should be done by all who have the ability.

The DIY Scene: We should create and expand the spaces of creative impulse, from punk scenes, to rap scenes, to maker spaces, to art classes. All creative stuff. By carrying these inclinations to their logical conclusion, we can employ creative production toward liberatory aims.

Solidarity Unions: We all have to work to live, whether or not we agree with capitalism. Dreaming of capital wealth, we can put mutualism at the forefront. Collaborating horizontally in workplaces can improve worker conditions while creating fertility for post-capitalism.

Tenant Organizing: Similarly to workplaces, we should organize our living situations through a non-hierarchical lens. Resisting gentrification, nimbyism and yimbyism, and evictions will allow us to build more community resiliency.

Geographies and Built Environments: One of the things that folks forget most is the physical ways that our oppressive societies exist. Involving radical alternatives to urbanism, architecture, and geography can allow us to reimagine physical spaces, creating natural harmony.

Environmentalism: None of this work matters without adequate responses to climate calamity. It is already here for many of us, and those numbers will only grow. Having an awareness of why climate change happens, and how to prepare for collapses is paramount.

Policing: Police are not useful if you're not a capitalist. If we can learn to keep ourselves safe, we can make them even more obsolete. Replacing our sham of a justice system with transformative justice and community care is what we need.

Are there other areas of struggle that folks need to put energy into? I approached this from the perspective of ways that people can start right now that can yield big wins if successful.

Thai BL Favorites List Tag Game

thank youuu mel @justafriend-ql for tagging me!!! And to @thatgirl4815 for creating it!

I’m so bad at picking favorites so please excuse the fact that I have like two answers per question.. since this is a Thai bl list I’m not listing gls or non Thai series or else I’d probably list like 3+ per question fnskfjfj

Favorite bl: bad buddy or not me (PLEASE DONT MAKE ME CHOOSE). They’re both very different but very important in their own ways. The bad buddy experience is incomparable and the beauty of not me and its basis in reality is historical

Favorite pairing: following suit, patpran & seanwhite. Both series weren’t just plot driven, they were character driven as well (possibly more so). Each are fantastic, though wildly different, romances.

Most underrated actor: my boy chimon! I think generally people know he can act but I wouldn’t be surprised if he gained more recognition after dangerous romance aired. (Also bonus, stealing Mel’s answer cuz sing always needs more attention he can do any and everything!! I’ll eat up any role he plays. I always do)

Favorite character: really hard to choose. maybe Sean (from not me again). I’m ngl I blocked someone once bc they talked a bit of shit abt him. He’s never done anything wrong in his life <3

Favorite side character: yok from not me. I’m gonna keep putting not me here srry but NO ONE will ever be as slutty as yok was. Not even First in only friends. He encapsulated Slut energy in such an immaculate way. (OR heartliming. They stole the show in moonlight chicken for me!)

Favorite scene: the pride flag scene from not me. It’s one of the most impactful scenes I’ve seen in any ql and I love the reason why it exists in the first place!

Favorite line: the build up to patpran’s rooftop kiss. Got me holding my breath screaming crying heart racing you know it. We’ve all been through it. I have it copied into my notes in case I ever need it (or just to. Cry idk)

Most anticipated bl and why: hmmm probably cooking crush literally just cuz of offgun in a romcom bl lmao I luv them. The pics they’ve uploaded lately have had a different vibe from the mock trailer and I’m liking it! Maybe cherry magic too as I’m curious to see how it’ll be adapted to Thailand as a remake

Healthiest relationship in a bl: patpran. Do I even need to say more? They might’ve had a little drama before they got together but you HAVE to have a healthy mf relationship to maintain it while “lying” saying you’ve broken up to your parents & some of ur friends

Most toxic relationship in a bl: vegaspete. See they’re lowkey more toxic in my head than they are on screen. Like yes vegas electrocuted Pete’s balls but he could’ve done worse and I think he should’ve! The toxic aspect was what made it fun (also who would I be if they didn’t make it on a fav Thai bl list at least Once)

Guilty pleasure series: idk what I’d consider a guilty pleasure BUT I thought the first episode of tharntype (which I actually only watched recently lmao) was kinda camp. Like it literally OPENS with Type saying he loves college except for one problem�� GAY PEOPLE EXIST 😡🤬 that’s comedy. I burst out laughing. Can’t say I love the show as a whole tho

Most underrated series (mel I love that u added this bc I kno exactly what to say): SECRET CRUSH ON YOU. I NEED TO PROMOTE IT. I think people who dropped it did so bc it was so over the top but that’s exactly why you should keep going??? It’s SO saturated and the emotions are ALWAYS at 100 it’s hilarious but in the moments it gets emotional (episode 13…) it GOES ALL IN!!! The constant secondhand embarrassment made me literally start sweating but in a good way?? Ppl who reduce it to just cringe have missed all the beauty it offers. I regret not watching it live and I feel like I don’t see enough people talking about it… also I am literally toh <3

Surprisingly some of my beloved Thai bls didn’t make it onto this list but it seems that’s cuz I still have bad buddy/not me brain worms forever 🙃 I stand by what I said either way hehe

OH billiewena, one of my favorite pairings!!!! Not gonna lie, keeping this one short was a challenge because post canon billiewena makes me want to write a whole fix it fic BUT I hope I did them justice in this short fic.

Billie and Rowena share a moment together at the end of the world. Read on AO3 or under the cut.

The reshaping of a universe without Chuck would take time, is taking time, did take time and also took no time at all. Time had to be reinvented during the reshaping of the cosmos and it took centuries and it took milliseconds and it is still taking place and has been taking place since before Chuck came into existence.

Billie, as a being of the cosmos, can feel all the other cosmic beings reworking their way through the strings of creation and she can also feel one cosmic being who is uncharacteristically still among the frantic busyness of a universe being remade.

Rowena, ruler of Hell, is sitting along the coastline of St. Ninian’s Isle, sipping a carefully brewed cup of tea. She’s in a rocking chair on a porch looking out towards the coastline off in the distance. (The entire residence will be undone in the remaking of the new world; in fact, it has already been undone.) It’s overcast but not currently raining, with enough of a chill in the air that a human might be bothered by it.

“You’re having a cup of tea at the end of the world?” Billie asks her, appearing by her side.

“There’s nothing a nice wee cup of tea can’t fix,” the queen of hell responds, calmly taking a sip. “It’s Scottish blend, the finest. Do you think it will taste different after all of this is done?”

“To us, yes,” Billie replies. “To the humans, probably not.”

Rowena sighs, “Another lovely thing lost to the passage of time.”

“More like the restructuring of time,” Billie says.

“Would you care to stay and watch for a while?” Rowena asks her.

Billie moves to stand beside Rowena in her rocking chair, looking off into the distance in the same direction Rowena does.

“I don’t suppose you’d care for some?” Rowena asks, indicating the mug in her hands.

“Human creature comforts aren’t really…my thing,” Billie says, raising an eyebrow.

“They used to be my thing,” Rowena sighs. “All I ever wanted was…”

“To be unkillable and to have every comfort in the world,” Billie finishes for her.

“That’s not too much to ask, is it?” Rowena asks primly, taking another sip of tea.

“What’s troubling you, Rowena?” Billie asks. She can feel Rowena’s energy, so still among a universe of movement. The only stagnant area in the whole of existence right now is this quiet moment Rowena has manufactured.

“Every particle in the universe is changing and most people won’t even notice the difference,” Rowena says softly.

“You’ve seen a lot—for a human,” Billie says.

“I’m not a human any longer,” Rowena sighs.

“Do you wish you still were?” Billie’s never been human but she knows how sentimental they can be, she can feel all living things deeply through their connection to death. “You’re more powerful now than you ever were before.”

“No amount of power can make you happy. I learned that over the years,” Rowena says. “And my son…he sacrificed himself rather than stay in the role I currently have.”

“That doesn’t really answer my question,” Billie says.

“No one can stay a human forever,” Rowena replies, eyes distant as she looks towards the coastline. “Not even in this new, hopefully better world. I suppose my post human life is better than others.”

Billie refrains from pointing out that that answer is still a non-answer and instead she says, “This is different to the creation of the world and yet—still so similar.”

“You’ve seen a lot—for a reaper,” Rowena says.

“I’m not a reaper anymore,” Billie says.

“Do you wish you still were?” Rowena asks, taking another sip of her tea.

“Being Death is…different,” Billie shrugs. “Sometimes there’s no better or worse. Things just are the way they are.”

“Like my becoming queen of hell,” Rowena says, the tea cup in her right hand gently clinking as it hits the saucer in her left hand. “Though I suppose the transition was easier for you.”

“Perhaps not,” Billie says.

“It wasn’t easier for you?” Rowena asks. “Aren’t reapers and Death made of the same…stuff? You feel similar to your reapers.”

“I suppose it's true we were made from the same cosmic powers,” Billie says. “We are connected but we are not…one. And being Death it’s…the grand scheme of things is clearer. I’m no longer a reaper working as a single cog in the mechanism of fate. Now I’m…”

“The engineer sent to fix the mechanism of fate?” Rowena suggests.

“Hm, I suppose that’s an apt enough metaphor,” Billie says.

“And that’s hard for you? Hard enough that you think this change was easier for me?”

“Human beings…they’re in a constant state of flux,” Billie muses. "For a human to become something that is no longer human is just another change for you in your ever changing lives.”

“You thought you’d be a reaper forever,” Rowena says sympathetically.

“I’ve been a reaper since before this world was born, I always thought I’d be a reaper when it ended,” Billie says quietly.

Rowena sets her teacup down and stands up. Moving close to her, she gently places her hand on Billie’s face, her thumb stroking Billie’s cheekbone. Billie can feel her energy reaching out and Billie sighs a bit and allows Rowena in. Rowena had been one of the most powerful humans Billie had ever met but she had still been human. Now, as ruler of hell, she’s made of something more celestial. Rowena’s energy washes over her. Her steadfast resolve is something that Billie has always admired. Rowena has been knocked down many times and she has never failed to get back up again. It’s so very human of her and something that comforts Billie in this moment, when everything around her is changing. Rowena’s energy flows through her, an energy that knows how to meet adversity and bend but not break. Billie remembers when she comforted Rowena with words when she was a witch. Words were the only thing her human brain would have understood. Now Rowena is able to soothe her with a cosmic exchange of energies a human would never understand.

They stand there together while the reshaping of the world goes on around them, for a single moment and for many moments and for every moment that ever existed and ever will exist. They stand there while time stretches on and wraps around them and skips ahead and reverses and repeats, swirling frantically around this one moment held still by Rowena’s powers.

“It’s the end of the world as we know it,” Rowena gives Billie a sly smile. “And how are we feeling?”

“I feel fine,” Billie’s mouth twitches but she doesn’t allow herself to smile at Rowena’s joke.

“Will we still have that song in this brand new world order?” Rowena asks.

“In some iteration or another,” Billie says.

“I suppose I’ve been idle long enough,” Rowena sighs, letting her hand fall and stepping away. “Time to dive back into the chaos, then?"

“Well, it wouldn't be much of a universe without either of us," Billie says.

Rowena gives her a small, satisfied smile.

Billie dematerializes first, her consciousness moving away from the frozen moment she shared with Rowena and out towards the magnificent chaos of a whole universe being reorientated. Rowena soon follows, chasing after her into a swirling mass of primordial atoms that were to become and have become and are the brand new universe.

There was a river the road was following, clean and clear and a very pretty spectral blue that made the nothing in his stomach want to rear up and choke him when he looked over at it. And there was a field of growing golden wheat on the other side when he glanced somewhere other than at his own hands and feet. Then he looked up to the line of mountains and realized he wasn't so very far away from what he knew. The Command Center of the Zordon of Eltar stood illusioned against non-Rangers, but Jason could see it. So he kept walking.

The photos of the team splayed out here and there on walls of the Command Center, stuck up with little sticky globs or stickers in fun little shapes made Jason sick and sad and filled with a noise in his ears that he couldn't seem to wash out no matter how long he spent inside the training area punching through false enemies in the pocket dimension. He kept remaking the world he'd left behind to ignore the envy he felt for the world he stood on that how worked out so much better for itself. Tommy Oliver of the here had proven himself loyal, brave, and true; protective and considerate towards the team that had given him another chance. Lord Drakkon had run away and killed and destroyed any chance he had at retrieving his former humanity by doing his damnedest to forget what "Tommy" had ever thought he was going to be. Punching through the thirtieth fake sentry made of hard light and quietly humming energy, fist shattering the glass of the helmet in a way he would not think to recall (his own face shield had not hurt as much as he thought it would, but the scars across his face still reminded him of failure), Jason sighed heavily and loped back out of the pocket dimension and into the quiet of the lightly air controlled hallways. Kimberly had told him that there were cupcakes in the fridge, and despite how it always hurt him to eat real food, he thought he'd imbibe.

It's my cringe hyperfixation and I get to be hyperindulgent about it 😤

I never actually want them to remake the show 'cause I don't trust them to capture the magic of what hit my brain and stayed there for 20+ years, BUT.

I just watched a ✨YouTube video✨

It's from a channel I just found called CJ the X, and the video was about Stranger Things. More importantly, while watching it, I was like, "If they ever redo this show or make some sort of modern AU of it or something, this is their new roadmap for Angus. I will not watch it unless Angus looks and acts like this. I am in love."

Anyway - I LOVE this. Somehow I linked it back to that random post I made about Rohan digging holes if Angus ever went away for some reason, and now I'm picturing a Modern AU with Angus going off to one university and Rohan going off to a completely different one, and the two finally reuniting over a break where Angus comes to visit and Rohan's so excited and all of Rohan's friends are like "who's this guy you never shut up about" and Rohan being like "he's great 😍 he's my best friend 😍 you're gonna love him 😍" and they finally all meet Angus and he's this. And there's Rohan immediately being like "😍 i told you he was great 😍"

Tons of energy, tons of expression, tons of performance, tons of animation, tons of thoughts - just a lot in the best way.

I'm not saying it's an accurate translation of his existing character. But it's definitely the best translation and the only possible translation that I would find interesting enough to warrant remaking the show in any capacity.

I also think it's more tied to one of my earlier head canons for him: him being a bard (very DnD-style, where he can learn magic eventually but he's surrounded by a whole bunch of non-bards who can't inherently help him tap into that). I don't think this lines up with the Fey!Angus concept too well, but yes, Bard!Angus fits this perfectly.

What's great is that I still see him stealing shit, but being a lot more creative in his excuses for how it totally wasn't stealing, does anyone 'own' anything anyway. Like - I don't want him to get out of getting locked in prison every five minutes, but I'd love to have him buy himself a lot of time just to completely fail to come up with a good reason why he shouldn't be arrested or fail to actually reach whatever escape door he'd be trying to inch towards. That's sort of what we're missing in the show: more scenes of Angus completely whiffing the getaway that wasn't just because he couldn't outrun them. He's not a runner - he can run, but he complains about it constantly. Quit pinning everything on whether he can do enough cardio. >:(

Also it was a great video outright, so I loved it for that, but also-also, I am now on the lookout for the perfect embodiment of modern versions for the other four. 🥰

I'm gonna go binge this channel now. There was a lot of good stuff on it. 🥳

ETA: oh my God, the thought of this version of Angus interacting with any version of Cathbad...! 😭 Right now, Angus goes into Cathbad's chamber and fiddles with everything in there. That's actually the safer approach, because if anything goes wrong... well, it's liked getting stabbed at a hospital: you're already where you're supposed to be in that situation. This version? He'd 100% steal ingredients and run away with them to try it somewhere else. That thing where Midar pretends to be Angus and walks in shrunk? That'd be like a daily thing for him.

Technically, doing it this way, I could see Angus ending up self-teaching himself how to make some basic potions. If a remake changed how Rohan's apprenticeship worked, this could be like Angus actively volunteering to do Rohan's homework for him - making the potions after Rohan brings him the ingredients in jail, or Angus mixing something up and getting Rohan to show it to Cathbad so Cathbad "doesn't know" it wasn't actually Rohan who made it (he would still know 😝).

It kinda brings me back to that episode where Garrett's introduced, when Cathbad sends Angus off to collect some herbs. I truly love the thought of Cathbad knowing Angus is the one doing all the powder- and potion-related chores, while Rohan does the more practical stuff and helps test the magic, like by fighting a summoned skeleton or something.

I'm still gonna think about this. :3 I don't want a remake, but I am intrigued by trying to pitch one to myself.

July 1 - A New Fictional Appears

Admittedly shorter than I'd have liked. My usual warnings apply; if I can get 300 words out per prompt, it's a win. = = = = =

Fictionals are a purely human invention.

They don't exist on other planets or realities, or even in other non-human based Races. For some, it's a matter of having books instead of, say, several epic oral traditions, or drinking from shared seas of knowledge, or reading stories that have been painstakingly carved onto giant crystal monuments.

In enduring societies like the Fae Legions where everyone who's anyone has lived for at least a couple centuries, books really aren't necessary. Additionally, it's somewhat of a challenge for creatures of pure whimsy to buckle down and write for more than a few pages, let alone possess the fortitude needed to simply absorb something as outwardly mundane and comforting as a book.

For most beings on this plane of existence, the truism 'knowledge is power' has a certain weight to it. However, for Fictionals (as a wise man once inferred) Knowledge equals Power, Power can be translated into Energy, which when properly captured and defined can indeed be distilled into Matter that has emotional weight, a far more vital force when coupled with the Quintessence of several thousand people believing.

Ask anyone who's been in love; humans have survived on less.

While it's possible to call up phantasms out of stories written on stone or drunk from the sea, the summoned creatures are simply that--they fade according to the Natural Laws that govern Magic. One sunrise or one sunset, one noon or one midnight, and the threshold laws all apply, given the terms of the spell employed.

Humans and Books clearly contain a more intense energy that defies these restrictions.

Prospero super-charged the ley lines in order to remake the world according to his grand vision. When Shakespeare's possession ended, all that Power and Energy had to go somewhere.

Season 2, Episode 10--And the Final Curtain

Jenkins has been feeling uneasy for a couple of days. The Library is murmuring, there's no other word for it, there's Power crackling under the earth ever since he and the younger Librarians returned Shakespeare to 1611 and said goodbye to Flynn and Eve. Even in the multi-dimensional origami of Library-space, odd waves of energy push and pull at him, an invisible rip tide that's upsetting his center of balance. He hasn't felt this perturbed since discovering Morgan le Fay was behind that Chicagoland science fair.

But there is always work to be done. He takes a deep breath and steadies himself. They will muddle on as best they can, prepare for the final battle (and how he's going to break that bit of news to the three of them, he has no idea). Duty above all else. He must solider on. The prophesy is clear at any rate, the ultimate battle will be soon, and it's best to have at least a rudimentary plan for egress or rescue. Thus, he starts working on the little portable summoning circle on his laboratory table. Perhaps if it was reinforced with copper wiring…?

He catches something out of the corner of his eye, a soft blue light that shines briefly over by the drawer that contains the selkie skins.

"Oh, this isn't right," a masculine voice mumbles from the floor.

Jenkins looks up from his work, focuses on the man, and frowns. "Excuse me," he states a little too flatly for it to be a question. "...and you are…?"

The man winces as he gets up and stands, aided by a dynamic, high-collared red cloak that flutters nervously and wipes a bit of dirt from the man's face. The stranger bats the cloth away and fixes the Caretaker with a piercing stare. "Where am I?"

Jenkins gives a small, resigned hum before answering. Either this intruder looks remarkably like Benedict Cumberbatch dressed up as some sort of wizard, or this is another case for the Librarians.

Cassandra's mouth is hanging open at what Jake sincerely believes is an unwarranted angle. "You…you…you're…"

"He's not," Jenkins interrupts, "from our existence. Dr. Strange is recently arrived from…"

"Apparently, Mr. Jones' comic book," finishes the Fictional.

Ezekiel grins.

"Wow," states Jake flatly, wishing his girlfriend wouldn't be quite so…enchanted?

Our next profile for Writers in Horror Recognition Month is Joe Augustyn

Joe Augustyn is an American screenwriter, film producer, and author.

Following graduation from AFI he worked as an associate of Steve Golin and Joni Sighvatsson, who later went on to found Propaganda Films. After producing two features he retired from producing to focus exclusively on screenwriting, completing assignments for such companies as Tristar, Propaganda and countless indie producers. Augustyn's first feature, Night of the Demons, based on his original screenplay Halloween Party, was remade in 2008 by 7 Arts Productions, starring Shannon Elizabeth and Edward Furlong. Augustyn was not involved creatively in the remake and has pointed that out in interviews.

His second feature film as writer-producer was Night Angel. Based on Augustyn's original spec screenplay titled Lilith, it was the first feature film based on the ancient legend of the arch-succubus Lilith. With his health compromised by the stress of this production, Augustyn subsequently retired from producing to focus on writing.

His next produced screenplay was Night of the Demons 2 based on a story co-written with playwright James Penzi.

In 2001 Augustyn returned to Philadelphia to care for his elderly parents and after completing a few screenplay writing assignments and specs he began writing novels and short stories.

Augustyn's first novel The Nine Lives of Felicia Miller was published by Wildcat Press in 2012.

Besides writing fiction, Augustyn is an advocate for serious paranormal research, believing that scientific investigation into the metaphysical will reap benefits for humanity by confirming a spiritual aspect to the universe which in turn will foster greater respect among people and nations. He holds a Vedic view of reality, which holds that spirit precedes corporality, in the same way that energy generates matter, as well as a quantum connection of everything that exists on a spiritual level.

In 2014 he published Dead Rain: A Tale of the Zombie Apocalypse and Ghostwriter: The Polaroid Ghost & Other True Tales of the Paranormal, a non-fiction book of personal paranormal experiences including eyewitness accounts of events that took place in "the Wright House" (so named after the spirit that allegedly identified itself by name, writing on Polaroid film in ectoplasmic scrawl.) Augustyn was present at a Halloween party at which several guests who brought their own Polaroid cameras snapped remarkable photos. The case has been featured on several TV and cable shows including Sightings, My Ghost Story, Unexplained Mysteries, and Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files. It has been investigated by parapsychologist Kerry Gaynor of UCLA and photo experts from Polaroid Corporation and Brooks Institute, all of whom were baffled. Investigators from Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files attempted to debunk the ghostly Polaroids using carefully controlled experiments but instead got inexplicable results. Combined with voice stress analysis of the occupants of the house that indicated they were telling the truth, they declared the case authentic. On several occasions visitors brought their own Polaroid cameras loaded with their own film and also got ghostly results.

Actor and paranormal enthusiast Dan Aykroyd contributed a glowing introduction to GHOSTWRITER, calling it "an essential volume for any serious seeker in the understanding of the paranormal."

Honda Tohru and the Strength of Nurturing

Spoilers for Fruits Basket

Back in the ‘00s, in their quest for more gender non-conforming, strong female characters, much of fandom pushed aside heroines who they deemed to be too “girly”. Female characters who put their energy into caring for others, rather than standing up and fighting, were dismissed as passive doormats who exist only for the male cast’s development. One such character was Tohru Honda, the heroine of the classic shoujo manga and anime Fruits Basket. The first part of the remake has made it abundantly clear that Tohru is plenty strong; however, since her strength comes in the form of traditionally feminine roles such as nurturing and protecting those dear to her, audiences tend to disregard her strength because of how these roles are devalued.

Fruits Baskets’ set up does resemble that of a typical reverse harem. Tohru Honda has been living alone in a tent after her mother dies, and finds she’s unwittingly been trespassing on the property of her classmate Yuki Sohma and his cousin. Rather than kicking her to the curb, the Sohmas invite her to live with them, offering her free room and board in exchange for her cooking and cleaning for them. Not long after moving in, she discovers that members of the Sohma family, including her new housemates, are cursed to turn into animals of the Chinese zodiac when embraced by members of other sexes. One by one, she meets and bonds with the mostly-male zodiac members.

The misreading of Tohru as a doormat comes from a combination of genre awareness and gendered expectations. The main characters of so-called “reverse harems”, in which a female protagonist is surrounded by handsome male suitors, tend to be passive and accept whatever abuse comes their way, while the male characters are more active and drive the storyline. Compared to the fantastical and allegorical circumstances of the Sohmas, Tohru’s own situation – recently orphaned and homeless because of her self-sacrificing nature – seems positively prosaic by comparison. The true nature of her strength only becomes clear after pulling back that top layer of expectations and actively engaging with the material.

I thought a lot about how I should set up this part of the series, if I should give a mythological background or not, and I came to the conclusion that no, I won't do that right now. I will talk about the Greek and the Norse Pantheons when I will be free from exams, but for now I will just give my personal experience with the Gods and how we've built our relationship during those years together.

My dieties: Hekate

She has been the first diety for me (I mean I had Loki around but hey I didn't know yet). As I said in the previous part, she's one of the guardians of our family, so she has been with me since I was born too.

When I first started getting into paganism, it was natural for me to call out for her, I didn't have any doubt that the Goddess I was seeking for was her, and she didn't disappoint me.

She has always been present since I started to notice her energy, whenever I needed or I was calling out for her, she was right by my side. We've been through the worst time of my life together and even if I wasn't able to have a dialogue with her, I was never alone. She uses to touch my head when she's there and this is what made me know at that time that she was here with me.

Considering her loving presence and how many problems I have with my mum, with time I started to consider her a motherly figure and now she's the only goddess I'm "working" with and the only one that I trust (I have serious problems with trusting women in general, it takes me a lot of time and effort).

I can describe her like the goth mum who likes to hype her son/daugher and wants them to be their truly self: fascinating, intriguing and dangerous. Her energy is dark, powerful, but also very calm and fascinating, like a particular perfume; I associate her with with a mixture of spices and other smells: vanilla, lavender, incense, cypress, sandalwood, nutmeg. Like all together, it's very particular. The Goth Mum does smell good.

My work with her

We don't actually work together but she isn't here without doing anything. Considering that she is a goddess related to the Underworld and, to make it short, basically the main goddess who were invoked for necromancy rites, she had been helping me a lot to get in touch with spirits and how to behave with them.

She's also a protector of the household, so even though I consider her my foster mum basically, she always wanted me to get back to my real mother: for a long time I didn't want to, until my therapist made me do that too and when things get harsh, she's always there to give me courage and love. Also, she's the one who keeps away the bad guys, both "friends" and strangers: she made me do a wooden guardian with this specific intent as an offering for her. Jerry is outside near her altar.

She's a goddess and she embodies a strong and independent woman, as a lot of other goddesses: she knows my struggles with my gender and how much Loki helped me with it, and even though she knows that I don't really need labels for who I am she wants me to get in touch with my woman-side. She doesn't want to make me become a woman: she loves what I am and she respects that, but at the same time she knows how important it is to get in touch with both our feminine and masculine sides (we all have these two polarities and we should normalize this topic). We are currently working on this together, how I perceive femininity on me and on the others as well as working on its archetypes. Just let me say this: it has been months since we started and I'm still genderfluid but hey, I've never felt more comfortable in my body and in my mind, I'm just feeling in harmony with what I really am and I'm so fricking exited to start to balance both polarities (i've always been more on the masculine side), I'm sure it will be AMAZING.

I also perceive her as the goddess of choices: she is associated with crossroads and this is a place in which you choose your path, both physically and spiritually. Everyone at a certain point has to make a choice: she's there watching over us. She will never tell you if you're making the right choice because she knows that this is up to your free will, but she will always be there, challenging you to take those steps alone. This is what she taught me: I never got at advice from her about my spiritual and life paths, because she wanted me to be able to get through decisions alone, but this doesn't mean that she wasn't actually ready to help me if I really needed. She is a diety who will make you cross your own boundaries, just like Loki, and she will bring you to the edges of your personal reality: you will start questioning everything and everyone, every choice you make, until you understand that this isn't the point. She isn't thinking when she is crossing the line between the material and the spiritual world: she is using her intuition and this ability comes mostly from experience. This doesn't mean that she won't teach you anything: she taught me a lot of things but she never said when I was wrong nor she got angry. She patiently waited until I realized and then we had a talk about it. That's also why I consider her a mother: she gives me the independence I deserve but she's never distant and she's always ready to intervene if I mess up too bad.

For example, one day I really wanted to try necromancy. I knew it was a bad idea but hey, I just can't think about anything else when I get hyper fixated. While Loki and Hades were so concerned because I wasn't obviously ready and were trying to change my mind, she came and said:"let her do what she wants. If she's not scared, why not? And anyways it's better since we are here now. My dear, come with me and tell me what you had in mind". My idea was obviously terrible, it was just trying to remake what Odysseus did, but I tried anyway. I still don't know if I messed up or if I got really scared and my body reacted in this way, but I had this sharp pain on my right shoulder in the middle of the ritual. I started to have migraine and feeling nauseous as well (this was probably my anxiety or the fricking pain but ok). Loki and Hades were here as well but she made them swear that they wouldn't get involved unless she asked for their help. She came near me, touched my shoulder, and turned her key in the air. I immediately felt better except for the shoulder, since that day it's hurting from time to time. She looked at me and said:"sweetheart, I suppose we both agree on not doing this again for a long time, right? " Nothing else. This is how she teaches me things.

She does help tho if I explicitly ask: in spells especially. I had to do this protection spell which was active, not passive: this means that instead of just giving protection, it would do something to the person crossing her boundaries. She gave me that spell and it was my first time doing that, so I asked for her help. The spell lasted three hours and her candle was basically non existent when we started: that little flame lasted until I sealed the spell, to let me know she heard my call.

She is also the one who taught me that witchcraft isn't always safe: with a lot of spells are going to change the reality around you, this is what you are doing them for. She didn't go easy with me: we were doing basic spells together, but soon enough I learned that they can have bad consequences on your life, and she didn't help me fixing anything because I had to learn how to do that by myself. Thanks to her my practice is completely gray: one day I can do a self-love spell or a protection sachet and the next day I can throw an hex on someone who really did bad to me (please don't be moralistic: it's bad and everything, but trust me when I say that they deserve every inch of that hex. They made me go through a lot with my parents when I didn't do anything and still my relationship with them isn't ok due to those guys, so yeah). But as I said, mostly there's a price to pay and I know I will deal with the consequences sooner or later, the solution is the balance between those two aspects of my craft: dark and light always go together, that's the biggest lesson she gave me.

So yeah, at the beginning of my path she was very present and rn she took over Loki a little because I really needed to work on my feminine polarity, but we're doing this every Sunday (she gives me homework for the rest of the week), for the rest of the time I can perceive her coming to say hi, but mostly she doesn't interact with me unless it's needed. She's always watching, but from distance, that's because I call her guardian.

How I honor her

During the day I wear a key that I consecrated to her using her candle, so she knows that I always think about her.

When I do my makeup or I express my femininity, I say a little prayer to her because I'm honouring our work together.

As I do for the other Gods, I give her offerings:

Herbal tea

Moon water

Normal water

White wine

Dried fruits

Some sweets (just when I don't have anything else, she doesn't really like them that much)

A lot of keys

Some collectible dog figurines

Some jewelry I don't use anymore

Amethyst

Rocks

Purple flowers

Dry leaves/flowers

Basically that's all about the material offerings. For the rest of the time, I keep in mind what she did for me so I try to behave like she taught me during this time.

I did some researches on the Beholders because of Lucien's eyes and I found out about the existence of the Beholder's god, an entity known as The Great Mother. Please click on Keep reading to lose your sleep as I did.

This is the personality of the Great Mother as described in the Forgotten Realms Wiki:

Those that studied the Great Mother typically concluded that she was completely insane, lacking in the ruthless logic possessed by mortal beholders. In truth, she was dangerously intelligent, the method behind her madness simply being beyond the ability of most beings to understand. Ironically, her mind wasn't even divided into two halves, like most beholders. Still, while not crazy or mindless, the Great Mother was a creature of utter chaos and capricious whimsy, acting primarily on instinct and impulse. Often times, the Great Mother philosophized to herself about the nature of chaos and evil and was rumored to be the greatest sage on the subjects. She was said to be omniscient and did possess exclusive hidden lore, but seemed to be so knowledgeable that she was incapable of sharing it with any but the most intelligent entities, much less inferior beings. Some scholars speculated that she was not unable to convey such knowledge, but simply wouldn't provide it to lower-lifeforms, and indeed the Great Mother was a jealous and egotistical intellectual that refused to acknowledge even the notion that she could be mistaken. Befitting the deity of eye tyrants, she was said to have her own strange standards for her creations and would destroy or devour any that she found displeasing.

The objectives of this entity and hers followers are described as such:

Aside from birthing more beholders, the Great Mother's only other activity was drifting enigmatically in solitude throughout reality, particularly in the darker planes. She inexorably cruised through space deep in thought, always incomprehensibly gibbering in an alien protolanguage while experiencing bizarre visions. The purpose of her aimless journey wasn't to gather knowledge or magical secrets since she believed that she already knew all that was worth knowing.

The Greyhawk Wiki gives this description of her dogma:

The Great Mother exists to remake the multiverse in its image by filling it with its spawn, replacing all forms of life with monsters that resemble the Mother itself. It does not bother to acquire knowledge, because it has always known all that it could ever need to know. However, it cannot or will not communicate this knowledge to lesser beings, including its own offspring. It neglects its children, not bothering with omens or portents. Sometimes it will allow beholders to be entirely wiped out on a given world, while other times it will become enraged when even a small beholder community is threatened.

1d4chan.org gives us this about the Great Mother not-beholder followers:

Ocular Adept is a prestige class for humanoid followers of the Great Mother. To become one, they first have to approach a Beholder and convince it not to eat or disintegrate them. After the hard part is over they enter into a surgical pact, where a Beholder-kin eyeball is implanted in their forehead. This provides them a link to the Great Mother's power and allows them to perform eyebeam attacks similar to true Beholders. [...] Ocular Adepts have a separate divine spellcasting progression up to level 5 spells, which is in line with that of a Cleric. However, the Great Mother grants more low-level spells than a Cleric and only a few high-level ones. This is because while the Great Mother is "happy" enough to accept followers from non-Beholder races, she prefers to reserve high level spell power for those who really deserve it.

I know the Somnovem is a hive-mind created by nine ancient wizards, but beside that, the similarities between what it is implied being their purpose, how they act and how they give powers to the mortals are too many to be ignored. After all, if Lucien's abilities are really inspired by Beholders, why can't the Somnovem being inspired by the very being behind the creation of the Beholders in the official D&D lore? Which is not a group of deranged philosophers, but an actual god? If that's the case, it means that Lucien is not as unique as he believes, and the Somnovem actually wants to create more beings like him, just like the Great Mother wants to create more Beholders to shape her ideal vision of reality.

This is my theory: the Somnovem is a hive-mind, and they give eyes to the people who read into their scripts or got touched by their stream of consciousness. But some people are strong enough to retain an autonomy and freely use the powers of the hive, and they have the potential to become a Nonagon, a sort of Avatar of the Somnovem. Strong of will or powerful enough to retain their full autonomy is hard to tell for now. Those who can't retain the autonomy become part of the mind-hive, sleeping agents for the Nonagon and the Somnovem to be used as they please. They retain autonomy most of the time, but they are mentally conditioned to execute the will of the Nonagon in case they need their help. But if a person strong enough to resist, they can decide to try and murder another Nonagon to have that power for themselves, like Vess DeRogna did. If this is the case, when a Nonagon dies the Somnovem doesn't even care: the previous Nonagon comes back to be part of the City, and the new, more powerful one executes their will just like the previous one did. But when Lucien died it was different: Lucien was willing to spread their knowledge and add more minds to their hive, but Vess DeRogna wasn't. She just wanted to reach them into the Astral Sea and that was it. So they decided to guide Cree and bring Lucien back to life once that Mollymauk Tealeaf died. They gave him the chance to get his revenge and complete his mission.

Vess DeRogna killing Lucien might be circumstantial, but it might as well be a side effect of the wish of the Nonagon to join the perfect mind of the Somnovem: a person able to retain autonomy might corrupt the Somnovem with their imperfect human mind who was graced by a power they can't comprehend, and therefore they need to be destroyed. This would be just like when two Beholders meet each other: they see themselves as perfect beings and the other as a loathsome impostor who needs to be eliminated. This only if they retain autonomy: if they are a part of the hive-mind they are nothing more than an extension of themselves, therefore there is no danger into letting them live.

What does that mean for Beau and Caleb? That they might be the Somnovem's plan B in case Lucien fails. One of them might be forced to become the new Nonagon unless the Mighty Nein don't stop the process in time (and Artagan confirmed that there is a way to invert the process, but they were not able to access it at Level 13). And they will have to do it: have you read the part above about the Ocular Adepts? What 1d4chan doesn't say is that the Great Mother can Disintegrate an Ocular Adept at any moment through their third eye if they displease her. But the Somnovem and the Nonagon seem to prefer blasting the brain with psychic energy, so probably if they have a way to kill someone from a long distance it might not be a potential permadeath. And it might not be activated until all the nine eyes will be implanted, which is unlikely to happen before the battle with Lucien in Aeor.

(If this fail-safe exists, why did the Somnovem let Vess DeRogna live if she was unworthy? Because if she died at the wrong time the book would have been lost, and there were no other Nonagons in charge because the Somnovem cult is so little known. They needed Lucien to be alive again to retrieve it and go in with their plan. And suddenly her dying from a single attack makes sense: that neck-lift blast is not powerful enough to kill a person unless something already weakened them before. It was Lucien and the Somnovem who killed her.)
