February 14th, 2024 Update!
Hey all, I'm gonna be trying to do this weekly now. So, quick update on things, first and foremost the book as that's what most of you come here for! I am 11k words in and about a little halfway done with the path that lets you participate in the next part with Lance and Alvarez. There is going to be quite a bit of variation in how a PC can choose to approach this scene; those Combat Stats exist for a reason!
As for things going on with Patreon, I have decided on a schedule!
Patreon content will release on Tuesdays and Thursdays!
I am going to attempt to stick to that schedule as consistently as possible, and I'm off to a good start on that! Part 1 of The Bureau Audiobook went up today and part 2 is going up on Thursday. Not to mention the small short story introducing the character Buck Marcellis went up last Thursday! The story is around 2.5k words long, if I remember correctly. An extra little thing going up today as well is the Poll to see what Interactive Fiction I will be reading as an audiobook next. That's right:
You will get to pick the next audiobook reading!
I've gotten a bunch of different author's consent to make audiobooks of their work, so anyone who is a subscriber to the Patreon, you will have a direct say in what Audiobook goes up alongside the one for The Bureau! Options include things like:
Kingdoms and Empires
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - An affair of the heart
When Life Gives You Lemons
Honor Amongst Thieves
The Operative: Fires of Revolution
Defiled Hearts: The Barbarian
Along with a couple of others that are on the list for possibilities!
Over the next few months, I will be more active for sure, and you can expect the update for The Bureau to come out before the end of March (I hope). Thank you all so much for sticking with me, and I hope to see you over on the Patreon, which, thanks to hyperlinks, you can conveniently find
RIGHT HERE! <-
The Forum Page for "The Bureau"
The demo for the game itself!
Thank you all so much for reading this update and for sticking with me and continuing to do so for the future! You are all awesome! Also big shoutouts to @when-life-gives-you-lemonssss, @kingdoms-and-empires, @theoperativeif, @leoneliterary, @doriana-gray-games, @defiledheartsblog for giving me permission to read their work on my silly little attempt at Patreon content; you guys are awesome!
Stay Brilliant,
-Vi

Whenever Nancy and Robin take long trips together, Nancy will do most of the driving while Robin functions as her personal audio book from the passenger seat. She can read to Nancy for hours on end without ever getting tired of it, and Nancy loves nothing more than listening to Robin's husky voice completely immersing them in the story. She always lets Robin pick the books, is okay with whatever story it is as long as Robin is the one reading it to her. Sometimes she'll interrupt Robin to point out a particularly beautiful view or some landmark worth looking at, and every now and then Robin will interrupt herself to share some of her randomly straying thoughts with Nancy. But the hours driving always fly by, a book in Robin's right hand while her left is resting on Nancy's thigh, and neither of them think they'll ever get tired of trips like that.

aghhh i’ve been thinking about the httyd books again and how Absolutely Insane they are…. i ADORE watching people react to them because there’s this one point in the series where everything just feels different. and they don’t give you time to process what on earth happened before launching you head first full speed into one of the best pieces of literature i think i’ve ever read

Been digging deeper into whatever Shirley Jackson stories I can find online. It's amazing the way Jackson can pull the dust-cloth off of the routine and the banal to reveal the sinister and disturbing.
I had to listen to this particular story a few times before fully understanding the implications of the subtext. So, if you do listen, listen closely.
Also, this is a wonderful reading by acclaimed actress Maureen Stapleton.

Interesting thing about Lincoln.
As a person and a politician, he was defined by his way with words. He was a lawyer, which involves speaking in courtrooms and appealing to audiences. He rose to national prominence because of how well he did in a series of public debates. He wrote speeches that have lasted through the ages because of their concise yet vivid phrasing.
He understood the world through the lens of storytelling. He had anecdotes for every situation, and constantly used them to provide metaphors explaining his stances or his strategy or his view of an issue.
As president during a Civil War, a huge part of his job was crafting the narrative explaining what they were fighting for. The Gettysburg Address reframed the national narrative so the founding moment of the country wasn't the ratification of the Constitution--as the South claimed--but the Declaration of Independence that listed the ideals that all the states should be held to. Of course, the South was doing the same thing, so that the conflict was not only a battle of muskets and cannons--it was a war of stories.
And he was killed by an actor.
In a theater.
He was struck down by an opposing storyteller in a palace of artifice. An actress made a point of cradling his dying head in her lap so she could have a part in the drama. He lived by stories and died as the center of one, in a place made for telling such stories.
It's poetic and tragic and so shockingly fitting that the war of stories claimed him as its central victim.

Books of 2024: THE KAIJU PRESERVATION SOCIETY by John Scalzi.
I picked this up when he and Martha Wells were talking about WITCH KING at one of my local bookstores last summer partially because I felt bad shoving a stack of things for her to sign at her with nothing for him, sitting right next to her, after he'd been so delightful to listen to too, but! It is finally time! I need something funny and ridiculous and light, and I have it on good authority that this'll work.

different question but how do you read so much 😭 does it come easily to you? I’m so envious but I honestly can’t focus for that long even though I aspire to read a lot more than I do
i don't really have a good answer for you, i'm afraid - i'm a speed-reader, so i naturally just... finish books a lot faster than most people. it helps that i have a pretty long commute to work, so i often tear through half a book on the way there and half on the way back. but i do get it; it's frustrating when you really want to do something and your brain just won't let you focus on it. i know for some people with short attention spans audiobooks are the way forward, or ebooks, or reading a few pages every night before bed. you could also join a reading group, which is a nice way to meet people, and gives you an incentive to finish the book instead of giving up three pages in.
but the main thing to remember (i know it sounds cliché, i'm sorry) is that reading should be fun, not a source of shame. i've seen people trying to meet their "100 books a year" reading challenge by just picking books that are short and easy so they can cram in as many as possible. which is daft, because it doesn't matter if you read a hundred books in a year, or ten, or one. or none! it's not a contest, you know? so long as you're enjoying yourself it's all gravy, baby

Update March 5th, 2024 - A Small Snippet + Next Week on Patreon!
Hey everyone, sorry I didn't do this last week! It was a bit of a rough week for me, and to be honest, I was focusing on just having enough energy to get up and focus on the story and on the stuff for Patreon. Speaking of those two things, let's go over some stuff!
First off, the story! The first half of the next chapter for The Bureau is ALMOST DONE! That's super exciting because I know how different these paths can be, and how much variation they have, and will have, on the extra scenes that come after them. I'm so excited, in fact, that I decided to share a snippet of one of the extra scenes with you this time over on Patreon! Aside from that, I also added on more extra scene to work on for Chapter 4.5 as well.
I'm at the point where I'm not going to add anymore unless I view them as super important to the feel and story of the game, because 13 extra scenes is more than enough in my opinion. That being said, I'm not going to worry about getting every single one of those done before releasing the update, because I hate the idea of keeping people waiting. Besides, having extra scenes to unlock in the full game that weren't in the beta will be part of the fun I think!
Now, as for the Patreon, this week we have Parts 4 and 5 of The Bureau Audiobook for you guys. Next week, however, will be the first part of a three or four part short story series about an original character, Guinevere Heartstead! It will obviously be taking place in a more fantasy based setting and there are a bunch of characters and moments I'd love to hear your opinions on. I love writing this stuff for you guys, so please be sure to check it out. It's going to be 3.5k words of brand new content you won't be getting anywhere else! As for the other day next week, I'm undecided at the moment! It's either going to be Part 2 of the short story, or possibly an extra part of The Bureau Audiobook. Either way, you guys will be getting the regular scheduled content.
With all that being said, thank you to new and old patrons that have started/continue to support me, it really means a lot!

For practice while tweaking my setup, I did a rendition of @wingedcat13's Call Me Menace
I highly recommend this series; the characters just have such natural voices and are a delight from start to finish.
If you'd like to support my work, commission your own recordings, or demand more recordings from this series, you can find my ko-fi here.
